Abstract:Biochar as an environmentally friendly soil amendment, has attracted widespread attention and in combination with other amendments is considered to be more conducive to crop growth, soil fertility, and crop safety production. However, a comprehensive understanding of the differences among different biochars, biochar with inorganic amendment, and biochar with organic amendment with respect to soil health, plant growth, and Cd bioavailability or phytoavailability is necessary. Therefore, a sixty-day pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of five biochars derived from rice husk (RH), pig manure (PM), sewage sludge (SS), corn straw (CS), and wood chip (WC) and their respective combination with lime or compost on cadmium (Cd) immobilization and adsorption as well as physicochemical features and enzyme activities in contaminated soil. The results revealed that the sole application of PM, SS, and CS biochars had a positive impact on lettuce growth and photosynthetic pigments. In addition, mixing PM or SS biochar with compost further promoted lettuce growth due to higher soil fertility and enzyme activities. However, as compared to unamended soil, CS biochar-compost combination, RH, PM, SS, and CS biochar-lime combination highly reduced lettuce plant height and fresh weight. Furthermore, the application of amendments with biochar-lime mixtures greatly reduced Cd bioavailability. X-ray diffraction analysis and Fourier Transform Infrared spectra revealed that Cd immobilization mainly involved complexation and co-precipitation on mineral surfaces as well as hydroxyl or carboxyl functional groups in amendments. In comparison to a single application and biochar-lime combination, the biochar-compost combinations i.e RH, PM, SS, and WC were more effective in lowering Cd translocation and bioaccumulation in lettuce.
Effect of Biochar and Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans on Heavy Metal Content in Soil and Lettuce

Abstract:The mechanism of biochar remediation of heavy metal contamination in soils has been studied quite a lot, but there are still many uncertainties about the effect of interaction between biochar and functional bacteria that adsorb and leach heavy metals. In this paper, we conducted a pot experiment to investigate in depth the effects of biochar, Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans , and their combined treatment on heavy metal contents (Cr, As, Cd, and Pb) in soil and lettuce by using biochar and A. ferrooxidans . The results showed that biochar, A. ferrooxidans , and combined treatment increased soil pH by 42.55 ~ 51.06% and decreased the content of heavy metals in soil (0.07 ~ 60.80%). The average decrease was as follows: combined treatment (28.42%) > biochar (22.35%) > A. ferrooxidans (18.94%). All three treatments reduced the content of heavy metals in lettuce (26.19–84.42%), and the average size was combined treatment (60.82%) > biochar (52.55%) > A. ferrooxidans (44.00%). Biochar and A. ferrooxidans inhibited the enrichment of heavy metals in lettuce and promoted the growth of lettuce and the increase of nutrients. The combination of biochar and A. ferrooxidans can effectively control soil heavy metal pollution. The combined treatment can reduce the heavy metal content of lettuce and promote its growth, which is an excellent material for soil heavy metal deterrent control and has distinguished application prospects.

Reduced cadmium(Cd) accumulation in lettuce plants by applying KMnO4 modified water hyacinth biochar

Abstract:In this study, water hyacinth was adopted to prepare biochar followed by modification using KMnO4. And the modified biochars were applied in Cd contaminated soil, exploring the effects of water hyacinth biochar on lettuce growth, Cd enrichment, soil enzyme activities and microbial changes by pot experiments. Modified biochar application significantly reduced the Cd accumulation in lettuce shoots and roots. Compared to the control, the application of water hyacinth biochar at 1% rate resulted in significant reduction of Cd contents by 40.7% and 33.7% in the shoots and roots of lettuce. Also, the reduction was 33.3% and 20.8% compared with the application rate of unmodified biochar. With the increase of biochar application, the amount of Cd was absorbed by lettuce shoots and roots showing significant reduction of plant Cd accumulation in response to the biochar application rate. Additionally, the lowest available Cd concentration in soil (1.34 mg kg-1) was obtained with the application of modified biochar at 1% rate, which might be the main reason for the lower Cd concentration in lettuce shoot and root parts. Furthermore, structural analysis showed that Cd was fixed on the modified biochar, in a passivated state, by larger specific surface area, more active sites and more stable covalent binding complexes leading to a strong decrease of the available Cd in the soil. Moreover, it was concluded that the increment of the enzyme activities in the soil was up to 2.51 times significantly following the application of modified water hyacinth biochar with 3% amount. Lastly, 16sRNA sequencing showed that biochar addition may lead to changes of microbial structure and abundance in soil.
Rhizospheric pore-water content predicts the biochar-attenuated accumulation, translocation, and toxicity of cadmium to lettuce

