Abstract:To combat the crisis of today’s synthetic polymers arising from unsustainable production and disposal, it is essential for the synthetic polymer community to reshape the current polymer industry with sustainable polymers. As an emerging class of sustainable polymers, the development of chemically depolymerizable polymers (CDPs), which can undergo closed-loop depolymerization/repolymerization cycles to reproduce virgin polymers without the loss of properties from recovered monomers, offers an ideal solution to preserve finite natural resources, provides a feasible solution to the end-of-life issue of polymer waste, and thereby establishes a circular materials economy. However, two grand key challenges have been encountered in the establishment of practically useful CDPs: how to balance polymerization and depolymerization ability and how to unify conflicted depolymerizability and physical properties. Accordingly, this critical review article presents our vision for summarizing feasible strategies to overcome the above two significant challenges and the design principles for constructing an ideal CDP by highlighting selected major progress made in this rapidly expanding field.
Opportunities and challenges for the development of polymer-based biomaterials and medical devices

Abstract:Biomaterials and medical devices are broadly used in the diagnosis, treatment, repair, replacement or enhancing functions of human tissues or organs. Although the living conditions of human beings have been steadily improved in most parts of the world, the incidence of major human's diseases is still rapidly growing mainly because of the growth and aging of population. The compound annual growth rate of biomaterials and medical devices is projected to maintain around 10% in the next 10 years; and the global market sale of biomaterials and medical devices is estimated to reach $400 billion in 2020. In particular, the annual consumption of polymeric biomaterials is tremendous, more than 8000 kilotons. The compound annual growth rate of polymeric biomaterials and medical devices will be up to 15-30%. As a result, it is critical to address some widespread concerns that are associated with the biosafety of the polymer-based biomaterials and medical devices. Our group has been actively worked in this direction for the past two decades. In this review, some key research results will be highlighted.

Abstract:The interface between material science and ophthalmic medicine is witnessing significant advances with the introduction of biopolymers in medical device fabrication. This review discusses the impact of biopolymers on the development of ophthalmic devices, such as intraocular lenses, stents, and various prosthetics. Biopolymers are emerging as superior alternatives due to their biocompatibility, mechanical robustness, and biodegradability, presenting an advance over traditional materials with respect to patient comfort and environmental considerations. We explore the spectrum of biopolymers used in ophthalmic devices and evaluate their physical properties, compatibility with biological tissues, and clinical performances. Specific applications in oculoplastic and orbital surgeries, hydrogel applications in ocular therapeutics, and polymeric drug delivery systems for a range of ophthalmic conditions were reviewed. We also anticipate future directions and identify challenges in the field, advocating for a collaborative approach between material science and ophthalmic practice to foster innovative, patient-focused treatments. This synthesis aims to reinforce the potential of biopolymers to improve ophthalmic device technology and enhance clinical outcomes.

Abstract:Biodegradable materials, including natural and synthetic polymers and hydrolyzable metals, constitute the main components of temporary, implantable medical devices. Besides the intrinsic properties of the materials, the most critical factor determining the successful clinical outcome of implantable and degradable devices is the host response, particularly the immune response, which largely depends on the material features and degradation mechanisms. In this Review, we first survey the state of the art in terms of materials options for use in biodegradable medical devices, focusing on degradation mechanisms and their control. In particular, we highlight silk, which is emerging as an important polymer, owing to its mechanical robustness, bioactive component sequestration, degradability without problematic metabolic products and biocompatibility. We then discuss the host response to these biodegradable materials in terms of dynamic tissue–implant interfaces. Next, we examine the clinical translation of three leading biodegradable material systems — natural and synthetic biodegradable polymers and biodegradable metals — and the related challenges in the context of orthopaedic fixation devices, cardiovascular stents and biodegradable electronic devices. Looking to the future, we propose updated material design strategies to improve the clinical outcomes for these biodegradable medical devices.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing (AM), commonly referred to as 3D printing, is viewed as a method of rapid prototyping and an alternative to traditional manufacturing. Recently, there has been an increasing interest on sustainability of AM approaches and the materials that can be used. Advances in both AM technologies and polymer chemistry present multiple pathways for AM to become more sustainable, such as raw material sourcing, green synthesis, and end-of-life processing. This review provides a brief overview of AM techniques for polymers, sustainable sourcing of polymers in AM, and the advances of degradable/recyclable polymers in AM. It also provides a perspective of the potential role of AM in economic and chemical circularity, as well as opportunities for digital manufacturing for the future. Biodegradable materials for medical or other biological applications are beyond the scope of this review.

