Abstract:Background: Since the era of smartphones started in early 2007, they have steadily turned into an accepted part of our lives. Poor sleep is a health problem that needs to be closely monitored before it causes severe mental health problems, such as anxiety or depression. Sleep disorders (eg, acute insomnia) can also develop to chronic insomnia if not treated early. More specifically, mental health problems have been recognized to have casual links to anxiety, depression, heart disease, obesity, dementia, diabetes, and cancer. Several researchers have used mobile sensors to monitor sleep and to study changes in individual mood that may cause depression and anxiety. Objective: Extreme sleepiness and insomnia not only influence physical health, they also have a significant impact on mental health, such as by causing depression, which has a prevalence of 18% to 21% among young adults aged 16 to 24 in the United Kingdom. The main body of this narrative review explores how passive data collection through smartphone sensors can be used in predicting anxiety and depression. Methods: A narrative review of the English language literature was performed. We investigated the use of smartphone sensors as a method of collecting data from individuals, regardless of whether the data source was active or passive. Articles were found from a search of Google Scholar records (from 2013 to 2020) with keywords including "mobile phone," "mobile applications," "health apps," "insomnia," "mental health," "sleep monitoring," "depression," "anxiety," "sleep disorder," "lack of sleep," "digital phenotyping," "mobile sensing," "smartphone sensors," and "sleep detector." Results: The 12 articles presented in this paper explain the current practices of using smartphone sensors for tracking sleep patterns and detecting changes in mental health, especially depression and anxiety over a period of time. Several researchers have been exploring technological methods to detect sleep using smartphone sensors. Researchers have also investigated changes in smartphone sensors and linked them with mental health and well-being. Conclusions: The conducted review provides an overview of the possibilities of using smartphone sensors unobtrusively to collect data related to sleeping pattern, depression, and anxiety. This provides a unique research opportunity to use smartphone sensors to detect insomnia and provide early detection or intervention for mental health problems such as depression and anxiety if insomnia is detected.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction The proliferation of wearable and smartphone technologies has enabled continuous monitoring of sleep using data from different channels (physiological [wearables], behavioural [phone usage] and ecological momentary assessment [EMA self-report]). As these modalities use different methods to assess sleep, information gaps suggested by discrepancies between estimates may be filled in through cross-referencing among the modalities to produce a more accurate sleep measurement. Moreover, the pattern of discrepancies could inform about specific sleep and peri-sleep behaviors (e.g. phone use before bedtime). Methods 198 staff and students from the National University of Singapore (61 male, mean age 26.15±5.83 years) were recruited for an 8-week study. Sleep timings were assessed daily from three modalities: a wearable sleep and activity tracker (Oura ring), estimations from smartphone touchscreen interactions (tappigraphy) and smartphone derived EMA self-reports. Sleep estimates from the different modalities were compared for agreement (bivariate correlation) and discrepancies (t-test). Additionally, clustering analysis of high-discrepancy nights (>1h discrepancy between modalities) was performed to identify pattens of sleep behaviors that could lead to specific discrepancies. Results Adherence throughout the 8-week monitoring period (total 11,088 nights) was = high for the Oura ring; 9826 nights [80%]), Tappigraphy; 9740 nights [88%)), and EMA; 9166 nights [83%]). Sleep estimates across the three modalities showed high agreement (r=0.79-.91), with some discrepancies: Relative to self-report data, Oura wake time tended to be a later (Mean diff=9mins, t=18.58, p<.001), while tappigraphy estimates of bedtime tended to be early (Mean diff=15mins, t=26.48, p<.001). On 23% of nights (1755 nights), however, large discrepancies were detected (>1h). K-means clustering identified three distinct patterns of discrepancy, which were dominantly expressed in different individuals. Group comparison revealed that these individuals differed in demographic variables (age, student/work status), sleep variables (sleep timing, duration, subjective sleepiness), and phone usage characteristics (overall and pre-bedtime phone usage). Conclusion These data show that the combined use of three streams of data concerning sleep is complementary. Moreover, discrepancy patterns provide specific insights into sleep and peri-sleep behaviors facilitating digital phenotyping. Abstract:Background: Depression and anxiety are leading causes of disability worldwide but often remain undetected and untreated. Smartphone and wearable devices may offer a unique source of data to detect moment by moment changes in risk factors associated with mental disorders that overcome many of the limitations of traditional screening methods. Objective: The current study aimed to explore the extent to which data from smartphone and wearable devices could predict symptoms of depression and anxiety. Methods: A total of N = 60 adults (ages 24–68) who owned an Apple iPhone and Oura Ring were recruited online over a 2-week period. At the beginning of the study, participants installed the Delphi data acquisition app on their smartphone. The app continuously monitored participants' location (using GPS) and smartphone usage behavior (total usage time and frequency of use). The Oura Ring provided measures related to activity (step count and metabolic equivalent for task), sleep (total sleep time, sleep onset latency, wake after sleep onset and time in bed) and heart rate variability (HRV). In addition, participants were prompted to report their daily mood (valence and arousal). Participants completed self-reported assessments of depression, anxiety and stress (DASS-21) at baseline, midpoint and the end of the study. Results: Multilevel models demonstrated a significant negative association between the variability of locations visited and symptoms of depression (beta = −0.21, p = 0.037) and significant positive associations between total sleep time and depression (beta = 0.24, p = 0.023), time in bed and depression (beta = 0.26, p = 0.020), wake after sleep onset and anxiety (beta = 0.23, p = 0.035) and HRV and anxiety (beta = 0.26, p = 0.035). A combined model of smartphone and wearable features and self-reported mood provided the strongest prediction of depression. Conclusion: The current findings demonstrate that wearable devices may provide valuable sources of data in predicting symptoms of depression and anxiety, most notably data related to common measures of sleep.

