Abstract:Low-permeability reservoir pressure is difficult to maintain, CO2 miscible flooding is difficult to achieve for low-permeability reservoirs, and near-miscible flooding is a promising technology for enhancing oil recovery for low-permeability reservoirs. Aiming at the complex geological and development characteristics of China's continental low-permeability reservoirs, the system elaborated Sinopec's CO2 flooding theory, reservoir engineering optimization design, injection and production engineering and anti-corrosion technology, production CO2 recovery and utilization, and other technical developments and field tests. Happening. Based on the research of CO2 flooding mechanism, this paper takes a well-known oil field H 28 reservoir as the target, and conducts an indoor evaluation of CO2 flooding methods through core physical simulation experiments. The pilot test of CO2 flooding field shows that CO2 flooding can significantly increase the productivity of ultra-low permeability oil wells, improve the development effect of oil wells, and meet the needs of ultra-low permeability reservoir development, and has broad application prospects.

Abstract:The reservoir type of the MH oil field in the Junggar Basin is a typical low-permeability conglomerate reservoir. The MH oilfield was developed by water injection in the early stage. Nowadays, the reservoir damage is serious, and water injection is difficult. There is an urgent need to carry out conversion injection flooding research to improve oil recovery. The use of CO2 oil-flooding technology can effectively supplement formation energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve economic benefits. In order to clarify the feasibility of CO2 flooding to improve oil recovery in conglomerate reservoirs with low permeability, strong water sensitivity, and severe heterogeneity, this paper researched the impact of CO2 miscibility on production characteristics and mechanisms through multi-scale experiments. The aim was to determine the feasibility of using CO2 flooding to enhance oil recovery. This study initially elucidated the oil displacement characteristics of varying degrees of miscibility in different dimensions using slim tube experiments and long core experiments. Subsequently, mechanistic research was conducted, focusing on the produced oil components, changes in interfacial tension, and conditions for pore mobilization. The results indicate that the minimum miscibility pressure (MMP) of the block is 24 MPa. Under the slim tube scale, the increase in the degree of miscibility can effectively delay the gas breakthrough time; under the core scale, once the pressure reaches the near mixing phase, the drive state can transition from a non-mixed "closed-seal" to a "mixed-phase" state. Compared to the immiscible phase, the near-miscible and completely miscible phase can improve the final recovery efficiency by 9.27% and 18.72%. The component differences in the displacement products are mainly concentrated in the high-yield stage and gas breakthrough stage. During the high-yield stage, an increase in miscibility leads to a higher proportion of heavy components in the produced material. Conversely, in the gas breakthrough stage, extraction increases as the level of mixing increases, demonstrating the distinct extracting characteristics of different degrees of mixed phases. The core experiences significant variations in oil saturation mostly during the pre-gas stage. CO2 miscible flooding can effectively utilize crude oil in tiny and medium-sized pores during the middle stage of flooding, hence reducing the minimum threshold for pore utilization to 0.3 μm.

