Abstract:To better understand the long-term survival of modern coral reefs under global warming, the history of past coral bleaching events prior to modern marine ecological surveys must be investigated. Here, 11 dead Porites and 2 Porites with growth hiatuses growing in the 20th century were collected from the Nansha Islands, southern South China Sea (SCS) for monthly Sr/Ca, δ18O and δ13C analyses to explore the climatic conditions and metabolic information corresponding to these growth structures. Among the 13 episodes, the results showed that 8 mortalities occurred in the summers, coral MJ8 died in spring, and the other 2 mortalities and 2 growth hiatuses occurred in the cooling season. In addition to the dead surface of the coral mortalities, stress bands with significantly reduced growth rates could also be observed in the corals. Negative shifts in δ13C occurred prior to 5 coral mortalities and most stress bands were caused in summer, suggesting a sharp reduction in photosynthesis by decreased symbiotic zooxanthellae or photosynthetic pigments. Overall, the mortalities can be concluded to have occurred in summer and stress bands with abrupt δ13C decreases in the last century were mainly caused by thermal coral bleaching in the southern SCS. This in turn suggests that the repeated coral bleaching and mortalities occurred much earlier before the 1980s, which is a longer-term response to modern global warming during the last century.

Abstract:Morphological classifications of neuronal cells in the mammalian central nervous system (CNS) have been made on the basis of their anatomical structure as revealed by Golgi staining (reviewed extensively in Peters & Jones 1984). Additional characterization of neuronal circuitry has been made by correlating the electrophysiological response properties of single cells with their characteristic dendritic and axonal arborization patterns using intracellular dye or enzyme injections (Kelly & Van Essen 1974, Gilbert & Wiesel 1979, Lin et al. 1979, Somogyi et al. 1979). Antiscra against particular neuroactive substances or neurotransmitter-synthesizing enzymes have also been used to reveal the distribution of different classes of neuronal cell bodies and synaptic terminals. In a number of areas these have shown some correlation between neurotransmitter phenotype and morphological cell class (Pamevelas & McDonald 1983, Houser et al. 1983, Emson & Hunt 1984). It is clear that the above methods cannot give a complete representation of the complexity of cell types in any given area. In addition, they are generally limited to a resolution at the cellular level. There is abundant evidence that neurons are extremely polarized cells and that many functional components are restricted to certain regions of the cell. These restrictions can be found in the selective localization of cytoskeietat elements to either dendrites or axons (Matus et al. 1983) or the clustering of certain types of synapse to the cell body regions of postsynaptic cells (LeVay 1973). Abstract:Anthropogenic stressors continue to escalate worldwide, driving unprecedented declines in reef environmental conditions and coral health. One approach to better understand how corals can function in the future is to examine coral populations that thrive within present day naturally extreme habitats. We applied untargeted metabolomics (gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS)) to contrast metabolite profiles of Pocillopora acuta colonies from hot, acidic and deoxygenated mangrove environments versus those from adjacent reefs. Under ambient temperatures, P. acuta predominantly associated with endosymbionts of the genera Cladocopium (reef) or Durusdinium (mangrove), exhibiting elevated metabolism in mangrove through energy-generating and biosynthesis pathways compared to reef populations. Under transient heat stress, P. acuta endosymbiont associations were unchanged. Reef corals bleached and exhibited extensive shifts in symbiont metabolic profiles (whereas host metabolite profiles were unchanged). By contrast, mangrove populations did not bleach and solely the host metabolite profiles were altered, including cellular responses in inter-partner signalling, antioxidant capacity and energy storage. Thus mangrove P. acuta populations resist periodically high-temperature exposure via association with thermally tolerant endosymbionts coupled with host metabolic plasticity. Our findings highlight specific metabolites that may be biomarkers of heat tolerance, providing novel insight into adaptive coral resilience to elevated temperatures.

