Abstract:Green manure is a crucial strategy for increasing cereal yield and mitigating environmental burden while reducing chemical N fertilizer. To effectively tackle climate change, finding ways to reduce nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from green manuring systems is vital. Herein, field and 15N labeled microcosm experiments were arranged to investigate the effect and mechanisms of green manuring and zeolite application on N2O emission. Both experiments comprised four treatments: conventional chemical N (N100), 70 % chemical N (N70), N70 with green manure (N70 + CV), and N70 + CV combined with zeolite (N70 + CV + Z). Compared with N100, both N70 + CV and N70 + CV + Z maintained maize yield, cumulative N2O emissions decreased by 37.7 % and 34.9 % in N70 + CV + Z in 2022-yr and 2023-yr, and by 12.8 % in N70 + CV in 2022-yr. Moreover, the reduction of N2O emission primarily occurred after incorporating green manure. The N100 and N70 + CV demonstrated a similar transformed proportion of chemical N to N2O (i.e., 4.9 % and 4.7 %) while reducing it to 2.7 % in N70 + CV + Z. Additionally, a mere 0.7 % of green manure N was transformed to N2O in both N70 + CV and N70 + CV + Z treatments. Compared with N100, both N70 + CV and N70 + CV + Z decreased the relative abundances of ammonia oxidation microbes, increased denitrifier and the ratios of (nirK + nirS)/nosZ and norBC/nosZ. Furthermore, compared with N70 + CV, N70 + CV + Z decreased the relative abundances of N2O-producer and the ratios of (nirK + nirS)/nosZ and norBC/nosZ in denitrification. These findings revealed that the reduction of N2O emissions resulting from green manure replaced chemical N was mainly due to weakened nitrification, while zeolite reduced N2O emissions attributed to enhanced conversion of N2O to N2. Moreover, certain key N-cycling functional bacteria, such as Phycisphaerae, Rubrobacteria, and Thermoflexia, were positively correlated with N2O emission. In contrast, Dehalococcoidia, Gammaproteobacteria, and Betaproteobacteria were negatively correlated with N2O emission. This investigation uncovered the underlying mechanisms for effectively reducing N2O emissions through green manuring combined with zeolite.
NH3 and N2O emission and nitrogen loss rate from biogas liquid produced by pig slurry after topdressing on vegetable fields

Abstract:Application of the by-products from anaerobic digestion of animal manures is a promising solution in recycling animal wastes as resources.By the end of 2008,about 0.13 billion tons of liquid and solid digested residues have been produced in China.The predominating portion of which is in liquid state.The produced biogas liquid after anaerobic digestion is characterized by the high concentrations of dissolved organic carbon(DOC),nitrogen(N),potassium(K) and phosphorus(P).These digested slurries are very often applied on the top of vegetable fields not only as valuable nutrient resources,but also increases soil fertility and plant nutrition.As the high availability of the nutrients in biogas slurry,N loss would happen through ammonia(NH 3) volatilization and nitrous oxide(N 2 O) emission.To understand the loss of N after topdressing of biogas liquid from anaerobic digested pig slurry(DPS),a field experiment was carried out in a vegetable greenhouse in winter and early summer.The NH 3 and N 2 O emissions were assessed and soil dissolved mineral and organic nitrogen contents were determined,the nitrogen loss and N efficiency of biogas liquid were calculated and the key drivers of the dynamics in soil NH 3 and N 2 O emissions were discussed.The results showed that NH 3 emission was observed immediately following every topdressing time of DPS and tended to increase in the following 48 h.The N 2 O emission was burst after the first topdressing time,and slightly increased in the subsequent topdressing periods and the emission rate tended to be steady.The average NH 3 and N 2 O emission rates from DPS treatments were significantly higher than those from chemical fertilizer.Overall 16.4%-23.2% of the N contained in the biogas liquid lost through NH 3 and N 2 O emissions in winter,and 24.7%-27.5% lost in summer.The temperature,water and pH conditions in soil should bring enough attention with regard to the fertilizer with high concentrations of NH+ 4-N,NO3-N and DON.
Effects of Zeolitic Urea on Nitrogen Leaching (NH4-N and NO3-N) and Volatilization (NH3) in Spodosols and Alfisols

