Abstract:Transportation Research Record, Ahead of Print. This study aims to assess the traffic risk of the lane-changing (LC) process in the urban inter-tunnel weaving (UIW) segment. Time to collision (TTC) and extended time to collision (ETTC) are selected as indices for traffic risk assessment. An instantaneous traffic risk level classification method integrating Pareto's law and the K-means clustering algorithm is proposed. Based on the classification results, the study also proposes an overall LC risk assessment method. Field-collected trajectory data are used to evaluate and characterize the traffic risk associated with the LC process. The instantaneous traffic risk analysis shows that the high-risk state accounts for a high percentage of the LC process in the UIW segment, and the front vehicle on the starting lane has the highest potential for conflict with the target vehicle. The overall risk index analysis shows that the risk distribution of the LC process is significantly clustered in the weaving segment and that the safety level of the UIW segment needs to be improved. This study quantifies the safety level and analyzes the characteristics of traffic risks of the LC process in the UIW segment to provide a decision basis for the development of assisted driving schemes and improvement of traffic safety management in the UIW segment.

Abstract:The freeway on-ramp merging section is often identified as a crash-prone spot due to the high frequency of traffic conflicts. Very few traffic conflict analysis studies comprehensively consider different vehicle types at freeway merging section. Thus, the main objective of this study is to analyse conflicts between different vehicle types at freeway merging section. Field data are collected by Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) at merging areas in Shanghai, China. Vehicle extraction method is utilized to obtain vehicle trajectories. Time-to-collision (TTC) is utilized as the surrogate safety measure. TTC of car-car conflicts are the smallest while TTC of truck-truck conflicts are the largest. Traffic conflicts frequently occur at on-ramp and acceleration lane. Results show the spatial distribution of lane-change conflicts is significantly different between different vehicle types, suggesting that vehicle drivers should maintain safe distance especially car drivers. Besides, in order to decrease lane-change conflict at merging area, traffic management agencies are suggested to change dotted lie to solid lane at the beginning of acceleration lane.
Evaluating the performance of traffic conflict measures in real-time crash risk prediction using pre-crash vehicle trajectories

Abstract:The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of traffic conflict measures for real-time crash risk prediction. Drone recordings were collected from a freeway section in Nanjing, China, over a year. Twenty rear-end crashes and their associated trajectories were obtained. Vehicle trajectories preceding the crash were segmented based on different time periods to represent varying crash conditions. The Extreme Value Theory (EVT) approach combined with a block maxima sampling method was then employed to investigate the generalized extreme value (GEV) distributions of extremely risky events under non-crash and crash conditions. The prediction performance was demonstrated by the differences in GEV distributions under these two conditions. Within the proposed modeling framework, the performances of Time-to-Collision (TTC), Deceleration Rate to Avoid a Crash (DRAC), and Absolute value of Derivative of Instantaneous Acceleration (ADIA) were examined and compared. The results revealed a decreasing trend in the prediction performances as the preceding time window before a crash increased. For any given length of crash conditions, TTC consistently outperformed DRAC and ADIA. Notably, TTC's reliability in crash risk prediction became more uncertain when forecasting crashes more than 2 s in advance. This study provided the optimal thresholds for TTC and ADIA for practical application in crash early warning. The methods and results in this study have the potential to be used for crash risk assessments in autonomous vehicles.
Utilizing UAV Video Data for In-Depth Analysis of Drivers' Crash Risk at Interchange Merging Areas.

Abstract:The interchange merging area suffers a high crash risk in the freeway system, which is greatly related to the intense mandatory merging maneuvers. Ignoring such correlation may result in limited and biased conclusions and inefficient countermeasures. Recently, the availability of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) provides us an opportunity to collect individual vehicle's data to conduct traffic analysis at the microscopic level. Hence, this paper contributes to the literature by proposing a new framework to analyze crash risk at freeway interchange merging areas considering drivers' merging behavior. The analysis framework is conducted based on individual vehicle data from UAV videos. A multilevel random parameters logistic regression model is proposed to investigate each driver's merging behavior in the acceleration lane. The model could identify the impact of different factors related to traffic and drivers on the merging behavior. Then, the crash risk between the merging vehicle and surrounding vehicles is calculated by incorporating the time-to-collision (TTC) and the output of the estimated merging behavior's model. The results suggest that the proposed method provides more valuable insights about the crash risk at interchange merging areas by simultaneously considering the merging behavior and the safety measure. It is concluded that the merging speed, driving ability (e.g., lane change confidence, lane-keeping instability), and the merging location can affect the crash risk. These results can help traffic engineers propose efficient countermeasures to enhance the safety of the interchange merging area. The results also have implications to the design of merging areas and the advent of connected vehicles' technology.
Dynamic Risk Assessment and Control Framework for Work Zone and Its First Implementation under Simulation Environment

