Abstract:Inflammation-related parameters serve as pivotal indicators in the prognosis and management of lung cancer. This retrospective investigation aimed to explore the relationship between inflammatory markers and diverse clinical variables in non-small-cell lung cancer patients. A cohort of 187 individuals undergoing elective lobectomy for lung cancer was retrospectively analyzed, spanning an 11-year data collection period. Six inflammation ratios derived from complete peripheral blood counts were assessed. Significantly elevated levels of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) (p = 0.005), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) (p = 0.001), Aggregate Index of Systemic Inflammation (AISI) (p = 0.015), Systemic Inflammation Response Index (SIRI) (p = 0.004), and Systemic Immune Inflammation Index (SII) (p = 0.004) were observed in patients with advanced T stages. Significantly, elevated values (p < 0.05) of these parameters were observed in the study's smoker patients compared to non-smokers. A statistically significant correlation was identified between the NLR parameter and tumor size (p = 0.07, r = 0.204), alongside a significant elevation in SIRI (p = 0.041) among patients experiencing postoperative complications. Inflammatory biomarkers emerge as invaluable prognostic indicators for patients with non-small-cell lung cancer, offering potential utility in forecasting their prognosis.

Abstract:Therapeutic approaches focused on the inflammatory microenvironment are currently gaining more support, as biomolecules involved in the inflammatory colorectal cancer (CRC) tumor microenvironment are being explored. We analyzed tumor and paired normal tissue samples from CRC patients (n = 22) whom underwent tumor resection surgery. We assessed 39 inflammation-involved biomolecules (multiplex magnetic bead-based immunoassay), CEA and CA19-9 (ELISA assay) and the tissue expression levels of occludin and also pErk, STAT1 and STAT3 transcriptional factors (western blot). Tumor staging has been established by histopathological evaluation of HE stained tumor tissue sections. We report 32 biomarkers displaying statistically significant differences in tumor vs. control. Additionally, positive statistical biomarker correlations were found between MMP2-IL8 and BAFF-IL8 (Pearson correlation coefficients > 0.751), while APRIL-MMP2, APRIL-BAFF and APRIL-IL8 were negatively correlated (correlation coefficients < - 0.650). While APRIL, BAFF, IL8 and MMP2 did not modulate with tumor stage, they were inversely related to the immune infiltrate level and CD163 tissue expression. We conclude that the significantly decreased APRIL and increased BAFF, IL8 and MMP2 expression were tumor-specific and deserve consideration in the development of new treatments. Also, the positive correlation between Chitinase 3-like 1 and IL8 (0.57) or MMP2 (0.50) suggest a role in tumor growth and metastasis pathways.

Abstract:Purpose: Surgical resection, the primary treatment for colorectal cancer (CRC), is often linked with postoperative complications that adversely affect the overall survival rates (OS). The pan-immune-inflammation value (PIV), a novel biomarker, is promising in evaluating cancer prognoses. We aimed to explore the impact of preoperative immune inflammation status on postoperative and long-term oncological outcomes in patients with CRC.Methods: A retrospective analysis of 203 patients with CRC who underwent surgery (January 2016-June 2020) was conducted. The preoperative PIV was calculated as [(neutrophil count + platelet count + monocyte count) / lymphocyte counts]. The PIV optimal cutoff value was determined based on the OS using the Contal and O'Quigley methods.Results: A PIV value ≥155.90 was defined as high. Patients were categorized into low-PIV (n = 85) and high-PIV (n = 118) groups. Perioperative clinical outcomes (total operation time, time to gas out, sips of water, soft diet, and hospital stay) were not significantly different between the groups. The high-PIV group exhibited more postoperative complications (P = 0.024), and larger tumor size compared with the low-PIV group. Multivariate analysis identified that American Society of Anesthesiologists grade III (P = 0.046) and high-PIV (P = 0.049) were significantly associated with postoperative complications. The low-PIV group demonstrated higher OS (P = 0.001) and disease-free survival rates (DFS) (P = 0.021) compared with the high-PIV group. Advanced N stage (P = 0.005) and high-PIV levels (P = 0.047) were the identified independent prognostic factors for OS, whereas advanced N stage (P = 0.045) was an independent prognostic factor for DFS.Conclusion: Elevated preoperative PIV was associated with an increased incidence of postoperative complications and served as an independent prognostic factor for OS.

