Abstract:The economic development and population growth along with the contradiction of the resources and the environment has become a serious concern in mining regions in India. Sustainable mining practices can protect the environment from these hazardous industrial and human interventions. The aspects and prospects of Indian coal mining industry using GIS and remote sensing has helped in designing a framework concerning sustainable development. Hence, the present research aims towards the integration of sustainable development in coal mining operations along with its optimization, measurement and development using GIS and remote sensing techniques. A descriptive research strategy is followed that evolves designing and describing the mindset of the chosen respondents towards the framework of sustainable mining in India by incorporating techniques like GIS and remote sensing. In order to fulfil these objectives, the study adopts a quantitative research approach by using primary data collection method through a survey method using questionnaires as a research tool. The total sample size in this study that has been approached is between 150 to 200 people. The respondents are the stakeholders and the head committee members. Descriptive analysis and comparative correlation analysis with hypothesis testing have been used for analyzing the results in the study. This study has brought a better understanding of the aspects and prospects of designing a framework concerning the sustainable development for the coal mining industry in India. The challenges evolved in this development have addressed sustainability concerns that have supported the development of coal mine sectors in India. The future work should focus on more techniques for monitoring the environmental status for the development and production of coal mine business in India.
Coupling and coordination of coal mining intensity and social-ecological resilience in China

Abstract:Coal is an important global energy resource. However, the negative impacts of mining are important factors restricting the sustainable development of mining areas. Under the superimposed influences of different mining intensities, different natural ground conditions, and social-economic development, there are large differences in the restoration characteristics and response strategies for mining. To guide the development and utilization of coal resources and ecological restoration, the spatial distribution should be appropriately analyzed at the macroscale. Based on the web-crawler technology and multi-source remote sensing data, this paper attempted to estimate the mining intensity and the social-ecological resilience respectively at the county level, to divide the mining areas into nine regions in China. Based on the zoning results, differentiated strategies were proposed for ecological restoration and resource development and utilization in the various coal mining regions. The valuation results suggested that coal mines are widely distributed and abundant in China, mainly concentrated in the central, southwest and northwest regions. However, nearly half of the coal mining regions are with low resilience. Especially, high mining intensity-low resilience areas are concentrated in north China which account for 10.83%. These areas should receive special attention to prevent possible ecological risks and minimize economic effects. Social-ecological resilience measures system adaptation to coal mining disturbances, which can be regarded as the standard of mining intensity adjustment. In the future, local governments can try to combine ecological restoration and resource development strategies to provide support for the sustainable development of coal mining areas in China.
A Quantitative Assessment of Vulnerability Using Social-Economic-natural Compound Ecosystem Framework in Coal Mining Cities

Abstract:Coal resources play an important role in socioeconomic development around the world. Yet the development driven by coal mining is accompanied by ecological damage, social instability, and economic vulnerability, which seriously hinder the sustainable development of coal mining cities. It is, thus, urgent to realize the sustainable development of coal mining cities, premised on comprehensive and scientific analysis of these cities’ vulnerability characteristics. In this study, based on the analysis of the social-economic-natural compound ecosystem (SENCE), we constructed a vulnerability evaluation indicator system (28 indicators) for coal mining cities. Took cities producing more than ten million ton of coal in China in 2015 as examples, the weight of every indicator was obtained using entropy weight method. In addition, cities were ranked and classified based on vulnerability characteristics of three subsystems. The reasons for subsystem vulnerability in different regions were analyzed. The results showed that industrial smoke and dust emissions, elevation, proportion of the area containing coal are the main reason for natural vulnerability. Unemployment rate of urban employees, and mining workers as a proportion of the secondary industry workforce are the main cause to social vulnerability. Self-sufficiency rate of local finance, and value of secondary industries as a proportion of GDP are the main indicators leading to economic vulnerability. Our findings suggest that preventing soil erosion, accelerating the resolution of historical problems, promoting green mining, and encouraging renewable energy should be adopted to reduce natural vulnerability; resettling the unemployed and adjusting employment structure are effective in enhancing the sustainability of social subsystems; changing industrial structure, encouraging self-employment, as well as implementing scientific and technological innovation should be considered to realize economic sustainability.

