Abstract:In order to address the challenges of inefficiency and insufficient accuracy in the manual identification of young citrus fruits during thinning processes, this study proposes a detection methodology using the you only look once for complex backgrounds of young citrus fruits (YCCB-YOLO) approach. The method first constructs a dataset containing images of young citrus fruits in a real orchard environment. To improve the detection accuracy while maintaining the computational efficiency, the study reconstructs the detection head and backbone network using pointwise convolution (PWonv) lightweight network, which reduces the complexity of the model without affecting the performance. In addition, the ability of the model to accurately detect young citrus fruits in complex backgrounds is enhanced by integrating the fusion attention mechanism. Meanwhile, the simplified spatial pyramid pooling fast-large kernel separated attention (SimSPPF-LSKA) feature pyramid was introduced to further enhance the multi-feature extraction capability of the model. Finally, the Adam optimization function was used to strengthen the nonlinear representation and feature extraction ability of the model. The experimental results show that the model achieves 91.79% precision (P), 92.75% recall (R), and 97.32% mean average precision (mAP)on the test set, which were improved by 1.33%, 2.24%, and 1.73%, respectively, compared with the original model, and the size of the model is only 5.4 MB. This study could meet the performance requirements for citrus fruit identification, which provides technical support for fruit thinning.

YOLOF-Snake: An Efficient Segmentation Model for Green Object Fruit

Abstract:Accurate detection and segmentation of the object fruit is the key part of orchard production measurement and automated picking. Affected by light, weather, and operating angle, it brings new challenges to the efficient and accurate detection and segmentation of the green object fruit under complex orchard backgrounds. For the green fruit segmentation, an efficient YOLOF-snake segmentation model is proposed. First, the ResNet101 structure is adopted as the backbone network to achieve feature extraction of the green object fruit. Then, the C5 feature maps are expanded with receptive fields and the decoder is used for classification and regression. Besides, the center point in the regression box is employed to get a diamond-shaped structure and fed into an additional Deep-snake network, which is adjusted to the contours of the target fruit to achieve fast and accurate segmentation of green fruit. The experimental results show that YOLOF-snake is sensitive to the green fruit, and the segmentation accuracy and efficiency are significantly improved. The proposed model can effectively extend the application of agricultural equipment and provide theoretical references for other fruits and vegetable segmentation.
Multi-stage tomato fruit recognition method based on improved YOLOv8

Abstract:Introduction: In the field of facility agriculture, the accurate identification of tomatoes at multiple stages has become a significant area of research. However, accurately identifying and localizing tomatoes in complex environments is a formidable challenge. Complex working conditions can impair the performance of conventional detection techniques, underscoring the necessity for more robust methods. Methods: To address this issue, we propose a novel model of YOLOv8-EA for the localization and identification of tomato fruit. The model incorporates a number of significant enhancements. Firstly, the EfficientViT network replaces the original YOLOv8 backbone network, which has the effect of reducing the number of model parameters and improving the capability of the network to extract features. Secondly, some of the convolutions were integrated into the C2f module to create the C2f-Faster module, which facilitates the inference process of the model. Third, the bounding box loss function was modified to SIoU, thereby accelerating model convergence and enhancing detection accuracy. Lastly, the Auxiliary Detection Head (Aux-Head) module was incorporated to augment the network's learning capacity. Result: The accuracy, recall, and average precision of the YOLOv8-EA model on the self-constructed dataset were 91.4%, 88.7%, and 93.9%, respectively, with a detection speed of 163.33 frames/s. In comparison to the baseline YOLOv8n network, the model weight was increased by 2.07 MB, and the accuracy, recall, and average precision were enhanced by 10.9, 11.7, and 7.2 percentage points, respectively. The accuracy, recall, and average precision increased by 10.9, 11.7, and 7.2 percentage points, respectively, while the detection speed increased by 42.1%. The detection precision for unripe, semi-ripe, and ripe tomatoes was 97.1%, 91%, and 93.7%, respectively. On the public dataset, the accuracy, recall, and average precision of YOLOv8-EA are 91%, 89.2%, and 95.1%, respectively, and the detection speed is 1.8 ms, which is 4, 4.21, and 3.9 percentage points higher than the baseline YOLOv8n network. This represents an 18.2% improvement in detection speed, which demonstrates good generalization ability. Discussion: The reliability of YOLOv8-EA in identifying and locating multi-stage tomato fruits in complex environments demonstrates its efficacy in this regard and provides a technical foundation for the development of intelligent tomato picking devices.
Cucumber Picking Recognition in Near-Color Background Based on Improved YOLOv5

