Abstract:Biochar loaded with metal ions has been widely used to activate persulfate to degrade organic pollutants. However, the preparation conditions of catalysts are always controversial. In this study, the co‐heating conditions of soybean straw with high carbon and low nitrogen and nano‐iron oxide were systematically discussed by response surface method, and an efficient catalyst (Fe@BC) was obtained. Fe@BC can effectively activate sodium persulfate (PS) and degrade three synthetic azo dyes (Methyl orange (MO), Amino black 10B (AB10B), and Orange II) and rhodamine B (RhB). Under the optimum conditions, the removal rate of total organic carbon of these four dyes reached 41.1%–89.8% and the final degradation rate could reach 100%. The physicochemical properties of Fe@BC were studied by SEM, BET, XRD, XPS and TGA. The results revealed that the specific surface area of Fe@BC was 195.6m2/g. Further, reducing iron oxide by C generated C0.09Fe1.91 and zero‐valent iron. Free radical scavenging experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements showed that the main reactive oxide species (ROS) in the Fe@BC/PS system were hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and singlet oxygen (1O2). Finally, Several Fe@BC modification systems were explored, the optimum pH of Fe@BC/PS system was analyzed, and the effects of Fe@BC and PS dosage on degradation performance were also studied. This study provides a scientific basis for the production of efficient catalysts and biochar energy, and an effective treatment scheme for printing and dyeing wastewater.

Abstract:This research introduces an innovative approach to environmental cleanup by leveraging TiO2‐coated Borassus flabellifer male inflorescence biochar for enhanced photodegradation of Congo Red dye. Using RSM optimization, key parameters were fine‐tuned to achieve maximum efficiency. The biochar's high surface area boosts TiO2's photocatalytic performance, making this eco‐friendly composite a promising solution for sustainable wastewater treatment. This study explores the use of biochar, derived from Borassus flabellifer male inflorescence biomass as an alternative support for titanium dioxide (TiO2) to enhance its photocatalytic activity in degrading Congo red (CR) dye pollutant. The biochar was synthesized through controlled pyrolysis and subsequently combined with TiO2 to form a nanocomposite via hydrothermal method. The primary goal of creating this nanocomposite is to breakdown azo dyes, such as CR, using UV irradiation. Comprehensive characterization techniques, including XRD, FTIR, SEM coupled with EDAX, XPS, and UV‐DRS confirmed the successful integration of biochar with TiO2. The enhanced photocatalyst performance is attributed to the increased surface area, improved light absorption, and efficient charge separation facilitated by the biochar support. Furthermore, the experimental parameters were optimized using the response surface methodology (RSM). These studies demonstrated that the CR concentration, contact duration, pH, and photocatalyst quantity are critical factors in the photocatalytic oxidation process. The strong correlation coefficient for the first order model indicated that the data described by the RSM, agreed with the obtained results. This study highlights the potential of agricultural waste‐derived biochar as a cost‐effective and sustainable support for TiO2, offering a viable solution for the remediation of dye‐contaminated water.

Accelerated organics degradation by peroxymonosulfate activated with biochar co-doped with nitrogen and sulfur

Abstract:Engineered biochar is increasingly regarded as a cost-effective and eco-friendly peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator. Herein, biochar doped with nitrogen and sulfur moieties was prepared by pyrolysis of wood shavings and doping precursor. The doping precursor consists of either urea, thiourea or 1:1 w/w mixture of urea and thiourea (denoted as NSB-U, NSB-T and NSB-UT, respectively). The physicochemical properties of the NSBs were extensively characterized, revealing that they are of noncrystalline carbon with porous structure. The NSBs were employed as PMS activator to degrade organic pollutants particularly methylene blue (MB). It was found that NSB-UT exhibited higher MB removal rate with kapp = 0.202 min−1 due to its relatively high surface area and favorable intrinsic surface moieties (combination of graphitic N and thiophenic S). The effects of catalyst loading, PMS dosage and initial pH were evaluated. Positive enhancement of the MB removal rate can be obtained by carefully increasing the catalyst loading or PMS dosage. Meanwhile, the MB removal rate is greatly influenced by pH due to electrostatic interactions and pH dependent reactions. The NSB-UT can be reused for several cycles to some extent and its catalytic activity can be restored by thermal treatment. Based on the radical scavenger study and XPS analysis, the nonradical pathway facilitated by the graphitic N and thiophenic S active sites are revealed to be the dominant reaction pathway. Overall, the results of this study show that engineered biochar derived from locally available biowaste can be transformed into PMS activator for environmental applications.