Abstract:Global use of urea nitrogen (N) fertilizer is increasing, but N losses are still very high (40–70%). Zeolites have the capability of holding NH4+, thus reducing N losses when applied as a soil amendment. However, application of a large quantity of zeolite is costly and inconvenient. In this study, zeolitic fertilizers were evaluated to select the best formulation with reduced leaching of NH4-N and NO3-N and NH3 volatilization in agricultural soils (Alfisol and Spodosol). The treatments included the following: T0 = control, T1 = urea fertilizer, T2 = zeo-urea (1:1), T3 = zeo-urea (2:1), T4 = zeo-urea (3:1), T5 = zeo-urea (1:2), and T6 = zeo-urea (1:3). Leaching was performed at 4, 8, 12, 19, 25, 32, 39 and 45 days after the soils were treated with the designated fertilizers, including control, and packed into columns. Leachate samples were collected after each leaching event and analyzed for the concentrations of NH4-N and NO3-N and the quantity of leachate. Ammonia volatilization was recorded at days 1, 5, 9, 13 and 20 of soil treatments. Results indicate that zeolitic fertilizer formulations effectively reduced N losses. NH4-N loss was reduced by 13% and 28% by zeo-urea (1:1) in Alfisol and Spodosol soils, respectively, whereas zeo-urea (2:1) and zeo-urea (3:1) effectively decreased NO3-N leaching in Alfisol. Volatilization loss of NH3 was reduced by 47% in Spodosol and 32% in Alfisol soil with zeo-urea (1:1) as compared with that of urea fertilizer. The results suggest that zeo-urea (1:1) is an effective fertilizer formulation for reducing N losses, especially in Alfisol, as compared with conventional urea fertilizer.
Zeolite as a Tool to Recycle Nitrogen and Phosphorus in Paddy Fields under Straw Returning Conditions

Abstract:Excess nitrogen (N) caused by straw returning to paddy fields undergoing flooding irrigation deteriorates the water quality. The purpose of this research was to use both simulated field and pot experiments to explore a new approach using zeolite to recycle this excess N. The results from simulated field experiments in stagnant water showed N adsorption with different zeolite applications (25, 50, 75, 100, 125, and 150 g L−1). Pot experiments revealed how straw and reused zeolite applications affected the concentrations of ammonia N (NH4+-N), nitrate N (NO3−-N), total N (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) in the surface water and soil layers of the paddy field. Zeolite showed a strong ability to adsorb NH4+-N in wastewater, even in a simulated drainage ditch (100 g L−1 zeolite adsorbed 74% NH4+-N). The zeolite recycled from the drainage ditch was still able to reduce N concentration caused by straw decomposition in the surface water. Zeolite adsorption reduced the peak values of NH4+-N, TN, and TP by 30%, 19%, and 5%, respectively. Based on these findings and conventional field designs, the use of 20 t ha−1 zeolite in the field is effective for recycling N and P. This research provides a sustainable development method to mitigate the water quality deterioration caused by straw returning to the field.

Abstract:The nitrification inhibitor, 3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPP), can be used to reduce N2O emissions from agricultural ecosystems. However, the effectiveness of DMPP varies among soils, and this is due to both abiotic (e.g. soil properties) and biotic factors (e.g. ammonia oxidizers and denitrifier communities). Understanding the nature of these effects is necessary to improve the efficacy of DMPP, therefore encouraging wider adoption and environmental benefits. In particular, soil microbial properties associated with variation in efficacy remain largely unknown. In this study four contrasting arable soils (a grey desert soil, an alluvial paddy soil, a loess formed paddy soil, and a red soil), were characterized based on DMPP inhibition of N2O emissions and associated microbial functional guilds. DMPP significantly inhibited nitrification and N2O emissions, with an average inhibitory rate ranging from 41.7% in a red soil to 90.0% in a grey desert soil. Ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and archaea (AOA) exhibited contrasting response patterns to DMPP addition. Notably, suppression of N2O emissions by DMPP only occurred alongside fluctuations in AOB abundance. However, when AOB were inhibited, AOA abundance increased. Soil-dependent response patterns to DMPP were observed for ammonia oxidizers and denitrifiers in terms of community structure. Partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) found that abiotic factors, particularly pH, and biological factors such as ammonia oxidizer communities, were closely linked to N2O emissions. Our findings provide evidence that: (i) DMPP effectively inhibits nitrification through inhibiting the abundance of AOB across soil types; (ii) releasing AOA from the competition with AOB allows AOA to efficiently grow and multiply, even under high ammonium conditions; and (iii) abiotic factors play a more important role than biotic factors in soil N2O emissions.
Slow pyrolysis liquid in reducing NH3 emissions from cattle slurry - Impacts on plant growth and soil organisms