Abstract:Metal bioavailability controls its behaviors in soil-plant system, especially involved in biochar amendment. This study compared a rhizospheric pore-water extraction against a BCR sequential extraction method to understand cadmium (Cd) bioavailability in two typical Chinese soils. Soils were spiked with five levels of Cd (CdCl2) and remediated with 3% corn-straw derived biochar. After 60 days of lettuce growth, Cd accumulation and enzyme activities in tissues were analyzed. Results showed that biochar increased soil properties (pH, CEC and SOM) compared to un-amended soils, but decreased contents of bioavailable Cd in soil pore-water (Cdpore-water) and BCR extracted Cd (CdFi+Fii). Contents of Cdpore-water were lower in yellow-brown soils than that in red soils. Pearson analysis showed that bioavailable Cd is negatively correlated with soil pH and CEC (p < 0.05). Cd accumulation in lettuce roots and leaves both were decreased by biochar addition, and the established linear equations proved that soil Cdpore-water is the best predictor for Cd accumulation in lettuce roots (r2 = 0.964) and in leaves (r2 = 0.953), followed by CdFi+Fii. Transfer factor (TF) values of Cd from roots to leaves were lower than 1, and slightly better correlated with soil Cdpore-water (r = -0.674, p < 0.01) than CdFi+Fii (r = -0.615, p < 0.01). Aggregated boosted tree (ABT) analyses indicated that soil properties together with Cdpore-water contribute more than 50% to root enzyme activities. Collectively, soil Cdpore-water is a promising predictor of Cd bioavailability, accumulation and toxicity in soil-plant system with biochar addition.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution in agricultural soil is a global issue that seriously threatens agricultural production and human health. Biochar has attracted significant attention as an efficient and environmentally friendly material for remediating heavy metal pollution in soil. In this study, biochar (BC) was prepared from tobacco straw and then modified with polyethyleneimine (PEI) using a mixed co-impregnation method to create polyethyleneimine-modified biochar (PBC). The structure and surface properties of BC and PBC were analyzed, and their effects on the physiological characteristics of Chinese cabbage, as well as the accumulation of cadmium and copper in Cd and Cu-contaminated soil, were studied. The results indicated an increase in the pore volume and pore size of the modified BC, with successful impregnation of PEI on the BC surface. The introduction of functional groups, such as amine groups, enhanced the adsorption of biochar. After 70 days of cultivating young plants, the growth status of Chinese cabbage and the soil's physical and chemical properties were determined. Compared with the control ( CK), when the addition amount of PBC was 3%, the data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA. The indicators with significant changes were as follows: the content of available Cd and Cu in soil decreased by 54.68% and 43.76%, respectively. The plant height and root length of Chinese cabbage increased by 3.1 cm and 3.5 cm, respectively. The fresh and dry weights of leaves increased by 138.07% and 98.3%, respectively. The fresh and dry weights of the roots increased by 107.3% and 140.5%, respectively. The chlorophyll content of the leaves increased by 57.68%. The absorption and accumulation of Cd in roots and leaves decreased by 48.80% and 55.88%, respectively. The absorption and enrichment of Cu in roots and leaves decreased by 33.04% and 43.41%, respectively. The enrichment coefficients of Cd and Cu in Chinese cabbage leaves decreased by 47.45% and 40.92%, respectively, and in roots by 48.80% and 33.04%. In summary, PBC serves as an effective soil heavy metal stabilizer, significantly enhancing the physiological and biochemical indexes of crops in contaminated soil and reducing heavy metal accumulation in crops. This provides a scientific basis and technical support for researching and developing efficient soil heavy metal stabilization materials.

