Abstract:The sluggish kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) as well as costly production of current Pt/C catalysts limit the practical application of Zn-air battery (ZAB). It is challenging to synthesize an ideal ORR catalyst with intriguing features, including a conductive network, a directed pathway for charge transfer, and abundant active sites such as bimetallic alloy nanoparticles. In this work, FeCo alloys are successfully combined due to the uniform distribution of encapsulated Fe and surface-bound Co by means of electrospinning and pyrolysis. As a result, the prepared FeCo/N-CNFs have an exceptional ORR performance (E1/2 = 0.88 V, j = 5.20 mA cm−2) that considerably outperforms Pt/C (E1/2 = 0.85 V, j = 4.75 mA cm−2). In addition, ZAB based on FeCo/N-CNFs display a superior peak power density (356.23 mW cm−2) than Pt/C-ZAB (299.29 mW cm−2). The high degree of graphitization from FeCo alloy nanoparticles, the directed charge transfer channel from a one-dimensional nanofiber structure, and the interaction between M-NX and pyridine N/graphite N species all contribute to the exceptional electrocatalytic performance.

Abstract:The development of non-precious metal catalysts (NPMC) for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) is a hot topic for fuel cells and zinc-air batteries (ZABs). This study reports a method to obtain efficient Fe-N-C ORR catalysts via doping dicyandiamide and iron porphyrins on the pyrolyzed MOF-5 and followed pyrolysis to achieve the anchoring of Fe-N x active sites onto square-shaped structure carbon material. The prepared Fe-N-C catalysts exhibit excellent ORR performance under an alkaline environment with half-wave potentials up to 0.903 V, which is 57 mV higher than that of Pt/C under the same conditions. It has excellent stability and methanol resistance. Moreover, this catalyst exhibited high specific capacity (821.8 mAh g -1 ) and power density (111.7 mW cm -2 ) in assembled ZAB, and excellent charging and discharging stability.

Abstract:In the present area of electrochemistry, due to the scarcity and unavailability of precious metals, it is a great challenge and a new opportunity to develop bifunctional electrocatalysts for zinc-air batteries (ZABs) with high activity, low cost and strong durability. In this study, an excellent electrocatalyst (Fe@MoNi/NCP-800) for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was successfully prepared by pyrolyzing Fe2+ ion doped bimetallic Mo-Ni supramolecular coordination polymer (SCP) at 800 ℃ with carbon paper (CP) as self-supporting material. Owing to its unique FeNi alloy nanotube structure supported by the in situ formed MoN and the trimetallic synergies, the as-obtained electrocatalyst showed superior catalytic performance to that of commercial Pt/C half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.846 V and RuO2 overpotential (η) of 300 mV. In addition, the ZABs prepared with Fe@MoNi/NCP-800 has a small charge-discharge voltage gap of 0.85 V, high energy efficiency of 35.25% and excellent cycle performance (308 h) at 10 mA cm−2. This research provides a very promising transition-metal alloy multifunctional electrocatalyst for the development of ZABs with high efficiency and duration, and a meaningful idea for the future rational design and synthesis of new coordination polymer or supramolecular coordination polymer-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:A low-cost and scalable method has been developed to synthesize Fe-decorated N-rich carbon electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) based on pyrolysis of metal carbonyls containing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Such a method simultaneously optimizes the Fe-related active sites and the porous structure of the catalysts. Accordingly, the best-performing Fe-NC-900-M catalyst shows excellent ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.91 V vs. RHE, exceeding that of the 40% Pt/C catalyst in alkaline media. Furthermore, the zinc-air batteries constructed with Fe-NC-900-M as the cathode catalyst exhibit high open-circuit voltage (1.5 V) and peak power density (271 mW cm-2), and outperform most zinc-air batteries with noble-metal free ORR catalysts.
Flexible, Porous, and Metal-Heteroatom-Doped Carbon Nanofibers as Efficient ORR Electrocatalysts for Zn-Air Battery

