Abstract:BACKGROUND:Humans are simultaneously exposed to numerous of environmental brominated flame retardants (BFRs). We aim to explore the overall associations of BFRs mixture on metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components and further identify significant chemicals.METHODS:This study included 4641 adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in 2007-2016. The weighted logistic regression was conducted to estimate the association of a single BFR exposure with MetS and its components. Meanwhile, the weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were adopted to evaluate the overall associations of BFRs mixture on MetS and its components, and to identify significant chemicals. We also evaluated potential associations modified by sex.RESULTS:In the weighted logistic regression model, PBB153 were positively associated with MetS in a dose-dependent manner (Ptrend < 0.05). For its components, increasing quartiles of most BFRs were positively associated with abdominal obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, and low HDL. However, we found no statistically significant associations between BFRs and hypertension and hyperglycemia. WQS analyses found that BFRs mixture was positively associated with MetS (OR: 1.30; 95%CI:1.14, 1.46), abdominal obesity (OR: 1.15; 95%CI:1.03, 1.27), hypertriglyceridemia (OR:1.43; 95%CI:1.19, 1.67), and low HDL (OR: 1.15; 95%CI:1.01, 1.29). BKMR showed associations in a similar direction as WQS for BFRs mixture. For MetS, hypertriglyceridemia and Low HDL, PBB153, PBDE28 and PBDE209 were the most heavily weighting chemicals and had the highest the posterior inclusion probabilities in the WQS and BKMR, respectively. BFRs showed stronger associations of MetS and its components in males than in females.CONCLUSIONS:The present study suggested exposure to BFRs mixture was positively associated with MetS and its components in adults, and PBB153, PBDE28 and PBDE209 were the significant chemicals. However, prospective cohort studies are still needed to confirm the causal effect between BFRs mixture and MetS.
Associations between exposure to brominated flame retardants and periodontitis in U.S. adults

Abstract:Background: Increasing evidence has shown that environmental factors play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of periodontitis. Humans are simultaneously exposed to a variety of environmental brominated flame retardants (BFRs). However, the relationship between BFRs in periodontitis remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the overall association between BFRs and periodontitis in a nationally representative US population and to further identify important chemicals. Methods: Data from 3322 NHANES participants from 2009 to 2016 were used. Serum BFRs were registered, including PBDE-28, PBDE-47, PBDE-85, PBDE-99, PBDE100, PBDE-153, PBDE-154, PBDE-183, PBDE-209 and PBB-153. Survey weighted generalized logistic regression models, restricted cubic splines (RCS) were conducted to assess single BFRs exposure with periodontitis. Meanwhile, weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were used to evaluate the overall association of BFRs mixtures with periodontitis and to identify significant chemicals. Results: A total of 3322 participants were included in the study, of whom 1795 had periodontitis. After adjusting for potential confounders, multiple logistic regression analysis revealed significant positive associations between serum levels of PBDE-28, PBDE-47, PBDE-85, PBDE-99, PBDE-100, PBDE-154, PBDE-183, and PBB-153 and the risk of periodontitis (all P < 0.05). A dose-response relationship was observed for many of these BFRs, with higher quantiles associated with an increased risk of periodontitis. WQS regression identified PBDE-183 (38.60%), PBDE-153 (21.20%), PBDE-209 (14.40%), and PBDE-99 (11.90%) as the BFRs with the largest weights contributing to the overall mixture effect on periodontitis risk. BKMR analysis further supported the positive association between serum BFRs and periodontitis, with most individual BFRs showing a positive trend, except for PBDE-153. Restricted cubic spline analysis revealed a generally increasing probability of periodontitis with increasing concentrations of BFRs, albeit with some nonlinear patterns for certain compounds. Conclusion: In conclusion, this study provides compelling evidence of a significant association between exposure to brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and an increased risk of periodontitis in a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults. Elevated serum levels of several BFRs, including PBDE-28, PBDE-47, PBDE-85, PBDE-99, PBDE-100, PBDE-154, PBDE-183, and PBB-153, were found to be positively associated with periodontitis, exhibiting a dose-response relationship.
The Association Between Brominated Flame Retardants Exposure and Liver-Related Biomarkers in US Adults