The Responses of Sr/Ca, δ18O, and δ13C in the Porites Coral Skeleton to Extreme Thermal Events in the Nansha Islands

Abstract:In recent years, extreme thermal events have become one of the main reasons for coral reef degradation. Determining the variation of coral skeletal geochemical proxies in response to extreme thermal events would be vital evidence for reconstructing historical extreme thermal events using corals. In this study, cores from modern Porites corals YSL24 that lived in 1987-1999 and YSL2A that lived in 1971-1999 were collected from the Yongshu Reef, Nansha Islands, southern South China Sea (SCS) for high-resolution analysis of skeletal Sr/Ca, δ18O, and δ13C to determine the responses of these geochemical proxies to past extreme warming events. There is evidence that extreme warming events occurred in 1973, 1983 and 1998 in the southern SCS during the period 1971-1999. The Sr/Ca ratios in the Porites corals showed a significant negative correlation with the variation in local sea surface temperature (SST), and the values in the bands of these three years were much lower. This suggested a clear record of higher temperatures than other years in response to the warming events in these episodes. Compared with the Sr/Ca ratios, skeletal δ18O proxies in the two Porites corals also revealed a negative correlation with SST, but the δ18O values in these three bands were likely to be less sensitive to the thermal events. This is mainly because the variation in this proxy was controlled by both local SST and sea surface salinity, while the two factors had opposite effects on the seasonal variation of coral δ18O in the SCS. After the removal of the SST contributions, the ∆δ18O series of the Porites corals showed clear annual cycles and a negative correlation with seasonal precipitation, but the records in the bands of those warming years did not reveal clear anomalous shifts due to thermal stress, which might be an inappropriate proxy for identifying extreme warming episodes. In the skeletal δ13C series of Porites corals, an abnormal negative shift was detected during the summers of 1973, 1983, and 1998. This was likely caused by a substantial reduction in photosynthesis of symbiotic zooxanthellae in the coral host cells, a biological reaction of corals responding to thermal stress in the three years. In conclusion, the lower Sr/Ca ratios and negative δ13C shifts in the summer that occurred in the bands of Porites corals in this study, revealed significant coincidence with past extreme warming events. As the Porites corals had a stronger tolerance to thermal stress and much lower bleaching rates than other corals, the abnormal geochemical records in the Porites corals are potential signals indicating local past mass coral bleaching events in recent years.

Abstract:Abstract Coral bleaching, a process where corals expel their photosynthetic symbionts, has a profound impact on the health and function of coral reefs. As global ocean temperatures continue to rise, bleaching poses the greatest threat to coral reef ecosystems. Here, untargeted metabolomics was used to analyze the biochemicals in pairs of adjacent corals from a patch reef in Kāne‘ohe Bay, Hawai‘i, where one colony in the pair bleached (in 2015) and recovered while the other did not bleach. There was a strong metabolomic signature of prior bleaching history four years after recovery found in both the host and its algal symbionts. Machine learning analysis determined that the strongest metabolite drivers of the difference in bleaching phenotype were a group of betaine lipids. Those with saturated fatty acids were significantly enriched in thermally tolerant corals and those with longer, unsaturated and diacyl forms were enriched in historically bleached corals. Host immune response molecules, Lyso-PAF and PAF, were also altered by bleaching history and were strongly correlated with symbiont community and algal-derived metabolites suggesting a role of coral immune modulation in symbiont choice and bleaching response. To validate these findings, we tested a separate in situ set of corals and were able to predict the bleaching phenotype with 100% accuracy. Furthermore, corals subjected to an experimental temperature stress had strong phenotype-specific responses in all components of the holobiont, which served to further increase the differences between historical bleaching phenotypes. Thus, we show that natural bleaching susceptibility is simultaneously manifested in the biochemistry of the coral animal and the algal symbiont and that this bleaching history results in different physiological responses to temperature stress. This work provides insight into the biochemical mechanisms involved in coral bleaching and presents a valuable new tool for resilience-based reef restoration.

Abstract:Coral reefs worldwide are facing rapid decline due to coral bleaching. However, knowledge of the physiological characteristics and molecular mechanisms of coral symbionts respond to stress is scarce. Here, metagenomic and metaproteomic approaches were utilized to shed light on the changes in the composition and functions of coral symbiotic bacteria during coral bleaching. The results demonstrated that coral bleaching significantly affected the composition of symbionts, with bacterial communities dominating in bleached corals. Through differential analyses of gene and protein expression, it becomes evident that symbionts experience functional disturbances in response to heat stress. These disturbances result in abnormal energy metabolism, which could potentially compromise the health and resilience of the symbionts. Furthermore, our findings highlighted the highly diverse microbial communities of coral symbionts, with beneficial bacteria providing critical services to corals in stress responses and pathogenic bacteria driving coral bleaching. This study provides comprehensive insights into the complex response mechanisms of coral symbionts under heat stress from the micro-ecological perspective and offers fundamental data for future monitoring of coral health.

