Abstract:Under the background of high-quality development led by the new development concept in China, it is imperative to change the development mode, optimize the economic structure, and transform the driving force, and industrial upgrading is the necessary way to promote the optimization of the industrial structure and achieve high-quality economic development. Based on data covering 284 prefecture-level cities in China, this paper first calculates the green total factor productivity (GTFP) of each prefecture-level city and then constructs three spatial econometric models (SLM, SEM, and SDM) based on four spatial weight matrices to empirically analyze the impact of industrial upgrading on GTFP. The results show that the GTFP of all cities in China shows a fluctuating upward trend and significant spatial spillover effect. Both full-sample and regional heterogeneity tests show that industrial upgrading can promote growth in GTFP, but the promoting effect on different regions is different. Regarding the control variables, GTFP has an inverted U-shaped relationship with economic development; additionally, human capital and financial development play a driving role in GTFP, while population density plays a restraining role. Finally, based on the empirical findings, we propose a multipronged policy of differentiated industrial policy and a variety of complementary measures to promote GTFP growth.

Abstract:Industrial structure upgrading has a spatial spillover effect, which is an important way to accelerate urban green innovation and realize urban sustainable development. Therefore, it is very important to study the impact of industrial structure upgrading on urban green innovation. Using panel data of 260 prefecture-level and above cities in China from 2005 to 2019, this paper studies the spatial effect of industrial structure supererogation on green innovation by using the spatial Durbin model (SDM). The results show that both industrial structure upgrading and green innovation show a trend of regional agglomeration and fluctuation. The direct effect of an industrial structure supererogation on green innovation is significantly positive, while the indirect effect and total effect are significantly negative. The direct effect, indirect effect, and total effect of industrial structure rationalization on green innovation are significantly positive. This study can provide a useful reference for the coordinated development of industrial structure upgrading and green innovation.

Abstract:To achieve high-quality economic development in the process of promoting the development of China's environment quality, and green economy, green total factor productivity is an important indicator to measure high-quality economic development. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the impact of changes in energy and industrial structure on green total factors. Each specific province in China is taken as the research object, and the green total factor productivity index into green technology efficiency and green technology progress are decomposed in this paper. On the basis of constructing the industrial structure upgrading index and energy structure upgrading index, a fixed-effect model and threshold regression model are used to analyze the influence of industrial structure and energy structure on green total factor productivity and its internal mechanism. Results shows that green total factor productivity, industrial structure and energy structure all show a trend of "continuous rise in small fluctuations," but there is a spatial disequilibrium; the upgrading and optimization of industrial structure and energy structure can effectively promote the improvement of green total factor productivity, and the growth mainly comes from the improvement of green technology progress, not the improvement of green technology efficiency; the impact of the improvement of industrial structure and energy structure on green technology efficiency has a significant nonlinear trend of increasing marginal effect; the upgrading of the industrial structure has a stronger role in promoting green total factor productivity in the central and western regions than in the eastern region; while the optimization of the energy structure has a significant promoting effect on green total factor productivity in the eastern region, but has a certain inhibitory effect on the central and western regions.

Abstract:The driving force of high-quality development is to improve the total factor productivity. This paper examines this issue at the city level in China. First, input–output data are reconstructed, and then the green total factor productivity (GTFP) index of 264 Chinese cities during 2003–2018 is accounted based on the SBM-DDF-ML index under data envelopment analysis (DEA). The accounting results show distinctively temporal, regional, and city-scale heterogeneity in urban GTFP growth. Second, the analysis of the causal factors of urban GTFP growth in the framework of the new structural economics verifies the theoretical inference that structural factors not only lead to disparities in macroeconomic growth, but are also a key reason underlying heterogeneities in urban GTFP. Specifically, industrial comparative advantage based on resource endowments mainly works by optimizing the efficiency of resource allocation to enhance pure efficiency change, and its dynamics will also generate demand for technological progress to promote pure technological progress. Moreover, a mismatch between industrial structure and resource endowment structure is not conducive to improvements in urban productivity improvement, but the contemporaneous introduction of more advanced technologies can help reduce or even reverse this negative effect.