Abstract:Background: Emerging studies demonstrate that exposure to brominated flame retardants (BFRs) can have harmful effects on human health. Our study focused on the relationship between exposure to various BFRs and markers of liver function. Methods: To further explore the association between BFR exposure and liver function impairment, we used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) for three cycles from 2009 to 2014, leaving 4206 participants (≥20 years of age) after screening. Nine BFRs and eight liver function tests (LFTs) were measured in the participants' serum to represent BFRs and liver function impairment in vivo. To investigate whether there is a relationship between BFRs and health outcome, statistical research methods such as the weighted linear regression model, restricted cubic spline (RCS), weighted quantile sum (WQS), quantile-based g computing (QGC), and the Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR) were used to evaluate the correlation between serum BFRs and LFTs. Results: The studies reveals that exposure to BFRs is associated with liver function biomarkers. In a weighted linear regression model, we found that PBB153, PBDE99, PBDE154, PBDE209, PBDE85 exposure was positively correlated with AST, ALT, GGT, ALP, TP, and SL risk. In RCS model, the nonlinear relationships between PBB153 and AST, ALT, and GGT and PBDE209 and ALT and TP are the most significant. The exposure to combined BFRs was positively correlated with AST, ALT, and GGT in WQS and QGC models. BKMR analysis showed that BFR exposure was positively correlated with AST, ALT, ALP, and GGT. Conclusions: Exposure to BFRs is associated with liver function impairment, suggesting that BFR exposure is potentially toxic to the human liver, but more in-depth studies are needed to explore this correlation.

Abstract:Background: Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are widely utilized to mitigate the flammability of various materials. Previous studies have revealed the impact of BFRs exposure on hormonal disruption and bone metabolism which are closely related to periodontitis. However, it remains unknown the potential relationship between BFRs and periodontitis. This study aimed to explore the association between BFRs exposure and periodontitis in US adults. Methods: The data analyzed in this study were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009-2014. Twelve serum BFRs were quantified using isotope dilution gas chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression was employed to evaluate the association between serum BFRs and periodontitis. Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) analyses were utilized to assess the association between mixtures of BFRs and periodontitis. Results: A total of 3311 eligible participants were included. Serum BFRs (PBDE-47, PBDE-99, and PBDE-154) were significantly associated with periodontitis, and the odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals(CIs) were 1.15(1.01,1.29), 1.10(1.01,1.20), and 1.12(1.01,1.25), respectively. Notably, these three BFRs were also significantly associated with the severity of periodontitis. Additionally, the BKMR model revealed a significant association between the mixture of all twelve BFRs and periodontitis. Conclusions: This preliminary study suggests a significant association between specific serum BFRs (PBDE-47, PBDE-99, and PBDE-154) and periodontitis and its severity. Further prospective and experimental studies are warranted to validate our findings.

Abstract:Brominated flame retardants (BFRs), commonly found in consumer products, have been identified as potential hazards to liver function. While the individual effects of specific BFRs are somewhat understood, there is limited evidence on how mixtures of these chemicals, especially when influenced by demographic factors, interact to affect liver function. This study utilized data from 10,828 participants aged 12 and above from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005–2016) to investigate the associations between BFRs (both individually and in combinations) and biomarkers of liver injury. The study focused on how age, gender, and body mass index (BMI) modify modulate these effects. Multivariate linear regression, restricted cubic spline function, weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression, and quantile g-computation (qgcomp) models were used to analyze the linear, non-linear, and joint associations between BFR levels and liver function parameters. We found positive associations between the mixed BFRs index and AST, ALT, GGT, ALP, and TBIL levels and a negative association with ALB levels. PBDE28, PBDE47, and PBB153 consistently contributed to the top weight in both the WQS and qgcomp models. Most critically, the study demonstrated that the relationship between co-exposure to BFRs and liver function parameters was modified by age, gender, and BMI. Therefore, our study highlights the importance of considering demographic diversity in assessing the risk of BFR-induced liver damage and supports the implementation of tailored preventive and intervention strategies.

