Abstract:Antibiotic pollution as a hot topic of global concern is greatly sought after due to the adverse effect on ecosystems and human health stemming from the excessive use and deficient management. Achieving detection of antibiotics residues in water is extremely crucial but remains challenging. Herein, four metal-organic frameworks 1-4 with different luminescent behaviors were demonstrated by variation of the systematic rigidity and assemble form. To fabricate the solid dual-emission probe, the gust dye 4-(4-diethylaminostyryl)-1-methylpyridinium (DEASM) is successfully encapsulated into a non-porous flexible MOF 4 ascribed to the dynamic breathing effect. The resulting composite displays the dual-emission behavior with the color linearly tuned from green to red and ratiometric luminescent response to pH with controllable sensitivity, supported by dimensionality dependent energy transfer. Furthermore, 4 superset of DEASM exhibits sensitive and selective sensing performances towards nitrofurazone and could be integrated into a logic operation. Thus, our study may bring new perspective for the design of dye encapsulated MOF dual-emission ratiometric sensor to monitor antibiotic in water.
Paper-based device for the selective determination of doxycycline antibiotic based on the turn-on fluorescence of bovine serum albumin–coated copper nanoclusters

Abstract:An enhanced ratiometric fluorescence sensor was built for on-site visual detection of doxycycline (DOX) through the interaction with bovine serum albumin on the surface of red emissive copper nanoclusters. Upon the addition of weakly fluorescent DOX, the red fluorescence from copper nanoclusters gradually decreased through the inner-filter effect (IFE), while a green fluorescence appears and significantly increases, forming an interesting fluorescent isosbestic point, which was assigned to DOX due to sensitization effect of bovine serum albumin. On the basis of this ratiometric fluorescence, the system possessed good limit of detection (LOD) of 45 nM and excellent selectivity for DOX over other tetracyclines. Based on these findings, a paper-based sensor has been fabricated for distinct visual detection of trace DOX and combined with smartphone color recognizer for quantitative detection of DOX (LOD = 83 nM). This method shows broad application prospects in environmental monitoring and food safety.

Abstract:Doxycycline (DOX) has been used extensively in the control of animal diseases, which leads to its large-scale accumulation in water and causes serious pollution problems. In this study, a BODIPY-based fluorescent probe named DOX-BOD was synthesized by a one-pot method. The qualitative and quantitative detection of DOX was achieved by the specific response effect of DOX-BOD on DOX. DOX-BOD showed excellent performance and its fluorescence intensity decreased with the increase in DOX concentration. Besides, the detection limit was as low as 0.91 mu M. The DOX detection method based on BODIPY fluorescent probe has good reproducibility and stability, and can be used for rapid and high-sensitivity detection of DOX residues in the water environment, which is of great significance for environmental monitoring.

Abstract:Exploring a rapid, sensitive, low-cost, in-situ intelligent monitoring multi-target fluorescence detection platform is important for food safety and environmental monitoring. A dual-mode ratiometric fluorescence sensing system integrated with a smartphone based on a luminescent metal-organic framework (NH 2 -MIL-53) and CdTe/Eu was developed for visual, in-situ analysis of Fe 3+ and doxycycline (DOX) in this paper. Interestingly, with increasing Fe 3+ concentration, the fluorescence sensing system exhibits dual-emission with CdTe QDs at 540 nM as the response signal and NH 2 -MIL-53 at 438 nm as the reference signal, resulting in a significant color shift of fluorescence color from blue-green to blue, with a linear range of 5- 1550 nM and a detection limit of 1.08 nM. In the presence of DOX, the blue fluorescence of NH 2 -MIL-53 and the green fluorescence of CdTe QDs were quenched respectively by the internal filtering effect and the photoelectron transfer effect. While DOX enhances the red fluorescence of Eu 3+ by the antenna effect, forming a triple-emission fluorescence sensor. The visual color of this fluorescent sensor shifted from blue green to grey to pink-white to pink to fuchsia to red as the DOX concentration increased with a detection limit of 0.11 nM. Furthermore, the developed intelligent sensing platform achieved real-time in-situ detection of Fe 3+ and DOX with detection limit of 1.47 nM and 6.43 nM, respectively. The platform was applied to detection actual samples with satisfactory results, which proved a promising application for real-time on-site food safety monitoring and human health monitoring.