Abstract:The number of road maintenance operations in China is increasing. Work zones can interfere with everyday driving and bring significant safety hazards to the throughput vehicles and construction personnel. However, there is currently a lack of effective methods to conduct a dynamic risk assessment of work zones and provide control guidance when necessary. Therefore, this study proposes a dynamic risk assessment and control framework for the work zones. The framework adopts a closed-loop control and dynamic monitoring architecture. A massive amount of microscopic data on vehicles’ behavior is obtained based on advanced data collection technologies (including multicamera multiobject tracking, naturalistic driving, and microscopic traffic simulation). Traffic conflicts between single vehicle and two- or multivehicle are detected using vehicle behavior analyzing technology and the surrogate safety assessment model. A comprehensive assessment index, i.e., UTECN (unit total equivalent conflict number), is established that can consider the severity and possibility of accidents caused by conflicts based on the vehicle collision energy theory, probability theory, and risk management theory. A risk assessment standard is established based on the level of safety service. The framework is first implemented in a simulation environment, and its feasibility and effectiveness are verified by taking a work zone of Shanghai Waihuan Expressway S20 as a case study. The result shows that the framework has good practicality. Under a moderate traffic level, the risk of the work zone can be assessed within 20 minutes. It can be quickly and effectively controlled at an acceptable level after several iterations, which is of great significance for ensuring the safety of life and property of throughput vehicles and construction personnel within the work zone.

Leveraging Connected Vehicle Data for Near-Crash Detection and Analysis in Urban Environments

Abstract:Urban traffic safety is a pressing concern in modern transportation systems, especially in rapidly growing metropolitan areas where increased traffic congestion, complex road networks, and diverse driving behaviors exacerbate the risk of traffic incidents. Traditional traffic crash data analysis offers valuable insights but often overlooks a broader range of road safety risks. Near-crash events, which occur more frequently and signal potential collisions, provide a more comprehensive perspective on traffic safety. However, city-scale analysis of near-crash events remains limited due to the significant challenges in large-scale real-world data collection, processing, and analysis. This study utilizes one month of connected vehicle data, comprising billions of records, to detect and analyze near-crash events across the road network in the City of San Antonio, Texas. We propose an efficient framework integrating spatial-temporal buffering and heading algorithms to accurately identify and map near-crash events. A binary logistic regression model is employed to assess the influence of road geometry, traffic volume, and vehicle types on near-crash risks. Additionally, we examine spatial and temporal patterns, including variations by time of day, day of the week, and road category. The findings of this study show that the vehicles on more than half of road segments will be involved in at least one near-crash event. In addition, more than 50% near-crash events involved vehicles traveling at speeds over 57.98 mph, and many occurred at short distances between vehicles. The analysis also found that wider roadbeds and multiple lanes reduced near-crash risks, while single-unit trucks slightly increased the likelihood of near-crash events. Finally, the spatial-temporal analysis revealed that near-crash risks were most prominent during weekday peak hours, especially in downtown areas.

Abstract:The limited road space and overlapping driving decisions may cause frequent speed and lane changes in the downstream area of expressway toll stations, which easily cause high accident risks. In this paper, micro vehicle trajectory data in the Huai'an South Toll Station was automatically extracted from aerial videos using the novel YSKT algorithm framework to analyze traffic flow characteristics. To further evaluate vehicle collision risks, the Extended Time-To-Collision (ETTC) and Post Encroachment Time (PET) indicators were employed. The results demonstrated that the longitudinal and lateral velocity and acceleration, the distribution of lane-changing points, lane-changing times, and travel time varied with road sections and vehicle types. Notably, the ETC vehicles had a higher risk of traffic accidents compared to MTC vehicles since their greater initial speed. The findings could provide valuable references for traffic managers to comprehensively understand traffic characteristics and evaluate traffic safety of similar complex road nodes.

Abstract:Most traffic surveillance systems are based on videos which captured by fixed cameras on bridges, intersections, etc. However, many traffic collisions may occur in many places without such surveillance systems, e.g., in rural highway. Researchers have developed a set of techniques to improve safety on these places, while it is still not enough to reduce collision risk. Based on a novel concept, this paper proposes a traffic collisions early warning scheme aided by small unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) companion. Basically, it is a vision-based driver assistance system, and the difference in comparison with the available schemes lies in the camera is flying along with the host vehicle. In particular, the system's framework and the vision-based vehicle collision detection algorithm are proposed. The small UAV works in two switchable modes, i.e., high speed flight or low speed motion. The high speed flight corresponds to the host vehicle moving in highway, while the low speed motion includes hover, vertical takeoff and landing. In addition, as the on-line machine learning is applied, the detection procedure can be implemented in real-time, which is critical in practical applications. Extensive experimental results and examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, and its real-time performance outperforms typical tracking methods such as that based on Gaussian mixture model. Moreover, this scheme can be easily extended for some other similar application scenarios.

