Abstract:Since water source treatment processes are generally done chemically (e.g., via surface adsorption), the ongoing synthesis of new and efficient adsorbent materials is necessary. Hence, in this study, a new and magnetic CuFe 12 O 19 /CuS nanoadsorbent was synthesized on a laboratory scale, using the extract of the Artemisia plant as a reducing agent, and its morphological features were specified using FESEM, FT-IR, XRD, TEM, BET, EDS, DLS, and VSM analyses. Then, its efficiency was assessed in the surface adsorption of a tetracycline pollutant, whereby the pH, contact time, initial pollutant concentration, nanocomposite dose, and temperature parameters were studied. The results indicate that the investigated adsorbent was correctly synthesized. It had many pores and an appropriate and specific surface on which to perform the adsorption process, and it also demonstrated superparamagnetic features. In addition, the results of removal processes showed that with increasing pH, the adsorption efficiency first increases from 21.02 to 80.02% and then decreases to 56.14%. Meanwhile, with increasing nanocomposite dose and temperature, the adsorption percentage rises to 94.08% and 96.84%, respectively, and with the increase in the initial concentration of the pollutant, the adsorption efficiency decreases to 45.19%. Thus, under optimal conditions (nanoadsorbent dose of 2 g/L, tetracycline concentration of 20 mg/L, and neutral pH over 200 min), a 100% efficiency in the tetracycline adsorption process can be obtained. The data obtained from nonlinear models of the Langmuir ( R 2 = 0.903), Freundlich ( R 2 = 0.72), and Temkin ( R 2 = 0.99) equilibrium isotherms showed that the adsorption process of tetracycline through green magnetic CuFe 12 O 19 /CuS nanocomposite synthesized with Temkin model is compatible. Furthermore, the data obtained from the reaction's kinetic calculations show that the adsorption of tetracycline in this process can be described according to the pseudo-quadratic model ( R 2 = 0.999). Also, based on the results of thermodynamic studies including entropy changes (ΔS = 104.34 J/mol. k), enthalpy changes (ΔH = − 47.71 kJ/mol), and negative Gibbs free energy (ΔG), we conclude that the desired adsorption process is endothermic. Additionally, investigating the recovery and reuse of the synthesized nanocomposite in this research showed that after five consecutive cycles, the efficiency of the adsorbent is reduced by 14.67%. Finally, based on the results obtained in the present study, we may conclude that tetracycline can be removed from aqueous environments by the CuFe 12 O 19 /CuS magnetic nanocomposite synthesized using the green method.

Abstract:Magnetic nanoparticle materials which could be used to remove tetracycline were confined seriously due to their poor stability and unsatisfactory reusability. Here, we facilely prepared novel zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4@PDA-ZIF-8) adsorbent utilizing polydopamine as a bond to establish a connection between zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 and Fe3O4, which could improve the stability of magnetic nanoparticles and enhance the tetracycline adsorption capacity simultaneously. The prepared nanocomposites were characterized and their TC adsorption abilities under various experiment conditions (contact time, TC initial concentration and pH values) were also investigated. Experimental results proved that the prepared adsorbent showed superior TC adsorption capacities (92.01 mg/g at pH = 7). Further, the adsorption mechanisms were comprehensively studied and the prepared adsorbent showed satisfactory stability and reusability during the cycle experiment. Altogether, our findings provided a feasible way to design and construct functional magnetic MOF materials for enhancing tetracycline adsorption from wastewater.

Several characterizations show that the as-prepared Fe3O4 nanoparticles possess a saturation magnetization of 79.4 emu/g, a specific surface area of 58.8 m2/g and an average particle size of 25 nm. Batch experiments were carried out to investigate the adsorption behavior and mechanisms. For a 100 ml TC solution with an initial concentration of 10 mg/L, the TC absorption reached adsorption-desorption equilibrium with a removal efficiency of 97.2% in 90 min. Adsorption kinetic and isotherm studies demonstrated that the adsorption process fits well with pseudo-second-order kinetics models. The Langmuir isotherm model was found to be more suitable than the Freundlich isotherm model for describing the adsorption equilibrium data. Adsorption between Fe3O4 and TC is achieved by the formation of hydrogen bonds between the H atoms of the C–O(H) bonds located at the B or D ring of TC and the O atoms of Fe3O4. Furthermore, the hydrogen bonds formed at the octahedral site are stronger than those formed at the tetrahedral site. This new understanding provides an important reference and guidance for the design and modification of Fe3O4-based nanomaterials for TC removal.

