Abstract:The dermal exposure of heavy metals in contaminated urban soils poses huge environmental health risks globally. However, their dermal bioaccessibility and adverse effects on human skin cells were not fully understood. In this study, we measured the total and dermal bioaccessibility of Cr, As, Cd, Pb, and Cu in four selected urban soil samples from Kunming, Yunnan, China, and evaluated the cellular responses of these bioaccessible extracts on human keratinocytes (HaCaT). Among all the metals, only As in Soil-3 (S3) exceeded Chinese risk screening and Yunnan background values at 38.2 mg/kg. The average concentrations of Cr, As, Cd, Pb, and Cu in all soil samples were 47.79, 15.50, 3.11, 104.27, and 180.29 mg/kg respectively. Although relatively high concentrations of heavy metals were detected in soil samples, the highest dermal bioaccessibility of Cd was 3.57% with others' being lower than 1%. The bioaccessible dermal-absorbed doses (DADs) of Cr, As, Cd, Pb, and Cu from soils reflected acceptable health risks since all DADs were below the corresponding derived dermal reference values. However, the toxic data showed the extracts of S3 and S4 presented certain cytotoxicity in HaCaT cells, indicating the existing models based on dermal bioaccessibility and DADs may be not accurate enough to assess their human health risk. Taken together, the human health risk assessment should be modified by taking their skin cytotoxicity into account.

Abstract:Health risks caused by heavy metal (HM) exposure in road dust has attracted extensive attention, but few studies have focused on the health risks of residents living in small- and medium-sized cities with rapid industrialization and urbanization. Thus, 140 road dust samples were collected across Anyang, a typical fourth-tier industrial city in central China, which were analysed for 10 different HMs (Mn, Zn, Pb, V, Cr, As, Cd, Ni, Cu and Co). Monte Carlo simulation and bioaccessibility were used to quantify the health risks of heavy metals comprehensively in road dust. Results revealed a remarkable accumulation of Mn, Zn, Pb, Cd and Cu. According to the Geo-accumulation index and potential ecological risk index, Cd was priority control pollutant. Moreover, 55.0% of the road dust samples reached heavily polluted level, and 52.86% of the samples were at high ecological risk levels. These results illustrated that HM contamination was serious and universal in the road dust of Anyang. The occurrences of HMs were allocated to traffic emissions, natural sources, industrial activities and agricultural activities with contribution rates of 35.4%, 6.0%, 41.6% and 17.0%, respectively. Except for Zn in the gastric phase, all other HMs had relatively low bioaccessibilities in the gastrointestinal system, usually less than 20%. The bioaccessibilities of most HMs were higher in the gastric phase, except for Cr, Ni and Cu, which remained higher in the intestinal phase. The non-carcinogenic risk and carcinogenic risk were remarkably reduced when considering the HM bioaccessibilities in the gastrointestinal system, especially for adults. The outcomes of this paper are valuable for understanding HM contamination in road dust and highlight the importance of risk assessment for populations living in the fourth- and fifth-tier cities.

Insights into the Health Status of the General Population Living Near an Electroplating Industry Zone: Metal Elevations and Renal Impairment

Abstract:A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2016 in Zhejiang Province, China, to evaluate the body burdens of metals and metalloids associated with renal dysfunction in populations living near electroplating industries. We recruited 236 subjects and performed physical examinations, determined the blood and urinary levels of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), antimony (Sb), and selenium (Se) by an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS), and measured three renal impairment biomarkers, namely nacetyl-beta-(D)-glucosaminidase (NAG), retinol-binding protein (RBP), and beta(2)-microglobulin (BMG). The proportion of abnormal nasal symptoms in the exposure group (10.1%) was much higher than in the control group (0; p < 0.05). The blood and urinary levels of As, Cd, and Se in the exposure group were significantly higher than those in the control group (p < 0.05). The blood levels of Mn and Pb, as well as the urinary levels of Cr and Ni, were significantly higher in the exposure group than in the control group (p < 0.05). The exposure group demonstrated higher levels of NAG, RBP, and BMG than the control group ( 0.51 vs. 0.14 mg/g creatinine, 12.79 vs. 9.26 IU/g creatinine, and 1.39 vs. 0.78 mg/g creatinine, respectively; p < 0.05). Urinary BMG was positively correlated with urinary Cd levels (r = 0.223, p < 0.05), while urinary RBP was correlated with blood Cd levels (r = 0.151, p < 0.05) and urinary Cd, Cr, Ni, and Se levels (r = 0.220, 0.303, 0.162, and 0.306, respectively; p < 0.05). In conclusion, our study indicated that a population living in the vicinity of electroplating industries had high body burdens of certain metals and metalloids associated with non-negligible renal dysfunction.

