Abstract:Hippocrates' teaching on the ethical and moral values of medicine have captivated physicians, scholars, and historians for over twenty-five centuries, enduring despite the challenges of applying moral guidance across diverse cultures. At the core of Hippocratic ethics is the human relationship between the physician and the patient, with an emphasis on the physician's responsibility to assess potential harm involved in any attempt to heal. The Hippocratic principle "to help, or at least to do no harm" remains as relevant today as it was 2,500 years ago. In the modern context, it serves as a deontological imperative, reminding physicians to evaluate the risks of harm associated with any healing attempt. This concept aligns with the ethical principles of beneficence and non-maleficence, which are at the heart of Hippocratic medical ethics with timeless significance.

Abstract:The prevalence of intestinal parasites in domestic cats from the London area was surveyed over an 18-month period by microscopic examination of faecal samples. Of the 947 cats examined 11.5 per cent were infected with Toxocara cati, 1.9 per cent with Isospora felis, 1.2 per cent with Dipylidium caninum, 1.2 per cent with Taenia taeniaeformis, 0.8 per cent with I rivolta and 0.2 per cent with Toxascaris leonina.

Abstract:Social media is increasingly a part of our personal and professional life and is here to stay. Here, I reflect on issues surrounding the use of social media (SMU) in the digital health context by clinicians in Australian paediatric health care. I aim to briefly highlight some inherent multifactorial and contextual ethical considerations which mainly relate to professionalism; including boundaries, obligations to patients and families within the therapeutic alliance, and balancing the help, hype and harm of SMU in clinical practice. I conclude that digital health and SMU are ubiquitous, and can be beneficial if used circumspectly with Hippocratic principles that have been updated for the modern era and are grounded in ancient moral codes. Unfettered SMU however, without adherence to ethical and legal guidelines is problematic, and may expose patients, families and clinicians to significant risk of harm and moral vulnerability. Justifiable, explicit, consistent and regularly reviewed boundaries, both professional and personal, are ethically advisable. These should reflect, and adapt to, the rapidly evolving nature of social media as imprudent digital health and SMU without proportionate limits, may undermine still relevant Hippocratic tenets, and the primacy of doing no harm.

Abstract:The Hippocratic oath is traditionally taken by medical school graduates at the time of their graduation, either in its original form or in a modern variation. It is considered the earliest expression of medical ethics, establishing principles of ethics that remain of paramount significance today. However, it was written in antiquity, whereas medicine has been constantly evolving. Abstract:The Hippocratic Oath is a composite text that dates back thousands of years and has been rewritten many times. This text is still a key reference, both from a deontological point of view (because of the principles it promotes and the professional morality it defends) and from an ethical point of view (based on the precepts of the ancients, concerning the ethos of practitioners and the doctor-patient relationship). All medical doctors in France pronounce it at least once in their professional life, at the end of their PhD defense. Nevertheless, this text and this moment are sometimes judged to be outmoded or even outdated. Based on a philosophical methodology, paying attention to the contribution of human sciences, the aim of this article is to highlight how the Hippocratic Oath still enlightens us today, in the current context of paradigm shifts (the doctor-patient relationship, model of co-decision; contractualization; market logic, etc.) and multiple crises (health crises, resource constraints, wars, etc.). The result of this survey is that while medicine is both an art and a science the Oath does however, emphasize the humanist dimension of daily practice. That's why reading and pronouncing the Hippocratic Oath implies taking an interest not only in understanding its deeper meaning and spirit beyond the letter of the text, but also in what we wish to pass on to future generations in terms of key ethical references.

Abstract:Physicians have been taking the Hippocratic Oath for centuries. The Oath contains a set of ethical rules designed to guide physicians through their profession; it articulates a set of true north principles that govern the practice of medicine. The Hippocratic Oath has undergone several revisions, most notably in 1948 by the World Medical Association. However, in an era of rapid change in medicine, we believe it is time to update the Oath with modest but meaningful additions so that it optimally reflects 21st century health care. The rise of digital health has dramatically changed the practice of medicine in a way that could not have been easily predicted at the time Hippocrates outlined his ethical principles of medicine. Digital health is a broad term that encompasses use of digital devices and platforms, including electronic health records, patient-provider portals, mobile health apps, wearable biosensors, artificial intelligence, social media platforms, and medical extended reality, to improve the process and outcomes of health care delivery. These technologies have driven a cultural transformation in the delivery of care. We offer modest suggestions to help prompt discussion and contemplation about the current Oath and its relevancy to our changing times. Our suggestions are not meant to be a definitive set of final recommendations. Rather, we propose new text that bodies such as the World Medical Association might consider integrating into an updated Oath, just as previous changes were adopted to ensure the Oath remains relevant and impactful for all physicians and their patients.