Abstract:The increasing threat of ocean warming has led to the more frequent endangerment of coral reefs, including the heat-tolerant Pavona decussata . To shed light on the molecular mechanisms involved in the response of coral to ocean warming, we investigated the gene expression profiles of P. decussata after natural thermal stress. Using PacBio Sequel II sequencing technology, we obtained relatively complete transcriptome data for P. decussata and then analyzed its gene expression quantitatively with Illumina RNA-seq technology. We acquired information on gene function, structure, and expression profile from coral host and zooxanthellae. Analysis of Illumina sequencing data revealed that unbleached coral host might rely on the active utilization of amino acids to maintain a stable living condition based on the tricarboxylic acid cycle under high temperature stress, and that zooxanthellae might benefit from ammonium produced by coral host. Moreover, the downregulation of unbleached coral host gene expression in innate immune pathways centered on the transcription factors that heat shock factor and nuclear factor (NF)-κB, as well as the tyrosine kinase pathway, might be crucial for maintaining the equilibrium of the zooxanthellae under thermal stress. Thus, the differences in these molecular mechanisms could determine, to some extent, whether coral host can maintain a symbiotic relationship with algae under heat stress. This study elucidated the molecular mechanisms underlying differences in thermal tolerance within P. decussata species and supported further theoretical basis in coral molecular biology and ecological conservation, which enhance our comprehension of coral responses to future climate change.

Abstract:Global warming threatens reef-building corals with large-scale bleaching events; therefore, it is important to discover potential adaptive capabilities for increasing their temperature resistance before it is too late. This study presents two coral species ( Platygyra verweyi and Isopora palifera ) surviving on a reef having regular hot water influxes via a nearby nuclear power plant that exhibited completely different bleaching susceptibilities to thermal stress, even though both species shared several so-called “winner” characteristics ( e.g., containing Durusdinium trenchii , thick tissue, etc. ). During acute heating treatment, algal density did not decline in P. verweyi corals within three days of being directly transferred from 25 to 31 °C; however, the same treatment caused I . palifera to lose < 70% of its algal symbionts within 24 h. The most distinctive feature between the two coral species was an overwhelmingly higher constitutive superoxide dismutase (ca. 10-fold) and catalase (ca. 3-fold) in P. verweyi over I. palifera . Moreover, P. verweyi also contained significantly higher saturated and lower mono-unsaturated fatty acids, especially a long-chain saturated fatty acid (C22:0), than I. palifera , and was consistently associated with the symbiotic bacteria Endozoicomonas , which was not found in I. palifera . However, antibiotic treatment and inoculation tests did not support Endozoicomonas having a direct contribution to thermal resistance. This study highlights that, besides its association with a thermally tolerable algal symbiont, a high level of constitutive antioxidant enzymes in the coral host is crucial for coral survivorship in the more fluctuating and higher temperature environments.

Symbiotic bacterial communities and carbon metabolic profiles of Acropora coral with varying health status under thermal stress

Abstract:Thermal-induced coral bleaching has received substantial research attention; however, the dynamics of symbiotic coral-associated bacterial communities are underexplored and the roles of coral with intermediate health status remain unclear. Using high-throughput sequencing and biochemical analyses, we found that the symbiotic zooxanthellae number gradually decreased with the increase of bleaching degree (non-bleached, semi-bleached, and fully-bleached) in the coral Acropora pruinosa. The semi-bleached host exhibited a relatively more complex microbial interaction network. For the carbon metabolic profiles, relatively higher carbon-fixing abilities observed in non-bleached coral symbiotic bacteria, followed by semi-bleached host, and lowest values appeared in fully-bleached coral. Partial least-squares pathway modeling revealed that bacterial community features and carbon metabolic function were directly related with health status, while temperature exerted a strong influence on the bleaching resilience. These findings can help us better understand the coral microecological feature and carbon metabolic potential under changing environment.
Coral species-specific loss and physiological legacy effects are elicited by an extended marine heatwave

