Abstract:Metallic materials are among the most crucial engineering materials widely utilized as biomaterials owing to their significant thermal conductivity, mechanical characteristics, and biocompatibility. Although these metallic biomedical implants, such as stainless steel, gold, silver, dental amalgams, Co-Cr, and Ti alloys, are generally used for bone tissue regeneration and repairing bodily tissue, the need for innovative technologies is required owing to the sensitivity of medical applications and to avoid any potential harmful reactions, thereby improving the implant to bone integration and prohibiting infection lea by corrosion and excessive stress. Taking this into consideration, several research and developments in biomaterial surface modification are geared toward resolving these issues in bone-related medical therapies/implants offering a substantial influence on cell adherence, increasing the longevity of the implant and rejuvenation along with the expansion in cell and molecular biology expertise. The primary objective of this review is to reaffirm the significance of surface modification of biomedical implants by enlightening numerous significant physical surface modifications, including ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification, thermal spraying, ion implantation, glow discharge plasma, electrophoretic deposition, and physical vapor deposition. Furthermore, we also focused on the characteristics of some commonly used biomedical alloys, such as stainless steel, Co-Cr, and Ti alloys.

Antibacterial activity and biofilm inhibition by surface modified titanium alloy medical implants following application of silver, titanium dioxide and hydroxyapatite nanocoatings

Abstract:One of the most common causes of implant failure is peri-implantitis, which is caused by bacterial biofilm formation on the surfaces of dental implants. Modification of the surface nanotopography has been suggested to affect bacterial adherence to implants. Silver nanoparticles are also known for their antibacterial properties. In this study, titanium alloy implants were surface modified following silver plating, anodisation and sintering techniques to create a combination of silver, titanium dioxide and hydroxyapatite (HA) nanocoatings. Their antibacterial performance was quantitatively assessed by measuring the growth of Streptococcus sanguinis, proportion of live/dead cells and lactate production by the microbes over 24 h. Application of a dual layered silver-HA nanocoating to the surface of implants successfully inhibited bacterial growth in the surrounding media (100% mortality), whereas the formation of bacterial biofilm on the implant surfaces was reduced by 97.5%. Uncoated controls and titanium dioxide nanocoatings showed no antibacterial effect. Both silver and HA nanocoatings were found to be very stable in biological fluids with material loss, as a result of dissolution, to be less than 0.07% for the silver nanocoatings after 24 h in a modified Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate buffer. No dissolution was detected for the HA nanocoatings. Thus, application of a dual layered silver-HA nanocoating to titanium alloy implants creates a surface with antibiofilm properties without compromising the HA biocompatibility required for successful osseointegration and accelerated bone healing.

Laser-Assisted Nanotexturing and Silver Immobilization on Titanium Implant Surfaces to Enhance Bone Cell Mineralization and Antimicrobial Properties

