Abstract:Surface elastic instabilities, such as wrinkling and creasing, can enable a convenient strategy to impart reversible patterned topography to a surface. Here the classic system of a stiff layer on a soft substrate is focused, which famously produces parallel harmonic wrinkles at modest uniaxial compression that period‐double repeatedly at higher compressions and ultimately evolve into deep folds and creases. By introducing micrometer‐scale planar Bravais lattice holes to spatially pattern the substrate, these instabilities are guided into a wide variety of different patterns, including wrinkling in parallel bands and star shape bands, and radically reduce the threshold compression. The experimental patterns and thresholds are enabled to understand by considering a simple plane‐strain model for the patterned substrate‐deformation, decorated by wrinkling on the stiff surface layer. The experiments also show localized wrinkle‐crease transitions at modest compression, yielding a hierarchical surface with different generations of instability mixed together. By varying the geometrical inputs, control over the stepwise evolution of surface morphologies is demonstrated. These results demonstrate considerable control over both the patterns and threshold of the surface elastic instabilities, and have relevance to many emerging applications of morphing surfaces, including in wearable/flexible electronics, biomedical systems, and optical devices.

Abstract:Typical bilayer wrinkle systems employ soft elastomers as the substrates. In contrast, shape memory polymers have recently emerged as attractive alternatives. Besides the shape fixing capability, shape memory polymers distinguish from elastomers in that they are rigid at room temperature, but experience significant modulus drop upon heating. We hereby report unique aspects of shape memory polymers as the wrinkle substrate utilizing a metallic thin film as the top layer. The feasibility to create both reversible and irreversible wrinkles (and diffraction colors) on a single substrate is demonstrated. Experimental conditions are identified to create crack free wrinkles and the impact of various experimental parameters on the wrinkle wavelength and amplitude is investigated. The results suggest that the wrinkle mechanics deviate notably from the existing theories established with elastomers as the wrinkle substrates. Thus, a new theory will need to be developed in the future, taking into account of unique thermomechanical properties of the shape memory substrate and possible plastic deformation of the thin film.

Abstract:Here, a simple combined strategy of surface wrinkling with visible light irradiation to fabricate well tunable hierarchical surface patterns on azo-containing multilayer films is reported. The key to tailor surface patterns is to introduce a photosensitive poly(disperse orange 3) intermediate layer into the film/substrate wrinkling system, in which the modulus decrease is induced by the reversible photoisomerization. The existence of a photoinert top layer prevents the photoisomerization-induced stress release in the intermediate layer to some extent. Consequently, the as-formed wrinkling patterns can be modulated over a large area by light irradiation. Interestingly, in the case of selective exposure, the wrinkle wavelength in the exposed region decreases, while the wrinkles in the unexposed region are evolved into highly oriented wrinkles with the orientation perpendicular to the exposed/unexposed boundary. Compared with traditional single layer-based film/substrate systems, the multilayer system consisting of the photosensitive intermediate layer offers unprecedented advantages in the patterning controllability/universality. As demonstrated here, this simple and versatile strategy can be conveniently extended to functional multilayer systems for the creation of prescribed hierarchical surface patterns with optically tailored microstructures.

Abstract:Inspired by nature, comprehensive understanding and ingenious utilization of the self-organized wrinkling behaviors of the sandwiched multilayer bonded on substrates are important for engineering and/or functional laminated devices design. Herein, we report a facile and effective strategy to regulate the wrinkles morphology evolution and the resultant hierarchical surface micropatterns on azobenzene-based laminated multilayers by visible-light irradiation. Revealed by systematic experiments, the photocontrolled dynamic wrinkle evolutions are triggered by the reversible photoisomerization of azobenzene in the top azopolymer film and are strongly dependent on the intermediate photoinert layers (e.g., polystyrene and oxygen plasma-induced SiO x layer) with the wrinkle-reinforcing effect or the stress relaxation acceleration effect. Interestingly, large-area well-defined hierarchical surface wrinkle patterns could be fabricated on the multilayers upon selective exposure. In the unexposed region, the wrinkles evolved into highly oriented patterns, whereas in the exposed region, they were fully erased or evolved into smaller-wavelength wrinkles. This study not only sheds light on the morphological evolution of the wrinkling laminated composites in engineering and nature but also paves a new avenue to conveniently and controllably realize the hierarchical stimulus-responsive surface patterns.

