Abstract:The diagnosis and surgical resection using Magnetic Resonance (MR) images in brain tumors is a challenging task to minimize the neurological defects after surgery owing to the non-linear nature of the size, shape, and textural variation. Radiologists, clinical experts, and brain surgeons examine brain MRI scans using the available methods, which are tedious, error-prone, time-consuming, and still exhibit positional accuracy up to 2–3 mm, which is very high in the case of brain cells. In this context, we propose an automated Ultra-Light Brain Tumor Detection (UL-BTD) system based on a novel Ultra-Light Deep Learning Architecture (UL-DLA) for deep features, integrated with highly distinctive textural features, extracted by Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM). It forms a Hybrid Feature Space (HFS), which is used for tumor detection using Support Vector Machine (SVM), culminating in high prediction accuracy and optimum false negatives with limited network size to fit within the average GPU resources of a modern PC system. The objective of this study is to categorize multi-class publicly available MRI brain tumor datasets with a minimum time thus real-time tumor detection can be carried out without compromising accuracy. Our proposed framework includes a sensitivity analysis of image size, One-versus-All and One-versus-One coding schemes with stringent efforts to assess the complexity and reliability performance of the proposed system with K-fold cross-validation as a part of the evaluation protocol. The best generalization achieved using SVM has an average detection rate of 99.23% (99.18%, 98.86%, and 99.67%), and F-measure of 0.99 (0.99, 0.98, and 0.99) for (glioma, meningioma, and pituitary tumors), respectively. Our results have been found to improve the state-of-the-art (97.30%) by 2%, indicating that the system exhibits capability for translation in modern hospitals during real-time surgical brain applications. The method needs 11.69 ms with an accuracy of 99.23% compared to 15 ms achieved by the state-of-the-art to earlier to detect tumors on a test image without any dedicated hardware providing a route for a desktop application in brain surgery.

Abstract:Glioma is the most common primary central nervous system tumor, accounting for about half of all intracranial primary tumors. As a non-invasive examination method, MRI has an extremely important guiding role in the clinical intervention of tumors. However, manually segmenting brain tumors from MRI requires a lot of time and energy for doctors, which affects the implementation of follow-up diagnosis and treatment plans. With the development of deep learning, medical image segmentation is gradually automated. However, brain tumors are easily confused with strokes and serious imbalances between classes make brain tumor segmentation one of the most difficult tasks in MRI segmentation. In order to solve these problems, we propose a deep multi-task learning framework and integrate a multi-depth fusion module in the framework to accurately segment brain tumors. In this framework, we have added a distance transform decoder based on the V-Net, which can make the segmentation contour generated by the mask decoder more accurate and reduce the generation of rough boundaries. In order to combine the different tasks of the two decoders, we weighted and added their corresponding loss functions, where the distance map prediction regularized the mask prediction. At the same time, the multi-depth fusion module in the encoder can enhance the ability of the network to extract features. The accuracy of the model will be evaluated online using the multispectral MRI records of the BraTS 2018, BraTS 2019, and BraTS 2020 datasets. This method obtains high-quality segmentation results, and the average Dice is as high as 78%. The experimental results show that this model has great potential in segmenting brain tumors automatically and accurately.

