Abstract:Biochar land application can potentially be used for carbon sequestration, improving soil quality, and reducing non-point source pollution. Understanding biochar mobility is important because its transport in soil greatly influences its stability, the dynamics of soil microbial communities and organic matter, and the movement of biochar-associated contaminants. Here, the transport of biochar particles was studied in saturated and unsaturated sand columns by measuring breakthroughs of biochar pulse under three pH and two ionic strength (IS) levels. Breakthrough curves (BTCs) were fitted to a convection-dispersion model with kinetic and equilibrium deposition sites to estimate the key transport parameters (e.g. biochar deposition rate coefficients). Biochar retention was enhanced by lowering pH and increasing IS, corroborating the trends of fitted deposition rate coefficients. Under both saturated and unsaturated conditions, effluent mass recoveries decreased, respectively, by a factor of 6.6 or 15 when pH decreased from 10 to 4 at 10 mM IS, and by a factor of 1.4 or 3.9 when IS increased from 10 to 100 mM at pH 7. Biochar retention was greater in unsaturated media, implying that saturated flow elutes more biochar particles. The particles larger than 5.4% of median grain diameter were filtered out of suspension during passage through the media; whereas, the retention of smaller particles was clearly dependent on solution chemistry. Similar to other types of colloids, this study highlights the importance of pH, IS, particle size, and soil water saturation in controlling biochar movement by soil matrix flow. Thallium release from biochar-amended soil to runoff in laboratory experiments

Abstract:Biochar has been widely used for trace metal(loid) (TM) immobilisation in contaminated soils. However, studies on the physicochemical mobility of TMs related to biochar application are highly limited, hampering the evaluation of the immobilisation efficiency of biochar. Therefore, after confirming the ability of biochar to decrease soil Tl bioavailability, this study examined the release of Tl in dissolved and particulate forms in surface runoff and leachate from soil mixed with biochar at different dosages and grain sizes under artificially simulated rainfall and irrigation experiments. The rainfall experimental results showed that the dissolved Tl in the surface runoff decreased from 1.30 μg in the control group to 0.75 μg and 0.54 μg in the groups with 3% and 5% biochar application, respectively. With the same dosages (5%), the finer the biochar applied, the higher the immobilisation ability achieved in surface runoff and the lower the Tl amounts in the leachate, indicating that the grain size of biochar can impact Tl mobility in dissolved forms. Comparisons between rainfall and irrigation experiments indicated that raindrops disturb the soil-water surface and enhance Tl diffusion. The mass in particulate form accounted for more than 95% of lateral released Tl in surface runoff. However, biochar application did not decrease the enrichment ratio of Tl in the eroded sediments. Notably, the finest biochar group produced less mass of eroded Tl owing to the low flux of soil erosion, indicating that grain size would indirectly impact sediment-bound Tl lateral mobility. Colloidal particles should be highlighted as they carried a maximum TI of up to 38% in the rainfall leachate. Focusing on the effect of biochar application on Tl chemical- and physical mobility from the soil matrix to runoff, this study contributes the comprehensive understanding of the role of biochar in TM remediation.