Abstract:The treatment of viral diseases remains one of the major challenges to modern medicine. During the past two decades there has been increased recognition of the consequences of serious viral illnesses that are not controlled by vaccination. These illnesses include human immunodeficiency virus, human herpes viruses, and viruses that cause hepatitis. There are now eight pathogens recognized in the herpes virus family that cause infections in humans. Infections by the herpes viruses are opportunistic and often life-threatening, leading to significant morbidity and mortality in the increasing number of chronically immune compromised individuals such as AIDS patients, cancer patients and transplant recipients on immunosuppressive therapy. Nearly all individuals with AIDS are infected with one or more of the herpes viruses. Antiviral therapy with guanosine nucleoside analogs acyclovir and ganciclovir has had a major impact on diseases caused by herpes simplex virus type-1 and type-2 (HSV-1, HSV-2), Varicella zoster virus (VZV), and human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) but development of resistant virus strains and the absence of any effective treatment for other members of the herpes family provide a stimulus for increased search of new agents effective against various herpes viruses. Pyrimidine nucleosides have taken up an important role in the therapy of virus infection. Significant progress in the study of anti-herpes nucleosides has been made by the advent of 5-substituted pyrimidine nucleosides such as 5-iodo-, 5-ethyl-, 5-(2-chloroethyl)-, and (E)-5-(2-bromovinyl)- derivatives of 2'-deoxyuridine. These are highly specific inhibitors of HSV-1, HSV-2, and/or VZV infections. However, Epstein Barr virus (EBV) and HCMV are much less sensitive to these agents. In 5-substituted pyrimidine nucleosides the nature of substituents, particularly at the C-5 position, has been found to be an important determinant of anti-herpes activity. Structural requirements at the C-2 carbon of the 5-substituent of pyrimidine nucleosides have been well established for anti-herpes activity. However, there is little qualitative or mechanistic knowledge of the derivatives with substitution at the C-1 carbon of the 5-substituent of pyrimidine nucleosides. During the last few years of our research, we have investigated a variety of C-1 functionalized substituents at the 5-position of the pyrimidine nucleosides to determine their usefulness as antiviral (herpes) agents. In the 5-(1-substituted) group of pyrimidine nucleosides, we demonstrated that novel substituents present at the C-1 carbon of the 5-side chain of the pyrimidine nucleosides are important determinants of potent and broad spectrum antiviral (herpes) activity including EBV and HCMV. In this article the work on design, synthesis and structure activity relationships of several 5-[(1-substituted) alkyl (or vinyl)] pyrimidine nucleoside derivatives as potential inhibitors of herpes viruses is reviewed.
Considering the bioavailability and bioaccessibility of heavy metals for risk assessment of street dust by typical transportation cities in China

Abstract:Heavy metals (HMs) pollution from dust was prevalent in cities worldwide. In order to quantify the risk-releasing capacity of HMs to the environment and human body, 54 road dust samples from Zhengzhou were selected for this study to analyze 9 different HMs among them. The risk-releasing capacity of HMs in the environment was determined using the sequential extraction method developed by the European Community Bureau of Reference, and the risk-releasing capacity of HMs in the human body was assessed using the bioaccessibility method. The results showed that elements such as Zn, Cd and Pb were significantly enriched, and Cd was the priority control pollutant. The positive matrix factorization results indicated that industrial activities (28.5%), oil combustion (20.7%), transportation activities (31.6%) and natural sources (19.2%) were the main sources of HMs in dust. The percentage of different speciation of HMs was determined, which showed that Cd had the strongest risk-releasing capacity in the environment. Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb were highly bioaccessible in the gastrointestinal tract. The bioaccessibility of HMs in artificial lysosomal fluid solution was two orders of magnitude higher than that in Gamble's solution. When considering the bioaccessibility of HMs, the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk indices were significantly lower. This study provides new insights into the determination of the risk-releasing capacity of HMs.

