Abstract:Removal of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from water through the use of various sorbents is often considered an economically viable way for supplementing conventional methods. Biochar has been widely studied for its potential adsorption capabilities for soluble N and P, but the performance of different types of biochars can vary widely. In this review, we summarized the adsorption capacities of biochars in removing N (NH4-N and NO3-N) and P (PO4-P) based on the reported data, and discussed the possible mechanisms and influencing factors. In general, the NH4-N adsorption capacity of unmodified biochars is relatively low, at levels of less than 20 mg/g. This adsorption is mainly via ion exchange and/or interactions with oxygen-containing functional groups on biochar surfaces. The affinity is even lower for NO3-N, because of electrostatic repulsion by negatively charged biochar surfaces. Precipitation of PO4-P by metals/metal oxides in biochar is the primary mechanism for PO4-P removal. Biochars modified by metals have a significantly higher capacity to remove NH4-N, NO3-N, and PO4-P than unmodified biochar, due to the change in surface charge and the increase in metal oxides on the biochar surface. Ambient conditions in the aqueous phase, including temperature, pH, and co-existing ions, can significantly alter the adsorption of N and P by biochars, indicating the importance of optimal processing parameters for N and P removal. However, the release of endogenous N and P from biochar to water can impede its performance, and the presence of competing ions in water poses practical challenges for the use of biochar for nutrient removal. This review demonstrates that progress is needed to improve the performance of biochars and overcome challenges before the widespread field application of biochar for N and P removal is realized.
Influence of Pyrolysis Temperature on Production of Digested Sludge Biochar and Its Application for Ammonium Removal from Municipal Wastewater

Abstract:Water contamination by ammonium (NH4+) can present considerable risks to natural ecosystems. This work evaluates the potential application of biochar, produced from the pyrolysis of digested sludge, to remove ammonium from water. Anaerobic digester sludge was collected from a municipal wastewater treatment plant in Alberta, Canada, and individual biochars were produced at 50 degrees C temperature increments between 350 degrees C and 550 degrees C. The chemical characteristics of the resulting biochars were determined using elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), BET surface area analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Our findings demonstrate that the biochar yield decreased with increasing pyrolysis temperature, and biochar produced at 450 degrees C (BC450) had the highest ammonium removal capacity due to its higher surface area and functional group density. The Langmuir isotherm best described the observed ammonium removal capacity by the biochars, indicating that monolayer chemical adsorption may be the dominating mechanism. Biochar ammonium removal capacity was 1.2 mg NH4-N per gram of biochar in municipal wastewater, which is lower than that observed in parallel experiments using a synthetic ammonium solution (1.4 mg NH4+-N/g biochar). This phenomenon is likely due to competition between ammonia and other containments for sorption to biochar surface sites. Our results demonstrate for the first time ever that biochar produced from digester sludge is a promising adsorbent for ammonium removal from municipal wastewater. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Effect of fish oil on ventricular tachyarrhythmia and death in patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillators: the Study on Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Ventricular Arrhythmia (SOFA) randomized trial.

Abstract:CONTEXT Very-long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3 PUFAs) from fish are thought to reduce risk of sudden death, possibly by reducing susceptibility to cardiac arrhythmia. OBJECTIVE To study the effect of supplemental fish oil vs placebo on ventricular tachyarrhythmia or death. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PATIENTS The Study on Omega-3 Fatty acids and ventricular Arrhythmia (SOFA) was a randomized, parallel, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial conducted at 26 cardiology clinics across Europe. A total of 546 patients with implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) and prior documented malignant ventricular tachycardia (VT) or ventricular fibrillation (VF) were enrolled between October 2001 and August 2004. Patients were randomly assigned to receive 2 g/d of fish oil (n = 273) or placebo (n = 273) for a median period of 356 days (range, 14-379 days). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE Appropriate ICD intervention for VT or VF, or all-cause death. RESULTS The primary end point occurred in 81 (30%) patients taking fish oil vs 90 (33%) patients taking placebo (hazard ratio [HR], 0.86; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.64-1.16; P = .33). In prespecified subgroup analyses, the HR was 0.91 (95% CI, 0.66-1.26) for fish oil vs placebo in the 411 patients who had experienced VT in the year before the study, and 0.76 (95% CI, 0.52-1.11) for 332 patients with prior myocardial infarctions. CONCLUSION Our findings do not indicate evidence of a strong protective effect of intake of omega-3 PUFAs from fish oil against ventricular arrhythmia in patients with ICDs. Eco-friendly, Stable, and High-Performance Biochar Prepared by a Twice-Modification Scheme: Saccharification of Raw Materials & Thermal Air Oxidation of Biochar