Abstract:The physicochemical properties of biochars undergo slow changes in soils due to the natural aging processes, which influences their interaction with heavy metals. The effects of aging on immobilization of co-existing heavy metals in contaminated soils amended with fecal and plant biochars possessing contrasting properties remain unclear. This study investigated the effects of wet-dry and freeze-thaw aging on the bioavailability (extractable by 0.01 M CaCl2) and chemical fractionation of Cd and Pb in a contaminated site soil amended with 2.5% (w/w) chicken manure (CM) biochar and wheat straw (WS) biochar. Compared to that in the unamended soil, the contents of bioavailable Cd and Pb in CM biochar-amended soil decreased by 18.0% and 30.8%, respectively, after 60 wet-dry cycles, and by 16.9% and 52.5%, respectively, after 60 freeze-thaw cycles. CM biochar, which contained significant levels of phosphates and carbonates, effectively reduced the bioavailability of Cd and Pb and transformed them from the labile chemical fractions to the more stable ones in the soil during the accelerated aging processes, mainly through precipitation and complexation. In contrast, WS biochar failed to immobilize Cd in the co-contaminated soil in both aging regimes, and was only effective at immobilizing Pb under freeze-thaw aging. The changes in the immobilization of co-existing Cd and Pb in the contaminated soil resulted from aginginduced increase in oxygenated functional groups on biochar surface, destruction of the biochar's porous structure, and release of dissolved organic carbon from the aged biochar and soil. These findings could help guide the selection of suitable biochars for simultaneous immobilization of multiple heavy metals in co-contaminated soil under changing environmental conditions (e.g., rainfall, and freezing and thawing of soils).
Co-transport and retention of zwitterionic ciprofloxacin with nano-biochar in saturated porous media: Impact of oxidized aging

Abstract:While biochar (BC) is used for contaminant remediation (i.e. antibiotics) in the field, geochemical aging can alter its chemical structure, releasing nano-sized BC (NBC, sizes ranging from approximately 200 nm to 500 nm), and further influence the environmental behaviour of antibiotics affiliated with BC. In this study, we comprehensively examined the sorption behaviour of NBCs with and without aging toward ciprofloxacin (CIP), their aggregation performance, and transport behaviour in porous media. The results showed that aging improved the oxygen-containing groups within the NBCs and made their surfaces more negatively charged. The thermodynamic enhancements of specific interactions (i.e. π-π interaction or Coulombic force) with CIP resulted in the enhancement of slow sorption (from 60–64% to 40–58%) and a higher normalised sorption capacity (Qe). The aggregation of NBCs was affected by changes in individual specific interactions and interfacial forces between the NBCs before and after CIP sorption. Further, aging could enhance the transport of NBCs both in the absence and presence of CIP. In addition to the interaction with the quartz sand surface, the contributions of aggregation and chemical heterogeneity caused by rebalanced specific interactions with CIP, may explain the observed transport behaviours of the aged NBCs in porous media. Additionally, the presence of NBCs, regardless of aging, suppressed the transport of CIP. Thus, mechanisms such as increased sorption sites due to aggregation and competitive sorption between NBCs and CIP, rather than the contribution of co-transport from NBCs, might play an important role in determining the fate of CIP in the natural environment.

Effect of combined aging treatment on biochar adsorption and speciation distribution for Cd(II)

Abstract:As a passivation material for heavy metals in-situ remediation, biochar (BC) has often been expected to maintain long-term adsorption performance for target pollutants. There is still lack of consensus about the impact of aging processes on biochar properties, particularly with respect to its long-term sorption performance. In this study, the changes to immobilization mechanisms as well as the speciation distribution of Cd(II) triggered by combined aging simulation (dry-wet, freeze-thaw cycle and oxidation treatment) on BC prepared under three levels of pyrolysis temperatures (300, 500 and 700 °C) were investigated. The results showed significant inhibition of aging on adsorption performance with the adsorptive capacity of BC300, BC500 and BC700 for Cd(II) decreased by 31.12 %, 50.63 % and 14.94 %, respectively. However, sequential extraction results indicated little influence of the aging process on the relative fractionation of Cd(II) speciation. The distribution of readily bioavailable, potentially bioavailable and non-bioavailable fractions of Cd(II) on BC showed only minimal changes post-aging. Overall, there was less Cd(II) sorption following aging, but the fractional availability (in relative terms) remained the same. Compared with 300 and 700 °C, the biochar prepared under 500 °C accounted the highest fraction of non-bioavailable Cd(II) (67.23 % of BC500, 59.17 % of Aged-500), and thus showed most promising for Cd(II) immobilization. This study has important practical significance for the long-term application of biochar in real environment.

