Abstract:Background: The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic created challenges for healthcare providers, especially dental professionals in practices and universities. This study investigated dental students' concerns about COVID-19 and whether institutional communication influenced pandemic-related stressors. Methods: An online survey designed to elicit dental students' concerns about COVID-19 was distributed to all dental students enrolled at a private non-profit academic institution in the Western United States from 26 April 2021 to 25 August 2021. Descriptive statistics were used to characterize the respondents, and Chi-square test and z-test analyses were used to compare students' experiences. Results: A total of 92 dental students answered the survey. The respondents' ages ranged from 22 to 47 years. Slightly more than half (50.5%) were male and 93.3% were non-Hispanic or non-Latino. Over one-fourth of the students (27.5%) reported that they either often or always felt anxious that they might become infected with the COVID-19 virus, with 16.3% of the students expressing concern about contracting COVID-19 while on campus. There were no statistically significant differences in anxiety levels about contracting COVID-19 from clinic patients or while on campus between the group of students who perceived the institution communicated effectively and those who did not. However, students who felt that the dental school clearly communicated COVID-19 protocols were more likely to believe that students took protocols seriously and expressed less concern about contracting COVID-19 by touching dental school items. Conclusions: About one-quarter of dental students expressed high levels of anxiety about being infected with COVID-19. Clear communication about COVID-19 protocols reduced students' fear of contracting COVID-19 from dental school items and strengthened their belief that other students followed protocols.

Abstract:Purpose Although the threat of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) was the same at different US dental schools, the response wasn't. There is no study that documents the variation in mitigation strategies, COVID‐19 transmission, and clinical educational changes at US Dental schools during the ongoing pandemic that began in 2020 in the US. Methods The current study was approved as exempt research (project number HUM00199261). Our survey of Associate Dean's of Clinical Operations was individually emailed in July 2021. There were no reminders and descriptive statistics were calculated using Microsoft Excel. Results We received 46 completed surveys from the 68 sent out. Note that 65.2% of respondents reported requiring N95 masks for aerosol‐generating procedures. Note that 38.9% of respondents said they required student partnering as chairside dental assistants for aerosol‐generating procedures. Note that 37.7% of respondents began using alternate cubicles. A total of 6.52% of schools reported a transmission of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 virus from patient to provider. There were no reported transmissions from provider to patient or from patient to patient. Conclusion In our study, we found a lot of similarities between the approach taken by Dental School Clinics across the US to mitigate the risks of COVID‐19, however, we also observed many differences.

Abstract:Objective Dental regulatory bodies aim to ensure the health and safety of dentists, dental staff patients and the public. An important responsibility during a pandemic is to communicate risk and guidelines for patient care. Limited data exist on the perceptions and experiences of dentists navigating new guidelines for mitigating risk in dental care during the pandemic. The objective of this study was to use a qualitative approach to explore how dentists in Canada experienced and perceived their regulatory bodies' communication about COVID‐19 risks and guidelines during the pandemic. Methods Participants were Canadian dentists (N = 644) recruited through the email roster of nine provincial dental associations or regulatory bodies. This qualitative analysis was nested within a prospective longitudinal cohort study in which data were collected using online questionnaires at regular intervals from August 2020 to November 2021. To address the objective reported in this paper, a conventional qualitative content analysis method was applied to responses to three open‐ended questions included in the final questionnaire. Results Participants encountered challenges and frustrations amid the COVID‐19 pandemic, grappling with diverse regulations and communications from dental bodies. While some bodies offered helpful guidance, many participants felt the need for improved communication on guidelines. Dentists urged for expedited, clearer and more frequent updates, expressing difficulty in navigating overwhelming information. Negative views emerged on the vague and unclear communication of COVID‐19 guidelines, contributing to confusion and frustration among participants. Conclusion As COVID‐19 persists and in planning for future pandemics, these experiential findings will help guide regulatory bodies in providing clear, timely and practical guidelines to protect the health and safety of dentists, dental staff, patients and the public.