Abstract:Rapid and precise detection of cucumbers is a key element in enhancing the capability of intelligent harvesting robots. Problems such as near-color background interference, branch and leaf occlusion of fruits, and target scale diversity in greenhouse environments posed higher requirements for cucumber target detection algorithms. Therefore, a lightweight YOLOv5s-Super model was proposed based on the YOLOv5s model. First, in this study, the bidirectional feature pyramid network (BiFPN) and C3CA module were added to the YOLOv5s-Super model with the goal of capturing cucumber shoulder features of long-distance dependence and dynamically fusing multi-scale features in the near-color background. Second, the Ghost module was added to the YOLOv5s-Super model to speed up the inference time and floating-point computation speed of the model. Finally, this study visualized different feature fusion methods for the BiFPN module; independently designed a C3SimAM module for comparison between parametric and non-parametric attention mechanisms. The results showed that the YOLOv5s-Super model achieves mAP of 87.5%, which was 4.2% higher than the YOLOv7-tiny and 1.9% higher than the YOLOv8s model. The improved model could more accurately and robustly complete the detection of multi-scale features in complex near-color backgrounds while the model met the requirement of being lightweight. These results could provide technical support for the implementation of intelligent cucumber picking.

An Improved Apple Object Detection Method Based on Lightweight YOLOv4 in Complex Backgrounds

Abstract:Convolutional neural networks have recently experienced successful development in the field of computer vision. In precision agriculture, apple picking robots use computer vision methods to detect apples in orchards. However, existing object detection algorithms often face problems such as leaf shading, complex illumination environments, and small, dense recognition targets, resulting in low apple detection rates and inaccurate localization. In view of these problems, we designed an apple detection model based on lightweight YOLOv4—called Improved YOLOv4—from the perspective of industrial application. First, to improve the detection accuracy while reducing the amount of computation, the GhostNet feature extraction network with a Coordinate Attention module is implemented in YOLOv4, and depth-wise separable convolution is introduced to reconstruct the neck and YOLO head structures. Then, a Coordinate Attention module is added to the feature pyramid network (FPN) structure in order to enhance the feature extraction ability for medium and small targets. In the last 15% of epochs in training, the mosaic data augmentation strategy is turned off in order to further improve the detection performance. Finally, a long-range target screening strategy is proposed for standardized dense planting apple orchards with dwarf rootstock, removing apples in non-target rows and improving detection performance and recognition speed. On the constructed apple data set, compared with YOLOv4, the mAP of Improved YOLOv4 was increased by 3.45% (to 95.72%). The weight size of Improved YOLOv4 is only 37.9 MB, 15.53% of that of YOLOv4, and the detection speed is improved by 5.7 FPS. Two detection methods of similar size—YOLOX-s and EfficientNetB0-YOLOv3—were compared with Improved YOLOv4. Improved YOLOv4 outperformed these two algorithms by 1.82% and 2.33% mAP, respectively, on the total test set and performed optimally under all illumination conditions. The presented results indicate that Improved YOLOv4 has excellent detection accuracy and good robustness, and the proposed long-range target screening strategy has an important reference value for solving the problem of accurate and rapid identification of various fruits in standard orchards.

