Abstract:Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is one of the most commonly used polyester plastics worldwide but is extremely difficult to be hydrolyzed in a natural environment. PET plastic is an inexpensive, lightweight, and durable material, which can readily be molded into an assortment of products that are used in a broad range of applications. Most PET is used for single-use packaging materials, such as disposable consumer items and packaging. Although PET plastics are a valuable resource in many aspects, the proliferation of plastic products in the last several decades have resulted in a negative environmental footprint. The long-term risk of released PET waste in the environment poses a serious threat to ecosystems, food safety, and even human health in modern society. Recycling is one of the most important actions currently available to reduce these impacts. Current clean-up strategies have attempted to alleviate the adverse impacts of PET pollution but are unable to compete with the increasing quantities of PET waste exposed to the environment. In this review paper, current PET recycling methods to improve life cycle and waste management are discussed, which can be further implemented to reduce plastics pollution and its impacts on health and environment. Compared with conventional mechanical and chemical recycling processes, the biotechnological recycling of PET involves enzymatic degradation of the waste PET and the followed bioconversion of degraded PET monomers into value-added chemicals. This approach creates a circular PET economy by recycling waste PET or upcycling it into more valuable products with minimal environmental footprint.

Abstract:Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is favored for its exceptional properties and widespread daily use. This review highlights recent advancements that enable the development of biological tools for PET decomposition, transforming PET into valuable platform chemicals and materials in upcycling processes. Enhancing PET hydrolases' catalytic activity and efficiency through protein engineering strategies is a priority, facilitating more effective PET waste management. Efforts to create novel PET hydrolases for large-scale PET depolymerization continue, but cost-effectiveness remains challenging. Hydrolyzed monomers must add additional value to make PET recycling economically attractive. Valorization of hydrolysis products through the upcycling process is expected to produce new compounds with different values and qualities from the initial polymer, making the decomposed monomers more appealing. Advances in synthetic biology and enzyme engineering hold promise for PET upcycling. While biological depolymerization offers environmental benefits, further research is needed to make PET upcycling sustainable and economically feasible.

Abstract:Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a plastic material commonly applied to beverage packaging used in everyday life. Owing to PET's versatility and ease of use, its consumption has continuously increased, resulting in considerable waste generation. Several physical and chemical recycling processes have been developed to address this problem. Recently, biological upcycling is being actively studied and has come to be regarded as a powerful technology for overcoming the economic issues associated with conventional recycling methods. For upcycling, PET should be degraded into small molecules, such as terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol, which are utilized as substrates for bioconversion, through various degradation processes, including gasification, pyrolysis, and chemical/biological depolymerization. Furthermore, biological upcycling methods have been applied to biosynthesize value-added chemicals, such as adipic acid, muconic acid, catechol, vanillin, and glycolic acid. In this review, we introduce and discuss various degradation methods that yield substrates for bioconversion and biological upcycling processes to produce value-added biochemicals. These technologies encourage a circular economy, which reduces the amount of waste released into the environment.

Abstract:The rapidly increasing production and widespread application of plastics have brought convenience to our lives, but they have consumed a huge amount of nonrenewable fossil energy, leading to additional CO2 emissions and generation of an enormous amount of plastic waste (also called white pollution). Chemical recycling and upcycling of waste plastic products (also called waste plastic refineries) into recycled monomers and/or valuable chemicals can decrease the dependence on fossil energy and/or reduce the emission of CO2, enabling the full utilization of carbon resources for the development of a circular economy. Polyesters, a vital class of plastics, are ideal feedstocks for chemical recycling due to the easily depolymerizable ester bonds compared to polyolefins. Among them, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is the most widely used product, making its chemical recycling to a circular carbon resource a hot topic with significant concerns. In this feature article, recent progress in depolymerization of waste polyesters (PET and/or PET-containing materials) and the subsequent upgrading of depolymerized monomers (or intermediates) to valuable chemicals was reviewed and prospected. Newly reported technologies, such as thermal catalysis, photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and biocatalysis, were discussed. The achievements, challenges, and potential of industrial applications of chemical recycling of polyesters were addressed.

