Abstract:Low-cost and highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are intensively investigated for overall water splitting. Herein, we combined experimental research with first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) to engineer the NiCo2S4@NiFe LDH heterostructure interface for enhancing overall water-splitting activity. The DFT calculations exhibit strong interaction and charge transfer between NiCo2S4 and NiFe LDH, which change the interfacial electronic structure and surface reactivity. The calculated chemisorption free energy of hydroxide (ΔEOH) is reduced from 1.56 eV for pure NiFe LDH to 1.03 eV for the heterostructures, indicating a dramatic improvement in OER performance, while the chemisorption free energy of hydrogen (ΔEH) maintains almost invariable. By the use of the facile hydrothermal method, NiCo2S4 nanotubes, NiFe LDH nanosheets, and NiCo2S4@NiFe LDH heterostructures are prepared on nickel foam, of which the corresponding experimental OER overpotentials are 306, 260, and 201 mV at 60 mA cm-2, respectively. These results are good agreement with the theoretical predictions. Meanwhile, the HER performance has little improvement, with an overpotential of about 200 mV at 10 mA cm-2. Due to the dramatic improvement in OER performance, there was an enhancement in the overall water-splitting activity of the NiCo2S4@NiFe LDH heterostructures, with a low voltage of 1.6 V.

Abstract:Electrochemical splitting of water is an efficient way to produce clean energy for energy storage and conversion devices. Herein, 3D hierarchical NiCo2O4@NiO@Ni core/shell nanocone arrays (NAs) are reported on Ni foam for stable overall water splitting with high efficiency. The architecture and composition of the 3D catalysts are particularly tuned. The outstanding structural and component features of the as-prepared 3D catalysts are characterized by the vertically grown NiCo2O4 nanocone/NiO nanosheet core/shell structure and Ni decorated 3D-conductive networks, which largely prompt the catalytic performance. The hybrid catalyst with core/shell nanocone array structures exhibits superior bifuncational activities for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with an overpotential of 240 and 120 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2), respectively. The Tafel slope of the optimal 3D electrode is about 43 and 58 mV dec(-1) in an alkaline electrolyte for OER and HER, respectively. An alkaline electrolyzer constructed by two symmetric NiCo2O4@NiO@Ni electrodes delivers splendid activity toward overall water splitting with a current of 10 mA cm(-2) at only approximate to 1.60 V and almost no deactivation after 10 h. This work provides a promising strategy to design ternary core/shell electrodes as high performance Janus catalysts for overall water splitting.
Fabrication of NiC/MoC/NiMoO4 Heterostructured Nanorod Arrays as Stable Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Efficient Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:Developing noble-metal-free, earth-abundant, highly active, and stable electrocatalysts with high efficiency for both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions is of great importance for the development of overall water-splitting devices, but still remains a challenging issue. Herein, a 3D heterostructured NiC/MoC/NiMoO4 electrocatalyst was prepared through a facile synthetic procedure. The electrocatalyst shows a superior catalytic activity and stability toward the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions. The optimized NiC/MoC/NiMoO4 catalyst presents low overpotentials of 68 and 280 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in 1.0 m KOH for the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, respectively. Assembled as an electrolyzer for overall water splitting, such a heterostructure shows quite a low cell voltage of 1.52 V at 10 mA cm-2 and remarkable stability for more than 20 h. This work provides a facile but efficient approach for the design and preparation of highly efficient bifunctional and self-supported heterostructured electrocatalysts that can serve as promising candidates in electrochemical energy storage and conversion.
Engineering heterostructured Ni@Ni(OH)2 core-shell nanomaterials for synergistically enhanced water electrolysis