Abstract:A correct diagnosis of brain tumours is crucial to making an accurate treatment plan for patients with the disease and allowing them to live a long and healthy life. Among a few clinical imaging modalities, attractive reverberation imaging gives extra different data about the tissues. The use of MRI-Magnetic Resonance Imaging tests is a significant method for identifying disorders throughout the human body. Deep learning provides a solution for efficiently detecting Brain Tumour. The work has used MRI images for predicting the glioblastoma of brain tumours. Initially, data is retrieved from hospitals in form of an image database to continue with the brain tumour prediction. Pre-processing of dataset images is a mandatory step to enhance the accuracy and smooth line supplementary stages. The intensity value of each MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is subtracted by the mean intensity value and standard deviation of the brain region. Further, reduce the medical image noise by employing a bilateral filter. Further, the preprocessed medical images are used for extracting the radiomics features from images as well as tumour segmentation. Thus the work adopts the tumor is automatically segmented into four compartments using mutually exclusive rules using Modified Fuzzy C Means Clustering (MFCM). The clustering-based approach is very beneficial in MR tumour segmentation; it categorizes the pixels using certain radiomics features. The most important problem in the radiomics-based machine learning model is the dimension of data. Moreover, using a GWO (Grey Wolf Optimizer) with rough set theory, we propose a novel dimensionality reduction algorithm. This method is employed to find the significant features from the extracted images and differentiate HG (high-grade) and LG (Low-grade) from GBM while varying feature correlation limits were applied to remove redundant features. Finally, the article proposed the dynamic architecture of Multilevel Layer modelling in Faster R-CNN (MLL-CNN) approach based on feature weight factor and relative description model to build the selected features. This reduces the overall computation and performs long-tailed classification. This results in the development of CNN training performance more accurate. Results show that the general endurance expectation of GBM cerebrum growth with more prominent exactness of about 95% with the decreased blunder rate to be 2.3%. In the calculation of similarity between segmented tissues and ground truth, different tools produce correspondingly different predictions.

Abstract:Glioma is a kind of brain tumor that can arise at a distinct location along with dissimilar appearance and size. The high-grade glioma (HGG) is a serious kind of cancer when compare to low-graded glioma (LGG). The manual diagnosis process of these tumors is tiring and time consuming. Therefore, in clinical practices, MRI is useful to assess gliomas as it provides essential information of tumor regions. In this manuscript, an active deep learning-based feature selection approach is suggested to segment and recognize brain tumors. Contrast enhancement is made in the primary step and supplied to SbDL for saliency map construction, which later converts into binarized form by applying simple thresholding. In the classification phase, the Inception V3 pre-trained CNN model is employed for deep feature extraction. These features are simply concatenated along with dominant rotated LBP (DRLBP) for better texture analysis. Later, the concatenated vector is optimized through particle swarm optimization (PSO), so as to classify using softmax classifier. The experiments are conducted in two phases. At first, the segmentation approach SbDL is validated on BRATS2017 and BRATS2018 datasets. The achieved dice score for the BRAST2017 dataset is 83.73% for core tumor, 93.7% for the whole tumor and 79.94% for enhanced tumor. For BRATS2018 dataset, dice score obtained is 88.34% (core), 91.2% (whole) and 81.84% (enhanced). At the second, the classification strategy is applied on BRATS2013, 2014, 2017 and 2018 with an average accuracy of more than 92%. The overall results show that the presented method outperforms for both segmentation and classification of brain tumors.

Abstract:Brain tumors are one of the deadliest forms of cancer with a mortality rate of over 80%. A quick and accurate diagnosis is crucial to increase the chance of survival. However, in medical analysis, the manual annotation and segmentation of a brain tumor can be a complicated task. Multiple MRI modalities are typically analyzed as they provide unique information regarding the tumor regions. Although these MRI modalities are helpful for segmenting gliomas, they tend to increase overfitting and computation. This paper proposes a region of interest detection algorithm that is implemented during data preprocessing to locate salient features and remove extraneous MRI data. This decreases the input size, allowing for more aggressive data augmentations and deeper neural networks. Following the preprocessing of the MRI modalities, a fully convolutional autoencoder with soft attention segments the different brain MRIs. When these deep learning algorithms are implemented in practice, analysts and physicians cannot differentiate between accurate and inaccurate predictions. Subsequently, test time augmentations and an energy-based model were used for voxel-based uncertainty predictions. Experimentation was conducted on the BraTS benchmarks and achieved state-of-the-art segmentation performance. Additionally, qualitative results were used to assess the segmentation models and uncertainty predictions.