Abstract:The substantial production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) products, coupled with high abandonment rates, results in significant environmental pollution and resource wastage. This has prompted global attention to the development of rational strategies for PET waste treatment. In the context of renewability and sustainability, catalytic chemical technology provides an effective means to recycle and upcycle PET waste into valuable resources. In this review, we initially provide an overview of strategies employed in the thermocatalytic process to recycle PET waste into valuable carbon materials, fuels and typical refined chemicals. The effect of catalysts on the quality and quantity of specific products is highlighted. Next, we introduce the development of renewable-energy-driven electrocatalytic and photocatalytic systems for sustainable PET waste upcycling, focusing on rational catalysts, innovative catalytic system design, and corresponding underlying catalytic mechanisms. Moreover, we discuss advantages and disadvantages of three chemical catalytic strategies. Finally, existing limitations and outlook toward controllable selectivity and yield enhancement of value-added products and PET upvaluing technology for scale-up applications are proposed. This review aims to inspire the exploration of waste-to-treasure technologies for renewable-energy-driven waste management toward a circular economy.

Abstract:Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is an important polymer with an annual output second only to polyethylene. The development of PET recycling technologies is therefore necessary to not only eliminate the harm associated with white pollution and microplastics, but also to reduce carbon emissions. Antibacterial PET, one of the most high-value advanced materials, has improved the ability to treat bacterial infections. However, current methods of manufacturing commercial antibacterial PET require blending with an excess of metal-based antibacterial agents, which leads to biotoxicity and a nonpersistent antibacterial activity. In addition, high-efficiency organic antibacterial agents have yet to be employed in antibacterial PET due to their poor thermal stabilities. Herein, a solid-state reaction for the upcycling of PET waste using a novel hyperthermostable antibacterial monomer is described. This reaction is catalyzed by the residual catalyst present in the PET waste. It is found that a catalytic amount of the antibacterial monomer enabled the low-cost upcycling of PET waste to produce high-value recycled PET with a strong and persistent antibacterial activity, as well as similar thermal properties to the virgin PET. This work provides a feasible and economic strategy for the large-scale upcycling of PET waste and exhibits potential for application in the polymer industry.

Abstract:In conjunction with the extensive production and widespread utilization of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastics, the issue of environmental pollution resulting from PET product disposal has gained increasing prominence. Consequently, researchers have been focusing on the development of cost-effective, sustainable, environmentally friendly, and efficient methodologies for recycling waste PET plastics and converting them into value-added products. PET, being a polymer with a high carbon content, serves as an exemplary carbon source for various carbon materials, encompassing porous carbon materials and carbon dots. Hence, it is imperative to design and develop carbon materials with solid functionality and wide-ranging applications utilizing waste PET. Additionally, PET can be depolymerized to produce terephthalic acid (TPA), which finds extensive application as an organic ligand for synthesizing metal-organic frameworks materials (MOFs). Consequently, low-cost waste PET is regarded as an optimal precursor for the large-scale preparation of MOFs. Converting waste PET into MOFs presents a novel strategy for chemical recycling. This review presents the recent advancements in functional upcycling and high value-added conversion of waste PET plastics, such as carbon materials, MOFs, aerogel and hydrogel. It comprehensively outlines the preparation methods for diverse categories of porous carbon materials and MOFs, emphasizing their applications in adsorption, energy storage, and catalysis, while also proposing future research directions pertaining to waste PET plastics.