Abstract:The prevalence of diabetes is increasing, especially in the elderly population. Unfortunately, many seniors have limited access to ongoing health care, which may hinder improvements in these chronic disease states. Use of social media continues to increase among all populations. Thus, use of this venue to reach patients, including those with diabetes, is a reasonable undertaking. Countryside Diabetes is a Facebook page created and administered by Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy faculty and students to reach this growing and often underserved demographic. The aim is to provide ongoing education and support for people affected by diabetes. Information posted on the Web site began addressing usual diabetes-related topics such as nutrition, exercise, and selfcare. Each week the site focused on an individual topic, and specialists collaborated on these efforts, fortifying the site content through a multidisciplinary approach. Membership in the senior population continues to grow and garner participation.

Abstract:Background Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) exposure and cardiovascular disease are controversial. We aimed to assess the association between serum PFAS exposure and cardiovascular health (CVH) in U.S. adults. Methods We analyzed serum PFAS concentration data of U.S. adults reported in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) study (2005–2018). We employed two weighted logistic regression models and a restricted cubic spline (RCS) to examine the association between each PFAS and impaired CVH (defined as moderate and low CVH). Quantile g-computation (Qgcomp) and weighted quantile sum (WQS) analysis were used to estimate the effects of mixed exposures to PFASs on impaired CVH. Results PFAS were associated with an increased risk of impaired CVH (OR PFNA : 1.40, 95% CI: 1.09, 1.80; OR PFOA : 1.44, 95% CI: 1.10, 1.88; OR PFOS : 1.62, 95% CI: 1.25, 2.11). PFOA and PFOS exhibited nonlinear relationships with impaired CVH. Significant interactions were observed for impaired CVH between race/ethnicity and PFHxS ( p = 0.02), marital status and PFOA ( p = 0.03), and both marital status and race/ethnicity with PFOS ( p = 0.01 and p = 0.02, respectively). Analysis via WQS and Qgcomp revealed that the mixture of PFAS was positively associated with an increased risk of impaired CVH. Conclusion PFNA, PFOA, and PFOS exposure are associated with an increased risk of impaired CVH in U.S. adults. Race/ethnicity and marital status may influence CVH. Reducing PFAS exposure could alleviate the burden of disease associated with impaired CVH.

Abstract:Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are a group of chemicals widely used in various applications to prevent or slow down the spread of fire. However, they have adverse effects on human health. There is a relative scarcity of population-based studies regarding BFRs, particularly their impact on the respiratory system. This study aimed to investigate the influence of BFRs on pulmonary function using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The study found that elevated serum concentrations of certain BFRs were associated with pulmonary ventilatory dysfunction. Adjusted analyses revealed positive correlations between PBDE47, PBDE183, and PBDE209 concentrations and ventilatory dysfunction. The analysis of mixed BFRs showed a positive relationship with pulmonary ventilation dysfunction, with PBDE47 making the most significant contribution. Our study demonstrates that both individual and combined BFRs exposure can lead to impaired pulmonary ventilation function. These findings provide evidence of the adverse effects of BFRs on lung function, emphasizing the importance of further investigating the potential health consequences of these compounds. Further large-scale longitudinal studies are needed to investigate this relationship in the future.

Association between urinary environmental phenols and the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in US adults

Abstract:Environmental phenols, as endocrine disruptors, are used widely in personal care and consumer products. However, few studies have examined the association between phenol exposure, including bisphenol A (BPA), benzophenone-3 (BP-3), and triclosan, and the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). This cross-sectional study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2003-2012). Urinary BPA, BP-3, and triclosan were measured with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). The CVD was defined as a composite of 5 self-reported cardiovascular outcomes, including congestive heart failure, coronary heart disease, angina pectoris, heart attack or stroke. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to examine the association between phenols and the prevalence of CVD. A total of 8164 participants were enrolled, and 740 (9.1%) were diagnosed of CVD. The average levels of BPA, BP-3, and triclosan concentrations were 3.38, 202.63, and 99.27 ng/mL respectively. Per 1-unit increasement in log-transformed urinary BPA was associated with increased risk of CVD after adjusting all covariates (odds ratio [OR] 1.09, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.01 to 1.18, P < 0.05). Compared with the lowest quartile (< 0.9), the multivariable-adjusted OR was 1.30 (1.03 to 1.65, P < 0.05) in the highest quartile (> 3.8). Restricted spline models confirmed that the association between BPA and the risk of CVD was non-linear (P = 0.045). Only BPA was associated with the risk of CVD, following a J-curve shaped relationship.
Exposure to Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers and Risk of All-Cause and Cause-Specific Mortality