Abstract:Marine heatwaves are increasing in frequency and intensity, with potentially catastrophic consequences for marine ecosystems such as coral reefs. An extended heatwave and recovery time-series that incorporates multiple stressors and is environmentally realistic can provide enhanced predictive capacity for performance under climate change conditions. We exposed common reef-building corals in Hawai'i, Montipora capitata and Pocillopora acuta, to a 2-month period of high temperature and high PCO2 conditions or ambient conditions in a factorial design, followed by 2 months of ambient conditions. High temperature, rather than high PCO2, drove multivariate physiology shifts through time in both species, including decreases in respiration rates and endosymbiont densities. Pocillopora acuta exhibited more significantly negatively altered physiology, and substantially higher bleaching and mortality than M. capitata. The sensitivity of P. acuta appears to be driven by higher baseline rates of photosynthesis paired with lower host antioxidant capacity, creating an increased sensitivity to oxidative stress. Thermal tolerance of M. capitata may be partly due to harboring a mixture of Cladocopium and Durusdinium spp., whereas P. acuta was dominated by other distinct Cladocopium spp. Only M. capitata survived the experiment, but physiological state in heatwave-exposed M. capitata remained significantly diverged at the end of recovery relative to individuals that experienced ambient conditions. In future climate scenarios, particularly marine heatwaves, our results indicate a species-specific loss of corals that is driven by baseline host and symbiont physiological differences as well as Symbiodiniaceae community compositions, with the surviving species experiencing physiological legacies that are likely to influence future stress responses.

Abstract:Shallow water tropical reefs are widely threatened by anthropogenic ocean warming which sometimes exceeds their thermal tolerance limit. The majority of reefs have been currently predicted to entirely disappear if CO<sub>2</sub> emissions continue at the present rate. However, certain species are thermally resilient and can quickly adapt to anomalous thermal stress events by altering the expression of heat stress-related genes, known as gene expression plasticity. Here, we examined the expression of key genes (i.e., heat-shock proteins, oxidative stress, immune response, ion transport, apoptosis, anti-apoptosis) in the scleractinian submassive coral <i>Porites harrisoni</i> and cytochrome P450 gene of its algal symbionts collected from the northeastern Persian Gulf during warm (August) and cold (December) periods. The potential for recovery from severe heat stress in August was additionally examined through transplantation of partially bleached coral fragments from shallow (~ 2.5 m) to a deeper site (~ 9 m), close to colonies of the same species experiencing much less heat stress. To evaluate the acclimation capability, several healthy deep (~ 9 m) coral fragments were transplanted to the shallow (~ 2.5 m) site experiencing severe heat stress. A significant upregulation of heat-shock proteins in response to heat stress was found and identified as the primary defense mechanism against heat stress-induced bleaching. In conjunction with the apoptotic gene downregulation, the immune response gene in acclimation samples showed pronounced upregulation, indicating high compatibility of deep corals to thermal changes. In recovery samples, the expression of the studied genes was similar to the expression of samples that underwent much less heat stress, which implies they were fully recovered. The expression of the cytochrome P450 gene showed no significant changes in all experiments.

Abstract:1The incidence is generally highest during the first 5 years of life and decreases with age. The incidence rates of the most common childhood cancers have remained stable during the past 2 decades (Figure 1). The rate of death from childhood cancer has decreased substantially but is still about 135 deaths each year (24.6 per million in 2004). 1 Survivors of childhood cancer are at substantial risk for health problems, including late sequelae of cancer treatment and chronic psychological and cognitive impairments. The latter can hinder both their psychosocial adjustment after treatment and their health and well-being over the long term. Little is known about the cause of childhood cancers. Only a small proportion (probably less than 5%) occur in children who have constitutional genetic abnormalities and diseases such as Down syndrome, AIDS, neurofibromatosis and nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome. Another small proportion is caused by exposure to chemotherapeutic agents or radiotherapy for a prior malignant disease. 2 Opportunities to prevent cancer in children are therefore limited. This is especially so because screening tests are lacking for most childhood cancers. Diagnosis The International Classification of Childhood Cancers 3 was developed to reflect the differences in childhood cancers compared with cancers in adults in terms of histology, site of origin and tumour behaviour. It classifies childhood cancers under 12 diagnostic groups, with additional subgroups for further refinement. Compared with adults, children have a higher proportion of blood and lymphatic cancers, most commonly leukemia, and cancers of the central nervous system. 1 Cancer is slightly more common in boys than in girls, and the type of cancer diagnosed is likely to vary by age. 1
Species-Specific Variations in the Metabolomic Profiles of Acropora hyacinthus and Acropora millepora Mask Acute Temperature Stress Effects in Adult Coral Colonies

