Effects of Seven Plant Essential Oils on the Growth, Development and Feeding Behavior of the Wingless Aphis gossypii Glover

Abstract:Cotton aphid Aphis gossypii Glover damages plants such as cotton directly by feeding on leaves and indirectly by transmitting viruses and excreting honeydew, which interferes with photosynthesis. The control of A. gossypii is still dominated by the frequent use of insecticides, which leads to a gradual increase in pesticide resistance in A. gossypii. Research is therefore needed on non-pesticide controls. In this study, seven plant essential oils (EOs) of Ocimum sanctum L., Ocimum basilicum L., Ocimum gratissimum L., Mentha piperita L., Mentha arvensis L., Tagetes erecta L., and Lavandula angustifolia Mill. were examined as potential controls for A. gossypii. We used life tables and electrical penetration graphs (EPG) to explore the effects of these EOs on the growth, development, and feeding behavior of A. gossypii, followed by a study of effects of the EOs on honeydew secretion by A. gossypii as a measure of their antifeedant activity. We found that the EOs of O. sanctum, M. piperita, M. arvensis and T. erecta significantly extended the pre-adult developmental period. Also, adult longevity, number of oviposition days, and total fecundity of A. gossypii treated with the EOs of M. arvensis or T. erecta were all significantly reduced. Aphids treated with the EOs of O. sanctum, M. piperita, or L. angustifolia showed significant reductions in their net reproductive rate (R0), intrinsic rate of increase (rm), and finite rate of increase (λ), and significant increases in mean generation time (T). In terms of their effects on the feeding behavior of A. gossypii, all seven EOs significantly reduced the total duration of phloem feeding (E2 waves), the number of phloem-feeding bouts, and the proportion of time spent in secretion of saliva into phloem sieve elements (E1 waves) and phloem feeding (E2). The total duration and number of E1 waves (saliva secretion) were significantly reduced by the EOs of O. sanctum, O. gratissimum, and M. arvensis. For C waves (probing in non-vascular tissues), the total duration spent in this behavior was significantly increased by the EOs of O. gratissimum, M. piperita, and L. angustifolia, but the number of such probing events was increased only by L. angustifolia EO. The EOs of O. basilicum, M. arvensis, and T. erecta significantly increased the total duration of ingestion of xylem sap (G waves), while the total time of mechanical difficulty in stylet penetration (F waves) was increased by M. arvensis. The total duration and number of the non-probing events (Np waves) were significantly increased by EOs of O. sanctum and O. basilicum. After treatment with all seven of these EOs, the area covered by honeydew was significantly reduced compared with the control. Studies have analyzed that EOs of O. sanctum, M. piperita, and T. erecta were most effective, followed by the EOs of M. arvensis and L. angustifolia, and finally the EOs of O. basilicum and O. gratissimum. In the present study, the EOs of O. sanctum, M. piperita, and T. erecta were found to have potential for the development as antifeedants of A. gossypii, and these data provide a basis for future research on non-pesticide chemical control of A. gossypii.

Methyl Eugenol Bioactivities As A New Potential Botanical Insecticide Against Major Insect Pests and Their Natural Enemies on Rice (oriza Sativa)

