Abstract:Interfacial shear strength determines the load transfer efficiency between nanofillers and polymer matrix, and thus the overall mechanical performance of polymer nanocomposites. Through atomistic simulations, this work systematically assessed the sliding behaviours of one-dimensional carbon nanothread (NTH) from a bundle configuration embedded in the poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix. It is found that the functionalized NTH exhibits remarkably enhanced interfacial shear strengths due to the strong mechanical interlocking effect, about an order of magnitude higher than the pristine sample. However, excess volume is generated within a functionalized bundle structure, leading to a weaker non-bonded interaction for a functionalized NTH within the bundle than that only embedded in the polymer matrix. With covalent cross-linking, the surrounding NTHs can be simultaneously dragged out from the PMMA matrix while pulling out the central NTH. Such phenomenon attributes to the filler-filler interactions and filler-matrix interactions. Further studies reveal that no extra free volume is generated within the bundle structure at high temperatures, which retains the effective load transfer efficiency. In comparison, free volume tends to be generated at the interface between NTHs and PMMA matrix at a higher temperature. These findings could be beneficial for fibre design and high-performance polymer nanocomposites with 1D nanomaterials.
Mechanical Properties of Single‐Layer Diamond Reinforced Poly(vinyl Alcohol) Nanocomposites Through Atomistic Simulation

Abstract:Low-dimensional carbon nanostructures are ideal nanofillers to reinforce the mechanical performance of polymer nanocomposites due to their excellent mechanical properties. Through molecular dynamics simulations, the mechanical performance of poly(vinyl alchohol) (PVA) nanocomposites reinforced with a single-layer diamond - diamane is investigated. It is found the PVA/diamane exhibits similar interfacial strengths and pull-out characteristics with the PVA/bilayer-graphene counterpart. Specifically, when the nanofiller is fully embedded in the nanocomposite, it is unable to deform simultaneously with the PVA matrix due to the weak interfacial load transfer efficiency, thus the enhancement effect is not significant. In comparison, diamane can effectively promote the tensile properties of the nanocomposite when it has a laminated structure as it deforms simultaneously with the matrix. With this configuration, the interlayer sp(3) bonds endows diamane with a much higher resistance under compression and shear tests, thus the nanocomposite can reach very high compressive and shear stress. Overall, enhancement on the mechanical interlocking at the interface as triggered by surface functionalization is only effective for the fully embedded nanofiller. This work provides a fundamental understanding of the mechanical properties of PVA nanocomposites reinforced by diamane, which can shed lights on the design and preparation of next generation high-performance nanocomposites.
Polybutadiene Vitrimers with Tunable Epoxy Ratios: Preparation and Properties

Abstract:Traditional crosslinked diene rubber has excellent thermal-mechanical properties and solvent resistance, yet it is incapable of being recycled via universal molding or injecting. Vitrimers, a new class of covalently crosslinked polymer networks, can be topologically rearranged with the associative exchange mechanism, endowing them with thermoplasticity. Introducing the concept of vitrimers into crosslinked networks for the recycling of rubbers is currently an attractive research topic. However, designing tailored rubber vitrimers still remains a challenge. Herein, polybutadiene (PB) vitrimers with different structures were prepared via partial epoxidation of double bonds and ring-opening esterification reactions. Their mechanical and relaxation properties were investigated. It was found that the increasing crosslinking density can increase tensile strength and activation energy for altering the network topology. The influence of side-group effects on their relaxation properties shows that an increase in the number of epoxy groups on the polybutadiene chain can increase the chance of an effective exchange of disulfide units. This work provides a simple network design which can tune vitrimer properties via altering the crosslinking density and side-group effects.
Mechanical Properties of Polymer Nanocomposites with Randomly Dispersed and Cross-Linked Two-Dimensional Diamond

Abstract:Polymer nanocomposites with excellent mechanical performances have been increasingly sought after in engineering applications such as biotechnology, aerospace, and automotive areas. Through molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, this work systematically assessed the tensile performance of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanocomposite reinforced by randomly dispersed two-dimensional diamond-diamane. It is found that randomly dispersed diamane effectively enhances the tensile properties of PMMA with surface functionalization, and the enhancement effect can be remarkably augmented by cross-linking. Simulations reveal that the enhancement effect can be effectively tailored by the alignment of the diamane fillers. The PMMA nanocomposites exhibit much better tensile performance when the diamane fillers are uniformly aligned along the in-plane direction of the filler. Additional investigations show that larger diamane filler is preferred without cross-linking, while smaller diamane filler should be considered when cross-linking is present. Overall, the impacts of different factors on the tensile properties of PMMA nanocomposites are analysed in-depth in this work, which provides atomistic insights for the preparation of polymer nanocomposites with desired mechanical properties.

