Abstract:Single and multilayer of Al2O3 and TiO2 were fabricated on anodized aluminum by atomic layer deposition. The effect of processing parameters on pore sealing and anti-corrosion property was studied. It is concluded that the micropores on anodized aluminum could be sealed by atomic layer deposition oxide films through SEM and staining experiments. The anti-corrosive property is affected mainly by the film thickness and process temperature. The acidic drip and salt spray test shows that the anti-corrosion property is enhanced as the film thickness increase. With the similar thickness, Al2O3/TiO2 multilayer film has the best anti-corrosion property, while the single Al2O3 layer appears the poorest. The complementary roles between two basic materials result in the enhanced application property.
Waterborne superhydrophobic coating with abrasion and corrosion resistant capabilities

Abstract:Superhydrophobic materials have been extensively exploited for corrosion protection because of their unique non-wetting properties, but restricted by the complicated fabrication process, fluorinated chemicals usage, weak interfacial binding force, low hardness, and poor abrasion/scratch resistance. In this paper, we designed a waterborne superhydrophobic coating based on modified Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles (M-Al 2 O 3 ) and waterborne epoxy resin through a versatile spray-coating approach. When the mass ratio of epoxy/M-Al 2 O 3 was 1.5, the coating features both superhydrophobic properties (water contact angle ∼ 150.8 ± 0.6° and sliding angle ∼ 4.9 ± 0.2°) and optimal abrasion-resistant stability. The coating can maintain its water-repellent superhydrophobicity after 90 abrasion cycles and 120 tape-peeling cycles, indicating reinforced interfacial robustness. Moreover, the coating exhibits excellent self-cleaning, anti-fouling, and corrosion-resistant behaviors with greatly enhanced charge transfer resistance (R ct ) and lowest frequency impedance values (|Z| 0.01Hz ). The corrosion inhibition efficiency of the original coating, coating after 90 abrasion cycles and coating after 120 tape-peeling cycles were 99.99 %, 97.54 %, and 97.52 % respectively, confirming a durable anti-corrosion stability. In addition, the coating retains its superhydrophobic properties after a 6 H pencil hardness test and knife scratch test, which demonstrates its robustness and stability against mechanical damage.

Abstract:The current research focus is to design a robust micro/nano-structured superhydrophobic epoxy coating to improve the wetting and anti-corrosion behavior of Q355 mild steel in harsh environment and obtain desired properties of self-healing and self-cleaning. Modified attapulgite (APT) and cerium nitrate based high-performance corrosion inhibitor ODA/PDA/APT-Ce 3+ (OPACe 3+ ) coatings were synthesized by the addition of dopamine (DA) and octadecylamine (ODA) which resulted in excellent corrosion inhibition by enhancing the corrosion protection performance of metal alloy and improving the water contact angle of the synthesized epoxy based OPACe 3+ coating to more than 160°. While wettability and corrosion protection were strongly associated with cerium nitrate and DA content, the surface microstructure of coated steel samples were closely associated with attapulgite quantity. Moreover, the OPACe 3+ surface coating demonstrated good self-healing properties to counter chemical deterioration in harsh environment after being exposed for several hours to 3.5 wt% sodium chloride, acidic and alkaline solution. It was able to regain its superhydrophobic properties following hot air flow over the coating surface. The OPACe 3+ epoxy coatings displayed long-lasting and outstanding self-healing performance in terms of its wettability and electrochemical stability.

A high corrosion-resistant waterborne epoxy resin coating improved by addition of multi-interface structured zinc phosphate particles

Abstract:In the present study, a three-dimensional multi-interface structured zinc phosphate particle with large specific surface area was prepared by regulating the zinc phosphate crystal growth process, which was applied to develop a waterborne epoxy resin coating with better corrosion resistance. The results reveal that the multi-interface structured zinc phosphate particles could well coalesce with epoxy resin. Compared with the waterborne coating doped with and without two-dimensional zinc phosphate sheets, the multi-interface structured zinc phosphate particles doped waterborne epoxy resin coating has highest corrosion potential, lowest corrosion current density and the highest low-frequency impedance, which indicates the obvious benefits of multi-interface structured zinc phosphate particles on corrosion resistance. Moreover, the electrochemical properties tests on the waterborne epoxy resin coatings immersed in salt solution for 3000 h demonstrate that the multi-interface structured zinc phosphate particles doped waterborne epoxy resin coating almost has no changes but the other waterborne epoxy resin coatings decrease obviously. The surface characterization on the corroded waterborne epoxy resin coatings reveal that the multi-interface structured zinc phosphate particles doped waterborne epoxy resin coating possesses the relative integrated surface, while the inner corrosion has occurred in other coatings. The waterborne epoxy resin coatings with different additives sprayed on Al alloy surface could obtain the adhesion strength between 6.21 and 6.81 MPa, and the multi-interface structured zinc phosphate particles doped waterborne epoxy resin coating possesses the maximum value. Even after the salt solution immersion for 3000 hours, the multi-interface structured zinc phosphate particles doped waterborne epoxy resin coating still remains the adhesion strength above 6.21 MPa. Such excellent corrosion resistance should be ascribed to the cooperation of strengthened physical inhibition effect, decreased polar channel and complexation reaction by multi-interface structured zinc phosphate particles.

