Abstract:The organization of scientific articles typically follows a standardized pattern, the well-known IMRaD structure (Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion). Using the PLOS series of journals as a case study, this paper looks at how the bibliographic references are distributed along the different sections of papers. We use the section titles of the articles to categorize the sections matching the IMRaD structure. We then identify the variations in the basic IMRaD structure of the different PLOS journals. The results show that, though dominant, the IMRaD structure often changes in some journals and these differences must be taken into account in order to compare the distribution of references along the text using an invariant measure, here the number of sentences in the texts. We examine the different distributions of the references in the articles in different journals and show that these distributions are relatively stable and maybe even invariant when taking into account the inversions of sections identified in some journals. Introduction The organization of scientific articles typically follows a standardized pattern, the well-known IMRaD structure (Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion). This structure has imposed itself in most major scientific journals in the mid-twentieth century, and has become the main standard in the 1970s (Sollaci and Pereira, 2004). Many studies have focused on various aspects of this structure: automatic classification of sentences in full-text (Agarwal and Yu, 2009), the effects of the use of the IMRaD style (Oriokot et al., 2011), creation of guidelines for scientific writing (Kucer, 1985; Meadows, 1985; Day and Gastel, 2006), providing structured abstracts (Nakayama et al., 2005) and editorial requirements (Barron, 2006).

Characterizing in-text citations in scientific articles: A large-scale analysis

Abstract:We report characteristics of in-text citations in over five million full text articles from two large databases - the PubMed Central Open Access subset and Elsevier journals - as functions of time, textual progression, and scientific field. The purpose of this study is to understand the characteristics of in-text citations in a detailed way prior to pursuing other studies focused on answering more substantive research questions. As such, we have analyzed in-text citations in several ways and report many findings here. Perhaps most significantly, we find that there are large field-level differences that are reflected in position within the text, citation interval (or reference age), and citation counts of references. In general, the fields of Biomedical and Health Sciences, Life and Earth Sciences, and Physical Sciences and Engineering have similar reference distributions, although they vary in their specifics. The two remaining fields, Mathematics and Computer Science and Social Science and Humanities, have different reference distributions from the other three fields and between themselves. We also show that in all fields the numbers of sentences, references, and in-text mentions per article have increased over time, and that there are field-level and temporal differences in the numbers of in-text mentions per reference. A final finding is that references mentioned only once tend to be much more highly cited than those mentioned multiple times.

Abstract:What makes a scientific article significant? This paper-part of a larger study which will examine how various kinds of significance can be related to one another in a coherent theoretical framework-focusses on the processes by which new knowledge claims are being integrated into the cognitive structure when they are cited in other papers. Citations appear both as “threads” linking the citing papers to the existing literature in the field, and as elements fulfilling specific functions within the arguments made in these papers. We have found that (1) it is misleading to equate every article with a single knowledge claim, let alone with an attempt to construct “a fact”; (2) even when the same “sentence” is cited repeatedly, it can be put to quite different uses in the citing papers; and (3) the process of codification of scientific knowledge through the use of references appears to be far more complex and multi-dimensional than citation context analyses focussing on the use and the gradual disappearance of modalities would lead us to believe. Some consequences for the use use of citation analysis to reconstruct cognitive structures will be discussed.

Abstract:How to differentiate citations is continuously an important research question of citation analysis. Recently, some researchers analyze full‐text academic articles with tools and techniques of natural language processing to find out the characteristics of in‐text citations. In this study, we analyze 4,255 articles published during 2007 to 2016 to explore how authors of library and information science (LIS) cite references in their articles. The pattern of citations shows that LIS authors cite more works on average but the average in‐text citation times per reference in an article only increase slightly in this period. There are more in‐text citations in the first quarter fraction of an article and the number of in‐text citations decrease gradually with text progression. The distribution of POS shows that when LIS authors mention references in text body, they use more noun, verb, and preposition than less adjective and adverb. We also choose the high frequency words of different POS to investigate which words authors prefer in in‐text citations. In these high frequency words, nouns tend to be about research topics. Verbs are neutral or used to describe methods or findings of these cited works. As to adjective and adverb, most of them are positive or neutral. But there are more negative words in adverb.
Identifying Research Fields within Business and Management: A Journal Cross-Citation Analysis