Abstract:Plastic pollution has escalated into a critical global issue, with production soaring from 2 million metric tons in 1950 to 400.3 million metric tons in 2022. The packaging industry alone accounts for nearly 44% of this production, predominantly utilizing polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Alarmingly, over 90% of the approximately 1 million PET bottles sold every minute end up in landfills or oceans, where they can persist for centuries. This highlights the urgent need for sustainable management and recycling solutions to mitigate the environmental impact of PET waste. To better understand PET's behavior and promote its management within a circular economy, we examined its chemical and physical properties, current strategies in the circular economy, and the most effective recycling methods available today. Advancing PET management within a circular economy framework by closing industrial loops has demonstrated benefits such as reduced landfill waste, minimized energy consumption, and conserved raw resources. To this end, we identified and examined various strategies based on R-imperatives (ranging from 3R to 10R), focusing on the latest approaches aimed at significantly reducing PET waste by 2040. Additionally, a comparison of PET recycling methods (including primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary recycling, along with the concepts of "zero-order" and biological recycling techniques) was envisaged. Particular attention was paid to the heterogeneous catalytic glycolysis, which stands out for its rapid reaction time (20–60 min), high monomer yields (>90%), ease of catalyst recovery and reuse, lower costs, and enhanced durability. Accordingly, the use of highly efficient oxide-based catalysts for PET glycolytic degradation is underscored as a promising solution for large-scale industrial applications.

Abstract:Plastic waste is globally ubiquitous and ecologically harmful, but it can be recycled as an abundant carbon source to alleviate worldwide heavy dependence on fossil resources and reduce CO2 emissions. Therefore, the chemical recycling of plastic waste has become an important and urgent research topic. Compared to polyolefins, polyesters, represented by PET and PLA, can easily achieve selective depolymerization to their corresponding monomers due to the presence of ester bonds, thus favoring their closed-loop recycling and upcycling. However, a comprehensive review on this important topic remains scarce. Most previous reviews have focused on summarizing the depolymerization methods of polyesters, but the correlation between their depolymerization and re/upcycling, as well as their corresponding challenges has not been discussed in depth, especially from the standpoint of re/upcycling. In this review, we present significant progress in the catalytic depolymerization of different polyesters, including biodegradable polyesters (e.g., PLA, PHB, and PLC) and nonbiodegradable polyesters (e.g., PET, PEF, and PBT), and discuss the key factors limiting the efficacies of the different methods and formidable challenges in closed-loop recycling and upcycling. Such insightful discussion may benefit for the further development of advanced strategies to address the problems of increasing amounts of waste polyester plastic.

Current PET recycling methods, including mechanical and chemical recycling, have limitations such as high costs and environmental pollution. Recently, biological degradation using enzymes has emerged as a promising eco-friendly alternative. This review summarizes the latest advancements in the engineering of PET-degrading enzymes, focusing on their sources, characteristics, and modifications. It aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the enzymatic degradation of PET, highlighting the genetic enhancement, large-scale production, and immobilization of these biocatalysts to facilitate the green recycling of PET waste.

Abstract:Polyethelene terephthalate (PET) is a well-known thermoplastic, and recycling PET waste is important for the natural environment and human health. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the recycling and reuse of PET waste through energy recovery and physical, chemical, and biological recycling. This article summarizes the recycling methods and the high-value products derived from PET waste, specifically detailing the research progress on regenerated PET prepared by the mechanical recycling of fiber/yarn, fabric, and composite materials, and introduces the application of PET nanofibers recycled by physical dissolution and electrospinning in fields such as filtration, adsorption, electronics, and antibacterial materials. This article explains the energy recovery of PET through thermal decomposition and comprehensively discusses various chemical recycling methods, including the reaction mechanisms, catalysts, conversion efficiencies, and reaction products, with a brief introduction to PET biodegradation using hydrolytic enzymes provided. The analysis and comparison of various recycling methods indicated that the mechanical recycling method yielded PET products with a wide range of applications in composite materials. Electrospinning is a highly promising recycling strategy for fabricating recycled PET nanofibers. Compared to other methods, physical recycling has advantages such as low cost, low energy consumption, high value, simple processing, and environmental friendliness, making it the preferred choice for the recycling and high-value utilization of waste PET.

