Abstract:Nanoscale α-MnO2 with different morphologies (nanoparticles, nanoflowers and nanorods) were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method and tested in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation. The catalytic activity of α-MnO2 mainly relied on the specific surface area and crystallinity, and followed the order of α-MnO2 nanoflowers>α-MnO2 nanorods>α-MnO2 nanoparticles>commercial MnO2. Acidic condition was more beneficial to CIP removal than neutral condition, and the degradation would be greatly accelerated in alkaline circumstance. The introduction of chloride and bicarbonate displayed concentration-dependent dual effect. The presence of natural organic matter (NOM) exerted the detrimental effect on CIP degradation. Eleven oxidation products were identified by UPLC–MS/MS and the changes of their concentrations were monitored, five products showed monotonous uptrend while four intermediates present monotonous downtrend once they were generated. Piperazine ring cleavage, hydroxylation and F/OH substitution were found to be the important oxidation pathways. The acute toxicity of resulted solution gradually decreased with the lapse of time, and higher PMS concentration favored the detoxification. The CIP removal in α-MnO2/PMS process was also efficient under the actual water background, which was testified by the results of fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM).
Activation of calcium sulfite by bismuth cobalt-copper perovskite-manganese dioxide composite for efficient degradation of metronidazole

Abstract:The highly efficient BiCo 0.5 Cu 0.5 O 3 -MnO 2 catalyst was prepared using the hydrothermal method and utilized for the first time to activate sulfite for degrading metronidazole (MNZ) in this study. Physicochemical analysis of the BiCo 0.5 Cu 0.5 O 3 -MnO 2 catalyst was performed using XRD, FTIR, BET, SEM, TEM, and XPS, confirming the successful synthesis of catalyst. BiCo 0.5 Cu 0.5 O 3 -MnO 2 demonstrated a larger specific surface area, a more uniform pore structure, and prevented perovskite agglomeration. The catalyst effectively activated CaSO 3 , resulting in the degradation of 99.94 % of MNZ within 30 min, showing excellent catalytic performance. Quenching experiments and EPR tests indicated that SO •- 4 , SO •- 5 and 1 O 2 were the main reactive species, with the oxygen vacancy on the catalyst surface playing a crucial role in accelerating the formation of reactive species and electron transfer. Moreover, the valence transformation of Co, Cu, and Mn was identified as the main contributor to the activation of CaSO 3 , demonstrating significant synergistic effects. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry detected eleven intermediates, revealing that the BiCo 0.5 Cu 0.5 O 3 -MnO 2 /CaSO 3 system could convert MNZ into low-toxicity products through three potential degradation pathways. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that higher Fukui indices of MNZ sites were more susceptible to free radical attack. The BiCo 0.5 Cu 0.5 O 3 -MnO 2 /CaSO 3 system also exhibited excellent degradability to different natural water bodies and other pollutants. Furthermore, the catalyst displayed strong stability and outstanding catalytic performance after 5 cycles. This study presents a versatile strategy for developing highly efficient green catalysts, which could be utilized in organic wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Catalytic ceramic nanofiber membranes (Mn@CNMs) were prepared by anchoring Mn2O3 nanoparticles on the pits of attapulgite (APT) nanofibers via an impregnation and in-situ precipitation method. An integrated catalytic ozonation/membrane filtration process applying Mn@CNM was employed to degrade sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and the removal achieved up to 81.3% during a 7-h continuous filtration. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) quenching and radical detection experiments were conducted to determine the contribution of O-1(2), (OH)-O-center dot and O(2)(center dot- )towards the catalytic degradation of SMX. Moreover, Mn@CNM exhibited wide applicability for real water matrix and the total removal of various kinds of emerging contaminants in real hospital wastewater reached up to 98.5%. The excellent performances of Mn@CNM were attributed to the nano-confinement effect in the membrane layer. First, anchoring Mn2O3 nanoparticles on the pits of the APT surface suppressed the growth and aggregation of nanosized Mn2O3, providing abundant reactive sites for catalytic ozonation. Second, the interlaced APT nanofibers formed nano-sized network structures, where ROS and SMX were confined in close vicinity and ROS have more chances to attack SMX. This work provides a promising strategy for the preparation of catalytic ceramic membrane with high catalytic efficiency for degradation of emerging contaminants in water.

