Abstract:Models of strategy evolution on static networks help us understand how population structure can promote the spread of traits like cooperation. One key mechanism is the formation of altruistic spatial clusters, where neighbors of a cooperative individual are likely to reciprocate, which protects prosocial traits from exploitation. But most real-world interactions are ephemeral and subject to exogenous restructuring, so that social networks change over time. Strategic behavior on dynamic networks is difficult to study, and much less is known about the resulting evolutionary dynamics. Here, we provide an analytical treatment of cooperation on dynamic networks, allowing for arbitrary spatial and temporal heterogeneity. We show that transitions among a large class of network structures can favor the spread of cooperation, even if each individual social network would inhibit cooperation when static. Furthermore, we show that spatial heterogeneity tends to inhibit cooperation, whereas temporal heterogeneity tends to promote it. Dynamic networks can have profound effects on the evolution of prosocial traits, even when individuals have no agency over network structures.

Evolutionary dynamics with temporal higher-order interactions

Abstract:Humans interact and cooperate in structured societies, which are often represented by complex networks. Previous explorations mainly focus on pairwise and static network structures, where each link connects two nodes permanently and never changes. However, empirical human collective interactions go beyond static time-invariant one-to-one relationships. Recently, researchers have made vital progress in modelling higher-order interactions using hypernetworks, where a link may connect more than two individuals. Here, we study collective cooperation through temporal hypernetworks, capturing the time-varying higher-order interactions in human societies. We find that temporal hypernetworks may promote cooperation compared with their static counterparts, and the traditional static pairwise network may underestimate the positive effect of local interactions on fostering cooperators. Moreover, temporal hypernetworks with sparse components and higher-order interactions can facilitate cooperation. Surprisingly, we report that when the scale of interactions is of the same order as population size, moderately small hyperlink sizes best facilitate cooperation. Our findings underscore the significant impact of real-world temporal higher-order interactions on the evolution of cooperation.

Abstract:The evolution of altruistic behavior among selfish individuals in human and animal societies is an evergreen topic, fascinating a lot of interest and attention from various research fields. We propose a preferential participation mechanism to study the evolution of cooperation in the frame of coevolutionary public goods games on complex networks. Each individual evaluates the productivity of links which it participates in and then adjusts the contribution allocations and interactions. Moreover, we consider players update their strategies according to cumulative return which contains the historical earnings. We also study the effects of time scale separation of strategy and structure by introducing asynchronous update probability. Results suggest that the cooperative behavior is enhanced by adaptive adjustment of strategy and structure. Our results may give some insights into better understanding of how the coevolution of strategy and structure influences individuals' cooperative behavior in the real world.

Abstract:Cooperative behavior that increases the fitness of others at a cost to oneself can be promoted by natural selection only in the presence of an additional mechanism. One such mechanism is based on population structure, which can lead to clustering of cooperating agents. Recently, the focus has turned to complex dynamical population structures such as social networks, where the nodes represent individuals and links represent social relationships. We investigate how the dynamics of a social network can change the level of cooperation in the network. Individuals either update their strategies by imitating their partners or adjust their social ties. For the dynamics of the network structure, a random link is selected and breaks with a probability determined by the adjacent individuals. Once it is broken, a new one is established. This linking dynamics can be conveniently characterized by a Markov chain in the configuration space of an ever-changing network of interacting agents. Our model can be analytically solved provided the dynamics of links proceeds much faster than the dynamics of strategies. This leads to a simple rule for the evolution of cooperation: The more fragile links between cooperating players and non-cooperating players are (or the more robust links between cooperators are), the more likely cooperation prevails. Our approach may pave the way for analytically investigating coevolution of strategy and structure.

Abstract:Strategies can significantly influence the performances of individual players and groups in supply networks. However, these strategies evolve over time. Thus, it is essential to probe the evolution of strategies in this context. This paper investigates the evolution of cooperation on supply networks focusing on the impacts of network topologies. Due to the difficulty in mapping the topological structures of large-scale supply networks, we introduce a topological model for supply networks. Then repeated prisoner's dilemma game is played on the resulting networks. The simulation results show that topological structures have close relevance to the cooperation level in the networks. Compared with homogeneous structures, heterogeneous structures are helpful to promote cooperation. In addition, strategy payoff and competition pressure are also involved with the evolution of cooperation. This work may offer a useful insight into understanding complex strategy behaviours in supply networks.