Abstract:Soil acidification has become a major environmental and economic concern worldwide. Char materials (e.g biochar, hydrochar) have attracted considerable attention as soil amendments to restore degraded soil. However, the comparative study of biochar and hydrochar on plant growth in acidified soil is limited. In this study, a microcosmic experiment was used to compare the effect of biochar and hydrochar from cow manure (CBC, CHC) and reed straw (RBC, RHC) on the growth of lettuce in the acidified soil. CBC and RHC significantly increased and decreased the biomass of lettuce by 18.7% and 32.5% in the acidified soil, respectively. The increase of the lettuce growth by CBC primarily attributed to the enhancement of soil properties (SOM and pH) and soil nutrient content (Olsen-P, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Fe and Mn). Moreover, CBC enhanced the microbial activity and complexity and increased the abundance of beneficial genera like Gemmatimonas, Ramlibacter and Haliangium, which improved soil health and might indirectly benefited the lettuce growth. Our findings highlighted the priority of char materials feedstock and preparation technology for remediating the acidified soil.

Abstract:Biochar is an environment-friendly immobilizing agent and performs better in remediating soil cadmium (Cd) along with compost. However, little attention has been paid to the effects of the intrinsic properties of biochar in combination with compost on the phytoavailability and translocation of legacy Cd (Cd L ) and newly introduced Cd (Cd N ) in the soil-lettuce-human system. Therefore, in this study, four biochars originated from pig manure, sewage sludge, wood chip, and rice husk were produced into mm/μm/nm-particles, which was combined with compost respectively. The impact of the different particle-size biochar compost blends (BCCM) on the translocation, bioaccessibility and bioavailability of Cd L and Cd N was investigated through applying enriched isotope tracing and Caco-2 cell model. The results showed that the lowest labile Cd L/N (ECd L/N ) values were found in nm-BCCM by converting exchangeable Cd into other unusable Cd forms. nm-BCCM has a significant reduction in Cd L/N uptake, accumulation, and translocation by lettuce a s nm-BCCM increased the cell wall percentages and decreased the solution components of Cd L/N in the root. Despite almost immobilizing agents did not decrease the bioaccessibility and bioavailability of Cd L/N , the lower bioaccessible and bioavailable Cd L/N contents imply nm-BCCM can guarantee the public was minimally exposed to the risk of Cd. These results suggested that combining nm-biochar and compost had greater potential to reduce Cd L and Cd N translocation and absorption in complex environmental systems.

The Effects of Biochar Aging on Rhizosphere Microbial Communities in Cadmium-Contaminated Acid Soil.

Abstract:Biochars are widely used in the remediation of Cd-contaminated soils. However, changes in the bacterial communities in the rhizosphere contaminated with Cd in response to biochar aging are poorly studied. Addressing this gap in knowledge is important to improving micro-ecological services on healthy growth of plants with mitigation strategies against Cd contamination. An aging experiment (270 days) was conducted with biochars derived from poultry litter and sugar-gum wood added to a Cd-contaminated acid soil. Bacterial communities in the rhizosphere of Brassica rapa and bulk soils were investigated after 1, 90 and 270 days of biochar aging. There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) in bacterial Shannon and Simpson indices between the control and biochar treatments. However, compared to the no-Cd control, the addition of Cd decreased the relative abundances of Firmicutes, Chloroflexi and Acidobacteriota but increased those of Actinobacteriota and Proteobacteria. Poultry-litter biochar had the largest effect on bacterial community composition, especially in the rhizosphere. Aging of poultry-litter biochar increased the abundance of Armatimonadota over time more than the sugar-gum-wood biochar, which was attributed to a lower pH and higher bioavailability of Cd in the sugar-gum-wood biochar treatment. The addition of poultry-litter biochar to the contaminated soil mitigated the bioaccumulation of Cd by increasing soil pH and restoring soil bacterial ecology in contaminated acid soils over time.