Abstract:The bioactivities of methyl eugenol (ME) against rice insect pests, the brown planthopper (BPH), Nilarparvata lugens, the leaf folder (RLF), Cnaphalocrocis medinalis, the striped stem borer (SSB), Chilo suppressalis, and their major natural enemies, a predator Cyrtorhinus lividipennis and parasitoids Anagrus nilaparvatae and Trichogramma japonicum were determined under laboratory conditions. The results showed ME had repellent, systemic and contact insecticidal activities against BPH. The nymphal mortality increased with raised ME concentrations. The LC50 value for BPH using an impregnated filter paper bioassay was 1025 mg/L which was much lower than that of 3778 mg/L obtained from an immersion bioassay. ME also had a contact toxicity against RLF larvae with a LC50 of 250 mg/L However, bioactivity of ME against SSB larvae was much lower than against RLF. Only 21.8% of 2nd instar SSB larvae died at 24 h after being treated with 8000 mg/L ME. In addition, ME also had contact toxicity to predator C. lividipennis and parasitic natural enemies A. nilaparvatae, T. japonicum, with LC50 values of 527, 105 and 123 mg/L, respectively. Even so, the toxicity of ME to natural enemies was much lower than that of chemical insecticides. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The Aphis gossypii is a major threat of cotton worldwide due to its short life cycle and rapid reproduction. Chemical control is the primary method used to manage the cotton aphid, which has significant environmental impacts. Therefore, prioritizing eco-friendly alternatives is essential for managing the cotton aphid. The ladybird, Hippodamia variegata , is a predominant predator of the cotton aphid. Its performance in cotton plantation is directly linked to chemical communication, where volatile compounds emitted from aphid-infested plants play important roles in successful predation. Here, we comprehensively studied the chemical interaction between the pest, natural enemy and host plants by analyzing the volatile profiles of aphid-infested cotton plants using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). We then utilized the identified volatile compounds in electrophysiological recording (EAG) and behavioral assays. Through behavioral tests, we initially demonstrated the clear preference of both larvae and adults of H. variegata for aphid-infested plants. Subsequently, 13 compounds, namely α-pinene, cis -3-hexenyl acetate, 4-ethyl-1-octyn-3-ol, β-ocimene, dodecane, E-β-farnesene, decanal, methyl salicylate, β-caryophyllene, α-humulene, farnesol, DMNT, and TMTT were identified from aphid-infested plants. All these compounds were electrophysiologically active and induced detectable EAG responses in larvae and adults. Y-tube olfactometer assays indicated that, with few exceptions for larvae, all identified chemicals were attractive to H. variegata , particularly at the highest tested concentration (100 mg/ml). The outcomes of this study establish a practical foundation for developing attractants for H. variegata and open avenues for potential advancements in aphid management strategies by understanding the details of chemical communication at a tritrophic level.

Repellency, contact toxicity, and anti-oviposition effects of three ethanol-extracted plant essential oils on Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae)

Abstract:There are more than 1200 species of whiteflies found across the globe. Due to the high level of resistance of whitefly against synthetic insecticides, alternate pest management measures have their significance. Plant essential oils (EOs) affect insect pests in many ways, such as via stimulatory, deterrent, toxic, and hormonal effects. This study was designed to determine the repellency of EOs, toxicity, and oviposition deterrent activities of Allium ascalonicum, Cinnamomum camphora, and Mentha haplocalyx against adult whiteflies. In repellency determination experiments, a single tomato plant was treated with 10 ml of ethanol-extracted EO with 1000 ppm concentration. Results showed that C. camphora EO was the most repellent for whitefly compared to M. haplocalyx and A. ascalonicum. The oviposition deterrent experiments revealed that C. camphora has the highest oviposition deterrent effect, followed by M. haplocalyx and A. ascalonicum. A single plant treatment method was used to assess the contact toxicity of three EOs against whitefly after 12, 24, 48, and 72 h of exposure. The results revealed that C. camphora is more toxic to whitefly than M. haplocalyx and A. ascalonicum. After determining the antagonistic effects of these EOs, the oils were analyzed using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry to identify the chemical components. It can be concluded that C. camphora is the most effective oil EO in terms of toxicity, repellence, and oviposition deterrence, followed by M. haplocalyx and A. ascalonicum under greenhouse conditions. Our results introduce some new eco-friendly plant EOs to control whiteflies.
Repellent Effects of Coconut Fatty Acid Methyl Esters and Their Blends with Bioactive Volatiles on Winged Myzus persicae (Sulzer) Aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae)