Abstract:Organic pollutants, such as phenolic compounds, pose significant risks to both the environment and human health. While biochar is an effective adsorbent for removing these pollutants, its dissolved solid (DS) components can lead to the loss of functional groups, structural disintegration, unstable performance, and environmental issues. This study introduces a twice-modification scheme designed to produce a biochar (BC-M) that combines high stability with superior performance. The process begins with the preparation of a stable biochar from cellulase-treated lignocellulose. This precursor biochar is then subjected to thermal air oxidation to enhance its oxygen-containing functional groups, thereby improving its adsorption capabilities. A mathematical model was developed to explore the relationship between different thermal air oxidation conditions and the properties of BC-M, aiming to optimize both adsorption capacity and DS. The model's multi-objective optimization indicated the optimal modification conditions. Compared to unmodified biochar (BC-O), BC-M showed significant improvements: its specific surface area increased by 63.6%, pore volume by 139%, and functional groups by 50%–1271%. Notably, the DS of BC-M was reduced to just 1.08 mg/L, representing a 97.5% reduction from BC-O, with a minimal mass loss of only 0.78 ± 0.45% during modification. BC-M also demonstrated a remarkable enhancement in the adsorption of phenolic compounds, with a capacity 21%–2408% higher than BC-O. Furthermore, calculations indicated that BC-M could reduce carbon emissions by 0.70 t CO2/yr/t, outperforming activated carbon in this regard. This study offers valuable insights into biochar modification, providing a low-cost, high-stability, and high-efficiency alternative for environmental cleanup.

Abstract:Excessive amounts of sodium cations (Na+) in water is an important limiting factor to reuse poor quality water in agriculture or industry, and recently, much attention has been paid to developing cost-effective and easily available water desalination technology that is not limited to natural resources. Biochar seems to be a promising solution for reducing high loads of inorganic contaminant from water and soil solution, and due to the high availability of biomass in agriculture and forestry, its production for these purposes may become beneficial. In the present research, wheat straw, sunflower husk, and pine-chip biochars produced at 250, 450 and 550 °C under simple torrefaction/pyrolysis conditions were chemically modified with ethanol or HCl to determine the effect of these activations on Na sorption capacity from aqueous solution. Biochar sorption property measurements, such as specific surface area, cation exchange capacity, content of base cations in exchangeable forms, and structural changes of biochar surface, were performed by FTIR and EPR spectrometry to study the effect of material chemical activation. The sorption capacity of biochars and activated carbons was investigated by performing batch sorption experiments, and adsorption isotherms were tested with Langmuir’s and Freundlich’s models. The results showed that biochar activation had significant effects on the sorption characteristics of Na+, increasing its capacity (even 10-folds) and inducing the mechanism of ion exchange between biochar and saline solution, especially when ethanol activation was applied. The findings of this study show that biochar produced through torrefaction with ethanol activation requires lower energy demand and carbon footprint and, therefore, is a promising method for studying material applications for environmental and industrial purposes.

Abstract:Biochar activation methods have attracted extensive attention due to their great role in improving sorptive properties of carbon-based materials. As a result, chemically modified biochars gained application potential in the purification of soil and water from xenobiotics. This paper describes changes in selected physicochemical properties of high-temperature wheat-straw biochar (BC) upon its deashing. On the pristine and chemically activated biochar (BCd) retention of five pesticides of endocrine disrupting activity (carbaryl, carbofuran, 2,4-D, MCPA and metolachlor) was studied. Deashing resulted in increased sorbent aromaticity and abundance in surface hydroxyl groups. BCd exhibited more developed meso- and microporosity and nearly triple the surface area of BC. Hydrophobic pesticides (metolachlor and carbamates) displayed comparably high (88–98%) and irreversible adsorption on both BCs, due to the pore filling, whereas the hydrophilic and ionic phenoxyacetic acids were weakly and reversibly sorbed on BC (7.3 and 39% of 2,4-D and MCPA dose introduced). Their removal from solution and hence retention on the deashed biochar was nearly total, due to the increased sorbent surface area and interactions of the agrochemicals with unclogged OH groups. The modified biochar has the potential to serve as a superabsorbent, immobilizing organic pollutant of diverse hydrophobicity from water and soil solution.