Abstract:Tungsten-doped iron-cobalt layered bimetallic hydroxides (CoFeW-LDHs) were used for activating sulfite to degrade metronidazole (MTZ) in this study. The characterization results confirmed the presence of vertically aligned hierarchical ultrathin nanosheets forming a porous network, which enhances the material's ability to activate CaSO 3 . The study investigated the optimal Co/Fe/W atomic ratio in the catalysts and examined the impact of various parameters, such as catalyst dosage, CaSO 3 concentration, initial pH, and MTZ concentration. Under the best experimental conditions identified, the degradation rate of MTZ reached 95% within 60 min. Mechanism analysis revealed that W doping promoted oxidation–reduction reactions between Co(II)/Co(III) and Fe(III)/Fe(II) on the catalyst surface, facilitating CaSO 3 activation and the continuous generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) like 1 O 2 and SO 4 •− . Based on experimental, density functional theory (DFT), and quantitative structure–activity relationship analyses, the study proposed a degradation pathway and evaluated the ecotoxicity of MTZ and its intermediates. MTZ was found to be converted via three pathways into low or non-toxic intermediates, ultimately mineralizing into small inorganic molecules. Even after five cycles, Co 3 FeW-LDHs maintained a removal efficiency of over 90% for MTZ. The material's ease of synthesis, high activity, and stability suggest significant potential for practical application in environmental cleanup efforts.

Abstract:A facile urea-assisted hydrothermal method was developed for synthesizing Co(Ca)-silicate nanosheets@13X (CoCa-13X) as catalyst materials for peroxymonosulfate activation. Urea gradually dissolves 13X to form the silicate anion, and anchors Co2+ ions to the surface of 13X, while introducing Ca2+ ions to form in situ Co/Ca-silicates. The degradation efficiency and reusability of the compound catalyst for metronidazole (MNZ) were investigated. The results demonstrated that at an initial concentration of 25 mg/L, the CoCa-13X-PMS system exhibited excellent catalytic degradation performance towards MNZ, and the degradation rate reached 99.52% within 5 min. Furthermore, the CoCa-13X-PMS system maintained high catalytic activity against various organic pollutants and even at high concentrations of pollutants (up to 30mg/L). Free radical quenching experiments revealed simultaneous participation of SO4•– and 1O2 in the oxidation process simultaneously. Additionally, the degradation mechanism and pathway of MNZ were studied and proposed, along with evaluation of biotoxicity associated with its degradation intermediates. This method offers a novel strategy for synthesizing silica zeolite-based cobalt catalysts with exceptional PMS activity for removal of organic pollutants.