Abstract:Coral reefs are suffering unprecedented declines in health state on a global scale. Some have suggested that human assisted evolution or assisted gene flow may now be necessary to effectively restore reefs and pre-condition them for future climate change. An understanding of the key metabolic processes in corals, including under stressed conditions, would greatly facilitate the effective application of such interventions. To date, however, there has been little research on corals at this level, particularly regarding studies of the metabolome of Scleractinian corals. Here, the metabolomic profiles [measured using 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 1 H NMR) and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS)] of two dominant reef building corals, Acropora hyacinthus and A. millepora , from two distinct geographical locations (Australia and Singapore) were characterized. We assessed how an acute temperature stress (an increase of 3.25°C ± 0.28 from ambient control levels over 8 days), shifted the corals’ baseline metabolomic profiles. Regardless of the profiling method utilized, metabolomic signatures of coral colonies were significantly distinct between coral species, a result supporting previous work. However, this strong species-specific metabolomic signature appeared to mask any changes resulting from the acute heat stress. On closer examination, we were able to discriminate between control and temperature stressed groups using a partial least squares discriminant analysis classification model (PLSDA). However, in all cases “late” components needed to be selected (i.e., 7 and 8 instead of 1 and 2), suggesting any treatment effect was small, relative to other sources of variation. This highlights the importance of pre-characterizing the coral colony metabolomes, and of factoring that knowledge into any experimental design that seeks to understand the apparently subtle metabolic effects of acute heat stress on adult corals. Further research is therefore needed to decouple these apparent individual and species-level metabolomic responses to climate change in corals.

Marine heatwaves modulate the genotypic and physiological responses of reef-building corals to subsequent heat stress

Abstract:Back-to-back marine heatwaves in 2016 and 2017 resulted in severe coral bleaching and mortality across the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Encouragingly, some corals that survived these events exhibit increased bleaching resistance and may represent thermally tolerant populations that can better cope with ocean warming. Using the GBR as a natural laboratory, we investigated whether a history of minimal (Heron Island) or severe (Lizard Island) coral bleaching in 2016 and 2017 equates to stress tolerance in a successive heatwave (2020). We examined the genetic diversity, physiological performance, and trophic plasticity of juvenile (<10 cm) and adult (>25 cm) corals of two common genera (Pocillopora and Stylophora). Despite enduring greater cumulative heat stress (6.3°C week-1 vs. 5.6°C week-1), corals that experienced the third marine heatwave in 5 years (Lizard) exhibited twice as high survival and visual bleaching thresholds compared to corals that had not experienced significant bleaching in >10 years (Heron). Surprisingly, only one shared host-Symbiodiniaceae association was uncovered between locations (Stylophora pistillata-Cladocopium "C8 group") and there was no genetic overlap in Pocillopora-Cladocopium partnerships, suggesting turnover in species composition from recent marine heatwaves. Corals within the species complex Pocillopora that survived the 2016 and 2017 marine heatwaves at Lizard Island were the most resilient, exhibiting three times greater calcification rates than conspecifics at Heron Island. Further, surviving corals (Lizard) had distinct isotopic niches, lower host carbon, and greater host protein, while conspecifics that had not experienced recent bleaching (Heron) had two times greater symbiont carbon content, suggesting divergent trophic strategies that influenced survival (i.e., greater reliance on heterotrophy vs. symbiont autotrophy, respectively). Ultimately, while corals may experience less bleaching and survive repeated thermal stress events, species-specific trade-offs do occur, leaving open many questions related to the long-term health and recovery of coral reef ecosystems in the face of intensifying marine heatwaves.
Single-Cell Biomolecular Analysis of Coral Algal Symbionts Reveals Opposing Metabolic Responses to Heat Stress and Expulsion