Abstract:Brain tumor diagnosis using MRI scans poses significant challenges due to the complex nature of tumor appearances and variations. Traditional methods often require extensive manual intervention and are prone to human error, leading to misdiagnosis and delayed treatment. Current approaches primarily include manual examination by radiologists and conventional machine learning techniques. These methods rely heavily on feature extraction and classification algorithms, which may not capture the intricate patterns present in brain MRI images. Conventional techniques often suffer from limited accuracy and generalizability, mainly due to the high variability in tumor appearance and the subjective nature of manual interpretation. Additionally, traditional machine learning models may struggle with the high-dimensional data inherent in MRI images. To address these limitations, our research introduces a deep learning-based model utilizing convolutional neural networks (CNNs).Our model employs a sequential CNN architecture with multiple convolutional, max-pooling, and dropout layers, followed by dense layers for classification. The proposed model demonstrates a significant improvement in diagnostic accuracy, achieving an overall accuracy of 98% on the test dataset. The precision, recall, and F1-scores ranging from 97 to 98% with a roc-auc ranging from 99 to 100% for each tumor category further substantiate the model's effectiveness. This research addresses the pressing need for enhanced diagnostic accuracy in identifying brain tumors through MRI imaging, tackling challenges such as variability in tumor appearance and the need for rapid, reliable diagnostic tools.

Abstract:One of the deadliest diseases in the world is brain cancer. Children and adults are also susceptible to this malignancy. It also has the poorest rate of survival and comes in a variety of shapes, textures, and sizes, depending on where it is found. Bad things will happen if the tumour brain is misclassified. As a reason, early detection of the right kind and grade of tumour is critical in determining the best treatment strategy. Brain tumours may be identified by looking at magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) pictures of the patient's brain. The manual method becomes time-consuming and may lead to human mistakes due to the huge quantities of data and the different kinds of brain tumours. As a result, a computer-assisted diagnostic (CAD) system is needed. Image categorization methods have advanced significantly in recent years, particularly deep learning networks, which have achieved success in this field. In this case, we used a multilayer stacked probabilistic belief network to accurately classify brain tumors. Here the MRI brain images are Pre-processed using the Hybrid Butter worth Anisotropic filter and contrast Blow up Histogram Equalization. Followed by pre-processing, the denoised image can be segmented by using the bounding box U-NET segmentation methodology. Then after segmenting the target, the specialized features regarding the tumor can be extracted using the In-depth atom embedding method. Then they obtained can reduce feature dimensionality by using the Backward feature eliminating green wing optimization. The extracted features can be given as input for the classification process. A Multilayer stacked probabilistic belief network is then used to classify the tumour as malignant or benign. The suggested system's efficacy was tested on the BraTS dataset, which yielded a high level of accuracy. Subjective comparison study is also performed out among the suggested technique and certain state-of-the-art methods, according to the work presented. Experiments show that the proposed system outperforms current methods in terms of assisting radiologists in identifying the size, shape, and location of tumors in the human brain.

Abstract:Gliomas are the most common primary brain malignancies. Accurate and robust tumor segmentation and prediction of patients' overall survival are important for diagnosis, treatment planning and risk factor identification. Here we present a deep learning-based framework for brain tumor segmentation and survival prediction in glioma, using multimodal MRI scans. For tumor segmentation, we use ensembles of three different 3D CNN architectures for robust performance through a majority rule. This approach can effectively reduce model bias and boost performance. For survival prediction, we extract 4,524 radiomic features from segmented tumor regions, then, a decision tree and cross validation are used to select potent features. Finally, a random forest model is trained to predict the overall survival of patients. The 2018 MICCAI Multimodal Brain Tumor Segmentation Challenge (BraTS), ranks our method at 2nd and 5th place out of 60+ participating teams for survival prediction tasks and segmentation tasks respectively, achieving a promising 61.0% accuracy on the classification of short-survivors, mid-survivors and long-survivors.