Abstract:COVID-19 pandemic led to major life changes. We assessed the psychological impact of COVID-19 on dental academics globally and on changes in their behaviors.We invited dental academics to complete a cross-sectional, online survey from March to May 2020. The survey was based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). The survey collected data on participants' stress levels (using the Impact of Event Scale), attitude (fears, and worries because of COVID-19 extracted by Principal Component Analysis (PCA), perceived control (resulting from training on public health emergencies), norms (country-level COVID-19 fatality rate), and personal and professional backgrounds. We used multilevel regression models to assess the association between the study outcome variables (frequent handwashing and avoidance of crowded places) and explanatory variables (stress, attitude, perceived control and norms).1862 academics from 28 countries participated in the survey (response rate = 11.3%). Of those, 53.4% were female, 32.9% were <46 years old and 9.9% had severe stress. PCA extracted three main factors: fear of infection, worries because of professional responsibilities, and worries because of restricted mobility. These factors had significant dose-dependent association with stress and were significantly associated with more frequent handwashing by dental academics (B = 0.56, 0.33, and 0.34) and avoiding crowded places (B = 0.55, 0.30, and 0.28). Low country fatality rates were significantly associated with more handwashing (B = -2.82) and avoiding crowded places (B = -6.61). Training on public health emergencies was not significantly associated with behavior change (B = -0.01 and -0.11).COVID-19 had a considerable psychological impact on dental academics. There was a direct, dose-dependent association between change in behaviors and worries but no association between these changes and training on public health emergencies. More change in behaviors was associated with lower country COVID-19 fatality rates. Fears and stresses were associated with greater adoption of preventive measures against the pandemic.

Abstract:Background The primary aim of the study is to assess how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected dental education for students and teachers, particularly concerning the efficiency of online teaching strategies for both clinical and academic outcomes. Additionally, it also emphasizes psychological behavior like stress and anxiety in the post-pandemic era due to academic pressure. Materials and methods The study included 300 undergraduate dental students from various years of studying and 31 teachers actively teaching in dental college from all nine departments. The questionnaire was created in Google Forms for both students and teachers. The questionnaire contained various aspects of an education system that was adopted post-pandemic. The questions were given to evaluate the opinions of students as well as teachers to understand which method of teaching is preferable for them. Whether it's an online method of teaching or the offline mode, out of which the majority of respondents preferred the offline method of teaching. Result Most of the respondents agreed that the pandemic had affected their academic as well as clinical performance. Online mode of learning was not as effective as face-to-face learning. It did not affect the students clinically but mentally, which made them more anxious and stressed out during their studies and preparation for exams. Teachers too had to face a lot of problems from technical aspects while teaching online which led to mental stress and anxiety. This study re-emphasizes the negative impact of COVID-19 on dental education. It also further highlights the more fundamental changes and improvements that are desperately needed in the education system to adapt and overcome the current pandemic situation and future such events. Conclusion The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted educational institutions, curricula, and clinical practice. Dental students are particularly vulnerable, and online education platforms in India face challenges in regulation. The quality of materials, technical assistance, and expertise in online classes significantly impact teaching and learning experiences. The pandemic has led to concerns about students and staff contracting the disease, creating a skill gap in dental graduates, and loss of clinical exposure, causing more anxiety. To address these concerns, regular, open, and compassionate communication with students is essential. Educational institutions must undergo a transformation to adapt to the pandemic and potential future disasters.

Abstract:Background: COVID-19 is an ongoing pandemic outbreak of which has brought about dynamic changes in health-care delivery systems. Dental treatment often includes direct contact with patient’s oral mucosa, blood, damaged, skin, or saliva. Therefore, the risk of exposure to viral infections is high in dental professionals. Hence, it is essential to gain an insight into dental student’s knowledge and attitude toward COVID/HIV patients. In this study, we assessed the mental attitude of dental students recently exposed to clinical settings for the management of COVID-19-positive patients in comparison with HIV-positive patients. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a peer-reviewed closed-ended questionnaire designed to assess the knowledge regarding HIV and COVID-19 including 11 items that were answered using a five-point Likert scale. Results: 90.59% of students agreed to statements in the questionnaire that included 11 items based on prevention and control, stigma, revision of guidelines, risk factors, transmission, and HIV with COVID-19 coinfection. 74.6% of students are aware of the probable causes of high mortality rate in patients with HIV and COVID-19 coinfection. Conclusion: With this study, we conclude that dental students newly exposed to clinical setups are well aware of the necessary precautionary measures, changed methods of treatment, and impact of both the viruses. But have an unprofessional approach towards their management. Refresher courses for practicing dentists on new infection control strategies and curriculum in dental schools should be expanded to include competencies in pandemics and disaster relief. Effective training modules should be designed and incorporated in the academics to imbibe professional attitude in young clinicians.

