Abstract:Urbanization has become an irreversible global phenomenon, with a majority of the world's population residing in cities. As urban areas expand, the significance of incorporating green spaces into these landscapes is paramount for environmental health. This study provides a concise overview of a global review that explores the multifaceted impact of urban green spaces on sustainability, well-being, and ecological balance. Urban green spaces play a crucial role in biodiversity preservation, acting as vital habitats for diverse plant and animal species. These spaces contribute to the maintenance of urban ecosystems, fostering ecological balance in densely populated areas. The presence of varied flora and fauna supports environmental health by enhancing biodiversity and promoting a more sustainable urban environment. One of the significant contributions of urban green spaces is their role in improving air quality. Through the natural process of photosynthesis, plants absorb pollutants and release oxygen, serving as an effective filtration system. Trees, in particular, act as natural air purifiers, reducing the concentration of airborne particles and pollutants. This contributes to enhanced air quality, mitigating the adverse effects of urban pollution on environmental health. Urban green spaces also play a pivotal role in temperature regulation, combating the phenomenon of urban heat islands. By providing shade and reducing surface temperatures, greenery helps create a cooler and more comfortable urban living environment. This temperature regulation not only contributes to the well-being of residents but also addresses the challenges posed by rising temperatures in urban areas. Beyond environmental considerations, access to urban green spaces has profound effects on the mental and physical well-being of urban dwellers. These spaces serve as outlets for recreation, exercise, and relaxation, contributing to stress reduction and improved mental health. Additionally, urban green spaces act as hubs for social interaction and community engagement, fostering a sense of belonging and strengthening social cohesion. Abstract:BACKGROUND: Urban development projects can be costly and have health impacts. An evidence-based approach to urban planning is therefore essential. However, the evidence for physical and non-physical health benefits of urban green space is unclear.METHODS: A literature search of academic and grey literature was conducted for studies and reviews of the health effects of green space. Articles found were appraised for their relevance, critically reviewed and graded accordingly. Their findings were then thematically categorized.RESULTS: There is weak evidence for the links between physical, mental health and well-being, and urban green space. Environmental factors such as the quality and accessibility of green space affects its use for physical activity. User determinants, such as age, gender, ethnicity and the perception of safety, are also important. However, many studies were limited by poor study design, failure to exclude confounding, bias or reverse causality and weak statistical associations.CONCLUSION: Most studies reported findings that generally supported the view that green space have a beneficial health effect. Establishing a causal relationship is difficult, as the relationship is complex. Simplistic urban interventions may therefore fail to address the underlying determinants of urban health that are not remediable by landscape redesign.

Abstract:Urban green spaces as an important contributor can be a significant part of sustainable development. Developments of urban green spaces need to consider interdisciplinary and integrative approaches such as economic, political, social, cultural, management and planning aspects to improve existing urban green spaces’ facilities and services, and to optimize urban green space policies [1]. The definition of urban green spaces which is agreed on by ecologists, economists, social scientists and planners is public and private open spaces in urban areas, primarily covered by vegetation, which are directly (e.g. active or passive recreation) or indirectly (e.g. positive influence on the urban environment) available for the users [2]. Based on the studies of different cities, different researchers provide some guidelines to evaluate the nature of green spaces. Firstly, one of the main factors in determining the nature of green spaces is their quantity in the city [3]. Secondly, existing qualities like activities and experiences, and perceived benefits to the users determine the utilization of green spaces [4]. Thirdly, the functionality of those green spaces is equally influenced by the location and distribution (accessibility) in the whole city [4-6].

Abstract:As urban problems and the COVID-19 pandemic worsen, public health issues are taken seriously. As an important part of building environment, urban green space has been concerned about its health. The paper of 2035 in Web of Science Core database is taken as the research object, and CiteSpace visualization software is used for research and analysis to clarify the status quo of urban green space and health (UGSH) field. The research shows that the research object has gradually expanded from a single green space to cities, countries and the world. The research focuses on the relationship between people and green space, and discusses the comprehensive benefits of green space. Research methods from early investigation and evaluation, simulation experiment to qualitative and quantitative cross analysis, formed a relatively perfect subjective and objective research paradigm. In addition, the research content mainly focuses on the urban ecosystem, mental health and physical health. In a review of the existing research, the urban green space to promote public health, the improvement of human welfare puts forward three Suggestions: 1) in the urban planning, the city as a comprehensive social ecosystem, the urban green space planning and design should pay attention to provide ecosystem services and create a social network, in order to improve the social and environmental justice; 2) Urban planning should consider residents' preferences for different green Spaces to create a more pleasant living environment; 3) Improve the coverage of urban green infrastructure and expand the ecological network.