Abstract:Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is one of the most important aphid crop pests, due to its direct damage and its ability to transmit viral diseases in crops. The objective is to test whether spraying nanoemulsions of botanical products repels winged individuals of M. persicae in a bioassay in culture chambers. The bioactive volatiles were applied on pepper plants at a dose of 0.2% alone or at 0.1% of each component in blends. A treated plant and a control plant were placed at each side of an entomological cage inside a growth chamber. The winged individuals were released between the plants, in a black-painted Petri dish suspended by wires in the upper half of the cage. The most repellent products were farnesol (repellency index, RI = 40.24%), (E)-anethole (RI = 30.85%) and coconut fatty acid methyl ester (coconut FAME) (RI = 28.93%), alone or in the following blends: farnesol + (E)-anethole + distilled lemon oil (RI = 36.55%) or (E)-anethole + distilled lemon oil + coconut FAME (RI = 30.63%). The observed effect of coconut FAME on aphids is the first report of this product having a repellent effect on a crop pest. Repellent substances for viral disease vectors should be further investigated to develop new strategies for plant protection.
Plant Essential Oils: Dual Action of Toxicity and Egg-Laying Inhibition on Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae), Unveiling Their Potential as Botanical Pesticides

Abstract:Tetranychus urticae, a prominent pest mite in strawberry and vegetable cultivation in China, has developed escalating resistance due to extensive chemical pesticide application. Consequently, there is an urgent need to identify safe and efficacious methods to reduce resistance development. In this study, 38 commercially available plant essential oils (EOs) were screened for their acaricidal potential and ability to inhibit oviposition. The findings revealed that 13 EOs exhibited notable acaricidal activity, with lemon EO demonstrating the highest toxicity, followed by sage, patchouli, frankincense, lemongrass, palmarosa, and oregano EOs. In addition, 18 EOs displayed significant inhibitory effects on oviposition, with lemon EO exhibiting the highest inhibition rate (99.15%) and inhibition index (0.98). Subsequently, sage, frankincense, clove, lemongrass, oregano, patchouli, myrrh, black pepper, palmarosa, and geranium EOs also showed inhibition rates exceeding 50%. Despite black pepper, clove, myrrh, and oregano EOs demonstrating relatively low toxicity against T. urticae, they exhibited heightened efficacy in inhibiting oviposition and suppressing population expansion. This study conducted a comparative assessment of the acaricidal and oviposition inhibition activities of EOs and their principal constituents, thus providing a theoretical basis for the development of botanical acaricides against T. urticae.

Abstract:Abstract Electroantennogram responses (EAGs) of Lysiphlebia japonica (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) to cotton plant volatiles and cotton aphid pheromones were measured with EAG recording techniques. No sexual difference of EAG responses was found to all test samples under concentration of 10 μl/ml. The most effective chemicals were 1‐heptanol, hexanal, heptanal, saturated primary‐alcohols with six‐carbon to nine‐carbon chain and benzaldehyde. Both male and female showed the highest EAGs to green leaf volatiles (GLVs) and moderate EAGs to terpenoids among which geraniol was the most active. Cotton aphid pheromones elicited relative high EAGs. Among the four plant extracts, cotton leaf extract was the most effective. Dose curves were constructed from six female wasps' EAGs to four chosen chemicals, in which GLVs showed lower thresholds than terpenoids. According to the results above, we may draw the following conclusions: GLVs could be more important in longer distance orientation, while terpenoids may be more important in shorter ranges. Aphid pheromones may be effective attractants to parasitoids. Preadult experience can influence the antenna1 sensitivity of the parasitoid.

Abstract:Fecundity (egg production) and fertility (egg hatchability/progeny production) are important components of both sexual and asexual reproduction of insects. Some plant essential oils (EOs) are reported to be active inhibitors against various insect pests by reducing or completely hindering their fecundity and fertility. The present study was carried out to determine the inhibitory effects of three plant EOs [eucalyptus (Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehn.), peppermint (Mentha piperita L.) and anise (Pimpinella anisum L.)] and their major components (1,8-cineole, L-menthol and trans-anethole, respectively) on egg-laying and progeny production of bean weevil, Acanthoscelides obtectus Say (Coleoptera: Bruchidae), which is an economically important pest of common bean, Phaseolus vulgaris L. (Fabaceae), in tropical and subtropical regions. The EOs were extracted by hydro-distillation, and their chemical composition was determined by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The oils and components were bio-assayed via fumigation against the pest by exposing newly emerged virgin females and young males to the median lethal concentration (LC50) of each material for 10 h. After the exposure, the surviving individuals were mated in the following combinations; treated females × treated males (TF × TM), untreated females × treated males (UF × TM), treated females × untreated males (TF × UM), untreated females × untreated males (UF × UM). According to the results, the highest fecundity inhibition was observed in TF × TM with 86.05%, 71.9% and 55.72% for anise, eucalyptus and peppermint oils, respectively. In addition, the highest progeny production inhibition was seen in the TF × TM combination with 93.3%, 68.0% and 44.9% after exposing to eucalyptus, anise and peppermint oils, respectively. Overall the results showed that the exposure of newly emerged adults by the median lethal concentration of EOs and their major components negatively affected the egg-laying and progeny production of bean weevil. These results may also pioneer new approaches in insect pest control of stored products.