Abstract:As materials engineered to interact with biological systems for medical purposes, polymeric biomedical materials have revolutionized and are indispensable in modern healthcare. However, aging populations and improving healthcare standards worldwide have resulted in ever-increasing demands for such biomaterials. Currently, many clinically used polymers are derived from nonrenewable petroleum resources, thus spurring the need for exploring alternatives for the next generation of sustainable biomaterials. Other than biomass, this Perspective also spotlights carbon dioxide and postuse plastics as viable resources potentially suitable for biomaterial production. For each alternative feedstock, key recent developments and practical considerations are discussed, including emerging biomaterial applications, possible feedstock sources, and hindrances toward translation and practical adoption. Other than replacements for petroleum-derived polymers, we explore how utilization of these alternatives capitalizes on their intrinsic physiochemical and material properties to achieve their desired therapeutic effects. We hope that this Perspective can stimulate further development in sustainable biomaterials to achieve practical therapeutic benefits as part of a circular materials economy with minimal environmental impact.

Abstract:Polymers are indispensable for modern healthcare and hospitals. However, their utilization led to enormous drawbacks such as waste. This study discusses current strategies and future possibilities for the sustainable usage of polymers in hospitals in order to obtain a circular utilization of plastics in healthcare applications. Polymers are applied extensively in the healthcare sector and enable a variety of different applications. In addition to packaging and personal protective equipment, a large number of medical devices are also coated with or consist of polymers. Today's medicine is therefore inconceivable without these materials. However, the huge challenge is to design these polymers more sustainable and to find new possibilities for the future of medicine with polymers. This study therefore highlights potential ways, in how polymers applied in the healthcare sector and in particular in hospitals can be utilized in a circular manner, but also indicates what risks and challenges this entails.

Abstract:Rotational moulding is a unique low-shear process used to manufacture hollow parts. The process is an excellent process method for batch processing, minimal waste and stress-free parts. However, the process has drawbacks such as long cycle times, gas dependency and a limited palette of materials relative to other process methods. This review aimed to shed light on the current state-of-the-art research contributing towards sustainability in rotational moulding. The scope of this review broadly assessed all areas of the process such as material development, process adaptations and development, modelling, simulation and contributions towards applications carving a more sustainable society. The PRISMA literature review method was adopted, finding that the majority of publications focus on material development, specifically on the use of waste, fillers, fibres and composites as a way to improve sustainability. Significant focus on biocomposites and natural fibres highlighted the strong research interest, while recyclate studies appeared to be less explored to date. Other research paths are process modification, modelling and simulation, motivated to increase energy efficiency, reduction in scrap and attempts to reduce cycle time with models. An emerging research interest in rotational moulding is the contribution towards the hydrogen economy, particularly type IV hydrogen vessels.