Abstract:Bimetal doped Cu-Fe-zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8)/graphitic carbon nitride (GCN) (Cu-Fe-ZIF-8/GCN) nanocomposites were prepared via one-pot and ion-exchange methods. The main influencing factors, such as adsorbent concentration, TC concentration, initial pH, and coexisting ions, were evaluated in detail. Due to the suitable pore structures and the presence of multiple interactions on the surface, the nanocomposite showed a high adsorption capacity up to 932 mg g-1 for tetracycline hydrochloride (TC), outperforming ZIF-8 by 4.8 times. The adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm were depicted in good detail using pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir models, respectively. Thermodynamic calculation revealed that the adsorption of the nanocomposite under experimental conditions was a spontaneous heat absorption process, and was primarily driven by chemisorption. After four cycles of use, the nanocomposite retained 87.2% of its initial adsorption capacity, confirming its high reusability and broad application prospects in removing tetracycline-type pollutants from wastewater.

Abstract:The efficient removal of antibiotic residues from aqueous solution is very important for water security. Studies have found that adsorption is widely used for the removal of antibiotics due to its cost-effectiveness, low energy consumption, simplicity of operation, and environmental friendliness. In this study, a novel magnetic porous carbon adsorbent (Ni-MPC-400) with a high adsorption capacity and saturation magnetization was synthesized via direct carbonization of Ni-MOF at 400 °C pyrolysis temperature and used to efficiently remove tetracycline from an aqueous solution. Adsorption experiments showed that Ni-MPC-400 exhibited excellent tetracycline adsorption capacity (441.51 mg·g–1) from the aqueous solution. Possible adsorption mechanisms were proposed through characterization and analysis. The adsorption mechanisms mainly involved π–π interactions, hydrogen bonding, metal–organic complexation, and pore filling effects. In addition, Ni-MPC-400 showed rapid and sufficient adsorption at a low concentration of tetracycline (5 mg·L–1) and good adsorption performance over a wide pH range. In addition, the material has been tested to have good immunity to interference and regenerative capacity, demonstrating a potential application in the removal of tetracycline contaminants from aqueous solutions.

Abstract:Herein, tetracycline adsorption employing magnetic chitosan (CS‧Fe3O4) as the adsorbent is reported. The magnetic adsorbent was synthesized by the co-precipitation method and characterized through FTIR, XRD, SEM, and VSM analyses. The experimental data showed that the highest maximum adsorption capacity was reached at pH 7.0 (211.21 mg g−1). The efficiency of the magnetic adsorbent in tetracycline removal was dependent on the pH, initial concentration of adsorbate, and the adsorbent dosage. Additionally, the ionic strength showed a significant effect on the process. The equilibrium and kinetics studies demonstrate that Sips and Elovich models showed the best adjustment for experimental data, suggesting that the adsorption occurs in a heterogeneous surface and predominantly by chemical mechanisms. The experimental results suggest that tetracycline adsorption is mainly governed by the hydrogen bonds and cation–π interactions due to its pH dependence as well as the enhancement in the removal efficiency with the magnetite incorporation on the chitosan surface, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters indicate a spontaneous and exothermic process. Finally, magnetic chitosan proves to be efficient in TC removal even after several adsorption/desorption cycles.