Chemical Composition and Insecticidal Potential of Essential Oil from Murraya koenigii (L.) Obtained by Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents

Abstract:Aphis craccivora Koch and Planococcus lilacinus Cockerell are phloem feeders and act as vectors for transmitting plant viruses to agricultural and horticultural crops thereby damaging them. The persistent and widespread use of synthetic, wide-spectrum pesticides has resulted in resistance development that is detrimental to the environment, human health, and natural enemies of pests. The present investigation uses various extraction mediums to examine the insecticidal efficacy of essential oils (EOs) isolated from Murraya koenigii (L.) leaves. Increase in yield was observed in the EO extracted using NADES-AHD [0.16% (obtained with hydro-distillation)] to 0.30% [obtained with N-1 (glycerol:lactic acid)]. EO obtained with water was found more effective against A. craccivora (LD50 = 0.89 µL/insect) and followed by N-1 (glycerol:lactic acid), and N-3 (choline chloride:citric acid) (LD50 = 1.29-1.38 µL/insect). Similarly, EO isolated by water and N-4 (choline chloride:oxalic acid) was effective against P. lilacinus (LD50 = 2.63-3.06 µL/insect). Additionally, the EO prepared by water substantially reduced glutathione S-transferase (GST) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in target pests, suggesting that these enzymes may be the EOs' site of action. NADES-AHD has enhanced the EO yield as compared to the conventional method. The EO obtained with water showed promising toxicity against target pests and target site of action. Therefore, based on field and greenhouse bio-efficacy experiments, EOs/biopesticides/botanicals can be proposed for controlling the spread of mealy bugs and aphids.
Oviposition deterrent effects of several plant essential oils on Bactrocera dorsalis (Diptera: Tephritidae).

Abstract:The oviposition deterrent effects of six kinds of plant essential oils on Bactrocera dorsalis were evaluated.The results showed that oviposition deterrent rates of Mangi feraindica and Psidium guajava which dipped in the oil of Cymbopogon nardus,Cinnamomum camphora,Ilex yuiana,Capsicum annuum were all above 50% and their puncture numbers were significantly lower than the control and the other oils included Salvia sclarea and Cinnamomum cassia.The oviposition deterrents were more efficiency for C.nardus and I.yuiana as the concentration increased.It was confirmed that 7 000 μg/mL was the best concentration used as oviposition deterrents,while the best concentration for C.annuum and C.camphora oils were 5 000 μg/mL.The persistent period of C.annuum oil lasting 6 days was the longest,while the persistent period of C.camphora and I.yuiana oils lasted 4 days and only 1 day for C.nardus oil.The number of eggs that oriental fruit fly laid on Averrhoa carambola dipped in the oils of C.annuum,C.camphora and I.yuiana were significantly lower than the control in the large space.