Abstract:Dachang mining area in China is known as "paradise for mineralogists" due to its most reserves of Sn, Sb, Pb, and Zn non-ferrous metal resources; thus, its evaluation for heavy metal assessment and consequent health risk is unavoidable. Sixty road dust samples were collected from study area to explore pollution level, ecological, and health risks from heavy metals and were analyzed by an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer and atomic fluorescence spectrometer. The results showed that average concentration of all the heavy metals in road dust in both mining and residential areas were remarkable higher than its corresponding background values, the former being more severe, except for Cr and Co. The morphological investigation showed that most of the particles were much less than 100 μm illustrating fine part of the road dust samples. Based on integrated pollution indices, Cd, Sb, As, Zn, and Pb were extremely contaminated and exceeded hundred times of the maximum risk value. The health risk assessment revealed substantially higher carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks to children and adult. Highest non-carcinogenic risk resulted from arsenic in mining and residential area with HQ ing of 644.56 and 267.94 respectively (standard HQ ≥ 1) while carcinogenic risk to children (1.94E + 00) which greatly exceeded from the threshold value of (1.0E-4). Sb, Cd, and Pb also posed carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk in road dust which is caused by excessive mining activities and heavy vehicle movement in the study area.

Abstract:Heavy metals in road dusts could cause high potential risk to both human health and environmental safety. This study evaluated chemical fractions, potential leachability, and bio-accessibility of heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Cd, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in road dusts from the steel-industrial city (Anshan), Northeastern China. Sequential extraction analysis revealed that Cr and Ni primarily existed in residual form. The non-residual fraction of heavy metals decreased in the order of Zn (average 57.78%) > Cu (39.16%) > Pb (30.73%) ≈ Cd (30.67%) > Ni (19.06%) > Cr (8.7%). The results showed that Cd, Cu, Zn, and Pb, which were extremely concentrated in potentially mobile fractions, had high potential risks. The mobility of Cd and Zn was higher than that of Cr, Cu, Pb, and Ni, which indicated that Cd and Zn posed higher risks. There was a significant relationship between PBET, TCLP-test, and bioavailable parts of sequential extraction, respectively. Redundancy analysis and correlation analysis results indicated that both the basic properties and total heavy metals regulated their toxicity and bioavailability of heavy metals. Thus, the results of health risk assessment to human and the environment can provide a more scientific implication for typical steel industrial urban management.
Areal Health Risk Assessment Using Soil Bioaccessible Heavy Metal(loid)s Around Industrial Area in Nanjing, Southeast China

Abstract:A systematic protocol for conducting area-specific health risk assessments associated with soil heavy metal(loid)s contamination, incorporating total and bioaccessible metal(loid)s, is outlined in this study. We evaluated total and bioaccessible heavy metal(loid)s levels, along with the associated community health risks, in urban soils around two industrial areas, LH01–LH10 and QX01–QX11, in Nanjing, Southeast China. Our findings unveiled substantial disparities in metal(loid)s concentrations, pollution sources, and population health risks across these sampled areas. Soils from LH03, LH05, LH09, QX09, and QX10 exhibited unacceptable carcinogenic ( CR ) and non-carcinogenic risks ( HI ) based on total metal(loid)s concentrations. However, most heavy metal(loid)s were proved non-bioaccessible through oral ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact, challenging the over-conservative use of total concentrations in risk assessment. Considering bioaccessible metal(loid)s, CR values decreased from 0.181 × 10 –4 –1.371 × 10 –4 to 0.023 × 10 –4 –0.080 × 10 –4 , and HI decreased from 0.163–3.400 to 0.069–1.328 for children. Spatial interpolation underscored variability in health risks, shaped by geographical and climatic conditions, soil properties, and toxic metal(loid)s concentrations, prompting our proposal for a more comprehensive area-specific health risk assessment protocol that integrates bioaccessible metal(loid)s considerations. These findings encapsulated a comprehensive and feasible risk assessment procedure, and provided valuable insights for refining approaches, remediating contaminated soils, and optimizing local and regional environmental policies.