Abstract:The exceptional corrosion resistance and combined physical and chemical self-cleaning capabilities of superhydrophobic photocatalytic coatings have sparked significant interest among researchers. In this paper, we propose an economical and eco-friendly superhydrophobic epoxy resin coating that incorporates SiO2@CuO/HDTMS nanoparticles modified with Hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS). The application of superhydrophobic coatings effectively reduces the contact area between the metal surface and corrosive media, leading to a decreased corrosion rate. Additionally, the incorporation of nanomaterials, exemplified by SiO2@CuO core–shell nanoparticles, improves the adhesion and durability of the coatings on aluminum alloy substrates. Experimental data from Tafel curve analysis and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) confirm the superior corrosion resistance of the superhydrophobic modified aluminum alloy surface compared to untreated surfaces. Estimations indicate a significant reduction in corrosion rate after superhydrophobic treatment. Furthermore, an optical absorption spectra analysis of the core–shell nanoparticles demonstrates their suitability for photocatalytic applications, showcasing their potential contribution to enhancing the overall performance of the coated surfaces. This research underscores the promising approach of combining superhydrophobic properties with photocatalytic capabilities to develop advanced surface modification techniques for enhanced corrosion resistance and functional properties in diverse industrial settings.

Abstract:Zirconia-modified epoxy acrylate emulsion was synthesized via soap-free emulsion polymerization by adding different amounts of modified ZrO2 nanoparticles. The modified ZrO2 nanoparticles were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated that the addition of modified ZrO2 could improve the thermal stability of the films formed by the emulsions. Moreover, the electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) results showed that the film former of zirconia-modified epoxy acrylate emulsion could effectively improve the corrosion resistance of the coatings. The results showed that the emulsion containing 1% modified ZrO2 had the best thermal stability and the corresponding coating had the best corrosion resistance.

Abstract:In the fields of engineering and materials science, enhancing the corrosion resistance of engineered metal materials is extremely important. Most common anti-corrosion coatings often lack the capacity to resist external damages, which can lead to a failure in the coating's physical shielding effect. In this study, we have developed an all-water-based, simple one-step spray method for preparing a modified phosphate-based organic-inorganic composite coating, designated as AP-S30@Al 2 O 3 @PTFE. The nanofillers of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) were dispersed into inorganic binder aluminum phosphate (AP) modified by silica sol (S30). The effects of the incorporation of S30 and Al 2 O 3 as the second hard phase on their wettability, mechanical properties, microscopic morphology, abrasion resistance, and corrosion resistance of the composite coatings were investigated. The results showed that the AP-S30@Al 2 O 3 @PTFE coating significantly improved the corrosion resistance of the metal, with the open current density decreasing from 2.285×10 -5 to 1.653×10 -7 mA·cm -2 , and the open potential decreasing from -0.7533 to -0.2577 V. In addition, the composite coating provides a significant improvement in wear resistance. Thus, this cost-effective and eco-friendly method may offer significant contributions to the design and fabrication of strategic composite coatings, advancing their practical deployment in the protection of metal surfaces.

Abstract:Here, a fluorine-free robust superhydrophobic coating was fabricated on the Al alloy substrate by a simple and low-cost approach. Embed modified TiO2 nanoparticles onto semi-cured epoxy resin adhesive layer prominently reduces the content of low-energy materials (stearic acid) on the superhydrophobic coating. This prepared coating with hierarchical structures, re-entrant structures and low surface energy shows superhydrophobic. The superhydrophobic coating shows excellent high impalement pressure even water droplets with the velocity of 3.43 m/s. This coating also exhibits stability after different tests and noticeable enhancement of adhesive strength compared with the coating without the epoxy resin. Moreover, this coating presents enhanced durability verified by a sandpaper abrasion and decreased friction coefficient by a wear test. It moreover enabled noticeable self-cleaning property. This superhydrophobic coating also shows promising anti-corrosion property in both the corrosion solution and the salt spray compared with the Al alloy substrate. Notably, the superhydrophobic property combined with photocatalytic function prominently improves the anti-biofouling property of the Al alloy substrate due to the superhydrophobicity reducing organic and bacterial adhesion and the photocatalysis providing organic degradation and preventing bacterial adhesion. The fluorine-free robust multifunctional coating with superhydrophobic and photocatalytic properties can be applied to functionalize various solid surfaces.