Abstract:Since the first report of 3D printed biodegradable structures by stereolithography, vat photopolymerization has shown great potential in the fabrication of medical implants and devices. Despite its superior printing quality and manufacturing speed, the development of biodegradable devices by this technique remains challenging. This results from the conflicting viscosity requirements for the printing resins, i.e., low viscosity is required for high‐resolution 3D printing, whereas high viscosity is often needed to provide high mechanical strength. Recently emerging photopolymerization‐based 3D printing techniques, including heat‐assisted digital light processing (DLP) and volumetric printing, have brought new hope to the field. With its tolerance to high viscosity resins, heat‐assisted DLP enables the fabrication of complex, personalizes architectures from biodegradable photopolymers that are not printable by conventional printing techniques. On the other hand, volumetric printing, which abandons the layer‐by‐layer printing principle and thus circumvents the dependence on low viscosity resins, could be highly beneficial for the 3D printing of biodegradable devices. This perspective evaluates the key challenges associated with biodegradable photopolymers used in the 3D printing of medical implants and devices. One focuses on their chemical structures and physical properties and discusses future directions offered by these emerging techniques. The key challenges associated with biodegradable photopolymers for 3D printed medical implants and devices are analyzed, and the new opportunities brought by recently emerged techniques in particular heat‐assisted vat photopolymerization and volumetric 3D printing are explored. An outlook on the possible future research directions involving material design and technical progress is also provided.

Abstract:Natural polymers are widely known and extensively studied, especially for applications involving biomaterials and medical devices. Such a market has a high-growth potential, associated with the increase in people's average lifetime and the crescent concern for health and prevention by the population worldwide. In spite of this, few products within the medical field made from natural polymers are manufactured on large scale and commercialized. This review aims to provoke a reflection on why there is a missing chain link between the study of these materials and their large-scale production. If there are plenty of research papers published about biopolymers, why are they not available in the market? Initially, we present general statistics about the most commonly studied natural polymers and their applications in the medical field. We then review and analyze the three main processes (in our opinion) involving the production of biomaterials: 3D printing, drying, and sterilization. We present a description of the main processing methods, focusing on the major difficulties and bottlenecks that these processes may present during their use and scale-up. Our main conclusion is that more effort and focus are needed from scientists, in particular chemical and material engineers, to integrate material science with unit operations and close the gap between research and industrial production of natural polymers. This way, we can finally bring decades of development in biopolymers to real-life applications.

Abstract:Polymers from Renewable Resources, Ahead of Print. The ongoing climate changes, high air and noise pollution have significant impact on humans' health. This influence is especially visible in otolaryngology, which focuses on respiratory and hearing systems disfunctions. However, even though surgeries are done in response to diseases related to climate changes, they also have a negative impact on the environment, mostly connected with the inherence of single-use fossil fuel derived polymers. This leads to a self-perpetuating emission of greenhouse gases, as human beings developed a lot of synthetic materials to combat climate change derived dysfunctions, which itself endangers human health in a chaotic circular chain. Mitigating issues arising from using synthetic plastics would be possible by imparting biodegradable polymers from renewable resources. Nowadays, sustainable polymers are adopted mostly in emerging fields of medicine, such as 3D printing, tissue engineering of drug delivery systems. Sustainable polymers are particularly useful in otolaryngology, e.g., in the form of nasal drug eluting stents or bone substitutions. Nevertheless, some limitations in wider usage of renewable polymers in surgery should also be underlined, mainly related to lack of legislation, clinical considerations, and also inadequate materials' circularity. Herein we briefly overviewed commonly used polymers in general surgery and otolaryngology, defined the trends in sustainable polymer usage in these fields, and highlighted the limitations in renewable polymers applications together with possible solutions. What this short review emphasizes, is that the significant increase in interest and demand for sustainable solutions will revolutionize the future of clinical treatments, where contribution to climate change and waste management will be centered in decision making protocols.

Abstract:We envision this work to assist researchers and medical device developers (beside other stakeholders) to better understand biomaterial‐based medical device development and its approval process proposed by the new MDR and IVDR in the European Union, as more complex biomaterials emerge, with the MDR reflecting the progress in biomaterial discoveries. Additionally, insufficient international harmonization in regulatory laws and poor‐quality data reporting contribute to the problem. This review describes the possible reasons for a slowing biomaterials translational trend observed over the past decades, focusing on the European Market, and suggests a feasible approach for biomaterials‐based medical device translation into the clinic. Suitable solutions to upgrade biomaterial translation to the clinic have not yet been provided by the field: no additional hurdles should be imposed for researchers, clinicians, the medical device industry, and insurance companies, which all should collaborate on bringing innovative solutions to patients. The new MDR and IVDR represent a substantial advancement in ensuring patient safety and reflect a major step forward in healthcare. However, they should not constrain innovation in biomaterials‐based medical device development. Incorporating reverse engineering from patient safety and a 'safe by design' (SbD) strategy early into medical device development might lead to a smoother and successful approval process. A solid R&D phase, with an emphasis on device safety and performance assessment, is fundamental to ensure an effective transition into the clinic. We offer an overview of the recently implemented regulations on medical devices and in vitro diagnostics across the EU, describing a shifting paradigm in the field of biomaterials discovery. As more complex biomaterials emerge, suitable regulations will be necessary to keep bringing safe and well‐performing medical solutions to patients.