Abstract:Abstract 124 road dust samples were collected from an urban area of Shenyang, a typical heavily industrial city in Northeast China, to study the concentration, pollution level, source, spatial distribution, and health risk of heavy metals. The average concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn were 1.802, 132.1, 60.33, 778.3, 54.80, 86.73, and 391.2 mg/kg, respectively. The levels of metal pollution ranged from minimal to extremely high, with average levels in the ranked order: Mn < Ni < Cr < Cu < Pb < Zn < Cd, indicating that the road dust was heavily polluted by Cd, Zn, and Pb. Source identification results demonstrated that Cr, Mn, and Ni had mixed sources including industrial emissions and weathering of soil, pavements, and building materials, while Cu, Pb, and Zn mainly originated from traffic and industrial activities, and Cd had a complex mixture of sources (with various anthropogenic sources). Hotspots of heavy metal pollution levels were closely correlated with local anthropogenic activities, such as industrial discharge, traffic-related exhaust emissions, and agricultural activities. Furthermore, health risk assessment revealed significant non-carcinogenic risks for children from multiple metals, and the carcinogenic risk assessment identified significant risks for children from Cd, with ingestion being the main exposure pathway for carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk for adults and children. However, no health risk was observed due to dermal and inhalation exposure pathways.

Abstract:The present study conducted the concentration evaluation, pollution assessment, source analysis, and risk assessment of heavy metals in the soil of the CPUA, China, to contribute to the smooth construction of urban agglomeration. Elevated levels of mean concentrations of cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and copper (Cu) in the soils were shown compared to background values. Cu and zinc (Zn) and also lead (Pb) and Cd exhibited spatial similarity. Manganese (Mn) and Cr exhibited point source characteristics such as the concentrations at a point much higher than the surrounding area. The potential ecological risk in the northern region belonged to the moderate risk level category. Cd contributed over 90% to the potential ecological risk. The health risk among children was higher than that among adults. The major exposure pathways were different for adults and children. Exposure, as shown using Hazard Index (HI), to adults was mainly through the skin contact route, while to children was through both the skin contact and ingestion route. The primary CR (carcinogenic risk) to adults was through the inhalation route, while that to children was through the ingestion route. In both children and adults, Cr was the main contributor to HI and CR. According to the Monte Carlo simulation results, the cumulative probability of exceeding the critical value of HI for children was approximately 2.8–3.0 times that for adults. According to the sensitivity analysis results, non-carcinogenic risk prevention should begin mainly by reducing exposure duration and skin contact. The cancer risk may be reduced primarily by decreasing the exposure duration and controlling ingestion. The PMF (Positive Matrix Factorization) source analysis revealed that Pb mainly came from transportation sources. In addition, Cu, Pb, and Mn were derived mainly from agricultural sources. Cr was derived mostly from a natural source, and Cd originated mainly from an industrial source.

Abstract:Health hazards caused by metal exposure in household dust are concerning environmental health problems. Exposure to toxic metals in household dust imposes unclear but solid health risks, especially for children. In this multicenter cross-sectional study, a total of 250 household dust samples were collected from ten stratified cities in China (Panjin, Shijiazhuang, Qingdao, Lanzhou, Luoyang, Ningbo, Xi'an, Wuxi, Mianyang, Shenzhen) between April 2018 and March 2019. Questionnaire was conducted to gather information on individuals' living environment and health status in real-life situations. Multivariate logistic regression and principal component analysis were conducted to identify risk factors and determine the sources of metals in household dust. The median concentration of five metals in household dust from 10 cities ranged from 0.03 to 73.18 μg/g. Among the five heavy metals, only chromium in household dust of Mianyang was observed significantly both higher in the cold season and from the downwind households. Mercury, cadmium, and chromium were higher in the third-tier cities, with levels of 0.08, 0.30 and 97.28 μg/g, respectively. There were two sources with a contribution rate of 38.3 % and 25.8 %, respectively. Potential risk factors for increased metal concentration include long residence time, close to the motorway, decoration within five years, and purchase of new furniture within one year. Under both moderate and high exposure scenarios, chromium showed the highest level of exposure with 6.77 × 10 −4 and 2.28 × 10 −3 mg·kg −1 ·d −1 , and arsenic imposed the highest lifetime carcinogenic risk at 1.67 × 10 −4 and 3.17 × 10 −4 , respectively. The finding highlighted the priority to minimize childhood exposure of arsenic from household dust.