Abstract:Heavy metal-antibiotic complex contamination in soil has raised much attention. Biochar is a common soil conditioner and pollutant barrier agent. However, there has rare research about biochar control effectiveness on heavy metals and antibiotics in plant-soil system. This work evaluated the impact of applying unmodified biochar (M) and H 3 PO 4 -modified biochar (PM) on Cd, OTC, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) distribution in pakchoi ( Brassica chinensis L.) and soil by pot experiment. Biochar can improve quality, antioxidative defense responses of plant and enzymes activity, physiochemical properties, microbial community of soil. The content of OTC, Cd, and ARGs in pakchoi were significantly reduced after applying biochar. There was a 73.08–78.48 % decrease rate in relative abundance of ARGs, a 58.96 %–59.66 % decrease rate in OTC content, and a 71.65 %–79.64 % decrease rate in available Cd content when biochar had been added to soil with OTC and Cd contaminations. The addition of 1.5 % biochar converted exchangeable Cd to residual fraction. Furthermore, applying PM biochar led to a greater reduction in Cd mobility and OTC in soil and their accumulation in pakchoi compared to M biochar. The biochar also mitigated the OTC and Cd phytotoxicity and improved plant quality and soil enzymes activity. Biochar could reduce Proteobacteria , Actinobacteria , Planctomycetes , Gemmatimonadetes , and Firmicutes abundancies. Soil organic matter accounted for the greatest proportion of variation in ARGs. Overall, the use of biochar, particularly PM biochar, was a promising approach for remediating soil contaminated with multiple pollutants.

Abstract:Abstract The current study investigated the effect of biochars derived from cinnamomum woodchip, garden waste and mulberry woodchip on soil phytoavailable lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) pools, and their uptake by Chinese cabbage ( Brassica chinensis L.). The biochars were produced at 450 °C of pyrolysis temperature. The contaminated soils were collected from Yunfu (classified as Udept), Jiyuan (Ustalf) and Shaoguan (Udult) cities in China at the depth of 0–20 cm and amended with biochars at the rate of 3% w/w. After mixing the soil with biochar for 14 days, the Chinese cabbage was planted in the amended soils. Then, it was harvested on the 48th day after sowing period. In Udult soil, Chinese cabbage died 18 days after sowing period in control and soils amended with cinnamomum and mulberry biochars. Although only plants grown with the garden waste biochar treatment survived in Udult soil, amendment of garden waste or mulberry biochars at 3% w/w (450 °C) to Udult soil significantly increased (4.95–6.25) soil pH compared to other biochar treatments. In Udept and Ustalf soils, the application of garden waste and mulberry biochars significantly improved plant biomass compared to control, albeit it was dependent on both biochar and soil properties. Garden waste biochar significantly decreased soil Cd phytoavailable concentration by 26% in the Udult soil, while a decrease of soil Cd phytoavailable concentration by 16% and 9% was observed in Ustalf and Udept soils, respectively. The available phosphorus in biochar and soil pH were important factors controlling toxic metal phytouptake by the plant. Thus, the amendment of soil with biochar at 3% can effectively reduce the mobility of Cd and Pb in soil and plant uptake. However, biochar and soil properties should be well-known before being used for soil toxic metal immobilization.

Abstract:The focus was to assess the effects of biochar on Cd uptake by various vegetables and its downward movement in saline-alkali soil and carried out in polluted pots experiment. The results showed that the biomass of vegetables increased significantly by 16.9% to 519.9% while the Cd concentration in green pepper and eggplant fruits was decreased by 6.8% to 11.5% and 15.1% to 15.4% with the biochar application. The Cd in contaminated soil profile was transferred from topsoil (0-6 cm) to subsoil (6-12 cm) that was observed as 14.30 ± 4.17 mg kg-1. The concentrations of Cd in soil with different fractions like exchangeable, reducible and oxidizable and the Cd uptake by vegetables were reduced. The release of residual Cd was decreased by 0.3 to 20.1% over time with biochar application (0-12 cm). The biochar was effective in mitigating the soil Cd pollution by preventing the vertical Cd leaching.