Abstract:Despite the great advancement and wide use of titanium (Ti) and Ti-based alloys in different orthopedic implants, device-related infections remain the major complication in modern orthopedic and trauma surgery. Most of these infections are often caused by both poor antibacterial and osteoinductive properties of the implant surface. Here, we have demonstrated a facile two-step laser nanotexturing and immobilization of silver onto the titanium implants to improve both cellular integration and antibacterial properties of Ti surfaces. The required threshold laser processing power for effective nanotexturing and osseointegration was systematically determined by the level of osteoblast cells mineralized on the laser nanotextured Ti (LN–Ti) surfaces using a neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet laser (Nd:YAG, wavelength of 1.06 μm). Laser processing powers above 24 W resulted in the formation of hierarchical nanoporous structures (average pore 190 nm) on the Ti surface with a 2.5-fold increase in osseointegration as compared to the pristine Ti surface. Immobilization of silver nanoparticles onto the LN–Ti surface was conducted by dip coating in an aqueous silver ionic solution and subsequently converted to silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by using a low power laser-assisted photocatalytic reduction process. Structural and surface morphology analysis via XRD and SEM revealed a uniform distribution of Ag and the formation of an AgTi-alloy interface on the Ti surface. The antibacterial efficacy of the LN–Ti with laser immobilized silver (LN–Ti/LI–Ag) was tested against both Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria. The LN–Ti/LI–Ag surface was observed to have efficient and stable antimicrobial properties for over 6 days. In addition, it was found that the LN–Ti/LI–Ag maintained a cytocompatibility and bone cell mineralization property similar to the LN–Ti surface. Abstract:Introduction Titanium (Ti) and its alloys are widely utilized in endosseous implants. However, their clinical efficacy is marred by complications arising from bacterial infections owing to their inadequate antibacterial properties. Consequently, enhancing the antibacterial attributes of implant surfaces stands as a pivotal objective in the realm of implantable materials research. Methods In this study, we employed sequential anodization and plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) technology to fabricate a silver-embedded sparsely titania nanotube array (SNT) on the near-β titanium alloy Ti-5Zr-3Sn-5Mo-15Nb (TLM) implants. The surface characteristics, antimicrobial properties, biocompatibility, and osteogenic activity of the silver-nanomodified SNT implant (SNT Ag) surface, alongside peri-implant inflammatory responses, were meticulously assessed through a combination of in vitro and in vivo analyses. Results Compared with polished TLM and SNT, the silver-embedded SNT (SNT Ag) surface retained the basic shape of nanotubes and stably released Ag+ at the ppm level for a long time, which demonstrated an effective inhibition and bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus (SA) while maintaining ideal cytocompatibility. Additionally, the subtle modifications in nanotubular topography induced by silver implantation endowed SNT Ag with enhanced osteogenic activity and mitigated inflammatory capsulation in soft tissue peri-implants in a rat model. Conclusion Incorporating a silver-embedded SNT array onto the implant surface demonstrated robust antibacterial properties, impeccable cytocompatibility, exceptional osteogenic activity, and the potential to prevent inflammatory encapsulation around the implant site. The Silver-PIII modification strategy emerges as a highly promising approach for surface applications in endosseous implants and trans-gingival implant abutments.

Abstract:Orthopedic and dental implant failure continues to be a significant concern due to localized bacterial infections. Previous studies have attempted to improve implant surfaces by modifying their texture and roughness or coating them with antibiotics to enhance antibacterial properties for implant longevity. However, these approaches have demonstrated limited effectiveness. In this study, we attempted to engineer the titanium (Ti) alloy surface biomimetically at the nanometer scale, inspired by the cicada wing nanostructure using alkaline hydrothermal treatment (AHT) to simultaneously confer antibacterial properties and support the adhesion and proliferation of mammalian cells. The two modified Ti surfaces were developed using a 4 h and 8 h AHT process in 1 N NaOH at 230 °C, followed by a 2-hour post-calcination at 600 °C. We found that the control plates showed a relatively smooth surface, while the treatment groups (4 h & 8 h AHT) displayed nanoflower structures containing randomly distributed nano-spikes. The results demonstrated a statistically significant decrease in the contact angle of the treatment groups, which increased wettability characteristics. The 8 h AHT group exhibited the highest wettability and significant increase in roughness 0.72 ± 0.08 μm ( P < 0.05), leading to more osteoblast cell attachment, reduced cytotoxicity effects, and enhanced relative survivability. The alkaline phosphatase activity measured in all different groups indicated that the 8 h AHT group exhibited the highest activity, suggesting that the surface roughness and wettability of the treatment groups may have facilitated cell adhesion and attachment and subsequently increased secretion of extracellular matrix. Overall, the findings indicate that biomimetic nanotextured surfaces created by the AHT process have the potential to be translated as implant coatings to enhance bone regeneration and implant integration.

Alcohol and Female Puberty The Role of Intraovarian Systems

Abstract:Alcohol consumption during early adolescence may suppress the secretion of specific female reproductive hormones, thereby delaying puberty and adversely affecting the maturation of the reproductive system. These effects occur through several mechanisms, including altered production and secretion by the ovaries of estradiol, a key steroid hormone involved in the timing and regulation of female reproductive events. Alcohol can affect estradiol production by interfering with the normal function of regulatory hormones produced by the brain and the pituitary gland. Recent research has demonstrated additional potential mechanisms for alcohol’s effects on female reproductive capability, including interference with specific regulatory systems located entirely within the ovary. Such “intraovarian” systems include the insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and nitric oxide (NO) systems. Alcohol can dampen the stimulatory effects of the ovarian IGF-1 system and can increase the inhibitory effects of the ovarian NO system. These effects combine to decrease estradiol secretion. Thus, alcohol impairs ovarian function not only by interfering with hormonal communication between the brain, pituitary gland, and ovaries but also by directly altering the function of regulatory systems within the ovaries themselves. These results provide further evidence of the risks of underage drinking and the importance of its prevention.