Abstract:Cities are the regions which have the most intense interaction among social,economy,and environment.Along with more and more urban environmental problems,people pay more and more attentions to the urban sustainable development.Critical natural capital has especial characters such as essentiality,irreplaceability,and irreversibility,which play important roles in the sustainable developmental system.So identifying urban critical natural capital is the precondition of achieving urban sustainable development.Based on an overview of former researches,we find that urban green space has many essential ecological functions such as food supplying,wood and fiber provisioning,air purifying,noise abating,microclimate regulating,nutrient cycling,biodiversity maintaining,and some social-cultural services,which are classified into four groups(source function,sink function,life support function,human health and welfare function).The analysis of ecosystem service and characters of urban green space identifies that urban green space is an important natural capital to urban sustainable development.Finally,some operable suggestions are made to ecosystem service conservation and enhancing of green space for urban sustainable development.

Abstract:In the context of urban land-use growth and the consequent impacts on the environment, green spaces provide ecosystem services for human health. The ecosystem services concept synthesises human–environmental interactions through a series of combined components of biodiversity and abiotic elements, linking ecological processes and functions. The concept of green infrastructure (GI) in the urban context emphasises the quality and quantity of urban and peri-urban green spaces and natural areas. In dense urban contexts, the applications of GI are limited and not applied to the potential urban spaces such as roofs and gardens. Often, roofs are characterised by impermeable paved surfaces with negative effects on human well-being, whereas garden designs do not consider social needs and environmental interactions. The role of urban stressors or the urban context as a driving force or pressure of urban green space is not always well understood and employed in the planning of green spaces. This is partly due to a knowledge gap between different science disciplines that operate on different scales, from single processes of the plants (which focus on plant responses to environmental stresses affecting human well-being) to urban ecosystems (which focus on the biodiversity and urban space planning–human well-being relationship). This can create a paradox, as green spaces that are not adequately designed might not produce the expected effects. In this paper, an overview of benefits and limitations of applying the ecosystem services approach when designing green spaces is presented. The focus is on the main urban ecosystem services provided by green roofs and community gardens such as GI that can represent strategies to provide ecological and social multifunctionality to waterproofed surfaces connected to the buildings and low-exploited gardens being the main areas that affect dense urban settlements, and thus, increasing the ecosystem services in the urban environment, such as reducing the Urban Heat Island, as well as flooding events. Specifically, the paper highlights (i) feedback between ecological processes and functions that support ecosystem services, (ii) urban environmental stresses in relation to disservices that these can create for human well-being and (iii) key issues that should be considered in the planning and design of urban ecosystem services. Such a new vision of urban ecosystem services highlights the need to look at GI as an active part of the urban space design in the built environment.

Abstract:As populations become increasingly urbanised, the preservation of urban green space becomes paramount. Despite the potential from cross-sectional evidence, we know little about how to design new, or improve or promote existing, urban green space for environmental, health and well-being benefits. This chapter highlights aspects to be considered when designing and evaluating urban green space interventions that aim to maximize environmental, social and health benefits, and address equity issues. Based on a review of international research evidence and a compilation of European case studies, the chapter addresses the variety of green space intervention approaches and their related impacts. There was strong evidence to support park-based and greenway/trail interventions employing a dual-approach (i.e. a physical change to the urban green space and promotion/marketing programmes particularly for park use and physical activity); strong evidence for the greening of vacant lots for health, well-being (e.g. reduction in stress) and social (e.g. reduction in crime) outcomes; strong evidence for the provision of urban street trees and green infrastructure for storm water management for environmental outcomes (e.g. increased biodiversity, reduced air pollution, climate change adaptation). Urban green space has an important role to play in creating a culture of health and well-being. Results show promising evidence to support the use of certain urban green space interventions for health, social and environmental benefits. The findings have important implications for policymakers, practitioners and researchers.

Abstract:Urban green space is urban green infrastructure and the important urban life support system. It has important ecological and socio-economic functions. It also becomes the important standard on evaluating urban ecological sustainability and life quality. In this paper, the ecological, economic and social functions of urban green space were systematically summarized, a number of issues to be settled urgently are proposed. For example, how do the urban green spaces influence the urban development form? How will a green space ecological network be developed for the people and for the conservation of biodiversity? How will the ecological, social-economic values of green spaces be measured? How can results of these values of green spaces be incorporated into the comprehensive urban green planning? Finally, the development trend of urban green space conservation, management as well as planning in the future are pointed out, as well. A comprehensive urban green space framework is also proposed which could contribute to management and planning of urban green space future development in the Chinese cities.