Abstract:Photo-chromic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) is a type of smart materials which are sensitive to light. Here we harness its photo-mechanical response to flexibly control surface patterning, through modeling a film involving homeotropic nematic liquid crystals with director perpendicular to the polymer film attached on a compliant substrate. Theoretical and numerical analyses were conducted to explore the surface instability of such film/substrate systems under both uniform and non-uniform illuminations by ultraviolet (UV) light, respectively. By minimizing energy, the film can buckle into checkerboard patterns at the critical photo load. Fourier spectral method is applied to study the post-buckling evolution of various 3D wrinkling patterns including wavy shaped, ring-like, checkerboard, stripe and herringbone patterns. Besides, non-uniform illumination is investigated through square and circular patterned lights, respectively, where the wrinkles can be ordered and controlled remotely and flexibly. Furthermore, the geometric and size effects of local illumination are discussed and characterized by some critical dimensionless parameters. Phase diagrams are provided and agree with experimental observations, which could be used to guide the photo design of wrinkling morphogenesis that is particularly attractive for remote control applications. Abstract:Photodegradable polymers constitute an emerging class of materials that are expected to possess advances in the areas of micro/nano- and biotechnology. Herein, we report a green and effective strategy to fabricate light-responsive surface micropatterns by taking advantage of photodegradation chemistry. Thanks to the molecular chain breakage during the photolysis process, the stress field of photodegradable polymer-based wrinkling systems undergoes continuous disturbance, leading to the release/reorganization of the internal stress. Revealed by systematic experiments, the light-induced stress release mechanism enables the dynamic adaption of not only thermal-induced labyrinth wrinkles, but uniaxially oriented wrinkle microstructures induced by mechanical straining. This method paves the way for their diverse applications, for example, in optical information display and storage, and the smart fabrication of multifunctional surfaces as demonstrated here.

Abstract:Smart soft materials, because of their mechanical flexibility and quick response to multi-physics stimuli, have drawn considerable attention over the past few years. Here, we present controllable wrinkling patterns of a liquid crystal polymer film attached on a soft substrate, controlled by laser illumination that holds unique optical characteristics of high coherence and irradiance. To analyze the mechanical response of liquid crystal polymer film/substrate systems under laser illumination, we develop a mathematical model by introducing laser-induced strain that has continuous Gaussian distribution, into the Föppl–von Kármán nonlinear plate theory. We explore effects of photo illumination areas and light-induced bending moments on pattern formation and selection, and discuss the inherent difference compared with uniform illumination. We find that the critical wrinkling strain is independent of laser decay distance, while pattern formation and pattern evolution are primarily determined by this parameter and the half width of laser irradiation. Novel wrinkling patterns, including horseshoe-shaped and spiral modes, are observed upon laser illumination. Furthermore, we provide phase diagrams on pattern selection and bifurcation diagrams on pattern evolution, which could quantitatively guide the effective design of multi-functional surfaces and precisely remote control of diverse surface morphology.
Light‐Induced in Situ Dynamic Ordered Wrinkling with Arbitrarily Tailorable Wrinkling Orientation for Photoresponsive Soft Photonics

Abstract:Spontaneous surface wrinkling provides a simple universal approach to pattern surfaces for a new generation of smart systems. Dynamic programmable manipulation of surface wrinkling especially with on-demand wrinkling orientation is highly required yet remains a great challenge. Here, an intriguing azopolymer-based system with a novel polarization-responsive dynamic oriented wrinkling behavior is reported. During a linearly polarized light illumination, in situ dynamic aligned wrinkling is induced with the wrinkling orientation perpendicular to the polarization direction, irrespective of as-imposed boundaries. This polarization-dependent dynamic wrinkling is attributed to the polarized light-induced photo-orientation of azopolymer. This fascinating polarization-dependent dynamic wrinkling characteristic offers a desirable platform to fabricate unprecedented all-optically reconfigurable hierarchical wrinkling morphologies with arbitrarily tailorable wrinkling orientation and location. As demonstrated, the polarization-responsive dynamic wrinkling system has wide applications for photoresponsive soft photonics, in particular as an adoptable nonmechanical beam steering device to differentiate/manipulate light propagation in the case of different incident light polarizations/wavelengths/intensities.
Tuning and Erasing Surface Wrinkles by Reversible Visible‐Light‐Induced Photoisomerization