Abstract:Structural relationship between the antioxidant melatonin and the non-benzodiazepine hypnotic zolpidem (ZPD) suggests possible direct antioxidant and neuroprotective properties of this compound. In the present work, these effects were analyzed for zolpidem and four of its synthesis intermediates. In vitro assays include lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation studies in liver and brain homogenates. Intracellular antioxidant effects were analyzed by evaluation of free radical formation prevention in HT-22 hippocampal cells treated with glutamate 10 mM and measured by flow cytometer DCF fluorescence. The neuroprotective effect of these compounds was evaluated as neuronal death prevention of HT-22 cells treated with the same concentration of glutamate. Zolpidem was found to prevent induced lipid peroxidation in rat liver and brain homogenates showing figures similar to melatonin, although it failed to prevent protein oxidation. ZPD-I was the most effective out of the several zolpidem intermediates studied as it prevented lipid peroxidation with an efficiency higher than melatonin or zolpidem and with an effectiveness similar to estradiol and trolox. ZPD-I prevents protein oxidation, which trolox is known to be unable to prevent. When cellular experiments were undertaken, ZPD-I prevented totally the increase of intracellular free radicals induced by glutamate 10 mM in culture medium for 12 h, while zolpidem and ZPD-III partially prevented this increase. Also the three compounds protected hippocampal neurons from glutamate-induced death in the same conditions, being their comparative efficacy, ZPD–III>ZPD–I=ZPD.
Influence Mechanism of Industrial Agglomeration and Technological Innovation on Land Granting on Green Total Factor Productivity

Abstract:The influence of land granting on green total factor productivity (GTFP) and its mechanisms remain under-explored. Based on dynamic spatial panel data of 30 provincial administrative regions in China from 2007 to 2017, this study attempts to establish the framework of a transmission mechanism among land granting, manufacturing agglomeration and technological innovation, and green total factor productivity, and measures their interactions by the mixed directional distance function and Global Malmquist–Luenberger index model containing undesirable output. Then, this paper empirically estimates the impacts of land granting, industrial agglomeration and technological innovation on green total factor productivity in China with a dynamic spatial mediating effect model. The results show that the development paradigm of China’s industrial green economy is characterized by path dependence, and industrial GTFP has a significant spatial effect. Local governments rely on low-price competition to obtain cost advantages and facilitate the agglomeration of local manufacturing industries, and promote the impact of negotiation on industrial GTFP through the mediating effect of manufacturing agglomeration. There exists a non-linear relationship between manufacturing agglomeration and industrial GTFP. The land acquired through negotiation has a promoting effect on green technology innovation, and will foster industrial GTFP through the intermediary effect of technological innovation. No obvious non-linear relationship is observed between technological innovation and industrial GTFP. The grant of “Tender, Auction and Listing” has no significant influence on the industrial GTFP, and the mediating conduction effect on the GTFP of industry is not established. Industrial structure, government management and infrastructure will significantly promote the improvement of industrial GTFP, while the level of transportation will inhibit the improvement of industrial GTFP. Through administrative intervention in low-production capacity departments, local governments can integrate regional resource endowments, give play to the comparative advantages of industries, and achieve industrial structure upgrades and core competitiveness, which will be conducive to the improvement of industrial GTFP. High-level transportation conditions increase energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in transportation operation, which makes no contribution to the enhancement of industrial GTFP.