Abstract:Ovarian cancer remains one of the most lethal gynaecological malignancies affecting women worldwide; therefore, attention has been focused on identifying new prognostic factors which might help the clinician to select cases who could benefit most from surgery versus cases in which neoadjuvant systemic therapy followed by interval debulking surgery should be performed. The aim of the current paper is to identify whether preoperative inflammation could serve as a prognostic factor for advanced-stage ovarian cancer. Material and methods: The data of 57 patients who underwent to surgery for advanced-stage ovarian cancer between 2014 and 2020 at the Cantacuzino Clinical Hospital were retrospectively reviewed. The receiver operating characteristic curve was used to determine the optimal cut-off value of different inflammatory markers for the overall survival analysis. The analysed parameters were the preoperative level of CA125, monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and systemic inflammation index (SII). Results: Baseline CA125 > 780 μ/mL, NLR ≥ 2.7, MLR > 0.25, PLR > 200 and a systemic immune inflammation index (SII, defined as platelet × neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio) ≥84,1000 were associated with significantly worse disease-free and overall survival in a univariate analysis. In a multivariate analysis, MLR and SII were significantly associated with higher values of overall survival (p < 0.0001 and p = 0.0124); meanwhile, preoperative values of CA125, PLR and MLR were not associated with the overall survival values (p = 0.5612, p = 0.6137 and p = 0.1982, respectively). In conclusion, patients presenting higher levels of MLR and SII preoperatively are expected to have a poorer outcome even if complete debulking surgery is performed and should be instead considered candidates for neoadjuvant systemic therapy followed by interval surgery.

Abstract:AIM: Cancer-related systemic inflammation causes the increase of proinflammatory markers and acute phase proteins. Activation of systemic inflammatory response has been linked to poorer prognosis in colorectal cancer. This study aims to evaluate the prognostic value of preoperative systemic inflammatory markers and inflammation/nutrition scoring systems in predicting the postoperative early period (first 30 days) complications and mortality outcomes of patients who underwent curative surgery for colorectal cancer in our clinic. METHODS: This study was designed as a retrospective single-arm cross-sectional study. In this study, 300 patients older than 18 years of age who underwent open and laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer were included. Demographic characteristics of the patients, preoperative hemogram and biochemical values, operation characteristics, postoperative tumor pathologies and disease stages were recorded. RESULTS: Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy, Systemic Inflammation Score, Modified Glasgow Prognostic Score, Naples Prognostic Score and Prognostic Nutritional Index had a significant effect on the first 30-day mortality (p-values: <0.001, 0.007, <0.001, <0.001, <0.001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that certain preoperative inflammation and nutrition scores might serve as indicators for potential early postoperative adverse outcomes in colorectal cancer surgery.

Abstract:Inflammatory acute phase proteins have been reported to play a crucial role in cancer progression. Various hematologic and inflammatory markers and scores, such as the lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, systemic inflammation score (SIS), prognostic nutritional index (PNI), Glasgow prognostic score, and, more recently, the Naples prognostic score, have been reported as significant prognostic markers. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the prognostic significance of the C reactive protein-to-albumin ratio (CAR) in patients with colon cancer. Materials and Methods: We conducted a prospective observational study on a series of patients who underwent curative surgery for colon cancer. The C reactive protein-to-albumin ratio was determined preoperatively, and we evaluated the correlations between the CAR and various clinical and pathological parameters, as well as the correlation with Overall and Relapse-free survival. Furthermore, we compared the accuracy of the CAR with that of the Naples score. Results: One hundred and ten patients were included in the study. We set 0.4927 as the cut-off value for the CAR according to a receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. Based on the cut-off value, patients were divided into a low CAR group and a high CAR group. The preoperative CAR exhibited statistically significant correlation with tumor volume, T and N stage, number of positive lymph nodes, and grade of tumor differentiation. We also demonstrated a positive correlation between high CAR values and a higher Naples score (p = 0.0005), even when a subgroup analysis was performed for each group individually. Conclusions: The preoperative CAR is a useful prognostic marker in patients with colon cancer. These results may help to design strategies to personalize targeted management approaches among colon cancer patients.
[Dynamics of the internal carotid artery postoperative occlusion development].