Abstract:Heterostructure engineering of electrocatalysts provides a fascinating platform to reasonably manipulate the physicochemical properties of nanomaterials and further improve their catalytic efficiency for water electrolysis. However, it still remains a huge challenge to construct well-designed core-shell heterostructured catalysts and identify the key role of components for synergistic catalysis. Herein, a melted polymeric salt tactics was innovatively developed to synthesize heterostructured (OH)2 core-shell nanomaterials supported on porous carbon (named (OH)2/PC), wherein well-defined Ni(OH)2-Ni heterostructure plays a pivotal role in improving electrocatalytic activity for water reduction and oxidation. Besides, the stable porous carbon support functions as a highway for continuous electron transfer between Ni and Ni(OH)2, and simultaneously enables the full exposure of accessible active sites. The fabricated (OH)2/PC exhibits outstanding bifunctional electrocatalytic performance for overall water splitting (ƞ10 = 1.55 V) with a good long-time stability. Abstract:The rational design of high-active, stable, and inexpensive bifunctional transition-metal-based electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a crucial challenge to achieve efficient hydrogen production via overall water splitting. Herein, we fabricate core-shell heterostructure nanoparticles by electrodepositing ultrathin amorphous CoFe hydroxides on crystalline Mo-doped Ni 3 S 2 with nickel foam as substrate (Mo-Ni 3 S 2 /CoFeOH/NF). The results of physical characterizations and electrochemical measurements show the unique Mo-Ni 3 S 2 /CoFeOH/NF heterostructure material contributes to optimized electron structure, low charge transfer resistance, and high electrochemical active surface area. Finally, the Mo-Ni 3 S 2 /CoFeOH/NF displays excellent performance to achieve 10 mA/cm 2 with a low overpotential of 109 mV for HER and 246 mV for OER, and only needs 1.51 V for overall water splitting. This work provides a new perspective for interface engineering of superior electrocatalysts toward hydrogen production.

Hierarchical porous bimetal-sulfide bi-functional nanocatalysts for hydrogen production by overall water electrolysis

Abstract:Electrocatalytic water splitting using bi-functional catalysts is one of the most promising approaches for clean hydrogen fuel production. To address shortcomings of the existing catalysts, here we develop a new bi-functional catalysts cobalt-based nano-architecture with ordered, Ni-doped two-dimensional (2D) defect-rich nanosheets. Innovative combination of doping, annealing, and sulfidation is developed to fabricate the hierarchical porous metal sulfide (denoted as Ni-Co-S) nanosheets arrays (HPNA) directly on conductive carbon cloth (CC). Owing to the unique architecture with the specific surface area and porous structure, short ion diffusion paths, the Ni-Co-S HPNA exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activitiy for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline solution, featuring low overpotentials of 110 and 270 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2, respectively. The excellent catalytic performance is attributed to the unique porous structure, abundant active sites and efficient mass transport. More importantly, when the Ni-Co-S HPNA serves as both the anode and cathode, it achieves a 1.62 V at 10 mA cm-2 and remains stable over 12 h of the overall water splitting process. This work opens new avenues for rational design of high-efficiency and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts for water electrolysis and a broader range of clean energy and sustainable chemistry applications.
Interfaces modulation strategy to synthesize bifunctional electrocatalyst for highly efficient overall water splitting

Abstract:The synthesis of high efficient bifunctional non-noble metal electrocatalysts for overall water splitting is crucial for sustainable energy conversion. Here, a free-standing and heterointerfaces-rich fluffy rectangular spongy-like core-shell NiS/CoS/CC-3 bifunctional electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is designed and synthesized by optimizing the thickness of the NiS shell. The electrochemical performance of the NiS/CoS/CC-3 electrocatalyst is investigated in alkaline solutions. Benefiting from the unique rectangular spongy-like structural features, the abundant heterointerfaces between NiS and CoS, as well as the good synergy between its each component, the obtained NiS/CoS/CC-3 catalyst shows outstanding electrocatalytic activities and stability for both HER and OER. The overpotential is 102 mV for HER and 290 mV for OER at 10 mA cm-2, respectively. Moreover, the two-electrode electrolyzer with NiS/CoS/CC-3 as both the cathode and anode catalyst in alkaline solution achieves a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a potential of 1.57 V. Meanwhile, the electrolyzer shows outstanding electrochemistry durability with an unchanged current density for 72 h. The results illustrate that the as-prepared heterointerfaces-rich NiS/CoS/CC-3 electrocatalyst can be used as a high-efficiency catalyst for overall water splitting (OWS). This synthetic strategy is also important for other composite materials in a variety of energy-related application fields.