Abstract:Brain tumor analysis is essential to the timely diagnosis and effective treatment of patients. Tumor analysis is challenging because of tumor morphology factors like size, location, texture, and heteromorphic appearance in medical images. In this regard, a novel two-phase deep learning-based framework is proposed to detect and categorize brain tumors in magnetic resonance images (MRIs). In the first phase, a novel deep-boosted features space and ensemble classifiers (DBFS-EC) scheme is proposed to effectively detect tumor MRI images from healthy individuals. The deep-boosted feature space is achieved through customized and well-performing deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs), and consequently, fed into the ensemble of machine learning (ML) classifiers. While in the second phase, a new hybrid features fusion-based brain-tumor classification approach is proposed, comprised of both static and dynamic features with an ML classifier to categorize different tumor types. The dynamic features are extracted from the proposed brain region-edge net (BRAIN-RENet) CNN, which is able to learn the heteromorphic and inconsistent behavior of various tumors. In contrast, the static features are extracted by using a histogram of gradients (HOG) feature descriptor. The effectiveness of the proposed two-phase brain tumor analysis framework is validated on two standard benchmark datasets, which were collected from Kaggle and Figshare and contain different types of tumors, including glioma, meningioma, pituitary, and normal images. Experimental results suggest that the proposed DBFS-EC detection scheme outperforms the standard and achieved accuracy (99.56%), precision (0.9991), recall (0.9899), F1-Score (0.9945), MCC (0.9892), and AUC-PR (0.9990). The classification scheme, based on the fusion of feature spaces of proposed BRAIN-RENet and HOG, outperform state-of-the-art methods significantly in terms of recall (0.9913), precision (0.9906), accuracy (99.20%), and F1-Score (0.9909) in the CE-MRI dataset.

Abstract:Early diagnosis of brain tumors is critical for enhancing patient prognosis and treatment options, while accurate classification and segmentation of brain tumors are vital for developing personalized treatment strategies. Despite the widespread use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) for brain examination and advances in AI-based detection methods, building an accurate and efficient model for detecting and categorizing tumors from MRI images remains a challenge. To address this problem, we proposed a deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based architecture for automatic brain image classification into four classes and a U-Net-based segmentation model. Using six benchmarked datasets, we tested the classification model and trained the segmentation model, enabling side-by-side comparison of the impact of segmentation on tumor classification in brain MRI images. We also evaluated two classification methods based on accuracy, recall, precision, and AUC. Our developed novel deep learning-based model for brain tumor classification and segmentation outperforms existing pre-trained models across all six datasets. The results demonstrate that our classification model achieved the highest accuracy of 98.7% in a merged dataset and 98.8% with the segmentation approach, with the highest classification accuracy reaching 97.7% among the four individual datasets. Thus, this novel framework could be applicable in clinics for the automatic identification and segmentation of brain tumors utilizing MRI scan input images.

Abstract:Glioma is the most deadly brain tumor with high mortality. Treatment planning by human experts depends on the proper diagnosis of physical symptoms along with Magnetic Resonance(MR) image analysis. Highly variability of a brain tumor in terms of size, shape, location, and a high volume of MR images makes the analysis time-consuming. Automatic segmentation methods achieve a reduction in time with excellent reproducible results. The article aims to survey the advancement of automated methods for Glioma brain tumor segmentation. It is also essential to make an objective evaluation of various models based on the benchmark. Therefore, the 2012 - 2019 BraTS challenges database evaluates state-of-the-art methods. The complexity of tasks under the challenge has grown from segmentation (Task1) to overall survival prediction (Task 2) to uncertainty prediction for classification (Task 3). The paper covers the complete gamut of brain tumor segmentation using handcrafted features to deep neural network models for Task 1. The aim is to showcase a complete change of trends in automated brain tumor models. The paper also covers end to end joint models involving brain tumor segmentation and overall survival prediction. All the methods are probed, and parameters that affect performance are tabulated and analyzed.