Abstract:Modification is widely used to enhance the adsorption performance of pristine hydrochar (HBC) and pyrochar (BC). However, comparisons between modified HBC and BC toward pollutant removal have rarely been reported. In this study, pristine HBC and BC derived from rice straw were first produced, and then citric acid (CA) was used as a modifier to synthesize CA-modified HBC (CAHBC) and CA-modified BC (CABC). Furthermore, the adsorption performance of biochars toward methylene blue (MB) was investigated. The results showed that BC exhibits relatively rough surfaces and contains more minerals (ash), whereas HBC has plentiful O-containing functional groups and fewer minerals. CA modification partially removed minerals from the surface of BC, which weakened the ion exchange, surface complexation, and n–π interaction, resulting in a lower adsorption ability toward MB. By contrast, CA produced more O-containing functional groups on the surface of HBC, which strengthened the hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction, thus increasing the adsorption capacity toward MB. The two-compartment model showed a good fit to the adsorption process of MB on CAHBC, and the isotherm data for MB adsorption by HBC and CAHBC are suitable for the Freundlich model. The highest adsorption amount of MB using CAHBC was 80.13 mg·g –1 , which was 27.66% higher than that for CABC. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis indicated that the carboxyl groups in the surface functional groups of CAHBC played a crucial role in the MB adsorption process. In addition, CAHBC showed a good performance for a wide range of pH values (4.0–10.0) and under the interference of coexisting ions, and also presented a recycling ability. Furthermore, the adsorption of MB on CAHBC biochar was a spontaneous, exothermic, degree-of-randomness-increasing process. Consequently, CA modification of HBC is a promising strategy and could be used for MB removal from aquatic environments.

Abstract:Nitrobenzene is a widespread contaminant in water. Biochar (BC) is a promising material for removing organic pollutants, but the adsorption capacity of pristine BC is low. Chemical modification is often used to improve the adsorption performance, but information on the sorption of nitrobenzene by modified BC is rare. In this study, BCs pyrolyzed at 300, 500, and 700 °C were modified by hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulfuric acid (H2SO4), sodium hydroxide (NaOH), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and nitric acid (HNO3), respectively. The properties, nitrobenzene sorption behaviors, and sorption mechanisms of different BCs were analyzed. The results showed that chemical modification decreased the sorption of nitrobenzene on BCs pyrolyzed at 300 °C, possibly due to the loss of the partition phase and the increase in polarity after modification. Regarding BCs pyrolyzed at 500 and 700 °C, the NaOH and HCl modifications significantly increased the sorption capacity by 19% and 60%, 18%, and 41%, respectively, possibly due to the increase in surface area, available pores, and aromaticity, while HNO3 modification decreased the sorption capacity by 41% and 31%. Two reasons were probably responsible for the decrease: one was the decrease in surface area after HNO3 modification due to the destruction of pore walls and the continuity of holes; the other was the strong repulsion between the nitro groups formed on the surface of BC and the nitro groups of nitrobenzene that drove nitrobenzene molecules away from the surface. A principal component-based comprehensive evaluation of the BC properties, which were significantly correlated with the sorption isotherm parameters, was used to evaluate the nitrobenzene sorption performance of the modified BC. Overall, BC pyrolyzed at 700 °C modified with NaOH or HCl were proposed as effective sorption materials for the removal of nitrobenzene in environment, which also provided a chemical modified method of biochar derived from agricultural waste.

Abstract:Chemical modification of biochars can improve their adsorption capacity relative to antibiotics, posing a serious threat to the environment. Therefore, this research is aimed at the treatment of sunflower husk biochar (BC) by vitamin C, hydrogen peroxide or silver nanoparticles and the impact of this procedure on the biochar porosity, surface chemistry, and ability to remove tetracycline (TC). During the study, BC was produced by pyrolysis of sunflower husks at 650 °C. All solids were characterized using potentiometric titration, nitrogen adsorption/desorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, etc. The experimental adsorption data was described by kinetics equations: pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, and particle internal diffusion (IPD) models as well as by isotherms of Langmuir, Langmuir-Freundlich, and Redlich-Peterson. The obtained results indicated that the biochar upgraded by vitamin C (BCV) had the highest ability to attract antibiotic molecules and, as a result, the TC adsorption on its surface was the largest. Furthermore, the TC desorption from this material was minimal. The measured TC adsorbed amounts for the modified BCs were as follows: 47.75% (7.47 mg/g) for BCV, 37.35% (8.41 mg/g)-for biochar treated by hydrogen peroxide (BCH), and 42.04% (9.55 mg/g) for biochar modified by silver nanoparticles (BCA). The lowest adsorption level was noted for non-modified biochar, i.e., 34.17% (6.83 mg/g). Based on the presented results it can be stated that the upgraded biochars had a good potential to improve the tetracycline removal from aqueous media, e.g., groundwater.