Energy Sources Part A Recovery Utilization and Environmental Effects

Abstract:CO 2 flooding in oil reservoir is a complex process, which includes fluid flow in fractured sandstone and interaction of CO 2 and displaced oil. In order to thoroughly understand the CO2 flooding characteristics in low-permeability fractured reservoirs, a series of CO2 flooding experiments were conducted based on the multi-field coupling experimental system. Considering the difference of the fractured cores, pore cores and pore-fracture model, the effect of fracture, injection pressure, CO 2 phase, and heterogeneity of horizontal composite on the CO 2 flooding were analyzed. The results show that the oil recovery of fractured core was 46.96%, 7.13% higher than that of pore core, and there was no relatively stable gas-oil ratio (GOR) stage. For the pore-fracture model, the final recovery of two models increased from 49.45% to 45.86% at 2 MPa to 78.83% and 77.35% at 8 MPa, and the pore core was the main contributor to enhance oil recovery. The supercritical CO 2 (sc-CO 2 ) enhanced the oil recovery in post-gas breakthrough state, which accounted for final recovery 65.02%. Compared with the vertical layered heterogeneity, the horizontal composite heterogeneity had less influence on the final oil recovery, with differences of below 2%, and the highest CO 2 utilization rate was occurred at the permeability model of Low-High-Low. The work provides insight on oil recovery improvement of CO 2 flooding in low-permeability fractured reservoirs.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide flooding is a strategic replacement technology for greatly enhancing oil recovery in low-permeability oilfields, which includes social benefits resulting from carbon emission reduction and economic benefits owing to the improvement of oil recovery. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop and apply the technology of CO2 flooding and storage in the petroleum industry. In reservoir conditions, CO2 is usually under a supercritical state, presenting both low viscosity and high diffusivity of a gaseous state and high density of a liquid state. The special phase behavior of CO2 directly affects its extraction capacity, resulting in the change of miscible behavior between CO2 and crude oil. In this paper, the ultra-high-pressure–high-temperature pressure–volume–temperature (PVT) system was used to evaluate the phase characteristics of CO2 during the process of reservoir development. The phase behaviors of the CO2/CH4/N2 crude oil system were compared and analyzed. Moreover, the matching mechanism between supercritical CO2 characteristics and oil–gas system miscibility was investigated and defined. This work deepened the understanding of the phase characteristics of CO2 in the process of miscible flooding, providing both theoretical guidance for the application of CO2 injection on oilfields and the essential scientific basis for the implementation of CCUS-EOR technology.

Abstract:With the attention paid to greenhouse gas emission reduction all over the world, CO2 capture, utilization and storage technology has developed rapidly. Predecessors have done a lot of work on the effect of CO2 on properties of the oil, the changes of parameters after CO2 injection are different. Through PVT, slim tube test and phase state simulation, this work studied the influence law of CO2 injection on the properties of heavy oil in offshore reservoirs in eastern China. It defines the adaptability and oil displacement mechanism of CO2 flooding in the reservoirs. In this work, 12 oil displacement experiments were carried out to quantify the effect of injection sequence, slug size, gas injection rate, and soaking time on oil recovery in the hydrogen carbon reservoir. These experimental results have indicated the influence of different factors on oil displacement effect. It provides strong evidence for the efficient development and enhanced oil recovery of the oilfield. The results indicate that the gas–water alternative injection is better than continuous water flooding or continuous CO2 flooding by improving the ultimate recovery at 8.9% and 12.7% respectively. A larger CO2 slug is beneficial to improve the ultimate oil recovery and the injection rate of CO2 slightly affects the ultimate oil recovery factor. Longer soaking time can improve the ultimate recovery either. The ultimate recovery increases rapidly with the soaking time when it less than 24 h, but the ultimate oil recovery hardly increases when the soaking time is longer than 24 h.

Abstract:Low-permeability reservoirs have become an important field of oil and gas development in China. CO2 flooding technology is an effective technical means for tertiary oil recovery. Although the asphaltene in the system is deposited in the form of a solid after CO2 injection into the reservoir in contact with crude oil, which causes a certain blockage to the reservoir, the dissolution during the injection process improves the seepage capacity of the reservoir as a whole, and the damage degree of CO2 flooding to low-permeability reservoirs under different injection modes is different. In this paper, the damage degree of asphaltene precipitation to low-permeability reservoirs under different injection modes of CO2 flooding is quantitatively characterized. The mechanism experiment of organic scale plugging after continuous CO2 flooding and CO2–water alternate flooding, the wettability experiment of reservoirs, and the evaluation experiment of CO2–water solution on rock dissolution are carried out, and the variation characteristics of relative permeability curve parameters are evaluated. In this paper, the damage degree of asphaltene precipitation to low-permeability reservoirs under different injection modes of CO2 flooding is quantitatively characterized. The mechanism experiment of organic scale plugging after continuous CO2 flooding and CO2–water alternate flooding, the wettability experiment of reservoirs, and the evaluation experiment of CO2–water solution on rock dissolution are carried out. The variation characteristics of relative permeability curve parameters are evaluated. The results show that the organic scale produced by CO2 flooding will block the pore throat of the rock, but, on the whole, the dissolution caused by the reaction of CO2 and chlorite is stronger, which makes the recovery rate of low-permeability reservoirs effectively improved. The organic scale blockage caused by CO2–water alternating flooding is weaker than that caused by continuous CO2 flooding. The dissolution effect is better and the permeability is higher. It can achieve a better oil displacement effect in pores with a pore size greater than 0.2 μm. On the whole, it can increase the core pore space and seepage channel, so that the recovery rate of low-permeability reservoirs can be effectively improved. This study has important theoretical and practical significance for improving oil recovery in low-permeability reservoirs.