Abstract:Rapid and uncontrolled cellular proliferation is what distinguishes a brain tumor. Unfortunately, brain tumors cannot be prevented other than via surgery. As predicted, deep learning may help diagnose and cure brain cancers. The segmentation approach has been widely studied for brain tumor removal. This uses the segmentation approach, one of the most advanced methods for object detection and categorization. To efficiently assess the tumor's size, an accurate and automated brain tumor segmentation approach is needed. We present a fully automated brain tumor separation method for imaging investigations. The approach has been developed with convolutional neural networks. The Multimodal Brain Tumor Image Segmentation (BRATS) datasets tested our strategy. This result suggests that DL should investigate heterogeneous MRI image segmentation to improve brain tumor segmentation accuracy and efficacy. This study may lead to more accurate medical diagnoses and treatments. Researchers in this study also found a way to automatically find cancerous tumours by using the Grey Level Co-Occurrence Matrix (GLCM) and discrete wavelet transform (DWT) to find features in MRI images. They then used a CNN to guess the final prognosis. The preceding section details this technique. When compared to the other algorithm, the CNN method uses computer resources better.
ContourTL-Net: Contour-Based Transfer Learning Algorithm for Early-Stage Brain Tumor Detection

Abstract:Brain tumors are critical neurological ailments caused by uncontrolled cell growth in the brain or skull, often leading to death. An increasing patient longevity rate requires prompt detection; however, the complexities of brain tissue make early diagnosis challenging. Hence, automated tools are necessary to aid healthcare professionals. This study is particularly aimed at improving the efficacy of computerized brain tumor detection in a clinical setting through a deep learning model. Hence, a novel thresholding-based MRI image segmentation approach with a transfer learning model based on contour (ContourTL-Net) is suggested to facilitate the clinical detection of brain malignancies at an initial phase. The model utilizes contour-based analysis, which is critical for object detection, precise segmentation, and capturing subtle variations in tumor morphology. The model employs a VGG-16 architecture priorly trained on the "ImageNet" collection for feature extraction and categorization. The model is designed to utilize its ten nontrainable and three trainable convolutional layers and three dropout layers. The proposed ContourTL-Net model is evaluated on two benchmark datasets in four ways, among which an unseen case is considered as the clinical aspect. Validating a deep learning model on unseen data is crucial to determine the model's generalization capability, domain adaptation, robustness, and real-world applicability. Here, the presented model's outcomes demonstrate a highly accurate classification of the unseen data, achieving a perfect sensitivity and negative predictive value (NPV) of 100%, 98.60% specificity, 99.12% precision, 99.56% F1-score, and 99.46% accuracy. Additionally, the outcomes of the suggested model are compared with state-of-the-art methodologies to further enhance its effectiveness. The proposed solution outperforms the existing solutions in both seen and unseen data, with the potential to significantly improve brain tumor detection efficiency and accuracy, leading to earlier diagnoses and improved patient outcomes.

Abstract:Uncontrolled cell division in the brain is what gives rise to brain tumors. If the tumor size increases by more than half, there is little hope for the patient's recovery. This emphasizes the need of rapid and precise brain tumor diagnosis. When it comes to analyzing, diagnosing, and planning therapy for brain tumors, MRI imaging plays a crucial role. A brain tumor's development history is crucial information for doctors to have. When it comes to distinguishing between human soft tissues, MRI scans are superior. In order to get reliable classification results from MRI scans quickly, deep learning is one of the most practical methods. Early human illness diagnosis has been demonstrated to be more accurate when deep learning methods are used. In the case of diagnosing a brain tumor, when even a little misdiagnosis might have serious consequences, accuracy is especially important. Disclosure of brain tumors in medical images is still a difficult task. Brain MRIs are notoriously imprecise in revealing the presence or absence of tumors. Using MRI scans of the brain, a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) was trained to identify the presence of a tumor in this research. Results from the CNN model showed an accuracy of 99.17%. The CNN model's characteristics were also retrieved. In order to evaluate the CNN model's capability for processing images, we applied the features via the following machine learning models: KNN, Logistic regression, SVM, Random Forest, Naive Bayes, and Perception. CNN and machine learning models were also evaluated using the standard metrics of Precision, Recall, Specificity, and F1 score. The significance of the doctor's diagnosis enhanced the accuracy of the CNN model's assistance in identifying the existence of tumor and treating the patient.