Abstract:Dynamic covalent polymer networks have long been recognized. With the initial focus on the unintended impact of dynamic covalent linkages on the viscoelasticity of commercial rubbers, efforts in modern times have transitioned into designing dynamic covalent polymer networks with unique adaptive properties. Whereas self‐healing and thermoset reprocessing have been the primary motivations for studying dynamic covalent polymer networks, the recent discovery of the vitrimeric rheological behavior and solid‐state plasticity for this type of material have opened up new opportunities in material innovations. This, coupled with the revelation of the dynamic characteristics of commercially relevant polymer building blocks such as esters and urethanes, suggests a promising future for this class of materials.

Abstract:Nanocomposites based on vinyl-functionalized MCM-48 and polystyrene (PS) or poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) have been prepared and used as additives in PS or PVAc matrices. The mechanical performance of the resulting composites indicates that the properties of the intrapore polymers significantly modify the flexibility or rigidity of the materials. The composites become harder and stronger when filled with the MCM-48-PS nanocomposite, in which the intrapore polymer is rigid. Addition of the MCM-48-PVAc nanocomposite, in which the intrapore polymer is more flexible, enhances the flexibility and toughness of the final composite.
Molecular Dynamics Simulation of the Structural, Mechanical, and Reprocessing Properties of Vitrimers Based on a Dynamic Covalent Polymer Network

Abstract:Recyclability and reprocessability of permanently cross-linked polymeric materials have received considerable scientific and technological attention in view of the environmental pollution and sustainable development. By introducing dynamic covalent bonds, vitrimers are emerging as a promising attempt to address this pressing challenge. However, there is still a lack of thermodynamic and kinetic understanding of the bond exchange reactions (BERs) of vitrimers at the molecular level. Herein, by employing coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations, we successfully construct a model vitrimer system composed of a polymer network formed from linear chains, which can rearrange the network topology via BERs. In this study, we examine the effect of the bond swap energy barrier (ΔEsw) on a variety of mechanical properties. We find that ΔEsw critically controls the dynamics of the linear chains and the reactive beads located on the linear chain. Our results indicate that the best mechanical performance characteristics are achieved at an intermediate value of ΔEsw. Meanwhile, stress relaxations are examined for different ΔEsw systems. By performing a triaxial deformation to induce the cavities, the vitrimer exhibits excellent self-healing capability by decreasing ΔEsw, as well as increasing the self-healing time and temperature. Lastly, extrusion of polymer vitrimer is simulated, and we find that the extrusion rate tends to increase linearly as ΔEsw decreases. Abstract:Progress in the ever‐growing vitrimer chemistry opens up great opportunities for a sustainable society by producing reprocessable thermosets. However, most vitrimers suffer from the conflict between mechanical performance and dynamic reactivity, hindering the development of industrial applications. Herein, a facile but universal material design strategy is proposed to yield tough epoxy vitrimers while preserving excellent reprocessability. Copolymerization and bond exchange reactions can build covalent bridges between heterogeneous polymer networks, thus leading to a hybrid dynamic covalent polymer network containing hard and soft segments. Tailorable mechanical and thermal properties are obtained by controlling the ratio of hard to soft components. The resulting epoxy vitrimer can balance strength and stretchability while exhibiting brittle to ductile transformation in tensile tests. Enhanced fracture toughness is achieved compared to both pristine hard and soft vitrimers. The resulting vitrimers exhibit excellent processability, showing potential applications in composite fabrication, welding and reshaping, and multiple shape memory functions. This work presents a feasible approach to satisfying the demands of mechanical performance and dynamic reactivity in the design of epoxy vitrimers. Abstract:Vitrimers offer a unique combination of mechanical performance, reprocessability, and recyclability that makes them highly promising for a wide range of applications. However, achieving dynamic behavior in vitrimeric materials at their intended usage temperatures, thus combining reprocessability with adaptivity through associative dynamic covalent bonds, represents an attractive but formidable objective. Herein, we couple boron–nitrogen (B−N) dative bonds and B−O covalent bonds to generate a new class of vitrimers, boron–nitrogen vitrimers (BNVs), to endow them with dynamic features at usage temperatures. Compared with boron−ester vitrimers (BEVs) without B−N dative bonds, the BNVs with B−N dative bonds showcase enhanced mechanical performance. The excellent mechanical properties come from the synergistic effect of the dative B−N supramolecular polymer and covalent boron‒ester networks. Moreover, benefiting from the associative exchange of B−O dynamic covalent bonds above their topological freezing temperature (Tv), the resultant BNVs also possess the processability. This study leveraged the structural characteristics of a boron-based vitrimer to achieve material reinforcement and toughness enhancement, simultaneously providing novel design concepts for the construction of new vitrimeric materials.