Abstract:An eco-friendly approach was used to fabricate zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) using thyme, Thymus vulgaris L., leaf extract. The produced ZnO nanoparticles were characterized by XRD and SEM analysis. The ZnO NPs showed remarkable adsorption efficiency for tetracycline (TC) from water systems, with a maximum removal rate of 95% under optimal conditions (10 ppm, 0.10 g of ZnO NPs, pH 8.5, and 30 min at 25 °C). The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-2nd-order model, and the adsorption process fitted the Temkin isotherm model. The process was spontaneous, endothermic, and primarily chemisorptive. Quantum chemistry calculations, utilizing electrostatic potential maps and HOMO-LUMO gap analysis, have confirmed the stability of the TC clusters. This study suggests that green synthesis using plant extracts presents an opportunity to generate nanoparticles with properties suitable for real-world applications.

Abstract:Nanocomposites of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) with ferromagnetic α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles have been prepared in-situ by thermal treatment. The structure and morphology of the hybrid material were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. The results show a hybrid material highly modified with α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles distributed on the graphene surface. The adsorption kinetics show the presence of α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles on the RGO surface, and the amount of remaining functional groups dominated by ionization and dispersion. The adsorption kinetics of this adsorbent was characterized and found to fit the pseudo-second-order model. The α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles on RGO modify the electrostatic interaction of RGO layers and tetracycline, and adsorption properties decreased in the hybrid material. Adsorption isotherms fit with the Langmuir model very well, and the maximum capacity adsorption was 44.23 mg/g for RGO and 18.47 mg/g for the hybrid material. Magnetic characterization of the hybrid material shows ferromagnetic behavior due to the nanosize of α-Fe2O3 with a saturation magnetization, Ms = 7.15 Am2/kg, a remanence Mr = 2.29 Am2/kg, and a coercive field, Hc = 0.02 T.

Abstract:In the present study, starch/zeolitic imidazole framework-67 (ZIF-67) modified magnetic montmorillonite nanocomposite adsorbent to remove tetracycline (TC) as an emerging antibiotic-based contaminant from aqueous media. The surface properties of the adsorbents were investigated using FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDX-Map, XPS, TEM, BET, and VSM analysis. The specific surface area of MMT, St/MMT-MnFe 2 O 4 , and St/MMT-MnFe 2 O 4 -ZIF-67 magnetic nanocomposite samples were found to be 15.63, 20.54, and 588.41Ā m 2 /g, respectively. The influence of pH, adsorbent amount, initial TC concentration, temperature, contact time, and coexisting ions on TC elimination was explored in a batch adsorption system. The kinetic and equilibrium data were well matched with the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm models, respectively. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacities of TC were obtained to be 40.24, 66.1, and 135.2Ā mg/g by MMT, St/MMT-MnFe 2 O 4 , and St/MMT-MnFe 2 O 4 -ZIF-67 magnetic nanocomposite adsorbents, respectively. Also, thermodynamic studies illustrated that the TC adsorption process is exothermic and spontaneous. Furthermore, the magnetic nanocomposite adsorbent St/MMT-MnFe 2 O 4 -ZIF-67 showed good reusability and could be recycled for up to five cycles. This excellent adsorption performance, coupled with the facile separation of the magnetic nanocomposite, gave St/MMT-MnFe 2 O 4 -ZIF-67 a high potential for TC removal from aqueous media.

Abstract:Tetracycline (TC) antibiotic-related water pollution directly threatens human health and ecosystems. Here, a zinc ferrite/chitosan-curdlan (ZNF/CHT-CRD) magnetic composite was prepared via a co-precipitation method to be used as a novel, green adsorbent for TC removal from water. Benefiting from a multitude of functional groups, CRD was first crosslinked with CHT and then magnetized with ZNF to provide an easy separation from the solution with an external magnetic force. The successful synthesis and magnetization of the composite were verified with different characterization techniques. The effect of solution pH and composite dosage was carefully evaluated. The optimum solution pH and composite dosage were 6 and 0.65 g/L, respectively, with complete TC removal. The adsorption process by the magnetic composite followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models. The maximum adsorption capacity determined from the Langmuir model was 371.42 mg/g at 328 K. Thermodynamic parameters indicated endothermic and spontaneous adsorption. Meanwhile, the composite could be readily separated from the aqueous solution thanks to its magnetic property. Then, it was regenerated with acetone and ethanol to be reused for five more successive cycles. Interestingly, the prepared adsorbent was highly stable and performant in removing TC, maintaining approximately 90 % of its first-cycle adsorption capacity. The adsorption mechanism was primarily attributed to electrostatic and hydrogen bonding attractions. Overall, the currently developed adsorbent could be a more favorable, efficient, and cost-effective candidate than other magnetic chitosan-based composites. These features make it applicable for treating water contaminated with various pharmaceutical pollutants with high separation efficiency and easy recovery under successive adsorption-desorption cycles.
Polydopamine magnetic microspheres grafted with sulfonic acid groups for efficient adsorption of tetracycline