Abstract:The incidence of postoperative occlusion of carotid artery is low (0.5%-0.6%) and is rarely symptomatic. The aim of this study was to analyze the dynamics of the internal carotid artery (ICA) postoperative occlusion development. During one-year period, 8 000 patients were examined at Cerebrovascular Laboratory, University Department of Neurology. Among them, 33 patients (25 male and 8 female) with postoperative ICA occlusion were detected by color Doppler. We retrospectively analyzed the dynamics of ICA occlusion development from the first postoperative follow-up. The risk factors for atherosclerosis were analyzed. In 31 of 33 patients, postoperative ICA occlusion was recorded on the first follow-up examination, 3 months of carotid endarterectomy (18 right and 15 left). In 8 patients, combined occlusion of the common and ICA was detected (4 right and 4 left). One patient developed occlusion during the first year of follow-up, and in one patient it was detected 3 years after the surgery. Eight patients had also had surgery on the contralateral ICA and showed satisfactory findings. In 19 patients, mild atherosclerotic changes were found contralaterally, 5 had moderate stenosis, and 1 patient had subtotal ICA stenosis. The early onset of postoperative ICA occlusion most likely is not caused by atherosclerosis risk factors but by perioperative complications.
Preoperative C-reactive protein and other inflammatory markers as predictors of postoperative complications in patients with colorectal neoplasia

Abstract:Background: Inflammatory markers are measured following colorectal surgery to detect postoperative complications. However, the association of these markers preoperatively with subsequent postoperative course has not yet been usefully studied. Aim: The aim of this study is to assess the ability of preoperative C-reactive protein (CRP) and other inflammatory marker measurements in the prediction of postoperative morbidity after elective colorectal surgery. Methods: This is a retrospective study which catalogs 218 patients undergoing elective, potentially curative surgery for colorectal neoplasia. Preoperative laboratory results of the full blood count (FBC), C-reactive protein (CRP) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) were recorded. Multivariable analysis was performed to examine preoperative variables against 30-day postoperative complications by type and grade (Clavien-Dindo (CD)), adjusting for age, sex, BMI, smoking status, medical history, open versus laparoscopic operation, and tumor characteristics. Results: Elevated preoperative CRP (≥ 5 mg/L) was significantly predictive of all-cause mortality, with an OR of 17.0 (p < 0.001) and was the strongest factor to predict a CD morbidity grade ≥ 3 (OR 41.9, p < 0.001). Other factors predictive of CD morbidity grade ≥ 3 included smoking, elevated preoperative platelet count and elevated preoperative neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (OR 15.6, 8.6, and 6.3 respectively, all p < 0.05). CRP values above 5.5 mg/L were indicative of all-cause morbidity (AUC = 0.871), and values above 17.5 mg/L predicted severe complications (AUC = 0.934). Conclusions: Elevated preoperative CRP predicts increased postoperative morbidity in this patient cohort. The results herein aid risk and resource stratification and encourage preoperative assessment of inflammatory propensity besides simple sepsis exclusion.

Abstract:IgG4-related sclerosing cholangitis (IgG4-SC) and primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) can both cause liver dysfunction. While IgG4-SC is associated with IgG4-related diseases such as autoimmune pancreatitis, PBC is associated with various autoimmune diseases. However, there is only one case report of an association between IgG4-SC and PBC, and this association has not been elucidated further. The treatments for these two diseases are different, i.e., corticosteroid treatment is performed for IgG4-SC and ursodeoxycholic acid is given for PBC. We report a case of IgG4-SC overlapping with PBC in a 45-year-old man who was successfully treated by combination therapy with prednisolone and ursodeoxycholic acid.
Significance of Inflammation-Based Indices in the Prognosis of Patients with Non-Metastatic Colorectal Cancer.

Abstract:Previous studies demonstrated that several inflammation-based hematological indices are closely related to various malignancies, including colorectal cancer (CRC). In this study, the prognostic value of inflammation-based markers, including a combination index termed coNLR-PDW, comprising the preoperative neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the platelet distribution width (PDW), was evaluated in 206 patients with non-metastatic CRC treated with surgery at a single medical center. The association of patient demographics, blood chemistry, and serum biochemical indices with recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) were examined through univariate and multivariate analysis. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis revealed the optimal cut-off values of the NLR and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) to be, respectively, 2.0 and 3.32 for both RFS and OS. For PDW, cut-off values of 17.25% and 17.35% were defined for RFS and OS, respectively. On univariate analysis, lymph node involvement, stage, presence of intravascular emboli (IVE), carbohydrate antigen 199 (CA199) ≥ 35 kU/L, NLR ≥ 2.0, LMR ≤ 3.32, elevated PDW, a high coNLR-PDW score, high blood glucose, and high neutrophil and lymphocyte percentages correlated with poorer RFS and OS (P < 0.05). On multivariate analysis, lymph node involvement, IVE, CA199, PDW, and coNLR-PDW correlated with both RFS and OS (P < 0.05), while NLR correlated only with OS (P = 0.001). These results highlight the usefulness of the coNLR-PDW index as a prognostic marker of non-metastatic CRC outcome. In clinical practice, its assessment could contribute to establishing more personalized regimes for patients undergoing tumor resection surgery.