Abstract:A discipline such as business and management (B&M) is very broad and has many fields within it, ranging from fairly scientific ones such as management science or economics to softer ones such as information systems. There are at least two reasons why it is important to identify these sub-fields accurately. Firstly, for the purpose of normalizing citation data as it is well known that citation rates vary significantly between different disciplines. Secondly, because journal rankings and lists tend to split their classifications into different subjects, for example the the Association of Business Schools (ABS) list, which is a standard in the UK, has 22 different fields. Unfortunately, at the moment these are created in an ad hoc manner with no underlying rigour. The purpose of this paper is to identify possible sub-fields in B&M rigorously based on actual citation patterns. We have examined 450 journals in B&M which are included in the ISI Web of Science (WoS) and analysed the cross-citation rates between them enabling us to generate sets of coherent and consistent sub-fields that minimise the extent to which journals appear in several categories. Implications and limitations of the analysis are discussed

Abstract:Successful publishing of an article depends on several factors, including the structure of the main text, the so-called introduction, methods, results and discussion structure (IMRAD). The first objective of our work is to provide recent results on the number of paragraphs (pars.) per section used in articles published in major medical journals. Our second objective is the investigation of other structural elements, i.e., number of tables, figures and references and the availability of supplementary material. We analyzed data from randomly selected original articles published in years 2005, 2010 and 2015 from the journals The BMJ, The Journal of the American Medical Association, The Lancet, The New England Journal of Medicine and PLOS Medicine. Per journal and year 30 articles were investigated. Random effect meta-analyses were performed to provide pooled estimates. The effect of time was analyzed by linear mixed models. All articles followed the IMRAD structure. The number of pars. per section increased for all journals over time with 1.08 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.70-1.46) pars. per every two years. The largest increase was observed for the methods section (0.29 pars. per year; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.19-0.39). PLOS Medicine had the highest number of pars. The number of tables did not change, but number of figures and references increased slightly. Not only the standard IMRAD structure should be used to increase the likelihood for publication of an article but also the general layout of the target journal. Supplementary material has become standard. If no journal-specific information is available, authors should use 3/10/9/8 pars. for the introduction/methods/results/discussion sections.
Towards Generating Citation Sentences for Multiple References with Intent Control

Abstract:Machine-generated citation sentences can aid automated scientific literature review and assist article writing. Current methods in generating citation text were limited to single citation generation using the citing document and a cited document as input. However, in real-world situations, writers often summarize several studies in one sentence or discuss relevant information across the entire paragraph. In addition, multiple citation intents have been previously identified, implying that writers may need control over the intents of generated sentences to cover different scenarios. Therefore, this work focuses on generating multiple citations and releasing a newly collected dataset named CiteMI to drive the future research. We first build a novel generation model with the Fusion-in-Decoder approach to cope with multiple long inputs. Second, we incorporate the predicted citation intents into training for intent control. The experiments demonstrate that the proposed approaches provide much more comprehensive features for generating citation sentences.

Abstract:Natural language inference is critical in Natural Language Processing where semantics is involved. Also known as textual entailment recognition, it defines a directional relationship between pair of sentences, namely the text and the hypothesis. Identifying entailment, contradiction, and neutrality in text pairs is necessary for various language processing applications to reduce text redundancy. An overview of the critical works in this aspect for all languages, including the Indian language perspective, is detailed here. There is a high volume of textual entailment and related attempts in English and foreign languages. In contrast, there are only a few attempts for low resource languages. This article presents the progress in textual entailment for various languages and the development of different datasets for textual entailment. Over these years, the datasets developed differ in size and kind. Most of the datasets are raw or generated, and a few of the latest are translated datasets. The article also points to observation notes on the progress that has happened throughout these years.