Abstract:The abuse of antibiotics poses a serious threat to human health and ecosystems. In this study, magnetic polydopamine sub-microspheres (Fe3O4@PDA-SO3H) with many sulfonic acid groups were firstly synthesized to remove tetracycline antibiotics. The adsorption capability was examined under different conditions such as pH, initial concentration, and contact time. We found that the maximum adsorption capacity reached 138.98 mg/g, and equilibrium adsorption data were more consistent with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Additionally, the results showed that π-π stacking interaction and electrostatic interaction might significantly affect the adsorption process. The adsorbent could maintain a high adsorption level after six cycles. Therefore, Fe3O4@PDA-SO3H could be considered as a promising adsorbent for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) has been recognized as one of the natural systems' most active mineral oxidants. However, when it comes to catalytic oxidation of antibiotic applications, pure MnO 2 falls short in delivering satisfactory performance. Hence, a set of Fe 3+ -doped porous MnO 2 (0.02Fe–MnO 2 , 0.1Fe–MnO 2 , and 0.14Fe–MnO 2 ) nanoparticles were synthesized here via a convenient and energy-efficient one-step reaction method. A series of experiments revealed that Fe-doping strategy enhances the properties of MnO 2 host by suppressing the crystalline structure, increasing the amount of surface oxygen defects, and modifying the Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ ratio. Specifically, the tetracycline (TC) removal efficiency of 0.14Fe–MnO 2 reaches 92% without the need for any additional co-oxidant, representing a 20% improvement over pristine MnO 2 nanoparticles. Moreover, this process shows a fast dynamic (achieving 70% of TC removal in just 5 min) and demonstrates pH-resistance, maintaining high TC removal efficiency (≥90%) over a wide pH range of 3.0–9.0. Mechanical studies reveal that the degradation of TC can be attributed to the oxidation by reactive oxygen radicals and Mn 3+ , with 1 O 2 being the primary radical involved in the reaction, accounting for 55% of TC removal. Importantly, cytotoxicity testing indicates that the biotoxicity of TC toward organisms can be effectively mitigated using 0.14Fe–MnO 2 nanomaterial. This study presents a readily applicable candidate for economically and conveniently eliminating of environmental TC pollution, thereby reducing the threat posed by TC pollution to the ecosystem.

Abstract:Effective removal of tetracycline (TC) from wastewater is highly important while still faces challenges especially in adsorption capacity. Herein, a novel N-doped magnetic porous graphitic carbon sphere (N-MPGCS) adsorbent was fabricated by a green strategy using tannic acid (TA) as organic ligand and stainless steel pickling wastewater as metal source. Melamine was also introduced to increase nitrogen-containing functional groups. Among the obtained carbon spheres, N-MPGCS 1–800 sample shows a large specific surface area (up to 922.78 m 2 g −1 ), appropriate O/N functional groups, suitable sp 2 carbon, and good magnetic responsivity. Benefiting from these merits, this optimal material exhibits a high Langmuir adsorption capacity (1005.5 mg g −1 at 45 °C) for TC, fast adsorption kinetics (5 min for adsorption equilibration time at 50 mg L −1 ), and good applicability towards pH (3−10) and co-existing ions. Besides, the excellent magnetism permits the convenient and rapid recovery of adsorbent from the adsorption system. Moreover, the high TC removal ratio (92.3% after three cycles) presents its outstanding regeneration. Adsorption studies and characterizations show that H-bond, π-π stacking, metal-organic complexation interactions, and pore-filling effect contribute to the adsorption together. In addition, N-MPGCS 1–800 also shows good removal on enrofloxacin, moxifloxacin, and norfloxacin. This work proves that N-MPGCS material can serve as a potential adsorbent, and more importantly, it gives a new path for mining industrial waste to produce high-effective magnetic carbon materials.