Abstract:China is experiencing a swift transformation from a rural to an urban society. This societal transition is the result of a country's ambition toward economic development. Rapid urbanization impacts on human wellbeing, environment, and infrastructure. Unlike many cases of urban extension, China's urbanization has led to increase in environmental issues, rather than to contain, and posed serious challenges to achieve sustainable development. To date, nevertheless, there is a little empirical enquiry on the spatiotemporal effects of multidimensional urbanization on green total factor productivity. Taking this into account, this article constructs a spatial panel data model based on 283 Chinese cities during 2006–2019. The results showed that the three types of urbanization (i.e., population, land, and economic) have positive effect on green total factor productivity (GTFP). Population urbanization has indirect positive effect on GTFP. Local land urbanization inhibits while surrounding land urbanization promotes GTFP. Economic urbanization has positive direct effect on GTFP. Considering regional heterogeneity, population and economic urbanization have positive effect on GTFP in eastern region. In central region, land urbanization significantly promotes GTFP, while economic urbanization has significant negative effect on GTFP. In the western region, the three types of urbanization are not conducive to GTFP. Considering sized heterogeneity, population and economic types of urbanization have significant negative effect on GTFP in small- and medium-sized cities. In large cities, the three types of urbanization have significant positive effects on GTFP. Considering temporal heterogeneity, the three types of urbanization significantly promote GTFP before 2014, but economic urbanization deteriorates GTFP after 2014. Our results recommend loosening Hukou system, improving land use efficiency, and developing technology and knowledge-intensive industries.

Abstract:Green development and the high-quality economic growth model have replaced the extensive growth model in an effort to reduce the large amounts of energy consumption and pollution emissions. Green total factor productivity has become an important indicator to more accurately measure the quality of economic growth. Transportation infrastructure is a fundamental component that may effectively integrate regional resources, increase regional cooperation, and encourage the sensible use of resources, and is a key factor in increasing productivity. At present, transportation infrastructure should focus on the speed of construction and the quality level, expand the radiation range of the transportation system, improve the service level of transportation facilities, and promote the spatial coordination between transportation facilities and resources and the environment in each province. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the spatial effect of the transport infrastructure on green total factor productivity in order to understand the role of transport infrastructure and its impact on the quality of economic growth. In this study, the slacks-based measure (SBM) model and the global Malmquist–Luenberger (GML) index were used to calculate the green total factor productivity of 30 provinces in China, while the spatial effect of the transportation infrastructure on green total factor productivity was investigated based on the spatial Durbin model. At the national level, road density, railway density, and road service level show positive spillover effects. The railway service level inhibits the growth of green total factor productivity, and there is obvious regional heterogeneity in transport infrastructure construction in eastern, central, and western regions. Therefore, in the process of transportation infrastructure construction, we should not only pay attention to the scale of expansion but also pursue the quality of service. At the same time, measures such as the flow of talent and the introduction of foreign capital within the region should be constantly coordinated to promote the improvement of green total factor productivity and achieve a win–win situation between economic growth and environmental protection.

Abstract:Improving green total factor productivity ( GTFP ) is an effective way to achieve efficient use of resources and low-carbon development in the transportation industry. Accurately grasping the spatial associated structure and its influencing factors of China's transportation GTFP is of great significance for promoting coordinated regional development. This study used the DEA-Malmquist model to measure China's provincial transportation GTFP from 2006 to 2019. The spatial associated matrix is constructed by the modified gravity model, and the social network analysis (SNA) method is used to analyze the structural characteristics and influencing factors of the GTFP spatial associated network. It is found that: 1) The tightness of the spatial associated network of China's transportation GTFP increased year by year, and the hierarchical spatial structure was gradually broken. 2) There are significant differences in the status of various regions in the spatial network. Among them, Shanghai plays the role of "leader" and "core participant", with the highest point centrality and eigenvector centrality; Jiangxi and Guangdong play the role of "intermediary" and "bridge"; However, Jilin, Qinghai, Ningxia, and other regions have a weak influence on the spatial correlation. 3) Spatial aggregation analysis shows that block I has a strong correlation with other regions, while the spatial correlation level of the other three plates is relatively poor. 4) QAP analysis shows that province adjacency, per capita GDP, and technological innovation have a significant positive impact on the spatial correlation. Therefore, the Chinese government should increase the level of informatization and create a regional coordinated development mechanism to optimize the overall development pattern of the transportation industry.