Abstract:Soil contamination with toxic metals and metalloids has become a major threat to global food security. Among various immobilization agents that can stabilize toxic metal(loid)s effectively, biochar is promising due to its ability to restore soil health. Yet the aging characteristics of biochar following its amendment in soil remain poorly explored. Therefore, this study used standard biochars to depict their aging effects on remediation of metal(loid)-contaminated soil. A total of 2304 observations were made, including 6 biochar feedstocks (rice husk, soft wood, oilseed rape straw, miscanthus straw, sewage sludge and wheat straw), 2 pyrolysis temperatures (550 degrees C, 700 degrees C), 8 metal(loid)s (Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Sb, Pb), 4 aging methods (natural aging, freeze-thaw cycling, wet-dry cycling, chemical oxidation with H2O2), and 6 sampling intervals. Sewage sludge biochars exhibited the highest resistance to both artificial and natural aging, which may be related to the abundant oxygen-containing functional groups that favor metal complexation, and poorly-developed pore structures that limit the access of natural aging forces. A distinct relationship between ash and temperature was observed, where for high-ash biochars, an increase in pyrolysis temperature indicated lower resistance to aging, while for low-ash biochars, elevated pyrolysis temperature led to higher resistance. The aging behaviors of Cu and Sb were quite similar, which were both highly susceptible to chemical oxidation-induced dissolved organic carbon (DOC) release. Wet-dry cycling and freeze-thaw cycling revealed aging patterns that were similar to those of naturally aged soils as confirmed by cluster analysis. Lab aging data were then compared with existing biochar field aging results. Contrasting long-term immobilization performances were found in different studies, which were attributed to various causes associated with both biochar property and climate. The results of this study provide fresh insights into the long-term risks in the management of metal(loid)-contaminated agricultural soils.

Abstract:To investigate the adsorption effects of aged microplastics (MPs) on Pb(II) and their co-transport properties in homogeneous (quartz sand) and heterogeneous (quartz sand with apple branches biochar) porous media , we explored the co-transport of UV-irradiated aged MPs and coexisting Pb(II) along with their interaction mechanisms. The UV aging process increased the binding sites and electronegativity of the aged MPs' surface, enhancing its adsorption capacity for Pb(II). Aged MPs significantly improved Pb(II) transport through homogeneous media, while Pb(II) hindered the transport of aged MPs by reducing electrostatic repulsion between these particles and the quartz sand. When biochar, with its loose and porous structure, was used as a porous medium, it effectively inhibited the transport capacity of both contaminants. In addition, since the aged MPs cannot penetrate the column, a portion of Pb(II) adsorbed by the aged MPs will be co-deposited with the aged MPs, hindering Pb(II) transport to a greater extent. The transport experiments were simulated and interpreted using two-point kinetic modeling and the DLVO theory. The study results elucidate disparities in the capacity of MPs and aged MPs to transport Pb(II), underscoring the potential of biochar application as an effective strategy to impede the dispersion of composite environmental pollutants.

Abstract:Despite the extensive use of biochar (BC) in soil and aqueous media for pollutant immobilization, the environmental behaviors and health risks of aged BC with multiple pollutants, especially with metal ions possessing various valence states, remain unexplored. Here, we prepared fresh banana peel BC (BP-BC) and aged BP-BCs by acidification (ABP-BC) and oxidation (OBP-BC). ABP-BC was then chosen to explore its environmental behaviors (i.e., adsorption, desorption, and arsenic valence transfer) towards As(III)-Cu(II) and the combined cytotoxicity of BCs with As(III)-Cu(II) was investigated in Human Gastric epithelium cells (GES-1). Our results demonstrate that the aging process notably alters the physicochemical properties of BP-BC, including surface morphology, elemental composition, and surface functional groups, which are key factors affecting the long-term environmental behaviors of BC with As(III)/Cu(II). Specifically, the aging process significantly enhanced the adsorption of As(III) on BC but reduced the adsorption of Cu(II). Although the oxidation of As(III) to As(V) did not change much, the aging process improved the stability of ABP-BC-metal ion complexes, alleviating the release of As(III) in acidic solution. Consequently, the combined cytotoxicity induced by ABP-BC-As(III)-Cu(II) was reduced compared to BP-BC-As(III)-Cu(II). The study highlights the critical roles of the aging process in regulating the As(III) adsorption/desorption dynamics on BCs and their combined cytotoxicity in the presence of multiple metal ions.