Abstract:Biochar, as a soil amendment, provided a very cost-effective, convenient route to dispose organic residues. In the present study, the impact of adding biochar on the sorption, leaching and dissipation processes of bisphenol A (BPA) and 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) in soil was investigated. The biochar derived from corn stalks at 500 °C for 1.5 h was characterized by a highly aromatic and microporous structure with various functional groups on the surface. In the batch sorption studies, the application of 4 wt% biochar to soil significantly increased the solid-water distribution coefficients by 263% for BPA and by 298% for EE2 at the pollutant equilibrium concentration of 0.01 mg L(-1). In the leaching experiment, after five leaching periods, soil amended with 1 wt%, 2 wt% and 4 wt% biochar reduced the cumulative amount by 19%, 28% and 53% for BPA, 42%, 58% and 77% for EE2 compared to the biochar-free soil. Interestingly, during the 90 d incubation experiment, BPA and EE2 dissipations were not significantly affected by the added biochar, while remarkable decreases of CaCl2 extractable BPA and EE2 were observed. The overall results highlighted the distinctive potential of this biochar in reducing the mobility of BPA and EE2 in soil, meanwhile without attenuating the degradation of the two pollutants.

Abstract:As an efficient and low-cost adsorbent, biochar has been widely used in the adsorption and removal of dyes, antibiotics and phenols from wastewater. Biochar is produced with gas and bio-oil during biomass pyrolysis and has many advantages as an adsorbent compared to activated carbon. In addition to sustainable soil remediation, it can also remove organic and inorganic contaminants from water/wastewater after physical/chemical modification. The adsorption capacity of biochar is often increased by acid/base and metal impregnation. This article first reviews the main physical and chemical properties of biochar, such as pH, specific surface area and porosity, surface functional groups and stability. Subsequently, three methods for preparing biochar by pyrolysis and the effects of raw materials, pyrolysis temperature, heating rate, and residence time on the properties of biochar are summarized. Due to the performance deficiencies of biochar, this article discusses the preparation of biochar composites by magnetic modification, acid modification, alkali modification, water vapor modification, nano metal oxide/hydroxide modification and heteroatom doping. The removal mechanisms of organic wastewater pollutants are summarized and analyzed, including pore filling, electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic interactions and π-π bonding. The factors affecting the removal effect mainly include the kinetic parameters, pH value of the solution, adsorption temperature, coexisting ions, biochar particle size, initial concentration and dose and reaction time. Finally, the removal effects and adsorption mechanisms of biochar for dyes, antibiotics and phenols from typical organic wastewater are discussed.

Abstract:Biochar enriched with metals has an increased potential for sorption of organic and inorganic pollutants. The aim of the research was to identify the possibility of using biochar composites produced on the basis of waste plant biomass and waste FFH (ferryferrohydrosol) containing iron atoms, after CO2 capture. The composites were produced in a one-stage or two-stage pyrolysis process. Their selected properties were determined as follows: pH, ash content, C, H, N, O, specific surface area, microstructure and the presence of surface functional groups. The produced biochar and composites had different properties resulting from the production method and the additive used. The results of experiments on the removal of methylene blue (MB) from solutions allowed us to rank the adsorbents used according to the maximum dye removal value achieved as follows: BC1 (94.99%), B (84.61%), BC2 (84.09%), BC3 (83.23%) and BC4 (83.23%). In terms of maximum amoxicillin removal efficiency, the ranking is as follows: BC1 (55.49%), BC3 (23.51%), BC2 (18.13%), B (13.50%) and BC4 (5.98%). The maximum efficiency of diclofenac removal was demonstrated by adsorbents BC1 (98.71), BC3 (87.08%), BC4 (74.20%), B (36.70%) and BC2 (30.40%). The most effective removal of metals Zn, Pb and Cd from the solution was demonstrated by BC1 and BC3 composites. The final concentration of the tested metals after sorption using these composites was less than 1% of the initial concentration. The highest increase in biomass on prepared substrates was recorded for the BC5 composite. It was higher by 90% and 54% (for doses of 30 g and 15 g, respectively) in relation to the biomass growth in the soil without additives. The BC1 composite can be used in pollutant sorption processes. However, BC5 has great potential as a soil additive in crop yield and plant growth.