Abstract:Studies related to mobile usage and mobile addiction have been explored in India. However, survey-based approaches have been used to conduct such studies. Such methods tend to have recall and bias issues. In contrast, mobile sensing utilizes smartphones' built-in sensors for assessing physical activity, sleep, and mobile usage. One manifestation of mobile sensing is digital phenotyping, a moment-by-moment in-situ inference of user behavior through smartphones. Such behavioral markers help understand or relate to mental health disorder symptoms. In this work, we present the findings of our study on mobile usage, physical activity, and sleep patterns of 52 students across two college campuses. We observed that the average mobile usage was around 8 h. The physical activity hours per day were around 4 h. The sleep hours were, on average, 5.5 h, and the sleep patterns were regular for most students barring a few. The significance of these findings lies in the fact that they can be used to map symptoms of mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and stress. Our work provides objective data and behavior analysis resulting in the emergence of social data science.
Predicting long-term sleep deprivation using wearable sensors and health surveys

Abstract:Sufficient sleep is essential for individual well-being. Inadequate sleep has been shown to have significant negative impacts on our attention, cognition, and mood. The measurement of sleep from in-bed physiological signals has progressed to where commercial devices already incorporate this functionality. However, the prediction of sleep duration from previous awake activity is less studied. Previous studies have used daily exercise summaries, actigraph data, and pedometer data to predict sleep during individual nights. Building upon these, this article demonstrates how to predict a person's long-term average sleep length over the course of 30 days from Fitbit-recorded physical activity data alongside self-report surveys. Recursive Feature Elimination with Random Forest (RFE-RF) is used to extract the feature sets used by the machine learning models, and sex differences in the feature sets and performances of different machine learning models are then examined. The feature selection process demonstrates that previous sleep patterns and physical exercise are the most relevant kind of features for predicting sleep. Personality and depression metrics were also found to be relevant. When attempting to classify individuals as being long-term sleep-deprived, good performance was achieved across both the male, female, and combined data sets, with the highest-performing model achieving an AUC of 0.9762. The best-performing regression model for predicting the average nightly sleep time achieved an R-squared of 0.6861, with other models achieving similar results. When attempting to predict if a person who previously was obtaining sufficient sleep would become sleep-deprived, the best-performing model obtained an AUC of 0.9448.
Examining Human-Smartphone Interaction as a Proxy for Circadian Rhythm in Patients With Insomnia: Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:Background: The sleep and circadian rhythm patterns associated with smartphone use, which are influenced by mental activities, might be closely linked to sleep quality and depressive symptoms, similar to the conventional actigraphy-based assessments of physical activity. Objective: The primary objective of this study was to develop app-defined circadian rhythm and sleep indicators and compare them with actigraphy-derived measures. Additionally, we aimed to explore the clinical correlations of these indicators in individuals with insomnia and healthy controls. Methods: The mobile app "Rhythm" was developed to record smartphone use time stamps and calculate circadian rhythms in 33 patients with