Abstract:Photochemical/photocatalytic reaction, one of the aging pathway of biochar in soil, not only changed the physicochemical properties of biochar, but also affected the migration and transformation of pollutants. Wheat straw biochar was photocatalytic aged in a Fenton-like system using organic acid as buffer solution under light sources, the organic carbon release and surface chemical changes of biochar were investigated to illustrate the adsorption behaviors. With Fe(III) or alpha-Fe2O3 added, the total organic carbon (TOC) of aged biochar solution was influenced more by buffer system than light sources, with the highest of 420.59 mg L-1 in citric acid system. The production of the hydroxyl radical (OH center dot) at citric/Fe(III) system was higher than the oxalic/Fe(III) system under the Hg lamp and showed an increasing trend with time. With light exposure, the porous structure of the biochar altered and surface area increased from 7.613 to 29.74 m(2) g(-1). Meanwhile, the adsorption of cadmium ion by biochar aged in citric/Fe(III) system also showed an increased adsorption capacity with a maximum of 73.54 mg g(-1). So, a well understanding of biochar physicochemical properties changes under natural ecosystem was undoubtedly useful for scientific assessment the long-term feasibility of biochar as soil remediation.
Investigating the Aging Effects of Biochar on Soil C and Si Dissolution and the Interactive Impact on Copper Immobilization

Abstract:Aging tests were used to investigate the long-term effects of BC on the immobilization of Cu, and the soil silicon dissolution of three types soils (black soil, (BS), vegetable garden soil (VS) and red soil (RS)). Litchi branch biochars (BC) at 10% (w/w) were incubated with three Cu (400 mg/kg) contaminated soils. The effect on soil properties of pH, soil organic carbon (SOC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and available silicon content were investigated, along with the speciation distribution of Cu. The results indicated that SOC, DOC, and available silicon content (except, BC300) increased with the application of BCs. On the other hand, the DTPA (diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid) extractable Cu content in BS, VS and RS soils were reduced by 4–12%, 18–25%, and 12–19%, respectively. The Cu availability in all soils first increased, and then decreased during the aging process. The sum of the other four fractions, including the carbonate fraction and the inert component increased by 4–4.5% (BS), 1.4–2.1% (VS), and 0.5–1% (RS) respectively, over the long-term process. Moreover, during the whole aging process, the soil properties (such as pH, SOC, DOC and available silicon content) were almost stable. This study demonstrates that BCs, especially those produced at a higher temperature, are superior to those been produced at 300 °C in immobilizing Cu and releasing available silicon in soils. However, the remediation efficiencies were restricted by the soil type contamination status and remediation time.

Abstract:Low birth weight and length for gestational age are associated with a high risk of short stature and metabolic syndrome in adulthood. The mechanisms that link prenatal growth to adult stature and metabolic syndrome have not yet been entirely clarified. The aim of our study was to evaluate the relationship between standardized anthropometric measures at birth and insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I, IGF-II, insulin, adiponectin, and non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) cord blood levels in the general population. One hundred fifty-eight random newborn subjects (77F, 81M) from Genoa, Italy, were analyzed. Anthropometric parameters were measured and standardized according to standard Italian tables. Insulin values were treated as categorical, since in several cases the results fell below detection cut-off. Mean birth weight was 3,214.23∓488.99 gr and mean length was 49.82∓2.17 cm. Females had higher mean IGF-I (p=0.04), and were more likely to have insulin values either <2 μU/ml or >4.5μU/ml (p= 0.04) compared to males. Weight and length SD scores (SDS) were higher in subjects with elevated insulin levels (p=0.002). A moderate correlation was found between weight and IGF-II (r=0.354). Multivariable analysis demonstrated that standardized birth weight was associated with IGFII and insulin values. Our data highlight the importance of IGF-II in fetal growth and suggest that gender differences should be taken into consideration when evaluating prenatal growth.
Effect of biochar aging and co-existence of diethyl phthalate on the mono-sorption of cadmium and zinc to biochar-treated soils