Abstract:Background: Over half of the world's population now lives in urban areas, and this proportion is expected to increase. While there have been numerous reviews of empirical studies on the link between nature and human health, very few have focused on the urban context, and most have examined almost exclusively cross-sectional research. This review is a first step toward assessing the possibility of causal relationships between nature and health in urban settings. Methods: Through systematic review of published literature, we explored the association between urban green space and human health. Results: We found consistent negative association between urban green space exposure and mortality, heart rate, and violence, and positive association with attention, mood, and physical activity. Results were mixed, or no association was found, in studies of urban green space exposure and general health, weight status, depression, and stress (via cortisol concentration). The number of studies was too low to generalize about birth outcomes, blood pressure, heart rate variability, cancer, diabetes, or respiratory symptoms. Conclusions: More studies using rigorous study design are needed to make generalizations, and meta-analyses, of these and other health outcomes possible. These findings may assist urban managers, organizations, and communities in their efforts to increase new or preserve existing green space.

Abstract:Numerous scientific studies, applying different approaches, have provided evidence of the links between the environment and people's health. Green spaces have been the subject of research aimed at exploring their benefits as components of the urban environment. We investigated possible causal relationships between green spaces and health, with the aim of addressing the following question. Does the mere material presence of green spaces contribute to the health of people who live in its vicinity, or are the health-promoting qualities of green spaces attributed to the ability of people to actually see, access, and enjoy them? The latter view highlights the relational dimension of places, and it entails personal relationships with places which are imbued with psychological meaning and significance for those who visit and experience them. We reviewed relevant literature, comprising a total of 189 papers on this topic that have been published over the first two decades of this century. Our findings showed that the material aspects of green spaces, such as their abundance and proximity to residences, received much more attention in studies than their quality and characteristics. However, relational rather than material measures of green spaces demonstrated statistically greater positive impacts of green spaces on health. These findings indicate that both sensory stimuli and activities and feelings attached to green spaces are essential for better health outcomes. Incorporating a relational perspective of green place-thinking into the existing literature on green spaces and health could contribute to optimizing the positive effects of green spaces and thus to the creation of healthy and livable cities.

Abstract:The development of urban green space is closely related to public health. This article reviews the researches about green space that based on public health, exploring the relationship between green space and public health. Most of literatures confirmed the positive correlation between green space and public health, but there may be a complex relationship between them. Green space may have a positive impact on public health, mainly because of the natural elements of green space, and the promotion of healthy behaviors. Now green space is regarded as public health policy, and the existing research results provide references for green space design. The final part proposes the research prospects based on current disputes and difficulties.

Abstract:Several reviews have consolidated the evidence on the impact of living near an urban green space on improving health and education outcomes and reducing mortality. However, there is limited evidence on the effectiveness or cost-effectiveness of specific improvements to these urban green spaces, which would help decision-makers make informed decisions on how to invest in urban green spaces. Therefore, this review synthesizes the impact of more specific changes to, or investments in, urban green spaces on health and education outcomes, synthesizes the cost-effectiveness of these interventions, and critiques the applicability of the evidence for an economic evaluation. We find that interventions targeted towards improving play areas or fitness equipment tended to have mostly positive impacts on physical activity, while interventions on improving walking path, or the overall greenery showed a more mixed impact on physical activity. There were only two studies on the impact of changes to urban green spaces on mental health, with only one finding a positive association of the intervention with depression, and there were no studies measuring the impact of changes to urban green spaces and educational outcomes. From a cost-effectiveness perspective, we find that typically very small improvements are required to make the interventions a cost-effective policy choice; however, we found several limitations with using the existing evidence to estimate the cost-effectiveness of the intervention. Overall, we found that most of the evidence does suggest that improvements to urban green spaces can lead to improvements in physical activity, but further research is needed on the impact on mental health and educational outcomes. Furthermore, additional evidence with longer time horizons, multi-sectoral benefits, distributional outcomes, and more consistent outcome measures would assist in informing cost-effectiveness and may ultimately lead to improved decision-making around investments for urban green spaces in specific contexts.

Abstract:We systematically summarizes and evaluates the relationship between green and blue spaces and human health through an umbrella review of epidemiological meta-analyses up to the year 2024. Green spaces have been recognized for their ecological services, including air purification and biodiversity protection, which contribute to the enhancement of life quality and well-being. The review highlights significant advancements in research methodologies and the emergence of new evidence linking green spaces with reduced risks of various health issues, such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and improved mental health. The study follows the PRISMA guidelines and includes meta-analyses from PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases, focusing on new evidence and methodological improvements. Inclusion criteria encompass studies on human populations, exposure to green and blue spaces, and health outcomes such as mortality, disease risk, and physiological indicators. Data extraction and quality assessment of evidence and methods are conducted using the GRADE system and AMSTAR 2 tool. The review finds that green space exposure is associated with reduced all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease mortality, incidence of diabetes and metabolic syndrome, low birth weight, and mental health improvements. Blue spaces also show positive associations with health outcomes, including reduced obesity rates and improved psychological well-being. However, the evidence regarding green space exposure and specific health outcomes like cancer, asthma, and allergic rhinitis remains heterogeneous and unclear. The review underscores the need for future research to address methodological limitations, incorporate various green space indicators, and explore the complex mechanisms of human-environment interactions. It concludes by emphasizing the importance of green and blue spaces in urban planning and public health strategies to improve residents' health and quality of life.