Abstract:A substantial percentage of manure nitrogen (N) can be lost as gaseous ammonia (NH3) during storage and field spreading. Lowering slurry pH is a simple and accepted method for preserving its N. Efficiency of slow pyrolysis liquid (PL) produced from birch (Betula sp.) as an acidifying agent, and its ability to reduce NH3 emissions following surface application of cattle slurry, was studied in a field experiment. Untreated slurry (US) and slurries acidified with PL and sulfuric acid (SA) were applied to the second harvest of a grass ley. Immediate NH3 emissions, grass biomass, N-yield and possible toxic impacts on soil nematodes and enchytraeids were examined. Furthermore, the effects on soil respiration, nitrogen dynamics and seed germination were studied in subsequent laboratory experiments. In the field, over one third of the water-extractable ammonium-N (NH4-N) applied was lost through NH3 volatilization from US. SA and PL acidified slurries reduced NH3-N emission rate equally from 3.4 to <0.04 kg ha-1 h-1. Acidification with SA resulted in the highest and that with PL in the lowest grass dry matter (DM) and N yield. Neither SA nor PL acidification had negative effects on soil enchytraeids or nematodes. Reduced yield production, seed germination and delayed microbial activity after PL slurry application were most probably caused by the PL containing organic compounds. However, later increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) production and improved seed germination suggest that these compounds were rapidly volatilized and/or degraded by soil microbes. Though PL efficiently cut NH3 emission from surface-spread slurry, further studies on appropriate application methods and possible phytotoxicity are needed.
Zeolite Amendment Coupled with Alternate Wetting and Drying to Reduce Nitrogen Loss and Enhance Rice Production

Abstract:Clinoptilolite zeolite (Z) has been increasingly recognized as a valuable soil conditioner, which is beneficial to nitrogen (N) loss reduction and crop yield improvement. However, limited information is available for a rice production system, especially under alternate wetting and drying irrigation (AWD). Therefore, a 2-year field experiment with lysimeter was carried out in a split plot design with two irrigation regimes (CF: continuously flooded irrigation, AWD: alternate wetting and drying irrigation) as main plots and three Z amendment rates (0, 5 and 10 t Z ha(-1)) as sub-plots. The impact of Z amendment on ammonia (NH3) volatilization, N leaching, rice grain yield, water productivity (WP) and economic benefit were analyzed under both irrigation regimes. The results showed that AWD slightly reduced NH3 volatilization without Z application, but significantly increased residual mineral N (RMN) in soil at the depths of 0 - 30 and 30 - 60 cm, and NH4+ -N and NO3--N leaching, relative to CF. AWD-grown rice significantly improved WP without affecting grain yield in 2016, but reduced yield in 2017 without Z amendment. Compared with control (without Z amendment), addition of 5 and 10 t Z ha(-1) increased RMN by 12 and 21%, respectively in the 0 - 30 cm soil depth, but reduced it by 18 and 32%, respectively in the 30 - 60 cm soil depth. Total NH3 volatilization and NH4+ -N and NO3--N leaching loss decreased with increasing rates of Z amendment. Z amendment significantly increased N uptake, rice grain yield, economic benefit and WP, especially under AWD. In the two years, integration of 10 t Z ha(-1) with either AWD or CF management reduced NH3 volatilization without increasing N leaching and increased rice grain yield and WP, with an increased economic benefit of $126 - 195 ha(-1), as compared to conventional management (CF without Z). The use of zeolite merits further investigation for application in the rice production systems.