Easy-regeneration Mn-doped ZIF-67 derivate adsorbent with ultra-high adsorption capacity for tetracycline hydrochloride in wastewater

Abstract:Adsorption capacity and reusability are critical to the practical applications of metal–organic framework (MOF)-based adsorbents. In this work, an easy-regeneration ZIF-67 derivate adsorbent (Mn-ZIF-400) was synthesized by calcining the manganese-modified MOF ZIF-67 (Mn-ZIF-67) precursor at 400 °C in air for the first time. Mn-ZIF-400 reveals an ultra-high adsorption capacity for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) ( q max = 1191.5 mg⋅g −1 at 308 K at pH = 4) in a wide pH range (pH = 3–10) owing to its great surface area (816.2 m 2 ⋅g −1 ), surface polyvalent metal ions (Co 2+ /Co 3+ , Mn 2+ / Mn 3+ / Mn 4+ ), abundant surface oxygen species (including –COOH, –OH etc.) and π-electrons from benzene-ring. The adsorption mechanism of TCH on Mn-ZIF-400 belongs to the monolayer chemisorption mainly by π-π conjugation/π-cation interactions, hydrogen/coordination bonding, and pore filling. It also can maintain high adsorption performance in an actual aqueous environment. More importantly, Mn-ZIF-400 showed enhanced water stability and reusability after modification and no obvious loss in adsorption capacity in four recycles via simple water washing, being a promising adsorbent for antibiotic elimination.

Abstract:"In this paper we examine measures of population aging in China from 1953 to 1982, and then project population aging to the year 2050 using a cohort-components methodology.... Results indicate that China's population will age at an unprecedented rate over the next 70 years, both in terms of the absolute size of the elderly population and their proportion of the total population. At least 50 percent of the projected increase in population aging in China between 1980 and 2050 will be a product of the momentum for aging that is already built into the present age structure and vital rates. However, prospective trends in the measures of population aging become increasingly more sensitive to varying assumptions about fertility and mortality with time, and as older age groups are considered."
Fabrication of magnetic trimetallic metal-organic frameworks for the rapid removal of tetracycline from water

Abstract:The metal-organic framework (MOF-74) series has the most open metal sites. The metal ions have different bonding strengths with the ligand in MOF-74 and the bond of the ligand can be successively broken to obtain highly active heteroparticles by controlling the temperature, which is difficult to achieve using traditional methods. Magnetic NiCo/Fe3O4-MOF-74, which is fabricated using trimetallic NiCoFe-MOF-74 as a precursor, is simple and rational in comparison with the traditional magnetic core and tunable MOF shell hybrid composites that are formed using a step-by-step assembly strategy. After thermal treatment under a specific atmosphere, NiCo/Fe3O4-MOF-74 shows higher stability, strong magnetism and more active metal sites compared to the original MOF. NiCo/Fe3O4-MOF-74 shows excellent enrichment capability for the removal of tetracycline, with a high removal efficiency that reached 94.1% within 5 min, which is much higher than that of NiCoFe-MOF-74. The main interaction between the adsorbent and analyte is most likely attributed to the open metal sites that can form a stable metal-ligand with the antibiotic molecules. Furthermore, the material can be reused five times without considerable loss. The prepared material has potential applications for removing antibiotics with high efficiency at low cost. Therefore, the experiments described in this study provide a route to a broad class of MOF-based materials for detecting organic contaminants.