Abstract:In this study, amorphous Co3O4 nanoparticles-decorated biochar was synthesized and employed to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for sulfamethazine (SMT) degradation in aqueous solution. Hydrochar of corn straw obtained from hydrothermal carbonization was impregnated in CoCl2 solution for anchoring cobalt nanoparticles onto biochar surface before pyrolysis. Application conditions of as-prepared cobalt-loaded biochar (Co-BC) involving dosage, pyrolysis temperature, cobalt loading, solution pH and groundwater components were examined; and the stability of the catalyst was investigated by examining its performance in recycling experiments (3 rounds) and the variation of catalytic mechanism in recycling experiment was investigated. 100% SMT was removed under the optimum condition within 60 min: 1.0 mmol/L CoCl2 aqueous solution, 800°C of pyrolysis temperature, 400 mg/L Co-BC, 0.06 mM PMS, solution pH 8. The results turned out that the amorphous Co3O4 nanoparticles were favorable for the activation of PMS. BC not only played as a support for dispersion of Co3O4 nanoparticles but also acted as an electron shuttle between Co3O4 and PMS/SMT molecules. During the recycling use, the key free radicals changed from ▪OH and SO4▪- to SO4▪- and only low degree of cobalt ions leaching was monitored. Additionally, the mixed groundwater components exerted trivial influence on the reaction system.

Abstract:Functional biochar designed with heteroatom doping facilitates the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), triggering both radical and non-radical systems and thus augmenting pollutant degradation efficiency. A sequence of functional biochar, derived from hyperaccumulator (Sedum alfredii) residues, was synthesized via sequential doping with boron and nitrogen. The SABC-B@N-2 exhibited outstanding catalytic effectiveness in activating PMS to degrade the model pollutant, acid orange 7 ( =0.0655 min-1), which was 6.75 times more active than the pristine biochar and achieved notable mineralization efficiency (71.98%) at reduced PMS concentration (0.1 mM). Relative contribution evaluations, using steady-state concentrations combined with electrochemical and in situ Raman analyses, reveal that co-doping with boron and nitrogen alters the reaction pathway, transitioning from PMS activation through multiple reactive oxygen species (ROSs) to a predominantly non-radical process facilitated by electron transfer. Moreover, the previously misunderstood concept that singlet oxygen (1O2) plays a central role in the degradation of AO7 has been clarified. Correlation analysis and density functional theory calculations indicate that the distinct BCN configuration, featuring the BC2O group and pyridinic-N, is fundamental to the active site. This research substantially advances the sustainability of phytoremediation by offering a viable methodology to synthesize highly catalytic functional biochar utilizing hyperaccumulator residues.
Engineered digestate-derived biochar mediated peroxymonosulfate activation for oxytetracycline removal in sustainable wastewater remediation