Abstract:Understanding how cooperative behaviours can emerge from competitive interactions is an open problem in biology and social sciences. While interactions are usually modelled as pairwise networks, the units of many real-world systems can also interact in groups of three or more. Here, we introduce a general framework to extend pairwise games to higher-order networks. By studying social dilemmas on hypergraphs with a tunable structure, we find an explosive transition to cooperation triggered by a critical number of higher-order games. The associated bistable regime implies that an initial critical mass of cooperators is also required for the emergence of prosocial behavior. Our results show that higher-order interactions provide a novel explanation for the survival of cooperation.

Abstract:Population structure is a key determinant in fostering cooperation among naturally self-interested individuals in microbial populations, social insect groups, and human societies. Traditional research has focused on static structures, and yet most real interactions are finite in duration and changing in time, forming a temporal network. This raises the question of whether cooperation can emerge and persist despite an intrinsically fragmented population structure. Here we develop a framework to study the evolution of cooperation on temporal networks. Surprisingly, we find that network temporality actually enhances the evolution of cooperation relative to comparable static networks, despite the fact that bursty interaction patterns generally impede cooperation. We resolve this tension by proposing a measure to quantify the amount of temporality in a network, revealing an intermediate level that maximally boosts cooperation. Our results open a new avenue for investigating the evolution of cooperation and other emergent behaviours in more realistic structured populations.

Abstract:In this work we study the behavior of classical two-person, two-strategies evolutionary games on networks embedded in a Euclidean two-dimensional space with different kinds of degree distributions and topologies going from regular to random, and to scale-free ones. Using several imitative microscopic dynamics, we study the evolution of global cooperation on the above network classes and find that specific topologies having a hierarchical structure and an inhomogeneous degree distribution, such as Apollonian and grid-based networks, are very conducive to cooperation. Spatial scale-free networks are still good for cooperation but to a lesser degree. Both classes of networks enhance average cooperation in all games with respect to standard random geometric graphs and regular grids by shifting the boundaries between cooperative and defective regions. These findings might be useful in the design of interaction structures that maintain cooperation when the agents are constrained to live in physical two-dimensional space.

Abstract:. Much of human cooperation remains an evolutionary riddle. Coevolutionary public goods games in structured populations are studied where players can change from an unproductive public goods game to a productive one, by evaluating the productivity of the public goods games. In our model, each individual participates in games organized by its neighborhood plus by itself. Coevolution here refers to an evolutionary process entailing both deletion of existing links and addition of new links between agents that accompanies the evolution of their strategies. Furthermore, we investigate the effects of time scale separation of strategy and structure on cooperation level. This study presents the following: Foremost, we observe that high cooperation levels in public goods interactions are attained by the entangled coevolution of strategy and structure. Presented results also confirm that the resulting networks show many features of real systems, such as cooperative behavior and hierarchical clustering. The heterogeneity of the interaction network is held responsible for the observed promotion of cooperation. We hope our work may offer an explanation for the origin of large-scale cooperative behavior among unrelated individuals.
Social norms and cooperation in higher-order networks

Abstract:Recent research has focused on understanding how cooperation is fostered through various mechanisms in cognitive settings, particularly through pairwise interactions. However, real-world interactions often extend beyond simple dyads, including multiple cliques with both pairwise and higher-order interactions. These complex interactions influence how individuals perceive and adapt their strategies based on social norms. We here introduce a model that explores the evolution of collective strategies and social norms within a heterogeneous environment, encompassing both dyadic and three-body interactions. We find that social norms play a crucial role in promoting cooperation in comparison to simply imitating the most successful neighbor. We also show that the rise of prosocial norms leads to increased cooperation across various social dilemmas, often resulting in shifts from defective to cooperative behavior. Additionally, we observe that a moderate level of information privacy helps sustaining prosocial norms and curtails antisocial tendencies, even in situations where mutual defection might seem advantageous. Our research thus offers insights into the evolution of cooperation through the lens of social norm diffusion in higher-order networks.