Abstract:Visually Impaired (VI) people generally face difficulties during their pedestrian commute, when forced on to side-walks cluttered with vendors, animals and other obstacles. No single system can comprehensively cover all of their mobility needs. The proposed system intends to provide smart electronic aid for the VI which is appropriate to complement their white cane using the principles of the IoT. It detects any low-lying obstacles on its course and alerts the user to them and also uses Global Positioning System (GPS) technology which is a component of any smart phone, to pinpoint the VI's location when necessary. A feedback system, which is essentially a simple auditory circuit, which alarms the user of any obstacle, and informs priory designated guardians about the VI's current whereabouts, done by transmitting the coordinates of VI to a registered mobile number fed into an Android Application.
A Water-Based Biocoating to Increase the Infection Resistance and Osteoconductivity of Titanium Surfaces

Abstract:As the population ages, the number of patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) continues to increase. Infections after primary arthroplasty are rare but have high rates of morbidity and mortality, as well as enormous financial implications for healthcare systems. Numerous methods including the use of superhydrophobic coatings, the incorporation of antibacterial agents, and the application of topographical treatments have been developed to reduce bacterial attachment to medical devices. However, most of these methods require complex manufacturing processes. Thus, the main purpose of this study was to apply biocoatings to titanium (Ti) surfaces to increase their infection resistance and osteoconductivity via simple processes, without organic reagents. We modified titanium surfaces with a combination of aminomalononitrile (AMN) and an antibiotic-loaded mesoporous bioactive glass (MBG) and evaluated both the antibacterial effects of the coating layer and its effect on osteoblast proliferation and differentiation. The properties of the modified surface, such as the hydrophilicity, roughness, and surface morphology, were characterized via contact angle measurements, atomic force microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The cell proliferation reagent WST-1 assay and the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) assay were used to determine the degrees of adhesion and differentiation, respectively, of the MG-63 osteoblast-like cells on the surface. Antimicrobial activity was evaluated by examining the survival rate and inhibition zone of Escherichia coli (E. coli). The AMN coating layer reduced the water contact angle (WCA) of the titanium surface from 87° ± 2.5° to 53° ± 2.3° and this change was retained even after immersion in deionized water for five weeks, demonstrating the stability of the AMN coating. Compared with nontreated titanium and polydopamine (PDA) coating layers, the AMN surface coating increased MG-63 cell attachment, spreading, and early ALP expression; reduced E. coli adhesion; and increased the percentage of dead bacteria. In addition, the AMN coating served as an adhesion layer for the subsequent deposition of MBG-containing antibiotic nanoparticles. The synergistic effects of the AMN layer and antibiotics released from the MBG resulted in an obvious E. coli inhibition zone that was not observed in the nontreated titanium group.

Abstract:XRD peak profile analysis was performed on polycrystalline MgB2 bulks and tapes manufactured by various heat treatment conditions in order to investigate statistical value of crystallite size. Volume-weighted and area-weighted mean diameter of a bulk sample heated at 600degC for 6 h were estimated to be approximately 90 nm and 20 nm, respectively. These suggest that crystallite size distribution of MgB2 is very wide, although a lot of very small crystallites exist. Similar tendencies were observed for other samples. On the other hand J c values were found to be rather low compared to the expected values considering its small D a . This indicates that a small portion of crystallite interfaces act as effective pinning centers.
Biofunctionalization of selective laser melted porous titanium using silver and zinc nanoparticles to prevent infections by antibiotic-resistant bacteria