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) pollution in farmland soils is a serious concern due to its devastating effects on living organisms. This requires developing effective strategies to inhibit the Cd absorption and accumulation by vegetables. In this study, the influence of soil applied biochar (BC) (10 and 30 g kg−1) and foliage applied selenium (Se) fertilizer (1 and 3 mg L−1) on the absorption and accumulation of Cd and growth of lettuce under Cd stress (1 and 3 mg/kg) was evaluated. In Cd-contaminated soil, the application of BC and Se significantly increased lettuce biomass and chlorophyll contents by 74% and 100%, respectively, compared to control in lettuce. The combined application of BC and Se at (B 30 g kg−1, Se 3 mg L−1) was effective in reducing the accumulation of Cd by lettuce shoot by 73.41% than control. Co-application of BC and Se enhanced the activities of antioxidant enzymes catalase, superoxide dismutase by 77 and 96%, respectively, and reduced the malondialdehyde contents by 56% than control. Application of biochar (30 g kg−1) significantly increased the soil electrical conductivity and soil organic carbon of soil by 48 and 41%, respectively as compared to control. The combination of BC and Se (B 30 g kg−1, Se 3 mg L−1) reduced the Cd contents in lettuce shoots from 0.79 mg kg−1 to 0.08 mg kg−1 below the national food safety standard threshold (0.2 mg kg−1 Cd). Overall, this study revealed that the integrated application of BC (30 g kg−1) and Se (3 mg L−1) can help prevent the absorption of Cd by lettuce. However, the effectiveness of BC in remediating trace metals may decrease with time due to the aging factor and leaching alkalinity of BC, so long-term field experiments are needed to enhance the understanding of BC efficiency and an appropriate Se concentration for specific green soil remediation goals.

Abstract:Biochar has become eco-friendly amendment used for phytoavoidation with low cadmium (Cd) accumulating cultivars of crops to ensure food safety in Cd contaminated soils. In this study, biochar with different waste feedstock material were evaluated for their effectiveness on essential trace metals mobility, Cd bioavailability and its accumulation in two contrasting Cd accumulating cultivars of pak choi (Brassica rapa ssp. chinensis L.) grown in Cd contaminated Mollisol soil. A greenhouse experiment was conducted with plants grown in Cd contaminated soil that had been amended with biochar derived from barley straw, tomato green waste, chicken manure, duck manure and swine manure at application rate of 0%, 2.5% and 5.0% (w/w). The results showed that soil pH was significantly increased by all treatments. Biochar increased plant dry biomass, micronutrients bioavailability with significant differences in the Cd sorption capacity, with the effectiveness higher with increasing biochar application rate. However, tomato green waste (TGW) and chicken manure (CM) derived biochar were more effective than the other biochar in reducing Cd mobilization in soil by 35–54% and 26–43% and reduced its accumulation in shoots of pak choi cultivars by 34–76% and 33–72% in low Cd accumulator cultivar and 64–85% and 55–80% in high Cd accumulator cultivar than the control. Overall, results indicate that TGW and CM biochar can efficiently immobilize Cd, thereby reducing bioavailability in Cd contaminated Mollisol soil to ensure food safety.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Different ways of benefiting from plant wastes in agricultural production are developed. One of the methods is to convert wastes into biochar and use it as a soil regulator. This study was conducted to determine the effects of biochar produced from tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) plant waste on soil fertility and nutritional status of the lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) plant. For this purpose, the combined effect of five different doses of biochar (0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 t ha-1) and three chemical fertilizers (control, half-dose NPK and full-dose NPK) were investigated. The research was conducted in two cultivation periods. Biochar was applied to the soil just in the first period. In the first period, applications increased electrical conductivity, organic matter content, total N, and concentration of available P, Zn, and Mn, and the exchangeable K and Mg in the soil. Biochar and chemical fertilizer applications positively affected the lettuce plant’s N, P, and K concentrations. In the second period, concentrations of the available P, Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu and exchangeable Ca, Mg in soil, as well as the N, P, Ca, Mg, Zn, and Cu concentrations of the plant are higher compared to the first period. It was determined that biochar application alone was not sufficient for the nutrition of the lettuce plant, chemical fertilizers should be used additionally. In lettuce cultivation, half-dose NPK was recommended in addition to 30 t ha-1 biochar. As a result, it was determined that biochar produced from tomato plant waste was an effective soil improver material and might be an alternative source of K.