Abstract:Abstract Real networks are not only multi-layered yet also dynamic. The role of coordinated network evolution regarding dynamic multi-layer networks where both network and strategy evolution simultaneously show diverse interdependence by layers remains poorly addressed. Here, we propose a general and simple coevolution framework to analyze how coordination of different dynamical processes affects strategy propagation in synergistically evolving interdependent networks. The strategic feedback constitutes the main driving force of network evolution yet the inherent cross-layer self-optimization functions as its compensation. We show that these two ingredients often catalyze a better performance of network evolution in propagating cooperation. Coordinated network evolution may be a double-edged sword to cooperation and the network-adapting rate plays a crucial role in flipping its double-sided effect. It often economizes the cost and time consumption for driving the system to the full cooperation phase. Importantly, strongly coupled slow-tuned networks can outperform weakly coupled fast-regulated networks in solving social dilemmas, highlighting the fundamental advantages of coordinated network evolution and the importance of synergistic effect of dynamical processes in upholding human cooperation in multiplex networks.

Abstract:In microbial populations and human societies, the rule of nonlinear group interactions strongly affects the intraspecific evolutionary dynamics, which leads to the variation of the strategy composition eventually. The consequence of such variation may retroact to the rule of the interactions. This correlation indicates that the rule of nonlinear group interactions may coevolve with individuals' strategies. Here, we develop a model to investigate such coevolution in both well-mixed and structured populations. In our model, positive and negative correlations between the rule and the frequency of cooperators are considered, with local and global information. When the correlation refers to the global information, we show that in well-mixed populations, the coevolutionary outcomes cover the scenarios of defector dominance, coexistence, and bi-stability. Whenever the population structure is considered, its impact on the coevolutionary dynamics depends on the type of the correlation: with a negative (positive) correlation, population structure promotes (inhibits) the evolution of cooperation. Furthermore, when the correlation is based on the more accessible local information, we reveal that a negative correlation pushes cooperators into a harsh situation whereas a positive one lowers the barriers for cooperators to occupy the population. All our analytical results are validated by numerical simulations. Our results shed light on the power of the coevolution of nonlinear group interactions and evolutionary dynamics on generating various evolutionary outcomes, implying that the coevolutionary framework may be more appropriate than the traditional cases for understanding the evolution of cooperation in both structureless and structured populations.

Abstract:<p>It is a thorny problem to explain the origin and prosperity of cooperation in nature and society. Evolutionary games develop a solid theoretical framework for exploring the formation of cooperation. Considering the complexity of individual social relations and the diversity of game types, we investigate the spread of cooperation in an environment where each agent has the same probability to play the prisoner's dilemma and the snowdrift game in a two-layer square network. It is concluded that the introduction of multigame is conducive to the enhancement of cooperation, and the coupling between the two sublayers of the network is conditional in favoring cooperation. Moreover, the conclusions are further confirmed in the multigame model including the snowdrift game and the stag hunt game. Since this research framework is closer to reality, we hope that the discussion of the diffusion of cooperation here will provide inspiration for the future research of cooperation in the context of multiple complex environments.</p>

Abstract:We consider a population engaged in continuous public goods games. In our study, the lowest contributor in each game will be removed from the group, meanwhile new players will be added to the network to maintain the constant population size. Here, each new node would establish some connections with the existing ones in the network. We conclude that appropriate interaction numbers of each newcomer support the emergence and maintenance of cooperation for the continuous public goods game. Furthermore, the initial regular network has been driven to a slowly varying non-regular heterogeneous network which facilitates the evolution of cooperation. By investigating the resulting distribution of individual contributions, we show that provision of common goods can be fostered by permitting players target punishment on the lowest contributor in each continuous public goods game. We hope that our proposed model presents a feasible mechanism for promoting the emergence and evolution of cooperative behaviors.

