Abstract:The deposition and intercalation of metal atoms can induce superconductivity in monolayer and bilayer graphenes. For example, it has been experimentally proved that Li-deposited graphene is a superconductor with critical temperature $T_{c}$ of 5.9 K, Ca-intercalated bilayer graphene C$_{6}$CaC$_{6}$ and K-intercalated epitaxial bilayer graphene C$_{8}$KC$_{8}$ are superconductors with $T_{c}$ of 2-4 K and 3.6 K, respectively. However, the $T_{c}$ of them are relatively low. To obtain higher $T_{c}$ in graphene-based superconductors, here we predict a new Ca-intercalated bilayer graphene C$_{2}$CaC$_{2}$, which shows higher Ca concentration than the C$_{6}$CaC$_{6}$. It is proved to be thermodynamically and dynamically stable. The electronic structure, electron-phonon coupling (EPC) and superconductivity of C$_{2}$CaC$_{2}$ are investigated based on first-principles calculations. The EPC of C$_{2}$CaC$_{2}$ mainly comes from the coupling between the electrons of C-$p_{z}$ orbital and the high- and low-frequency vibration modes of C atoms. The calculated EPC constant $\lambda$ of C$_{2}$CaC$_{2}$ is 0.75, and the superconducting $T_{c}$ is 18.9 K, which is much higher than other metal-intercalated bilayer graphenes. By further applying -4\% biaxial compressive strain to C$_{2}$CaC$_{2}$, the $T_{c}$ can be boosted to 26.6 K. Thus, the predicted C$_{2}$CaC$_{2}$ provides a new platform for realizing superconductivity with the highest $T_{c}$ in bilayer graphenes.

Abstract:We have prepared Ca-intercalated multilayer epitaxial graphene films on silicon carbide and observed superconductivity in them with both magnetic and transport measurements. Superconducting transition has been detected at temperature up to 7 K in Ca-intercalated epitaxial graphene with the thickness down to 10 layers grown on both Si-face and C-face of silicon carbide. The result demonstrates intercalated epitaxial graphene as a good platform to study graphene-based superconductivity.

Abstract:Ca-intercalation has opened a way for superconductivity in graphene on SiC. However, the atomic and electronic structures being critical for superconductivity are still under discussion. We find the essential role of the interface between monolayer graphene and the SiC substrate for superconductivity. In the Ca-intercalation process, at the interface a carbon layer terminating SiC changes to graphene by Ca-termination of SiC (monolayer graphene becomes bilayer) with inducing more carriers than a free-standing model. Then, Ca is intercalated in-between graphene layers, which shows superconductivity with the updated critical temperature ($T_{C}$) of up to 5.7 K. In addition, the relation between $T_{C}$ and the normal-state conductivity is unusual, "dome-shape". These findings are beyond the simple C6CaC6 model in which s-wave BCS superconductivity is theoretically predicted. This work proposes a general picture of the intercalation-induced superconductivity in graphene on SiC, and shed the light on the potential of superconductivity induced by other intercalants.

Abstract:Calcium intercalation underneath epitaxial graphene on 6H-SiC(0001) were investigated by scanning tunneling microcopy (STM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. After the preparation of calcium-adsorbed graphene on 6H-SiC(0001), annealing the sample to 900 degrees C activated the intercalation of the adsorbed calcium into buffer layer (BL), monolayer (1L) and bilayer epitaxial (2L) graphene. Subsequent DFT modeling show the dependence of the most stable intercalation sites for calcium underneath BL, 1L and 2L graphene on the intercalation density. Further DFT calculations indicate charge transfer from the intercalant into graphene layers, leading to the n-type doping of the calcium-intercalated BL, 1L and 2L graphene. Theoretical Investigation of Two-Dimensional Superconductivity in Intercalated Graphene Layers

Abstract:First-principles calculations of the electronic structure and vibrational modes, in a system of graphene bilayers and trilayers intercalated with alkaline earth atoms, are resented. It is found that, in similarity to the case of superconducting graphite intercalation compounds, the Fermi level is crossed by an s-band derived from the intercalant states, as well as graphitic pi-bands. The electron-phonon coupling parameter is found to be 0.60 and 0.80, respectively, in calcium intercalated graphene bilayers and trilayers. In superconducting CaC6 graphite intercalation compound, the calculated value for the electron-phonon coupling parameter is 0.83. It is concluded that two-dimensional superconductivity is possible in a system of a few graphene layers intercalated with calcium.