Abstract:Exploring high-performance fluorescence strategies for onsite monitoring of oxytetracycline (OTC) is of great significance for protecting human health. Herein, an innovative ratiometric fluorescence biomimetic sensor featured with high sensitivity and selectivity was constructed based on magnesium and nitrogen co-doped carbon dots embedded europium metal–organic framework and incorporating molecularly imprinted polymer (Mg,N-CDs/Eu-MOFs@MIP). In this protocol, MIP layer functioning as recognition units endowed Mg,N-CDs/Eu-MOFs@MIP with satisfactory binding efficiency and anti-interference ability. Mg,N-CDs/Eu-MOFs as both supporter and signal tag enabled the sensor to not only demonstrate a fast fluorescence response, but also yield reverse response signals depending on the synergistic effect of inner filter effect (IFE) and antenna effect (AE), achieving signal amplification. Benefiting from the efficient dual-channel strategy, Mg,N-CDs/Eu-MOFs@MIP exhibited a wide linear range (0.02–50 μg mL−1) with a sensitive detection limit (6.6 ng mL−1) and a marked color transformation (blue-to-red), which was highly desirable for monitoring of oxytetracycline. Simultaneously, aiming at attaining precise onsite analysis, a portable intelligent sensing platform was devised by integrating Mg,N-CDs/Eu-MOFs@MIP and a smartphone-assisted device. The smartphone with an installed color recognizer application as signal reader and analyzer realized oxytetracycline visual sensing by capturing and digitizing fluorescence images. More significantly, the portable platform was successfully applied to the onsite monitoring of OTC in water samples and milk samples with acceptable results. Accordingly, the as-developed platform demonstrated low-cost, portability, easy implementation, desirable specificity and sensitivity, presenting great potential for point-of-care testing.

Abstract:Doxycycline (DOX), a typical tetracycline antibiotic, is widely used because of its excellent antibacterial activity. To develop effective method for DOX has attracted much more attention. Herein, a new detection technology integrating magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) based on thermosensitive magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (T-MMIPs) and fluorescence spectrometry based on carbon dots (CDs) was established. Thermosensitive magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (T-MMIPs) was designed for selective enrichment of trace DOX. The synthesized T-MMIPs showed excellent selectivity for DOX. The adsorption performance of T-MMIPs varied with temperature in different solvents, which could achieve the enrichment and rapid desorption of DOX. In addition, the synthesized CDs had stable fluorescent property and better water-solubility, and the fluorescence of CDs was significantly quenched by DOX due to the internal filtration effect (IFE). Under the optimized conditions, the method resulted in good linearity over the range from 0.5 to 30 μg L −1 , and the limit of detection was 0.2 μg L −1 . The constructed detection technology was validated with real water samples, and excellent spiked recoveries from 92.5 % to 105.2 % were achieved. These data clearly indicated that the proposed technology was rapid, highly selective, environmentally friendly, and possessed significant potential application and development prospects.