Abstract:CO2 flooding can significantly enhance oil recovery. However, the research on the distribution of remaining oil after CO2-oil and the method of further enhancing oil recovery still needs to be strengthened. Traditional studies on the mechanisms of CO2 flooding to enhance oil recovery mainly focus on core displacement experiments. In order to better simulate the actual field conditions, we conducted a three-dimensional heterogeneous physical simulation experiment. Compared to conventional core displacement experiments, three-dimensional heterogeneous physical model displacement experiments align more closely with actual conditions at the oilfield site. This study establishes a large-scale indoor three-dimensional high-temperature high-pressure displacement physical model and employs three different oil displacement methods: CO2–Water alternating flooding, CO2–Water alternating combined with foam flooding, and CO2–Water alternating combined with imbibition agent flooding. The study investigates the distribution of residual oil and recovery in heterogeneous reservoirs under different injection and production methods. We proposed three experimental schemes to see which one would have better effects in the oilfield. Experimental results show that CO2–Water alternating flooding combined with different chemical flooding agents improves oil recovery. The CO2–Water alternating combined with an imbibition enhancer flooding method achieves the best results, with recovery increased by 16.3% and 1.7% compared to CO2–Water alternating flooding and CO2–Water alternating combined with foam flooding, respectively. The imbibition agent significantly improves wettability and spontaneous imbibition by reducing interfacial tension and resolving the issue of CO2 failing to enter small pores under low differential pressure conditions, thereby maximizing recovery and displacement efficiency.

Abstract:Based on practices of CO 2 flooding tests in China and abroad, the recovery factor of carbon dioxide capture, utilization in displacing oil and storage (CCUS-EOR) in permanent sequestration scenario has been investigated in this work. Under the background of carbon neutrality, carbon dioxide injection into geological bodies should pursue the goal of permanent sequestration for effective carbon emission reduction. Hence, CCUS-EOR is an ultimate development method for oil reservoirs to maximize oil recovery. The limit recovery factor of CCUS-EOR development mode is put forward, the connotation differences between it and ultimate recovery factor and economically reasonable recovery factor are clarified. It is concluded that limit recovery factor is achievable with mature supporting technical base for the whole process of CCUS-EOR. Based on statistics of practical data of CO 2 flooding projects in China and abroad such as North H79 block CO 2 flooding pilot test at small well spacing in Jilin Oilfield etc., the empirical relationship between the oil recovery factor of miscible CO 2 flooding and cumulative CO 2 volume injected is obtained by regression. Combined with the concept of "oil production rate multiplier of gas flooding, a reservoir engineering method calculating CO 2 flooding recovery factor under any miscible degree is established by derivation. It is found that when the cumulative CO 2 volume injected is 1.5 times the hydrocarbon pore volume (HCPV), the relative deviation and the absolute difference between the recovery percentage and the limit recovery factor are less than 5% and less than 2.0 percentage points respectively. The limit recovery factor of CCUS-EOR can only be approached by large pore volume (PV) injection based on the technology of expanding swept volume. It needs to be realized from three aspects: large PV injection scheme design, enhancing miscibility degree and continuously expanding swept volume of injected CO 2 .