Abstract:Tomatoes are a critical economic crop. The realization of tomato harvesting automation is of great significance in solving the labor shortage and improving the efficiency of the current harvesting operation. Accurate recognition of fruits is the key to realizing automated harvesting. Harvesting fruit at optimum ripeness ensures the highest nutrient content, flavor and market value levels, thus maximizing economic benefits. Owing to foliage and non-target fruits obstructing target fruits, as well as the alteration in color due to light, there is currently a low recognition rate and missed detection. We take the greenhouse tomato as the object of research. This paper proposes a tomato recognition model based on the improved YOLOv8 architecture to adapt to detecting tomato fruits in complex situations. First, to improve the model’s sensitivity to local features, we introduced an LSKA (Large Separable Kernel Attention) attention mechanism to aggregate feature information from different locations for better feature extraction. Secondly, to provide a higher quality upsampling effect, the ultra-lightweight and efficient dynamic upsampler Dysample (an ultra-lightweight and efficient dynamic upsampler) replaced the traditional nearest neighbor interpolation methods, which improves the overall performance of YOLOv8. Subsequently, the Inner-IoU function replaced the original CIoU loss function to hasten bounding box regression and raise model detection performance. Finally, the model test comparison was conducted on the self-built dataset, and the test results show that the mAP0.5 of the YOLOv8-Tomato model reached 99.4% and the recall rate reached 99.0%, which exceeds the original YOLOv8 model detection effect. Compared with faster R-CNN, SSD, YOLOv3-tiny, YOLOv5, and YOLOv8 models, the average accuracy is 7.5%, 11.6%, 8.6%, 3.3%, and 0.6% higher, respectively. This study demonstrates the model’s capacity to efficiently and accurately recognize tomatoes in unstructured growing environments, providing a technical reference for automated tomato harvesting.

Fruit Detection and Counting in Apple Orchards Based on Improved Yolov7 and Multi-Object Tracking Methods

Abstract:With the increasing popularity of online fruit sales, accurately predicting fruit yields has become crucial for optimizing logistics and storage strategies. However, existing manual vision-based systems and sensor methods have proven inadequate for solving the complex problem of fruit yield counting, as they struggle with issues such as crop overlap and variable lighting conditions. Recently CNN-based object detection models have emerged as a promising solution in the field of computer vision, but their effectiveness is limited in agricultural scenarios due to challenges such as occlusion and dissimilarity among the same fruits. To address this issue, we propose a novel variant model that combines the self-attentive mechanism of Vision Transform, a non-CNN network architecture, with Yolov7, a state-of-the-art object detection model. Our model utilizes two attention mechanisms, CBAM and CA, and is trained and tested on a dataset of apple images. In order to enable fruit counting across video frames in complex environments, we incorporate two multi-objective tracking methods based on Kalman filtering and motion trajectory prediction, namely SORT, and Cascade-SORT. Our results show that the Yolov7-CA model achieved a 91.3% mAP and 0.85 F1 score, representing a 4% improvement in mAP and 0.02 improvement in F1 score compared to using Yolov7 alone. Furthermore, three multi-object tracking methods demonstrated a significant improvement in MAE for inter-frame counting across all three test videos, with an 0.642 improvement over using yolov7 alone achieved using our multi-object tracking method. These findings suggest that our proposed model has the potential to improve fruit yield assessment methods and could have implications for decision-making in the fruit industry.
Detecting Citrus in Orchard Environment by Using Improved YOLOv4

Abstract:Real-time detection of fruits in orchard environments is one of crucial techniques for many precision agriculture applications, including yield estimation and automatic harvesting. Due to the complex conditions, such as different growth periods and occlusion among leaves and fruits, detecting fruits in natural environments is a considerable challenge. A rapid citrus recognition method by improving the state-of-the-art You Only Look Once version 4 (YOLOv4) detector is proposed in this paper. Kinect V2 camera was used to collect RGB images of citrus trees. The Canopy algorithm and the K-Means++ algorithm were then used to automatically select the number and size of the prior frames from these RGB images. An improved YOLOv4 network structure was proposed to better detect smaller citrus under complex backgrounds. Finally, the trained network model was used for sparse training, pruning unimportant channels or network layers in the network, and fine-tuning the parameters of the pruned model to restore some of the recognition accuracy. The experimental results show that the improved YOLOv4 detector works well for detecting different growth periods of citrus in a natural environment, with an average increase in accuracy of 3.15% (from 92.89% to 96.04%). This result is superior to the original YOLOv4, YOLOv3, and Faster R-CNN. The average detection time of this model is 0.06 s per frame at 1920 × 1080 resolution. The proposed method is suitable for the rapid detection of the type and location of citrus in natural environments and can be applied to the application of citrus picking and yield evaluation in actual orchards.