Abstract:Thin films of organosilanes have been successfully used as the alternative to toxic chromate coatings for surface pretreatment of metals and alloys. To further improve their corrosion performance, in the present work nano-scaled TiO2 particles were added to the dodecyltrimethoxysilane (DTMS) films coated onto AA2024-T3 substrates, by using either the dip-coating or the cathodically electro-assisted deposition process. The obtained composite films were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), water contact angle measurements, Fourier transform reflection-absorption IR (FTRA-IR) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results show that these two techniques (nanoparticles incorporation and the electro-assisted deposition) both facilitate the deposition process of silane films, giving thicker deposit and higher coverage surface along with higher roughness and hydrophobicity, and thereby improve their corrosion resistance. Moreover, the corrosion performance of silane films is further improved by the combined use of nanoparticles modification and electro-assisted deposition.
Robust superhydrophobic film on aluminum alloy prepared with TiO 2 /SiO 2 -silane composite film for efficient self-cleaning, anti-corrosion and anti-icing

Abstract:The stable superhydrophobic coating is significant for prolonging service life, reducing maintaining cost and enhancing material performances. In this study, robust superhydrophobic film was fabricated on Al alloy through anodic anodization followed by chemical deposition and spin coating of TiO 2 /SiO 2 -silane composite film. This fabrication method is controllable, eco-friendly, available for large and irregular Al alloy with low equipment requirements. Uniquely, the as-prepared Al alloy showed uniform micro-nanoporous arrays and achieved excellent superhydrophobic performance, with static water contact angle of 165o and sliding angle of 2.92o. Moreover, the robust superhydrophobic film on Al alloy presented high adhesion strength, strong stability under ambient air, ultraviolet light irradiation and abrasion. Meanwhile, two orders of magnitude reduction in corrosion current density and anti-corrosion efficiency of 99.2% were realized. The superhydrophobic Al alloy surface further displayed superb non-sticking, water repellency, self-cleaning, and anti-icing performances, which can be applied at harsh conditions in aerospace and marine fields.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic surfaces with strong water repellency have been widely studied, but their practical applications are limited by the low stability and durability of the air film. In this work, a long-lasting anti-scaling and anti-corrosion superhydrophobic polyalpha-olefin (PAO)/polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF)/TiO 2 coating was fabricated by innovatively introducing PAO. The excellent scale and corrosion resistance of the superhydrophobic PAO/PVDF/TiO 2 coating originated from two barriers of the air layer and the PAO water repellent barrier layer on the coating surface, which can effectively prevent scaling and corrosive media from infiltration. After immersing in a supersaturated CaCO 3 solution for 360 h, the scale mass of the superhydrophobic PAO/PVDF/TiO 2 coating decreased by 22.0 % and 52.2 %, compared to the superhydrophobic PVDF/TiO 2 coating and the hydrophobic PVDF/TiO 2 coating respectively. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed the impedance of the superhydrophobic PAO/PVDF/TiO 2 coating remained at 10 10 Ω cm 2 after 150 days of immersion, which is nearly four orders-of-magnitude higher than that of the hydrophobic PVDF/TiO 2 coating. The synergistic effect between the air layer and the PAO water repellent barrier layer endows the superhydrophobic PAO/PVDF/TiO 2 coating with excellent comprehensive performance. This study helps establish a new method for designing anti-scaling and anti-corrosion dual-functional superhydrophobic coatings.