Abstract:Introduction: Vehicle weight is deterministic to the impact force in collision, and thus the injury risk of vehicle occupants. In China, involvement of heavy vehicles in overall and fatal crashes are prevalent, even though heavy vehicles only constitute a small proportion of overall registered motor vehicles. However, vehicle weight is rarely considered in the existing traffic conflict risk prediction and assessment models because of the unavailability of required data. Method: Novel risk indicators for the diagnosis of traffic conflict risk map, considering the effect of vehicle weight, are proposed, with the advantage of comprehensive traffic flow characteristics and vehicle weight data using Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) technique. Weight-incorporated risk level (WRL) and weight integrated risk level (WIRL) are established to quantify the traffic conflict risk, at an instant and over a specified time period, respectively, by extending the conventional traffic conflict risk measures including time-to-collision (TTC) and modified potential collision energy (PCE). Then, a microscopic traffic simulation model is adopted to estimate the traffic conflict risk map along a highway segment that has partial lane closure. The traffic conflict risk performances, between the risk indicators with and without considering the vehicle weight, are compared. Results: The traffic conflict risks estimated using conventional risk indicators without considering the vehicle weight are generally lower than that based on WRL and WIRL. The difference is more profound when the proportion of heavy vehicles in the traffic stream increases. Conclusions: The finding is indicative to remedial engineering measures including variable message sign, speed limit, and ramp metering that can mitigate the real-time crash risks on highways, especially in adverse environmental and weather conditions, with due consideration of vehicle composition and crash worthiness of vehicles.

Abstract:Objectives: To conduct an in-depth study on the spatial distribution of traffic conflicts in the continuous merging areas of cross-river bridges and ensure public transportation safety. Methods: First, we utilized drone aerial photography to collect videos of vehicle movements. Using the YOLOv7 object detection algorithm and the Strong SORT multi-object tracking algorithm, we extracted high-precision vehicle trajectory time-series data. Next, based on the motion characteristics of traffic entities, we proposed using Deceleration Rate (DR) to describe rear-end conflicts and Lane Change Speed (LCS) to describe lane-changing conflicts. Additionally, we employed the K-means clustering method to determine the threshold values for minor, moderate, and severe levels of rear-end and lane-changing conflicts. Finally, based on the obtained trajectory data, the values of traffic conflicts are calculated and their severity is classified. A heat map of the spatial distribution of vehicle conflicts in continuous merging zones is then created to study the spatial distribution patterns of traffic conflicts. Results: The threshold values for minor, moderate, and severe levels of rear-end conflicts are determined to be 3.06 m/s2, 5.36 m/s2, and 8.04 m/s2, respectively. For lane-changing conflicts, the thresholds are 1.13 m/s, 2.07 m/s, and 3.45 m/s. The spatial distribution of traffic conflicts exhibits a "first increase, then decrease, and then increase again" trend. Conclusions: The study identifies the critical areas of traffic conflicts in the continuous merging zones of cross-river bridges. The research results provide a novel approach for acquiring traffic data in these areas and offer a reliable quantitative method for assessing safety risks on these road segments. This provides a theoretical basis for proposing targeted traffic safety management strategies.

Abstract:Toll plazas with both Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) lane(s) and Manual Toll Collection (MTC) lane(s) could increase crash risks especially at upstream diverging areas because of frequency lane-change behaviors. This study develops the logistic regression (LR) model and five typical non-parametric models including, K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Support Vector Machines (SVM), Decision Trees (DT), and Random Forest (RF) to examine the relationship between influencing factors and vehicle collision risk. Based on the vehicle trajectory data extracted from unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) videos using an automated video analysis system, the unconstrained vehicle motion's collision risk can be evaluated by the extended time to collision (ETTC). Results of model performance comparison indicate that not all non-parametric models have a better prediction performance than the LR model. Specifically, the KNN, SVM, DT and RF models have better model performance than LR model in model training, while the ANN model has the worst model performance. In model prediction, the accuracy of LR model is higher than that of other five non-parametric models under various ETTC thresholds conditions. The LR model implies a pretty good performance and its results also indicate that vehicle yields the higher collision risk when it drives on the left side of toll plaza diverging area and more dangerous situations could be found for an ETC vehicle. Moreover, the vehicle collision risks are positively associated with the speed of the following vehicle and the angle between the leading vehicle speed vector and X axis. Furthermore, the results of DT model show that three factors play important roles in classifying vehicle collision risk and the effects of them on collision risk are consistent with the results of LR model. These findings provide valuable information for accurate assessment of collision risk, which is a key step toward improving safety performance of the toll plaza diverging area.