insomnia and 33 age- and gender-matched healthy controls, totaling 2097 person-days. Simultaneously, we used standard actigraphy to quantify participants' sleep-wake cycles. Sleep indicators included sleep onset, wake time (WT), wake after sleep onset (WASO), and the number of awakenings (NAWK). Circadian rhythm metrics quantified the relative amplitude, interdaily stability, and intradaily variability based on either smartphone use or physical activity data. Results: Comparisons between app-defined and actigraphy-defined sleep onsets, WTs, total sleep times, and NAWK did not reveal any significant differences (all P >.05). Both app-defined and actigraphy-defined sleep indicators successfully captured clinical features of insomnia, indicating prolonged WASO, increased NAWK, and delayed sleep onset and WT in patients with insomnia compared with healthy controls. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores were positively correlated with WASO and NAWK, regardless of whether they were measured by the app or actigraphy. Depressive symptom scores were positively correlated with app-defined intradaily variability (β=9.786, SD 3.756; P =.01) and negatively correlated with actigraphy-based relative amplitude (β=–21.693, SD 8.214; P =.01), indicating disrupted circadian rhythmicity in individuals with depression. However, depressive symptom scores were negatively correlated with actigraphy-based intradaily variability (β=–7.877, SD 3.110; P =.01) and not significantly correlated with app-defined relative amplitude (β=–3.859, SD 12.352; P =.76). Conclusions: This study highlights the potential of smartphone-derived sleep and circadian rhythms as digital biomarkers, complementing standard actigraphy indicators. Although significant correlations with clinical manifestations of insomnia were observed, limitations in the evidence and the need for further research on predictive utility should be considered. Nonetheless, smartphone data hold promise for enhancing sleep monitoring and mental health assessments in digital health research.

Prevalence and Characteristics of Adverse Drug Reactions in Neurosurgical Intensive Care Patients

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence and characteristics of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in neurosurgical intensive care patients. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of ADR data obtained from a spontaneous reporting system in a tertiary care university hospital. Reports of suspected ADRs in adult patients admitted emergently or electively to the neurosurgical service were included. RESULTS: Over the 3 year period, 3496 neurosurgical intensive care unit (ICU) patient admissions accounted for 5% of all hospital admissions. A total of 10% of all neurosurgical patients developed a suspected ADR, with three patients experiencing multiple reactions. Other adult ICU patients developed ADRs at a comparable rate (9%, P > 0.05). Overall, neurosurgery patients accounted for 12% of all spontaneously reported ADRs. Preventable reactions were observed in 43 (13%) cases, and treatment was required for 76%. The majority (96%) of ADRs resolved or improved at the time of the ADR report. Nausea, pruritus, thrombocytopenia, and vomiting were most frequently noted. Therapies most often associated with reported events were analgesics, antipyretics, antibiotics, anticonvulsants, and histamine H2 antagonists. The relationship between central nervous system disease and adverse event occurrence is not clear. CONCLUSION: Despite the narrow scope of drug regimens in neurosurgical ICU patients, ADRs can complicate therapy in this critically ill population. Neurosurgical ICU patients seem to experience ADRs no more frequently than their adult ICU counterparts.
Trait-like nocturnal sleep behavior identified by combining wearable, phone-use, and self-report data