Abstract:The Lamiaceae family is widely distributed worldwide. In this study, we investigated the insecticidal activity of five Lamiaceae essential oils against Thrips flavus Schrank and the phytotoxic activity against Glycine max (L.) Merr., Zea mays L., Portulaca oleracea L., and Echinochloa oryzoides (Ard.) Fritsch. Then, the chemical composition of the five essential oils was analyzed by using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The five Lamiaceae essential oils were melissa, basil, rosemary, negundo chastetree, and salvia. The main constituents of the five Lamiaceae essential oils were preliminarily determined to be as follows: α-pinene and 1,8-cineole in the rosemary essential oil; β-pinene, γ-terpinene, and d-limonene in the negundo chastetree essential oil; β-cadinene and isolongifolen-5-one in the melissa essential oil; 5-allylguaiacol in the basil essential oil; and isopropyl myristate, linalyl acetate, and linalool in the salvia essential oil. Using a bioassay, it was found that, among the five essential oils, the melissa essential oil exhibited the lowest LC50 value, which was 0.18 mg/mL, and the salvia essential oil exhibited the highest LC50 value, which was 0.42 mg/mL. The control efficacy of the five essential oils significantly increased with time and concentration in pot experiments. The negundo chastetree, basil, rosemary, and salvia essential oils at 900.00 g a.i.·hm-2 showed high control efficacy against T. flavus, with values higher than 90%. Female thrips were attracted to the negundo chastetree essential oil. The five essential oils were also tested for their effects on the germination rate, germination potential, germination index, and shoot length of G. max, Z. mays, P. oleracea, and E. oryzoides. The basil essential oil significantly inhibited the germination of P. oleracea, with germination at a concentration of 1.0 mg/mL being only 11.11 ± 5.09%. This study provides a reference for the development of botanical pesticides to control T. flavus, crops, and weeds.
Volatiles from Cotton Plants Infested by Agrotis segetum (Lep.: Noctuidae) Attract the Larval Parasitoid Microplitis mediator (Hym.: Braconidae)

Abstract:Herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs), chemicals produced by plants infested by herbivorous insects, can act as kairomones that recruit natural enemies of the pest herbivore. Agrotis segetum (Denis and Schiffermüller) is a common, important pest of seedling cotton in Xinjiang Province, China, and the braconid Microplitis mediator (Haliday) is an important mortality factor of this pest’s larvae. In olfactometer tests, which included healthy foliage, infested foliage, or infested roots, M. mediator preferred A. segetum-infested cotton plants to healthy cotton plants. In GC-MS analyses of plant-emitted volatiles, we found that compounds emitted increased 14.9- and 13.3- fold after leaf infestation and root infestation, respectively, compared to healthy control plants. The volatiles were mainly p-xylene, nonanal, tetradecane, decanal, benzaldehyde, β-caryophyllene, and humulene, while linalool was only present in the leaf-infestation treatment. In addition, principal component analysis indicated that all 18 compounds were associated with the infested plants, especially β-caryophyllene, p-xylene, and decanal. Based on the above studies and previous functional evaluations of the volatile compounds, it can be demonstrated that these compounds play a crucial role in modulating the interactions between A. segetum and M. mediator and regulating parasitoid behavior. It may be possible to enhance the biological control of A. segetum by M. mediator through the application of HIPVs.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Alpinia zerumbet cv. ’Variegata’, as a special spice, has attracted social attention for its potential to replace synthetic chemicals as insecticides and repellents in food protection. In this work, the essential oils (EOs) from different organs of Alpinia zerumbet cv. ’Variegata’ (stem and leaf, flower, and rhizome) were extracted by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The contact toxicities and repellent activities of the extracted EOs, along with their common components, against three insect species (Tribolium castaneum, Lasioderma serricorne, and Liposcelis bostrychophila) were evaluated. GC-MS analysis identified 25 components, and eucalyptol and camphor were the common primary components in the three EOs. The result showed that EOs and the main components (eucalyptol and camphor) exhibited varying degrees of contact toxicity and repellent activity against three insect species. Camphor exhibited more obvious contact toxicity than eucalyptol against both insect species (L. serricorne and L. bostrychophila), but the toxic effect was opposite for T. castaneum. The gray relation analysis explained that REOA had the strongest repellency against L. serricorne, with a coefficient of 0.52. The results in this study suggest that EOs of A. zerumbet cv. ’Variegata’ have the potential to be developed into botanical insecticides and repellents to control stored-product insects.