Abstract:Green citrus detection in citrus orchards provides reliable support for production management chains, such as fruit thinning, sunburn prevention and yield estimation. In this paper, we proposed a lightweight object detection YOLOv5-CS (Citrus Sort) model to realize object detection and the accurate counting of green citrus in the natural environment. First, we employ image rotation codes to improve the generalization ability of the model. Second, in the backbone, a convolutional layer is replaced by a convolutional block attention module, and a detection layer is embedded to improve the detection accuracy of the little citrus. Third, both the loss function CIoU (Complete Intersection over Union) and cosine annealing algorithm are used to get the better training effect of the model. Finally, our model is migrated and deployed to the AI (Artificial Intelligence) edge system. Furthermore, we apply the scene segmentation method using the “virtual region” to achieve accurate counting of the green citrus, thereby forming an embedded system of green citrus counting by edge computing. The results show that the mAP@.5 of the YOLOv5-CS model for green citrus was 98.23%, and the recall is 97.66%. The inference speed of YOLOv5-CS detecting a picture on the server is 0.017 s, and the inference speed on Nvidia Jetson Xavier NX is 0.037 s. The detection and counting frame rate of the AI edge system-side counting system is 28 FPS, which meets the counting requirements of green citrus.

Abstract:It is important to monitor the maturity of citrus fruits during the growth period by using deep learning to implement visual detection technology to identify their state of ripeness in their natural environment. The problem is that the ripeness of citrus fruits is mainly judged manually, and there is a lack of fast and accurate automatic detection methods for citrus fruit ripeness. In this study, the optimal weight model was trained from 1688 images of citrus fruits collected in the natural environment based on the lightweight YOLOv4-Tiny model. The experimental results show that the model has 92.4% mAP for citrus fruit detection, and the detection accuracy of Faster R-CNN is slightly higher than that of the improved YOLOv4 Tiny compared with the current mainstream two-stage detection algorithm Faster R-CNN. Although the improved YOLOv4 Tiny has better detection speed, compared with the harvesting performance of the harvesting robot, the improved YOLOv4 Tiny is better. YOLOv5 and YOLOv4 are generally weaker than the improved YOLOv4-Tiny, and the model has more parameters and occupies more memory. Meanwhile, the model can achieve accurate recognition of fruits under different shooting distances, different shading situations and different lighting situations, and can quickly and effectively identify the ripeness of citrus fruits under complex backgrounds with strong robustness. The system can provide technical support for yield estimation of citrus fruit orchards and the location detection of picking machines and has reference value for recognition and ripeness detection of other fruits.

A Lightweight YOLOv8 Tomato Detection Algorithm Combining Feature Enhancement and Attention

Abstract:A tomato automatic detection method based on an improved YOLOv8s model is proposed to address the low automation level in tomato harvesting in agriculture. The proposed method provides technical support for the automatic harvesting and classification of tomatoes in agricultural production activities. The proposed method has three key components. Firstly, the depthwise separable convolution (DSConv) technique replaces the ordinary convolution, which reduces the computational complexity by generating a large number of feature maps with a small amount of calculation. Secondly, the dual-path attention gate module (DPAG) is designed to improve the model’s detection precision in complex environments by enhancing the network’s ability to distinguish between tomatoes and the background. Thirdly, the feature enhancement module (FEM) is added to highlight the target details, prevent the loss of effective features, and improve detection precision. We built, trained, and tested the tomato dataset, which included 3098 images and 3 classes. The proposed algorithm’s performance was evaluated by comparison with the SSD, faster R-CNN, YOLOv4, YOLOv5, and YOLOv7 algorithms. Precision, recall rate, and mAP (mean average precision) were used for evaluation. The test results show that the improved YOLOv8s network has a lower loss and 93.4% mAP on this dataset. This improvement is a 1.5% increase compared to before the improvement. The precision increased by 2%, and the recall rate increased by 0.8%. Moreover, the proposed algorithm significantly reduced the model size from 22 M to 16 M, while achieving a detection speed of 138.8 FPS, which satisfies the real-time detection requirement. The proposed method strikes a balance between model size and detection precision, enabling it to meet agriculture’s tomato detection requirements. The research model in this paper will provide technical support for a tomato picking robot to ensure the fast and accurate operation of the picking robot.