Abstract:One of the goals of China’s supply-side structural reform is to improve total factor productivity (TFP). Considering the problems of environmental deterioration and income disparity faced by China, this paper first incorporates environmental pollution and income disparity as undesirable outputs into the TFP analysis framework, and extends the concept of inclusive green TFP (henceforth IGTFP).We measure and analyze the IGTFP in China’s provinces from 1995 to 2017 using the Malmquist–Luenberger index, and then examine, for the first time, the impacts of economic structural optimization in the supply-side structural reform on the IGTFP. The results are shown as follows. First, China’s national IGTFP index is significantly smaller than the traditional TFP index. That is, the traditional TFP without the constraints of environmental pollution and income disparity overestimates China’s real TFP. Second, there are significant regional differences in China’s IGTFP, the average annual growth rate of IGTFP shows a gradual downward trend from east to west. This would further exacerbate the regional imbalance in China’s economic development. Third, among the structural factors in economic structure optimization, industrial structure and energy structure are negatively correlated with the IGTFP, while factor structure, labor structure and urban–rural structure are all positively correlated with the IGTFP. These results imply that the economic structure optimization driven by supply-side structural reform will improve China’s IGTFP.

Abstract:Purpose—The unbalanced layout of digital economy agglomeration has a significant impact on regional high-quality development. This study aims to explore the impact of digital economy agglomeration on regional green total factor productivity (GTFP) disparity from two aspects, including theoretical mechanism and empirical effect. Design/methodology/approach—Based on the empirical data of 285 cities above the prefecture level in China from 2003 to 2018, super-efficiency undesired SBM model, spatial Dubin model, and intermediary effect model are utilized to analyze how digital economy agglomeration affects regional GTFP disparity. Findings—The results show that the GTFP of China is on the rise as a whole, but the gap among cities is gradually expanding. Digital economy agglomeration has significant positive direct effects and positive spillover effects on GTFP, but digital economy agglomeration also aggravates the regional GTFP disparity due to disequilibrium industrial upgrading mechanism. Originality/value—The paper confirms the relationship between digital economy agglomeration and regional GTFP disparity for the first time. Different from previous studies, the industrial upgrading mechanism in this paper includes industrial structure upgrading and industrial spatial evolution. The study calls for the industrial bottleneck of "low-end locking" in underdeveloped cities to be noticed.

Abstract:Based on data of 285 Chinese cities from 2003 to 2017, this paper mainly studies the impact of the spatial agglomeration of Foreign direct investment (FDI) on the green total factor productivity(TFP) of Chinese cities by SDM model. It is measured that China's urban green TFP generally has been developing well from 2003 to 2017, and progress in green technology plays an important role in improving urban green TFP. Both global Moran index and local Moran scatter plots show that FDI and green TFP are characterized by strong spatial agglomeration. This suggests green TFP is closely related to the spatial agglomeration of FDI in a region. The paper finds that FDI plays a positive role in promoting green TFP in high-high and high-low cluster cities, and the technology spillover effect of highly agglomerated FDI is more significant than that of decentralized FDI, thus promoting the upgrading and agglomeration of green TFP in itself and surrounding cities. The positive benefits of low-high and low-low cluster cities are not significant. Therefore, it is necessary to go beyond its policy of administrative regions and give full play to radiation effect of High-high FDI agglomeration cities and promote the green TFP of their surrounding cities.

Industrial Co-Agglomeration and Urban Green Total Factor Productivity: Multidimensional Mechanism and Spatial Effect