Abstract:In this work, core–shell structured Fe 3 O 4 @PCN-333 (Fe) composite was constructed using a self-template method, in which Fe 3 O 4 microspheres not only serve as magnetic centers but also provide Fe (III) for the preparation of PCN-333 (Fe). PCN-333 (Fe) uniformly grew as a shell on the surfaces of the microspheres, and the shell thickness was approximately 38 nm. The composite exhibited high adsorption performance, with maximum adsorption capacities of 471.7, 303.3 and 314.5 mg/g for chlortetracycline, tetracycline and oxytetracycline, respectively. The adsorption of tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) was based on the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order model, and external diffusion and pore diffusion were the rate-limiting steps in adsorption. The strong adsorption capacity was attributed to the mechanism of π–π interaction, coordination bonds, electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and van der Waals force. Fe 3 O 4 @PCN-333 (Fe) composite displayed good stability in the aqueous solution, strong TCs adsorption capacity, high selectivity, anti-interference performance for adsorbing TCs, fast recovery with external magnetic field, reusability, thus effectively reducing the cost for removing water pollutants. These features make the composite a potential material for removing TCs in the environment.

Abstract:With the abuse of tetracycline antibiotics and their high detection rate in the water environment, causing non-negligible environmental hazards and health risks, the treatment of tetracycline wastewater has been paid much attention. Herein, a noval magnetic adsorbent, nitrilotriacetic acid-modified magnetic chitosan microspheres (NDMCMs) was successfully prepared and applied to remove tetracycline antibiotics (TC) from wastewater. The results found that the solution pH and ion strength greatly affected the adsorption capacity of TC by NDMCMs. Additionally, the adsorption capacity of NDMCMs (373.5 mg g−1) was four times higher than that of MCMs (92 mg g−1) at pH 8.0, attributed to the various amino and carboxyl groups in the grafted chain. The experiment data were better correlated with the Freundlich isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating that the adsorption between TC and adsorbent surfaces occurred as multilayer adsorption, and the chemical interaction played as a rate-limiting step in the adsorption process. The thermodynamic parameter calculation results demonstrated that the adsorption of TC by NDMCMs followed a spontaneous, endothermic, and orderly process. Besides, the regeneration performance of NDMCMs showed that it is fully qualified for practical application of TC adsorption. The adsorption mechanism proposed by the FT-IR spectroscopic analysis of the adsorbent before and after the adsorption of TC was mainly through π-π interaction, cation-π bond, hydrogen bond, and amidation reaction. Based on all experimental results, NDMCMs is an efficient and sustainable magnetic adsorbent, which can be used to remove TC from wastewater.

Abstract:Abstract Antibiotics are emerging pollutants and increasingly present in aquaculture and industrial wastewater. Due to their impact on the environment and health, their removal has recently become a significant concern. In this investigation, we synthesized nano zero-valent iron-loaded magnetic mesoporous silica (Fe-MCM-41-A) via precipitation and applied the adsorption of oxytetracycline (OTC) from an aqueous solution. The effects of competing ions such as Na + , Ca 2+ and Cu 2+ on the adsorption process under different pH conditions were studied in depth to providing a theoretical basis for the application of nanomaterials. The characterization of the obtained material through transmission electron microscopy demonstrates that the adsorbent possesses hexagonal channels, which facilitate mass transfer during adsorption. The loaded zero-valent iron made the magnetic, and was thus separated under an applied magnetic field. The adsorption of OTC onto Fe-MCM-41-A is rapid and obeys the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the maximum adsorption capacity of OTC is 625.90 mg g −1 . The reaction between OTC and Fe-MCM-41-A was inner complexation and was less affected by the Na + . The effect of Ca 2+ on the adsorption was small under acidic and neutral conditions. However, the promotion effect of Ca 2+ increased by the increase of pH. Cu 2+ decreased the removal efficiencies continuously and the inhibitory effects decrease varied with the increase of pH. We propose that surface complexing, ion-exchange, cationic π-bonding, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobicity are responsible for the adsorption of OTC onto Fe-MCM-41-A.