Abstract:Vitrimers with dynamic covalent bonds combine the merits of thermosets and thermoplastics, opening up new opportunities for science and industry. The attainment of enhanced mechanical performance without compromising dynamic reprocessability poses a significant obstacle to vitrimer materials. Designing vitrimer nanocomposites from interfacial and structural aspects is promising to solve this problem. Herein, strengthening and toughening of hard epoxy vitrimer using nanosilica have been successfully achieved by introducing interfacial covalent binding and microphase separation. Performing interfacial covalent binding between epoxide-modified silica nanoparticles and hard epoxy vitrimer matrix improves interfacial compatibility and nanoparticle dispersion. Controlling the proportion of silica nanoparticles yields two types of microstructures, including a uniformly dispersed material at low nanoparticle loadings and unique microphase separation at high nanoparticle loadings. Particularly, silica reinforcement accompanied with phase separation exhibits a substantial enhancement in Young's modulus, tensile strength, and fracture toughness while achieving good stretchability. In addition, the silica-epoxy vitrimer nanocomposites preserve excellent reprocessability not inferior to the pristine vitrimer. The resulting nanocomposites show potential applications in bonding, recycling, and shape morphing. The concepts and methodologies presented in this work will enlighten future vitrimer material design.

Bond exchange reactions as a paradigm for mitigating residual stress in polymer matrix fiber composites

Abstract:Polymer matrix fiber composites often suffer from residual stresses due to differences in coefficients of thermal expansion between the fibers and resins, as well as contractile strain of the resins during curing. To address residual stress driven composite failure, we propose the use of vitrimers as composite resins, which can undergo thermally activated, stress alleviating, bond exchange reactions (BERs). We conduct fiber Bragg grating measurements for a single glass fiber within bulk vitrimer. These show that the fiber strain in vitrimers with 5% catalyst is significantly lower than in those with 0% catalyst (minimal BER expected) during both curing and post-curing phases. We developed a finite deformation, micromechanically-inspired model that incorporates curing, thermal processes, and BERs, and then implemented this model it into finite element software to simulate stress evolution within single fiber composite systems. The combination of experimental and computational results reveals that BERs can effectively mitigate, but not eliminate, the residual stress in polymer matrix fiber composites.

Abstract:Polymer membranes are commonly pursued for passive separations, which require less energy than distillation. Typically, glassy materials are chosen for gas separations due to extreme sensitivity to size differences in penetrants, whereas rubbers are used for liquid separations due to solubility differences. Vitrimers, dynamic polymer networks with associative bond exchange, are an emerging class of polymers that have gained much attention as self-healing and recyclable materials. Here, in a new direction for vitrimers, we demonstrate the utility of the dynamic bond for eliciting large differences in molecular transport through dense polymer networks. Specifically, permanent and dynamic polymer networks with boronic ester crosslinks are synthesized across a broad range of dynamic bond densities, and the diffusion of a large aromatic dye is measured using fluorescence recovery after photobleaching. When dynamic bond exchange is accelerated by the presence of neighboring nitrogen groups, penetrant transport is enhanced relative to permanent networks by a factor that increases with increasing dynamic bond density and can exceed 1 order of magnitude. Dynamic bonds without the neighboring group effect produce no enhancement of diffusion. These results are interpreted in terms of the ratio of the bond exchange time (inferred from small-molecule experiments) to the hopping time of the penetrant (extracted from the diffusion coefficients). Our results point to a general route for imparting selectivity into polymer membranes through dense crosslinking and dynamic covalent chemistry.

Telecontrol of AutoMerlin Robot by Employing Fuzzy Logic

Abstract:In this work the novel teleoperation of real mobile robot is presented. In order to cope with the issue of random time delay which makes system unstable, Fuzzy logic approach has been used to design a stable controller to teleoperate AutoMerlin mobile robot. The fuzzy controller has been designed in such a way that it takes two inputs to give one output. First input is generated by human operator from control station using master device like joystick. The second input to the controller is generated based on the obstacles in front of mobile robot. The onboard proximity sensors scan the environment and the algorithm deployed on the mobile robot as local intelligence determines the location of nearest obstacle and feeds its value to controller as second input. When controller gets both inputs then it calculates the appropriate speed for mobile robot. The fuzzy rules have been defined in such a way that they protect the robot from colliding with obstacles and random delay does not affect the performance and stability. The presented results exhibit the performance and stability of overall system in the presence of random time delay. 