Abstract:Periodic wrinkling across different scales has received considerable attention because it not only represents structure failure but also finds wide applications. How to prevent wrinkling or create desired wrinkling patterns is non-trivial because the dynamic evolution of wrinkles is a highly nonlinear problem. Herein, we report a simple yet powerful method to dynamically tune and/or erase wrinkling patterns with visible light. The light-induced photoisomerization of azobenzene units in azopolymer films leads to stress release and consequently to the erasure of the wrinkles. The wrinkles in unexposed regions are also affected and oriented perpendicular to the exposed boundary during the stress reorganization. Theoretical models were developed to understand the dynamics of the reversible photoisomerization-induced wrinkle evolution. This method can be applied for designing functional materials/devices, for example, for the reversible optical writing/erasure of information as demonstrated here.

Abstract:Mechanical instability has been shown to play an important role in the formation of wrinkle structures in biofilms, which not only can adopt instability modes as templates to regulate their 3D architectures but also can tune internal stresses to achieve stable patterns. Inspired by nature, we report a mechanical-chemical coupling method to fabricate free-standing conducting films with instability-driven hierarchical micro/nanostructured patterns. When polypyrrole (PPy) film is grown on an elastic substrate via chemical oxidation polymerization, differential growth along with in situ self-reinforcing effect induces stable wrinkle patterns with different scales of wavelengths. The self-reinforcing effect modifies the internal stresses, hence PPy films with intact wrinkles can be removed from substrates and further transferred onto target substrates for functional device fabrication. To understand the buckling mechanics, we construct a model which reveals the formation of hierarchical wrinkle patterns.

Abstract:Constructing wrinkles by utilizing strain-driven surface instability in film-substrate systems is a general method to prepare micronano structures, which have a wide range of applications in smart surfaces and devices such as flexible electronics, reversible wetting, friction, and optics. However, cracks generated during the preparation and use process significantly affect the uniformity of wrinkled surfaces and degrade the functional properties of the film devices. The realization of crack-free wrinkles with high stretchability in hard film systems is still a great challenge. Here, we report on a facile technique for controllable preparation of large-area, highly stretchable, crack-free wrinkled surfaces by ultraviolet ozone (UVO) treatment of Ecoflex. The thickness dependence of the wrinkles and the in situ wrinkling process during mechanical loading are investigated. The wrinkles including striped, labyrinth-like, herringbone, and transitional structures are controllable by changing strain mode (uniaxial or biaxial), loading history (simultaneous or sequential), strain anisotropy, and gradient loading. The wrinkled surfaces obtained using UVO-treated Ecoflex have tunable wetting and optical properties and can maintain excellent mechanical stability under large strains. This study provides a facile method for the preparation of large-area, crack-free wrinkles, which is simple, fast, low-cost, and robust. The resulting wrinkled surfaces remain stable under high stretching, which is beneficial for many practical applications, especially in the cases of large strains.

Abstract:Controllable wrinkle structures have great application prospects in the fields of flexible electronics, smart sensing, elastic optics, surface wetting, and bio-interfaces. In flexible film-substrate systems, strain actuation is capable of obtaining various wrinkle patterns with single morphological features including labyrinths, herringbones, stripes, hierarchies and ordered arrays. However, it is still a big challenge to obtain multiple wrinkle patterns on a surface of film simultaneously. Here, we propose a facile method for preparing controllable multimode wrinkles by exerting three-axial compression. The morphological features of the wrinkles show a universal position-dependent behavior for different flexible film systems. From a corner of the triangular film sample to the opposite edge, the wrinkles evolve from striped structure to labyrinth-like structure and finally to rippled structure gradually. The finite element simulation and stress theory well explain the formation mechanism and evolution behavior of the multimode wrinkles observed in experiments. The surface friction and light diffraction are strongly dependent on the wrinkle features and show excellent reversibility and stability by cyclic mechanical loading. This work can promote better understanding of stress distribution and wrinkling mechanism under three-axial mechanical loading, and can develop a novel technique for preparing controllable multiple, position-dependent wrinkle patterns.