Abstract:The introduction of poly(tannic acid) (PTA) and cerium ion [Ce(III)] on the surface of α-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP) endowed the α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III)/waterborne epoxy composite coating with enhanced corrosion protection and wear resistance performances. The successful preparation of α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III) was confirmed through X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectra. PTA improved the compatibility between α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III) and the waterborne epoxy resin due to the presence of organic groups from tannic acid. The wear resistance test indicated that the incorporation of α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III) effectively reduced the coefficient of friction and the wear rate. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used to analyze the corrosion protection performance of unbroken coatings and the self-healing ability of scratched coatings. The incorporation of α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III) improved the protection performace distinctly. In addition, α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III) endowed the composite coating with dual corrosion inhibition effects, originating from the PTA film, to prevent the penetration of corrosive media and a dense film that came from the Ce(III) cation. The waterborne epoxy system with enhanced corrosion and wear resistance in this paper broadens the application of α-ZrP.
Preparation of Anticorrosive Epoxy Nanocomposite Coating Modified by Polyethyleneimine Nano-Alumina

Abstract:Aluminum alloys with low density and high specific strength have been widely used in marine engineering. Epoxy coatings, a simple and economical protection strategy, have been applied on alloy surfaces to prolong service life. However, a pure epoxy coating cannot provide long-term protection for metals in the marine environment. Hence, in this work, nano-alumina (nano-Al2O3) modified by polyethyleneimine (PEI) were added into epoxy coatings to enhance anticorrosion properties. Using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), we found that the molecular chain of PEI was successfully grafted on the surface of nano-Al2O3, and the cross profile of coatings indicated that the modified nano-Al2O3 uniformly dispersed in the epoxy coating. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results demonstrate that the coating resistance of the modified epoxy nanocomposite coating was 10 times higher than that of the pure epoxy coating after 3 days of immersion in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. Meanwhile, the surface morphologies and EDS-mapping of substrates after EIS testing show that the substrate coated with modified epoxy nanocomposite coating had the smallest amount of corrosion products. These results show that this modified epoxy nanocomposite coating has excellent anticorrosion performance.