Abstract:CO2 flooding is an effective enhancing oil recovery (EOR) method that is suitable for ultra-low permeability reservoirs. Generally, high heterogeneity and natural fracture development are the major characteristic of ultra-low permeability reservoirs, which can induce serious gas channeling issues. In this study, a systematic and comprehensive gas channeling control system has been formed to enhance the mobility control and sweep efficiency of CO2 flooding in ultra-low permeability reservoirs with different degrees of heterogeneity and fracture scales. Physical models are designed and fabricated to perform the laboratory experiments for investigating the performance and applicable limits of multi-stage gas channeling control system.Experimental results indicate that continuous CO2 flooding is more suitable for applying in ultra-low permeability reservoirs compared with water flooding. CO2 flooding is a preferred EOR method applied in the homogeneous model with the permeability from 10 × 10−3 μm2 to 0.1 × 10−3 μm2 or heterogeneous model with the permeability ratio (the ratio between the permeability values of each half layer) of less than or equal to 5, whose elevated oil recovery is all more than 20%. As the permeability ratio is from 5 to 30, the primary-stage gas channeling control system is a much suitable method which depends on CO2 mobility control to improve sweep efficiency and oil production, and the oil recovery can be improved from 16.88% to 22.46%. Besides, CO2-thickener flooding can mitigate the gas channeling to some extent by controlling CO2 mobility in weakly heterogeneous models. To the permeability ratio of more than 30 or even to small-scale fracture, secondary-stage gas channeling control system can effectively reduce the flowing capacity of CO2 in the microcosmic or macroscopic small-scale gas channeling path and play a role in profile control, which improves oil recovery for more than 12%. To high permeability path and intermediate-scale or large-scale fractures, tertiary-stage gas channeling control system is selected as a blocking agent which can availably block off both macroscopic and microcosmic gas channeling path, and its elevated oil recovery is all more than 34%.

Abstract:The mechanism by which oil recovery can be enhanced by different injection methods of CO2 miscible flooding to alleviate the influence of heterogeneous reservoirs was studied to optimize the injection methods, further improving oil recovery. According to the reservoir heterogeneity characteristics of the TI oil formation group in Lunnan Oilfield, a 1 m double-layer long core was designed and prepared for four CO2 miscible displacement experiments with different injection methods. By analyzing the variation in the injection-production parameters, the displacement effects of different injection methods were compared, and the mechanism of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) was summarized. The results indicate the following. ① The displacement efficiency of the different injection methods lies in the following order. Alternate CO2-water injection, continuous CO2 flooding, cyclic CO2 flooding, and alternate CO2-hydrocarbon gas injection. ② The recovery of crude oil via CO2 miscible flooding in heterogeneous reservoirs relies on both convective diffusion and miscible mass transfer. Convective diffusion depends mainly on control of the displacement pressure differential and the plugging of preferential seepage channels in high-permeability areas, while miscible mass transfer depends mainly on the swept range of the convective diffusion and the degree of miscibility between CO2 and crude oil. ③ To improve the recovery efficiency of CO2 miscible flooding in heterogeneous reservoirs, it is necessary to choose an injection method that optimizes these two aspects.

Abstract:The Lunnan Oilfield in the Tarim Basin is known for its abundant oil and gas resources. However, the marine clastic reservoir in this oilfield poses challenges due to its tightness and difficulty in development using conventional water drive methods. To improve the recovery rate, this study focuses on the application of carbon dioxide flooding after a water drive. Indoor experiments were conducted on the formation fluids of the Lunnan Oil Formation, specifically investigating gas injection expansion, thin tube, long core displacement, oil and gas phase permeability, and solubility. By injecting carbon dioxide under the current formation pressure, the study explores the impact of varying amounts of carbon dioxide on crude oil extraction capacity, high-pressure physical parameters of crude oil, and phase characteristics of formation fluids. Additionally, the maximum dissolution capacity of carbon dioxide in formation water is analyzed under different formation temperatures and pressures. The research findings indicate that the crude oil extracted from the Lunnan Oilfield exhibits specific characteristics such as low viscosity, low freezing point, low-medium sulfur content, high wax content, and medium colloid asphaltene. The measured density of carbon dioxide under the conditions of the oil group is 0.74 g/cm3, which closely matches the density of crude oil. Additionally, the viscosity of carbon dioxide is 0.0681 mPa·s, making it well-suited for carbon dioxide flooding. With an increase in the amount of injected carbon dioxide, the saturation pressure and gas-oil ratio of the crude oil also increase. As the pressure rises, carbon dioxide dissolves rapidly into the crude oil, resulting in a gradual increase in the gas-oil ratio, expansion coefficient, and saturation pressure. As the displacement pressure decreases, the degree of carbon dioxide displacement initially decreases slowly, followed by a rapid decrease. Moreover, an increase in the injection rate of carbon dioxide pore volume leads to a rapid initial improvement in oil-displacement efficiency, followed by a slower increase. Simultaneously, the gas-oil ratio exhibits a slow increase initially, followed by a rapid rise. Furthermore, as the displacement pressure increases, the solubility of carbon dioxide in water demonstrates a linear increase. These research findings provide valuable theoretical data to support the use of carbon dioxide flooding techniques for enhancing oil recovery.