Abstract:Inspired by the superglue fuming method for fingerprint collection, this study developed a novel interfacial‐fuming‐induced surface instability process to generate wrinkled patterns on polymeric substrates. The aforementioned technique can be easily applied to architectures with complex outer morphologies and inner surfaces, thereby enabling the construction of surface patterns under ambient conditions without vacuum limitations or precise process control. Inspired by the superglue fuming method for fingerprint collection, this study developed a novel interfacial‐fuming‐induced surface instability process to generate wrinkled patterns on polymeric substrates. High‐electronegativity groups are introduced on the substrate surface to initiate the polymerization of monomer vapors, such as ethyl cyanoacrylate, which results in the formation of a stiff poly(ethyl cyanoacrylate) capping layer. Moreover, interfacial polymerization resulted in the covalent bonding of the substrate, which led to the volumetric shrinkage of the composite and the accumulation of compressive strain. This process ultimately resulted in the development and stabilization of wrinkled surface morphologies. The authors systematically examined parameters such as the modulus of the epoxy substrate, prestrain, the flow rate of fuming, and operating temperature. The aforementioned technique can be easily applied to architectures with complex outer morphologies and inner surfaces, thereby enabling the construction of surface patterns under ambient conditions without vacuum limitations or precise process control. This study is the first to combine fuming‐induced interfacial polymerization with surface instability to create robust wrinkles. The proposed method enables the fabrication of intricate microwrinkled patterns and has considerable potential for use in various practical applications, including microfluidics, optical components, bioinspired adhesive devices, and interfacial engineering.

Abstract:Ubiquitous surface wrinkling has been well studied theoretically and experimentally. How to modulate the stress state of a liquid-supported system for the unexploited wrinkling capabilities remains a challenge. Here we report a simple linearly-polarized-light illumination to spatiotemporally trigger ultrasensitive in-situ dynamic wrinkling on a floating azo-film. The smart combination of the liquid substrate with photoresponsive azo-moieties leads to the light-induced ultrafast wrinkling evolution, accompanied by unprecedented sequential wrinkling orientation conversion (from polarization-parallel to polarization-perpendicular). The involved different polarization-dependent sequential photo-orientation for azo side chains and azo-grafted main chains of azopolymers is disclosed experimentally for the first time. Meanwhile, programmable dynamic wrinkling with all-optical switchable surface topographies is available, which has wide application potentials in photoresponsive soft photonics.

Abstract:Surface wrinkling of materials holds promise for important applications in diverse fields such as multifunctional surfaces and biomedical engineering. For these applications, it is of interest to attain various surface wrinkles with tunable wavelengths and amplitudes. Through a combination of experiments and numerical simulations, we here propose a method to regulate the wrinkling patterns in a film-substrate system by introducing periodic surface stiffness, which is generated through sequential specified ultraviolet-ozone (UVO) treatments. Both experiments and numerical simulations demonstrate that the proposed technique can produce various patterns with wide, tunable geometrical features and anisotropy. The effects of surface stiffness distribution, the exposure durations of UVO-treatments, and the loading biaxiality are examined on the generated surface patterns.

Abstract:<p>Spontaneous wrinkled surfaces in nature usually possess unique physical and chemical properties. Inspired by nature and stimulated by practical application, artificial wrinkle patterns have received increasing interest recently. Here, the controllable heterogeneous wrinkles in metal films deposited on polydimethylsiloxane substrates by combination of mechanical loading and heat treatment is reported. It is found that the wrinkles are spontaneously localized at small strain condition due to the uneven distribution of wrinkle amplitudes on the film surface. The morphological features and underlying mechanisms of such wrinkles are investigated based on the strain theory. The friction property is found to be well controlled by the aspect ratio and orientation of the wrinkle patterns. Complex 2D wrinkle array is also achieved by applying heat treatment and mechanical compression in sequence. This study may broaden the knowledge of spontaneous heterogeneous wrinkles in film‐substrate system and provide a novel way to tailor various wrinkle patterns via independently tuning annealing temperature and mechanical strain.</p>