Abstract:Nowadays, biochar is extensively used in wastewater remediation with the aim of achieving water security and circularity with minimal impacts on ecosystems and the environment. In this study, digestate biochar was prepared and modified using different methods and then employed as a peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator to oxidize oxytetracycline, a model antibiotic pollutant in wastewater. The optimal biochar catalyst was characterized, spin trapping tests were carried out to confirm the dominant catalytic mechanism, and in silico toxicity prediction was conducted based on structure-activity relationships. Assessment of the catalytic performance of the pristine and engineered biochar showed that nitrogen doping increased oxytetracycline degradation efficiency by 1.92-fold (i.e., 100% oxytetracycline degradation with the engineered biochar compared to 52% with pristine biochar), while pyrrolic nitrogen was identified as a major PMS activation site. It was discovered that several parameters, such as catalyst dose, pH, PMS concentration, and competing ions, affected oxytetracycline degradation efficiencies. Additionally, the toxicity of the degradation intermediate was studied. Scavenger trapping tests showed that 1O2 and SO4•- were the most prevalent species during oxytetracycline degradation in the system, with four possible degradation pathways proposed, including secondary alcohol oxidation, hydroxylation, dehydration, and deamidation. Overall, it is anticipated that this study would contribute to our understanding of metal-free biochar activation of PMS as an attractive treatment scheme for antibiotic-polluted water.
Nitrogen-doped biochar fiber with graphitization from Boehmeria nivea for promoted peroxymonosulfate activation and non-radical degradation pathways with enhancing electron transfer

Abstract:Advanced oxidation has great promise in the degradation of organic pollutants, but the high preparation requirements, adjustment difficulty, high cost, potential hazard, and low repeatability of catalysts limit the practical applications of this technology. In this study, a metal-free biochar-based catalyst derived from biomass fiber was prepared assisted by graphitization and nitrogen incorporation (PGBF-N). The heterogeneous catalysis of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was triggered by PGBF-N with degradation rate 7 times higher than that of pristine biochar. The high catalytic efficiency was attributed to the accelerated electron transfer originated from the high degree of graphitization and nitrogen functionalization of PGBF-N, in which the non-radical pathways containing carbon-bridge and singlet oxygen-mediated oxidation were elucidated as the predominant pathways for tetracycline degradation, instead of the dominant role of radical pathway in pristine biochar. Vacancies and defective edges formed on sp2-hybridized carbon framework as well as the nitrogen doping sites and ketonic group of PGNF-N were considered as possible active sites. The excellent degradation rate in actual water indicated that the PGBF-N/PMS system dominated by non-radical pathway exhibited a high anti-interference ability to surrounding organic or inorganic compounds. This study provides a facile protocol for converting biomass fiber into functional catalyst and enables underlying insight in mediating dominated degradation mechanism of heterogeneous catalysis by biochar fiber.

Abstract:The exponential growth of industrial activities has led to a significant rise in the release of organic effluents, containing hazardous heavy metals and dyes, into the environment. These pollutants exhibit resistance to conventional biodegradation processes and are associated with carcinogenic properties, posing a severe threat to living organisms. In this context, the present research endeavours to address this environmental challenge through the development of an affordable and efficient photocatalyst, the Co 3 O 4 /reduced graphene oxide/biochar (CBG-10) heterostructure. The structural analysis of CBG-10, conducted through various techniques such as XRD, XPS, SEM, and optical property measurements, demonstrates its potential as a highly effective and easily recoverable catalyst for the mineralization of persistent pollutants like methylene blue, malachite green, and hexavalent Cr( VI ). The recyclability of CBG-10 was confirmed through XRD studies, highlighting its stability and practical usability in wastewater purification. The photocatalytic behaviour of the catalyst was attributed to the generation of hydroxyl ( ̇OH) and superoxide radicals ( ̇O 2 − ) during visible light illumination, as revealed by quenching experiments. The cost-effectiveness and stability of CBG-10 position it as a promising solution for addressing the challenges associated with the removal of stubborn organic contaminants from wastewater, thereby contributing to environmental protection and public health.