Abstract:The widespread presence of tetracyclines in the environment has raised concerns about the potential risks to ecosystems and human health. The ratiometric fluorescence sensor for detecting tetracyclines was developed using europium-doped carbon dots (Eu-CDs) as probes under alkaline conditions. The sensing mechanism of sensor for tetracyclines was considered as inner filter effect (IFE), antenna effect (AE), and self-quenching effect (SQE). The sensor had a wide linear detection range than the reported europium ions-based tetracyclines sensors. The linear detection ranges of oxytetracycline (OTC), tetracycline (TC), doxycycline (DC) and chlorotetracycline (CTC) were respectively 0.00–603.75 μM, 0.00–623.82 μM, 0.00–594.61 μM and 0.00–601.54 μM, and the corresponding detection limits were respectively 9.50 nM, 15.80 nM, 10.4 nM and 90.3 nM. The smartphone with RGB Color Picker was further employed to analyze the concentration of tetracyclines, which provided a new method for visual tetracyclines detection. The application of Eu-CDs test paper was also explored, and the results showed that the Eu-CDs test paper has great potential application in the visual detection of tetracyclines. In addition, the accuracy of the established tetracyclines sensor was compared with that of the China national standard method by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and the results showed that the established method in this work has similar accuracy to the China national standard method. The sensor has been employed to detect tetracyclines in the actual samples with satisfactory results, which indicated that this method has promising applications in the real-time monitoring tetracyclines of food and environment.

Abstract:The molecular imprinting ratiometric fluorescence sensor has exhibited great potential in biological and environmental detection because of the combination between the excellent selectivity of molecular imprinting technique and outstanding robustness of ratiometric measurement methods On this basis, two kinds of different well-resolved wavelengths and high-fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) were prepared by various solvent extraction using osmanthus fragrans leaves as carbon source. Then the ratiometric fluorescence sensor (MIPs@rCDs/bCDs@SiO2) has been constructed by the obtained CDs which the red-emission CDs (rCDs) were used to responsive signal and the blue-emission CDs (bCDs) was served as reference signal and applied for highly selective and excellent sensitive detection of tetracycline (TC). Under optimum conditions, the ratiometric fluorescence MIPs@rCDs/bCDs@SiO2 sensor has also exhibited lower detection limit of 1.19 nM and the linear range of 0-50 nM. The ratiometric fluorescence sensor was further successfully employed to the determination of TC in water samples gathered from local river water and tap water, indicating its great worth toward water sample analysis in complicated environments. Abstract:A novel smartphone-assisted fluorescent sensor based on europium/zirconium metal-organic framework (Eu0.5/Zr0.5-MOF) was developed for the fast and sensitive determination of doxycycline (DOX) and L-arginine (Arg). After the addition of DOX, the fluorescence of Eu0.5/Zr0.5-MOF was quenched owing to the inner filter effect (IFE). When Arg was introduced into the Eu0.5/Zr0.5-MOF@DOX complex system, the fluorescence was recovered because the interaction between Arg and Eu0.5/Zr0.5-MOF@DOX weakened the IFE. Moreover, the Eu0.5/Zr0.5-MOF produced continuous fluorescence color changes for the visual measurement of DOX and Arg. The fluorescent probe for DOX and Arg offered broad linear ranges of 0.05-80 and 0.1-60 μg/mL, respectively, with detection limits as low as 2.07 and 67.5 ng/mL. The proposed method was successfully applied to monitor DOX in eggs and Arg in human serum. This work provides a powerful platform for the real-time and visual analysis of DOX and Arg in food and biological samples.

Abstract:AbstractA novel colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescence sensor has been established based on boron carbon oxynitride quantum dots (BCNO QDs) and Ca2+ for the detection of doxycycline (DOX). BCNO QDs were synthesized by microwave-assisted method with boric acid and ethylenediamine. The fluorescence of BCNO QDs at 425 nm was quenched due to the electrostatic interaction and inner filter effect with doxycycline. Meanwhile, doxycycline was combined with Ca2+ to form a fluorescence complex, which generated a new fluorescence peak at 520 nm. The fluorescence intensity ratio (F520/F425) has a good linear relationship with doxycycline concentration, and the detection limit is 25 nM. Moreover, the fluorescence of the reaction solution showed a concentration-dependent visual color change from blue to green. In order to facilitate further application, a portable fluorescent test paper which is easy to store was prepared. The RGB values of the reaction solution and corresponding test paper were identified by smartphone, and the visual detection of doxycycline was performed by digital image colorimetric analysis. The application of smartphone and fluorescent test paper can effectively shorten the detection time and simplified the operation, providing an effective scheme for quantitative detection of doxycycline in actual samples. Overall, this work provides a method for the detection of doxycycline and shows that the BCNO QDs have great potential application in food safety.Graphical abstract