Abstract:In this study, the influence of the aging process of pig-(PB) and P. orientalis-(POB) derived biochars on the sorption capacity of the biochar-treated soils for cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) with and without the co-existence of diethyl phthalate (DEP) was investigated. Additionally, the surface and internal characteristics of biochars were determined before and after their aging in soils. The PB-treated soil had a higher sorption capacity for Cd2+ and Zn2+ than the POB-treated soil. The sorption capacity of the biochar-treated soils for Cd2+ and Zn2+ increased with biochar application rates. After aging, the abundance of oxygen-containing functional groups on the biochar surface, and the pH and organic carbon content of the biochar-treated soils significantly increased, thereby improving the sorption capacity for Cd2+ and Zn2+. The sorption capacities of biochar-treated soils for Cd2+ and Zn2+ followed the order of 1-month aging > 6-month aging > fresh. The co-existence of DEP enhanced the sorption capacity of the fresh biochar-treated soils for Cd2+ and Zn2+, whereas this enhancing effect disappeared for the aged biochar treatments. Our findings provide insights into the interactions between mixed contaminants in biochar-amended soils and the long-term efficacy of biochar treatments on metal sorption to soils.

Contrasting impacts of pre- and post-application aging of biochar on the immobilization of Cd in contaminated soils

Abstract:Biochar has been used for immobilizing heavy metals in soils due to its abundant surface functional groups and mineral components. However, as carbonaceous material, biochar in soils is susceptible to natural aging, which could alter its structural properties and ability to retain heavy metals. In this study, the impacts of pre- and post-application aging on the properties of dairy manure and sawdust biochars and the significance of different mechanisms of complexation with surface functional groups and mineral precipitation for Cd immobilization in soils were investigated. The simulated natural aging including 25 dry-wet cycles and 25 freeze-thaw cycles decreased the pH of biochar from 8.2 to 10.7 to 7.5-9.7 while increased the release of dissolved organic carbon from 4.1 to 10.9 to 5.9-21.3 mg L-1, O/C ratios from 0.09 to 0.30 to 0.17-0.33, and O-containing functional groups, especially -OH and -C=O groups. New minerals such as CaC2O4 and MgO·MgCO3 were formed during freeze-thaw cycles. The capacity of pre-aged biochars to immobilize Cd in soils decreased from 57-70% to 53-63%, compared to that of fresh biochar, which was mainly due to decrease of CdCO3 or Cd3(PO4)2 precipitation as evidenced by XRD and MINTEQ modeling. By contrast, post-aging of biochar application in soil with dry-wet and freeze-thaw cycling had little effect on the biochar's alkalinity while increased the O/C ratios from 0.10 to 0.24 to 0.15-0.27 and intensity of O-containing functional groups. The immobilization capacity of biochars for Cd in soil increased from 44-68% to 59-73% due to the enhanced surface complexation with O-containing groups. In short, biochar subjected to pre-aging had a reduced capacity to immobilize Cd, while biochars with post-aging in soil increased its Cd immobilization capacity as a soil amendment.