Abstract:MD/MC simulations elucidate the intricate relationships among structure, dynamics, and properties, enhancing comprehension of how polymer chain behaviors impact relevant properties. They provide insights into tailoring vitrimer properties on a macro scale. Concurrently, DFT calculations delve deeper into chemical nuances, aiding in the design of bond exchange mechanisms and fine‐tuning reaction kinetics. Vitrimers are an innovative class of polymers that boast a remarkable fusion of mechanical and dynamic features, complemented by the added benefit of end‐of‐life recyclability. This extraordinary blend of properties makes them highly attractive for a variety of applications, such as the automotive sector, soft robotics, and the aerospace industry. At their core, vitrimer materials consist of crosslinked covalent networks that have the ability to dynamically reorganize in response to external factors, including temperature changes, pressure variations, or shifts in pH levels. In this review, the aim is to delve into the latest advancements in the theoretical understanding and computational design of vitrimers. The review begins by offering an overview of the fundamental principles that underlie the behavior of these materials, encompassing their structures, dynamic behavior, and reaction mechanisms. Subsequently, recent progress in the computational design of vitrimers is explored, with a focus on the employment of molecular dynamics (MD)/Monte Carlo (MC) simulations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Last, the existing challenges and prospective directions for this field are critically analyzed, emphasizing the necessity for additional theoretical and computational advancements, coupled with experimental validation.

High‐performance epoxy vitrimer composites based on double dynamic covalent bonds

Abstract:Thermoset epoxy resin materials can be endowed with unique dynamic properties by introducing dynamic covalent bonds (DCB) into the cross‐link network of the epoxy resin. However, it remains a challenge to obtain epoxy materials with high mechanical, thermodynamic, and dynamic properties. In this work, a series of epoxy vitrimers with double DCBs were prepared by using a curing agent with imine bonds (PAMD) and an epoxy resin with disulfide bonds (BGPDS). PAMD and BGPDS are cross‐linked and form a uniform aromatic framework that ensures the mechanical and thermal properties of the material. High‐density DCBs ensure the dynamic performance of epoxy vitrimer. In addition, tetra‐needle‐like ZnO whiskers (T‐ZnOw) were added to the epoxy vitrimer for further reinforcement. The results demonstrated that epoxy vitrimer composites with T‐ZnOw content of 10 wt.% exhibit high tensile strength, high Tg, high healing efficiency, shape reconfiguration, reprocessing and rapid degradation. The degradation products can recycle and produce new epoxy vitrimer, leading to a closed‐loop recycling which reduced the environmental pollution and resource waste.

Abstract:Vitrimers, a polymer class that combines the benefits of thermosetting plastics and thermoplastics, have extensive potential applications in our daily lives and industry. Effectively controlling the dynamic properties of vitrimer materials has received considerable attention. This research prepared a series of dynamic epoxy crosslinking network with varying crosslinking densities by introducing reactive monofunctional small-molecule epoxy monomers through a transesterification reaction. Stress relaxation behavior confirmed the impact of small molecular epoxy on the rearrangement of the transesterification topological network. The findings indicated that decreasing the crosslinking density of the resin resulted in shorter stress relaxation time. Adding small molecular epoxy from 0% to 5% increased the tensile strength of the material from 13.2 MPa to 18.1 MPa. The findings demonstrate that it is efficient to adjust the dynamic properties of glass-like polymers by changing the cross-linking density. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of glass-like polymers can be enhanced by appropriately reducing the cross-linking density, which offers a new method for preparing vitrimer materials with desirable properties.

Abstract:Covalent adaptable networks and vitrimers are novel polymers with dynamic reversible bond exchange reactions for crosslinks, enabling them to modulate their properties between those of thermoplastics and thermosets. They have been gathering interest as materials for their recycling and self-healing properties. In this review, we discuss different molecular simulation efforts that have been used over the last decade to investigate and understand the nanoscale and molecular behaviors of covalent adaptable networks and vitrimers. In particular, molecular dynamics, Monte Carlo, and a hybrid of molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo approaches have been used to model the dynamic bond exchange reaction, which is the main mechanism of interest since it controls both the mechanical and rheological behaviors. The molecular simulation techniques presented yield sufficient results to investigate the structure and dynamics as well as the mechanical and rheological responses of such dynamic networks. The benefits of each method have been highlighted. The use of other tools such as theoretical models and machine learning has been included. We noticed, amongst the most prominent results, that stress relaxes as the bond exchange reaction happens, and that at temperatures higher than the glass transition temperature, the self-healing properties are better since more bond BERs are observed. The lifetime of dynamic covalent crosslinks follows, at moderate to high temperatures, an Arrhenius-like temperature dependence. We note the modeling of certain properties like the melt viscosity with glass transition temperature and the topology freezing transition temperature according to a behavior ruled by either the Williams–Landel–Ferry equation or the Arrhenius equation. Discrepancies between the behavior in dissociative and associative covalent adaptable networks are discussed. We conclude by stating which material parameters and atomistic factors, at the nanoscale, have not yet been taken into account and are lacking in the current literature.