Abstract:The mining industry, critical for global resource supply, has historically been linked to significant environmental degradation and social challenges, including habitat disruption, water and soil contamination, as well as fatalities. But recently, the industry has been undergoing a transformative change to meet evolving environmental and societal expectations. Operations Research (OR) provides essential tools and techniques to optimize decision-making processes in this context. This paper presents a comprehensive review of different OR methods and their applications in balancing economic, social, and environmental objectives in surface mine planning. Of the 63 papers reviewed, 45 were published by researchers from three main countries: Canada, the United States, and Australia, with 73% of these papers appearing in journals. This review highlighted that linear programming (LP), dynamic programming (DP), Lagrangian relaxation (LR), stochastic programming, and metaheuristics are among the most widely applied methods in surface mine planning within a sustainable development (SD) context. By evaluating the strengths and limitations of these techniques, this review offers valuable insights for researchers and practitioners aiming to improve production efficiency and sustainability through advanced planning strategies.

Abstract:Coal supplies essential materials for social development. In many cases, however, the separation planning of underground coal mining (UCM) and mine reclamation (MR) and "mining first, reclamation later" lead to the accumulation of land degradation. Thus, the integrated planning of UCM and MR needs to be studied urgently. In this study, concurrent mining and reclamation (CMR) technologies were adopted to divide UCM planning into four key steps from the space-time scale: i) development roadway (macro); ii) preparation roadway (moderate); iii) mining roadway (meso) and iv) working face (micro), and the impacts of mining steps on MR were discussed. In addition, the requirements of four-key links of MR for UCM were discussed: i) reclamation elevation (RE); ii) digging depth (DD); iii) reclamation layout (RL), and iv) reclamation timing (RT). UCM and MR were optimized on macro, moderate, meso, and micro scales. Results show that: (1) RE and DD are moderate and meso scales; (2) RL is macro and moderate scales; (3) RT is meso and micro scales. Integrated planning of UCM and MR can reduce mining damage from the source, which can timely reclaim degraded land, and alleviate the contradictions of the government, colliery and farmer. We hope CMR will be valued to jointly improve application scenarios and guide sustainable mining.

A Sustainable Approach to Transforming Mining Waste into Value-Added Products

Abstract:Mine waste is usually considered worthless in the subsequent stages of mineral production; but it will become valuable in the future and will be needed for the ever-increasing demand of society. Over several decades, large-scale extraction of minerals to cater ever-increasing demand for the growing global population has generated enormous mining wastes, polluted water bodies and air thereby leaving a deleterious effect on the environment. Each year, several billion tons of solid waste is generated worldwide by mining industries as mine byproducts during all types of mining activities, particularly drilling, blasting, and transportation for the extraction of the desired products. The mining wastes are generated at every step of activity, depending on the type of mining method, type of ore, the geological set-up and processing techniques adopted. It is estimated that about a million ton of ore and waste is generated from the large-scale mines per day, and a couple of thousand tons generates from small-scale mines per day. As per an estimate, mining of 1 ton of coal generates approximately 0.4 tons of waste and tailings. Similarly, the production of 1 ton of copper generates approximately 110 tons of waste and 200 tons removal of overburden. Besides, over 500 million tons of mill tailings is generated per year from various ore concentration processes (e.g., lead-zinc, copper, iron). Therefore, the adoption of optimal waste management strategies is sorely needed for the efficient recycling of large quantities of mining waste products generated each year from hundreds of mining operations across the country (or worldwide). In this study, we present a critical overview of solid wastes in mining and the optimal waste management strategy including legal remedies and economic constraints. A holistic approach to end-to-end mining processes to understand and frame the waste management strategy is needed for reducing the risk and maximizing the resource potential.