Abstract:Recent research has identified interactions between networks as crucial for the outcome of evolutionary games taking place on them. While the consensus is that interdependence does promote cooperation by means of organizational complexity and enhanced reciprocity that is out of reach on isolated networks, we here address the question just how much interdependence there should be. Intuitively, one might assume the more the better. However, we show that in fact only an intermediate density of sufficiently strong interactions between networks warrants an optimal resolution of social dilemmas. This is due to an intricate interplay between the heterogeneity that causes an asymmetric strategy flow because of the additional links between the networks, and the independent formation of cooperative patterns on each individual network. Presented results are robust to variations of the strategy updating rule, the topology of interdependent networks, and the governing social dilemma, thus suggesting a high degree of universality.

Abstract:The evolution of cooperation on interdependent networks is arousing increasing concern based on the fact that more and more complex systems in the real-world have been proven to be organized in the form of multi-layer networks rather than single-layer networks. In this study, we examine the effects of self-organized interdependence on the evolution and stabilization of cooperation with social dilemmas depicted by the Prisoner's Dilemma Game (PDG) and the Public Goods Game (PGG) in which agents with the most common strategy have the chance to be rewarded proportionally to the fitness of corresponding agents belonging to the other network. We show that such a type-free rewarding rule, independent of game strategy, establishes a time-varying interdependence between two initially independent populations whereby cooperation is highly promoted as well as stabilized both in the two-player PDG and in the multi-player PGG. Majority-pressure based interdependence at stake has proven pretty neutral in regard to game strategy because it is contingent on strategy configuration rather than strategy itself, which thus gives birth to homologous communities, including cooperative as well as non-cooperative, and thereby an enhanced spatial reciprocity between non-identical networks is triggered. Of particular interest is the double-edged sword effect of network interdependence on cooperation although in most instances the heavier the interdependence, the better the evolution of cooperation. Furthermore, interpretations of the nontrivial relationship between cooperation and benchmark threshold measuring the strategy's local popularity highlight that rewarding the minimum majority is optimal for the evolution of cooperation in such scenario. Finally, we claim our observations are also quite robust with respect to mutation.

Abstract:The emergence of cooperation between unrelated individuals enables researchers to study how the collective cooperative behavior survives in a world where egoists could get more short-term benefits. The spatial multi-player games, which invoke interactions between individuals who are not directly linked by the interactive networks, are drawing more and more attention in exploring the evolution of cooperation. Here we address the evolutionary dynamics in infinite structured populations with discounted, linear, and synergistic group interactions. The five classical scenarios are recovered from the dynamics: (i) dominating defection, (ii) dominating cooperation, (iii) co-existence, (iv) bi-stability, and (v) neutral variants. For linear interactions, the evolutionary dynamics is equivalent to that in finite as well as the well-mixed counterparts, which can be achieved by a payoff matrix transformation, and it illustrates that the more neighbors there are, the harder the cooperators survive. Yet both cooperation and defection emerge easier in finite populations than in infinite for discounted and synergistic interactions. Counterintuitively, we find that the synergistic group interactions always raise cooperators׳ barriers to occupy the population with the increase of the number of neighbors in infinite structured populations. Our results go against the common belief that synergistic interactions are necessarily beneficial for the cooperative behavior.

Abstract:We live and cooperate in networks. However, links in networks only allow for pairwise interactions, thus making the framework suitable for dyadic games, but not for games that are played in larger groups. Here, we study the evolutionary dynamics of a public goods game in social systems with higher-order interactions. First, we show that the game on uniform hypergraphs corresponds to the replicator dynamics in the well-mixed limit, providing a formal theoretical foundation to study cooperation in networked groups. Second, we unveil how the presence of hubs and the coexistence of interactions in groups of different sizes affects the evolution of cooperation. Finally, we apply the proposed framework to extract the actual dependence of the synergy factor on the size of a group from real-world collaboration data in science and technology. Our work provides a way to implement informed actions to boost cooperation in social groups.