Abstract:ImportancePolybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are an important group of persistent organic pollutants with endocrine-disrupting properties. However, prospective cohort studies regarding the association of PBDE exposure with long-term health outcomes, particularly mortality, are lacking.ObjectiveTo examine the association of environmental exposure to PBDEs with risk of all-cause and cause-specific mortality.Design, Setting, and ParticipantsThis nationally representative cohort study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2003 to 2004 and linked mortality information through December 31, 2019. Adults aged 20 years or older with available data on PBDE measurements and mortality were included. Statistical analysis was performed from February 2022 to April 2023.ExposuresPBDE analytes in serum samples were measured using solid phase extraction and isotope dilution gas chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry.Main Outcomes and MeasuresAll-cause mortality, cancer mortality, and cardiovascular mortality.ResultsThis study included 1100 participants (mean [SE] age, 42.9 [0.6] years; proportion [SE] female, 51.8% [1.6%]; proportion [SE] Hispanic, 12.9% [2.7%]; proportion [SE] non-Hispanic Black, 10.5% [1.6%]; proportion [SE] non-Hispanic White, 70.8% [3.7%]; proportion [SE] other race and ethnicity, 5.8% [1.1%]). During 16 162 person-years of follow-up (median [IQR] follow-up, 15.8 [15.2-16.3] years; maximum follow-up, 17 years), 199 deaths occurred. Participants with higher serum PBDE levels were at higher risk for death. After adjustment for age, sex, and race and ethnicity, lifestyle and socioeconomic factors, and body mass index, participants with the highest tertile of serum PBDE levels had an approximately 300% increased risk of cancer mortality (HR, 4.09 [95% CI, 1.71-9.79]) compared with those with the lowest tertile of serum PBDE levels. No significant association of PBDE exposure with all-cause mortality (HR, 1.43 [95% CI, 0.98-2.07]) or cardiovascular mortality (HR, 0.92 [95% CI, 0.41-2.08]) was observed.Conclusions and RelevanceIn this nationally representative cohort study, PBDE exposure was significantly associated with an increased risk of cancer mortality. Further studies are needed to replicate the findings and determine the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract:Undernourishment and malnutrition as well as nutritionally conditioned diseases are still the greatest risk factor for every domestic animal born. In less developed regions, overgrazing and monoculture crops pose new nutrition problems. In developed countries, animal populations are faced with new feedstuffs resulting from new technologies, with risks stemming from contamination and with exposure to various new substances. In order to allow for an evaluation of the modern feeding scene, several examples are given. Since a positive correlation between animal well-being and long term economic success is likely to exist, optimism seems indicated concerning the impact of modern feeding measures on the animal.
Associations between specific volatile organic chemical exposures and cardiovascular disease risks: insights from NHANES