Abstract:Vitrimers offer possibilities for sustainable materials due to their reprocessability and recyclability. However, enhancing both their mechanical strength and network dynamics simultaneously remains a challenge. Previous attempts to address this issue have not achieved the desired mechanical strength comparable to traditional cured resins and have also fallen short in dynamic performance during compression molding and extrusion processing. In our study, we have successfully created an epoxy vitrimer, EOCY, by a rational design of the topology of a dual dynamic-covalent-bond (D-DCBs) network based on disulfide and imine bonds. The network of this design incorporates a high density of DCBs through the combined utilization of a rigid monomer containing imine bonds and a flexible crosslinker that carries disulfide bonds. The rigid epoxy monomers in EOCY result in superior tensile strength (85.35 MPa), high T g (112.01 °C), high Young's modulus (2.01 GPa) and improved solvent resistance. Moreover, the flexibility of the curing agent and plentiful D-DCBs lead to reduced activation energy (E a = 42.23 kJ/mol) and short relaxation time (τ = 4.84 s at 140 °C), enabling EOCY to withstand multiple cycles of compression molding and continuous extrusion processing. Our vitrimer also demonstrates recyclability through various chemical methods, leveraging the unique properties of disulfide and imine bonds. In , this study presents a rational approach to network structure design for vitrimers with exceptional mechanical and dynamic properties.

Abstract:Vitrimer, featured with many fascinating properties, is a novel class of polymer, since their network topologies can be rearranged at elevated temperatures without the loss of crosslinking density. Although remarkable advances have been achieved in vitrimers, some of the published vitrimers are liable to creep and their mechanical strength are not always satisfied the specific applications. Herein, toward this issue, dual-crosslinked elastomer vitrimer was prepared by implanting supramolecular hydrogen bonds and exchangeable boronic esters into one single network. In detail, commercialized styrene butadiene rubber was firstly modified by N -Acetylglycine (NAg) to implant building blocks of hydrogen bonds, and subsequently crosslinked by dimercaptoborate (BDB) to introduce exchangeable boronic esters into vitrimer networks. The hydrogen bonds arisen between the grafted NAg moieties can function as physical crosslinks, thereby improve the overall mechanical properties remarkably by reversible breaking and reformation events. Besides, the hydrogen bonds crosslinks impose additional constraints on network strand diffusion, resulting in an improve the creep resistance. Moreover, the malleability and reprocessibility were not deteriorated by hydrogen bonds, as they can dissociate at high temperatures.

Abstract:Imparting multiple, distinct dynamic processes at precise time scales in polymers is a grand challenge in soft materials design with implications for applications including electrolytes, adhesives, tissue engineering, and additive manufacturing. Many competing factors, including the polymer architecture, molecular weight, backbone chemistry, and presence of a solvent, affect the local and global dynamics and in many cases are interrelated. One approach to imparting distinct dynamic processes is through the incorporation of dynamic bonds with widely varying kinetics of bond exchange. Here, statistically cross-linked polymer networks are synthesized with mixed fast and slow dynamic bonds with 3 orders of magnitude different exchange kinetics. Oscillatory shear rheology shows that the single component networks (either fast or slow) exhibit a single relaxation peak while mixing fast and slow cross-linkers in one network produces two peaks in the relaxation spectrum. This is in stark contrast to telechelic networks with the same mixture of dynamic bonds, where only one mixed mode is observed, and here we provide molecular design guidelines for having each dynamic bond contribute a distinct relaxation mode. By comparing the polymer architecture and the difference in the number of dynamic bonds per chain, we have elucidated the role of network architecture in imparting multimodal behavior in dynamic networks. A highly tunable and recyclable material has been developed with control of rubbery plateau modulus (through cross-link density), relaxation peak locations and ratio (through cross-linker selection and molar fractions), and tan δ (through the relationships of the rubbery plateau and relaxation peak locations).