Abstract:In this study, three plant essential oils extracted from thyme ( Thymus vulgaris L.), orange ( Citrus sinensis L.) and laurel ( Laurus nobilis L.), whose major components were carvacrol (93.95%), limonene (96.87%) and 1,8-cineole (57.49%), respectively, according to our GS/MS analysis results, were evaluated singly and in binary (1:1) and tertiary (1:1:1) combinations for their fumigant and contact toxicities against adult Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae), a pest on a wide range of commercially important crops grown both indoor and outdoor, under laboratory conditions. Results showed that all essential oils tested, both alone and in all binary and tertiary combinations, exhibited concentration-depended fumigant and contact toxicities. In fumigant toxicity tests, mortality rates of adult A. gossypii increased with increasing concentration from 2 to 10 μL/L and increasing exposure time from 8 to 48 h. In general, binary and tertiary combinations of the oils were more toxic than either oil alone. For instance, at the highest concentration (10 μL/L air) and exposure time (48 h) used in fumigant tests, all possible binary and tertiary combinations of three essential oils tested caused mortalities ranging from 92.4 to 100%, whereas single treatments of these oils yielded mortalities changing between 72.7 and 97.3%. The highest synergistic action was seen in their tertiary combination (thyme + orange + laurel) by a LC 90 value of 5.5 μL/L air after an 8-h-fumigation. In contact toxicity tests, mortality of the aphid species generally increased with increasing concentrations of the oils. For instance, thyme, orange and laurel oils did not produce more than 36% mortality after 24 h of exposure at two lower concentrations (0.5% and 1%), they achieved 98.7, 100 and 97.8% mortalities at the highest concentration (5%), respectively. Although mortalities by the oils alone and their binary and tertiary mixtures at the highest concentration (5%) did not differ significantly from each other, the highest synergistic action was seen in their tertiary combination (thyme + orange + laurel) by 7400 ppm after an exposure period of 24 h. Neither the essential oils alone nor their binary and tertiary combinations had any phytotoxic effect on potted tomato, eggplant, pepper and bean plants at the highest concentration and longest exposure period. Overall results suggest that tested essential oils, especially their binary and combinations each other may be promising candidates for the control of A. gossypii . However, further tests under field conditions are recommended to validate the laboratory results.

Roles of α-Farnesene in the Behaviors of Codling Moth Females

Abstract:Reproduction and olfactory behavioral responses of codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.), females to synthetic α-farnesene were observed in the laboratory as well as their reproduction behaviors in an apple orchard. Calling levels were lifted and ovipositional peaks were advanced in codling moth females at presence of 1μg and 0.1 μg of α-farnesene, respectively. Mated females of codling moth more actively responded to 0.01 μg α-farnesene with walking and wing-fanning while walking than to other doses (0.001, 0.1, 1, 10 μg ) and control. The results show that α-farnesene plays important roles in the behaviors of codling moth females. However, the differences between responses to α-farnesene and those to apple volatiles by codling moth females indicate that components other than α-farnesene in apple volatiles also have biological activities

Abstract:Peppermint essential oil (EO) has been extensively tested to date in reducing stored-product insects and insects of public health concern with very promising results, while only a few studies target important crop pests. There is also very little information on the effects of peppermint EO on non-target organisms, especially concerning contact and gastric effects at the same time. The goal of the investigation was the determination of the effect of peppermint EO on the mortality of Aphis fabae Scop.; the feeding intensity and weight gain of Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say. larvae; and the mortality and voracity of non-target organism Harmonia axyridis Pallas larvae. Our research indicates promising use for the M. piperita EO against aphids and young larvae (second instars) of the Colorado potato beetle. M. piperita EO showed good insecticidal efficacy against A. fabae with LC50 = 0.5442% for nymphs and 0.3768% for wingless females after 6 h. Over time, the LC50 value decreased. For the second instar larvae of L. decemlineata, the LC50 values were 0.6278%, 0.3449%, and 0.2020% after 1, 2, and 3 days of the experiment, respectively. On the other hand, older larvae (fourth instar) were characterized by significant resistance to the tested oil concentrations with LC50 value = 0.7289% after 96 h. M. piperita oil (contact and gastric effects) at a concentration of 0.5% was found to be toxic to young larvae (2 and 5 days old) of H. axyridis, while EO at a concentration of 1% was toxic to 8-day-old larvae. Thus, for the sake of ladybug safety, it would be advisable to use EO from M. piperita against aphids at concentrations lower than 0.5%.