The Effects of Biochar Pyrolyzed at Varying Temperatures and Different Water Types on the Properties of Lettuce and Soil

Abstract:Although irrigation with recycled wastewater (RWW) is a remarkable approach in terms of ensuring the sustainability of fresh water (FW), heavy metals (HM) contained in RWW cause soil pollution and accumulation in the plant. Biochar can reduce these risks that regulate the mobility of HM in the soil and bioavailability in the plant, but this may differ depending on the varying pyrolysis temperatures of the biochar. In this study, the HM pollution of the soil and mineral content and physiological properties of the lettuce were investigated in irrigation with different water types of lettuce grown in soil applied with biochar pyrolyzed at varying temperature. The results showed that due to differing characteristics of biochars pyrolyzed at varying temperatures, biochars pyrolyzed at high temperatures increased EC and pH of the soil, P, and electrolyte leakage contents of lettuce compared to biochars pyrolyzed at low temperatures but decreased organic matter; TN; exchangeable cation; and Fe, Cu, Mn, and Zn contents of the soil and chlorophyll, leaf relative water, stomatal conductance and mineral contents, and plant weight of lettuce, while biochar excluded Na and Zn uptake of lettuce. Contamination factor, enrichment factor, and pollution load index revealed that especially Ni and partially Mn and Cu may pose a risk in terms of HM pollution and that irrigation with RWW and biochars pyrolyzed at low temperatures may increase the HM pollution size. It has been found that FW+RWW can be used safely in irrigation to improve the mineral content and yield of lettuce, and it can be suggested that biochars pyrolyzed at high temperatures (> 400 °C) should be used to reduce pollution of HM.

Abstract:Polyvinyl chloride microplastics (PVC-MPs) are toxic to crops, resulting in economic losses during agricultural production. Owing to its strong adsorption capacity, biochar can effectively remove MPs from water. It is presumed that biochar can alleviate the phytotoxicity of PVC-MPs. To verify this hypothesis, the effects of different concentrations of corncob biochar (CCBC) on the phytotoxicity of PVC-MPs were investigated using hydroponic experiments. The results showed that PVC-MPs attached to lettuce roots substantially inhibited the growth and quality of lettuce. The tested CCBC adsorbed the PVC-MPs. At appropriate concentrations, CCBC alleviated the inhibitory effect of PVC-MPs on lettuce yield; however, it decreased some quality indicators. The single PVC-MPs induced oxidative damage to lettuce, as demonstrated by the increased hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA) content. Addition of CCBC considerably decreased the contents of H2O2 and MDA in the lettuce shoots but increased the H2O2 content in the roots. These findings indicate that CCBC may alleviate the adverse effects caused by PVC-MPs to the lettuce shoots but aggravate the toxic effects on the lettuce roots. This study provides a basis for understanding the removal of the phytotoxicity of MPs.

Abstract:The remediation of agricultural soil contaminated by antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) is of great significance for protecting food safety and human health. Reducing the availability of copper in soil may control coresistance to ARGs. However, the feasibility of applying nano-biochar and Bacillus cereus to mitigate the spread of ARGs in Cu contaminated soil remains unclear. Therefore, this study investigated the use of biochar with different particle sizes (2 % apple branch biochar and 0.5 % nano-biochar) and 3 g m-2B. cereus in a 60-day pot experiment with growing lettuce. The effects of single and combined application on the abundances of ARGs in Cu-contaminated soil (Cu = 200 mg kg-1) were compared, and the related mechanisms were explored. Studies have shown that the addition of biochar alone is detrimental to mitigating ARGs in soil-lettuce systems. The combined application of 3 g m-2B. cereus and 0.5 % nano-biochar effectively inhibited the proliferation of ARGs in Cu-contaminated soil, and 3 g m-2B. cereus effectively inhibited the proliferation of ARGs in lettuce. Partial least squares-path modeling and network analysis showed that bacterial communities and mobile genetic elements were the key factors that affected the abundances of ARGs in rhizosphere soil, and Cu resistance genes and bioavailable copper (acid extractable state Cu (F1) + reducing state Cu (F2)) had less direct impacts. The bacterial community was the key factor that affected the abundances of ARGs in lettuce. Rhodobacter (Proteobacteria), Corynebacterium (Actinobacteria), and Methylobacterium (Proteobacteria) may have been hosts of ARGs in lettuce plants. B. cereus and nano-biochar affected the abundances of ARGs by improving the soil properties and reducing the soil bioavailability of Cu, as well as directly or indirectly changing the bacterial community composition in soil and lettuce, thereby impeding the transport of ARGs to aboveground plant parts.