Abstract:Ventilation is critical in underground coal mining (UCM) for safety and productivity. Challenges include mitigating hazardous gases, preventing coal dust accumulation, and achieving a balance between extraction efficiency and environmental concerns. Optimization techniques address these challenges, aiming for enhanced safety, productivity, and sustainability. But, these algorithms need careful tuning and adaptation to dynamic mine conditions to prevent suboptimal solutions and ensure robust optimization performance. Hence, in this research work, a hybrid optimization-based control system is proposed for energy consumption minimization of mine ventilation fan and load management in UCM. The proposed hybrid optimization process is formulated into multi-objective optimization solutions like energy-saving optimization and load management in coal mines. The proposed hybrid optimization technique is the combination of both the Border Collie optimization (BCO) and Aquila optimizer (AO), and hence, it is named as BCOAO technique. At first, based on the ventilation on demand (VOD), the energy consumption is minimized using BCO technique and obtains the optimal main fan speed profile. With this procedure, the energy saving is improved as a consequence, healthy atmosphere with higher performance in the mines. Secondly, based on the time of use (TOU) tariff, the mining schedule starting time is found and analyzed in the load management using AO technique. The performance is carried out in the MATLAB platform and tested with three case studies. The overall energy saving percentage obtained by the proposed hybrid technique for three cases are 25, 38, and 54.5%, respectively.

Abstract:For millennium, mining sector is a source not only of mineral extraction for industrialization, economic expansion, and urban sprawling, but also of socio-environmental concern. It, therefore, has been the central attention of the business and public policy sustainable development scheme for several years. Thus, gradually, mining industries are getting involved with the concerns such as carbon emissions mitigation and carbon accounting to govern a rhetorical shift towards "sustainable mining". However, there is scarce knowledge about how the emergence of a "green and self-sustaining" forestry reclamation strategy coupled with potential carbon sequestration capacity in degraded mining areas will be an impeccable option for achieving sustainable development goal-13 (SDG-13: climate action) and ecosystem services during United Nation decade of ecosystem restoration. This paper reviews the extent to which reforestation and sustainable land management practices that employed to enhance ecosystem carbon pool and atmospheric CO 2 sequestration capacity to offset CO 2 emission and SOC (soil organic carbon) losses, as consequences of coal mining, to partially mitigate global climate crisis. Moreover, future research is required on mining innovation concepts and its challenges for designing an SDG impact framework, so that it not only synergies amongst SDGs, but also trade-offs between each individual "politically legitimized post-2015 development agenda" (i.e. UNSDGs) could be depicted in a systematic way. In a developing country like India, it is also an utmost need to assess the environmental impact and economic performance of such technological innovation and its possible synergistic effect.

Abstract:Large-scale mining activities have induced numerous non-negligible eco-geological environmental issues that seriously threaten regional ecological security. Construction and optimization of an ecological security pattern (ESP) can aid coordination of mineral resource development and ecological protection. An innovative method was proposed to construct and optimize ESP, which used ecosystem "function-dynamics-structure" conceptual framework, disaster disturbance risk index, incorporating ecosystem services importance index into minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) theory (MCRS) model, and gravity model. Specifically, ecological sources are quantitatively cataloged using ecosystem "function-dynamics-structure" conceptual framework. Ecological resistance surface is revised using the disaster disturbance risk index. Ecological corridors are extracted using the MCRS model. Regulation zones are defined by combining the optimized ESP with gravity model. The optimized ESP in Shuozhou city, China includes 67 ecological nodes, 625.97 km2 of primary ecological sources, 83.87 km2 of secondary ecological sources, 534.18 km of primary ecological corridors, and 282.28 km of secondary ecological corridors. These form the spatial pattern of "two horizontal, four vertical and four circles", which will be used to maintain ecological process continuity and ecological flow within the study area. Corresponding suggestions are proposed to guide the planning of each regulation zone. The restrictive, protective, and suitable development zone areas are 1131.72 km2, 4255.47 km2 and 5238.93 km2, respectively. This methodology is not only suitable for determination of ESPs in coal mining areas, but also provides an approach, i.e., ecosystem "function-dynamics-structure" conceptual framework and MCRS model, that can be used to coordinate sustainable resource exploitation and ecological protection worldwide.

