Significance of Deep T-Wave Inversions in an Asymptomatic Athlete With a Family History of Sudden Death: Addendum—Full Sporting Disqualification

Abstract:INTRODUCTION Our group recently published a case study of an asymptomatic football player with a family history (FH) of sudden death, whereby preparticipation screening identified an electrocardiographic abnormality highly suggestive of a cardiomyopathy. After extensive cardiovascular examinations, an inherited cardiac pathology could not be identified. The athlete was given a 1-year medical clearance for competitive sport but was to present himself if becoming symptomatic (please refer Wilson et al for the full report). This addendum reports a series of events that demonstrate the importance of continued surveillance for symptoms suggestive of cardiac pathology in athletes demonstrating lateral wall T-wave inversion, all of which ultimately lead to this player being disqualified from competitive sport.