Abstract:The alginate-biochar formulation for metal removal from aquatic environments has been widely tried but its use for lowering phytoavailability of metals in the soil-crop continuum is limited. Biochar has been increasingly used as a soil amendment due to its potential for soil carbon sequestration and sorption capacity. Handling of powdery biochar as a soil top-dressing material is, however, cumbersome and vulnerable to loss by water and wind. In this experiment, biochar powder, which was pyrolyzed from oak trees, was encapsulated into beads with alginate, which is a naturally occurring polysaccharide found in brown algae. Both batch and pot experiments were conducted to examine the effects of the alginate-encapsulated biochar beads (BB), as compared to its original biochar powdery form (BP), on the Pb adsorption capacity and phytoavailability of soil Pb to lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.). The BB treatment improved reactivity about six times due to a higher surface area (287 m2 g−1) and five times due to a higher cation exchange capacity (50 cmolc kg−1) as compared to the BP treatment. The maximum sorption capacity of Pb was increased to 152 from 81 mg g−1 because of surface chemosorption. Adsorption of Pb onto BB followed multiple first-order kinetics and comprised fast and slow steps. More than 60% of the Pb was adsorbed in the fast step, i.e., within 3 h. Also, the BB treatment, up to the 5% level (w/w), increased soil pH from 5.4 to 6.5 and lowered the phytoavailable fraction of Pb in soil from 5.7 to 0.3 mg kg−1. The Pb concentrations in lettuce cultivated at 5% for the BP and BB treatments were similar but 63 and 66% lower, respectively, than those of the control soil. The results showed that the encapsulation of biochar with alginate enhanced adsorption by the biochar.

Abstract:Abstract Consistent use of large amounts of fertilizers, pesticides, and mulch can cause the accumulation of harmful substances in cotton plants. Among these harmful substances, cadmium (Cd), an undegradable element, stands out as being particularly highly toxic to plants. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of biochar (3%) and biofertilizer (1.5%) to decrease Cd uptake, increase cotton dry weight, and modulate the activities of photosynthetic and peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase enzyme (CAT) in cotton ( Gossypium hirsutum L.) grown in Cd-contaminated soil (0, 1, 2, or 4 mg Cd kg −1 soil) in pots. These studies showed that, as expected, exogenous Cd adversely affects cotton chlorophyll and photosynthesis. However, biochar and biofertilizer increased cotton dry weight by an average of 16.82% and 32.62%, respectively. Meanwhile, biochar and biofertilizer decreased the accumulation of Cd in cotton organs, and there was a significant reduction in the amount of Cd in bolls ( P < 0.05 ). Biochar and biofertilizer have a positive impact on cotton chlorophyll content, net photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, and intercellular CO 2 concentration. Thus, the addition of biochar and biofertilizer promote cotton growth. However, biochar and biofertilizer increased the SOD activity of leaves (47.70% and 77.21%), CAT activity of leaves (35.40% and 72.82%), SOD activity of roots (33.62% and 39.37%), and CAT activity of roots (36.91% and 60.29%), respectively, and the addition of biochar and biofertilizer decreased the content of MDA and electrolyte leakage rate. Redundancy analyses showed that biochar and biofertilizer also improved SOD and POD activities by reducing the heavy metal-induced oxidative stress in cotton and reducing Cd uptake in cotton organs. Therefore, biochar and biofertilizer have a positive effect on the growth of cotton.