Abstract:Abstract Using polysomnography over multiple weeks to characterize an individual’s habitual sleep behavior while accurate, is difficult to upscale. As an alternative, we integrated sleep measurements from a consumer sleep-tracker, smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment, and user-phone interactions in 198 participants for 2 months. User retention averaged >80% for all three modalities. Agreement in bed and wake time estimates across modalities was high (rho = 0.81–0.92) and were adrift of one another for an average of 4 min, providing redundant sleep measurement. On the ~23% of nights where discrepancies between modalities exceeded 1 h, k-means clustering revealed three patterns, each consistently expressed within a given individual. The three corresponding groups that emerged differed systematically in age, sleep timing, time in bed, and peri-sleep phone usage. Hence, contrary to being problematic, discrepant data across measurement modalities facilitated the identification of stable interindividual differences in sleep behavior, underscoring its utility to characterizing population sleep and peri-sleep behavior.

Online Mobile App Usage as an Indicator of Sleep Behavior and Job Performance

Abstract:Sleep is critical to human function, mediating factors like memory, mood, energy, and alertness; therefore, it is commonly conjectured that a good night's sleep is important for job performance. However, both real-world sleep behavior and job performance are hard to measure at scale. In this work, we show that people's everyday interactions with online mobile apps can reveal insights into their job performance in real-world contexts. We present an observational study in which we objectively tracked the sleep behavior and job performance of salespeople (N = 15) and athletes (N = 19) for 18 months, using a mattress sensor and online mobile app. We first demonstrate that cumulative sleep measures are correlated with job performance metrics, showing that an hour of daily sleep loss for a week was associated with a 9.0% and 9.5% reduction in performance of salespeople and athletes, respectively. We then examine the utility of online app interaction time as a passively collectible and scalable performance indicator. We show that app interaction time is correlated with the performance of the athletes, but not the salespeople. To support that our app-based performance indicator captures meaningful variation in psychomotor function and is robust against potential confounds, we conducted a second study to evaluate the relationship between sleep behavior and app interaction time in a cohort of 274 participants. Using a generalized additive model to control for per-participant random effects, we demonstrate that participants who lost one hour of daily sleep for a week exhibited 5.0% slower app interaction times. We also find that app interaction time exhibits meaningful chronobiologically consistent correlations with sleep history, time awake, and circadian rhythms. Our findings reveal an opportunity for online app developers to generate new insights regarding cognition and productivity.

The critical path method to analyze and modify OR‐workflow: Integration of an image documentation system

Abstract:Intraoperative image documentation is becoming more and more important for quality management in medicine, in terms of forensic documentation, research and teaching. Up to now, no software‐based OR‐image‐documentation system fits satisfactorily into an OR‐workflow. The objective of this study is to transparently show system integration in a clinical workflow for evaluating demands on future system developments. An example of the OR‐workflow is presented for the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Tuebingen (Germany). Twelve representative gynecologic laparoscopic surgeries were analyzed by using the critical path method (CPM). CPM network diagrams are shown for an actual laparoscopic workflow and for a workflow including an OR‐image‐documentation system. With the objective not to increase the total time of actual workflow, the maximum system operation time can be calculated for each period of time. Before surgery the maximum system operation time is xmax = 7,3 minutes. After surgery it has to be assumed that system operation will increase total workflow time. Using the CPM to analyze requirements for system integration in a medical workflow has not yet been investigated. It is an appropriate method to transparently show integration possibilities and to define workflow‐based requirements for the development process of new systems.
A Mobile App to Identify Lifestyle Indicators Related to Undergraduate Mental Health (Smart Healthy Campus): Observational App-Based Ecological Momentary Assessment