Abstract:The smart farm is currently a hot topic in the agricultural industry. Due to the complex field environment, the intelligent monitoring model applicable to this environment requires high hardware performance, and there are difficulties in realizing real-time detection of ripe strawberries on a small automatic picking robot, etc. This research proposes a real-time multistage strawberry detection algorithm YOLOv5-ASFF based on improved YOLOv5. Through the introduction of the ASFF (adaptive spatial feature fusion) module into YOLOv5, the network can adaptively learn the fused spatial weights of strawberry feature maps at each scale as a way to fully obtain the image feature information of strawberries. To verify the superiority and availability of YOLOv5-ASFF, a strawberry dataset containing a variety of complex scenarios, including leaf shading, overlapping fruit, and dense fruit, was constructed in this experiment. The method achieved 91.86% and 88.03% for mAP and F1, respectively, and 98.77% for AP of mature-stage strawberries, showing strong robustness and generalization ability, better than SSD, YOLOv3, YOLOv4, and YOLOv5s. The YOLOv5-ASFF algorithm can overcome the influence of complex field environments and improve the detection of strawberries under dense distribution and shading conditions, and the method can provide technical support for monitoring yield estimation and harvest planning in intelligent strawberry field management.

Abstract:After the birth of deep learning, artificial intelligence has entered a vigorous period of rapid development. In this process of rising and growing, we have made one achievement after another. When deep learning is applied to fruit target detection, due to the complex recognition background, large similarity between models, serious texture interference, and partial occlusion of fruits, the fruit target detection rate based on traditional methods is low. In order to solve these problems, a BCo-YOLOv5 network model is proposed to recognize and detect fruit targets in orchards. We use YOLOv5s as the basic model for feature image extraction and target detection. This paper introduces BCAM (bidirectional cross attention mechanism) into the network and adds BCAM between the backbone network and the neck network of the YOLOv5s basic model. BCAM uses weight multiplication strategy and maximum weight strategy to build a deeper position feature relationship, which can better assist the network in detecting fruit targets in fruit images. After training and testing the network, the map BCo-YOLOv5 network model reaches 97.70%. In order to verify the detection ability of the BCo-YOLOv5 network to citrus, apple, grape, and other fruit targets, we conducted a large number of experiments BCo-YOLOv5 network. The experimental results of the BCo-YOLOv5 network show that this method can effectively detect citrus, apple, and grape targets in fruit images, and the fruit target detection method based on BCo-YOLOv5 network is better than most orchard fruit detection methods.

Abstract:With the gradual increase in the annual production of citrus, the efficiency of human labor has become the bottleneck limiting production. To achieve an unmanned citrus picking technology, the detection accuracy, prediction speed, and lightweight deployment of the model are important issues. Traditional object detection methods often fail to achieve balanced effects in all aspects. Therefore, an improved YOLOv7 network model is proposed, which introduces a small object detection layer, lightweight convolution, and a CBAM (Convolutional Block Attention Module) attention mechanism to achieve multi-scale feature extraction and fusion and reduce the number of parameters of the model. The performance of the model was tested on the test set of citrus fruit. The average accuracy (mAP@0.5) reached 97.29%, the average prediction time was 69.38 ms, and the number of parameters and computation costs were reduced by 11.21 M and 28.71 G compared with the original YOLOv7. At the same time, the Citrus-YOLOv7 model's results show that it performs better compared with the current state-of-the-art network models. Therefore, the proposed Citrus-YOLOv7 model can contribute to solving the problem of citrus detection.
A lightweight grape detection model in natural environments based on an enhanced YOLOv8 framework