Abstract:The residue of doxycycline in food can cause harm to human. Therefore, the detection of doxycycline residue is necessary. Herein, a ratiometric fluorescent probe was designed based on sulfur quantum dots (S dots) and Ca2+. Due to static quenching and inter filter effect between doxycycline and S dots, doxycycline quenched fluorescence of S dots at 450 nm. Meanwhile, doxycycline and Ca2+ formed fluorescent complex through coordination to produce new peak at 520 nm. The ratio of fluorescence intensity (F520/F450) and doxycycline concentration showed good linear relationship with detection limit of 0.19 μM. The fluorescence color of S dots/Ca2+ changed from blue to light green with increasing doxycycline concentration, which was applied for visual semi-quantitative detection of doxycycline. Moreover, the method was used for detecting doxycycline in milk and fish samples with recoveries in the range of 91%-110%. The method showed good application potential in detection of doxycycline in food samples.
Dual-excitation carbon dots-based lateral flow visual sensing device for ratiometric determination and discrimination of tetracyclines in food

Abstract:Excessive releasing of tetracyclines in the nature has constituted a major threat to ecosystem. Therefore, it is crucial to develop an accurate and convenient on-site analysis device for tetracyclines. Herein, we construct a neoteric dual-excitation carbon dots (DE-CDs) through microwave radiation and establish an excitation-based ratiometric approach for quantitative tetracyclines determination. The ratio of different excitation intensities under the same emission wavelength changes linearly in response to tetracyclines concentration. As a proof of feasibility, we choose doxycycline (DOX) as the analysis model. It shows a low detection limit (LOD) of 61 nM in a wide concentration range of 0.061–80 μM, suggesting that this sensor is conducive to application potential in tetracyclines determination of food products. Moreover, considering the differentiated overlap between tetracyclines absorbance and DE-CDs excitations, the discrimination of tetracyclines is realized in the form of mixtures. Significantly, combining with the DE-CDs, RGB (Red, Green and Blue) analysis and 3D printing technologies, we construct a miniaturized visual sensing device with low LOD and achieve the discrimination of TCs based on RGB variations, showing a great opportunity for industrial production of pollutant monitoring sensors in resource-constrained areas.

Abstract:As widely used antibiotics, tetracycline residues exist in food and environmental media, which pose certain hidden dangers and negative effects on public health. Therefore, the sensing and discrimination of tetracycline analogs (TCs) have great significance for improving food safety and preventing environmental pollution. Herein, a 7-hydroxycoumarin-3-carboxylic acid-embedded Eu-MOF (HC@Eu-MOF) material was constructed and then developed for the detection of TCs. Upon addition of TCs, the synthesized sensor displays opposite fluorescence changes at two different wavelengths due to the simultaneous presence of the inner filter effect (IFE) and the antenna effect (AE), and achieves a stable ratio signal response within 90 s. In addition, six important tetracycline analogs, including chlortetracycline (CTC), oxytetracycline (OTC), tetracycline (TC), metacycline (MC), doxycycline (DC) and demeclocycline (DMC) can be discriminated with 100 % accuracy through the principal component analysis even in extremely complicated mixtures. Further, a smartphone-assisted portable device was applied for visual sensing of TCs. The as-developed platform possessed the characteristics of simple synthesis, fast response, high sensitivity, and high stability, which further lays a further foundation for the on-site visual detection and discrimination of TCs in real samples.

Abstract:Fluorescence analysis using fluorescent probe as a tool is one of the most important technical methods in the field of substance detection, but fluorescent probes have problems such as poor biocompatibility and low stability. Here, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) were used to encapsulate the small molecule fluorescent probe DOX-BOD to construct the green-emitting fluorescent platform DOX-BOD@zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8). The experiments show that the designed DOX-BOD@ZIF-8 has a significant fluorescence response to DOX without interference from other possible substances, with a low detection limit of 2.72 μM. In addition, DOX-BOD@ZIF-8 shows superior pH stability and photostability compared to DOX-BOD. Finally, the nanocomposite DOX-BOD@ZIF-8 was shown to be applicable for DOX detection in lake water. With the development of this type of materialized probe, there will be a significant boost to the detection and protection of the environment.