Abstract:Low-cost, highly active and earth-abundant bifunctional electrocatalyst is very important for the large-scale hydrogen production by water splitting. In the present work, we report a novel two-step method to fabricate three-dimensional (3D) porous catalyst for water splitting. The Ni3Se2 nanowires are in-situ formed on Ni foam (NF) by simple hydrothermal method, subsequently NiFe layered double hydroxid (NiFe-LDH) nanosheets vertically grow on the nanowires to form core-shell structure. The as-formed Ni3Se2@NiFe-LDH/NF catalyst shows 3D porous structure, which can provide large specific surface area and effective substance transfers. The tight bonding between Ni3Se2 nanowires and NiFe-LDH nanosheets ensures good electron transfer. The Ni3Se2@NiFe-LDH/NF catalyst exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic property for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in an alkaline medium. The overpotentianls for HER and OER at the current density of 10 mA cm-2 in 1 M KOH are 68 mV and 222 mV, respectively. For overall water splitting, a small cell voltage of 1.55 V can achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in 1 M KOH. This work provides a guidance for the rational design and development of heterostructure electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Cobalt-based Co$_3$Mo3N/Co$_4$N/Co Metallic Heterostructure as a Highly Active Electrocatalyst for Alkaline Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:Alkaline water electrolysis is considered a commercially viable option for large-scale hydrogen production. However, this process still faces challenges due to the high voltage (>1.65 V at 10 mA cm$^{-2}$) and its limited stability at higher current densities due to the inefficient electron transport kinetics. Herein, a novel cobalt based metallic heterostructure (Co$_3$Mo3N/Co$_4$N/Co/Co) is designed for application for water electrolysis. Operando Raman experiments reveal that the formation of Co$_3$Mo3N/Co$_4$N/Co heterointerface boosts the free water adsorption and dissociation, resulting in a surplus of protons available for subsequent hydrogen production. Furthermore, the altered electronic structure of Co$_3$Mo3N/Co$_4$N/Co heterointerface optimizes the {\Delta}GH of nitrogen atoms at the interface. This synergistic effect between interfacial nitrogen atoms and metal phase cobalt creates highly efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) active sites, thereby enhancing the overall performance. Additionally, the heterostructure exhibits a rapid OH- adsorption rate, coupled with a strong adsorption strength, leading to improved oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. Crucially, the metallic heterojunction facilitates fast electron transport, expediting the aforementioned reaction steps and ultimately improving the overall efficiency of water splitting. The water electrolyzer with Co$_3$Mo3N/Co$_4$N/Co/Co as a catalyst exhibits outstanding performance, requiring an impressively low cell voltage of 1.58 V at 10 mA cm$^{-2}$ and maintaining approximately 100% retention over a remarkable 100 h duration at 200 mA cm$^{-2}$. This performance significantly exceeds that of the commercial Pt/C || RuO2 electrolyzer.

Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting provides a prominent route towards clean energy conversion and storage, while unsuitable catalysts restrict its application. Core–shell hierarchical heterostructure materials with strong synergistic effects based on non-noble metal elements have been developed to compensate for inadequacy. In this work, a core–shell hierarchical heterostructure Co9S8/Ni3S2@NiFe-LDH electrocatalyst was prepared via hydrothermal and electrodeposition methods. The resultant Co9S8/Ni3S2@NiFe-120 electrocatalyst consists of Co9S8 substrates as the core and NiFe-LDHs as the shell, and exhibits excellent overall water splitting electrocatalytic activity with a low overpotential of 229 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and 151 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and a full cell voltage of 1.62 V at 10 mA cm−2 current density. The core–shell heterostructure constructed by electrodeposition endows the catalyst with outstanding stability and low degradation in long-term catalytic processes as shown by continuous chronopotentiometry tests at current densities of 50, 100 and 200 mA cm−2 for 72 h. The as-prepared core–shell hierarchically heterostructural Co9S8/Ni3S2@NiFe-120 with high-efficiency and good-durability is a promising bifunctional electrocatalyst towards practical applications in overall water splitting.
Synergistic Interfacial and Doping Engineering of Heterostructured NiCo(OH)x-CoyW as an Efficient Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Electrocatalyst