Abstract:Aging is an important natural process affecting the physiochemical properties of biochar, while mechanistic understanding of its effect on the adsorbed heavy metals is still lacking. After adsorption of Cd2+ and Pb2+, biochars produced from wheat straw (WS) and maize straw (MS) at 300 and 500 ? (denoted as WS300, WS500, MS300, and MS500, respectively) were subjected to 60 cycles of wet-dry or freeze-thaw aging. The results showed that simulated aging treatment transformed the Cd2+ and Pb2+ adsorbed on the low-temperature biochars from the readily and potentially bioavailable fractions into the non-bioavailable one, while the fractionation of Cd2+ and Pb2+ adsorbed on WS500 and Pb2+ on MS500 barely changed. Spectroscopic characterization revealed that simulated aging enhanced the complexation of Cd2+ and precipitation of Pb2+ on the biochars. These findings suggest that heavy metals could be effectively immobilized on low-temperature biochars amended to contaminated soils in the long term.

Abstract:Fenton-like system formed in a natural soil environment deemed to be significant in the aging process of biochar. Aged biochars have distinct physico-chemical and surface properties compared to non-aged biochar. The aged biochar proved to be useful soil amendment due to its improved elements contents and surface properties. The biochar aging process resulted in increased surface area and pore volume, as well as carbon and oxygen-containing functional groups (such as C=O, –COOH, O–C=O etc.) on its surface, which were also associated with the adsorption behavior of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP). The biochar aging increased the adsorption capacity of 2,4,6-TCP, which was maximum at pH 3.0. The 2,4,6-TCP adsorption capacity of aged-bush biochar (ABB) and aged-peanut shell biochar (APB) was increased by 1.0–11.0% and 7.4–38.8%, respectively compared with bush biochar (BB) and peanut shell biochar (PB) at the same initial concentration of 2,4,6-TCP. All biochars had similar 2,4,6-TCP desorption rates ranging from 33.2 to 73.3% at different sorption temperatures and times. The desorbed components were mainly 2,4,6-TCP and other degraded components, which were low in concentration with small molecule substance. The results indicated that the aged-biochar could be effective for the long-term remediation of naturally organic polluted soils.
Biochar nanoparticles-mediated transport of organic contaminants in porous media: dependency on contaminant properties and effects of biochar aging

Abstract:Land application of biochar has been recommended as an effective soil amendment measure. Nonetheless, the applied biochar can accumulate co-existing contaminants. Meanwhile, nanoparticles formed due to biochar disintegration may facilitate contaminant transport in vadose zone and groundwater, posing a potential risk to the subsurface environment. Here, we show that the presence of pinewood- and rice straw-derived biochar nanoparticles (BCNPs) at parts per million level (~ 20 mg/L) can result in significant mobilization of hydrophobic, nonpolar contaminants (naphthalene and pyrene) and positively charged polar contaminants (trimethoprim and ciprofloxacin) in saturated sandy soil, but slightly inhibits the transport of negatively charged or neutral hydrophilic compounds (sulfamethoxazole and bisphenol A). With supplemental adsorption and desorption experiments we show that the ability of BCNPs in mediating contaminant transport (either enhancing or inhibiting) relies primarily on the extent of irreversible binding of a contaminant to the BCNPs. Sulfide reduction and leaching of organic carbon, two relatively mild (in terms of modification of physicochemical properties, e.g., surface O/C ratio) but widely occurring aging processes, facilitate co-transport of pyrene and bisphenol A with the BCNPs. However, this is mainly the result of increased mobility of the BCNPs (i.e., the carrier), rather than enhanced interactions between the BCNPs and the contaminants being carried. The findings underline the significant effects of BCNPs on the fate and transport of environmental contaminants, and further highlight the important role of aging in affecting environmental behaviors and effects of biochar materials. Abstract:Natural aging alters the surface physicochemical properties of biochars, which can affect the retention of heavy metals. This work investigated the effect of biochar aging on stabilization of heavy metals (Cd and Ni) and soil enzyme activities simulated with laboratory wet-dry (WD) and freeze-thaw (FT) cycling. A wheat straw (WS) biochar and a corn straw (CS) biochar were subjected to 30 WD or FT cycles, and Cd- and Ni-contaminated alkaline soils amended with the two fresh biochars (at 5% w/w) were subjected to 30-day constant moisture incubation and 30 WD or FT cycles. WD and FT aging caused slight reduction in the pH of the biochars, significant increases in their O contents and surface areas, and formation of new carbonate minerals. WS biochar was more effective than CS biochar at reducing the phytoavailable Cd in the soil, with reduction of 12.1%, 14.6%, and 12.9% under constant moisture incubation, WD aging, and FT aging, respectively. Reduction in phytoavailability of Ni by the addition of biochars was observed only under WD aging, by 17.0% and 18.5% in the presence of WS and CS biochars, respectively. Biochar amendment also reduced the distribution of Cd in the acid soluble and reducible fractions in all aging regimes. The addition of biochars decreased catalase activity in almost all aging regimes and invertase activity under FT aging, but increased urease activity under FT aging. Comparison of the enzyme activities in the soils amended with biochars under constant moisture and accelerated aging conditions indicates WD aging significantly decreased the activities of catalase, invertase, and urease in all treatments, while FT aging significantly increased urease activity in all treatments. These findings suggest that biochars can stabilize Cd in alkaline soils under changing environmental conditions, although the activities of some soil enzymes could be negatively impacted. Optical and molecular insights into dissolved organic matter release in soils induced by downward migration of biochar colloids