Abstract:Green and climate smart mining (GCSM) is a recent advancement in mining that not only alleviates the exacerbating environmental and climate-related impacts but also protects the well-being of the communities in the mining regions. However, there is still a long way to transform current mining practices into GCSM due to many challenges hampering its implementation process. This study applied a three-phase systematic research approach to develop a decision support system to recognize and eradicate these challenges through persuasive strategic pathways. In the first phase, a combination of extensive literature review and the fuzzy Delphi method identifies 9 pathways to overcome 24 challenges divided into five broad categories. The second phase involves an integrated fuzzy decision analysis approach to rank all the challenges, explore their interrelationships, and prioritize the pathways. Finally, the sensitivity analysis is conducted for pathways prioritization against each of the five categories of challenges. The proposed system is illustrated by conducting a case study of the Chinese mining industry to verify its utility and applicability. Analysis unveiled challenges related to government and regulatory and technical and operational categories as the most critical to hamper GCSM implementation, which can be overcome through three best pathways, including low-interest loans and subsidies, cognitive development, and strict codes for newer enterprises. This research is a novel contribution to building connections between mining and sustainability science that provides a comprehensive insight for mining affiliated professionals to implement and promote GCSM, which has not yet been presented in the existing literature.

Abstract:Process optimization is acutely vital: mining and a metal industries research. Through applying modelling and optimization tools, businesses see tremendous improvement in process efficiencies, declining costs of production, and ensuring high quality. The valuable of simulation tools have also been reflected in the design of the virtual plants which make possible to conduct test runs of different process scenarios thereby providing the opportunity to optimize the performance of the plants. So, even if these issues are close to being resolved, some challenges must still be tackled to approach the full field of process optimization enjoyment. One of the main drawbacks is the integration of sustainable development and environmental evaluation into optimization phase. This can be achieved by developing models that are amended to an environmental impact of each process parameters and afterwards an optimization of processes will be based on environment factors. The second challenge is for the research community to come up with more advanced and sophisticated mathematical models that are capable of not only capturing but also depicting the diverse and complex interactions that take place between different processes variables. Such an approach indeed requires implementation of more precise data analysis tools and techniques, including neural networks and genetic algorithms. While there are many difficulties in it way, the process optimization of a bright future is foreseeable. The fast growth of the technological sphere, such as machine-2-machine and big data analytics, enables process optimization which was unavailable before. By implementation of a set of sensors and real-time data analysis plant operators are being provided with necessary information that enables this way to exercise real-time decisions for the sake of the increase of the plant performance. Minimizing energy consumption, increasing the product yield, and less damaging to the environment is a potential focus for the research. Through the application of mathematical models, optimization algorithms, and simulation-based approaches, one can compare the different methods of each process and the produced product yields.
Sustainable Development of Underground Coal Resources in Shallow Groundwater Areas for Environment and Socio-Economic Considerations: A Case Study of Zhangji Coal Mine in China

Abstract:Coal resources in China are developed in several regions with shallow groundwater, and large mining-related surface subsidence can have negative impacts on agriculture, land and water resources as well as existing and future socio-economic resources. All these are important for sustainable resource development. Dynamic subsidence reclamation (DSR) planning concepts are evaluated here for another case study with analyses over a 11-year period. In DSR topsoil, subsoil, farming, and water resources management are dynamically synergized concurrent with mining ahead of and behind the projected dynamic subsidence trough. The study area involved mining five longwall faces (and post-mining reclamation) to assess if DSR could have improved both the environment and socio-economic conditions for post-mining land use as compared to using traditional reclamation (TR) and TR-modified (TR(MOD)) approaches. The results show that: (1) Upon final reclamation, farmland area and water resources in DSR and TR (MOD) will have increased by 5.6% and 30.2% as compared to TR. Removing soils ahead of mining before they submerge into water is important for farmland reclamation and long-term economic development. (2) Due to topsoil and subsoil separation and storage in the DSR plan, reclaimed farmland productivity should recover quickly and agriculture production should be larger than TR and TR(MOD) plans. (3) For a simplified economic model, the total revenue in the DSR plan should be 2.8 times more than in TR and 1.2 times larger than in TR (MOD) plan. (4) The total net revenue of the TR(MOD) plan should be increased by 8.1% as compared with the TR plan. The benefits will be much greater for analyses over longer periods. Overall, the DSR plan will allow for an improved socio-economic environment for new businesses to support disrupted workforces during and after mining.