Abstract:The aerospace industry has been benefiting from the utilization of polymer materials since fibre reinforced polymer composites (FRPC) offers high performances at low densities compared to metals. In a way, FRPC innovated lightweight matter engineering and provided aviation as a public transport method. Since their first integration into structural parts, FRPC experiences an exponential growth over years and receives a special interest from manufacturing engineering. While FRPC today is a major focus in engineering, design of polymer matrix relies on polymer chemistry. However, aircraft materials are facing a pressing issue related to sustainability, since their environmental footprint is at alarming level. In this review, commercial thermosetting polymer composites employed in aircraft structures will be exhibited from chemistry perspective by depicting starting products and curing reactions. The potential of chemistry to architect next‐generation sustainable FRPC for structural parts by means of utilization of sustainable feedstock, energy‐efficient processing and recycling will be deciphered. Abstract:Biomedical polymers play a key role in preventing, diagnosing, and treating diseases, showcasing a wide range of applications. Their unique advantages, such as rich source, good biocompatibility, and excellent modifiability, make them ideal biomaterials for drug delivery, biomedical imaging, and tissue engineering. However, conventional biomedical polymers suffer from poor degradation in vivo, increasing the risks of bioaccumulation and potential toxicity. To address these issues, degradable biomedical polymers can serve as an alternative strategy in biomedicine. Degradable biomedical polymers can efficiently relieve bioaccumulation in vivo and effectively reduce patient burden in disease management. This review comprehensively introduces the classification and properties of biomedical polymers and the recent research progress of degradable biomedical polymers in various diseases. Through an in-depth analysis of their classification, properties, and applications, we aim to provide strong guidance for promoting basic research and clinical translation of degradable biomedical polymers.

Abstract:Polymer sustainability is a pressing concern in today's world driven by the increasing demand for environmentally friendly materials. This review paper provides a comprehensive overview of eco-friendly approaches towards enhancing the sustainability of polymers. It synthesized recent research and developments in various areas such as green polymer synthesis methods, biodegradable polymers, recycling technologies, and emerging sustainable alternatives. The environmental impact of traditional polymer production processes and the importance of adopting greener alternatives were critically examined. The review delved into the advancements in polymer recycling technologies like mechanical, chemical, and biological processes aimed at minimizing plastic waste and promoting a circular economy. The innovative approaches such as upcycling, hybrid methods etc., which offer promising solutions for addressing plastic pollution and achieving long-term sustainability goals were also analyzed. Abstract:BACKGROUND Developments in image reconstruction techniques for planar imaging, also known as enhanced planar processing (EPP), enable the possibility to reconstruct planar scintigraphic images with low count statistics, providing the opportunity to reduce image acquisition time. In this study, the performance of EPP for oncologic half-time bone scintigraphy images was evaluated. METHODS The EPP software was evaluated for different imaging conditions using standardized phantom experiments. Additionally, 51 patients with prostate and breast cancer were prospectively included and underwent bone scintigraphy using a standard and half-time protocol. Independent reading was performed on three image types (standard, half-time non-processed, and half-time EPP) by three observers, scoring the number and anatomical location of lesions, image quality, and diagnostic confidence by which the definitive diagnosis was made. RESULTS EPP images had improved contrast and lower noise levels compared to the non-processed half-time images. It was determined that EPP images acquired at double scan speed had similar image quality to the standard non-processed images. There was substantial agreement with respect to diagnosis and diagnostic confidence based on all three image types between the observers. Image quality in the EPP images was higher with respect to the non-processed half-time images, and was comparable to the standard images. CONCLUSIONS Diagnostic confidence was not affected by reduction in image acquisition time. There was substantial agreement between all three observers with respect to the diagnosis provided in all three image types. Subjective and objective image quality improved when half-time images were processed with EPP software.
Characterization of Biodegradable Polymers for Porous Structure: Further Steps toward Sustainable Plastics