Abstract:Introduction: An increasing body of research has demonstrated a correlation between pollutants from the environment and the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). However, the impact of volatile organic chemicals (VOC) on CVD remains unknown and needs further investigation. Objectives: This study assessed whether exposure to VOC was associated with CVD in the general population. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted utilizing data from five survey cycles (2005-2006, 2011-2012, 2013-2014, 2015-2016, and 2017-2018) of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) program. We analyzed the association between urinary VOC metabolites (VOCs) and participants by multiple logistic regression models, further Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR) models and Weighted Quantile Sum (WQS) regression were performed for mixture exposure analysis. Results: Total VOCs were found to be positively linked with CVD in multivariable-adjusted models (p for trend = 0.025), independent of established CVD risk variables, such as hypertension, diabetes, drinking and smoking, and total cholesterol levels. Compared with the reference quartile of total VOCs levels, the multivariable-adjusted odds ratios in increasing quartiles were 1.01 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.78-1.31], 1.26 (95% CI: 1.05-1.21) and 1.75 (95% CI: 1.36-1.64) for total CVD. Similar positive associations were found when considering individual VOCs, including AAMA, CEMA, CYMA, 2HPMA, 3HPMA, IPM3 and MHBMA3 (acrolein, acrylamide, acrylonitrile, propylene oxide, isoprene, and 1,3-butadiene). In BKMR analysis, the overall effect of a mixture is significantly related to VOCs when all chemicals reach or exceed the 75th percentile. Moreover, in the WQS models, the most influential VOCs were found to be CEMA (40.30%), DHBMA (21.00%), and AMCC (19.70%). Conclusion: The results of our study indicated that VOC was all found to have a significant association with CVD when comparing results from different models. These findings hold significant potential for public health implications and offer valuable insights for future research directions.

Abstract:Bisphenol A (BPA), one of the most widely consumed endocrine disrupting chemicals, has been found to be associated with a variety of diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases. However, few studies have investigated the association of BPA with long-term health outcomes. This study analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2003–2016. The NHANES data were linked to mortality data (with a follow-up point of December 31, 2019). The urinary BPA concentration was estimated by adjusting for urinary creatinine (BPA/Cr, ng/mg). Complex sampling-weighted multivariate Cox proportional hazards models were used to compare the hazard ratios (HRs) of cardiovascular and all-cause mortality among participants with different urinary BPA concentrations. This study included 9243 adult participants. The median follow-up duration was 9.1 years. During this period, 1200 all-cause deaths occurred, of which 374 were cardiovascular deaths. Compared to the lowest BPA/Cr quartile group, the adjusted HRs of the highest BPA/Cr quartile group were 1.76 (95% CI, 1.23–2.52) for cardiovascular mortality and 1.21 (95% CI, 0.98–1.49) for all-cause mortality. In addition, there was a significant interaction between sex and BPA/Cr ( P for interaction = 0.044) for the risk of cardiovascular mortality. The adjusted HR for cardiovascular mortality in female participants was 2.80 (95% CI, 1.56–5.02), while that in male participants was only 1.34 (95% CI, 0.79–2.24). Higher urinary BPA is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular mortality among US adults. The effect of BPA on cardiovascular mortality may be more pronounced in women than in men.

Abstract:AbstractDioxins and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) are mainly released as by-products of human activities, often in the form of mixtures, and the potential harm on human health deserves attention. Therefore, our study aimed to analyze the combined effect of dioxins and DL-PCB exposures on hypertension (HTN) among US adults. Data of eligible participants were acquired from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Multiple logistic regression models with adjustment for covariates were applied to explore the associations between 13 persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and HTN. Stratified analyses and interaction analyses were then conducted by age and gender. Finally, the combined effects of dioxins and DL-PCBs on HTN were assessed by the weighted quantile sum (WQS) model and the Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) model. A total of 976 adults were included in our study, of whom 397 had HTN. Spearman correlations indicated positive correlations among 13 POPs. And most of them (except PCB28, PCB66, and 1,2,3,4,7,8,9-hpcdf) had significant effects on HTN. The result of WQS revealed that mixed exposure to dioxins and DL-PCBs was significantly associated with increased risk of HTN (OR: 2.205; 95% CIs: 1.555, 3.127). The BKMR model also presented a positive trend of HTN risk with exposure to multiple dioxins and DL-PCBs. And 1,2,3,4,6,7,8,9-ocdd may be the main factor for this positive association. Considering the limitations of our cross-sectional study with the small sample, further prospective studies are necessary to validate our findings.