Abstract:Biochar works as the catalyst for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to produce highly oxidizing radicals to remove organic contaminants from wastewater, but its activity requires further improvement. Recent research demonstrates that the PMS activation performance of biochar is closely related to the oxygen-containing functional groups (OFGs). Therefore, biochar/montmorillonite (BC/Mt) composites are designed for activating PMS toward degrading tetracycline. The negative charge of Mt. induced the electron transfer form Mt. to BC, which increases the nucleophilicity of C O groups that promote the activation of PMS to • OH and SO 4 •− radicals. Meanwhile, the pyrolysis path of rice straw is tuned by Mt., and the amount of COO groups is increased from 8.99% to 9.79% that promotes the generation of 1 O 2 . Moreover, electron paramagnetic resonance and quenching experiments reveal that the activation mechanism of PMS by the BC/Mt. is comprised of both the radical and the non-radical pathway. Consequently, the tetracycline degradation kinetics using the optimized BC/Mt. (0.117 min −1 ) is higher than either bare BC (0.0866 min −1 ) or bare Mt. (0.0258 min −1 ), highlighting the significance of the rational design of electrocatalysts toward the enhanced catalytic chemistry. This work provides a facile route to improve the catalytic performance of biochar by hybridizing with clay minerals and is of great significance to promote the practical application of PMS-based advanced oxidation processes.

Abstract:The substantial development of the dyeing and printing industry has resulted in an increased discharge of dye wastewater containing a large amount of recalcitrant organic pollutants. Furthermore, the landfill disposal of red mud has led to significant environmental pollution such as soil erosion and groundwater contamination. Therefore, this study aimed to promote the resource utilization of red mud by preparing advanced oxidation catalyst, resulting in effective treatment of dye wastewater, and the primary reaction mechanism was revealed. In this study, biochar-loading red mud (RBC) was applied to activate persulfate (PDS) for the degradation of acid orange 7 (AO7) with the initial concentration of 50 mg L −1 . The maximum removal rate of 2.45 mg L·min −1 was achieved in 20 min and corresponding with the removal ratio of 98.0% under the PDS concentration of 20 mM (4.76 g L −1 ). Eventually, the removal ratio of 99.2% was attained within 60 min. The high catalytic efficiency was probably ascribed to the singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) dominant non-radical pathway and RBC-mediated electron transfer mechanism. It was found that Fe(II), specific surface areas and functional groups on the catalyst were highly related to its catalytic efficiency and passivation . RBC had better reusability due to the loading of biochar and the reduction of zero-valent iron. The non-radical pathway mechanism and electron transfer mechanism were proposed for the activation of PDS, and non-radical pathway played a dominant role. Besides, the degradation pathways and toxicity assessment were analyzed. This research proposed a new electron transfer mechanism for activation process of PDS , which can provide a theoretical support for further studies. Overall, this study demonstrated that catalysts synthesized from red mud and biomass exhibit highly efficient activation in degrading the model pollutant AO7 through PDS activation. The catalyst displayed promising reusability and practical applicability, offering potential advancements in both the resource utilization and reduction of red mud.

The perfect state of Trichophyton violaceum.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Trichophyton violaceum is the most common etiologic agent causing dermatophytosis in Egypt. This report deals with attempts to produce the perfect state of T. violaceum that may play a role in the epidemiology of T. violaceum. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ten strains of T. violaceum were inoculated on hair soil culture and on rice agar media. RESULTS Cultures on hair soil media failed to produce the ascogenous form of the fungus, but after 6 weeks of culture on rice agar media, fertile cleistothecium were seen and 2 weeks later separate asci appeared. CONCLUSION This is the first report on the production of the perfect (sexual) state of T. violaceum. Details of the ascogenous form of this dermatophyte should be studied in the future.
Highly efficient peroxymonosulfate activation by cobalt nanoparticles encapsulated in alginate-derived carbon for methylene blue degradation

Abstract:Sodium alginate, a bio-friendly and abundant precursor of biochar (BC), was employed to prepare biochar@Co catalysts (BC@Co). A series of catalysts was synthesised at different temperatures via a one-step carbothermal method with the aim of activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade methylene blue (MB). For the BC@Co- T ( T = 500–900 °C) catalysts, the degradation process of MB by PMS was consistent with the first-order reaction kinetics model, with reaction rate constants of 0.0471–0.8041 min −1 . In particular, the composite prepared at 900 °C (BC@Co-9) delivered the best PMS activation performance. Using the BC@Co-9–PMS system, the effects of various factors, including the catalyst dosage, PMS concentration, and coexisting ions, on the MB degradation rate were investigated. Under the optimal conditions of 0.005 g L −1 BC@Co-9 and 0.6 mmol L −1 PMS, the degradation rate of MB reached 100% in 18 min. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements showed that 1 O 2 and ̇O 2 − were predominantly responsible for the degradation of MB in the BC@Co-9–PMS system. This study explored the application of sodium alginate as a recycled material and provides a feasible strategy for designing and fabricating environmentally friendly and efficient catalysts for the activation of PMS to degrade organic dyestuffs.