Abstract:The advent of contextualised language models has brought gains in search effectiveness, not just when applied for re-ranking the output of classical weighting models such as BM25, but also when used directly for passage indexing and retrieval, a technique which is called dense retrieval. In the existing literature in neural ranking, two dense retrieval families have become apparent: single representation, where entire passages are represented by a single embedding (usually BERT's [CLS] token, as exemplified by the recent ANCE approach), or multiple representations, where each token in a passage is represented by its own embedding (as exemplified by the recent ColBERT approach). These two families have not been directly compared. However, because of the likely importance of dense retrieval moving forward, a clear understanding of their advantages and disadvantages is paramount. To this end, this paper contributes a direct study on their comparative effectiveness, noting situations where each method under/over performs w.r.t. each other, and w.r.t. a BM25 baseline. We observe that, while ANCE is more efficient than ColBERT in terms of response time and memory usage, multiple representations are statistically more effective than the single representations for MAP and MRR@10. We also show that multiple representations obtain better improvements than single representations for queries that are the hardest for BM25, as well as for definitional queries, and those with complex information needs.
A Sensitivity Analysis of the MSMARCO Passage Collection

Abstract:The recent MSMARCO passage retrieval collection has allowed researchers to develop highly tuned retrieval systems. One aspect of this data set that makes it distinctive compared to traditional corpora is that most of the topics only have a single answer passage marked relevant. Here we carry out a "what if" sensitivity study, asking whether a set of systems would still have the same relative performance if more passages per topic were deemed to be "relevant", exploring several mechanisms for identifying sets of passages to be so categorized. Our results show that, in general, while run scores can vary markedly if additional plausible passages are presumed to be relevant, the derived system ordering is relatively insensitive to additional relevance, providing support for the methodology that was used at the time the MSMARCO passage collection was created.

The rhetorical structure of science? A multidisciplinary analysis of article headings

Abstract:An effective structure helps an article to convey its core message. The optimal structure depends on the information to be conveyed and the expectations of the audience. In the current increasingly interdisciplinary era, structural norms can be confusing to the authors, reviewers and audiences of scientific articles. Despite this, no prior study has attempted to assess variations in the structure of academic papers across all disciplines. This article reports on the headings commonly used by over 1 million research articles from the PubMed Central Open Access collection, spanning 22 broad categories covering all academia and 172 out of 176 narrow categories. The results suggest that no headings are close to ubiquitous in any broad field and that there are substantial differences in the extent to which most headings are used. In the humanities, headings may be avoided altogether. Researchers should therefore be aware of unfamiliar structures that are nevertheless legitimate when reading, writing and reviewing articles.

Abstract:Semantic Textual Similarity (STS) and paraphrase de- tection are two NLP tasks that have a high focus on the meaning of sentences, and current research in both re- lies heavily on comparing fragments of text. Little to no work has been done in studying inference-centric ap- proaches to solve these tasks. We study the relation be- tween existing work and what we call mutual implica- tion (MI), a binary relationship between two sentences that holds when they textually entail each other. MI thus shifts the focus of STS and paraphrase detection to un- derstanding the meaning of a sentence in terms of its in- ferential properties. We study the comparison between MI, paraphrasing, and STS work. We then argue that MI should be considered a complementary evaluation met- ric for advancing work in areas as diverse as machine translation, natural language inference, etc. Finally, we study the limitations of MI and discuss possibilities for overcoming them.

Abstract:An analytical scheme that differentiates among the various types of cognitive and social functions of citations is used as the basis for an analysis of the results of a questionnaire designed to probe the citing behavior of a group of scientists who had cited one of four papers originating from a single biochemical laboratory. Even when papers fall within a relatively well-defined research area and are based on research conducted within a single lab, groups of scientists to which a given paper is of relevance can have quite distinct internal structures. We argue that the scientists'subjective reasons for citing a given work do not correspond with the actual argumentative uses of cited articles in citing texts. Scientists appear to regard the papers they cite as having a rather generalized significance even if in their citations they refer to very specific claims made in the original texts. The consequences of these findings for a theory of citation and for the use of citations in science studies are discussed.