Abstract:Herein, manganese-doped perovskites LaCo 1−x Mn x O 3 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2) were synthesized by the so-gel process to dominantly activate PMS for Metronidazole (2-methyl-5-nitroimidazole-1-ethanol (MNZ) degradation. The results revealed that the MNZ degradation rate under the LaCo 0.8 Mn o.2 O 3 /PMS system reached 99.42 % in 30 min with a rate constant of 0.1616 min −1 , which is significantly higher than the LaCoO 3 /PMS system under optimal reaction conditions (LaCo 0.8 Mn 0.2 O 3 = 0.4 g/L, [PMS] = 0.4 mM, [MNZ] = 15 mg/L, pH = 7, T = 25 ± 2 °C). LaCo 0.8 Mn 0.2 O 3 has demonstrated a higher surface area (44.35 m 2 g −1 ) as compared to pristine LaCoO 3 (7.89 m 2 g −1 ) , suggesting that Mn doping remarkably improves the catalytic activity and provides more active sites to the LaCo 0.8 Mn 0.2 O 3 /PMS to increase MNZ degradation efficiency. Meanwhile, the impact of various influencing factors and associated anions on MNZ degradation was examined. On the surface of LaCo 0.8 Mn 0.2 O 3 , photogenerated electrons and the conversion of Co 2+ /Mn 3+ to Co 3+ /Mn 4+ both played a part in PMS activation for MNZ degradation. The changes in valence states of elements were further corroborated through XPS analysis, which confirmed the potential application of the LaCo 0.8 Mn 0.2 O 3 catalyst in MNZ degradation process. The generation of SO4•− , HO•, and 1 O 2 was confirmed through radical quenching studies and further validated by EPR measurements. It is evident from results that SO4•− , contributed significantly towards the degradation of MNZ along with minor role of HO•, and 1 O 2 . Abstract:The molecular nest structured catalysts have demonstrated better performance than the traditional supported catalysts. However, they have not been tried in antibiotics or other organic pollutants removal from water by advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Here we synthesized Mn anchored zeolite molecular nest (Mn@ZN) for the catalytic ozonation of cephalexin (CLX), which is the widely used antibiotic and also a refractory pollutant in water. The ozonation catalyzed by Mn@ZN achieves 97% of CLX degradation in only 2 min and a reaction rate constant of 0.2454 L·mg−1·s−1, which is 79.2 times higher than that of the non-catalytic ozonation. Even after ten cycles, the 0.46Mn@ZN/O3 still achieves a CLX degradation efficiency higher than 88% in 2 min, presenting an excellent stability. Mn ions stabilized by the molecular nests facilitate Lewis acid sites and oxygen vacancies, providing active sites for O3 sorption and decomposition into ·O2− and 1O2 through electrons transfer for the radical reaction with CLX. DFT calculation indicates that both the oxygen vacancy formation energy and the O3 adsorption energy of Mn@ZN are reduced by the Mn species introduction. This study finds a fascinating catalyst of Mn@ZN for the catalytic ozonation of antibiotics, and also a smart design strategy for zeolite confined metals catalysts for water treatment.
Enhanced activation performance of peroxymonosulfate by NiCo2O4/SnO2 composite for metronidazole degradation under visible light

Abstract:In this study, a NiCo2O4/SnO2 complex was successfully synthesized by a convenient hydrothermal method and used for the catalytic degradation of metronidazole (MNZ) by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The physicochemical properties of NiCo2O4/SnO2 were identified by a series of characterization methods. The remarkable PMS activation performance of NiCo2O4/SnO2 originated from the formation of a heterojunction between NiCo2O4 and SnO2, which led to the improvement of the light response ability and the electron conduction efficiency of the composite. The composite catalyst displayed almost 100 % MNZ degradation efficiency within 30 min under visible light. The degradation efficiency of MNZ can be maintained in a wide pH range (3−11). Furthermore, the effect of catalyst dosage, PMS concentration and MNZ concentration on the catalytic process were investigated by changing the experimental parameters. The various anions and different water substrates had only a minor influence on the degradation process of MNZ. In addition, quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance techniques were employed to detect active groups in the reaction process. The results showed that superoxide radicals (O2 •-), hydroxyl radicals (OH•), singlet oxygen (1O2), and sulfate radicals (SO4 •-) were the main causes of MNZ degradation. Meanwhile, the liquid phase mass spectrometry (LCMS) and Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (T.E.S.T) were utilized to identify the intermediate products and their biological toxicity in the degradation process, and demonstrating a significant decline of biotoxicity compared with MNZ. Generally, this work will provide a new feasible scheme for the effective treatment of organic contaminants in water.