Abstract:Abstract Background: To compare the contingency modifications to the dental education between the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry and the Zhejiang University School of Stomatology during COVID-19 pandemic, and to share experiences in keeping the dental academic continuity, resuming practicing activities and preparing the faculty and students for a new normality. Three approaches were adopted to collect information and data: online interviews and email-contact with the instructors and the deans, a small-scale online survey of dental students, and official online announcements of various authorities. Results: The two universities shared similarity in changing trends, while differed in details. The delivery of lectures, seminars and exams was transitioned from in-person mode to online mode and has proceeded effectively and efficiently. The pre-clinical lab training and clinical rotation were the most retarded parts and will not be resumed until the settle-down of the pandemic. Research activities have been kept on at the best possible level. Since the Zhejiang University reopened the campus in May 2020, clinical activities and research works were in recovery with a cautiously-planned and gradual phased approach. Conclusion: Both universities have been trying their best to meet the academic needs of students while protect their health, and to keep alert to the real time epidemic situation in preparation for resumption. Dental institutions could take the COVID-19 pandemic as an opportunity to armor dental students with infection control measures prior to their reengagement into clinical practice. There is a need of a new normality for global dental education that spans time and space.

Abstract:ObjectivesWith the emergence of the COVID‐19 pandemic in Canada and the curtailment of clinical and face‐to‐face university instruction in British Columbia on March 16, 2020, the opportunity arose to explore how third‐ and fourth‐year undergraduate dental students critically considered the impact of the pandemic on education and the practice of dental geriatrics.MethodsAll third‐ and fourth‐year undergraduate dental students within a dental geriatric module were asked to provide a written guided reflection on the question: "In your opinion, what factors make outbreaks (or pandemics) like COVID‐19 relevant to the practice of dental geriatrics?" Reflections were gathered from March 12 to May 8, 2020. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify and interpret patterns of meaning within the reflections by means of an interactive coding process.ResultsA total of 115 reflections, between 291 and 710 words each, were received from 56 third‐year (62.5% male) and 59 fourth‐year (42.6% male) students. Five main themes emerged: experiencing uncertainties, frailty as a moderator, constraints in accessing care, preparedness protocol, and redefining care. The frequency in which the same codes, categories, and themes were assigned varied from 16 to 140 times.ConclusionsStudents' reflections highlighted the effects of the pandemic, not only on their education but also on frail older adults themselves and the profession of dentistry in general. Further studies are warranted to explore how this curtailment might impact educators' approaches to geriatric education, as well as the way graduating students will set up their practices and approach geriatric care in the future.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic spread rapidly across the globe, leading governments to impose prolonged lockdowns on both movement and commerce. Although lockdowns decrease the rates of novel infections, they can have devastating consequences on the economy and employment levels. One of the most severely affected sectors during this crisis has been dental medicine. Dental professionals are uniquely exposed to environments with high levels of occupational hazards, conferring additional risks of viral exposure and transmission. We analyzed 506 anonymous questionnaires completed by dentists and residents regarding acceptance of a future potential SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. Our results demonstrate a statistically significant correlation between the individual's unemployment rate and their willingness to inoculate with a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine when it becomes available. This information can be used to predict trends of vaccine acceptance or rejection based on economic burden during the COVID-19 pandemic by different sectors as part of the preparedness toward global vaccination programs.