Abstract:Scientific abstracts contain what is considered by the author(s) as information that best describe documents' content. They represent a compressed view of the informational content of a document and allow readers to evaluate the relevance of the document to a particular information need. However, little is known on their composition. This paper contributes to the understanding of the structure of abstracts, by comparing similarity between scientific abstracts and the text content of research articles. More specifically, using sentence-based similarity metrics, we quantify the phenomenon of text re-use in abstracts and examine the positions of the sentences that are similar to sentences in abstracts in the IMRaD structure (Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion), using a corpus of over 85,000 research articles published in the seven PLOS journals. We provide evidence that 84% of abstract have at least one sentence in common with the body of the article. Our results also show that the sections of the paper from which abstract sentence are taken are invariant across the PLOS journals, with sentences mainly coming from the beginning of the introduction and the end of the conclusion.

Abstract:This paper describes an analysis of communicative moves in discussion sections across seven disciplines—Physics, Biology, Environmental Science, Business, Language and Linguistics, Public and Social Administration, and Law. While introductions in academic writing have received attention recently, much less research has investigated discussion sections and there has been little investigation of their move structure, including interdisciplinary and NS/NNS variation. Findings in these areas have clear relevance for the teaching of ESP: the rapid growth in the number of research writers, and the need to teach them discipline-specific research writing, makes these factors increasingly important. Research articles (RAs) were analysed in terms of Dudley-Evans's 1994 model. The total corpus was 252 RAs (36 from each discipline, 1.4 million words). A number of marked interdisciplinary and NS/NNS differences were found in the type and number of moves and move cycles. Conclusions are that the findings have relevance for the teaching of research writing. They may help ESP teachers inform learners of typical move sequences and also how much flexibility the genre allows regarding obligatory and optional moves and cycles, and the optimal order of moves. A revised model for the discussion sections is also put forward.

Abstract:For the biomedical sciences, the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) make available a rich feature which cannot currently be merged properly with widely used citing/cited data. Here, we provide methods and routines that make MeSH terms amenable to broader usage in the study of science indicators: using Web-of-Science (WoS) data, one can generate the matrix of citing versus cited documents; using PubMed/MEDLINE data, a matrix of the citing documents versus MeSH terms can be generated analogously. The two matrices can also be reorganized into a 2-mode matrix of MeSH terms versus cited references. Using the abbreviated journal names in the references, one can, for example, address the question whether MeSH terms can be used as an alternative to WoS Subject Categories for the purpose of normalizing citation data. We explore the applicability of the routines in the case of a research program about the amyloid cascade hypothesis in Alzheimer's disease (AD). One conclusion is that referenced journals provide archival structures, whereas MeSH terms indicate mainly variation (including novelty) at the research front. Furthermore, we explore the option of using the citing/cited matrix for main-path analysis as a by-product of the software.

Characterizing References from Different Disciplines: A Perspective of Citation Content Analysis

Abstract:Multidisciplinary cooperation is now common in research since social issues inevitably involve multiple disciplines. In research articles, reference information, especially citation content, is an important representation of communication among different disciplines. Analyzing the distribution characteristics of references from different disciplines in research articles is basic to detecting the sources of referred information and identifying contributions of different disciplines. This work takes articles in PLoS as the data and characterizes the references from different disciplines based on Citation Content Analysis (CCA). First, we download 210,334 full-text articles from PLoS and collect the information of the in-text citations. Then, we identify the discipline of each reference in these academic articles. To characterize the distribution of these references, we analyze three characteristics, namely, the number of citations, the average cited intensity and the average citation length. Finally, we conclude that the distributions of references from different disciplines are significantly different. Although most references come from Natural Science, Humanities and Social Sciences play important roles in the Introduction and Background sections of the articles. Basic disciplines, such as Mathematics, mainly provide research methods in the articles in PLoS. Citations mentioned in the Results and Discussion sections of articles are mainly in-discipline citations, such as citations from Nursing and Medicine in PLoS.