Abstract:Abstract Biochar prepared by thermal decomposition of sewage sludge is a new adsorbent for sludge resource utilization and aquatic environmental treatment. In this study, sewage sludge was used as raw material for the preparation of pyrolysis sludge-based biochar. In addition, montmorillonite (Mt) and nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) were used to modify sludge-based biochar in different combinations to improve its adsorption capacity of nitrogen and phosphorus in water, and the best modification scheme was selected. The physicochemical properties of the biochar were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed that Mt and nZVI could improve the specific surface area and enrich the surface functional groups. The results on kinetics and equilibrium isotherms showed that sludge-based biochar modified by Mt coupled with nZVI (nZVI@MBC) had the best adsorption effect on NH4+ and PO43−. And its theoretical maximum saturation adsorption capacity for NH4+ and PO43− was 34.84 mg·g−1 and 294.12 mg·g−1, respectively. Our results were in the forefront of existing literature on modified sludge-based biochar. The adsorption mechanisms of nZVI@MBC for NH4+ and PO43− mainly include ligand exchange, electrostatic attraction and ionic bond. In addition, nZVI@MBC can also remove PO43− by chemical precipitation and coprecipitation of iron corrosion products.

Abstract:Biochar (BC) is a material that has many applications in agricultural and environmental activities. The aim of the study was to define the influence of BC produced in low-temperature pyrolysis from various organic waste materials, including one-month-old compost (OMOC), pine bark (PB), pine needle mulch (NM), pine cones (PC) and maple leaves (ML), on soil enzyme activity as well as its relation with organic matter properties. A 60-day incubation pot experiment was set up to investigate the influence of BC amendment on soil (S) characteristics. After incubation, we investigated the activity of soil enzymes, the content of available phosphorus (AP), potassium (AK) and magnesium (AMg), total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), dissolved organic matter (DOM) and its fractional composition (content and share of carbon and nitrogen of humic (CHAs, NHAs) and fulvic (CFAs, NFAs) acids and humin fractions). The effect of the amended biochars differed depending on the feedstock material. In general, the use of biochar enriched the soil with AP, AK and AMg increased the soil carbon stock, increased the intensity of nitrogen transformation and influenced the soil enzyme activity. OMOC and ML biochars significantly increased soil fertility, which was expressed by the high value of the CHA/CFA ratio.

Abstract:Biochar improves soil physical, chemical and biological properties. However, there is a very limited number of studies comparing the effect of various doses of biochar and wheat straw with nutrients on microbiocenotic composition of soil and their connection with selected biochemical and chemical parameters of soil. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the addition to the soil of wheat straw (WS) and wheat straw biochar (WSB) (300 °C) at 0.2%, 0.5%, 1%, and 2% doses and the addition of nutrients (MF) on microbial community composition (bacteria, fungi, actinobacteria, Azotobacter spp., ammonifiers, nitrifiers, denitrifiers, C. pasteurianum), dehydrogenase activity index, carbon and nitrogen fractions contents and the content of water soluble Cu, Cd, Zn, and Pb. It was demonstrated that coapplication of WS and WSB with MF at 1% and 2% doses increased carbon and nitrogen contents in soil and, in particular, their water soluble fractions (DOC and DON). The synergistic effect of biochar and MF contributed to the increase in the population of soil microorganisms. Dehydrogenase activity index in treatments with the addition of WS, WSB and MF was 1.6–4 times higher compared to the control. The content of heavy metals significantly (p ≤ 0.05) affected dehydrogenase activity and the number of nitrifiers and ammonifiers. It was demonstrated that the content of C and N measured for soil microbial biomass in treatments amended with biochar and MF was much greater than in control treatment and MF. However, our studies suggest that the microorganisms' response to the addition of biochar with nutrients increased the number and intensified the activity of soil microorganisms.