Immobilized Co2+ and Cu2+ induced structural change of layered double hydroxide for efficient heterogeneous degradation of antibiotic

Abstract:In this study, MgMn-layered double hydroxide (MgMnLDH) exhibited excellent remediation functionality for heavy metals-antibiotics combined pollution. On the one hand, Co2+ and Cu2+ was efficiently immobilized on MgMnLDH with maximum quantity of 4.30 and 10.65 mmol g-1, respectively. A series of characterizations reflected the changes in structure and physicochemical properties of MgMnLDH after the immobilization. Density functional theory calculations (DFT) confirmed that the binding modes were lattice substitution for Co2+ and surface precipitation for Cu2+. On the other hand, the immobilized heavy metals enhanced the heterogeneous degradation for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) by peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Complete degradation was achieved within 10 min in MgMnLDH-Co-4/PMS system and 60 min in MgMnLDH-Cu/PMS system, while only 20% in MgMnLDH/PMS system. The pH adaptability, reusability, stability and activation mechanism of two systems were systematically compared. The superior degradation performance of MgMnLDH-Co-4 benefited from the intense Co/Mn synergism and abundant oxygen vacancies, which could accelerate electron transfer during PMS activation process. The applicability of two catalysis system was confirmed in purifying other antibiotics and actual wastewater. The results highlight the importance of structural control in heterogeneous catalysis and provide new idea for environmental remediation.

Mn-Doped Biochar Derived from Sewage Sludge for Ciprofloxacin Degradation

Abstract:Three different MnO2 polymorphs, alpha-MnO2, beta-MnO2, and delta-MnO2, with K+-tuned tunnel structures were loaded on sludge-based biochar (BC). Then MnO2-loaded BCs served as the catalyst for ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal. Results showed that as-prepared materials exhibited better catalytic activity than raw BC, among which BC-alpha-MnO2 achieved superior CIP removal than BC-beta-MnO2 and BC-delta-MnO2. CIP removal increased when pH increased from 3 to 5, then slightly decreased with further increase of pH. Desorption experiments confirmed that both adsorption and degradation contributed to the CIP removal by MnO2-loaded BCs. Compared with the raw BC, the contribution of degradation increased 27.87%, 19.87%, and 14.19%, respectively, for BC-alpha-MnO2, BC-beta-MnO2, and BC-delta-MnO2. The radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance tests demonstrated the existence of reactive oxidation species (ROS) including O-2(-)center dot, center dot OH, and O-1(2). The O-2(-)center dot and center dot OH were the main ROS during CIP degradation by BC, while O-1(2) was the main ROS for MnO2-loaded BCs. BC-alpha-MnO2 featured the most abundant ROS, followed by BC-beta-MnO2 and BC-delta-MnO2. The persistent free radicals and Mn in MnO2-loaded BCs may serve as the active site for electron transfer during the degradation process, thus leading to the generation of O-2(-)center dot, center dot OH, and O-1(2). Boosting the activation of Peroxymonosulfate and the degradation of metronidazole over FeCo2O4 quantum dots anchored on β-FeOOH Nanosheets: Inspired from octahedral Co(II) with missing angle

Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation by bimetallic Co/Fe oxides, especially spinel FeCo2O4, is a promising way in decontaminating organic pollutants in wastewaters. However, it suffers from low efficiency and the intrinsic catalytic mechanisms are still poorly understood. Therefore, we applied lattice VOs (oxygen vacancies) adjustment strategy to construct a octahedral Co(II)–enriched FeCo2O4 quantum dots anchored on β-FeOOH nanosheets composite (Co(II)-FCQDs/FNS) for boosting PMS activation during the degradation of Metronidazole (MNZ), and pure FeCo2O4 quantum dots (FCQDs) was studied as a comparison. As a result, in PMS/Co(II)-FCQDs/FNS system, 5–30 mg·L−1 MNZ could be completely degraded within 5 min with the usage of 0.05 g·L−1 catalyst, and the degradation efficiency of 100 mg·L−1 MNZ reached 99.92% within 40 min with the PMS utilization of 62.90% at the same condition, whose degradation rate constant was 6.45 times than that of the FCQDs/PMS system. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching experiments indicated that PMS /Co(II)-FCQDs/FNS system was a pure radical-based (sulfate radicals (SO4 •−), hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and superoxide radical (O2 •−) oxidation process. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation revealed that the generation of octahedral Co(II) derived from oxygen vacancies, improved the charge transfer in the spinel lattice while providing a new electron transfer channel from lattice Co(II)/Fe(II) to the surface of FeCo2O4. Simultaneously, strengthened the surface adsorption of HSO5 − and increased the number of unpaired electrons, thus boosting the PMS activation performance. In addition, the influence of reaction parameters and water matrix were investigated. Finally, the degradation pathway of MNZ was proposed and the toxicity of intermediates was also assessed. This work is expected to facilitate the design and application of PMS/Co(II)-FCQDs/FNS system for decontaminating organic pollutants from wastewater.

Abstract:The investigation into the degradation of metronidazole (MNZ), a frequently employed antibiotic, through the electrochemical activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) utilizing either boron-doped diamond (BDD) or dimensional stable anode (DSA) as the anode, was conducted in a systematic manner. The enhancement of MNZ removal was observed with increasing current density, PMS dosage, and initial pH. Response surface methodology (RSM), based on a Box–Benken design, was utilized to evaluate the efficiency of MNZ elimination concerning current density (ranging from 11.1 to 33.3 mA/cm2), initial pH (ranging from 3 to 9), PMS dosage (ranging from 1 to 5 mmol·L−1), and reaction time (ranging from 25 to 45 min). The optimal operational conditions for MNZ removal were determined as follows: a current density of 13.3 mA/cm2, a pH of 3.7, a PMS dosage of 2.4 mmol·L−1, and a reaction time of 40 min. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), quenching experiments, and chemical probe experiments confirmed the involvement of •OH, SO4•− and 1O2 radicals as the primary reactive species in MNZ degradation. The presence of HCO3− and H2PO4− hindered MNZ removal, whereas the presence of Cl− accelerated it. The degradation pathways of MNZ were elucidated by identifying intermediates and assessing their toxicity. Additionally, the removal efficiencies of other organic pollutants, such as sulfamethoxazole (SMX), carbamazepine (CBZ), and nitrobenzene (NB), were compared. This study contributes to a comprehensive understanding of MNZ degradation efficiency, mechanisms, and pathways through electrochemical activation of PMS employing BDD or DSA anodes, thereby offering valuable insights for the selection of wastewater treatment systems.

Abstract:A three-dimensional (3D) flower-like zero-valent bimetallic shell/core iron/copper/biochar composite (NZVI/Cu0/BC) was synthesized for the purpose of removing antibiotic metronidazole (MNZ) through the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Under optimal conditions, complete removal of MNZ (10 mg/L) was achieved within 6 min. The study quantitatively investigated the contribution of different participants in the complex system, including carbon composites, Fe and Cu species, and radicals and nonradicals. Based on the characterization and analysis data, possible activation mechanisms were proposed, which involved the oxygenated functional groups of BC and the bimetallic structure feature of NZVI/Cu0 accelerating the generation of 1O2 and other oxidation species. Additionally, the synergistic effect of Cu-Fe-BC facilitated the redox cycle of Cu2+/Cu+ and Fe3+/Fe2+, thereby promoting radical in the NZVI/Cu0/BC-3/PMS system. Notably, NZVI/Cu0/BC-3 has the advantages of wide pH usable range as well as broad-spectrum adaptability towards various organic pollutant and various water environments. Density functional theory (DFT) results indicated that the adsorption energy of PMS onto NZVI/Cu0/BC was more negative compared to their individual adsorption energies, and the O-O bond in the structure of PMS molecules became weaker after adsorption, resulting in improved efficiency of PMS activation. Liquid chromatograph combined with mass spectrometry (LC-MS) measurement and DFT calculation suggested three main degradation pathways of MNZ, and the toxicities of their intermediates were evaluated.
Novel halloysite nanotube-based ultrafine CoMn2O4 catalyst for efficient degradation of pharmaceuticals through peroxymonosulfate activation