Abstract:A fluorometric assay is described for doxycycline detection. It is based on the use of nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (NCQDs) coated with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). The NCQDs were prepared by a one-step hydrothermal reaction using citric acid and ethylenediamine (EDA) as the starting materials. Afterwards, the NCQDs were incorporated into the polymer that was molecularly imprinted with doxycycline. It is found that doxycycline quenches the fluorescence of the NCQDs, and that the functional groups on the surface of NCQDs play an important role in terms of quenching efficiency. A larger fraction of carboxyl groups presented on the surface of NCQDs leads to a higher quenching efficiency due to the enhanced electron transfer from NCQD to doxycycline. The NCQDs@MIP composite can specifically and rapidly recognize doxycycline. Fluorescence drops linearly in the 5 to 50 μM doxycycline concentration range, and the limit of detection is 87 nM. This method was successfully applied to the determination of doxycycline in spiked pig serum where it gave recovery rates of >94%.Graphical abstractSchematic illustration for fabricating a fluorescent sensor based on nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (NCQDs) and molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). Abstract:Tetracyclines residues, particularly oxytetracycline (OTC) and tetracycline (TC), have raised extensive concern because of their serious adverse effects on human health. Herein, a dual-response fluorescent probe based on nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) and Eu3+ hybrid (N-CDs-Eu3+) was developed to selectively determine OTC and TC. The N-CDs act as ancillary ligands of Eu3+ and recognition units of OTC/TC, while the Eu3+ ions chelated with N-CDs can also specifically recognize OTC/TC. Upon inclusion of OTC/TC, an enhancement in Eu3+ emission occurs due to the energy transfer from OTC/TC to Eu3+ and the efficient elimination of quenching effect caused by H2O molecule, which is attributed to the incorporation of N-CDs; while the blue fluorescence emitted by the N-CDs decreases under the inner filter effect and static quenching effect caused by OTC/TC. Based on the double and reverse response signals, the ratiometric detection of OTC and TC in the range of 0.1-45 μΜ and 0.1-30 μΜ is achieved with a detection limit of 0.017 and 0.041 μM, respectively. In addition, the noticeable variation in fluorescence color of the probe is integrated with a smartphone-assisted analysis device for the rapid on-site quantitative assay of OTC, where the detection limit is 0.15 μΜ. The results show that this probe performs with excellent specificity and anti-interference for both OTC and TC, and satisfactory detection results are obtained in lake water, milk, and honey samples, thereby confirming that the probe exhibits promising application in food safety and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:The large-scale production and abuse of antibiotics cause environmental pollution, threaten human health, and destroy the ecological balance. Efficient detection of these pollutants has emerged as a prominent topic in current research. In this study, we developed a novel material called UiO-67-NCDs by combining UiO-67 with nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs) for sensing trace amounts of tetracycline (TC) in water. The NCDs were successfully introduced onto UiO-67 by the post-synthesis modification, resulting in a strong blue fluorescence at 445 nm. Thanks to the hydrogen bonding, π-π interactions and the internal filter effect (IFE) between UiO-67 and NCDs, UiO-67-NCDs was capable for TC sensing, exhibiting fluorescence quenching in 10 s with a limit of detection (LOD) of 32.9 nM (0–38 μM). The visual detection capabilities, high sensitivity, rapid detection time, and simplicity of the fluorescent probe make it a promising candidate for antibiotic detection in aqueous environments. This will further stimulate the interest of researchers in the in-depth study of MOFs and quantum dots and their applications in sensing.