Abstract:Strain-induced complex surface patterns such as wrinkles, folds and hierarchical structures are quite useful in a wide range of practical applications. Although various surface patterns have been extensively investigated, precisely controlling the coexistence and transition of multimodal structures is still a challenge. In this work, we report on a facile technique to harness fold-to-wrinkle transition and hierarchical wrinkling on soft material surfaces by regulating substrate stiffness and sputtering flux. It is found that as the substrate stiffness or sputtering flux increases, the surface patterns successively evolve from networked folds to isolated folds (coexistence of folds and wrinkles) and finally to labyrinth-like wrinkles. For larger sputtering flux, two distinct wrinkling patterns (i.e., G1 wrinkling due to surface instability during sputtering and G2 wrinkling due to thermal compression after deposition) can coexist on the sample surfaces, resulting in the spontaneous formation of hierarchical wrinkles. The report in this work could promote better understanding of the sputtering effect on the spontaneous pattern formation for soft materials and controllable fabrication of multiple complex patterns by simply regulating substrate stiffness and sputtering flux.

We randomly selected a subcohort (n = 2,500) from 26,444 participants, of whom 1,962 were diabetes free at baseline. Of the 801 incident type 2 diabetes cases identified in the cohort during 7 years of follow-up, 579 remained for analyses after exclusions. Prediction models were compared by receiver operatoring characteristic (ROC) curve and integrated discrimination improvement. RESULTS Case-control discrimination by the lifestyle characteristics (ROC-AUC: 0.8465) improved with plasma glucose (ROC-AUC: 0.8672, P < 0.001) and A1C (ROC-AUC: 0.8859, P < 0.001). ROC-AUC further improved with HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, γ-glutamyltransferase, and alanine aminotransferase (0.9000, P = 0.002). Twenty SNPs did not improve discrimination beyond these characteristics (P = 0.69). CONCLUSIONS Metabolic markers, but not genotyping for 20 diabetogenic SNPs, improve discrimination of incident type 2 diabetes beyond lifestyle risk factors.
Surface Wrinkling Patterns of Film–Substrate Systems with a Structured Interface

Abstract:Wrinkling of thin films resting on compliant substrates has emerged as a facile means to create well-ordered surface patterns. In this paper, both theoretical analysis and numerical simulations are presented to study the surface wrinkling of a film–substrate system with periodic interfacial structures. It is demonstrated that a variety of novel surface wrinkling patterns can be generated through the introduction of interfacial architectures. These surface patterns can be easily tuned by adjusting two geometric parameters: the lengths of the thin films in the thick and the thin regions. A phase diagram is established for the onset of different wrinkling morphologies with respect to the two geometric dimensions. This study offers a promising route for engineering the surfaces of materials endowed with tunable properties and functions.

Abstract:<p>A versatile wrinkle‐based micropatterned system with a film‐substrate structure is proposed, which contains a hydrophilic film of polyvinyl alcohol or its composite with laponite and a hydrophobic substrate of polydimethylsiloxane or its composite with carbon black. The wrinkled system features high design flexibility and multistimuli responsiveness, which can be activated by various mechanical methods, including vertical press or scratch, gentle stretch‐and‐release, bend, or analogous magneto‐mechanical and electro‐mechanical modes. The resultant wrinkles possess 1) instantaneous and reversible strain/moisture/light responsive optical modulation; 2) tunable dynamics for the aforementioned strain/moisture/light response;3) tailorable amplitude/wavelength; 4) unique surface morphologies from the coupling of wrinkles and cracks; 5) excellent reversibility and durability. A variety of applications are demonstrated based on this system, including 1) a moisture erasable highly sensitive pressure responsive device and pattern replicator with a high fidelity; 2) a moisture erasable scratch/magneto‐mechanical re‐writable tablet; 3) an electro‐mechanical controllable smart window with an ultra‐sensitive strain responsive transmittance modulation and a low operating voltage; 4) various types of strain responsive, moisture erasable, and laser writable information recording/encryption devices. This work provides new routes for designing innovative wrinkled systems triggered by diverse mechanical fashions and can decode multiple environmental stimuli into optical signals for widespread application.</p>