Abstract:In this study, a highly efficient catalyst was prepared by loading CoMn2O4 spinel oxide (CMO) on halloysite (HNT), a natural mineral nanotube, for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) towards the degradation of some frequently detected pharmaceuticals in water bodies. The CMO nanoparticles are evenly distributed on the outer surface of HNT tubes with little agglomeration and smaller grain size compared to bare CMO. A moderate loading of 40% CMO on HNT (i.e. 40-CMO/HNT) displayed an excellent catalytic ability, leading to the complete degradation of carbamazepine in 20 min. Carbamazepine was decomposed gradually by oxidation, hydrolysis and the cleavage of rings with 60% mineralization rate. The adhering of CMO on HNT contributed to better stability and durability than bare CMO and the recycling of 40-CMO/HNT was found feasible and efficient. A test of three-(3)-time-reuse showed that over 90% of carbamazepine was removed in each cycle, while the leaching of Co and Mn was reduced stepwise by 12.6% and 8.9%, respectively. The possible universal application of 40-CMO/HNT in removing common antibiotics was verified by targeting tetracycline, ofloxacin and sulfamethoxazole. The positive results promise the development of an effective treatment technology for the removal of common pharmaceuticals.

Abstract:Bimetallic Fe and Ce-embedded N-enriched porous biochar (Fe-Ce@N-BC) was synthesized to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for metronidazole (MNZ) removal. 97.5% decay of MNZ was achieved within 60 min in FeCe@N-BC/PMS system. The kinetic reaction rate constant of the Fe-Ce@N-BC/PMS system (0.0566 min(-1)) was 10.5 times higher than that of the BC/PMS system (0.0054 min(-1)). The highly dispersed Fe-Ce oxide nanocrystals serve as PMS activation centers, while the addition of nitrogen source increases the surface area and porosity of biochar, as well as enhances the PMS activation performance. It is noteworthy that graphitic N and C--O groups in biochar facilitates the PMS activation via a nonradical pathway and the Fe2+/Fe3+ and Ce3+/Ce4+ participate in the radical pathway. The presence of anion ions of SO42-can promote the MNZ degradation process, while HCO3- and Cl- ions suppress the MNZ removal. The MNZ removal using Fe-Ce@N-BC in salty media behavior similarly with that in DDI water, while the decreased removal efficiency in real effluent could be mitigated by prolonging the reaction time. Finally, the degradation intermediate products of MNZ were identified and the pathway was proposed according to LC-MS analysis. The relatively low cytotoxicity of the Fe@Ce/N-BC evaluated by animal cell (A375) and toxicity evolution of MNZ intermediate products strongly suggest huge potential of utilization of the catalyst for aquatic environmental remediation.

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon materials have drawn tremendous attention as activators of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of antibiotics. However, it is still challenging to construct MOF-derived materials with well-dispersed and highly-exposed metal active sites. Herein, the bimetallic Cobalt-Zinc-zeolite imidazolate framework and melamine co-derived double layer nitrogen-doped porous carbon matrix supported highly dispersed cobalt nanoparticles (Co NPs) (denoted as Co-NC-C) with the exposure of more Co NPs sites was developed by one-step pyrolysis method. The transmission electron microscopy results demonstrate that double layer carbon matrix as a dispersant can effectively inhibit the agglomeration of Co NPs, and Co-NC-C possessed more exposure of Co active sites compared with Co-NC without melamine. Co-NC-C efficiently activated PMS to remove over 96.67% of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) at a widespread range of pH within 120 min due to its the highly-exposed Co active sites and high graphitization degree. Additionally, the degradation mechanism dominated by the singlet oxygen was demonstrated. Finally, four products and two probable degradation pathways of SMX were confirmed. Half of the products were less toxic than SMX based on the ecological structure activity relationships analysis results. The study provides valuable insights for the development of MOF-derived catalysts with well-dispersed and highly-exposed metal active sites.