Abstract:With the quick evolution of medical technology, the era of big data in medicine is quickly approaching. The analysis and mining of these data significantly influence the prediction, monitoring, diagnosis, and treatment of tumor disorders. Since it has a wide range of traits, a low survival rate, and an aggressive nature, brain tumor is regarded as the deadliest and most devastating disease. Misdiagnosed brain tumors lead to inadequate medical treatment, reducing the patient's life chances. Brain tumor detection is highly challenging due to the capacity to distinguish between aberrant and normal tissues. Effective therapy and long-term survival are made possible for the patient by a correct diagnosis. Despite extensive research, there are still certain limitations in detecting brain tumors because of the unusual distribution pattern of the lesions. Finding a region with a small number of lesions can be difficult because small areas tend to look healthy. It directly reduces the classification accuracy, and extracting and choosing informative features is challenging. A significant role is played by automatically classifying early-stage brain tumors utilizing deep and machine learning approaches. This paper proposes a hybrid deep learning model Convolutional Neural Network-Long Short Term Memory (CNN-LSTM) for classifying and predicting brain tumors through Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI). We experiment on an MRI brain image dataset. First, the data is preprocessed efficiently, and then, the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is applied to extract the significant features from images. The proposed model predicts the brain tumor with a significant classification accuracy of 99.1%, a precision of 98.8%, recall of 98.9%, and F1-measure of 99.0%.

Abstract:Neuroscience is a swiftly progressing discipline that aims to unravel the intricate workings of the human brain and mind. Brain tumors, ranging from non-cancerous to malignant forms, pose a significant diagnostic challenge due to the presence of more than 100 distinct types. Effective treatment hinges on the precise detection and segmentation of these tumors early. We introduce a cutting-edge deep-learning approach employing a binary convolutional neural network (BCNN) to address this. This method is employed to segment the 10 most prevalent brain tumor types and is a significant improvement over current models restricted to only segmenting four types. Our methodology begins with acquiring MRI images, followed by a detailed preprocessing stage where images undergo binary conversion using an adaptive thresholding method and morphological operations. This prepares the data for the next step, which is segmentation. The segmentation identifies the tumor type and classifies it according to its grade (Grade I to Grade IV) and differentiates it from healthy brain tissue. We also curated a unique dataset comprising 6,600 brain MRI images specifically for this study. The overall performance achieved by our proposed model is 99.36%. The effectiveness of our model is underscored by its remarkable performance metrics, achieving 99.40% accuracy, 99.32% precision, 99.45% recall, and a 99.28% F-Measure in segmentation tasks.

Abstract:Brain tumours (BT) affect human health owing to their location. Artificial intelligence (AI) is intended to assist in diagnosing and treating complex diseases by combining technologies like deep learning (DL), big data analytics, and machine learning (ML). AI can identify and categorize tumours by analyzing brain imaging approaches like Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The medical sector has been promptly shifted by evolving technology, and an essential element of these transformations is AI technology. AI model determines tumours' class, size, aggressiveness, and location. This assists medical doctors in making more exact diagnoses and treatment plans and helps patients better understand their health. Also, AI is used to track the progress of patients through treatment. AI-based analytics is used to predict potential tumour recurrence and assess treatment response. This study presents Brain Tumor Recognition using an Equilibrium Optimizer with a Deep Learning Approach (BTR-EODLA) technique for MRI images. The BTR-EODLA technique intends to recognize whether or not a BT presence exists. In the BTR-EODLA technique, median filtering (MF) is deployed to eliminate the noise in the input MRI. Besides, the squeeze-excitation ResNet (SE-ResNet50) model is applied to derive feature vectors, and its parameters are fine-tuned by the design of the EO model. The BTR-EODLA technique utilizes the stacked autoencoder (SAE) model for BT detection. A sequence of experiments is performed to ensure the improved performance of the BTR-EODLA technique. The investigational validation of the BTR-EODLA technique portrayed a superior accuracy value of 98.78% over existing models.