Abstract:A selection of writings on the Hippocratic Oath, with a variety of opinions, has been critically reviewed. The aim of this article was a comparative analysis of the contents of the two most widely known versions of the Oath, namely ?Classic Version? - Edelstein?s translation from Greek to English, and ?Modern Version? - Lasagna?s modification of the former version. Some attention has also been paid to several texts composed in a similar vein to the Hippocratic Oath. This short review of the pertinent literature shows that opinions about its relevance range from warm approval to total disapproval. A number of pros and cons were discussed, and our own preferences were clearly stated. The fact that the tradition, in which graduate medical students take some version of the Hippocratic Oath, is nurtured at (almost) all medical schools over the world supports an affirmative answer to the question posed in the title of the article.

Abstract:The advent and dominance of social media in our daily lives is not a matter of discussion, and very few minimalistic individuals have tried to decrease this technological dependency, which can become toxic and noxious for the development of an autonomous personality and free thinking. Academic faculties claim a depauperation in terms of their freedom but are also not free from duties, responsibilities, and obligations. Here, duties, responsibilities, obligations, and freedom are addressed in historical terms as the university as an institution developed over the centuries after its founding in the 11th century is currently under attack. We premonish that these concepts must still be reiterated and divulgated to students and fellows in academia. Galilei's "Eppur si muove" ("and yet it moves") are the words pronounced by the Italian mathematician, physicist, and philosopher Galileo Galilei that should resonate in censorship bodies now and in the future.

Abstract:Introduction: Social media developments have completely changed how information is accessed and communicated. While great potential exists with these platforms, recent reports of online unprofessional behavior by doctors has threatened the medical professional identity; a matter of critical importance for clinicians and medical educators. This paper outlines a role for social media in facilitating support for clinicians and medical teachers; it will raise awareness of pitfalls and explain ethical and legal guidelines. Methods: An analysis of inappropriate behaviors and conflicting attitudes regarding what is acceptable in online posts, including the inter-generational contrast in online presence and perceptions of where the boundaries lie. Results and discussion: Guidance documents are analyzed and potentially confusing and conflicting statements are identified and clarified. The authors believe that clinicians and medical students must follow ethical imperatives in both personal and professional spheres. Conclusions: It is essential that medical educational and professional bodies encourage clinicians to support one another and share information online while providing clear legal and ethical advice on maintaining standards and avoiding common pitfalls. Education on the responsible use of social media and associated risk awareness should be a priority for medical school curricula.
Surgical Management of Simultaneous Anterior Cruciate Ligament and Patellar Tendon Ruptures: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Abstract This study performs a systematic review to determine (1) if a significant difference exists in return to preinjury activity level between one- and two-stage treatment of combined anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and patellar tendon (PT) tears; and (2) if a significant difference exists in the number of postoperative complications between the two differing surgical treatment approaches. A systematic review was performed using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and registered on PROSPERO. MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, SCOPUS, and Sport Discus were searched for English language level I–IV evidence studies on either one- (simultaneous) or two-stage (sequential) surgical treatment of simultaneously sustained ipsilateral ACL and PT tears. The approach to initial evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes were qualitatively analyzed. Methodological quality assessment of all included studies was completed using the Methodological Index for Non-randomized Studies (MINORS). The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) tool was used to assess quality of evidence and provide strength of recommendation. Statistical analyses were done using Fischer's exact test. Eleven articles (18 patients; 83% males; mean age, 31.1 ± 10.1 years; mean follow-up, 2.2 ± 1.7 years; and mean MINORS 7.8/16) were analyzed. Eight patients had a one-stage procedure (primary PT repair and ACL reconstruction), and 10 patients underwent a two-stage procedure (primary PT repair first followed by ACL reconstruction) with mean 28 ± 45.7 weeks (5 weeks–3 years) between surgeries. The rate for return to preinjury activity level after surgery was not significantly different between one- (88%) and two-stage (100%) (p = 0.444). There was a significantly higher complication rate (p = 0.023) in the one-stage (stiffness, instability, and patella baja) versus two-stage surgery (no complications). There was no significant difference in return to preinjury activity level between one- and two-stage PT repair and ACL reconstruction. However, the one-stage combined surgery had a significantly higher complication rate compared with two-stage surgery. The level of evidence is IV.