Abstract:There is an established role for post-operative radiotherapy in the treatment of benign and malignant salivary gland tumours. For benign disease, the addition of radiotherapy improves local tumour control in cases with incomplete excision, involved surgical margins or multi-focal disease recurrence. After capsule rupture or spillage alone, surveillance should usually be advised. For malignant disease, post-operative radiotherapy is recommended for an advanced tumour stage, high-grade tumour, perineural or lympho-vascular invasion, close or positive resection margins, extra-parotid extension or lymph node involvement. The main benefit is increased loco-regional tumour control, although this may translate into a modest improvement in survival. The possible late side effects of parotid bed irradiation include skin changes, chronic otitis externa, sensorineural hearing loss, osteoradionecrosis and secondary malignancy. Severe complications are rare, but patients should be counselled carefully about the risks. Primary radiotherapy is unlikely to be curative and is reserved to cases in which resection would cause unacceptable functional or cosmetic morbidity or would likely result in subtotal resection (R2) or to patients with distant metastases to gain local tumour control. There are provisional data on the use of charged particle radiotherapy in this setting. Some patients may benefit from synchronous chemotherapy with radiotherapy, but this group is not defined, and data from comparative prospective studies are required before routine clinical use of this treatment.
A national cross-sectional survey of public perceptions, knowledge, and behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Efforts to mitigate the global spread of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) have largely relied on broad compliance with public health recommendations yet navigating the high volume of evolving information and misinformation related to SARS-CoV-2 can be challenging. We assessed national public perceptions (e.g., severity, concerns, health), knowledge (e.g., transmission, information sources), and behaviors (e.g., physical distancing) related to COVID-19 in Canada to understand public perspectives and inform future public health initiatives. Methods We administered a national online survey with the goal of obtaining responses from 2000 adults residing in Canada. Respondent sampling was stratified by age, sex, and region. We used descriptive statistics to summarize respondent characteristics and tested for significant overall regional differences using chi-squared tests and t-tests, as appropriate. Results We collected 1,996 eligible questionnaires between April 26 th and May 1 st , 2020. One-fifth (20%) of respondents knew someone diagnosed with COVID-19, but few had tested positive themselves (0.6%). Negative impacts of pandemic conditions were evidenced in several areas, including concerns about healthcare (e.g. sufficient equipment, 52%), pandemic stress (45%), and worsening social (49%) and mental/emotional (39%) health. Most respondents (88%) felt they had good to excellent knowledge of virus transmission, and predominantly accessed (74%) and trusted (60%) Canadian news television, newspapers/magazines, or non-government news websites for COVID-19 information. We found high compliance with distancing measures (80% either self-isolating or always physical distancing). We identified regional differences in perceptions, knowledge, and behaviors related to COVID-19. Discussion We found that knowledge about COVID-19 is largely acquired through domestic news sources, which may explain high self-reported compliance with prevention measures. The results highlight the broader impact of a pandemic on the general public’s overall health and wellbeing, outside of personal infection. The study findings should be used to inform public health communications during COVID-19 and future pandemics.
Dental Education With the COVID-19 Pandemic: Ghanaian Dental Students' Experience

Abstract:Introduction: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all Ghanaian tertiary institutions were closed down and resorted to online teaching. This posed a challenge for dental education due to requirements of clinical tutoring and patient handling. This study explored the experiences of dental students with the change in teaching methods during the pandemic with the aim of assessing their effectiveness and explore measures for their improvement. Materials and methods: This was an online survey involving undergraduate dental students in the two dental schools in Ghana. An e-questionnaire was sent out to all the students, exploring their knowledge of and response to the pandemic and assessing the impact of measures implemented during the pandemic to assist them complete their education. Results: Two hundred out of 412 students participated in the study giving a response rate of 48.5%; however, completed responses were available for 195 students, 123 (63.1%) from the University of Ghana Dental School and 72 (36.9%) from the Kwame Nkrumah University School of Medicine and Dentistry. There were 106 (54.4%) females;108 participants (54.4%) were pre-clinical students. One hundred and sixty-four (84%) respondents believed dental professionals had a higher risk of contagion because of proximity to patients during treatment and 115(59.0%) reported being fearful of performing clinical procedures. The students demonstrated adequate knowledge of the disease and a positive attitude towards the required changes instituted because of the pandemic. They however, highlighted technical obstacles and distraction as some of their challenges. The quality of internet was acceptable, but the volume of data was inadequate to meet their needs. Also, though both Universities had their own recommended learning management systems, Zoom was the preferred online learning platform. Conclusions: Generally, the students demonstrated a positive attitude towards the required changes. A blended educational approach may continue to be ideal for dental education as we adapt to this pandemic. Innovative ways may need to be sought to improve the online experience and the University approved online learning management systems enhanced to make them more user friendly.
Personal protective beliefs and behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic at a large, multi-campus, public university in Pennsylvania: a cross-sectional survey