Abstract:Increasing use of manure nutrients in crop production and decreasing the input of chemical fertilizers, is a promising way to achieve a more circular economy and more sustainable food systems. The integrated effects of amended composting manure with additives and a 50% substitution of chemical fertilizer nitrogen (N) input by amended manure N input to cropland were proved to halve ammonia (NH3) emissions from an integrate manure-cropland system. However, the accompanied impacts of these measures on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the integrate manure-cropland system have not been well quantified. Here, we examined the effects of improved manure storage and treatment and its usage at field on GHG emissions from a system perspective, based on a two-year experiment in the North China Plain (NCP). Manure storage and treatment included natural storage (NS) and composting with straw, with or without amendment by zeolite (Z) and superphosphate (SP). Manure products were applied as basal fertilizer for both crops. Results showed that CH4 was the dominant GHG source in the natural storage treatment, whereas N2O dominated in the manure composting treatments. Amending manure with straw, Z and SP stimulated 15–48 times N2O emission and decreased CH4 emissions by 82%–91% during storage and treatment. Replacement of 50% synthetic fertilizer N by manure N decreased total system GHG emissions by 25%–34%. Differences between composted manure treatments in total system GHG emissions were relatively small, although comparatively higher in amended manure treatments; however, they promoted greater soil organic carbon sink activity, resulting in no significant difference in net global warming potential (GWP) and greenhouse gas emission intensity (GHGI). Application of amended manure produced high nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in the integrated crop–manure system. The NH3 mitigation approach of replacing 50% of synthetic fertilizer N by amended manure N synergistically decreased total GHG emissions, increased system NUE and also increased the net economic benefit by 5%–11% over the 2 years of the experiment.
Swine Manure Reduces Nitrous Oxide Emissions from Acidic Red Soil Due to Mineral N Immobilization and Alleviated Acidification

Abstract:Swine manure is widely used for ameliorating red soil acidification, but little information is available about its effect on N2O emissions. To explore the effects, a 35-day incubation experiment was conducted with two soils under different fertilization history: chemical fertilizers only (F) and combination of chemical fertilizers with swine manure (M). The treatments included no fertilizer (control), 100% N from urea (M0), and urea plus swine manure, which supplied 20% (M20), 40% (M40), 60% (M60), and 100% (M100) of total N. Soil N2O emission rates, pH, exchangeable acidity, mineral N species, dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen, microbial biomass carbon, and their inner relationships were examined. The N2O emission rates markedly increased following the treatments, reached peaks before day 2, and thereafter decreased sharply to the level of the control by day 25, 25, 23, 15, and 9 in F soil and by day 25, 25, 23, 19, and 11 in M soil for M0, M20, M40, M60, and M100 treatments, respectively. As swine manure application rate increased, the cumulative N2O emissions of F soil decreased significantly, while, for M soil, there was no significant difference among M0, M20, M40, and M60 treatments, which were higher than the M100 treatment. At the end of incubation, soil pH in F and M soils followed the order M0 < M20 < M40 < M60 < control < M100 and vice versa for exchangeable Al3+ and acidity. F soil had relatively higher NH4+-N concentration in M0 treatment and higher NO3−-N concentrations in M0 and M20 treatments than M soil. Soil pH and NH4+-N had the greatest relative contribution to N2O emissions. Overall, this study indicates that partial chemical N replacement by swine manure could effectively mitigate N2O emissions from acidic red soil primarily because of mineral N immobilization and alleviated red soil acidification. Thus, swine manure has the potential to co-ameliorate red soil acidification and N2O emission. Further research is needed to determine the effect of swine manure on N2O emission reductions under field conditions and the overall benefit in effective N management.