Abstract:Plastic waste management, particularly addressing the challenges of Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste, has become increasingly urgent in the face of escalating environmental concerns. This paper critically examines glycolysis-based PET recycling, focusing on its potential as a promising solution. Despite its lightweight properties and cost-effectiveness advantages, PET waste poses multifaceted challenges, including contaminant removal, scale-up hurdles, and economic viability. Catalyst optimization and maintaining end-product quality are crucial for enhancing recycling efficiency and market acceptance. Moreover, this review underscores the importance of environmental impact assessments and regulatory compliance in guiding sustainable waste management practices. To overcome infrastructure limitations and foster global collaboration, concerted efforts are needed to educate consumers and facilitate international cooperation. By addressing these challenges, glycolysis-based PET recycling holds promise in mitigating plastic pollution and promoting a circular economy. Abstract:The polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is one of the major plastics with a huge annual production. Alongside with its mass production and wide applications, PET pollution is threatening and damaging the environment and human health. Although mechanical or chemical methods can deal with PET, the process suffers from high cost and the hydrolyzed monomers will cause secondary pollution. Discovery of plastic-degrading microbes and the corresponding enzymes emerges new hope to cope with this issue. Combined with synthetic biology and metabolic engineering, microbial cell factories not only provide a promising approach to degrade PET, but also enable the conversion of its monomers, ethylene glycol (EG) and terephthalic acid (TPA), into value-added compounds. In this way, PET wastes can be handled in environment-friendly and more potentially cost-effective processes. While PET hydrolases have been extensively reviewed, this review focuses on the microbes and metabolic pathways for the degradation of PET monomers. In addition, recent advances in the biotransformation of TPA and EG into value-added compounds are discussed in detail.

Abstract:While polyethylene terephthalate (PET) has enjoyed widespread use, a large volume of plastic waste has also been produced as a result, which is detrimental to the environment. Traditional treatment of plastic waste, such as landfilling and incinerating waste, causes environmental pollution and poses risks to public health. Recycling PET waste into useful chemicals or upcycling the waste into high value-added materials can be remedies. This review first provides a brief introduction of the synthesis, structure, properties, and applications of virgin PET. Then the conversion process of waste PET into high value-added materials for different applications are introduced. The conversion mechanisms (including degradation, recycling and upcycling) are detailed. The advanced applications of these upgraded materials in energy storage devices (supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries, and microbial fuel cells), and for water treatment (to remove dyes, heavy metals, and antibiotics), environmental remediation (for air filtration, CO 2 adsorption, and oil removal) and catalysis (to produce H 2 , photoreduce CO 2 , and remove toxic chemicals) are discussed at length. In general, this review details the exploration of advanced technologies for the transformation of waste PET into nanostructured materials for various applications, and provides insights into the role of high value-added waste products in sustainability and economic development.

Abstract:Plastic pollution has been a topic of grave concern worldwide due to major environmental, economic, health, and social impacts. Nevertheless, our society is far from casting plastics aside since they are essential for several applications ( e.g. food packaging, automotive, electronics, building, and construction). Poly(terephtalate ethylene) (PET), an important synthetic polyester derived from petroleum, is extensively used in plastic packaging (mainly bottles and trays). Unfortunately, no greener polymer alternative has large-scale production to meet global demand. Consequently, plastic recycling is the most sustainable approach to manage the massive amounts of post-consumed PET materials, by recovering its monomeric units: terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol. However, current recycling methods are still costly, leading to more expensive reclaimed PET monomers than virgin ones obtained from fossil sources. Recently, PET upcycling emerged as a profitable strategy to value the reclaimed monomers by converting them into molecules with higher added value, enhancing the recycling process viability. In this review, we addressed all valuable commodities produced from the conversion of PET monomers catalyzed by microorganisms, as an eco-friendly process known as biological upcycling or bio-upcycling. We provided an outlook regarding potential markets and highlighted the benefits of the PET bio-upcycling route over the actual industrial production of each commodity. Moreover, we discussed different PET recycling methods employed to recover monomers prior to the bio-upcycling step, highlighting the pros and cons. Additionally, we addressed critical considerations about the major challenges regarding this novel recycling strategy, particularly in upscaling from lab-scale stage to real-world implementation.