Abstract:Background Undergraduate studies are challenging, and mental health issues can frequently occur in undergraduate students, straining campus resources that are already in demand for somatic problems. Cost-effective measures with ubiquitous devices, such as smartphones, offer the potential to deliver targeted interventions to monitor and affect lifestyle, which may result in improvements to student mental health. However, the avenues by which this can be done are not particularly well understood, especially in the Canadian context. Objective The aim of this study is to deploy an initial version of the Smart Healthy Campus app at Western University, Canada, and to analyze corresponding data for associations between psychosocial factors (measured by a questionnaire) and behaviors associated with lifestyle (measured by smartphone sensors). Methods This preliminary study was conducted as an observational app-based ecological momentary assessment. Undergraduate students were recruited over email, and sampling using a custom 7-item questionnaire occurred on a weekly basis. Results First, the 7-item Smart Healthy Campus questionnaire, derived from fully validated questionnaires—such as the Brief Resilience Scale; General Anxiety Disorder-7; and Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale–21—was shown to significantly correlate with the mental health domains of these validated questionnaires, illustrating that it is a viable tool for a momentary assessment of an overview of undergraduate mental health. Second, data collected through the app were analyzed. There were 312 weekly responses and 813 sensor samples from 139 participants from March 2019 to March 2020; data collection concluded when COVID-19 was declared a pandemic. Demographic information was not collected in this preliminary study because of technical limitations. Approximately 69.8% (97/139) of participants only completed one survey, possibly because of the absence of any incentive. Given the limited amount of data, analysis was not conducted with respect to time, so all data were analyzed as a single collection. On the basis of mean rank, students showing more positive mental health through higher questionnaire scores tended to spend more time completing questionnaires, showed more signs of physical activity based on pedometers, and had their devices running less and plugged in charging less when sampled. In addition, based on mean rank, students on campus tended to report more positive mental health through higher questionnaire scores compared with those who were sampled off campus. Some data from students found in or near residences were also briefly examined. Conclusions Given these limited data, participants tended to report a more positive overview of mental health when on campus and when showing signs of higher levels of physical activity. These early findings suggest that device sensors related to physical activity and location are useful for monitoring undergraduate students and designing interventions. However, much more sensor data are needed going forward, especially given the sweeping changes in undergraduate studies due to COVID-19.

Abstract:<h3>Purpose of Review</h3><p>Sleep is an important feature in mental illness. Smartphones can be used to assess and monitor sleep, yet there is little prior application of this approach in depressive, anxiety, or psychotic disorders. We review uses of smartphones and wearable devices for sleep research in patients with these conditions.</p><h3>Recent Findings</h3><p>To date, most studies consist of pilot evaluations demonstrating feasibility and acceptability of monitoring sleep using smartphones and wearable devices among individuals with psychiatric disorders. Promising findings show early associations between behaviors and sleep parameters and agreement between clinic-based assessments, active smartphone data capture, and passively collected data. Few studies report improvement in sleep or mental health outcomes.</p><h3>Summary</h3><p>Success of smartphone-based sleep assessments and interventions requires emphasis on promoting long-term adherence, exploring possibilities of adaptive and personalized systems to predict risk/relapse, and determining impact of sleep monitoring on improving patients' quality of life and clinically meaningful outcomes.</p>