Abstract:<p>Surface dust samples were collected in 2018 at 30 different sites in Shenyang City, China. Concentrations of chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), cupper (Cu), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), mercury (Hg) and cadmium (Cd) were determined, and chemical speciation of metals were analyzed. Mean metal concentrations followed the order Zn>Cu>Pb>Cr>Ni>As>Cd>Hg. Although concentrations of metals in dust samples were lower than previously reported, a measurable metal pollution signature in dust still exists. Metals (except for As), are influenced by anthropogenic activities. Spatial variation in mean metal dust concentrations and speciation varied significantly and were influenced by land-use and industrial activities. Source appointment Results revealed that pollution of surface dust was derived from three main source profiles (industrial and traffic pollution, coal combustion, and urban pollution), contributing to 90.7% of the variance. Health risk assessment indicated that risks were low, but children were susceptible to metals in surface dust. Results indicated oral ingestion was the dominant exposure pathway. Non-carcinogenic Cr and Pb and carcinogenic As were the main metal contaminants in surface dust.</p>

Multiple pathway exposure risks and driving factors of heavy metals in soil-crop system in a Pb/Zn smelting city, China

Abstract:Heavy metals (HMs) in soil near metal smelting areas have attracted great interest due to their crucial threat to agricultural product safety and human health. We investigated HMs in agricultural soils and crops (wheat and maize) in a Pb/Zn smelting city, central China; analysed the exposure risk of HMs through multiple pathways in a soil-crop system through Monte Carlo simulations; and identified the key driving factors using random forest (RF) model. The results showed that most soil HMs exceeded their background level. Cd had the highest exceeding rate compared with the screening values and the highest exceeding rate (40%, in wheat) compared with the food safety limit. Additionally, Cd had the highest bioaccumulation capacity in both maize and wheat. In identifying the key driving factors of soil HMs, RF had a satisfactory prediction performance for As, Cd, and Pb, with corresponding R 2 values of 0.47, 0.51, and 0.60, respectively, with the dominant factors being distance to the Pb/Zn smelter, coal washery, and road area, respectively. However, Cr and Hg exhibited lower R 2 values which may be due to their limited influence from the selected anthropogenic, traffic, and industrial variables. Probabilistic health risk assessments through Monte Carlo simulations revealed that the non-carcinogenic risk was around the risk limit (HI=1), while the carcinogenic risk for both children and adults exceeded the risk limit (TCR=1E-04), and adults had higher carcinogenic risk than children, which was due to a longer duration of exposure and higher ingestion rate of crop grains in adults. Cd had the highest carcinogenic risk and the highest probability of exceeding the limiting risk. Briefly, levels of Cd in both soil and crops should be controlled, especially for the source of smelting emissions. The results of this study could be treated as valuable references for policymakers to formulate control strategies for soil HM pollution in agricultural areas near Pb/Zn smelting activities.

Assessment of the potential health risks of heavy metals in soils in a coastal industrial region of the Yangtze River Delta

Abstract:Soil heavy metal contamination is a serious environmental problem. Human beings may be directly exposed to heavy metals in soils through the inhalation of soil particles, dermal contact, and oral ingestion, which can seriously threaten health. This study assesses the health risks associated with heavy metals in soils by determining the concentrations of eight heavy metals (Cr, Pb, Cd, Hg, As, Cu, Zn, and Ni) based on 2051 surface-soil samples collected from the southern Yangtze River Delta of China. The mean concentrations were higher than the corresponding background values in Zhejiang Province and China as a whole, indicating an accumulation of heavy metals. The health risk assessment suggests that the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks in the study area were not significant. The non-carcinogenic risk for children was the highest, followed by those for adults and seniors; the non-carcinogenic risk for the entire population was less than 1.0, the predetermined threshold. Carcinogenic risk for adults was the highest, followed by those for seniors and children; a few sample points had a value larger than the threshold of 1.0E−04. Arsenic represented the greatest contribution to non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk. Meanwhile, ingestion of heavy metals in soil was the main exposure pathway for carcinogenic risk, followed by inhalation and dermal exposure. The spatial method of Getis-Ord was used to identify hot spots of health risk. Hot spots with high hazard index (HI) and total carcinogenic risk (TCR) for children, adults, and seniors were mainly distributed in core urban areas, such as Jiangbei, Haishu, Yinzhou, Jiangdong, and the urban areas of some other counties, which coincided with industrial, mining, and urban areas of the study area and were strongly influenced by anthropogenic activities. These results provide a basis for heavy metal control in soil, source identification, and environment management in the Yangtze River Delta and other rapidly developing industrial regions in China.
Ecological Health Risk Assessment and Source Identification of Heavy Metals in Surface Soil Based on a High Geochemical Background: A Case Study in Southwest China