Mitigation of N2O emission from granular organic fertilizer with alkali- and salt-resistant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria

Abstract:Aim: Organic fertilizer application significantly stimulates nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from agricultural soils. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) strains are the core of bio-fertilizer or bio-organic fertilizer, while their beneficial effects are inhibited by environmental conditions, such as alkali and salt stress observed in organic manure or soil. This study aims to screen alkali- and salt-resistant PGPR that could mitigate N2O emission after applying strain-inoculated organic fertilizer. Methods and results: Among the 29 candidate strains, 11 (7 Bacillus spp., 2 Achromobacter spp., 1 Paenibacillus sp., and 1 Pseudomonas sp.) significantly mitigated N2O emissions from the organic fertilizer after inoculation. Seven strains were alkali tolerant (pH 10) and five were salt tolerant (4% salinity) in pure culture. Seven strains were selected for further evaluation in two agricultural soils. Five of these seven strains could significantly decrease the cumulative N2O emissions from Anthrosol, while six could significantly decrease the cumulative N2O emissions from Cambisol after the inoculation into the granular organic fertilizer compared with the non-inoculated control. Conclusions: Inoculating alkali- and salt-resistant PGPR into organic fertilizer can reduce N2O emissions from soils under microcosm conditions. Further studies are needed to investigate whether these strains will work under field conditions, under higher salinity, or at different soil pH.
Clinoptilolite zeolite and cellulose amendments to reduce ammonia volatilization in a calcareous sandy soil

Abstract:Leaching of nitrate (NO 3 − ) below the root zone and gaseous losses of nitrogen (N) such as ammonia (NH 3 ) volatilization, are major mechanisms of N loss from agricultural soils. New techniques to minimize such losses are needed to maximize N uptake efficiency and minimize production costs and the risk of potential N contamination of ground and surface waters. The effects of cellulose (C), clinoptilolite zeolite (CZ), or a combination of both (C+CZ) on NH 3 volatilization and N transformation in a calcareous Riviera fine sand (loamy, siliceous, hyperthermic, Arenic Glossaqualf) from a citrus grove were investigated in a laboratory incubation study. Ammonia volatilization from NH 4 NO 3 (AN), (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 (AS), and urea (U) applied at 200 mg N kg −1 soil decreased by 2.5-, 2.1- and 0.9-fold, respectively, with cellulose application at 15 g kg −1 and by 4.4-, 2.9- and 3.0-fold, respectively, with CZ application at 15 g kg −1 as compared with that from the respective sources without the amendments. Application of cellulose plus CZ (each at 15 g kg −1 ) was the most effective in decreasing NH 3 volatilization. Application of cellulose increased the microbial biomass, which was responsible for immobilization of N, and thus decreased volatilization loss of NH 3 –N. The effect of CZ, on the other hand, may be due to increased retention of NH 4 in the ion-exchange sites. The positive effect of interaction between cellulose and CZ amendment on microbial biomass was probably due to improved nutrient retention and availability to microorganisms in the soil. Thus, the amendments provide favorable conditions for microbial growth. These results indicate that soil amendment of CZ or CZ plus organic materials such as cellulose has great potential in reducing fertilizer N loss in sandy soils.
Enhancing nitrogen use efficiency and yield of maize (Zea mays L.) through Ammonia volatilization mitigation and nitrogen management approaches

Abstract:Management of nitrogen (N) fertilizer is a critical factor that can improve maize ( Zea mays L. ) production. On the other hand, high volatilization losses of N also pollute the air. A field experiment was established using a silt clay soil to examine the effect of sulfur-coated urea and sulfur from gypsum on ammonia (NH 3 ) emission, N use efficiency (NUE), and the productivity of maize crop under alkaline calcareous soil. The experimental design was a randomized complete block (RCBD) with seven treatments in three replicates: control with no N, urea 150 alone (150 kg N ha −1 ), urea 200 alone (200 kg N ha −1 ), urea 150 + S (60 kg ha −1 S from gypsum), urea 200 + S, SCU 150 (sulfur-coated urea) and SCU 200 . The results showed that the urea 150 + S and urea 200 + S significantly reduced the total NH 3 by (58 and 42%) as compared with the sole application urea 200 . The NH 3 emission reduced further in the treatment with SCU 150 and SCU 200 by 74 and 65%, respectively, compared to the treatment with urea 200 . The maize plant biomass, grain yield, and total N uptake enhanced by 5–14%, 4–17%, and 7–13, respectively, in the treatments with urea 150 + s and urea 200 + S, relative to the treatment with urea 200 alone. Biomass, grain yield, and total N uptake further increased significantly by 22–30%, 25–28%, and 26–31%, respectively, in the treatments with SCU 150 and SCU 200 , relative to the treatment with urea 200 alone. The applications of SCU 150 enhanced the nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) by (72%) and SCU 200 by (62%) respectively, compared with the sole application of urea 200 alone. In conclusion, applying S-coated urea at a lower rate of 150 kg N ha −1 compared with a higher rate of 200 kg N ha −1 may be an effective way to reduce N fertilizer application rate and mitigate NH 3 emission, improve NUE, and increase maize yield. More investigations are suggested under different soil textures and climatic conditions to declare S-coated urea at 150 kg N ha −1 as the best application rate for maize to enhance maize growth and yield.