Abstract:The impact of industrial co-agglomeration (ICA) on green total factor productivity (GTFP) has garnered considerable academic attention. However, there remains a gap in research systematically investigating how ICA affects China's GTFP within the framework of green development, specifically by analyzing transmission mechanisms, regulatory mechanisms, and spatial spillover effects. To address this gap, this study utilizes panel data from 283 Chinese cities, spanning the years 2006 to 2020, and conducts both theoretical and empirical analyses to examine ICA's influence on GTFP through these three mechanisms. Our findings indicate that ICA significantly enhances GTFP by alleviating the mismatch of capital and energy factors but does not improve GTFP by addressing labor mismatches. Furthermore, when the intensity of local government competition exceeds a threshold of 14.3825, the positive impact of ICA diminishes, whereas an environmental regulation intensity above 0.4381 strengthens ICA's positive effect on GTFP. ICA was found to substantially increase local GTFP and generate positive spatial spillover effects on surrounding cities within a 100 km radius. Co-agglomeration of both high-end and low-end producer services with manufacturing boosts local GTFP, while co-agglomeration of low-end producer services with manufacturing also enhances GTFP in adjacent cities. In megacities, ICA positively influences both local and nearby GTFP, whereas in large cities, ICA tends to suppress GTFP in neighboring areas. Additionally, with the exception of the Middle Yangtze River and Pearl River Delta city clusters, ICA in urban clusters enhances local GTFP; ICA in the Middle Yangtze River cluster promotes GTFP in neighboring areas, whereas ICA in the Chengdu–Chongqing cluster inhibits neighboring GTFP.

Abstract:By setting up an evaluation indicator system (EIS) containing bad outcomes for green full-factor productivity (GFFP), this work utilizes the super epsilon-based measure (Super EBM) model to assess the GFFPs of 11 regional-level administrative regions (regions) in the Changjiang Economic Area (CEA) from 2005 to 2019, and goes on to analyze the regional difference and spatial correlation between the regional GFFPs. On this basis, spatial measurement models were adopted to analyze how GFFP is affected by foreign direct investment (FDI), industrial structure optimization (ISO), and their cross term. The results show that: During the sample period, the GFFPs in the CEA exhibited large regional differences. Shanghai's GFFP fell on the efficient frontier. This state was not achieved by any other region in the CEA, leaving a room for improvement. In general, most regions in the lower basin of the CEA had satisfactory GFFPs, while those in the middle and upper basin had general GFFPs. Besides, the GFFP trends were similar in the upper, middle, and lower basin of the CEA. Before 2010, the GFFPs in all three regions did not change significantly. After that year, the GFFPs in the three regions began to decline. During the sample period, the Global Moran's I values of CEA GFFPs remained positive, and went through the test of significance in most years. Thus, the GFFPs were clustered prominently in space. Considering the results of spatial measurement models, the CEA GFFPs were significantly inhibited by FDI, and promoted by ISO; the cross term between FDI and ISO positively affected GFFP. Among the control parameters, economic growth and environment regulation clearly promote GFFP, urbanization level strongly inhibits GFFP, and energy structure does not significantly affect GFFP. The research results disclose the internal correlations between FDI and ISO in the transformation to green development: the benign interaction between FDI and regional ISO paves the way to green development for the CEA.

Abstract:The enhancement of industrial green total factor productivity is pivotal for achieving high-quality and sustainable economic development. This study assesses China’s performance using the SBM-GML model, employing province-level panel data spanning from 2004 to 2020. Furthermore, we examine the influence of green finance and technological progress on industrial green total factor productivity using a spatial econometric model. The findings uncover that the relationship between the level of green financial development and industrial green total factor productivity follows a U-shaped curve. Initially, low levels of green financial development exert a suppressive effect on industrial green total factor productivity, proving ineffective in the short term. However, with the progression of green finance development, a positive and significant long-term impact on industrial green total factor productivity emerges. Moreover, technological progress demonstrates a noteworthy promotional effect on industrial green total factor productivity. The analysis delves deeper into revealing that industrial structure and environmental regulation intensity exhibit a significant negative relationship with industrial green total factor productivity. In contrast, both energy structure and education level showcase a substantial positive relationship with industrial green total factor productivity.