Abstract:Background: The necessity of prompt and accurate brain tumor diagnosis is unquestionable for optimizing treatment strategies and patient prognoses. Traditional reliance on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) analysis, contingent upon expert interpretation, grapples with challenges such as time-intensive processes and susceptibility to human error. Objective: This research presents a novel Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture designed to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of brain tumor detection in MRI scans. Methods: The dataset used in the study comprises 7,023 brain MRI images from figshare, SARTAJ, and Br35H, categorized into glioma, meningioma, no tumor, and pituitary classes, with a CNN-based multi-task classification model employed for tumor detection, classification, and location identification. Our methodology focused on multi-task classification using a single CNN model for various brain MRI classification tasks, including tumor detection, classification based on grade and type, and tumor location identification. Results: The proposed CNN model incorporates advanced feature extraction capabilities and deep learning optimization techniques, culminating in a groundbreaking paradigm shift in automated brain MRI analysis. With an exceptional tumor classification accuracy of 99%, our method surpasses current methodologies, demonstrating the remarkable potential of deep learning in medical applications. Conclusion: This study represents a significant advancement in the early detection and treatment planning of brain tumors, offering a more efficient and accurate alternative to traditional MRI analysis methods.

Abstract:Abstract Brain tumor localization and segmentation from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are hard and important tasks for several applications in the field of medical analysis. As each brain imaging modality gives unique and key details related to each part of the tumor, many recent approaches used four modalities T1, T1c, T2, and FLAIR. Although many of them obtained a promising segmentation result on the BRATS 2018 dataset, they suffer from a complex structure that needs more time to train and test. So, in this paper, to obtain a flexible and effective brain tumor segmentation system, first, we propose a preprocessing approach to work only on a small part of the image rather than the whole part of the image. This method leads to a decrease in computing time and overcomes the overfitting problems in a Cascade Deep Learning model. In the second step, as we are dealing with a smaller part of brain images in each slice, a simple and efficient Cascade Convolutional Neural Network (C-ConvNet/C-CNN) is proposed. This C-CNN model mines both local and global features in two different routes. Also, to improve the brain tumor segmentation accuracy compared with the state-of-the-art models, a novel Distance-Wise Attention (DWA) mechanism is introduced. The DWA mechanism considers the effect of the center location of the tumor and the brain inside the model. Comprehensive experiments are conducted on the BRATS 2018 dataset and show that the proposed model obtains competitive results: the proposed method achieves a mean whole tumor, enhancing tumor, and tumor core dice scores of 0.9203, 0.9113 and 0.8726 respectively. Other quantitative and qualitative assessments are presented and discussed.

Abstract:Automatic segmentation is essential for the brain tumor diagnosis, disease prognosis, and follow-up therapy of patients with gliomas. Still, accurate detection of gliomas and their sub-regions in multimodal MRI is very challenging due to the variety of scanners and imaging protocols. Over the last years, the BraTS Challenge has provided a large number of multi-institutional MRI scans as a benchmark for glioma segmentation algorithms. This paper describes our contribution to the BraTS 2022 Continuous Evaluation challenge. We propose a new ensemble of multiple deep learning frameworks namely, DeepSeg, nnU-Net, and DeepSCAN for automatic glioma boundaries detection in pre-operative MRI. It is worth noting that our ensemble models took first place in the final evaluation on the BraTS testing dataset with Dice scores of 0.9294, 0.8788, and 0.8803, and Hausdorf distance of 5.23, 13.54, and 12.05, for the whole tumor, tumor core, and enhancing tumor, respectively. Furthermore, the proposed ensemble method ranked first in the final ranking on another unseen test dataset, namely Sub-Saharan Africa dataset, achieving mean Dice scores of 0.9737, 0.9593, and 0.9022, and HD95 of 2.66, 1.72, 3.32 for the whole tumor, tumor core, and enhancing tumor, respectively.