Abstract:With the development of humankind, energy demand and climate change have both faced with serious situations now. In order to find new technologies for solving these problems, long core displacement experiment concerning CO2 flooding is conducted with 11 different core samples from N formation in M oilfield. Results show that oil production rate will be greatly improved and the oil recovery can reach nearly 25% by the CO2 huff and puff process using 3 rounds which is much higher than the real recovery factor in M oilfield. Considering the enhanced oil recovery and carbon storage effects generated by this technique at the same time, CO2 flooding is definitely a promising technique with great potential both for sustainable development of oil companies and humankind. For large scale field application, it is suggested that oil companies and governments should provide corresponding support policy concerning further study of this technology. Particularly, further studies should focus on the application of CO2 flooding with other EOR technologies, optimal CO2 injection mode, optimal CO2 injection rate, optimal CO2 injection pressure and so on.

Abstract:With the exploitation of oilfields, the oil production efficiency of traditional water flooding has been very low, and CO2-enhanced oil recovery (EOR) has become an inevitable trend of development. CO2-EOR is affected by many factors, among which the heterogeneity of reservoirs is one of the main influencing factors. In order to understand the impact of different reservoir conditions on the production of oil from CO2 and the reasons behind it, and on the basis of researching the heterogeneity of reservoir porosity and permeability and its influence on the CO2-enhanced oil recovery process, this study has altogether established three different reservoir characteristics for comparative analysis. Under the homogeneous and heterogeneous porosity and permeability conditions of a reservoir, the displacement characteristics during a CO2–oil displacement process were analyzed. The layered heterogenous model had the best oil displacement effect, with its oil displacement amount reaching 8.46 × 104 kg, while the homogeneous model and the spatially heterogenous model had lower values; they were 1.51 × 104 and 1.42 × 104, respectively. The results indicate that the heterogeneous conditions overall improved the flooding effect of CO2. Under the same injection volume and other reservoir conditions, the cumulative oil flooding effect of the layered heterogenous model was the best compared to the homogeneous and spatially heterogeneous models. Good permeability promotes the accumulation of oil, leading to a higher saturation of the oleic phase. This work provides an in-depth analysis of the effect of the non-uniform distribution of formation permeability on CO2-enhanced oil recovery and can help to improve carbon sequestration efficiency and oil recovery in CO2–oil recovery projects.

Abstract:In recent years, supercritical CO2 flooding has become an effective method for developing low-permeability reservoirs. In supercritical CO2 flooding different factors influence the mechanism of its displacement process for oil recovery. Asynchronous injection–production modes can use supercritical CO2 to enhance oil recovery but may also worsen the injection capacity. Cores with high permeability have higher oil recovery rates and better injection capacity, however, gas channeling occurs. Supercritical CO2 flooding has a higher oil recovery at high pressure levels, which delays the occurrence of gas channeling. Conversely, gas injection has lower displacement efficiency but better injection capacity at the high water cut stage. This study analyzes the displacement characteristics of supercritical CO2 flooding with a series of experiments under different injection and production parameters. Experimental results show that the gas breakthrough stage has the fastest oil production and the supercritical CO2 injection capacity variation tendency is closely related to the gas–oil ratio. Further experiments show that higher injection rates represent significant ultimate oil recovery and injection index, providing a good reference for developing low-permeability reservoirs.