Abstract:This contribution argues in favor of implementing comprehensive educational strategies to combat the harmful effects of social media (SM) on body image and self-perception among Generations Alpha and Z. These generations are often exposed to unattainable beauty standards that can lead to distorted self-perceptions and body image disorders such as Zoom dysmorphia. To address this issue, we propose embedding health education, critical media literacy, and active parental involvement in educational curricula. The goal is to help young individuals develop the skills necessary to critically evaluate and navigate the pressures of SM. We believe that incorporating health education, critical media literacy, and active parental engagement into school programs is urgently needed to counteract the adverse effects of SM on body image and self-perception. These initiatives will equip young people with the necessary tools to evaluate SM content critically, navigate SM influences more safely and effectively, and develop a more resilient and informed perspective. This proactive educational approach is vital for improving mental health outcomes and mitigating the psychologic impacts of digital media. We hope that this comprehensive strategy will ultimately help future generations face SM pressures with confidence and critical awareness.
Generation Z's Health Information Avoidance Behavior: Insights From Focus Group Discussions

Abstract:Background: Younger generations actively use social media to access health information. However, research shows that they also avoid obtaining health information online at times when confronted with uncertainty. Objective: This study aims to examine the phenomenon of health information avoidance among Generation Z, a representative cohort of active web users in this era. Methods: Drawing on the planned risk information avoidance model, we adopted a qualitative approach to explore the factors related to information avoidance within the context of health and risk communication. The researchers recruited 38 participants aged 16 to 25 years for the focus group discussion sessions. Results: In this study, we sought to perform a deductive qualitative analysis of the focus group interview content with open, focused, and theoretical coding. Our findings support several key components of the planned risk information avoidance model while highlighting the underlying influence of cognition on emotions. Specifically, socioculturally, group identity and social norms among peers lead some to avoid health information. Cognitively, mixed levels of risk perception, conflicting values, information overload, and low credibility of information sources elicited their information avoidance behaviors. Affectively, negative emotions such as anxiety, frustration, and the desire to stay positive contributed to avoidance. Conclusions: This study has implications for understanding young users' information avoidance behaviors in both academia and practice.

Abstract:In the paper there are presented author's personal views on youth education, medical education, child and adolescent physiology, some other common medical and pediatric issues. The role of the physician as an educator of the child is underlined. The pediatrician must be the main advisor to the society, school and family in the matter of youth education, contribute to their optimal self-realization. The importance of moral values, gender peculiarities and cultural codes are emphasized. The imprinting of cultural codes should be considered as a biological basis of patriotism. The effectiveness of the implementation of healthy life style is discussed. The opinion regarding the protection of youth from potentially negative effects on their development and behavior is expressed. It would be purposeful to give more consideration to the fundamental research, particularly to the problem of age-related morphological and functional peculiarities of the growing organism in the conditions of norm and pathology. One should have in mind the importance of research of the combination of harmful factors for the organism. The elaboration of empathic and optimistic attitudes should be considered as the very important goals of medical education. The differential usage of clinical guidelines is discussed. It is mentioned the purposefulness of more wide application of fuzzy logic approaches in medicine. The items of rare diseases, individualized medicine, alternative medicine and bacteriophage therapy are discussed as well.
Principles of Hippocratic Medicine from the Perspective of Modern Medicine

Abstract:In this paper authors described some of the principles and theses of Hippocratic medicine. They emphasized that regardless existing controversial opinions as to whether Hippocrates stated some theses or not, and controversial views on some of his principles, he is often called the "father" of medicine, who laid the foundations in medicine as a science. Hippocrates gave recommendations on the doctor's behavior towards the patient, which is relevant up today. His holistic approach to medicine is becoming more and more relevant in the modern medicine. The application of the Hippocratic Oath today depends on the legislation of individual states, related to how legal solutions in some states are pro or contra to it. Authors opened and discussed his attitudes that mental illnesses are a sign of a diseased brain, his consideration the food as medicine and that the disease came from the intestines. Also issue of prognosis of the disease was opened and discussed as well as and Hippocrates's consideration of work and physical activity as the most appropriate medicine. Furthermore, authors considered importance of Hippocratic medicine related to Creative psychopharmacotherapy based on therapeutic communication and the creative satisfaction of needs in the therapeutic relationship with patients and in the recovery itself. Finally, an example of creatively use of the principle of Hippocratic medicine: "work as the most appropriate medicine" in therapeutic communication with patients through an ecological approach called "Ecopsychiatry", under the slogan presented in the media to the general public: "Cleansing nature improves your mental health" was described.