Abstract:Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are frequently involved in implant-associated infections (IAIs), making the treatment of these infections even more challenging. Therefore, multifunctional implant surfaces that simultaneously possess antibacterial activity and induce osseointegration are highly desired in order to prevent IAIs. The incorporation of multiple inorganic antibacterial agents onto the implant surface may aid in generating synergistic antibacterial behavior against a wide microbial spectrum while reducing the occurrence of bacterial resistance. In this study, porous titanium implants synthesized by selective laser melting (SLM) were biofunctionalized with plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) using electrolytes based on Ca/P species as well as silver and zinc nanoparticles in ratios from 0 to 100% that were tightly embedded into the growing titanium oxide layer. After the surface bio-functionalization process, silver and zinc ions were released from the implant surfaces for at least 28 days resulting in antibacterial leaching activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Furthermore, the biofunctionalized implants generated reactive oxygen species, thereby contributing to antibacterial contact-killing. While implant surfaces containing up to 75% silver and 25% zinc nanoparticles fully eradicated both adherent and planktonic bacteria in vitro as well as in an ex vivo experiment performed using murine femora, solely zinc-bearing surfaces did not. The minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations determined for different combinations of both types of ions confirmed the presence of a strong synergistic antibacterial behavior, which could be exploited to reduce the amount of required silver ions by two orders of magnitude (i.e., 120 folds). At the same time, the zinc bearing surfaces enhanced the metabolic activity of pre-osteoblasts after 3, 7, and 11 days. Altogether, implant biofunctionalization by PEO with silver and zinc nanoparticles is a fruitful strategy for the synthesis of multifunctional surfaces on orthopedic implants and the prevention of IAIs caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Implant-associated infections are becoming increasingly challenging to treat due to growing antibiotic resistance against antibiotics. Here, we propose an alternative approach where silver and zinc nanoparticles are simultaneously used for the biofunctionalization of rationally designed additively manufactured porous titanium. This combination of porous design and tailored surface treatment allows us to reduce the amount of required silver nanoparticles by two orders of magnitude, fully eradicate antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and enhance the osteogenic behavior of pre-osteoblasts. We demonstrate that the resulting implants display antibacterial activity in vitro and ex vivo against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
Enhancing Bactericidal Properties of Ti6Al4V Surfaces through Micro and Nano Hierarchical Laser Texturing

Abstract:Orthopedic and dental implants made from Ti6Al4V are widely used due to their excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility. However, the long-term performance of these implants can be compromised by bacterial infections. This study explores the development of hierarchically textured surfaces with enhanced bactericidal properties to address such challenges. Hierarchical surface structures were developed by combining microscale features produced by a microsecond laser and superimposed submicron features produced using a femtosecond laser. Microscale patterns were produced by the pulsed laser surface melting process, whereas submicrometer laser-induced periodic surface structures were created on top of them by femtosecond laser processing. Escherichia coli bacterial cells were cultured on the textured surface. After 24 h, a staining analysis was performed using SYTO9 and PI dyes to investigate the samples with a confocal microscope for live dead assays. Results showed bacterial colony formation onto the microscale surface textures with live bacterial cells, whereas the hierarchical surface textures display segregated and physically damaged bacterial cell attachments on surfaces. The hierarchical surface textures showed ∼98% dead bacterial cells due to the combined effect of its multiscale surface features and oxide formation during the laser processing steps. The efficacy of hierarchical surface textures in enhancing the antibacterial behavior of Ti6Al4V implants is evident from the conducted research. Such laser-based surface treatments can find potential applications in different industrial sectors.
Antibacterial and osteogenic thin films on Ti-6Al-4V surface formed by passivation process in copper hydroxide solution

Abstract:Implant-associated infections are threatening and devastating complications that lead to bone destruction and loss. As a smooth surface is suitable for inhibiting bacterial adhesion, endowing antibacterial activity to the Ti surface without any structural changes in the surface topography is an effective strategy for preventing infection. The thin film on the Ti-6Al-4 V surface was functionalized to endow antibacterial activity by immersion in a Cu(OH) 2 solution. The resulting surface maintains the surface topography with a surface roughness of 0.03 μm even after the immersion in the Cu(OH) 2 solution. Moreover, Cu was detected at approximately 10 atom% from the surface and was present up to a depth of 30 nm of thin film. In vitro experiments revealed that the resulting surface exhibited antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and allowed the cellular proliferation, differentiation, and calcification of MC3T3-E1 cells. Furthermore, in vivo experiments determined that the presence of Cu in the thin film on the Ti-6Al-4 V surface led to no inflammatory reactions, including bone resorption. Thus, immersion in a Cu(OH) 2 solution incorporates and immobilizes Cu into the thin film on the Ti-6Al-4 V surface without any structural alternations in the surface topography, and the resulting smooth surface exhibits antibacterial activity and osteogenic cell compatibility without cytotoxicity or inflammatory reactions. Our findings provide fundamental insights into the surface design of Ti-based medical devices, to achieve bone reconstruction and infection prevention. Passivation of Ti-6Al-4V in Cu(OH)2 solution endowed smooth thin film with antibacterial activity and osteogenic cell compatibility for potentially achieving both bone reconstruction and infection prevention.