Abstract:In this study, the bimetallic and nitrogen co-doped biochar was prepared for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to degrade emerging contaminants. Compared to single metal-doped biochar, bimetallic-doped biochar showed much higher catalytic activity. Iron and cobalt co-doped biochar (FeCo-BC) exhibited higher catalytic activity than iron and copper co-doped biochar (FeCu-BC). When FeCo-BC was used for PMS activation, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) could be completely removed within 10 min, with the degradation rate of 0.749 min-1, which was 2.3 and 69.4 times higher than that of Fe-BC (0.333 min-1) and Co-BC (0.0108 min-1), respectively, demonstraing the synergistic effect of bimetallic co-doping. Meanwhile, the SMX mineralization efficiency reached 57.1 %. In the system of FeCo-BC/PMS, multi reactive species produced, in which hydroxyl radicals, sulfate radicals and high-valent metal-oxo mainly contributed to SMX degradation. The superior catalytic activity of FeCo-BC was attributed to the configuration of FeNx-CoNx. In five consecutive experiments, FeCo-BC showed good catalytic activity and stability. This study provides a way to the rational design of high efficient and stable PMS catalyst, which could be used in Fenton-like reaction to remove the emerging organic contaminants.

Abstract:Anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS) is a potential resource for biochar production due to its unique microstructure and high organic contents. In this study, Fe 3 O 4 -loaded biochar derived from AnGS as a catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation was synthesized through iron modification and pyrolysis at different temperatures. The biochar characterization indicated that surface area (249.145 m 2 g −1 ) and microporosity (131.819 m 2 g −1 ) were significantly enhanced at 800 °C. Furthermore, the excellent magnetic properties of the iron-modified biochar at 800 °C (S@Fe-800) (45.28 emu g −1 ) were confirmed, in which Fe 3 O 4 was identified as the dominant reactive species. S@Fe-800 exhibited remarkable PMS activation ability for organic pollutants, which displayed superior Rhodamine B (RhB) removal efficiency. Results from the quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) detections demonstrated that the reactive oxidizing species (ROS), including sulfate radical (SO 4 •− ), were generated in the S@Fe-800/PMS system. Meanwhile, the significant intermediates and possible degradation path of PMS decomposition over RhB were proposed. It is believed that this work provides an effective method for organic contaminants removal and a green utilization route for AnGS.

Abstract:Advanced oxidation technology based on persulfate can efficiently remove trace pollutants in water, but there are problems with poor electronic cycling efficiency and metal leaching. In this work, we successfully fabricated in-situ nitrogen doped biochar composite material Fe 3 C/C by chelating Fe 2+ ions with chitosan and carbonizing the precursor. The main active component of Fe 3 C/C was Fe 3 C, and nitrogen doping and biochar structure promoted the cycling of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ . The catalyst Fe 3 C/C exhibits excellent synergistic "adsorption-oxidation" ability, and the removal efficiency of sulfonamide (SA) can reach 80 % (k = 0.1793 min −1 ). The degradation kinetics, free radical chemistry, and characterization were combined to investigate the synergistic effect of Fe 3 C and carbon substrate on the generation of persistent free radicals. Fe 3 C/C is not only an electron donor, but also an electron acceptor and electron transfer carrier. In the Fe 3 C/C/PMS system, free radical and non-free radical pathways coexist, which makes it suitable for the treatment of various pollutants in complex water matrices. The contribution of defects and pyrrole nitrogen constitutes the synergistic degradation process of free and non-free radicals. In addition, Fe 3 C/C-3 showed good continuous processing ability and less iron dissolution in the packed column experiment. This work provides theoretical support and technical means for the efficient removal of trace pollutants in water by biochar-based advanced oxidation technology.