Abstract:Nitrogen is a macronutrient that is applied in substantial amounts as a chemical fertiliser to conventional agricultural systems. However, loss of nitrogen from agricultural systems to the environment, in the form of gases (N 2 O) and leachate (NO 3 ), is detrimental to the environment. As such, improving the nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) of crops is an essential component of sustainable agriculture. Biostimulants are a category of products that improve NUE when applied to crops and/or soil. Here, we examined the effects of PSI-362, an Ascophyllum nodosum biostimulant mixed with and applied on calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) granules, on grass yield, quality traits, and environmental impacts in lysimeter trials under natural weather conditions. By using PSI-362, it was possible to reduce nitrogen application by 25% without a significant loss in yield compared to a conventional 100% N system. We also observed an increase in NUE under a 75% N with PSI-362 co-application fertilisation regime, and a significant increase in crude protein content compared to the 100% N fertilisation controls. Furthermore, this reduced nitrogen application also resulted in reduced nitrogen loss through leachate (NO 3 ) and N 2 O to the atmosphere. The total NUE for PSI-362 + fertiliser granules ranged from 58.7% to 78.6% depending on the biostimulant dose, which was significantly better than the fertiliser alone. Our results showed that this biostimulant, which can easily be incorporated into conventional agronomic practices, allows for a more sustainable approach to pasture-based systems.

Abstract:The huge excrement quantity from the increasing large-scale livestock stressed the ecological, environmental deterioration. As a major benefit for handling livestock manure, the slurry of biogas (BS) is developed during the production of biogas that might increase plant productivity. However, nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from BS are considered a significant danger to the environment due to global warming potential. Furthermore, applying different proportions of BS combined with chemical fertilizer (CF) on N2O productions in the North China Plain (NCP) remains unclear. Herein, two sequential field trials were performed by maize-wheat rotations to substitute the CF by BS and reduce N2O emissions while keeping the crop yield stable. Four treatments were conducted, including T1, T3, T6, and CK. A total of 226.5 kg N ha-1 used in the maize-wheat rotation system. Additionally, different ratios of BS (100%, 80%, and 50%) combined with CF were used in wheat season in the tillering stage. Results showed integrated applications of BS with CF have potential for reducing N2O emission. Our findings showed that the maximum grain yield of CF was 6250 kg ha-1, which might be achieved by applying 38% BS and 62% of CF. This ratio yielded 1.03 kg ha-1 N2O emissions, which was 15% lesser than the N2O emission of CK, 1.21 kg ha-1. Considering whole growing period of wheat biogas treatments significantly reduced the cumulative N2O emissions from 17% to 26% compared to CF. To achieve maximum yield and minimum N2O emissions, an optimum 38% BS ratio has been suggested. The integrated use of BS and CF provided the greatest grain yield because of necessary nutrients provided by both slurry and CF. Consequently, N2O emissions reduced based on frequency and type of fertilizer. In conclusion, 38% ratio of BS combined with 62% CF would be a suitable approach to mitigate N2O emission and simultaneously increase crop yield in NCP.