Abstract:Abstract To achieve high efficiency of water electrolysis to produce hydrogen (H 2 ), developing non-noble metal-based catalysts with considerable performance have been considered as a crucial strategy, which is correlated with both the interphase properties and multi-metal synergistic effects. Herein, as a proof of concept, a delicate NiCo(OH) x -Co y W catalyst with a bush-like heterostructure was realized via gas-template-assisted electrodeposition, followed by an electrochemical etching-growth process, which ensured a high active area and fast gas release kinetics for a superior hydrogen evolution reaction, with an overpotential of 21 and 139 mV at 10 and 500 mA cm −2 , respectively. Physical and electrochemical analyses demonstrated that the synergistic effect of the NiCo(OH) x /Co y W heterogeneous interface resulted in favorable electron redistribution and faster electron transfer efficiency. The amorphous NiCo(OH) x strengthened the water dissociation step, and metal phase of CoW provided sufficient sites for moderate H immediate adsorption/H 2 desorption. In addition, NiCo(OH) x -Co y W exhibited desirable urea oxidation reaction activity for matching H 2 generation with a low voltage of 1.51 V at 50 mA cm −2 . More importantly, the synthesis and testing of the NiCo(OH) x -Co y W catalyst in this study were all solar-powered, suggesting a promising environmentally friendly process for practical applications.

Abstract:Developing non-precious metal-based bifunctional electrocatalysts capable for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential to achieve efficient water electrolysis for mass hydrogen production, however it remains challenging. Here, we report the synthesis of hierarchical nanorod arrays comprising core–shell structured P-doped NiMoO 4 @NiFe-coordination polymer (denoted as P-NiMoO 4 @NiFeCP) as bifunctional electrocatalysts for water electrolysis. Furthermore, we systematically investigate the influence of NiFeCP shell thickness on electrocatalytic activity, manifesting the presence of strong interfacial synergetic effect between P-NiMoO 4 and NiFeCP for boosting both the HER and OER. With advantageous hierarchical architectures and unique core–shell structures, optimized P-NiMoO 4 @NiFeCP-7.3 (7.3 is the shell thickness in nm) requires overpotentials of merely 256 and 297 mV to yield a current density of 1000 mA·cm −2 for the HER and OER in 1 M KOH, respectively. More importantly, it can serve as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for efficient and sustainable overall water electrolysis, delivering large current densities of 500 and 1000 mA·cm −2 at low cell voltages of 1.804 and 1.865 V, along with high stability of over 500 h at 1000 mA·cm −2 , demonstrating the great potential of this electrocatalyst towards practical applications.

Abstract:The hierarchical electrodes with 1D nanowires and 2D nanosheets as well as the synergistic interaction between CoO and CoP heterojunctions enable strong electronic interactions. It can achieve high current density over 400 mA cm−2 at low overpotentials and have exceptionally efficient electrocatalytic activity as well as long‐term durability for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) under alkaline conditions toward overall water splitting. Bifunctional electrocatalysts with superior activity and durability are of great importance for electrocatalytic water splitting. Herein, hierarchical structured CoO/CoP heterojunctions are successfully designed as highly efficient and freestanding bifunctional electrocatalysts toward overall water splitting. The unique microstructure combining two‐dimensional nanosheets with one‐dimensional nanowires enables numerous exposed active sites, shortened ion‐diffusion pathways, and enhanced conductivity, significantly improving performance. Such freestanding electrodes achieve high current density over 400 mA cm−2 at low overpotentials and have exceptional electrocatalytic activity as well as long‐term durability for both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions under alkaline conditions. Remarkably, a high current density of 20 mA cm−2 is generated at a low cell voltage of 1.56 V in an alkaline water electrolyzer, originating from synergistic interactions between CoO and CoP exposing active sites and facilitating charge transfer and enhancing kinetics. This work provides new insight into designing low‐cost but high‐performance bifunctional electrocatalysts for practical water splitting.