Abstract:Developing an efficient and durable oxygen reduction electrocatalyst is critical for clean-energy technology, such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries. In this study, we developed a facile strategy for the preparation of flexible, porous, and well-dispersed metal-heteroatom-doped carbon nanofibers by direct carbonization of electrospun Zn/Co-ZIFs/PAN nanofibers (Zn/Co-ZIFs/PAN). The obtained Zn/Co and N co-doped porous carbon nanofibers carbonized at 800 °C (Zn/Co-N@PCNFs-800) presented a good flexibility, a continuous porous structure, and a superior oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic activity to that of commercial 20 wt% Pt/C, in terms of its onset potential (0.98 V vs. RHE), half-wave potential (0.89 V vs. RHE), and limiting current density (- 5.26 mA cm-2). In addition, we tested the suitability and durability of Zn/Co-N@PCNFs-800 as the oxygen cathode for a rechargeable Zn-air battery. The prepared Zn-air batteries exhibited a higher power density (83.5 mW cm-2), a higher specific capacity (640.3 mAh g-1), an excellent reversibility, and a better cycling life than the commercial 20 wt% Pt/C + RuO2 catalysts. This design strategy of flexible porous non-precious metal-doped ORR electrocatalysts obtained from electrospun ZIFs/polymer nanofibers could be extended to fabricate other novel, stable, and easy-to-use multi-functional electrocatalysts for clean-energy technology.

Abstract:Heteroatoms-doped Fe-N-C electrocatalysts are considered as one of the most promising candidates to replace Pt-based materials for overcoming the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for many energy conversion devices. Herein, a very facile strategy to prepare Fe-P/N-C hybrid through pyrolyzing Fe/P co-doped zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) is rationally designed. Characterizations shows that the Fe/P atoms are uniformly embedded in the N-doped carbon framework. It shows obviously improved ORR performance with more positive half-wave potential (E1/2 = 0.88 V) in alkaline media. When assembled as cathode catalyst in a zinc-air battery, it delivers a peak power density of 157.5 mW cm-2. This work provides a facile and novel design strategy to obtain highly active ORR catalysts for Zn-air batteries.

Abstract:Iron-based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts have been the focus of research, and iron sources play an important role for the preparation of efficient ORR catalysts. Here, we successfully use LiFePO4 as ideal sources of Fe and P to construct the heteroatom doped Fe-based carbon materials. The obtained Fe-N-P co-doped coral-like carbon nanotube arrays encapsulated Fe2P catalyst (C-ZIF/LFP) shows very high half-wave potential of 0.88 V in alkaline electrolytes toward ORR, superior to Pt/C (0.85 V), and also presents a high half-wave potential of 0.74 V in acidic electrolytes, comparable to Pt/C (0.8 V). When further applied into a home-made Zn-air battery as cathode, a peak power density of 140 mW·cm2 is reached, exceeds commercial Pt/C (110 mWcm2). Besides, it also presents exceptional durability and methanol resistance compared with Pt/C. Noticeably, the preparation method of such a high-performance catalyst is simple and easy to optimize, suitable for the large-scale production. What's more, it opens up a more sustainable development scenario to reduce the hazardous wastes such as LiFePO4 by directly using them for preparing high-performance ORR catalysts.

Zn-Induced Synthesis of Porous Fe-N,S-C Electrocatalyst with Iron-Based Active Sites Containing Sulfides, Oxides and Nitrides for Efficient Oxygen Reduction and Zinc-Air Batteries