Abstract:Microbial colonization and biofilm formation on implanted devices represent an important complication in orthopaedic and dental surgery and may result in implant failure. Controlled release of antibacterial agents directly at the implant site may represent an effective approach to treat these chronic complications. Resistance to conventional antibiotics by pathogenic bacteria has emerged in recent years as a major problem of public health. In order to overcome this problem, non-conventional antimicrobial agents have been under investigation. In this study, polyacrylate-based hydrogel thin coatings have been electrosynthesised on titanium substrates starting from poly(ethylene glycol diacrylate)–co–acrylic acid. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with a narrow size distribution have been synthesized using a “green” procedure and immobilized on Ti implant surfaces exploiting hydrogel coatings’ swelling capabilities. The coatings have been characterized by XPS and SEM/EDX, while their silver release performances have been monitored by ICP–MS. The antibacterial activity of these AgNP-modified hydrogel coatings was tested evaluating in vitro inhibition growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli, among the most common pathogens in orthopaedic infections. Moreover, a preliminary investigation of the biocompatibility of silver-loaded coatings versus MG63 human osteoblast-like cells has been performed. An important point of strength of this paper, in fact, is the concern about the effect of silver species on the surrounding cell system in implanted medical devices. Abstract:Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) and implant loosening are the most common complications after joint replacement surgery. Due to their increased surface area, additively manufactured porous metallic implants provide optimal osseointegration but they are also highly susceptible to bacterial colonization. Antibacterial surface coatings of porous metals that do not inhibit osseointegration are therefore highly desirable. The potential of silver coatings on arthroplasty implants to inhibit PJI has been demonstrated, but the optimal silver content and release kinetics have not yet been defined. A tight control over the silver deposition coatings can help overcome bacterial infections while reducing cytotoxicity to human cells. In this regard, porous titanium sputtered with silver and titanium nitride with increasing silver contents enabled controlling the antibacterial effect against common PJI pathogens while maintaining the metabolic activity of human primary cells. Electron beam melting additively manufactured titanium alloys, coated with increasing silver contents, were physico-chemically characterized and investigated for effects against common PJI pathogens. Silver contents from 7 at % to 18 at % of silver were effective in reducing bacterial growth and biofilm formation. Staphylococcus epidermidis was more susceptible to silver ions than Staphylococcus aureus. Importantly, all silver-coated titanium scaffolds supported primary human osteoblasts proliferation, differentiation, and mineralization up to 28 days. A slight reduction of cell metabolic activity was observed at earlier time points, but no detrimental effects were found at the end of the culture period. Silver release from the silver-coated scaffolds also had no measurable effects on primary osteoblast gene expression since similar expression of genes related to osteogenesis was observed regardless the presence of silver. The investigated silver-coated porous titanium scaffolds may thus enhance osseointegration while reducing the risk of biofilm formation by the most common clinically encountered pathogens.

Abstract:Biofilm development in medical devices is considered the major virulence component that leads to increased mortality and morbidity among patients. Removing a biofilm once formed is challenging and frequently results in persistent infections. Many current antibiofilm coating strategies involve harsh conditions causing damage to the surface of the medical devices. To address the issue of bacterial attachment in medical devices, we propose a novel antibacterial surface modification approach. In this paper, we developed a novel low-temperature based solution-processed approach to deposit silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) inside a titanium oxide (TiO2) matrix to obtain Ag-TiO2 nanoparticles coating. The low temperature (120 °C) based UV annealed drop cast method is novel and ensures no surface damage to the medical devices. Various medical-grade biomaterials were then coated using Ag-TiO2 to modify the surface of the materials. Several studies were performed to observe the antibacterial and antibiofilm properties of Ag-TiO2 coated medical devices and biomaterials. Moreover, the Ag-TiO2 NPs did not show any skin irritation in rats and showed biocompatibility in the chicken egg model. This study indicates that Ag-TiO2 coating has promising potential for healthcare applications to combat microbial infection and biofilm formation.