Adverbial Markers of Epistemic Modality Across Disciplinary Discourses: A Contrastive Study of Research Articles in Six Academic Disciplines

Abstract:Abstract Epistemic adverbs, like other markers of epistemic modality, are concerned with the speaker’s assessment of the truth value of the proposition. In other words, they indicate that the speaker considers certain situations as possible, impossible, probable, certain, or uncertain. At the same time, they signal the author’s presence in the text, and invite the reader to make his/her own conclusions and interpretations. The use of modal markers has been demonstrated to differ across academic disciplines, but the specific differences concerning the use of epistemic adverbs have not been studied systematically. This paper investigates the use of epistemic adverbs in research articles representing six disciplines belonging to three different branches of science: the humanities (linguistics and literary studies), the social sciences (law and sociology), and the natural sciences (physics and medicine), with the aim of establishing discipline-specific tendencies in their use. The study is based on a corpus of 160 research articles compiled by the author. It begins with an attempt at delimiting the category of epistemic adverbs in English. After that, a list of the most frequent epistemic adverbs in the subcorpora of all the disciplines is established and discussed. The study demonstrates that frequent use of epistemic adverbs is largely a property of research articles in the humanities and social sciences. Medical and physics research articles use them significantly less often. The most frequent epistemic adverbs in the research articles under analysis include indeed, perhaps, clearly, certainly, of course, arguably, possibly, and reportedly. Some adverbs appear to be associated with specific disciplines, e.g., clearly (physics, linguistics, sociology, medicine), indeed (linguistics, literary studies, sociology), possibly, reportedly (medicine), arguably (law). The association of individual adverbs with specific disciplines may serve as an important clue to the understanding of their functions, in particular in the case of the less frequent ones, such as arguably and reportedly, which remain significantly understudied. The findings may also prove useful in teaching English for academic purposes.
On the referential capacity of language models: An internalist rejoinder to Mandelkern & Linzen

Abstract:In a recent paper, Mandelkern & Linzen (2024) - henceforth M&L - address the question of whether language models' (LMs) words refer. Their argument draws from the externalist tradition in philosophical semantics, which views reference as the capacity of words to "achieve 'word-to-world' connections". In the externalist framework, causally uninterrupted chains of usage, tracing every occurrence of a name back to its bearer, guarantee that, for example, 'Peano' refers to the individual Peano (Kripke 1980). This account is externalist both because words pick out referents 'out there' in the world, and because what determines reference are coordinated linguistic actions by members of a community, and not individual mental states. The "central question to ask", for M&L, is whether LMs too belong to human linguistic communities, such that words by LMs may also trace back causally to their bearers. Their answer is a cautious "yes": inputs to LMs are linguistic "forms with particular histories of referential use"; "those histories ground the referents of those forms"; any occurrence of 'Peano' in LM outputs is as causally connected to the individual Peano as any other occurrence of the same proper name in human speech or text; therefore, occurrences of 'Peano' in LM outputs refer to Peano. In this commentary, we first qualify M&L's claim as applying to a narrow class of natural language expressions. Thus qualified, their claim is valid, and we emphasise an additional motivation for that in Section 2. Next, we discuss the actual scope of their claim, and we suggest that the way they formulate it may lead to unwarranted generalisations about reference in LMs. Our critique is likewise applicable to other externalist accounts of LMs (e.g., Lederman & Mahowald 2024; Mollo & Milliere 2023). Lastly, we conclude with a comment on the status of LMs as members of human linguistic communities.

Abstract:The article is devoted to the study of contemporary English media texts from the point of view of functional syntactic peculiarities of its expressiveness, especially on the example of parenthesis as a means to influence the recipients. The domineering cognitive-discursive paradigm of text studies allows one to analyze media text from the point of its integral impact on the addressee. Contemporary mass media use different ways of influencing the readers, for example, television, radio, printed and electronic press, blogs and videoblogs. A special interest lies in the printed press, which uses integrated means of transmitting information, including references to Internet sources and TV shows. Despite using different ways of influencing the recipients, the key means of conveying author’s intentions is its syntactic organization. Due to different syntactic constructions authors of a media text can facilitate a topic disclosure, forming the readers’ opinion about a subject matter and the author of the text. A great role is played by parenthesis, which is widely used in popular science texts to explain terms, comment on certain events or sources of the information given in the article, clarify some information, etc. In the given article we analyze some functions of the parenthetic constructions on the example of the texts taken from the magazine National Geographic and unified by the topic «Science» in accordance with the author’s communicative intentions. Using continuing sampling method in choosing the examples conveying the category of expressivity, it was discovered that the domineering function of a parenthetical phrase in the analyzed texts is a comment, which serves as a means of representing an author’s point of view and adding information to the facts thus forming the readers’ opinion.