Abstract:Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic impacted many higher education institutions. Understanding the personal protective beliefs and behaviors surrounding public health measures such as face masking, social distancing, and handwashing helps to inform public health outreach measures. Objective: This study evaluates the beliefs and occurrences of face masking, social distancing, and handwashing behaviors among people at a multi-campus, public university in Pennsylvania. Methods: From October 5-November 30, 2021, a 10-minute REDCap survey was available to students, faculty, and staff 18 years of age and older at the Pennsylvania State University (PSU). Recruitment included targeted email, social media, digital advertisements, and university newspapers. 4,231 responses were received. Simple percentage associations between the selected factors and face masking behaviors as well as beliefs on the origin of the COVID-19 virus were made with IBM SPSS Statistics, version 29.0.2.0 (20). Results: Of 3,662 completed surveys, 65.2% of respondents were positive that facemasks prevented the transmission of airborne disease, 49.9% of the respondents stated that they wore facemasks always (27.9%), almost always (26.9%), or often (11.1%). 65.3% believed social distancing prevented transmission of COVID-19, 57.5% reported social distancing while on-campus or out in public (always: 18.8%, almost always: 20.3%, often: 18.4%). The response rate for some level of conscientiously washing hands for the 20 second duration was 87.5% (always: 26.0%, almost always: 31.9%, sometimes: 19.9%, only after being out in public: 4.9%, and only when convenient: 4.8%). Conclusions: Beliefs in public health and safety measures during the COVID-19 pandemic did not always match the behaviors of individuals surveyed. Understanding barriers to performing behaviors or public health safety may help inform future areas for targeted intervention.
Perception of Virtual Education Learning among Dental Residents and Faculty during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:Objectives: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic prompted a rapid shift from in-person to virtual learning in dental education. This study aims to assess the perceptions of virtual education learning among dental residents and faculty and employ regulatory focus theory (RFT) to understand the impact of motivational orientations on virtual learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: In total, 46 dental residents and 10 faculty members in a dental institution participated in the study (June-August 2021). Questionnaires were used to obtain data on demographics, perceptions of virtual learning, burnout, and RFT types (promotion and prevention focus). Multiple regression analyses were used to examine factors associated with perceptions of virtual learning and burnout. Results: Overall, 70% of residents and 44% of faculty found virtual learning effective. Younger residents with less experience preferred virtual learning more than their older, experienced peers. Residents trained outside the U.S. and Canada favored in-person learning more than those trained within. Furthermore, residents with a higher promotion focus score found virtual learning more interactive for didactic courses. Additionally, 52% of residents experienced burnout, with a higher incidence among females (p = 0.044). Conclusions: Virtual learning is well received by dental residents and faculty, with potential for continued use post-pandemic. Future efforts should focus on creating an inclusive and supportive educational environment that meets the motivational and well-being needs of dental residents and faculty.