Abstract:Fouling of body implants is inevitable as they stay in contact with body fluid of harsh ionic composition with varying pH, mixed with serum proteins and bacteria. Some alloys used as implant material comes with inherent bacterial resistant character or in other case the use of antibacterial coating is a popular measure to check the biofouling of their surfaces. But the development of bacterial resistant coating which don’t compromise the cytocompatibility of implant is still a challenging task. In this research, a novel antibacterial metallosurfactant bishexadecyltrimethylammoniumtantalum heptachloride (TaC) is synthesized to coat Ti-6Al-4V surface which provides excellent replacement to pure Tantalum which is a highly demanded implant material. For this, Ti-6Al-4V surface was acid treated to grow microstructures and porosity to help covalent bonding with TaC molecules and get durable and robust coating. The TaC coating was characterized as highly stable, hydrophilic, bioactive (assist osseointegration), antimicrobial against Gram negative (E. coli) and Gram positive (S. aureus), anti- corrosive in abiotic as well as biotic medium and compatible with fibroblast tissues. Being amphiphilic in nature, the coating interferes with serum albumin (BSA) adsorption on Ti-6Al-4V surface. Retardation in BSA adsorption due to TaC coating is evident from contact angle, XPS and electro chemical studies. The key appeal of coating is its simple fabrication technique and cost-effectiveness, moreover its chemical and structural features is such that it promotes fibroblast adhesion and viability. The coating exhibited a perfect balance to cater the antibiofouling activity and fibroblast proliferation which is biggest challenge in fabrication of biomaterials. Various results obtained from this comprehensive study may advocate the clinical applications of Ta metallosurfactant coating on biomedical alloys.

Abstract:The growing demand for treating musculoskeletal disorders has necessitated the design and manufacturing of novel biometal-based implants and scaffolds with longer service life. However, various technological hurdles must be addressed to establish feasible manufacturing technology for these medical devices. The clinical challenges of bare metallic implants and scaffolds include bioinert surfaces, inadequate cell-material interactions, bacterial colonization, modulus mismatch, and inferior tribo-corrosion-resistant properties. These factors often increase the risk of implant failure, which necessitates revision surgery. The recent advances in biomaterials have facilitated the development of technologies such as functional and smart coatings, biomimetic interfaces, nanosurface engineering, and biomolecule immobilization for surface modification of these implants. These strategies are gaining popularity as effective approaches for mitigating the challenges in various applications. This review highlights the current scenario of biometal-based implants and scaffolds, focusing on surface modification technologies for creating a biocompatible interface via functional, durable coatings to address various issues related to implant rejection. The review emphasizes the techniques for developing these functional coatings and exploring their potential applications in biomedical engineering. The opportunities and challenges in the clinical translation are also highlighted. In summary, this review comprehensively delves into the scientific aspects of coatings along with shedding light on the commercial considerations, making it a valuable resource for applied and translational researchers.

Abstract:Titanium (Ti) implants are widely used in orthopedic and dental applications due to their excellent biocompatibility and mechanical properties. However, bacterial adhesion and subsequent biofilm formation on implant surfaces pose a significant risk of postoperative infections and complications. Conventional surface modifications often lack long-lasting antibacterial efficacy, necessitating the development of novel coatings with enhanced antimicrobial properties. This study aims to develop a novel Ag-TiO 2 -OTS (Silver-Titanium dioxide-Octadecyltrichlorosilane, ATO) nanocomposite coating, through a chemical plating method. By employing a 'resist-killing-disintegrate' approach, the coating is designed to inhibit bacterial adhesion effectively, and facilitate pollutant removal with lasting effects. Characterization of the coatings was performed using spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and contact angle analysis. Antibacterial efficacy, quantitatively evaluated against E. coli and S. aureus over 168 h, showed a significant reduction in bacterial adhesion by 76.6% and 66.5% respectively, and bacterial removal rates were up to 83.8% and 73.3% in comparison to uncoated Ti-base material. Additionally, antibacterial assays indicated that the ratio of the Lifshitz-van der Waals apolar component to electron donor surface energy components significantly influences bacterial adhesion and removal, underscoring a tunable parameter for optimizing antibacterial surfaces. Biocompatibility assessments with the L929 cell line revealed that the ATO coatings exhibited excellent biocompatibility, with minimal cytotoxicity and no significant impact on cell proliferation or apoptosis. The ATO coatings provided a multi-functionality surface that not only resists bacterial colonization but also possesses self-cleaning capabilities, thereby marking a substantial advancement in the development of antibacterial coatings for medical implants.