Subclavian Central Venous Catheters and Ultrasound Guidance: Policy vs Practice

Abstract:Purpose Policy statements recommend the use of ultrasound guidance (USG) to improve patient safety during placement of central venous catheters (CVCs). Studies have conclusively demonstrated greater success rates and fewer complications with the use of USG in catheter placement using the internal jugular vein approach. Data supporting the use of USG for the subclavian vein (SCV) approach, however, have been less conclusive, and USG for SCV cannulation is rarely used in clinical practice. We compared USG placement versus anatomic placement during subclavian insertion of a CVC. Methods A prospective randomized study was performed in March 2010 using a simulation model. Results Ultrasound guidance did not provide a statistically significant benefit for successful cannulation of the SCV (93.3% with USG and 100% without; P=0.15 or 2) or for rate of inadvertent arterial puncture (3.3% with USG and 0% without; P=0.31). Conclusions The use of USG to access the SCV utilizing a task trainer did not improve time to cannulation or success rates. Further study is required to delineate why USG for SCV cannulation has not been widely adopted in clinical practice.
Plant volatile organic compounds attractive to Lygus pratensis

Abstract:Abstract Lygus pratensis , an important agricultural pest, is seriously detrimental to cotton in China. For the research and development of attractants, the present study screened and identified plant volatiles with activity against the pest. Out of the total 20 volatiles identified from seven hosts, 16 volatiles were selected and evaluated. Electrophysiological test results revealed the highest electroantennogram values of heptacosane, heptadecane, decanal, ( E )-4-hexen-1-ol, dodecane, β-pinene, and cis -3-hexenyl isovalerate on adult insects. A significant difference in the behavior of female adults ( P < 0.01) was noted in the trend behavioral tests when the concentration of heptacosane, nonadecane, heptadecane, decanal, 3-hexen-1-ol, and dodecane was 10 −3 (V/V), and that of β-pinene was 10 −4 (V/V). The field trapping test confirmed a significant difference in the trapping effect of heptadecane at 10 −2 (V/V) and 10 −3 (V/V), decanal at 10 −1 (V/V) and 10 −3 (V/V), β-pinene at 10 −2 (V/V), and dodecane at 10 −4 (V/V) compared to that of other volatiles ( P < 0.05). These findings suggested the strong attractant effect of heptadecane, dodecane, decanal, and β-pinene on adults, indicating their potential application as effective attractants for the ecological control of L. pratensis .

Abstract:Pesticides can induce target plants to release odors that are attractive or repellent to their herbivore insects. But, to date, the activity of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), singly or as mixtures, which play a crucial role in the olfactory behavior of herbivore insects, remains unclear. The objective of our research was to investigate the impact of thiamethoxam (TMX), a pesticide, on the emission of odors by wheat plants, and how these odors influence the behavior of grain aphids (Sitobion miscanthi). S. miscanthi showed a greater repellent response to the volatiles emitted by Thx-induced plants compared to those emitted by uncoated plants. Using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS), we discovered that TMX greatly induced the release of VOCs in wheat plants. For instance, the levels of Bornyl acetate, 2-Oxepanone, Methyl acrylate, Cyclohexene, α-Pinene, and 1-Nonanol in coated wheat plants were significantly higher as compared to uncoated wheat plants. Moreover, varying concentrations also had an impact on the olfactory behavior of S. miscanthi. For instance, Cyclohexene exhibited clear attractiveness to aphids at concentrations of 100 μL/mL, whereas it displayed evident repellent properties at concentrations of 1 μL/mL and 10 μL/mL. These new findings demonstrate how TMX-induced VOCs affect the behavior of S. miscanthi and could help in developing innovative approaches to manage aphids by manipulating the emission of plant volatiles. Furthermore, these findings can also be utilized to evaluate substances that either attract or repel aphids, with the aim of implementing early monitoring and environmentally friendly methods to manage aphids, while simultaneously impeding the spread of viruses.