Abstract:Alkaline water electrolysis holds promise for large-scale hydrogen production, yet it encounters challenges like high voltage and limited stability at higher current densities, primarily due to inefficient electron transport kinetics. Herein, a novel cobalt-based metallic heterostructure (Co3Mo3N/Co4N/Co) is designed for excellent water electrolysis. In operando Raman experiments reveal that the formation of the Co3Mo3N/Co4N heterointerface boosts the free water adsorption and dissociation, increasing the available protons for subsequent hydrogen production. Furthermore, the altered electronic structure of the Co3Mo3N/Co4N heterointerface optimizes ΔGH of the nitrogen atoms at the interface. This synergistic effect between interfacial nitrogen atoms and metal phase cobalt creates highly efficient active sites for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), thereby enhancing the overall HER performance. Additionally, the heterostructure exhibits a rapid OH- adsorption rate, coupled with great adsorption strength, leading to improved oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. Crucially, the metallic heterojunction accelerates electron transport, expediting the afore-mentioned reaction steps and enhancing water splitting efficiency. The Co3Mo3N/Co4N/Co electrocatalyst in the water electrolyzer delivers excellent performance, with a low 1.58 V cell voltage at 10 mA cm-2, and maintains 100% retention over 100 hours at 200 mA cm-2, surpassing the Pt/C || RuO2 electrolyzer.

3D Hierarchical Heterostructure Assembled by NiFe LDH/(NiFe)Sx on Biomass-Derived Hollow Carbon Microtubes As Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:Developing highly active and stable noble-metal-free bifunctional electrocatalysts for both hydrogen and oxygen evolution is still a challenge in electrochemical water splitting technology. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D)-networked heterogeneous electrocatalyst in the form of vertically aligned NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanoflakes coupled with Fe-doped NiSx nanoparticles is supported on biomass-derived carbon microtubes (CMT). The optimal hybrid electrode exhibits superior electrocatalytic activity with low overpotentials of 210 and 157 mV to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 1 M KOH, respectively. It is revealed that the remarkable features of the catalyst lie in the unique 3D open configuration, the high conductivity of CMT support and the strong interfacial coupling effects between NiFe LDH and (NiFe)S-x, giving rise to enhanced active sites, accelerating electron/ion transport, and further promoting reaction kinetics of OER/HER. Furthermore, an alkaline water electrolyzer is constructed with the NiFe LDH/(NiFe)S-x/CMT composite as catalyst for both anode and cathode. This electrolyzer displays excellent electrolysis performance (affording 10 mA cm(-2) at 1.53 V) and long-term durability over 100 h. This work demonstrates a strategy in preparing bifunctional and cost-efficient electrocatalysts with potential application in the future. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Construction of 3D Hollow NiCo-layered Double Hydroxide Nanostructures for High-Performance Industrial Overall Seawater Electrolysis