Abstract:There is an urgent need to design and synthesize non-noble metal electrocatalysts (NNMEs) for the replacement of platinum-based electrocatalysts to enhance the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for Zn–air batteries and fuel cells. Herein, Fe-N,S-C materials were fabricated through two steps: first, reprecipitating hemin by adjusting the pH and, then, decorating it with melamine and cysteine in the presence of Zn2+. The resulting Fe-N,S-C-950 (Zn) was prepared after pyrolysis at 950 °C. Using this method, abundant iron-based active species with good dispersion were obtained. The fabrication of more micropores in Fe-N,S-C-950 (Zn) plays a positive role in the improvement of ORR activity. On comparison, Fe-N,S-C-950 (Zn) outperforms Fe-N,S-C-950 and Fe-N-C-950 (Zn) with respect to the ORR due to its larger specific surface area, porous structure, multiple iron-based active sites and N- and S-doped C. Fe-N,S-C-950 (Zn) achieves outstanding ORR performances, including a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.844 V and 0.715 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in 0.1 M KOH and 0.1 M HClO4 solution, respectively. In addition, Fe-N,S-C-950 (Zn) shows an outstanding Zn–air battery performance with an open-circuit voltage (OCV) of 1.450 V and a peak power density of 121.9 mW cm−2, which is higher than that of 20 wt% Pt/C. As a result, the as-prepared electrocatalyst in this work shows the development of the Zn-assisted strategy combined with the assembly of porphyrins as NNMEs for the enhancement of the ORR in both alkaline and acidic solutions.

Abstract:It is an ongoing challenge to fabricate nonprecious oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts that can be comparable to or exceed the efficiency of platinum. A highly active non-platinum self-supporting Fe-N/C catalyst has been developed through the pyrolysis of a new type of precursor of iron coordination complex, in which 1,4-bis(1H-1,3,7,8-tetraazacyclopenta(1)phenanthren-2-yl)benzene (btcpb) functions as a ligand complexing Fe(II) ions. The optimal catalyst pyrolyzed at 700 °C (Fe-N/C-700) shows the best ORR activity with a half-wave potential (E1/2 ) of 840 mV versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in 0.1 m KOH, which is more positive than that of commercial Pt/C (E1/2 : 835 mV vs RHE). Additionally, the Fe-N/C-700 catalyst also exhibits high ORR activity in 0.1 m HClO4 with the onset potential and E1/2 comparable to those of the Pt/C catalyst. Notably, the Fe-N/C-700 catalyst displays superior durability (9.8 mV loss in 0.1 m KOH and 23.6 mV loss in 0.1 m HClO4 for E1/2 after 8000 cycles) and better tolerance to methanol than Pt/C. Furthermore, the Fe-N/C-700 catalyst can be used for fabricating the air electrode in Zn-air battery with a specific capacity of 727 mA hg-1 at 5 mA cm-2 and a negligible voltage loss after continuous operation for 110 h.

Abstract:The construction of efficient and durable electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a challenge for rechargeable Zn-air batteries (ZABs). Bimetallic phosphide (NiCoP) holds considerable promise as a bifunctional catalyst. Here, an efficient NiCoP-based bifunctional electrocatalyst was fabricated using PCN-222-assembled organophosphorus complexes, specifically 1,1-bis(diphenylphosphine)ferrocene (DPPF). These DPPF complexes serve as sources of phosphorus and metals, undergoing in-situ conversion into Fe-doped NiCoP nanoparticles (Fe-NiCoP) while simultaneously constructing a heteroatom-doped carbon matrix (NPC). The final catalytic structure, composed of ultra-fine Fe-NiCoP nanoparticles confined within the NPC, exhibits superior bifunctional electrocatalytic activity (with a ΔE gap of 0.69 V between OER and ORR) and exceptional stability. In-situ Raman spectroscopy and DFT calculations reveal that the high performance arises from the synergistic effect of Fe-NiCoP and NPC, where Fe-NiCoP triggers the catalytic activity of the attached NPC. The calculated active site is identified as the C atom near the N atom on the NPC, lowering the potential barrier for O-containing intermediate compounds and enhancing the catalytic performance. In addition, NPC protects the Fe-NiCoP core from oxidation during battery cycles, allowing ZABs equipped with this catalyst to achieve high power density and long-term cycling performance.