Abstract:The art of medicine was formed in Greece in close relationship to culture and philosophy. During the Christian era, it was projected through the Corpus Hippocraticus, in several ethical and philosophical documents such as The Oath of Medical Science, Medical Law, Decency, Precepts, Antique Medicine, Airs and Aphorisms, Waters and places. The central idea of Hippocratic philosophy is the principle of wholeness, summarized by Plato in the sentence "The certain knowledge of nature is solely possible from medicine and only when it is correctly approached as a whole". Clinical actions, are imbued by Hippocratic ethics; their aim is the ill that is an anthropos, a human being. The physician must take care of the ill with devotion, selflessness, comprehension and compassion. The oath is the supreme deontological code that summarizes the essential concepts of Hippocratic philosophy. Recent studies suggest that there is a great distance between the thinking of Hippocrates and present scientific medicine. Hippocratic philosophy rejects the epistemological principles of modern science. The Hippocratic logic is probabilistic and temporal and rejects the principles of noncontradiction, of identity and therefore the abstract determinism of contemporary science. The present force of the oath is explained because its ethics and epistemology are matters of medicine that understands the real world of the ill, trying to avoid suffering and injustice. Only Hippocrates can defend each ill as a whole with the wisdom of its philosophy.

Abstract:Abstract The internet presents not just opportunities but also risks that range, to name a few, from online abuse and misinformation to the polarisation of public debate. Given the increasingly digital nature of our societies, these risks make it essential for users to learn how to wisely use digital technologies as part of a more holistic approach to promoting human flourishing. However, insofar as they are exacerbated by both the affordances and the political economy of the internet, this article argues that a new understanding of wisdom that is germane to the digital age is needed. As a result, we propose a framework for conceptualising what we call cyber-wisdom , and how this can be cultivated via formal education, in ways that are grounded in neo-Aristotelian virtue ethics and that build on three prominent existing models of wisdom. The framework, according to which cyber-wisdom is crucial to navigating online risks and opportunities through the deployment of character virtues necessary for flourishing online, suggests that cyber-wisdom consists of four components: cyber-wisdom literacy, cyber-wisdom reasoning, cyber-wisdom self-reflection, cyber-wisdom motivation. Unlike the models on which it builds, the framework accounts for the specificity of the digital age and is both conceptual and practical. On the one hand, each component has conceptual implications for what it means to be wise in the digital age. On the other hand, informed by character education literature and practice, it has practical implications for how to cultivate cyber-wisdom in the classroom through teaching methods that match its different components.

Abstract:Although our classrooms are filled with students spanning multiple generations, students entering pharmacy school are largely members of Generation Z (GenZ). To optimize pharmacy education in and outside of the classroom, we must appreciate the distinctions making GenZ unique. GenZ students want to change the world! Although much of this population is currently emerging in classrooms and careers, preliminary observations indicate they are loyal, hard-working, self-sufficient, willing to earn hierarchical advancement, and may change jobs less frequently compared with predecessors. They emerge as one of the most socially responsible generations, passionate about diversity and inclusion.1 They are more likely to choose a career path, workplace, or educational institution for reasons of social responsibility, rather than salary, compared with previous generations. They are also creative, innovative, and willing to try new things without fear of failure, including entrepreneurialism. They are financially astute and careful to make choices ensuring solid return on investment.1 Not surprisingly, most are engaged daily with multiple social media platforms. They care about their digital and social impact and focus on individuality with a desire for customization. GenZ members are uniquely equipped to adapt to today's rapidly changing health care needs. This commentary describes attributes, needs, and perspectives of the GenZ student that must be understood by today's pharmacy educators to assist with tailoring educational strategies. Information presented is summarized from a review of primary and periodical literature, including both research and anecdotal perspectives. We hope that this will be a starting point for further discussion within the academy.