Abstract:A series of 2D Li‐deposited/intercalated graphene superlattice compounds are designed, which exhibit prominent composition‐dependent electronic states and superconductivity. Among them, deposition type‐I‐Li2C6, type‐I‐Li2C8, intercalation type‐II‐LiC4, and coexisting deposition and intercalation type‐III‐Li3C12 are phonon‐mediated superconducting materials with superconducting transition temperatures of 18, 12, 3.4, and 14 K, respectively. The introduction of superconductivity in graphene systems is highly desirable from both fundamental physics and application perspectives. In this article, a superlattice strategy to develop a series of Li‐doped graphene is reported: deposition type‐I (Li2C6, Li2C8, LiC6, Li3C24, LiC12, LiC16, Li2C36, LiC24), intercalation type‐II (LiC4, Li2C12, LiC8, LiC12, LiC16), and coexisting deposition and intercalation type‐III (Li3C12). With increasing concentration of Li atoms, both metallicity, and electron–phonon coupling (EPC) has dramatically increased, which is favorable for the emergence of superconductivity in the screened Li–C compounds. Notably, graphene superlattice structures with intercalated Li2 atoms have higher stability, while Li1‐deposited graphene at the same concentration produces higher Tc. Among them, type‐I‐Li2C6, type‐I‐Li2C8, type‐II‐LiC4, and type‐III‐Li3C12 are phonon‐mediated superconductors with high transition temperatures (Tc) of 18, 12, 3.4, and 14 K, respectively. The EPC of type‐I‐Li2C6, type‐I‐Li2C8, and type‐III‐Li3C12 mainly arises from the coupling of the C‐2pz electron states with the low‐frequency (0–800 cm−1) deposition‐Lixy/Liz, and out‐of‐plane‐Cz vibrations. In contrast, the high‐frequency (800–1600 cm−1) vibration modes of in‐plane‐Cxy atoms are mainly responsible for the Tc of type‐II‐LiC4. The findings provide comprehensive insights into the superconductivity limit of Li‐doped graphene.

Pressure-induced superconductivity in CaC2

Abstract:Carbon can exist as isolated dumbbell, 1D chain, 2D plane, and 3D network in carbon solids or carbon-based compounds, which attributes to its rich chemical binding way, including sp-, sp(2)-, and sp(3)-hybridized bonds. sp(2)-hybridizing carbon always captures special attention due to its unique physical and chemical property. Here, using an evolutionary algorithm in conjunction with ab initio method, we found that, under compression, dumbbell carbon in CaC2 can be polymerized first into 1D chain and then into ribbon and further into 2D graphite sheet at higher pressure. The C2/m structure transforms into an orthorhombic Cmcm phase at 0.5 GPa, followed by another orthorhombic Immm phase, which is stabilized in a wide pressure range of 15.2-105.8 GPa and then forced into MgB2-type phase with wide range stability up to at least 1 TPa. Strong electron-phonon coupling λ in compressed CaC2 is found, in particular for Immm phase, which has the highest λ value (0.562-0.564) among them, leading to its high superconducting critical temperature Tc (7.9∼9.8 K), which is comparable with the 11.5 K value of CaC6. Our results show that calcium not only can stabilize carbon sp(2) hybridization at a larger range of pressure but also can contribute in superconducting behavior, which would further ignite experimental and theoretical interest in alkaline-earth metal carbides to uncover their peculiar physical properties under extreme conditions.
Superconducting Single-Layer T-graphene and Novel Synthesis Routes