Abstract:Low nitrogen (N) use efficiency of broadcast slurry application leads to nutrient losses, air and water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and—in particular in a warming climate—to soil N mining. Here we test the alternative slurry acidification and injection techniques for their mitigation potential compared to broadcast spreading in montane grassland. We determined (1) the fate of 15 N labelled slurry in the plant-soil-microbe system and soil-atmosphere exchange of greenhouse gases over one fertilization/harvest cycle and (2) assessed the longer-term contribution of fertilizer 15 N to soil organic N formation by the end of the growing season. The isotope tracing approach was combined with a space for time climate change experiment. Simulated climate change increased productivity, ecosystem respiration, and net methane uptake irrespective of management, but the generally low N 2 O fluxes remained unchanged. Compared to the broadcast spreading, slurry acidification showed lowest N losses, thus increased productivity and fertilizer N use efficiency (38% 15 N recovery in plant aboveground plant biomass). In contrast, slurry injection showed highest total fertilizer N losses, but increased fertilization-induced soil organic N formation by 9–12 kg N ha −1 season −1 . Slurry management effects on N 2 O and CH 4 fluxes remained negligible. In sum, our study shows that the tested alternative slurry application techniques can increase N use efficiency and/or promote soil organic N formation from applied fertilizer to a remarkable extent. However, this is still not sufficient to prevent soil N mining mostly resulting from large plant N exports that even exceed total fertilizer N inputs.

Abstract:Liming of acidic agricultural soils has been proposed as a strategy to mitigate nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, as increased soil pH reduces the N2O/N2 product ratio of denitrification. The capacity of different calcareous (calcite and dolomite) and siliceous minerals to increase soil pH and reduce N2O emissions was assessed in a two‐year grassland field experiment. An associated pot experiment was conducted using homogenized field soils for controlling spatial soil variability. Nitrous oxide emissions were highly episodic with emission peaks in response to freezing‐ thawing and fertilization. Liming with dolomite caused a pH increase from 5.1 to 6.2 and reduced N2O‐emissions by 30% and 60% after fertilization and freezing‐thawing events, respectively. Over the course of the two‐year field trial, N2O emissions were significantly lower in dolomite‐limed than non‐limed soil (p<0.05), although this effect was variable over time. Unexpectedly, no significant reduction of N2O emission was found in the calcite treatment, despite the largest pH increase of all tested minerals. We tentatively attribute this to increased N2O production by overall increase in nitrogen turnover rates (both nitrification and denitrification) following rapid pH increase in the first year after liming. Siliceous materials showed little pH effect and had no significant effect on N2O emissions probably due to their lower buffering capacity and lower cation content. In the pot experiment using soils taken from the field plots three years after liming and exposing them to natural freezing‐thawing, both calcite (p<0.01) and dolomite (p<0.05) significantly reduced cumulative N2O emission by 50% and 30%, respectively relative to the non‐limed control. These results demonstrate that the overall effect of liming is to reduce N2O emission, although high lime doses may lead to a transiently enhanced emission.

Abstract:Reducing the size of clinoptilolite accentuates its structural attributes, notably mesoporosity and the silica−aluminum ratio, which enhanced its capabilities as an efficient adsorbent and modifier. This research aims to utilize the augmented small−size effect of clinoptilolite to develop a high−performance nano−clinoptilolite based nitrogen (N) fertilizer, to substitute an equivalent amount of urea. To this end, a two−year field experiment was conducted using a single−factor randomized complete block design, involving five different nano−clinoptilolite based N fertilizer mixed with urea (ZN) ratios: control treatment (100% Urea, CK); 20% Z & 80% Urea (Z2N8); 30% Z & 70% Urea (Z3N7); 40% Z & 60% Urea (Z4N6); 50% Z & 50% Urea (Z5N5). This study explored the effects of ZN on ammonia volatilization (AV), N runoff loss, N accumulation, N balance, yield, and ecological benefits in paddy fields. The results showed that Z2N8, Z3N7, Z4N6, and Z5N5 reduced the total AV losses by 8.57%, 20.52%, 30.20%, and 37.13% (two−year average), and reduced runoff losses by 23.29%, 29.93%, 39.66%, and 43.76%, respectively. Additionally, Z2N8, Z3N7, Z4N6, and Z5N5 increased whole−plant N accumulation by 24.32%, 16.84%, 9.00%, 4.85%, and raised rice yield by 15.28%, 10.28%, 6.99%, 5.05%, respectively. This result indicates that ZN can enhance N utilization, although the effectiveness diminishes with an increased application ratio. Furthermore, Z2N8, Z3N7, and Z4N6 lowered N surpluses by 48.77%, 25.84%, and 3.17%, respectively, while Z5N5 resulted in an increase in N surplus by 9.61% relative to the control. Compared to CK, nano−clinoptilolite based N fertilizer replacing 20% of urea (Z2N8) increased income by 14.75%, reduced environmental damage cost by 8.77%, and ultimately boosted net economic benefits by 5.33% and net economic and ecological benefits by 5.75%. In conclusion, Z2N8 can be contemplated as a compound fertilizer to be applied to farmland to enhance both economic and ecological benefits.