Abstract:In this work, dual-responsive luminescent Her@Zn-Bim hybrids are developed by herniarin (Her) dye encapsulation engineering within a layered host MOF (Zn-Bim). The pore confinement effect of the Zn-Bim host effectively isolates the guest dye molecules, therefore affording bright blue dye emission for Her@Zn-Bim hybrids. Upon exposure to tetracycline antibiotics (TCs), the hybrid undergoes a significant quenching of the blue emission, concurrent with the appearance of a distinct green emission. This dual-emission response is very fast and sensitive, facilitating real-time ratiometric detection of TCs with a low limit of detection of 7.81 nM. Notably, the ratiometric luminescence response manifests as a readily observable blue-to-green color switching, enabling straightforward and colorimetric visualization of TCs. Visual and semiquantitative monitoring of TCs is achieved using a readily available smartphone installed with a color-analysis app. Furthermore, in conjunction with principal component analysis, the Her@Zn-Bim hybrids demonstrate efficient discrimination of four TCs with high structural and chemical similarities, even in complex mixture systems. The mechanisms underlying the luminescent responses of the hybrids towards TCs are carefully elucidated. These hybrid sensors, featuring high sensitivity, fast response, colorimetric visualization, and precise discrimination capability, hold promising potential for practical applications in sensing TCs.

Abstract:Concerns about environmental and food contamination caused by chlortetracycline (CTC) residues have prompted people to explore efficient and convenient CTC monitoring platforms. However, the reported fluorescent probes generally fail to selectively detect CTC due to the structural similarity of tetracycline antibiotics. Herein, an intrinsic dual-emission carbon dots (D-CDs) ratiometric fluorescence sensor was prepared for highly sensitive and selective determination of CTC over other tetracyclines by one-step synthesis. The sensor exhibited a significant fluorescence enhancement at 425 nm after introducing CTC. The fluorescence "turn on" of the sensing system is due to aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomenon formed by hydrogen bonds and π conjugation promoting the specific recognition of CTC by D-CDs. The linear detection varied from 0.98 to 143.67 ng mL −1 with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 1.29 ng mL −1 ( R 2 = 0.998), which was lower than most reported in the literature. The D-CDs sensor was applied to detect CTC in spiked milk, blocked normal human serum, and fish samples with recoveries of 95.5–104.2% and relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 2.6%. Particularly, D-CDs based test papers with a smartphone were prepared for portable and visual detection of CTC by analyzing the various color changes of RGB of fluorescence color, with an LOD of 7.18 ng mL −1 ( R 2 = 0.9909). The fluorescence sensor designed in this work could be used as a rapid tool with high performance and selectivity for monitoring control in foods.

Abstract:The massive residues of tetracycline (TC) have caused serious harm to the human body and the environment, so it is urgent to explore a portable, on-site, sensitive and selective method to detect TC. In this study, a dual response ratiometric fluorescent probe (S,O-C 3 N 4 QDs-CitNa-Eu 3+ ) for detecting TC was constructed by mixing sodium citrate (CitNa), europium ion (Eu 3+ ) and sulfur and oxygen co-doped graphite phase carbon nitride quantum dots (S,O-C 3 N 4 QDs) solution in a specific proportion. The S,O-C 3 N 4 QDs was initially synthesized by using citric acid and thiourea as the precursors via a hydrothermal route. The blue fluorescence of S,O-C 3 N 4 QDs ( λ em = 445 nm) was decreased while the red fluorescence of Eu 3+ was increased ( λ em = 620 nm) own to the synergistic effect of internal filter effect, static quenching and antenna effect when TC was added to the mixed system containing CitNa and Eu 3+ . As a result, the ultra-sensitive detection of TC was realized from 0.25 to 120 μM with a detection limit of 1.3 nM. An obvious color change of the solution from blue to purple to red with continuous adding TC was observed such that the semi-quantitative detection of TC can be realized. Moreover, a smartphone APP monitoring platform based on test paper was constructed by using color scanning application, demonstrating that the ratiometric fluorescent probe constructed in this work has great potential in medical and environmental fields.