Abstract:Evidence showing the association of perfluoroalkylated substance (PFAS) exposure with CVD risk is scarce. The objective of this study was to explore the relationships of CVD risk with mixed or individual serum PFAS levels among general adults. We analyzed combined data of 7904 adults who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2003–2012 with a Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) to examine the relationships of individual or mixed PFAS exposure with total CVD risk. A logistic regression model and restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression with multivariate adjustment were conducted to assess the relationships between individual serum PFAS levels and the risk of total CVD or its subtypes. A mediation model was applied to investigate how C-reactive protein (CRP) levels mediate the strength of the association. The BKMR results indicated a positive relationship between mixed PFAS exposure and total CVD risk; among the PFASs, perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) had the highest posterior inclusion probability. As determined by logistic regression, a log-unit change in PFOS levels was positively related to a higher risk of heart attack and stroke in males (both P < 0.05). A nonlinear relationship was found between PFOS levels and stroke risk ( P for nonlinearity = 0.04), as illustrated in the RCS plot. The mediation analysis showed that CRP levels mediated 8% and 1.2% of the relationship between serum PFOS and PFNA levels, respectively, and the prevalence of stroke. A significant relationship between higher serum PFAS concentrations and an increased risk of CVD was observed, mainly in males.

Abstract:Background/Objectives: Cardiovascular diseases are the primary cause of global morbidity and mortality, with cardiovascular health (CVH) remaining well below the ideal level and showing minimal improvement in the U.S. population over recent years. Bisphenol A (BPA), a pervasive environmental contaminant, has emerged as a potential contributor to adverse cardiovascular outcomes. This cross-sectional study delves into the impact of BPA exposure on achieving optimal CVH, as assessed by the Life's Essential 8 metric, among U.S. adults. Methods: Analyzing data from 6635 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) collected between 2005 and 2016, BPA exposure was quantified through urinary BPA levels, while optimal CVH was defined using the American Heart Association's Life's Essential 8 criteria, scoring between 80 and 100. Multivariable logistic regression and propensity score matching were employed to evaluate the association between BPA exposure and CVH. Results: This study reveals that individuals in the highest tertile of urinary BPA levels were 27% less likely to attain optimal CVH compared with those in the lowest tertile (OR, 0.73; 95% CI: 0.59–0.92). This negative association persisted across diverse demographics, including age, sex, and race, mirrored in the link between urinary BPA levels and health factor scores. Conclusions: The findings underscore the potential benefits of reducing BPA exposure in enhancing the prevalence of optimal CVH and mitigating the burden of cardiovascular disease. Given the widespread use of BPA, ongoing monitoring of BPA's impact on CVH is essential. Further studies are necessary to elucidate the long-term and causative connections between BPA and CVH. These insights contribute to understanding the complex interplay between environmental factors and CVH outcomes, informing targeted interventions to mitigate cardiovascular disease risk within the population.

Abstract:Background: Evidence for the relationship between individual and combined volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) is limited. Besides, the mediating role of biological aging (BA) has not been studied. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the association between VOCs and CVD risk and to explore the mediating effects of BA. Methods: Logistic regression models were used to investigate the relationships of metabolites of volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) and BA with CVD. In addition, weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression, adaptive elastic networks, and Environmental Risk Score (AENET-ERS) were utilized to assess overall associations of mixed VOCs co-exposure with CVD. Mediation analyses were used to identify potential mediating effects of BA. Results: In the single-pollutant model, CYMA was shown to be associated with an increased risk of CVD. Additionally, we identified significantly positive associations between the WQS index and CVD (odds ratio (OR) = 1.292, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.006, 1.660), and DHBMA had the greatest contribution for CVD (0.246). Furthermore, the AENET-ERS results showed that 8 mVOCs were significantly associated with CVD, and ERS was related to an elevated risk of CVD (OR = 1.538, 95%CI: 1.255, 1.884). Three BA indicators mediated the association of the mVOCs mixture with CVD, with mediating effect proportions of 11.32%, 34.34%, and 7.92%, respectively. Conclusion: The risk of CVD was found to increase with both individual and combined exposure to VOCs. BA mediates the positive effects of VOCs on CVD, suggesting that this pathway may be one of the mechanisms of CVD.