Abstract:A total of 28,095 surface soil samples were collected in areas with high natural background levels; the potential ecological risk is generally low, and the high-risk area is small and mainly affected by lead–zinc mines. The contribution to the potential ecological risk factor (RI) is as follows: Hg > Cd > As > Pb > Cu > Ni > Cr > Zn, with noncarcinogenic chronic risks of Cr > As > Cd > Pb > Ni > Cu > Hg > Zn; furthermore, dermal contact is the main pathway of exposure causing health risks. The total carcinogenic risks caused by heavy metals were as follows: Cr > Cd > As > Pb; and the risks posed by Cr, Cd, and As were higher than the threshold value (1.0 × 10−4); people face a higher threat to heavy metals in soils in Zhenxiong, Ludian, Huize, Weixin, and Zhaoyang. The evaluation result of the EPA PMF model shows that the soil heavy metals are mainly composed of five sources, of which basalt, Permian, and Triassic carbonate rock parent material constitute the natural background source, while the mining activities of lead–zinc mines and the emissions of coal burning by residents constitute the anthropogenic source. The contribution was ranked in order of lead–zinc mining (26.7%) > Triassic carbonate (23.7%) > basalt (20.9%) > coal burning and automobile emissions (16.1%) > Permian carbonate (12.6%).

Abstract:Unintentional ingestion of metal-contaminated soils may pose a great threat to human health. To accurately evaluate the health risks of heavy metal(loid)s in soils, their bioaccessibility has been widely determined by in vitro assays and increasingly employed to optimize the assessment parameters. Given that, using meta-analysis, we analyzed the literature on farmland heavy metal(loid)s (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, Ni, and Zn) in Chinese main grain production regions, and collected their total and bioaccessibility data to accurately assess their human health risks. Monte Carlo simulation was used to reduce the uncertainty in metal concentration, intake rate, toxicity coefficient, and body weight. We found that the mean concentration (0.47 mg/kg) and geological accumulation index (I geo , 0–5.24) of Cd were the priority position of controlling metals. Moreover, children are more vulnerable to carcinogenic risks than adults. Soil mineralogy, physicochemical properties, Fe, and the types of in vitro assays are the influencing factors of bioaccessibility discrepancy. Furthermore, appropriate bioaccessibility determination methods can be adapted according to the differences in ecological receptors for the risk assessment, like developing a "personalized assessment" scheme for polluted farmland soil management. Collectively, bioaccessibility-based models may provide an accurate and effective approach to human health risk assessment.

Abstract:<p>Potential toxic metal(loid)s (PTMs) in road dust are a major concern in relation to urban environmental quality. Identifying pollution hotspots and sources of PTMs is an essential prerequisite for pollution control and management. Herein, the concentrations, pollution and potential health risks of 8 PTMs (As, Cd, Co, Cu, Hg, Mo, Pb and Zn) in road dust from the highly urbanized areas of Nanjing were studied. Spatial occurrences and sources of PTMs were explored using geostatistics, principal component analysis (PCA) and local Moran's index. The contamination factor (CF) results showed that Co was mainly natural in origin, while the other PTMs were polluted, with average CFs ranging from 1.4 to 11.0 as follows: Hg > Mo > Cd > Cu > Pb > Zn > As, indicating moderate to very high contamination. Except for Co and Hg, the other PTMs were heavily loaded on PC1, which explained 44.72% of the total variance. Combining the statistical results and distributions of potential sources, we deduced that industrial emissions dominated the spatial patterns of all polluted PTMs in road dust, which showed high levels in the northern parts of the study region and generally decreasing levels southwards. Moreover, Pb and Zn in the south-central area and Cd in the north-central area displayed hotspots, with maximum CFs of 5.5 (Pb), 4.2 (Zn) and 16.2 (Cd), which were related to additional automotive and railway braking emissions, respectively. The resuspension of legacy pesticides in soil is likely responsible for the As pollution hotspot in the southwestern part. Despite the high anthropogenic contributions (27% for As and 68–88% for the other metals) to the PTMs in road dust, their noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks were rarely found for children and adults based on the values of the hazard index and carcinogenic risk index. However, attention still should be paid to the pollution hotspots in the northern region.</p>