Abstract:Regional Integrated Energy System (RIES) has been widely studied and applied in recent years for its excellent economy, flexible scheduling, energy conservation and environmental protection. Combined with the characteristics of mine associated energy utilization and occurrence, based on the research framework of RIES and taking the electric-gas-thermal coupling Mine Integrated Energy System(MIES) as the object, a collaborative optimization method of mine integrated energy system planning and operation considering economy and environment is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the topology architecture of mine comprehensive energy system is given considering the associated energy sources such as lack of wind and water gusher. Then, a two-layer planning-operation collaborative optimization model is proposed, with the upper layer being the optimal capacity optimization allocation layer and the lower layer being the optimal operation layer. An improved particle swarm optimization algorithm based on natural selection is proposed to solve the model efficiently. Finally, a mining area in Shanxi, China is selected for example analysis. The simulation results show that the proposed collaborative optimization scheme can effectively improve the economic and environmental benefits of the system, and verify the effectiveness and superiority of the optimization scheme.

Abstract:Large-scale diversion of Indian coking coal to the non-metallurgical sector has been pointed out by the authors and others on various forums. One of the principal reasons, indeed, is the lack of coal preparation facilities to treat the entire quantity of raw coking coal to make it suitable for coke making. However, the poor capacity utilization of the existing facilities and poor organic efficiency are the issues that, if addressed properly, can change the whole coal-washing scenario in India. Having carried out systematic studies on the performance of some of the coking coal washeries in Jharia coal field, authors are of the opinion that the problem cannot be solved entirely by focusing only on technical aspects. Meticulous resource planning, staffing, and change in management strategy are as important as optimizing operational efficiencies. Hence, the authors have delved into all the aspects of a working coal preparation plant and identified several measures to improve its performance.

Abstract:As the crucial material basis for the development of human society, mineral resources (MRs) are facing a serious dilemma of shortage. Strengthening the intensive utilization of existing resources has great significance for ensuring the sustainable and stable supply of MRs and promoting the realization of ecological mining. This paper, taking the city of Yangquan, China as a case study, explores the intensive utilization of MRs based on its scientific connotation, and proposes dynamic improvement paths for strengthening the intensification of MRs utilization, thus filling a gap in this domain. The background conditions of mines and the basic cases of corresponding mining enterprises are all indicators presented by the resource itself in the process of transforming minerals into useful products that constitute a basic framework for identifying and strengthening the intensification of MRs utilization. The results show that mining enterprises are the core of intensive utilization. The extract recovery rate of mining enterprises contributes the most to the intensive utilization of resources. Meanwhile, the input-output level and per capita output level of mining enterprises and the ore loss during mining process are also highly concerned targeting the intensification. The intensive utilization level of large mines is usually relatively high, indicating that mine scale does have an impact on the intensive utilization of resources, but when it reaches a certain scale, the impact will gradually decrease. Besides, there are still weak links in the development process of mines, regardless of the intensive degree. Thus, from the perspective of enterprise governance, corresponding dynamic improvement paths (fundamental optimization-comprehensive optimization-strategic optimization) are adopted to make an attempt at increasing the intensive degree of MRs utilization. The main contribution of this paper is to provide a new course of the realizability to strengthen the intensification of MRs utilization.

Abstract:Based on the land use data in 1986, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2009, 2015 and 2020 in the Pingshuo opencast coal mine area, the land use information entropy and dynamic degree were calculated, and the land use transfer matrix and complex network were constructed. The evolution characteristics of land usage were analyzed from several perspectives. Under the future economic-ecological dual scenario, an improved genetic algorithm was proposed to optimize the land use structure of the mining region, while the Markov model was used for comparative validation. The research results showed that cultivated land, forest land and grassland decreased between 1986 and 2020, while residential land and mining land rose dramatically, with cultivated land serving as the primary source. The entropy value of land use increased and the dominance decreased. Moreover, the integrated changes in the land use became more intense in 1986–2020, with the most drastic change in residential land. The land use system's overall stability was low, but showed a slowly increasing trend. In addition, after the optimization of multi-objective genetic algorithm, the land use structure of the mining area can provide greater comprehensive benefits, especially the ecological benefit. This aided in the improvement of the mining area's delicate ecosystem. The research results reveal the evolutionary process of land use over the past 30 years in the Pingshuo opencast coal mine area and provide theoretical support for regional land use planning and sustainable development.