The impact of green spaces on mental health in urban settings: a scoping review

Abstract:Background: Our planet is currently experiencing the largest wave of urban growth in history, with 55% of the world's population (4.2 billion people) currently living in urban areas, a figure set to rise to 70% by 2050. Primary care is the first point of treatment for most mental health disorders. Since the urban environment and health are intrinsically linked, it is useful to examine the effectiveness of Nature-Based Solutions in addressing mental health.Aims: The aim of this scoping review was to examine "How urban green spaces can improve mental health and wellbeing among patients attending general practice and primary care?"Methods: The scoping review framework comprised a five-stage process developed by Arksey and O'Malley.Results: Twenty-five studies were included in the review, mostly cross-sectional studies. A wide range of mental health outcomes were identified. Out of the 25 included studies, 23 showed positive associations between mental health and green space characteristics.Conclusion: Our findings suggest that while green spaces are associated with positive mental health outcomes, most studies were cross-sectional in nature and provided limited evidence for association. Furthermore, the population samples used in most of the studies were taken from national survey data and were not specifically primary care patients. Further studies that assess primary care patients specifically are warranted.

Abstract:With rapid urbanization, the increasing separation between humans and the natural environment is exacerbating mental health challenges. Research shows that contact with the natural environment yields significant psychological benefits. However, existing theories have limitations in sample diversity and explanatory power. This study reviewed and tested five major theoretical frameworks, aiming to develop a new interdisciplinary theoretical framework. Using a questionnaire, data from 413 participants were analyzed via structural equation modeling. The results confirmed the important roles of physiological and cognitive effects, and psychological needs satisfaction, in how the natural environment influences mental health. This research created a progressive theoretical framework that integrates these findings, enhancing understanding of the complex mechanisms by which nature affects mental health and informing urban planning. Future research, based on this framework and involving larger samples, will aim to develop a more comprehensive theoretical system.

Abstract:urban comfort. The disorderly growth and lack of planning had negative consequences on the environment quality and the well-being of its inhabitants. Reflections and studies have demonstrated the improvement of the environmental quality also come from the green areas, a primordial element in the search for development with new planning practices. This work aims to analyze the literature on the influence of green areas and public open spaces on the environmental and climatological quality of cities, supporting urban microclimate and social well-being. As a methodological basis, a literature review was developed, which included books, articles, theses, and dissertations. After, it was analyzed how the urbanization process of cities and inadequate urban planning directly reflect on environmental comfort. Furthermore, to build an information base about the theme, the investigation of the contributions of green areas and public open spaces in this context was discussed. According to the results found, urban vegetation plays a fundamental role in a healthier built environment for all, and with that, the work helps in future research, and theoretical debates through the realization of this review and contributes to urban landscape projects.

Abstract:Urban green space, such as parks, forests, green roofs, streams, and community gardens, provides critical ecosystem services. Green space also promotes physical activity, psychological well-being, and the general public health of urban residents. This paper reviews the Anglo-American literature on urban green space, especially parks, and compares efforts to green US and Chinese cities. Most studies reveal that the distribution of such space often disproportionately benefits predominantly White and more affluent communities. Access to green space is therefore increasingly recognized as an environmental justice issue. Many US cities have implemented strategies to increase the supply of urban green space, especially in park-poor neighborhoods. Strategies include greening of remnant urban land and reuse of obsolete or underutilized transportation infrastructure. Similar strategies are being employed in Chinese cities where there is more state control of land supply but similar market incentives for urban greening. In both contexts, however, urban green space strategies may be paradoxical: while the creation of new green space to address environmental justice problems can make neighborhoods healthier and more esthetically attractive, it also can increase housing costs and property values. Ultimately, this can lead to gentrification and a displacement of the very residents the green space strategies were designed to benefit. Urban planners, designers, and ecologists, therefore, need to focus on urban green space strategies that are ‘just green enough’ and that explicitly protect social as well as ecological sustainability.

Abstract:In recent years, rapid urbanization has brought about high-intensity construction and development activities, which have seriously impacted the urban ecological environment. Chinese cities have entered a new era that emphasizes the connotation and quality of urban development, social welfare, and the quality of life for residents. Residents' pursuit of a beautiful ecological environment and a social form that is suitable for both living and production is increasing. With the implementation of the "Healthy China" strategy, healthy cities, as an important aspect of this strategy, should conform to the requirements of the times.