Abstract:The beach-bar sand reservoir of the Sha 4 Member of the Shahejie Formation in the Dongying Sag is the main oil-bearing formation in this area. In recent years, its proven reserves have been getting lower and lower, and the poor petrophysical properties of the reservoir have made water injection development difficult. In turn, it results in a rapid decline in elastic development productivity and low oil recovery. In this study, the experimental evaluation and numerical simulation research on the adaptability of CO 2 flooding in beach-bar sand reservoirs are carried out on the basis of fully investigating the successful examples of CO 2 flooding conducted by the previous. According to the geological characteristics of the reservoir in the CL area of the Dongying Sag, the reasonable reservoir engineering parameters and surface injection procedures for the CO 2 flooding have been formulated. Experiments show that after the completion of water flooding, the recovery factor of the CO 2 continuous flooding is 85.64%. It proves that the recovery factor of the CO 2 flooding is higher than that of the water flooding. Field tests have shown that CO 2 molecules in beach-bar sand reservoirs behave in a supercritical state underground, which is easier to being injected into the reservoir than water. In addition, the displacement distance of the CO 2 is obviously larger than that of the water injection development. The gas-oil ratio variation of different flooding types is different, and CO 2 flooding can effectively increase the formation energy, and improve the oil recovery and economic benefits of this type of reservoir.

Abstract:Understanding the CO2 displacement mechanism in ultra-low-permeability reservoirs is essential for improving oil recovery. In this research, a series of displacement experiments were conducted on sandstone core samples from the Chang 6 reservoir in the Huaziping area using a multifunctional core displacement apparatus and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) technology. The experiments were designed under conditions of constant pressure, variable pressure, and constant effective confining stress to simulate various reservoir scenarios. The results indicated that the distribution characteristics of the pore structure in the rock samples significantly influenced the CO2 displacement efficiency. Specifically, under identical conditions, rock cores with a higher macropore ratio exhibited a significantly enhanced recovery rate, reaching 68.21%, which represents a maximum increase of 31.97% compared to cores with a lower macropore ratio. Though fractures can facilitate CO2 flowing through pores, the confining pressure applied during displacement caused a partial closure of fractures, resulting in reduced rock permeability. Based on the oil-to-gas ratio and oil recovery in the outlet section of the fractured rock samples, the CO2 displacement process exhibited five stages of no gas, a small amount of gas, gas breakthrough, large gas channeling, and gas fluctuation. Although the displacement stage of different cores varies, the breakthrough stage consistently occurs within the range of 2 PV. These insights not only enhance our understanding of CO2 displacement mechanisms in low-permeability reservoirs but also provide actionable data to inform the development of more effective CO2-EOR strategies, significantly impacting industrial practices.

Abstract:CO 2 flooding is a promising EOR method. Chemical additives reduce oil viscosity and CO 2 -oil interfacial tension. In this study, we propose a multiphase and multi-component model based on the LBM to examine the effectiveness of CO 2 flooding and identify the factors that influence its performance. Additionally, we present a novel approach for simulating CO 2 -chemical additive composite system (CCAS) flooding by modifying fluid interaction parameters and reducing oil viscosity when exposed to chemicals. A comparison was conducted between the CO 2 flooding approach and the CO 2 -chemical additive compound systems. The results show that the force between fluid molecules has a significant impact on interfacial tension and miscibility, affecting the displacement process. The viscosity and injection speed of the displaced fluid play a crucial role in determining the initial momentum and CO 2 displacement performance. Additionally, reservoir rock morphology has an impact on the velocity of fluid molecules, and affects the displacement efficiency. The CCAS flooding has the potential to increase oil recovery by 15% compared to using CO 2 flooding alone. Optimizing additive concentration, injection timing, and injection rate can further improve oil displacement efficiency by 5%-10%. Valuable theoretical guidance for applying CO 2 chemical additives is provided by these research findings.