Abstract:Developing porous carbon-based non-precious-metal catalysts for an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a suitable approach to significantly reduce the costs of fuel cells or metal-air batteries. Herein, interconnected hierarchically porous carbon nanofibers simultaneously doped with nitrogen and iron (HP-Fe-N/CNFs) were fabricated by facile pyrolysis of polypyrrole-coated electrospun polystyrene/FeCl3 fibers. The obtained carbon nanofibers have a high specific surface area (569.6 m2/g) and large pore volume (1.00 cm3/ g) as well as effective doping of N and Fe. Benefiting from the improved mass transfer and utilization of active sites attributed to interconnected hierarchical porous structures, HP-Fe-N/CNFs display excellent ORR catalytic activity in alkaline media, with a comparable onset potential and half-wave potential but superior selectivity, stability, and tolerance against methanol to commercial 30 wt % Pt/C. Particularly, when applied in an assembled Zn-air battery, HP-Fe-N/CNFs outperform 30 wt % Pt/C in power density and long-term stability, explicitly showing their promising practical application.

Abstract:Reasonable design and construction of efficient and cost-effective oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts are vital for promoting the practical application of zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Herein, we reported a one-pot self-assemble approach in combination with pyrolysis to prepare nanocomposite electrocatalyst comprised of atomically dispersed Fe-Nx sites and uniformly implanted FeP nanoparticles, which supported on N, P co-doped porous carbon nanosheets (denoted as 2D-FeP@FeNC-900). The 2D-FeP@FeNC-900 exhibits large specific surface area and hierarchical porous structure, along with unique incorporation of FeP, Fe-Nx and N, P co-doping provides abundant active sites and favorable synergistic effect, imparting 2D-FeP@FeNC-900 superior kinetic and electrocatalytic activity towards ORR. Meanwhile, the 2D-FeP@FeNC-900 displays an advantage of methanol-resistance over benchmark Pt/C catalyst. Moreover, the ZABs with 2D-FeP@FeNC-900 achieve superior discharge power density of 260 mW cm−2, specific capacitance of 803.7 mA h g−1, and excellent cyclic stability (when combined with RuO2) of over 130 h, surpassing those of Pt/C counterpart. This work provides an effective and generalizable strategy for engineering metal-compound and atomic-sites on dual-doped nanocarbon matrix for sustainable energy conversation and storage devices.

Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction Reaction by the Pd/Fe-N-C Catalyst and Application in a Zn–Air Battery

Abstract:Developing a non-platinum catalyst that effectively catalyzes the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is highly significant for metal–air batteries. Metal and nitrogen co-doped carbons (M-N-Cs) have emerged as alternative candidates to platinum. In this work, dual-metal Pd/Fe-N-C electrocatalysts were synthesized by the one-step pyrolysis of phytic acid, melamine, and Pd/Fe-based salts. The Pd/Fe-N-C catalyst exhibited a good catalytic ability during the ORR process and outperformed the commercial Pt/C catalyst as regards mass activity, catalytic stability, and methanol tolerance. It was found that Pd-Nx is the active center, and the synergistic effect from the Fe component introduction endowed the Pd/Fe-N-C with an excellent catalytic performance towards the ORR. When assembled into a Zn–air battery, its specific capacity was ~775 mAh gZn−1. Meanwhile, the peak power density could reach 3.85 W mgPd−1, i.e., 3.4 times that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst (1.13 W mgPt−1). This implies that the Pd/Fe-N-C catalyst has potential applications in metal–air batteries.