Abstract:Single-layer superconductors are ideal materials for fabricating superconducting nano devices. However, up to date, very few single-layer elemental superconductors have been predicted and especially no one has been successfully synthesized yet. Here, using crystal structure search techniques and ab initio calculations, we predict that a single-layer planar carbon sheet with 4- and 8-membered rings called T-graphene is a new intrinsic elemental superconductor with superconducting critical temperature (Tc) up to around 20.8 K. More importantly, we propose a synthesis route to obtain such a single-layer T-graphene, that is, a T-graphene potassium intercalation compound (C4K with P4/mmm symmetry) is firstly synthesized at high pressure (>11.5GPa) and then quenched to ambient condition; and finally, the single-layer T-graphene can be either exfoliated using the electrochemical method from the bulk C4K, or peeled off from bulk T-graphite C4, where C4 can be obtained from C4K by evaporating the K atoms. Interestingly, we find that the calculated Tc of C4K is about 30.4K at 0GPa, which sets a new record for layered carbon-based superconductors. The present findings add a new class of carbon based superconductors. In particular, once the single-layer T-graphene is synthesized, it can pave the way for fabricating superconducting devices together with other 2D materials using the layer-by-layer growth techniques.

Abstract:Superconductors are important materials in the field of low-temperature magnet applications and long-distance electrical power transmission systems. Besides metal-based superconducting materials, carbon-based superconductors have attracted considerable attention in recent years. Up to now, five allotropes of carbon, including diamond, graphite, C60, CNTs, and graphene, have been reported to show superconducting behavior. However, most of the carbon-based superconductors are limited to small size and discontinuous phases, which inevitably hinders further application in macroscopic form. Therefore, it raises a question of whether continuously carbon-based superconducting wires could be accessed, which is of vital importance from viewpoints of fundamental research and practical application. Here, inspired by superconducting graphene, we successfully fabricated flexible graphene-based superconducting fibers via a well-established calcium (Ca) intercalation strategy. The resultant Ca-intercalated graphene fiber (Ca-GF) shows a superconducting transition at ∼11 K, which is almost 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of early reported alkali metal intercalated graphite and comparable to that of commercial superconducting NbTi wire. The combination of lightness and easy scalability makes Ca-GF highly promising as a lightweight superconducting wire.
Multigap superconductivity in lithium intercalated bilayer Mo$_2$C

Abstract:Interlayer coupling can significantly influence the physical properties of layered transition metal compounds. The superconductivity in layered Mo$_2$C systems, belonging to the emergent family of MXene, has garnered considerable attention. However, the impact of interlayer coupling on superconductivity, and the anisotropic superconducting properties in these systems are not yet clear. By performing first-principles calculations of electron-phonon coupling and anisotropic superconducting properties, we show that the interlayer coupling in bilayer 1$T$-Mo$_2$C suppresses superconductivity, resulting in a significant drop in superconducting transition temperature ($T_{\mathrm{c}}$) from 4.2 $K$ in its monolayer form to nearly 0 $K$. By introducing lithium atoms into the interlayer space of the bilayer, the interlayer coupling can be effectively weakened, transforming the system into a two-gap superconductor with a $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ above 10 $K$. A 3\% tensile strain can further transform the system into a three-gap superconductor with a significantly enhanced $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ of approximately 24.7 $K$, which is very high in the Mo$_2$C related systems. The enhancement of the superconductivity induced by the strain is mainly due to the downshift of an energy band with a flat dispersion to the energy near the Fermi level. The in-plane vibrations of Mo atoms and the $d$-orbital electrons of Mo atoms are most important for the formation of the superconductivity. Our method can also be applied to multilayer Mo$_2$C systems. Given the successful synthesis of layered Mo$_2$C systems and the experimental realization of alkaline metal atom depositions, our work presents a practically feasible strategy for achieving high $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ and multigap superconductivity in layered Mo$_2$C.

Abstract:Within first-principles calculations, we explore superconductivity in Ca-intercalated bilayer silicene compound, Si2CaSi2. This arises from the coupling of interlayer flower-like \Gamma-centered Fermi surface formed by the hybridization of Ca-3d and Si-3pz orbitals with low-energy out-of-plane vibrations enabled by silicene's buckling. The consequent large electron-phonon coupling, as evident from the Eliashberg spectral function leads to superconductivity below 5.4 K in this two-dimensional covalent system. Our results reveal the key control parameters to achieve superconductivity in experimentally synthesizable silicon-based thin materials that can find diverse applications.