Abstract:The phenomena of corrosion in metals have resulted in significant damage to the day-to-day lives of humans, the routine maintenance of engineering metal materials, and catastrophic corrosion damage has also triggered huge economic losses. Herein, we propose a double-layer PDVB/FSiO 2 -PDVB@PPy/EP sprayable coating with excellent robust superhydrophobicity and electroactive based on mass-producible polydivinylbenzene nanotubes (PDVB NTs) to apply in anti-corrosion of Q235 steel plate. On one hand, the electroactive base layer of PDVB@PPy/EP can constitute a physical barrier against corrosive media; On the other hand, cross-linked PDVB NTs containing FSiO 2 NPs (PDVB/FSiO 2 NTs) can form a superhydrophobic surface structure to avoid substrate corrosion from corrosive liquid. The water contact angle (WCA) of the composite coating is 163.9° and the sliding angle (SA) is 3.6°, indicating that the coating possesses excellent superhydrophobic properties. Remarkably, Cross-cut scratch, tape peel, and Taber abrasion tests confirm that the composite coating exhibits excellent robust performance. The pitting pit depth after 30 days of salt spray test is 4 μm, and following 60 days of immersion in a solution containing 3.5 wt% NaCl, the protection efficiency ( P.E. %) reaches 94.79 %. These results suggest that the double-layer electroactive superhydrophobic coating exhibits excellent corrosion resistance.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic materials have shown tremendous potential in various fields. However, the adhesion, wetting, and pinning of low-surface-tension liquids greatly limit their multifunctional applications. Therefore, the creation of superamphiphobic coatings that combine superhydrophobic and superoleophobic properties through a simple preparation strategy is desirable. In this study, we successfully developed an organic-inorganic hybrid superamphiphobic coating on Q235 carbon steel using aluminum oxide nanoparticles, organosilanes, and waterborne epoxy resin via a versatile spray-coating technique. The coating exhibited high contact angles (> 151°) and low sliding angles (< 7°) for water and oil liquids, demonstrating excellent superamphiphobic characteristics. Electrochemical tests demonstrated significant improvements in charge transfer resistance and low-frequency modulus for the superamphiphobic coating. The corrosion potential shifted positively by 590 mV, and the corrosion current density decreased by four orders of magnitude. Additionally, the coating endured 480 h of salt spray and 2400 h of outdoor atmospheric exposure, showcasing superior anti-corrosion capacity. Freezing tests of water droplets at –10°C and –15°C confirmed that the coating significantly prolonged the freezing time with reduced ice adhesion strength. We believe that the designed superamphiphobic coating with integrated functionalities of self-cleaning, anti-corrosion, anti-icing, and anti-liquid-adhesion can provide important solutions for extending the lifespan of materials in marine and industrial environments. Abstract:The coating was successfully prepared by layer‐by‐layer construction. The coating overcomes the defects of the water‐based coating and forms an effective barrier protection layer. Compared with the traditional water‐based anticorrosive coating, the coating has high hydrophobic performance and better anticorrosive performance. Water‐based anticorrosive coatings have poor water resistance, which easily lead to coating deterioration and metal corrosion. In order to improve the anticorrosion performance of waterborne coating, herein, the polytetrafluoroethylene/dimethyl siloxane/epoxy resin (PTFE/PDMS/EP) hydrophobic anticorrosive coating was prepared by layer‐by‐layer construction. The spatial structure and microscopic morphology of the hydrophobic coating were analyzed by XRD, FTIR, and SEM. The hydrophobicity and corrosion resistance of the composite coating were analyzed by hydrophobicity test, electrochemical polarization curve, hydrophobicity and corrosion resistance test of the mixed layer, Tafel polarization curves, and AC impedance spectrum. The results showed that the water contact angle of PTFE/PDMS/EP coating reached 141° and the protection efficiency of PTFE/PDMS/EP coating was 98.62%. After soaking for 7 days, the corrosion process still stays at the initial stage, which was mainly due to the good sealing and barrier properties and high anticorrosion efficiency of PTFE/PDMS/EP coating. The coating has high corrosion protection efficiency and long service life, which is of great significance to metal corrosion protection in harsh marine environments.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic surfaces with good water repellency have been widely studied, but their complex preparation process and poor durability limit their practical application. In this work, we proposed a simple and environmentally friendly method to prepare a robust superhydrophobic coating and explores its application in the field of corrosion prevention and scale inhibition. Environmentally friendly and low‐cost SiO2 nanoparticles modified by octadecyl trimethoxysilane (ODMS) were mixed with epoxy resin and sprayed onto the surface of metal substrates. The prepared ODMS‐SiO2/epoxy resin composite coating has a water contact angle (WCA) of 161.5°, exhibiting the excellent superhydrophobicity. In addition, the prepared coating remains the original microstructure and good superhydrophobicity (WCA is 155°) after 30 cycles of wear test under 200 g load, showing the excellent mechanical stability. The inherent superhydrophobic property also endows the coating with excellent corrosion and scale inhibition. The impedance of the composite coating was two orders of magnitude higher than that of the pure epoxy coating. The scaling amount of superhydrophobic composite coating in 24 h is 47% of that of epoxy resin coating. This work provides a new strategy for constructing multifunctional superhydrophobic coatings with excellent mechanical stability, corrosion resistance and scale inhibition. Abstract:This paper presents a ceramic based superhydrophobic coating fabricated on aluminum via plasma electrolytic oxidation and chemical vapor deposition methods. The morphology, chemical composition and wettability were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometer, and water contact angle (WCA). Water repellency, mechanical durability, anti-corrosion resistance and self-cleaning properties were investigated respectively. The results indicate that the prepared superhydrophobic coating featured net-like structured silica nanoparticles and concave pits with porous ceramic. Based on these characters, the prepared coating with a WCA of 160.5° exhibits excellent water repelling and self-cleaning properties. In addition, compared with bare aluminum, the corrosion current density of the prepared superhydrophobic coating is smaller by 3 orders of magnitude with a high inhibition efficiency of 99.76%. Furthermore, thanks to the ceramic based wear-resistant coating and protective micro-architectures, the prepared superhydrophobic coating demonstrates a superb mechanical durability. Therefore, the prepared superhydrophobic coating on aluminum is expected to offer potential opportunities for industrial applications in marine corrosive environments.

Abstract:In this work, a robust epoxy adhesive (EP) @ superhydrophobic SiO 2 (SH-SiO 2 )-based superhydrophobic coating was prepared on the aluminum substrate by a simple one-step spraying strategy. The prepared 2 coating exhibits hierarchical micro/nanostructures and is capable of maintaining a contact angle of more than 150° after 1000 cm of abrasion length and 80 tape-peeling repetitions. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and quantum mechanics calculations show that the improved mechanical resistance is attributed to the enhanced interfacial interaction between the 2 coating and the underlying substrate induced by the epoxy adhesive. Electrochemical measurements in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution show the corrosion inhibition efficiency of the EP @SH-SiO 2 coating reaches up to 99.99%, and even after 8 days of immersion, the low frequency impedance modulus of the EP @SH-SiO 2 sample is still ∼1 order of magnitude higher than that bare aluminum, demonstrating excellent long-term corrosion protection. The diffusion behavior of the corrosive medium in the iO 2 coating was revealed by MD simulation to support the experimental results. Additionally, the 2 coating exhibits good chemical stability and hydrophobic repair properties. This work will provide a new perspective for the preparation and study of robust superhydrophobic aluminum for corrosion protection properties.