FRONT ADAPTIVE OPTICS IN MULTIPHOTON MICROSCOPY

Abstract:The accurate focusing of ultrashort laser pulses is important in multiphoton microscopy, in order to achieve high resolution imaging in biological specimens. Recent advances have shown the improvements to imaging through the inclusion of an adaptive optic element in the microscope. Using a device such as a liquid crystal spatial light modulator or a deformable mirror to modify the wavefront of the incident ultrafast laser beam, it is possible to nullify aberrations induced by the specimen, leading to improved resolution and efficiency [1]. In an alternative configuration, the adaptive optical element may be used to shape the incident beam in the spectral domain to compensate for any dispersion in the optical system and minimise the pulse duration at the focus, leading to an improved fluorescence yield. Such systems however only provide the same correction of group velocity dispersion across the whole beam. Another phenomenon that can detrimentally affect focussing of ultrashort pulses is pulse front distortion, which arises when the group delay varies across the beam. The effect of this is that pulse components in different parts of the beam arrive at the focus at different times, leading to a temporal spreading of the pulse. In order to overcome this problem we demonstrate the new concept of pulse front adaptive optics as a further mechanism for control in a multiphoton microscope [2,3]. A deformable mirror and a spatial light modulator are operated in concert to give control over the incident pulse fronts (contours of constant intensity in space and time within an ultrashort pulse). By this approach, pulse fronts can be generated which are spatially variant across the beam. Rotationally symmetric time delays in the pulse front are of particular interest in multiphoton microscopy since they are equivalent to the deformation of ultrashort pulses caused by many lenses. By varying the amount of pulse distortion in the incident beam using adaptive optics, we demonstrate an enhancement in the measured fluorescence from a two photon microscope with non-uniform pulse fronts. This method will be beneficial to maintain short pulses at the focus of a microscope when focussing through dispersive specimens or using ultrashort (10s of femtoseconds) pulses.

Abstract:The development of high active and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts for metal-air batteries remains a challenge due to the slow reaction kinetics both in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, a trimetallic electrocatalyst with efficient ORR and OER bifunctional catalytic activities has been fabricated by a one-step high-temperature pyrolysis methodology. The catalyst shows higher catalytic ORR and OER performance than the commercial 46% TKK platinum carbon and IrO 2 catalysts, respectively, with a half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.912 V vs. RHE for ORR in 0.1 M KOH and an overpotential of 250 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 for OER in 1 M KOH. Moreover, the carbon encapsulation ensures the high stability of FeZrRu/C catalysts both for both ORR and OER electrocatalysis. The Zn–air batteries using the obtained FeZrRu/C catalysts exhibit a power density as high as 221.34 mW/cm 2 . This work provides a universal strategy for the synthesis of high-performance trimetal-doped bifunctional electrocatalysts for metal-air batteries and fuel cells.

Abstract:The spatial immobilization of PtPdFeCoNi HEA NPs and multimetallic single atoms on 3D hierarchically ordered porous nitrogen‐doped carbon (HOPNC) skeleton, as well as the successful construction of interconnected channels for fast mass transfer, render the as‐prepared PtPdFeCoNi/HOPNC superior bifunctional electrocatalytic performances for both ORR and OER and excellent performance for zinc–air battery. Developing efficient oxygen electrocatalysts with low cost, high catalytic activity, and robust stability remains a formidable challenge for rechargeable zinc–air batteries (ZABs). Herein, highly dispersed ultrasmall PtPdFeCoNi high‐entropy alloy nanoparticles with a size of ≈ 2 nm and randomly distributed multimetallic single atoms spatially immobilized on the 3D hierarchically ordered porous nitrogen‐doped carbon skeleton (denoted as PtPdFeCoNi/HOPNC) are successfully synthesized via ultra‐rapid Joule heating process. The spatial immobilization on 3D HOPNC skeleton is the key to the high dispersion of multi‐active sites of oxygen electrocatalysts, and the formed hierarchical pore structure is conducive to the successful construction of the rapid mass transfer channel. As a result, the as‐prepared PtPdFeCoNi/HOPNC exhibits a positive half‐wave potential of 0.866 V versus RHE for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), a low overpotential of 310 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and low Tafel slopes for both ORR and OER. Furthermore, ZAB using PtPdFeCoNi/HOPNC as bifunctional oxygen catalysts exhibits excellent rate performances and superior cycling stability, surpassing that of a commercial Pt/C‐RuO2 mixture. The spatial immobilization strategy of HOPNC provides a new idea for the design and synthesis of efficient catalysts for various applications.