Abstract:Connected vehicles (CVs) are becoming increasingly prevalent in today's transportation systems, and understanding their behavior in mixed traffic flow is crucial for enhancing traffic efficiency and safety. This paper presents a comprehensive study investigating the impact of CV drivers' compliance and aggressiveness on mixed traffic flow through simulation experiments. The unique contribution of this research lies in the adoption of a clustering method to classify CV drivers' compliance and aggressiveness based on trajectory data captured by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). This approach allows for the accurate calibration of car‐following and lane‐changing models, surpassing previous methodologies. The study outlines two primary methods: the intelligent driver model (IDM) with driver compliance (CVs‐IDM) and the lane‐change 2013 model with drivers' style. These methods are applied to simulate various scenarios of mixed traffic flow, considering different CV penetration rates and driver types. The pivotal findings reveal that higher CV penetration rates lead to reduced traffic flow disturbance, improved safety, and enhanced efficiency. Specifically, CV drivers exhibiting high compliance and normal aggressiveness demonstrate optimal performance in terms of disturbance reduction, safety, and overall efficiency. This research offers valuable insights for policymakers and practitioners. It recommends increasing the CV penetration rate in mixed traffic flow to enhance overall efficiency. Moreover, selecting the appropriate CV driver type based on the penetration rate can further optimize traffic flow, positively impacting transportation systems and promoting safer and more efficient mixed traffic environments.

Rational selection of amorphous or crystalline V2O5 cathode for sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Vanadium oxide (V2O5), as a potential positive electrode for sodium ion batteries (SIBs), has attracted considerable attention from researchers. Herein, amorphous and crystalline V2O5 cathodes on a graphite paper without a binder and conductive additives have been synthesized via facile anodic electrochemical deposition following different heat treatments. Both the amorphous V2O5 (a-V2O5) cathode and crystalline V2O5 (c-V2O5) cathode show good rate cycling performance and long cycling life. After five rate cycles, the reversible capacities of both the cathodes were almost unchanged at different current densities from 40 to 5120 mA g-1. Long cycling tests with 10 000 cycles were carried out and the two cathodes exhibit excellent cycling stability. The c-V2O5 cathode retains a high specific capacity of 54 mA h g-1 after 10 000 cycles at 2560 mA g-1 and can be charged within 80 s. Interestingly, the a-V2O5 cathode possesses higher reversible capacities than the c-V2O5 cathode at low current densities, whereas it is inversed at high current densities. The c-V2O5 cathode shows faster capacity recovery from 5120 to 40 mA g-1 than the a-V2O5 cathode. When discharged at 80 mA g-1 (long discharge time of 140 min) and charged at 640 mA g-1 (short charge time of 17 min), the a-V2O5 cathode shows a higher discharge capacity than its c-V2O5 counterpart. The different electrochemical performance of a-V2O5 and c-V2O5 cathodes during various electrochemical processes can provide a rational selection of amorphous or crystalline V2O5 cathode materials for SIBs in their practical applications to meet the variable requirements.
A Data-Driven Approach For Duration Evaluation Of Accident Impacts On Urban Intersection Traffic Flow

Abstract:Accurate and rapid estimation and prediction of accident impacts are significant, as it assists road administration to alleviate traffic congestion and help the road users to make better travel decisions. In either case, information of how long an accident affects the traffic at nearby intersections is essential. Although there have been various approaches regarding prioraccident issues, only a few studies have been able to evaluate the impacts after an accident. With the emerging of new traffic sensor technologies, traffic data have exploded. This inspires us to rethink the accident impacts evaluation problem based more on intensive data. Accordingly, a practical data-driven method is proposed in this paper, whose functions are twofold: 1) to identify the flow characteristic of each intersection based on the processed data and then quantify the accident impacts through outlier detection and 2) to evaluate the duration of impacts by means of hazard-based model with heterogeneity. The procedure developed in this paper will be useful for capturing the accident impacts duration at or near urban intersections, as well as identifying the causal factors that affect these impacts, which includes the accident features, road environment and the temporal characteristics of nearby intersections. These findings could make some valuable conclusions for a better traffic management.
Toward safer highway work zones: An empirical analysis of crash risks using improved safety potential field and machine learning techniques