Abstract:Separate-layer CO2 flooding has increasingly been used to improve the overall development of multi-layer heterogeneous reservoirs. Due to their field technical limitations, layer combinations have to be carried out to reduce the number of layer-groups required for the separate injection of CO2. Currently there are few studies of the method of designing layer combinations. In field practice, the layer combinations are often made based on the permeability ratio of the layers to be developed, but it is not possible to accurately obtain the optimal scheme in many cases. Therefore, in this paper, a new design and optimization method based on the weighted standard deviation of permeability is proposed, which comprehensively considers the effects of multiple geological and fluid properties in different layers. The new method is applied to study the layer combination schemes in separate-layer CO2 flooding in H block, Daqingzijing Oilfield, Jilin, China. The prioritization of all of the schemes is obtained via the method, and a related numerical model is also established to perform verification and quantitative analysis. The results show that designing layer combinations using the new proposed method can achieve better development effect than using the conventional permeability ratio based method. It can achieve a more uniform interlayer CO2 displacement with an obvious improvement in the CO2 swept volume in low permeability layers and a higher overall oil recovery. According to the numerical simulation results, using the optimal layer combination scheme designed via the new proposed method, the ten-year swept volume of CO2 in the low permeability layer can be increased by 16.2%, and the ten-year overall oil recovery efficiency can be increased by 3.3%, with both measures showing a remarkable improvement. The work can provide a significant reference point for the field design of layer combinations in separate-layer CO2 flooding.

Abstract:The recoverable hydrocarbon reserves of conventional oil and gas resources are very limited in China. As important alternative resources, unconventional oil and gas have become a research hotspot. Though tight reservoirs have great potential to alleviate the increasing demand, issues during the development process, such as the rapid pressure depletion, fast decline in production, low productivity, and difficulties in water injection, are usually encountered due to poor physical properties like small pore throats and strong heterogeneity of the pore structure. The CO2 flooding technique could effectively replace crude oil from micro-nanopores, which is considered as a promising way to enhance the development performance of tight oil. However, precipitation and dissolution phenomena usually occur along with the CO2 injection process into reservoirs, affecting the pore structure evolution and oil displacement efficiency. In addition, artificial and natural fractures will even make this process more complicated. This paper presents the commonly used experimental approaches for CO2 injection into tight reservoirs and summarizes the main methods for investigating the influence of CO2 injection on the pore structure of reservoir rocks. Based on this, we highlighted that more attention should be paid to the influence of fractures and their dynamic changes on the evolution of pore structure during CO2 injection and the study of the solid–liquid interactions. To establish a method that could quantitatively evaluate the full-scale evolution of pore throats after CO2 injection is necessary. Meanwhile, the interaction strength of precipitation and dissolution and their effects on pore structure also remain open. Finally, a rigorous framework that could reveal the evolution mechanism and characterize the multiscale pore structure involving multiple influencing factors is urgently warranted.

Abstract:The injection of carbon dioxide (CO2) in low-permeable reservoirs can not only mitigate the greenhouse effect on the environment, but also enhance oil and gas recovery (EOR). For numerical simulation work of this process, relative permeability can help predict the capacity for the flow of CO2 throughout the life of the reservoir, and reflect the changes induced by the injected CO2. In this paper, the experimental methods and empirical correlations to determine relative permeability are reviewed and discussed. Specifically, for a low-permeable reservoir in China, a core displacement experiment is performed for both natural and artificial low-permeable cores to study the relative permeability characteristics. The results show that for immiscible CO2 flooding, when considering the threshold pressure and gas slippage, the relative permeability decreases to some extent, and the relative permeability of oil/water does not reduce as much as that of CO2. In miscible flooding, the curves have different shapes for cores with a different permeability. By comparing the relative permeability curves under immiscible and miscible CO2 flooding, it is found that the two-phase span of miscible flooding is wider, and the relative permeability at the gas endpoint becomes larger.