Abstract:Transition metal–nitrogen–carbon (TM–N–C) nanomaterials are promising platinum-based substitutes for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, large-scale commercial production of high-efficiency, durable TM–N–C catalysts remains a formidable challenge. In this work, a facile ″ZIF-on-ZIF″ strategy is first adopted to design core–shell polyhedral nanocages, and then, ferrocene (Fc) is added to form @Fc double-layer encapsulating polyhedral nanocages. Finally, Zn, Co, and Fe tridoped N–C nanocages (ZnCoFe–N–C) as the high-efficiency ORR electrocatalyst are prepared through high-temperature annealing. Benefiting from the trimetal, nitrogen and carbon species bond to each other to form highly efficient active sites, and the material exhibits outstanding performance in 0.1 M KOH, onset potential and half-wave potential of up to 0.95 and 0.878 V (vs RHE), respectively, and long-term durability and methanol tolerance. Furthermore, when utilizing as a zinc–air battery (ZAB) air electrode, it exhibits wonderful indicators, reflected in an open circuit voltage of 1.525 V, power density of 350.2 mW cm–2, and specific capacity of 794.7 mAh gzn–1, which outperforms the benchmark Pt/C catalyst. Abstract:Exploring remarkable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts for regenerative fuel cells and metal-air batteries is highly essential. Herein, a novel non-noble metal-based heterogeneous electrocatalyst with rich defects were successfully synthesized by liquid-liquid interfacial precipitation (LLIP) of fullerene (C 60 ) and ferrotetraphenylporphyrin (FeTPP) followed by one step pyrolysis. The obtained product annealed at 700°C (C 60 /FeTPP-700), when employed as ORR electrocatalyst, revealed a positive half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.877 V vs . reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), which was superior to that of the commercial 25% Pt/C. Delightfully, the assembled Zn-air battery (ZAB) using C 60 /FeTPP-700 as an air-electrode catalyst exhibited a high power density of 153 mW/cm 2 , specific capacity of 668 mAh/g and long-term cycling stability for more than 250 h. Experimental results proved that the excellent electrocatalytic ORR activity of C 60 /FeTPP-700 would attribute to the synergistic effect between FeN x sites, Fe 3 C/Fe nanoparticles and the structure defects. This work provides a feasible and simple method to prepare non-noble metal-based ORR electrocatalysts for the application of energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:Rational design and synthesis of non-precious metal electrocatalysts for highly efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is urgently required. Recently, single atom catalysts (SACs) have sparked intense interests due to their maximum atom utilization efficiency and excellent properties in electrocatalysis. Herein, we reported an efficient ORR electrocatalyst with atomically dispersed FeN4 sites anchored on 3D hierarchically ordered microporous-mesoporous-macroporous nitrogen doped carbon (3DOM Fe-N-C). Owing to the synergism of highly dispersed FeN4 active sites and 3D hierarchically ordered porous architecture, 3DOM Fe-N-C-900, which was obtained via pyrolysis of ferrocene-encapsulated macro-microporous ZIF-8 precursor at 900 °C, exhibited an outstanding ORR activity in both alkaline (E1/2 of 0.875 V) and acid mediums (E1/2 of 0.784 V), as well as superior stability (only changed 2 mV after 10,000 cycles in alkaline medium). Moreover, 3DOM Fe-N-C-900 as ORR catalyst in zinc-air battery achieved a high power density of 235 mW cm−2 and a high specific capacity of 768.3 mAh g−1, exceeding that driven by Pt/C. Our results revealed that the 3D hierarchically porous architecture of electrocatalysts could facilitate mass transport and increase the accessibility of active sites, thus optimizing their performances in ORR. This work well demonstrated the importance of rationally engineering porous structure of the catalyst for highly efficient ORR.