Abstract:Due to complex traffic conditions, transition areas in highway work zones are associated with a higher crash risk than other highway areas. Understanding risk-contributing features in transition areas is essential for ensuring traffic safety on highways. However, conventional surrogate safety measures (SSMs) are quite limited in identifying the crash risk in transition areas due to the complex traffic environment. To this end, this study proposes an improved safety potential field, named the Work-Zone Crash Risk Field (WCRF). The WCRF force can be used to measure the crash risk of individual vehicles that enter a work zone considering the influence of multiple features, upon which the overall crash risk of the road segment in a specific time window can be estimated. With the overall crash risk used as a label, the time-window-based traffic data are used to train and validate an eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) classifier, and the Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) method is integrated with the XGBoost classifier to identify the key risk-contributing traffic features. To assess the proposed approach, a case study is conducted using real-time vehicle trajectory data collected in two work zones along a highway in China. The results demonstrate that the WCRF-based SSM outperforms conventional SSMs in identifying crash risks in work zone transition areas on highways. In addition, we perform lane-based analysis regarding the impact of setting up work zones on highway safety and investigate the heterogeneity in risk-contributing features across different work zones. Several interesting findings from the analysis are reported in this paper. Compared to existing SSMs, the WCRF-based SSM offers a more practical and comprehensive way to describe the crash risk in work zones. The approach using the developed WCRF technique offers improved capabilities in identifying key risk-contributing features, which is expected to facilitate the development of safety management strategies for work zones.

Real-time sideswipe conflict risk prediction on the expressway

Abstract:Predicting conflict risk from a microscopic perspective is crucial for understanding traffic dynamics and preventing crashes. However, previous studies often missed this perspective and lacked methods for applying it in spatial contexts. This study introduces a method that predicts conflict risk using both spatial and temporal segments, using real-time data for practical implications. Employing a hybrid model that combines long short-term memory (LSTM) and a convolutional neural network (CNN), the research utilizes three hours of vehicle trajectory data from the Shanghai Inner Ring Expressway. Specifically, a 10 s data window is employed to forecast conflict risk within the subsequent 3 s, 4 s, and 5 s intervals, considering a 10 m spatial section. Modified time to collision ( MTTC L ) is adopted to assess conflicts between vehicles. The study incorporates 12 factors to predict conflict risk, prioritizing them based on SHAP values. The results highlight that most conflicts occur within the 3 s prediction horizon, with prediction accuracy decreasing as the forecast horizon extends. Notably, the study identifies key contributing factors, including the speed difference between vehicles, the number of lane changes, inter-vehicle distance, distance variability, and the number of cars. Spatially, the research identifies entry and exit ramps and their surrounding areas on the expressway as hotspots for sideswipe conflicts.

Abstract:Crash prediction models (CPMs) are mostly developed using statistical or data-driven methods that rely on observed crashes. However, the historical crash records can be unreliable due to availability and data quality issues. Near-crashes based CPMs offer a proactive approach to predict crash frequencies prior to the occurrence of crashes. Surrogate safety measures can be used to identify near-crashes from road user trajectories. Roadside LiDAR offers an innovative approach to collect vehicle trajectory data at a microscopic resolution with high accuracy providing detailed information of all road user movements. This study presents a methodology to identify near-crashes from Roadside LiDAR based vehicle trajectory data using the surrogate indicators: TTC (Time to Collision), PET (Post Encroachment Time), ACT (Anticipated Collision Time) and MaxD (Maximum Deceleration). Additionally, time-based, and evasive-action-based surrogate measures are combined as different pairs to obtain crash probabilities using extreme value theory (EVT). The study results show that the bivariate EVT model displays a better fit to conflict extremes, predicting crash frequencies better than the univariate model. Likewise, while the bivariate model with ACT and MaxD pair performed the best in terms of accuracy, the TTC and MaxD pair was able to reflect the relative threat levels at the study intersections. Overall, the methodology lays ground for using roadside lidar based trajectory data for proactive safety analysis of signalized intersections.

Abstract:This paper proposed a new risk assessment approach based on probability theory and presented corresponding warning strategy for intersection collision avoidance system. Simulation evaluation method was also addressed and evaluation criterions were improved. After an introduction of background and related works of risk assessment for intersection collision avoidance system, a probability model was established to assess crossing path collision risk. Then the warning strategy was made in two traffic scenarios separately. Warning would be issued if risk value beyond risk threshold. A traffic simulation platform was also developed with VISSIM to evaluate collision avoidance performance. The evaluation criterion included not only missed and nuisance warning ratio corresponding to various arrival time difference, but also the required deceleration after warning.