Abstract:The effect of biochars (BCs) chemical modifications on the content of various contaminants is poorly studied and understood, despite the fact that such results would be important in terms of estimating the safety of BCs application. The aim of this study was to evaluate the content of different types of contaminants - heavy metals (HMs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (solvent extractable - C tot and freely dissolved - C free PAHs) and environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) in post-pyrolytic chemically modified (HNO 3 , KOH and H 2 O 2 ) BCs produced under diverse conditions (temperature and carrier gas) and from various feedstocks (willow, rice husk, sewage sludge, oil seed rape straw, wheat straw). The physio-chemical properties of BCs were determined (such as morphology, elemental composition and chemical state, and crystalline structure) and correlated with contaminants content. Regardless of the BCs type, acid modification reduced HMs and C tot PAHs the most effectively but simultaneously increased C free PAHs and EPFRs content (compared to pristine BCs). Changes in contaminant content after H 2 O 2 and alkali treatment were more varied and strictly related to the physio-chemical properties of BCs (such as porosity, DOC, and polarity). H 2 O 2 treatment reduced C tot and C free PAHs content but was less effective than acid modification. In contrast, KOH treatment significantly increased the C tot in most BCs, which depends mainly on porosity and DOC changes. Also, the reduction in HMs content and increase in EPFR after alkali and H 2 O 2 treatment were less substantial and more differentiated by BC origin than after acid modification.

Abstract:Corn straw is rich in resources, and the preparation of biochar as the constructed wetland (CW) substrate is an effective measure to realize high-value resource utilization. The objective of this paper was to improve the treatment effect of CW on city tail water, the freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) modification and chemical modification (KMnO4, NaOH and H2SO4) of straw biochar and the utilization of modified straw biochar in CW were studied. The modification characteristics of straw biochar were discussed through scanning electron microscope, element determination, pore structure determination, X-ray diffraction analysis, Fourier transform infrared reflection analysis, CO2 adsorption and desorption experiment and application experiment of CW (no plants and plants). The results show that under the influence of strong oxidation of KMnO4, the combination of KMnO4 and FTCs modification is easy to cause the destruction of biochar structure, and the content of carbon element is reduced. Except for the combined modification of NaOH and FTCs, other composite modifications have little effect on the crystal structure and functional groups of straw biochar. The adsorption capacity of CO2 by FTCs modified biochar increased by 20.4%, and the adsorption capacity of CO2 by H2SO4 and FTCs composite modified biochar increased by 23.0%. The effect of H2SO4 modification of straw biochar based on FTCs modification is obviously better than that of NaOH and KMnO4. The research results are of great significance to improve the material structure of biochar and the purification effect of CW on city tail water.

Abstract:The development of manganese (Mn) oxides (MnOx) modified biochar (MnOBC) for the removal of pollutants from water has received significant attention. However, a comprehensive review focusing on the use of MnOBC for the removal of organic and inorganic pollutants from water is missing. Therefore, the preparation and characterization of MnOBC, and its capacity for the removal of inorganic (e.g., toxic elements) and organic (e.g., antibiotics and dyes) from water have been discussed in relation to feedstock properties, pyrolysis temperature, modification ratio, and environmental conditions here. The removal mechanisms of pollutants by MnOBC and the fate of the sorbed pollutants onto MnOBC have been reviewed. The impregnation of biochar with MnOx improved its surface morphology, functional group modification, and elemental composition, and thus increased its sorption capacity. This review establishes a comprehensive understanding of synthesizing and using MnOBC as an effective biosorbent for remediation of contaminated aqueous environments.

Abstract:The chitosan-modified biochars BC-CS 1-1, BC-CS 2-1 and BC-CS 4-1 were subjected to the synthetic application of biochar from agriculture waste and chitosan for the adsorption of Cu(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), Co(II) and Pb(II) ions from aqueous media. The results displayed a heterogeneous, well-developed surface. Additionally, the surface functional groups carboxyl, hydroxyl and phenol, determining the sorption mechanism and confirming the thermal stability of the materials, were present. The sorption evaluation was carried out as a function of the sorbent dose, pH, phase contact time, initial concentration of the solution and temperature. The maximum value of qt for Pb(II)-BC-CS 4-1, 32.23 mg/g (C0 200 mg/L, mass 0.1 g, pH 5, 360 min), was identified. Nitric acid was applied for the sorbent regeneration with a yield of 99.13% for Pb(II)-BC-CS 2-1. The produced sorbents can be used for the decontamination of water by means of the cost-effective and high-performance method.