Abstract:Grapefruit and stem detection play a crucial role in automated grape harvesting. However, the dense arrangement of fruits in vineyards and the similarity in color between grape stems and branches pose challenges, often leading to missed or false detections in most existing models. Furthermore, these models' substantial parameters and computational demands result in slow detection speeds and difficulty deploying them on mobile devices. Therefore, we propose a lightweight TiGra-YOLOv8 model based on YOLOv8n. Initially, we integrated the Attentional Scale Fusion (ASF) module into the Neck, enhancing the network's ability to extract grape features in dense orchards. Subsequently, we employed Adaptive Training Sample Selection (ATSS) as the label-matching strategy to improve the quality of positive samples and address the challenge of detecting grape stems with similar colors. We then utilized the Weighted Interpolation of Sequential Evidence for Intersection over Union (Wise-IoU) loss function to overcome the limitations of CIoU, which does not consider the geometric attributes of targets, thereby enhancing detection efficiency. Finally, the model's size was reduced through channel pruning. The results indicate that the TiGra-YOLOv8 model's mAP(0.5) increased by 3.33% compared to YOLOv8n, with a 7.49% improvement in detection speed (FPS), a 52.19% reduction in parameter count, and a 51.72% decrease in computational demand, while also reducing the model size by 45.76%. The TiGra-YOLOv8 model not only improves the detection accuracy for dense and challenging targets but also reduces model parameters and speeds up detection, offering significant benefits for grape detection.
Light-YOLOv3: fast method for detecting green mangoes in complex scenes using picking robots

Abstract:When a robot picks green fruit under natural light, the color of the fruit is similar to the background; uneven lighting and fruit and leaf occlusion often affect the performance of the detection method. We take green mangoes as an experimental object. A lightweight green mangoes detection method based on YOLOv3 is proposed here. To improve the detection speed of the method, we first combine the color, texture, and shape features of green mango to design a lightweight network unit to replace the residual units in YOLOv3. Second, the improved Multiscale context aggregation (MSCA) module is used to concatenate multilayer features and make predictions, solving the problem of insufficient position information and semantic information on the prediction feature map in YOLOv3; this approach effectively improves the detection effect for the green mangoes. To address the overlap of green mangoes, soft non-maximum suppression (Soft-NMS) is used to replace non-maximum suppression (NMS), thereby reducing the missing of predicted boxes due to green mango overlaps. Finally, an auxiliary inspection green mango image enhancement algorithm (CLAHE-Mango) is proposed, is suitable for low-brightness detection environments and improves the accuracy of the green mango detection method. The experimental results show that the F1% of Light-YOLOv3 in the test set is 97.7%. To verify the performance of Light-YOLOv3 under the embedded platform, we embed one-stage methods into the Adreno 640 and Mali-G76 platforms. Compared with YOLOv3, the F1% of Light-YOLOv3 is increased by 4.5%, and the running speed is increased by 5 times, which can meet the real-time running requirements for picking robots. Through three sets of comparative experiments, we could determine that our method has the best detection results in terms of dense, backlit, direct light, night, long distance, and special angle scenes under complex lighting.

Tomato Maturity Recognition Model Based on Improved YOLOv5 in Greenhouse

Abstract:Due to the dense distribution of tomato fruit with similar morphologies and colors, it is difficult to recognize the maturity stages when the tomato fruit is harvested. In this study, a tomato maturity recognition model, YOLOv5s-tomato, is proposed based on improved YOLOv5 to recognize the four types of different tomato maturity stages: mature green, breaker, pink, and red. Tomato maturity datasets were established using tomato fruit images collected at different maturing stages in the greenhouse. The small-target detection performance of the model was improved by Mosaic data enhancement. Focus and Cross Stage Partial Network (CSPNet) were adopted to improve the speed of network training and reasoning. The Efficient IoU (EIoU) loss was used to replace the Complete IoU (CIoU) loss to optimize the regression process of the prediction box. Finally, the improved algorithm was compared with the original YOLOv5 algorithm on the tomato maturity dataset. The experiment results show that the YOLOv5s-tomato reaches a precision of 95.58% and the mean Average Precision (mAP) is 97.42%; they are improved by 0.11% and 0.66%, respectively, compared with the original YOLOv5s model. The per-image detection speed is 9.2 ms, and the size is 23.9 MB. The proposed YOLOv5s-tomato can effectively solve the problem of low recognition accuracy for occluded and small-target tomatoes, and it also can meet the accuracy and speed requirements of tomato maturity recognition in greenhouses, making it suitable for deployment on mobile agricultural devices to provide technical support for the precise operation of tomato-picking machines.