Abstract:Rapid urbanization and industrialization have led to the accumulation of heavy metals in urban areas. The distribution and health risk of heavy metals in soil and street dust were studied by collecting the samples in pairs from different land uses in Changsha, China. The results showed that the average contents of the heavy metals Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn, Cr and Ni in the soil were 45.3, 0.69, 46.3, 220.4, 128.7 and 32.9 mg·kg−1, and the corresponding heavy metal contents in the street dust were 130.1, 3.9, 130.8, 667.2, 223.2, 50.5 mg·kg−1, respectively. The soils in the parks and roadsides have higher heavy metal contents than those in the residential and agricultural areas. The street dust collected from parks, roadsides and residential areas contained higher heavy metal contents than agricultural areas. Significant correlations were found between heavy metals, suggesting similar sources. However, most of the heavy metals in the soil were uncorrelated with those in the street dust. The contents of heavy metals in soil are the results of long-term pollution. Street dust is easily affected by natural or human disturbances, reflecting pollution emissions in a short period. The health risks posed by heavy metals in the soil are acceptable, but the street dust may threaten children’s health, especially in residential areas. Pb, Cr and Cd are the main risk contributors. Reducing the emissions from industrial plants and traffic may reduce the risk of exposure to heavy metals in the street dust.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution is becoming a serious issue in developing countries such as China, and the public is increasingly aware of its adverse health impacts in recent years. We assessed the potential health risks in a lead-zinc mining area and attempted to identify the key exposure pathways. We evaluated the spatial distributions of personal exposure using indigenous exposure factors and field monitoring results of water, soil, food, and indoor and outdoor air samples. The risks posed by 10 metals and the contribution of inhalation, ingestion and dermal contact pathways to these risks were estimated. Human hair samples were also analyzed to indicate the exposure level in the human body. Our results show that heavy metal pollution may pose high potential health risks to local residents, especially in the village closest to the mine (V1), mainly due to Pb, Cd and Hg. Correspondingly, the residents in V1 had higher Pb (8.14 mg/kg) levels in hair than those in the other two villages. Most of the estimated risks came from soil, the intake of self-produced vegetables and indoor air inhalation. This study highlights the importance of site-specific multipathway health risk assessments in studying heavy-metal exposures in China.

Abstract:The modified BCR (the European Community Bureau of Reference) sequential extraction procedure was applied for partitioning and evaluating the mobility, availability and persistence of trace metals (Al, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sr, V and Zn) in urban street dusts collected from different areas of Nanjing, China. The mobility sequence based on the sum of the BCR sequential extraction stages was: Sr (91.65%)>Pb (79.16%)>Zn (74.26%)>Cu (68.53%)>Co (45.98%)>Al (40.01%)≈V (38.45%)≈Ni (37.88%)>Cr (29.35%)>Cd (22.68%). Almost every trace metal had its highest total concentrations in the industrial area, except for Sr which had its highest concentration in the commercial area. Contamination factors (Cf), risk assessment code (RAC) and enrichment factor (Ef) were then calculated to further assess the environmental risk and provide a preliminary estimate of the main sources of trace metals in street dusts. Non-carcinogenic effects and carcinogenic effects due to exposure to urban street dusts were assessed for both children and adults. For non-carcinogenic effects, ingestion was the main route of exposure to street dusts for these metals, followed by dermal contact and inhalation. Hazard index values for all studied metals were lower than the safe level of 1, and Pb exhibited the highest risk value (0.125) in the case of children. The carcinogenic risk for Cd, Co, Cr and Ni were all below the acceptable level (<10−6).