Abstract:Abstract The frequent wildfires and extensive biochar application accumulate biochar colloids in soils. The transport of biochar colloids may influence the release of soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) due to their high mobility and active surface, posing a detrimental impact on carbon cycle, pollutants behaviors, and water quality. Here, we examined the effect of pristine and aged biochar colloids on soil DOM release in three types of soils (black soil, fluvisol, and paddy soil) through adsorption and column experiments combined with fluorescence excitation/emission matrix spectroscopy (EEM) and fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS). Adsorption experiment showed that biochar exhibited little effect on soil DOM release, while transport experiment indicated that the downward movement of both pristine and aged biochar colloids significantly enhanced the release of soil DOM, especially black soil and fluvisol. EEM spectra indicated that a humic acid-like substance with large molecular weights was the primary DOM that enhanced release from black soil (10.9–12.0% enhancement) and fluvisol (6–8% enhancement) during biochar colloid transport. Condensed aromatic-like (22.8% and 19.4%) and tannin-like (18.4% and 18.9%) compounds are the primary molecules correlated to the enhanced release of humic acid-like substances. Although chemical aging resulted in a more negative surface of aged biochar colloids and slightly enhanced biochar colloid transport (up to 7.0%), it showed no distinct effect on the release of soil DOM. This study indicates that biochar colloids may cause an increase in DOM release when irrigation and rainfall occur, and more attention should be paid to the environmental impacts of biochar colloids from intensive biochar application and wildfires. Abstract:Purpose Fresh biochar was shown to effectively reduce concentrations of heavy metal in soil, but the influences of the aging processes of biochar and competitions from other elements are warranted to precisely evaluate the long-term effect of biochar. This work investigated the effects of water washing, oxidation, and coexistence of aluminum (Al) on cadmium (Cd) adsorption by biochars and oxidized biochars. Materials and methods The Cd adsorption and the competitive adsorption of Cd and Al to rice straw-derived biochars, before and after oxidation by HNO 3 /H 2 SO 4 , were investigated. Meanwhile, the structural characteristics and surface charges of primary and oxidized biochars, with and without Cd loading, were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and zeta potential. Results and discussion The adsorption of Cd onto fresh biochars was dominated by surface complexation of oxygen-containing functional groups via esterification reactions, which was regulated by solution pH. Oxidization (aging) introduced carboxylic functional groups to biochar surfaces, which served as additional binding sites for Cd. The Cd binding to biochars was significantly affected by the coexistence of Al via acidification and competition for adsorption sites. Conclusions The biochars exhibited high sorption capacities of Cd in soil, but soil acidification led to a counteractive of biochar’s liming effect and a reduction of Cd-binding sites; thus, the long-term effect of biochar for heavy metal immobilization should be paid more attention in acidic soil.