Abstract:As technology continues to advance, the automation of strawberry production and picking is an inevitable trend. To address the pressing issues of insufficient detection of smaller strawberries and misdetection resulting from the intricate background of strawberry images, an improved strawberry recognition method based on the YOLOv8n model was proposed. The improvements are as follows: 1) The deletion of the pixel detection layer with a focus on small target strawberries and the addition of a pixel small target detection layer were implemented to reduce the model volume and enhance the network reconstruction. 2) In the neck portion, a global attention mechanism was incorporated. 3) The SPD-Conv method was applied to improve the detection capability of small taget strawberries. 4) To address the limitations of the CIOU loss function, the EIOU loss function was utilized. The results of the experiment conducted on the self-made strawberry dataset demonstrated that the volume of the improved algorithm model was reduced by 59.7%, its precision was improved by 1.3%, and its recall rate increased by 2.1%. Additionally, the mAP was enhanced by 1.6%. The detection time for a single strawberry fruit image on a GPU was 17. 2 ms, which rendered the improved model suitable for practical applications. The model was verified in terms of small targets, and it achieved better detection performance than yolov5n, yolov6n, and yolov8s. The proposed algorithm demonstrated improved detection capabilities, reduced model size, and better target detection of strawberries.

Abstract:This paper improves the citrus-fruit detection accuracy for picking robot in complex scenes and ensures real-time picking operations by proposing a novel detection method called high-precision and lightweight YOLOv4 (HPL-YOLOv4). Specifically, the lightweight feature extraction network GhostNet is applied as the backbone to enhance the citrus feature extraction. Then, a depthwise separable convolution and the Mish activation function are introduced into the Neck network to reduce the model's parameters. Furthermore, an efficient channel attention mechanism (ECA) is employed to enhance the multi-scale feature weights obtained by the backbone network, further improving the model's performance. Finally, the soft DIoU non-maximum suppression (DIo-U_NMS) algorithm optimizes the bounding boxes screening. The experimental evaluation highlights that for a 416 x 416 pixels image, the detection time of HPL-YOLOv4 is 18.2 ms, and the target detection speed is 55 FPS. Compared with YOLOv4, the average precision (AP) value of HPL-YOLOv4 is 98.21 %, and the precision rate is 93.45 %, increased by 9.41 % and 2.26 %, respectively. Moreover, the model size of HPL-YOLOv4 is reduced from 250.7 MB to 43.5 MB. Overall, HPL-YOLOv4 can accurately and quickly detect citrus fruits in complex growth environments, theoretically supporting the development of citrus-picking robots.
Lightweight Detection Method for Real-Time Monitoring Tomato Growth Based on Improved YOLOv5s

Abstract:In order to monitor the growth and development of tomatoes, and improve the efficiency of flower and fruit thinning and tomato picking, this paper constructs a tomato flower and fruit dataset and proposes a TF-YOLOv5s model for the detection of tomato flowers and fruits in natural environments. Based on the YOLOv5s model, a C3Faster module is introduced to reduce the number of parameters and calculations while maintaining detection accuracy. The regular convolution is replaced by depth-wise separable convolution (DWConv) to avoid parameter redundancy. To improve the convergence and accuracy of the model, this paper replaces Complete Intersection over Union (CIoU) loss with Efficient Intersection over Union (EIoU) loss. The Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) module is added to improve the model's sensitivity to the features of the tomato flowers and fruits. Compared with the baseline model, the number of parameters is reduced by 54.5%, the weight file is reduced by 52.8%, the Floating-point Operation Per second (FLOPs) is reduced by 48.7%. The detection accuracy of tomato flowers and fruits mAP@0.5 has improved by 1.4% and 1.2% respectively. TF-YOLOv5s is used to detect three types of targets: tomato flowers, red tomatoes, and green tomatoes, and mAP@0.5 of which can reach as high as 95.2%. Furthermore, the improved algorithm is deployed on two edge computing devices to verify its effectiveness. Experimental results show that the algorithm in this paper can achieve high detection with less computational resources. This algorithm has the potential value of application in practical tomato production.