Abstract:The success of corals in nutrient poor environments is largely attributed to the symbiosis between the cnidarian host and its intracellular alga. Warm water anomalies have been shown to destabilize this symbiosis, yet detailed analysis of the effect of temperature and expulsion on cell-specific carbon and nutrient allocation in the symbiont is limited. Here, we exposed colonies of the hard coral Acropora millepora to heat stress and using synchrotron-based infrared microspectroscopy measured the biomolecular profiles of individual in hospite and expelled symbiont cells at an acute state of bleaching. Our results showed symbiont metabolic profiles to be remarkably distinct with heat stress and expulsion, where the two effectors elicited opposing metabolic adjustments independent of treatment or cell type. Elevated temperature resulted in biomolecular changes reflecting cellular stress, with relative increases in free amino acids and phosphorylation of molecules and a concomitant decline in protein content, suggesting protein modification and degradation. This contrasted with the metabolic profiles of expelled symbionts, which showed relative decreases in free amino acids and phosphorylated molecules, but increases in proteins and lipids, suggesting expulsion lessens the overall effect of heat stress on the metabolic signature of the algal symbionts. Interestingly, the combined effects of expulsion and thermal stress were additive, reducing the overall shifts in all biomolecules, with the notable exception of the significant accumulation of lipids and saturated fatty acids. This first use of a single-cell metabolomics approach on the coral symbiosis provides novel insight into coral bleaching and emphasizes the importance of a single-cell approach to demark the cell-to-cell variability in the physiology of coral cellular populations.

Abstract:Coral reef health is tightly connected to the coral holobiont, which is the association between the coral animal and a diverse microbiome functioning as a unit. The coral holobiont depends on key services such as nitrogen and sulfur cycling mediated by the associated bacteria. However, these microbial services may be impaired in response to environmental changes, such as thermal stress. A perturbed microbiome may lead to coral bleaching and disease outbreaks, which have caused an unprecedented loss in coral cover worldwide, particularly correlated to a warming ocean. The response mechanisms of the coral holobiont under high temperatures are not completely understood, but the associated microbial community is a potential source of acquired heat-tolerance. Here we investigate the effects of increased temperature on the taxonomic and functional profiles of coral surface mucous layer (SML) microbiomes in relationship to coral-algal physiology. We used shotgun metagenomics in an experimental setting to understand the dynamics of microbial taxa and genes in the SML microbiome of the coral Pseudodiploria strigosa under heat treatment. The metagenomes of corals exposed to heat showed high similarity at the level of bacterial genera and functional genes related to nitrogen and sulfur metabolism and stress response. The coral SML microbiome responded to heat with an increase in the relative abundance of taxa with probiotic potential, and functional genes for nitrogen and sulfur acquisition. Coral-algal physiology significantly explained the variation in the microbiome at taxonomic and functional levels. These consistent and specific microbial taxa and gene functions that significantly increased in proportional abundance in corals exposed to heat are potentially beneficial to coral health and thermal resistance.

Abstract:Relatively high-latitude coral reefs could be potential "refuges" for corals under climate change. One of the most important aspects limiting their availability as refuges is low-temperature stress. However, the mechanisms underlying the response of coral holobionts to low-temperature stress is unclear. In this study, we aimed to explore the underlying mechanisms by recording the maximum quantum yields of photosystem II ( Fv/Fm ) and transcriptome responses of Porites lutea under acute (1–2 weeks) and chronic (6–12 weeks) low-temperature stress at 20°C and 14°C. The P. lutea samples were collected from a relatively high-latitude coral reef in the South China Sea (109°00′–109°15′E and 21°00′–21°10′ N). The study suggested that: (1) Under acute low-temperature stress, the Fv/Fm of Symbiodiniaceae dropped by 64%, which was significantly higher than the 49% observed under chronic stress. Low-temperature stress inhibited photosystem II(PSII) functioning, with greater inhibition under acute stress. (2) Downregulation of sugar metabolism-related genes under low-temperature stress implied that the decrease in energy was due to obstruction of PSII. (3) Under low-temperature stress, calcification-related genes were downregulated in coral hosts, possibly because of energy deprivation caused by inhibited photosynthesis, Symbiodiniaceae expulsion, and oxidative phosphorylation uncoupling in mitochondria. (4) Acute low-temperature stress induced the upregulation of genes related to the TNF signaling pathway and endoplasmic reticulum stress, promoting apoptosis and coral bleaching. However, these phenomena were not observed during chronic stress, suggesting acclimation to chronic low-temperature stress and a greater survival pressure of acute low-temperature stress on coral holobionts. In conclusion, low-temperature stress inhibits Symbiodiniaceae PSII functioning, reducing energy production and affecting calcification in coral holobionts. Acute low-temperature stress is more threatening to coral holobionts than chronic stress.