Abstract:Green hydrogen production via seawater electrolysis holds a great promise for carbon-neutral energy production. However, the development of efficient and low-cost bifunctional electrocatalysts for seawater electrolysis at an industrial level remains a significant challenge. Herein, we report a facile approach based on one-dimensional (1D) cobalt carbonate hydroxide (CCH) nanoneedles (NNs) as skeleton and zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) as a sacrificial template to construct a self-supported NiCo layered double hydroxide (NiCo LDH) heterostructure nanocage (CCH@NiCo LDH) anchoring on the carbon felt (CF). The NiCo LDHs have hollow features, consisting of ultrathin layered hydroxide nanosheets. Benefiting from the structural advantages, unique carbon substrate and desirable composition, three-dimensional (3D) NiCo LDH nanocages exhibit superior performance as a bifunctional catalyst for overall seawater splitting at an industrial level and good corrosion resistance in alkaline media. In the alkaline seawater (1 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl), it exhibits low overpotentials of 356 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 433 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at 400 mA·cm−2, much better than most of reported non-noble metal catalysts. Consequently, the obtained CF electrode loading of CCH@NiCo LDH exhibits outstanding performance as anodes and cathodes for overall alkaline seawater splitting, with remarkably low cell voltages of 1.56 and 1.89 V at current densities of 10 and 400 mA·cm−2, respectively. Moreover, the robust stability of 100 h is also demonstrated at above 200 mA·cm−2 in alkaline seawater. Our present work demonstrates significant potential for constructing effective cost-efficient and non-noble-metal bifunctional electrocatalyst and electrode for industrial seawater splitting.
A NiCo2O4 Shell on a Hollow Ni Nanorod Array Core for Water Splitting with Enhanced Electrocatalytic Performance

Abstract:Nickel cobaltite (NiCo2O4) nanostructures have been considered as promising bifunctional electrocatalyst materials for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline electrolyte. However, the activity of these materials toward overall water splitting is still unsatisfactory because a larger voltage is needed to drive the reactions. This study shows that more-efficient bifunctional catalysts based on NiCo2O4 materials can be obtained by adopting an integrated composite electrode with robust hollow structures. This novel electrode is constructed by the growth of hollow Ni@NiCo2O4 nanorod arrays on three-dimensional (3D) Ni foam. The interlayer of Ni hollow nanorods is conformally covered by NiCo2O4 nanosheets, providing large surface area and fast electron transport. Benefiting from these integrated characteristics, the hollow Ni@NiCo2O4 electrode as an oxygen evolution electrocatalyst can deliver a low overpotential of 270mV at 10mAcm(-2) and present excellent electrochemical durability. Meanwhile, the HER performance also impressive, with an overpotential of about 87mV at 10mAcm(-2). As a result, the hollow Ni@NiCo2O4 electrode as a bifunctional catalyst can achieve a current density of 10mAcm(-2) with a voltage of only 1.58V, showing promise for high performance yet cheap electrocatalysts for the overall water splitting reactions.

Abstract:The development of transition metal bifunctional electrocatalysts with high activity, stability and cost-effectiveness is necessary for the overall water decomposition. In this work, a phosphorylated core–shell heterostructure bifunctional catalytic material with a nickel foam carrier, a Co(OH)2 nanowire array core and an ultrathin NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) shell is synthesized. The solid contact between the NiFe-LDH shell and the highly conductive Co(OH)2 core brings about excellent electrical connectivity and an integrated hierarchical nanostructure that greatly improves the active specific surface area. Meanwhile, the phosphorylated hierarchical core–shell nanostructure enables the presence of a large amount of amorphous material at the edges, which leads to excellent activity and stability for oxygen evolution reactions (OER) and hydrogen evolution reactions (HER).

Abstract:The realization of efficient water electrolysis is still blocked by the requirement for a high and stable driving potential above thermodynamic requirements. An Ni-based electrocatalyst, is a promising alternative for noble-metal-free electrocatalysts but tuning its surface electronic structure and exposing more active sites are the critical challenges to improving its intrinsic catalytic activity. Here, we tackle the challenge by tuning surface electronic structures synergistically with interfacial chemistry and crystal facet engineering, successfully designing and synthesizing the carbon-encapsulated Ni (111)/Ni3C (113) heterojunction electrocatalyst, demonstrating superior hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activities, good stabilities with a small overpotential of −29 mV at 10 mA/cm2, and a low Tafel slope of 59.96 mV/dec in alkaline surroundings, approximating a commercial Pt/C catalyst and outperforming other reported Ni-based catalysts. The heterostructure electrocatalyst operates at 1.55 V and 1.26 V to reach 10 and 1 mA cm−2 in two-electrode measurements for overall alkaline water splitting, corresponding to 79% and 98% electricity-to-fuel conversion efficiency with respect to the lower heating value of hydrogen.