Abstract:Plastic pollution poses a significant environmental challenge, necessitating the investigation of bioplastics with reduced end-of-life impact. This study systematically characterizes four promising bioplastics—polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT), polybutylene succinate (PBS), poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV), and polylactic acid (PLA). Through a comprehensive analysis of their chemical, thermal, and mechanical properties, we elucidate their structural intricacies, processing behaviors, and potential morphologies. Employing an environmentally friendly process utilizing supercritical carbon dioxide, we successfully produced porous materials with microcellular structures. PBAT, PBS, and PLA exhibit closed-cell morphologies, while PHBV presents open cells, reflecting their distinct overall properties. Notably, PBAT foam demonstrated an average porous area of 1030.86 μm2, PBS showed an average porous area of 673 μm2, PHBV displayed open pores with an average area of 116.6 μm2, and PLA exhibited an average porous area of 620 μm2. Despite the intricacies involved in correlating morphology with material properties, the observed variations in pore area sizes align with the findings from chemical, thermal, and mechanical characterization. This alignment enhances our understanding of the morphological characteristics of each sample. Therefore, here, we report an advancement and comprehensive research in bioplastics, offering deeper insights into their properties and potential morphologies with an easy sustainable foaming process. The alignment of the process with sustainability principles, coupled with the unique features of each polymer, positions them as environmentally conscious and versatile materials for a range of applications.

Abstract:Medical devices are instrumental in servicing the healthcare sector and promoting well-being in modern societies. However, their production and use contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, thus causing indirect harm to global health. With a share of approximately 4.4% of global emissions, the healthcare sector exhales CO2 throughout its value chain; sources of this range from direct electricity consumption and water heating in healthcare facilities to the supply chains delivering healthcare services and products. Within this context, the environmental impact of medical devices is present across their production, distribution, usage, and eventual disposal. Each step in the lifecycle of medical devices consumes energy and natural resources, and the end product, after its often single use, is discarded, generating plastic or electronic waste. This study aims to present the key findings from a scoping review of academic research on the topic, which focuses on reducing the environmental impact of medical devices and equipment. The review, conducted according to the PRISMA checklist for scoping reviews, examined 41 studies and categorised them based on the lifecycle stages of medical devices (design and development, manufacturing, usage, and end of life) and the sustainability aspects (economic, environmental, and social) discussed by the authors. The findings suggest that while efforts have been made to enhance economic and environmental sustainability throughout the design, development, and usage of medical devices, there is still room for improvement in mitigating their ecological impact at the end of their lifecycle and maximising their social impact by design.

Abstract:Electronic products enhance our lives and bring change in almost every field including communications, entertainment, and healthcare. However, the fast-growing surplus of electronic waste has become a serious challenge to the environment: the majority of these toxic materials are deposited directly into landfills or incinerated because recycling is difficult and/or expensive. Electronic devices manufactured with biocompatible and biodegradable polymers are in demand because they are environmentally safe, of low cost, of potentially large volume, and are disposable. In addition, biocompatible and biodegradable electronics may enable the use of electronic devices in implantable biomedical applications. This review is focused on polymer materials, both natural and synthetic, that are utilized in biodegradable and/or biocompatible electronic devices as substrates, dielectrics, conductors, or semiconductors. Specific application examples are highlighted, such as biodegradable electronic devices, implantable medical devices, and edible sensors.