Abstract:In this letter we report the discovery of superconductivity in the isostructural graphite intercalation compounds C6Yb and C6Ca, with transition temperatures of 6.5K and 11.5K respectively. A structural characterisation of these compounds shows them to be hexagonal layered systems in the same class as other graphite intercalates. If we assume that all the outer s-electrons are transferred from the intercalant to the graphite sheets, then the charge transfer in these compounds is comparable to other superconducting graphite intercalants such as C8K 1,2 . However, the superconducting transition temperatures of C6Yb and C6Ca are up to two orders of magnitude greater. Interestingly, superconducting upper critical field studies and resistivity measurements suggest that these compounds are significantly more isotropic than pure graphite. This is unexpected as the effect of introducing the intercalant is to move the graphite layer further apart.

Abstract:The discovery of superconductivity in CaC6 with a critical temperature (Tc) of 11.5 K reignites much interest in exploring high-temperature superconductivity in graphite intercalation compounds (GICs). Here we identify a GIC NaC4, discovered by ab initio evolutionary structure search, as a superconductor with a computed Tc of 41.2 K at 5 GPa. This value is eight times higher than that of the synthesized GIC NaC2 and possesses the highest Tc among available GICs. The remarkable superconductivity of GIC NaC4 mainly arises from the coupling of {\pi} electrons in graphene with the low-frequency vibrations involving both Na and C atoms. These findings suggest that Na-GICs may hold great promise as high-Tc superconductors.

Abstract:The two-dimensional (2D) materials provide an excellent platform for the study of the dimensional effect. The richer the types of 2D materials, the broader the unknown field we can explore. However, among the large number of 2D materials manufactured by humans, true single-crystalline (SC) atomically thin 2D metals are rare. The instability of SC 2D metal materials puts high demands on its fabrication process. By implementing molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we proved that the SC biatomic-layer (BL) gallium film can be formed at the interface between two graphene layers. The Ga atoms deposited on the surface of the graphene on the copper substrate will spontaneously evolve into independent liquid nano-islands, and then cover the nano-island with a monolayer graphene. When the Ga nano-islands confined under the graphene layer are heated to 500 °C, they will expand into a BL Ga film, and finally, the entire system is cooled to room temperature to obtain the SCBL Ga film. It is found that these nano-islands are in the liquid state at ∼400 °C, but they undergo a phase transition and evolve into the solid state at ∼500°C. At the same time, the nano-islands also drop from 3D to 2D. In addition, the vertical heterostructure with moiré superstructure is formed between the SCBL Ga and the top layer graphene. The calculations of the electronic properties show that the Dirac conical point of the graphene in the heterostructure is shifted below the Fermi level, which proves that SCBL Ga is able to induce semimetallic to metallic conversion in graphene, indicating SCBL Ga can be used for metal contacts in 2D devices.

Three-gap superconductivity with $T_{c}$ above 80 K in hydrogenated 2D monolayer LiBC

Abstract:Although the metalization of semiconductor bulk LiBC has been experimentally achieved, various flaws, including the strong lattice distortion, the uncontrollability of phase transition under pressure, usually appear. In this work, based on the first-principles calculations, we propose a new way of hydrogenation to realize metalization. Using the fully anisotropic Migdal-Eliashberg theory, we investigate the superconducting behaviors in the stable monolayers LiBCH and LiCBH, in which C and B atoms are hydrogenated, respectively. Our findings indicate that the monolayers possess the high $T_{c}$ of 82.0 and 82.5 K, respectively, along with the interesting three-gap superconducting natures. The Fermi sheets showing the obvious three-region distribution characteristics and the abnormally strong electron-phonon coupling (EPC) are responsible for the high-$T_{c}$ three-gap superconductivity. Furthermore, the $T_{c}$ can be dramatically boosted up to 120.0 K under 3.5 \% tensile strain. To a great extent, the high $T_{c}$ is beyond the liquid nitrogen temperature ($77$ K), which is beneficial for the applications in future experiments. This study not only explores the superconducting properties of the monolayers LiBCH and LiCBH, but also offers practical insights into the search for high-$T_{c}$ superconductors.