Abstract:Modern mining engineering has become a huge system project with the increased intensification and complexity of mining engineering, which interwinds, involving many factors. Ethical issues in the main body of mining engineering have become more and more prominent. What must complement ongoing discussions is a more professional and systematic analysis that engages with mining engineering on the socio-technical systems. In this paper, first, the connotation and basic principles of mining engineering ethics are put forward. Then, the ethical responsibilities that mining engineers may face are analyzed. It is suggested that the code of mining engineering ethics can, in practice, provide engineers with the necessary guidelines to avoid mine accidents caused by wrong decisions. In addition, a case base is introduced to train students to analyze engineering ethics in practical cases, and four typical case studies are discussed in detail. Then, the implementation paths of mining engineering ethics are studied, which are centered on the concept of safe, efficient, green, and low-carbon development. Finally, we suggest that improving the ethical norms of mining engineering, personnel training system, and moral supervision of mining projects will enable engineers to deal with the ethical issues of mining engineering more effectively, thereby improving the sustainability of mining engineering.

Abstract:Life cycle assessments (LCA) are useful to quantify the environmental costs of mining projects, however the application of LCA is often a retrospective environmental measurement of operating mines. This paper presents a novel methodology of carrying out a LCA to generate life cycle impact assessment data that can form an environmental block model of a deposit. These spatially explicit data can then be used as a constraint within long-term mine scheduling simulations. The results indicate that significant reductions in global warming impact can be achieved at a small economic cost. For example using an environmental constraint it was possible to achieve 91.9% of the global warming impact whilst achieving 95.9% of the net present value compared to the baseline. Different constraints and economic scenarios are explored and multi-criteria decision analysis is carried out. This approach enables environmental considerations to be included in strategic mine planning. This is important because mining will continue to form an important part of our society for the foreseeable future. Integrating environmental considerations into the earliest stages of mine planning can assist in driving environmentally responsible raw material extraction.

Abstract:Globally mining industry is going through a period of radical change to meet the challenge of society’s expectations. In India, there are two broad categories of mines: Open Cast and Underground. Underground coalmine is considered one of the most hazardous working environments. The basic causes of accidents and injuries in mines are unsafe conditions, unsafe acts, or both. Disasters occur in mines as a result of large mine fires, powerful mine explosions, violent rock gas outbursts and water inundations. Fatality rates reveal that even though there are variations in the fatality rates per 1000 persons employed, the long-term trends show a steady improvement. However, it is found that accident rate in Indian coalmines in high as compared to other countries. All operating mines have to contend with the real danger of being overtaken by one or more disasters at some point of time during their lifespan. Plans for disaster management are, therefore, drawn by the mine managements. Due to the large number of high-risk industrial activities, Dhanbad coalfield is highly disaster prone. Underground fires have been occurring even in the residential areas. Considering the above, the city authorities propose to develop Disaster Management Plan. The need for strengthening disaster mitigation efforts at national level has been felt.

Abstract:Abstract After studying a large number of mining and excavation sites, the author of this article sampled and analysed the geological structure of the collection area. By comparing the soil geological structure, the degree of environmental damage caused by the excavation process was studied, and a variety of open-pit mine geological structures were analysed and studied. After analysing the relevant data, a modern open-pit mine geological structure of the mining operation area environment optimization system was established. This system can integrate the existing resources of the mine based on the analysis and restoration of ecological vegetation and enter the corresponding parameters., Can design a 3D landscape planning mottled corridor matrix spatial pattern model, combined with the current situation of abandoned land in mining and can be combined with corresponding landscape design strategies (such as artistic aesthetics), the system has the design points of modern engineering technology, in the beautification of the environment Utilizing the existing geological conditions to optimize the environment of the mining operation area has an important auxiliary role.