SleepMore: Inferring Sleep Duration at Scale via Multi-Device WiFi Sensing

Abstract:The availability of commercial wearable trackers equipped with features to monitor sleep duration and quality has enabled more useful sleep health monitoring applications and analyses. However, much research has reported the challenge of long-term user retention in sleep monitoring through these modalities. Since modern Internet users own multiple mobile devices, our work explores the possibility of employing ubiquitous mobile devices and passive WiFi sensing techniques to predict sleep duration as the fundamental measure for complementing long-term sleep monitoring initiatives. In this paper, we propose SleepMore, an accurate and easy-to-deploy sleep-tracking approach based on machine learning over the user's WiFi network activity. It first employs a semi-personalized random forest model with an infinitesimal jackknife variance estimation method to classify a user's network activity behavior into sleep and awake states per minute granularity. Through a moving average technique, the system uses these state sequences to estimate the user's nocturnal sleep period and its uncertainty rate. Uncertainty quantification enables SleepMore to overcome the impact of noisy WiFi data that can yield large prediction errors. We validate SleepMore using data from a month-long user study involving 46 college students and draw comparisons with the Oura Ring wearable. Beyond the college campus, we evaluate SleepMore on non-student users of different housing profiles. Our results demonstrate that SleepMore produces statistically indistinguishable sleep statistics from the Oura ring baseline for predictions made within a 5% uncertainty rate. These errors range between 15-28 minutes for determining sleep time and 7-29 minutes for determining wake time, proving statistically significant improvements over prior work. Our in-depth analysis explains the sources of errors.
Mood ratings and digital biomarkers from smartphone and wearable data differentiates and predicts depression status: A longitudinal data analysis

Abstract:Depression is a prevalent mental disorder. Current clinical and self-reported assessment methods of depression are laborious and incur recall bias. Their sporadic nature often misses severity fluctuations. Previous research highlights the potential of in-situ quantification of human behaviour using mobile sensors to augment traditional methods of depression management. In this paper, we study whether self-reported mood scores and passive smartphone and wearable sensor data could be used to classify people as depressed or non-depressed. In a longitudinal study, our participants provided daily mood (valence and arousal) scores and collected data using their smartphones and Oura Rings. We computed daily aggregations of mood, sleep, physical activity, phone usage, and GPS mobility from raw data to study the differences between the depressed and non-depressed groups and created population-level Machine Learning classification models of depression. We found statistically significant differences in GPS mobility, phone usage, sleep, physical activity and mood between depressed and non-depressed groups. An XGBoost model with daily aggregations of mood and sensor data as predictors classified participants with an accuracy of 81.43% and an Area Under the Curve of 82.31%. A Support Vector Machine using only sensor-based predictors had an accuracy of 77.06% and an Area Under the Curve of 74.25%. Our results suggest that digital biomarkers are promising in differentiating people with and without depression symptoms. This study contributes to the body of evidence supporting the role of unobtrusive mobile sensor data in understanding depression and its potential to augment depression diagnosis and monitoring.

Abstract:This study emphasises the critical role of quality sleep in physical and mental well-being, exploring its impact on bodily recovery and cognitive function. Investigating poor sleep quality in approximately 40% of individuals with insomnia symptoms, the research delves into its potential diagnostic relevance for depression and anxiety, with a focus on intervention in mental health by understanding sleep patterns, especially in young individuals. This study includes an exploration of phone usage habits among young adults during PPI sessions, providing insights for developing the SleepTracker app. This pivotal tool utilises phone usage and movement data from mobile device sensors to identify indicators of anxiety or depression, with participant information organised comprehensively in a table categorising condition related to phone usage and movement data. The analysis compares this data with survey results, incorporating scores from the Sleep Condition Indicator (SCI), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and Generalised Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7). Generated confusion matrices offer a detailed overview of the relationship between sleep metrics, phone usage, and movement data. In summary, this study reveals the accurate detection of negative sleep disruption instances by the classifier. However, improvements are needed in identifying positive instances, reflected in the F1-score of 0.5 and a precision result of 0.33. While early intervention potential is significant, this study emphasises the need for a larger participant pool to enhance the model's performance.

Abstract:We describe a mobile health application that collects data relevant to the treatment of insomnia and other sleep-related problems. The application is based on the principles from neuroergonomics, which emphasizes assessment of the brain’s alertness system in everyday, naturalistic environments, and ubiquitous computing. Application benefits include the ability to incorporate both embedded data collection and retrospective manual data input—thus providing the user with a rewarding data access process. The retrospective data input feature was evaluated by comparing an older version of the retrospective editing interface with a newly developed one. The time course of user interactions was precisely measured by exporting time stamps of user interactions using the Google App Engine. We also developed models that closely fit the time course of user interactions using the Goals, Operators, Methods, and Selection rules (GOMS) modeling method. The user data and GOMS models demonstrated that the retrospective sleep tracking feature of the new interface was faster to use but that the retrospective habit tracking feature was slower. Survey results indicated that participants enjoyed using the newly developed interface more than the old interface for the assessment of both sleep and habits. These findings indicate that a mobile application should be designed not only to reduce the amount of time it takes a user to input data, but also to conform to the user’s mental models of its behavior.