Abstract:Aims The dentistry program is extremely demanding mentally and physically. Consequently, it can induce high levels of stress, anxiety and depression in students. There is some research in measuring these ramifications on dental students, but they lack the influence of the COVID‐19 pandemic which has brought about many fundamental changes to the curriculum of dental students. The aim of this study was to assess dental students' mental health through the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS‐21) during the COVID‐19 pandemic in an Australian dental School. Methods The Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours) students enrolled in years 2–5 were requested to complete an online questionnaire that included the DASS‐21 and additional questions regarding the impact of COVID‐19 on quality of life. Jamovi was utilized to conduct descriptive data analysis. Results 179 students completed the survey with 81 males (45%) and 98 females (55%). 70.4% of the participants described elevated anxiety for the health of their loved ones and themselves during the COVID‐19 pandemic. The overall mean DASS‐21 scores were 7.1 (5.07) in depression, 4.9 (4.00) in anxiety and 6.5 (4.32) in stress. Conclusions The results indicate that the COVID‐19 pandemic negatively impacted the mental health of dental students. While further research is still required, it is important for universities to recognize how this pandemic affected the mental wellbeing of students so that they can implement appropriate support programs and improve dental education. Clinical relevance The COVID‐19 pandemic has had a profound impact on social and mental health worldwide, and dental students are notably affected. Recognized as a psychological risk factor, COVID‐19 has been linked to an increased rate of suicidal deaths. This paper underlines the importance of recognizing the full scope of the pandemic's impact on dental students, including their views and the potential effects on their physical and mental health. The study indicates a pressing need for more robust support from the organizations to improve the mental health and overall well‐being of dental students.

Abstract:Efforts to mitigate the global spread of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causing Corona Virus Disease-19 (COVID-19) have largely relied on broad compliance with public health recommendations yet navigating the high volume of evolving information can be challenging. We assessed self-reported public perceptions related to COVID-19 including, beliefs (e.g., severity, concerns, health), knowledge (e.g., transmission, information sources), and behaviors (e.g., physical distancing) to understand perspectives in Canada and to inform future public health initiatives.We administered a national online survey aiming to obtain responses from 2000 adults in Canada. Respondent sampling was stratified by age, sex, and region. We used descriptive statistics to summarize responses and tested for regional differences using chi-squared tests, followed by weighted logistic regression.We collected 1,996 eligible questionnaires between April 26th and May 1st, 2020. One-fifth (20%) of respondents knew someone diagnosed with COVID-19, but few had tested positive themselves (0.6%). Negative impacts of pandemic conditions were evidenced in several areas, including concerns about healthcare (e.g. sufficient equipment, 52%), pandemic stress (45%), and worsening social (49%) and mental/emotional (39%) health. Most respondents (88%) felt they had good to excellent knowledge of virus transmission, and predominantly accessed (74%) and trusted (60%) Canadian news television, newspapers/magazines, or non-government news websites for COVID-19 information. We found high compliance with distancing measures (80% reported self-isolating or always physical distancing). We identified associations between region and self-reported beliefs, knowledge, and behaviors related to COVID-19.We found that information about COVID-19 is largely acquired through domestic news sources, which may explain high self-reported compliance with prevention measures. The results highlight the broader impact of a pandemic on the general public's overall health and wellbeing, outside of personal infection. The study findings should be used to inform public health communications during COVID-19 and future pandemics.

Abstract:Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted various sectors, including healthcare. The dental profession has faced unprecedented challenges in providing care while minimizing the risk of transmission. The aim of the study is to assess how patient's perception of hygiene in the dental field has changed since COVID-19. In detail, it has been analyzed patient's attention to hygiene and how in his opinion the dental practice changed its procedures after COVID-19. Methods: A questionnaire consisting of 10 multiple-choice questions was submitted to 509 subjects, patients of several dental practices. These were related to: 1) change in their perception of hygiene after COVID-19; 2) how the office they usually go to has changed and what hygiene standards it has adopted; 3) vaccination against COVID-19. Descriptive analyses of all variables in the questionnaire were performed, and statistical analyses between variables were carried out by Chi-square test and Fisher's Exact Test. Results: Most patients (75.8%) stated that they had changed their perception of hygiene after the onset of COVID-19. They reported that they had experienced changes in hygiene procedures at their usual dental practice (70.7%), including rinsing with chlorhexidine mouthwash, continuous air and water disinfection and use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Vaccination of practitioners was considered to be important by 73.5% of participants. Conclusions: In the present study it was analyzed how emergence of the new Coronavirus has considerably changed the perception of patient hygiene within the dental practice. As a result of the awareness implemented to prevent virus transmission, patients are paying more attention to hygiene and preventive procedures to protect their health.