Abstract:The random disposal and immature recycling of post-consumer polyethylene terephthalate (PET) packages lead to a severe threaten to the ecological system owing to slow natural degradation kinetics of PET plastic, and meanwhile cause a waste of carbon resources stored in PET plastics. Many methods have been developed to recycle PET plastics, such as mechanical recycling, which induced a reduced property relative to the virgin PET. In recent years, the photocatalytic conversion of PET plastic wastes into chemicals has received considerable attention due to their unique advantages, including mild conditions, less energy consumption, and simple operation. In this review, we have summarized the latest achievements in photoreforming of PET plastics into value-added chemicals. Primarily, we described the mechanism for bond cleavage during PET photoreforming, the emerging pretreatment methodologies for PET plastics, and the advantages of photocatalytic PET plastics conversion. Then, we introduced electro-/bio-assisted photocatalysis technologies for PET disposal and commented their strengths and limitations. Finally, we put forward the challenges and potential advances in the domain of photocatalytic PET plastics conversion.

Integrated oncology course for first-year medical students.

The course is characterized by a high level of integration of the involved basic and clinical sciences and is designed according to the principles of problem-based learning. A limited number of lectures provides a frame of reference. A series of case histories introduces the students to various aspects of neoplastic disease and after group discussions leads the students to individual learning activities. During the course only general principles are touched upon. Students, as well as teaching staff, appear to be highly appreciative of the integrated approach.

It is widely found in objects used daily, including packaging materials (such as bottles and containers), textiles (such as fibers), and even in the automotive and electronics industries. PET is known for its excellent mechanical properties, chemical resistance, and transparency. However, these features (e.g., high hydrophobicity and high molecular weight) also make PET highly resistant to degradation by wild-type microorganisms or physicochemical methods in nature, contributing to the accumulation of plastic waste in the environment. Therefore, accelerated PET recycling is becoming increasingly urgent to address the global environmental problem caused by plastic wastes and prevent plastic pollution. In addition to traditional physical cycling (e.g., pyrolysis, gasification) and chemical cycling (e.g., chemical depolymerization), biodegradation can be used, which involves breaking down organic materials into simpler compounds by microorganisms or PET-degrading enzymes. Lipases and cutinases are the two classes of enzymes that have been studied extensively for this purpose. Biodegradation of PET is an attractive approach for managing PET waste, as it can help reduce environmental pollution and promote a circular economy. During the past few years, great advances have been accomplished in PET biodegradation. In this review, current knowledge on cutinase-like PET hydrolases (such as TfCut2, Cut190, HiC, and LCC) was described in detail, including the structures, ligand–protein interactions, and rational protein engineering for improved PET-degrading performance. In particular, applications of the engineered catalysts were highlighted, such as improving the PET hydrolytic activity by constructing fusion proteins. The review is expected to provide novel insights for the biodegradation of complex polymers.

Abstract:Since plastic waste pollution is a severe environmental concern in modern life, the demand for recycling poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) has increased due to its versatile applications. Taking advantage of plastic recycling methods creates the chances of minimizing overall crude oil-based materials consumption, and as a result, greenhouse gasses, specifically CO2, will be decreased. Although many review articles have been published on plastic recycling methods from different aspects, a few review articles exist to investigate the organic reaction mechanism in plastic recycling. This review aims to describe other processes for recycling bottle waste of PET, considering the reaction mechanism. Understanding the reaction mechanism offers practical solutions toward protecting the environment against disadvantageous outgrowths rising from PET wastes. PET recycling aims to transform into a monomer/oligomer to produce new materials from plastic wastes. It is an application in various fields, including the food and beverage industry, packaging, and textile applications, to protect the environment from contamination and introduce a green demand for the near future. In this review, the chemical glycolysis process as an outstanding recycling technique for PET is also discussed, emphasizing the catalysts' performance, reaction conditions and methods, degradation agents, the kinetics of reactions, and reprocessing products. In general, a correct understanding of the PET recycling reaction mechanism leads to making the right decisions in waste management.

Abstract:Upcycling of Plastics In the article number 2403728, Weipu Zhu and co‐workers report an optimal approach without additional catalysts and solvents for the upcycling of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) waste. Specifically, bio‐based hydrogenated dimer acids are found to directly convert PET bottles into biodegradable copolyesters suitable for agricultural mulch films. This work provides an environmentally friendly and cost‐effective strategy for the large‐scale upcycling of PET waste.