Abstract:The digital economy is an important engine to promote sustainable economic growth. Exploring the mechanism by which the digital economy promotes economic development, industrial upgrading and environmental improvement is an issue worth studying. This paper takes China as an example for study and uses the data of 286 cities from 2011 to 2019. In the empirical analysis, the direction distance function (DDF) and the Global Malmquist-Luenberger (GML) productivity index methods are used to measure the green total factor productivity (GTFP), while Tobit, quantile regression, impulse response function and intermediary effect models are used to study the relationship among digital economy development, industrial structure upgrading and GTFP. The results show that: (1) The digital economy can significantly improve China’s GTFP; however, there are clear regional differences. (2) The higher the GTFP, the greater the promotion effect of the digital economy on the city’s GTFP. (3) From a dynamic long-term perspective, the digital economy has indeed positively promoted China’s GTFP. (4) The upgrading of industrial structures is an intermediary transmission mechanism for the digital economy to promote GTFP. This paper provides a good reference for driving green economic growth and promoting the environment.

Abstract:As China’s largest urban agglomeration with rapid growth of economy and population, the development of the Central Plains Urban Agglomeration (CPUA) has been severely restricted by environmental problems. Thus, the green development performance of the CPUA is worth studying. This study used the panel data of 29 cities in the CPUA from 2003 to 2018 based on the Slacks-based Measure and Global Malmquist–Luenberger index to measure the green total factor productivity (GTFP) and its decomposition index of each city. A spatial econometric model was developed to explore the factors affecting the GTFP of the CPUA. The results show that the GTFP of the CPUA had an upward trend in 2003–2018, but the productivity level was still low. There were significant spillover effect in the GTFP among different cities of the CPUA. The results of the spatial measurement model show that technological progress, industrial structure and solid waste environmental regulationhave a significant positive spillover effect on the GTFP. The, fiscal expenditure, and informatization level also have positive impacts on the GTFP. In the future, local government should provide technical and financial support for the development of green industries in the CPUA, and accelerate the construction of environmental protection infrastructures.

Abstract:Carbon emission reduction is becoming a global issue. Methods of reducing carbon emissions in developing countries have become a hot topic of discussion. Based on the obvious structural transformation in developing countries, this paper discusses the logical mechanisms among industrial structure upgrading, green total factor productivity improvements, and carbon emission reduction. In addition, this paper empirically tests these relationships with provincial data from 2000 to 2017 in China. The conclusions are as follows: (1) industrial structure upgrades have a significant impact on carbon emissions. The industrial structure rationalization remains a noteworthy inhibition on carbon emissions. The industrial structure’s advancement has obvious features of development at the current stage, and its effect on carbon emissions shows an inverted “V” trend, which is initially accelerating but then restraining. (2) Upgrades to industrial structures will decrease carbon emissions by raising green total factor productivity. (3) The rise of green total factor productivity in a certain region will have a relatively obvious inhibitory effect on carbon emissions, but it will exhibit a negative spatial spillover effect on the adjacent areas.

Abstract:Worsening environmental effects caused by the rapid large-scale urban expansion in most Chinese cities is a worrying trend. In response, China is advocating an economic transition from rapid (raw growth) to a high-quality development model that incorporates negative environmental consequences. Green total factor productivity (GTFP) is regarded as one of the important approaches for measuring high-quality development. Hence, the aim of this research is to quantify the impact of urban sprawl on GTFP using remote sensing data and spatial econometric models. The primary findings of this study are as follows. (1) The urban sprawl index presents a decreasing trend from 2005 to 2016, indicating that urbanization has slowed; (2) The GTFP scores of Chinese cities are not randomly distributed and thus present significant spatial spillovers; and (3) The results of spatial lag models reveal that spatial spillover of GTFP is significant and positive. In other words, increases in GTFP in neighboring cities promotes GTFP improvements in nearby cities. We also find that the impact of urban sprawl on GTFP is significant and negative, indicating that rapid urban expansion is a contributor to decreased GTFP growth in China. Moreover, urban sprawl has a negative effect on technical change and efficiency change. The main findings can provide policy makers in Chinese cities with scientific foundations to design and implement effective measures to improve GTFP.