Abstract:Titanium and its alloys are widely used in biomedical fields as metallic biomaterials, specifically for implant applications. There are many kinds of titanium alloys capable to be used in clinical treatment, Ti–6Al–4V alloys are among the most widely used biomedical implant materials due to their favorable strength, high corrosion and wear resistance along with acceptable biocompatibility. Based on the complex physiological environment in the human body and the different needs for the treatment of various diseases, the performance requirements of Ti–6Al–4V alloy are getting higher and higher. Unfortunately, Ti–6Al–4V alloy has some disadvantages like high friction coefficient, mismatch of elastic modulus, and release of cytotoxic elements, hence its original performance is not satisfactorily sufficient to meet the growing clinical requirements. In consequence, further multilateral improvement of the overall performance of Ti–6Al–4V alloy by surface modification leads to achieving more and more compatible materials with the human body environment with stable and long-term effective use. Surface modification alone is not enough for improvement of implants' efficiency and the structural influence and topological features of cellular structures should also be considered. This paper is focused on the surface modification methods for improving wear resistance, corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, antibacterial property, wettability, and elastic modulus of Ti–6Al–4V alloy with the aim to achieve high throughput nascent Ti–6Al–4V alloys for biomedical applications. It mainly focuses on the new generation of medical implants especially additively manufactured ones and it summarizes the latest articles related to Ti–6Al–4V surface modification methods and elucidates how biocompatibility improvement will be a key research direction in the field of modern Ti–6Al–4V implants in the future.

Silver Containing Antimicrobial Coatings on Innovative Ti-30Nb-5Mo β-Alloy Prepared by Micro-Arc Oxidation for Biomedical Implant Applications

Abstract:Micro-arc oxidation (MAO) is a versatile surface-modification method that promotes higher wear and corrosion resistance, osseointegration, and biological activity to titanium alloys' surfaces. This study aimed to modify the surface of a recently developed metastable β Ti alloy, which exhibits more favorable mechanical properties for implant applications compared to some commercial Ti alloys, by incorporating Ag into the coatings to introduce a bactericidal function to the surface. The Ti-30Nb-5Mo alloy, with lower elastic modulus, was treated by the MAO method using electrolyte solutions containing calcium acetate, magnesium acetate, β-glycerol phosphate, and varied concentrations of silver nitrate (1.5 mM, 2.5 mM, and 3.5 mM). With an increase in the concentration of silver ions in the electrolyte, the galvanostatic period during the MAO process decreased from 1.7 s to 0.5 s. The Ca/P ratio increased from 0.72 up to 1.36. X-ray diffraction showed that the MAO coatings were formed by rutile and anatase TiO2 main phases and calcium phosphates. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis detected the presence of amorphous Nb2O5, CaCO3, and MgCO3, and metallic and oxide forms of Ag. The increase in Ag in the electrolyte decreased the coating thickness (from 14.2 μm down to 10.0 μm), increased the contact angle (from 37.6° up to 57.4°), and slightly increased roughness (from 0.64 μm up to 0.79 μm). The maximum inhibition of Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans strains growth was of 43%, 43%, and 61%, respectively. The Ag did not negatively affect the differentiation of adipose-tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells. Therefore, the treatment of the surface of the innovative Ti-30Nb-5Mo alloy by the MAO method was effective in producing a noncytotoxic porous coating with bactericidal properties and improved osseointegration capabilities.