Abstract:Abstract Study Objectives Nighttime smartphone use is an increasing public health concern. We investigated whether nighttime smartphone use is associated with general health and primary healthcare utilization. Methods Four thousand five hundred and twenty individuals (age 35.6 ± 9.7 years, 35% male) provided self-reported information on smartphone use frequency, symptoms of depression, and general health (one-item perceived health and cross-symptom composite score). A subset of the study sample (n = 3221) tracked their nighttime smartphone use. Primary healthcare utilization, i.e. the number of weeks in which at least one service from the patient’s general practitioner (GP) was billed in 2020, was extracted from Danish population registries. Statistical analysis comprised logistic and multiple linear regression, controlling for sociodemographics. Results Three hundred and nineteen individuals (7%) reported using their smartphone almost every night or more. More frequent self-reported nighttime smartphone use was associated with poor general health across all measures. Using the smartphone almost every night or more was associated with 2.8 [95% CI: 1.9, 4.1] fold higher odds of reporting poor health and with an average of 1.4 [95% CI: 0.7, 2.1] additional GP utilizations per year compared to no use. Associations were also found for the cross-symptom composite score across all symptoms. Further adjustment for symptoms of depression attenuated some associations. Smartphone use towards the end of the sleep period (sleep-offset use) was associated with poorer self-reported general health, but not with healthcare utilization. Conclusions Nighttime smartphone use frequency is associated with poor general health and healthcare utilization. Further studies should investigate the underlying causal structure and nighttime smartphone use as a transdiagnostic intervention target.

Nested threshold cell discarding for ATM overload control: optimization under cell loss constraints

Abstract:Overload control in asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks is dealt with via priority cell discarding mechanisms governed by a set of nested queue fill thresholds. An efficient search technique is developed which is applicable to any number of discarding priorities for determining the set of thresholds that optimize the offered load when constraints on cell loss (discarding) probabilities are specified. Results are presented as a function of queue capacity for given traffic distribution and arrival statistics. The results indicate that nested threshold discarding systems can support significantly higher traffic loads than systems without priorities. The sensitivity of the performance advantage to traffic mix and cell loss constraints is also illustrated. The efficient search procedure is shown to provide substantial computational gain when there are more than two discarding priorities.<<ETX>>

Abstract:Introduction Concerns abound on how digital technology such as smartphone use may impair adolescent sleep. Although these linkages are supported in cross‐sectional studies, research involving intensive longitudinal assessments and objective measures has called into question the robustness of associations. Methods In this study, a sample of ethnically diverse U.S. adolescents (N = 71; M age = 16.49; 56% girls) wore Fitbit devices and submitted screenshots of their smartphone screen time, pickups, and notifications over a 14‐day period in 2021. The Fitbits recorded nightly sleep quality and sleep onset. Adolescents also completed daily diaries reporting the previous night's sleep onset time and sleep quality. Results On days when adolescents engaged in greater nighttime screen time and, to some extent, pickups relative to their own average, they also had poorer sleep outcomes that night. Greater screen time was associated with later self‐reported and Fitbit‐recorded sleep onset and poorer self‐reported sleep quality. Greater pickups was associated with later self‐reported and Fitbit‐recorded sleep onset. Smartphone use during the day did not relate to sleep outcomes, indicating the importance of distinguishing nighttime from daytime use. Conclusions Parents and clinicians should help adolescents develop healthy digital skills to avoid exacerbating sleep problems that are known to occur during this developmental period.