Theoretical prediction of superconductivity in monolayer h-BN doped with alkaline-earth metals (Ca, Sr, Ba)

Abstract:We investigated the possibility of superconductivity in monolayer hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) doped using group-1 (Li, Na, K) and group-2 (Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) atoms via ab initio calculations. Consequently, we reveal that Sr- and Ba-doped monolayer h-BN and Ca-doped monolayer h-BN with 3.5% tensile strain are energetically stable and become superconductors with superconducting transition temperature (Tc) values of 5.83, 1.53, and 10.7 K, respectively, which are considerably higher than those of Ca-, Sr-, and Ba-doped graphene. In addition, the momentum-resolved electron–phonon coupling (EPC) constant shows that the scattering among intrinsic π* electrons around the Γ point governs Tc. The scattering process is mediated by the low-energy vibration of the adsorbate. Moreover, compared with graphene, the stronger adsorbate–substrate interaction and lower symmetry in h-BN are critical for enhancing the EPC in doped h-BN.
New-record-Tc and three-gap 2D superconductors with electronic and phononic topology: KB2C2

Abstract:Pursuing higher-temperature superconductors under ambient pressure continues to be a prominent topic in materials discovery. Isomorphic structures like MgB2 exhibit potential for conventional BCS-type superconductivity, but their transition temperatures (Tc) have remained below 100 K based on both experimental findings and theoretical predictions. In this study, two new two-dimensional (2D) superconductors with sandwich structures,KB2C2,featuring BC layers in AA and AB stacking configurations,are designed, whose Tc can exceed 112 K,setting a new record in 2D superconductors. The analyses suggest that electrons in {\sigma}-states covalent bonds and high-frequency E phonon modes dominated by the in-plane vibrations of B/C atoms are predominately responsible for electron-phonon coupling (EPC). An exciting robust three-gap superconducting nature stems from the strong and evident three-region distribution characteristic of electronic EPC parameters {\lambda}. When biaxial tensile strain (BTS) is applied, their Tc are boosted above 153 K. The increase in Tc originates from the softening of optical E phonon modes around the {\Gamma} point and acoustic modes around the Q point, rather than an increase of electrons at the Fermi level (EF ) as observed in other similar systems. Thus, phonon plays a more beneficial role in the EPC of BTS cases, highlighting its significance as a medium in BCS superconductors. Moreover, we find KB2C2 exhibits interesting topological properties, spin antivortex, and Ising-type spin splitting. This is the first report of the coexistence of nontrivial topology and superconductivity with such a high Tc. Therefore, KB2C2 may offer promising sandwich structures to explore higher-Tc 2D superconductors, alongside present potential avenues for investigating fundamental quantum physics.

Abstract:The possible emergence of superconductivity in layered metal boride carbide compounds MB2C2 (M = Sc, Y, Be, Ca) was investigated using density functional theory calculations upon the topology of a boron-carbon network and the nature of the metal. ScB2C2 and YB2C2 show metallic and superconductive properties with low critical temperatures (Tcs). The semiconducting BeB2C2 compound may show superconductivity upon carrier doping with a high Tc of 47.8 K by hole doping─comparable to the structurally related MgB2 superconductor─but with a low Tc by electron doping. In contrast, the semiconducting CaB2C2 compound is predicted to be a superconductor by hole and electron doping but with low Tcs. These differences arise from the spatial distribution of electrons at the Fermi level. For compounds with low Tcs, electrons at the Fermi level are localized primarily on B and C π states perpendicular to the BC layers, experiencing minimal influence from atomic oscillations and resulting in weak electron-phonon interactions. Conversely, for a high Tc, electrons are found in σ-bonding states, leading to strong electron-phonon interactions. Electrons at the Fermi level in boron-carbon σ-bonding states seem to be a prerequisite to expect high Tc superconductivity in this kind of compound.