Abstract:The disposal and management of waste sludge is a considerable challenge for environmental protection and resource utilization. Herein, sludge-based biochar material loaded with nano-Fe3O4 () was fabricated via hydrothermal carbonization process and employed as catalyst to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for degrading organic dyes in wastewater. Benefiting from the proper iron content, porous structure and the good dispersibility of iron on the catalyst surface, the proposed catalyst not only exhibited excellent catalytic activity and durability in the activation of PMS to degrade Rhodamine B (RhB), which was almost completely removed in 10 min (50 mL 50 mg L−1), but also performed broad application prospects in pollutant degradation. More importantly, the free radical quenching test and electron spin-resonance spectroscopy (ESR) detection demonstrated that O2•-, SO4•-, OH and 1O2 were generated during the process of catalyst activation of PMS. Based on this, a possible reaction pathway for degrading RhB with the aid of was put forward. It is believed that this work offers a promising reuse method of converting the waste sludge to a high efficiency and low-cost nano magnetic catalyst to activate PMS for degrading refractory organic pollutants in aquatic surroundings.

Abstract:Metal-biochar composites with varying Fe/Mn ratios were synthesized for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) oxidative degradation of azo dye Orange G (OG) were investigated. The 1Fe2Mn-BC composite based on 1:2 molar ratio impregnation of Fe/Mn salt concentrations of efficient sugarcane harvest residue showed the best catalytic performance under aqueous pH 3–10 and had the least impacts from coexistence of inorganic anions and humic acids. The OG degradation by 1Fe2Mn-BC/PMS system optimized at catalyst:oxidant:pollutant ratio of 1:1.25:0.5 on g/L basis was found to follow pseudo-first-order kinetic and achieved 100 % degradation efficiency within 30 min. Apparent activation energy for OG degradation by 1Fe2Mn-BC/PMS was 16.91 kJ mol −1 , and increasing reaction temperature from 293 to 313 K enhanced degradation rate constant by 49 %. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and radical quenching experiments revealed dominant non-radical 1 O 2 and radical O 2 − pathways in the OG oxidation removal by the 1Fe2Mn-BC/PMS system, although SO 4 − and OH radicals also participated. XPS spectra of 1Fe2Mn-BC before and after OG degradation indicated dominant surface composition of Fe(III) and Mn(II) valence states over other FeMn-biochar composites. The novel optimized one-step pyrolysis Fe/Mn bimetal biochar composite provides an efficient PMS activation for advanced oxidation process (AOP) treating of azo dyes in wastewater decontamination.

Abstract:Advanced oxidation processes based on carbon catalysis is a promising strategy possessing great potential for environmental pollution degradation. Herein, nitrogen-doped biochar nanosheets (NCS-x) were synthesized using a nitrogen-rich biomass (Candida utilis) as sole precursor. The involvement of environmental-friendly molten salt (NaCl and KCl) in pyrolysis process not only facilitated the exfoliation of biochar, but also favored the retention of N element in biochar. When applying as catalyst for peroxymonosulfate activation, the as-obtained NCS-6 exhibited outstanding performance in catalytic degradation of bisphenol A (BPA). A 100% removal efficiency was observed in 6 min with fast reaction kinetic (k = 1.36 min(-1)). Based on quenching test and in-situ electron paramagnetic resonance analysis, both radical pathway and non-radical pathway were suggested to be involved in BPA degradation, while singlet oxygen was identified as the dominant reactive oxygen species. Furthermore, the ecotoxicity evaluation using Chlorella vulgaris as ecological indicator indicated that BPA solution after degradation was less toxic than the original solution. It is expected that this green and facile strategy holds great promise for value-added conversion of nitrogen-rich biomass to highly efficient biochar nanosheets for environment remediation.