Abstract:Cu-Co bimetallic catalysts show excellent performance for metronidazole (MNZ) degradation in a Fenton-like reaction, a near complete conversion was achieved. Cu doped Co3O4 with {1 1 2} exposed facet has proved to promote the oxidation of Co2+ to Co3+ in Cu-CoOx. The surface Cu+ on {1 1 2}-enclosed Co3O4 was identified as the main active species for the reaction and its concentration counts a lot in performance. The Cu+ with raised d-band center under Co-Cu synergistic interaction has boosted the dissociation of H2O2 into •OH with stronger electron donation to H2O2 and elongated O-O bond. Meanwhile, the accelerated redox process especially for Cu on the {1 1 2} facet of Co3O4 with a faster electron transfer rate also contributed to the excellent performance. The optimization of operational parameters of Co1Cu2 in MNZ removal with investigation of degradation pathway were also thoroughly performed.

Abstract:Sulfite-based advanced oxidation technology has received considerable attention for its application in organic pollutants elimination. However, the potential of natural sediments as effective catalysts for sulfite activation has been overlooked. This study investigates a novel process utilizing suspended sediment/sulfite (SS/S(IV)) for degradation of metronidazole (MNZ). Our results demonstrate that MNZ degradation efficiency can reach to 93.1 % within 90 min with 12.0 g SS and 2.0 mM sulfite. The influencing environmental factors, including initial pH, SS dosage, S(IV) concentration, temperature, and co-existing substances were systematically investigated. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance analyses results indicate that SO3•- is the primary active substance responsible for MNZ degradation, with involvement of SO4•-, SO5•-, and •OH. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Mössbauer spectra reveal that Fe (III)-silicates play a crucial role in activating S(IV). Furthermore, analysis of degradation intermediates and pathways of MNZ is conducted using liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry (LC -MS). The toxicity of MNZ and its intermediates were also systematically evaluated by the T.E.ST. program and wheat seeds germination test. This study offers valuable insight into the activation of sulfite by natural sediments and could contribute to the development of SS-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for the in-situ remediation of antibiotics-contaminated water environments.

Abstract:ε-MnO2 effectively activates peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the efficient degradation of emerging pollutants. ε-MnO2 was synthesized by a facile thermal-treatment method and its long-term stability and efficiency for the elimination of emerging pollutants, including sulfamethoxazole (SMX), sulfachloropyridazine (SCP), sulfamethazine (SMT), ciprofloxacin (CIP), and azithromycin (AZI), from aqueous media were evaluated. ε-MnO2 was found to activate PMS more efficiently than α-MnO2, β-MnO2, or δ-MnO2, owing to its high −OH-group content, unique structure, and high surface area. Sulfate (SO4•−), hydroxyl (•OH), and superoxide (O2•−) radicals, as well as singlet oxygen (1O2) were generated, with O2•− acting as the 1O2 precursor. The ε-MnO2/PMS system proved to be effective in the pH range of 3.5–9.0 and the rate of SMX degradation was not significantly affected by the presence of inorganic anions or natural organic matter. The proposed pathway for the activation of PMS by ε-MnO2 includes inner-sphere interactions between ε-MnO2 and PMS, and electron transfer to PMS via the MnIII ↔ MnIV redox cycle, which generates reactive oxygen species. These findings provide new insight into PMS activation by less-toxic metal oxides as catalysts and demonstrate that Mn-based materials can be used to effectively treat water matrices containing emerging pollutants.