Abstract:This study demonstrates the leachate characteristics derived from bench-scale leach-bed reactors (LBRs) filled with chicken manure (CM) and zeolite. Zeolite was used to maintain the necessary porosity for the leaching process and to adsorb ammonia. Fresh water was added for leachate production and removed daily, in order to estimate the readily leachable organic and nitrogen matter of the CM. Tests were conducted at two ratios of zeolite to bed (10% and 3.5% v/v CMbed). Other operating parameters studied were the amount of water added in the LBRs, the leachate recirculation rate, and the hydraulic retention time (HRT). A control LBR with river pebbles at a similar size and ratio (10% v/v) with zeolite was also studied. Some experiments were repeated with CM, which had different characteristics. Compared to the control test, the LBR with zeolite at 10% v/v yielded leachate with less NH3 and a higher biochemical methane potential (BMP). However, free ΝH3 in the control experiment was below the inhibition threshold, proving that zeolite contributes to the higher BMP of leachate, and that this effect is not only due to NH3 adsorption.

Abstract:Zeolite (Z) has been widely used for improving rice production, but there is a lack of information on how nitrogen (N) accumulation and translocation affect yield performance of paddy field in the alternate wetting and drying irrigation (AWD) amended with zeolite. In this study, a 2-year field experiment with installed lysimeters was carried out to determine the influence of Z application (0, 5 and 10 t Z ha(-1)) on rice yield, tiller number, leaf area index (LAI), dry matter accumulation and translocation (DMA and DMT), N accumulation and translocation (NA and NT), inorganic N content in soil under two irrigation regimes (CF: continuously flooded irrigation, AWD). The results showed that AWD didn't affect rice grain yield in 2016, but reduced it in 2017 without Z application; and rice yield was not affected by AWD with the application of 10 t Z ha(-1) in two years, relative to CF. AWD reduced highest and ineffective tiller number in 2016, and highest and final tiller number in 2017; as well as LAI after joint-booting stage, relative to CF. Z amendment significantly increased highest and final tiller number, but didn't affect ineffective tiller number; and increased LAI after joint-booting stage. The principal components analysis showed that grain yield was more significantly correlated with the panicles per m(2), NT, and aboveground DMA and NA after panicle-initiation stage. As compared to CF, AWD significantly reduced aboveground DMA after panicle-initiation stage; aboveground NA after joint-booting stage in both years; and NT in 2016, but not in 2017. Z amendment significantly improved aboveground DMA and NA after tillering stage, as well as NT and panicles per m(2). In addition, AWD with Z amendment significantly improved inorganic N content in soil.
Post-treatment of high-rate activated sludge effluent via zeolite adsorption and recovery of ammonium-nitrogen as alternative fertilising products

Abstract:This study investigates the potential to connect nutrient flows between wastewater treatment and agriculture through a two-stage nitrogen (N) recovery system composed of high-rate activated sludge treatment in contact stabilisation mode (HRAS/CS) and column adsorption with zeolite. The HRAS/CS process removes organic matter and suspended solids in wastewater, leaving N behind in the effluent. The N was successfully recovered with the zeolite column under different scenarios, generating N and K-rich by-products. The regeneration effluent from the zeolite column with KCl contained 60-845 mg NH4+-N/L and 1.6-14.3 g K/L, having potential for use as fertigation water. The N-saturated zeolite contained 1.5-8.4 mg N/g and 14.3-19.3 mg K/g of the product fresh weight and low contaminant content, making it potentially eligible as various fertilising products. Adsorption can thus concentrate N from HRAS/CS effluent and produce by-products with potential agricultural value while meeting chemical oxygen demand and total nitrogen discharge standards.