Abstract:Surgical resection is the key treatment for colorectal cancer, but the extent of surgical trauma has been implied as a key factor for the oncologic outcome. The immune stress response to surgical trauma generates a cascade of immunological events implying neutrophils' perioperative change generating NETosis, N killer decrease, and platelets' activation that may influence postoperative surgical outcome, tumor cell growth, and future oncogenesis. The present study aimed to investigate the correlation between intraoperative oxygen consumption (VO2) and the dynamic variation of neutrophils, lymphocytes, and platelets in the perioperative period to identify an intraoperative tool that could predict the postoperative immune response. Twenty-six colorectal oncological surgical patients were enrolled in an observational, prospective, monocentric study, over 18 months. Serum neutrophils, lymphocytes, and thrombocytes values were collected in the preoperative period and on the third postoperative day, oxygen consumption was measured and recorded every 15 min during surgery using indirect calorimetry. We compared oxygen consumption measurements registered 30 min after induction of anesthesia (VO2a) and the first value registered after abdominal wall closure (VO2b) to perioperative variation of absolute neutrophils (VNC), lymphocytes (VLC), and platelets (VPC) count. Our results proved a significant correlation between VO2 variation and neutrophils' perioperative dynamic assessed by VNC (correlation coefficient = 0.547, p < 0.01, 95% confidence interval (CI) =0.175, 0.783). We also noticed a correlation between VPC and VO2 (correlation coefficient = −0.603, p < 0.01, 95% CI = −0.815, −0.248). No correlation could be shown between VO2 and VLC variation (p = 0.39). In conclusion, intraoperative VO2 variation measured by indirect calorimetry correlates well with perioperative neutrophils and platelets count dynamic variations and can be used as an early prognosis marker of postoperative immune response and surgical outcome in colorectal oncological surgery.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Perioperative inflammatory markers, including the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), are associated with oncological prognosis. However, their changes in colorectal cancer surgery for predicting the prognosis are rarely investigated.AIM: To compare perioperative changes to evaluate the prognostic significance of patients' survival.MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective clinical data and baseline laboratory parameters of 183 colorectal cancer (CRC) patients who underwent curative surgery were collected between January 2007 and January 2013. The clinicopathological characteristics were compared. Statistical analysis was used to identify the predictive changes of perioperative NLR and PLR associated with survival prognosis.RESULTS: ROC analysis indicated that perioperative NLR/PLR showed higher predictive accuracy for prognosis, and the optimal cut-off values of pre-NLR, post-NLR, pre-PLR, and post-PLR were 2.94, 4.32, 184.29, and 212.37, respectively. Kaplan-Meier analysis suggested that the four groups stratified by perioperative changes had significantly different recurrence-free survival and overall survival (<i>p</i> < 0.05). Univariate and multivariable analysis revealed that patients with higher cancer stage, lymph node metastasis, and perioperative change of NLR/PLR (HH, LH) had significant association with poor prognosis of RFS and OS (all <i>p</i> < 0.05).CONCLUSIONS: Perioperative NLR and PLR might be good predictors for prognosis in CRC patients who have undergone curative surgery, which could guide the customised therapeutic strategy. Furthermore, their assessment could contribute to accurately predicting oncologic outcomes and provide an in-depth understanding of the patients, which could guide the operational strategy.

Abstract:Background There are few clinical symptoms in early colorectal cancer, so it is necessary to find a simple and economical tumor detection index for auxiliary diagnosis. This study aims to explore the diagnostic value of preoperative inflammation-related indicators, such as neutrophil, lymphocyte, platelet count, platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLA), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), for early colorectal cancer, and determine whether inflammation-related indicators can provide more accurate diagnostic judgment for patients. Methods This study was a retrospective study. Patients who were first diagnosed with colorectal cancer or colorectal adenomatous polyp at Beijing Friendship Hospital from October 2016 to October 2017 were retrospectively collected. According to inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 342 patients were included, including 216 patients with colorectal cancer and 126 patients with colorectal adenomatous polyp. Fasting venous blood and other clinical features were collected to compare the differences between colorectal cancer and colorectal adenoma. Results There were statistically significant differences in age, carcinoembryonic antigen, albumin, hemoglobin, mean platelet volume, lymphocyte, monocyte, NLR, PLA, SII, and mean platelet volume to platelet count ratio between colorectal cancer group and colorectal adenoma group ( P < .05), and a Nomogram model was established. Using inflammatory markers to differentiate colorectal and colorectal polyps produced greater AUC than using tumor markers alone (.846 vs .695). Conclusion Inflammation-related indicators, such as lymphocyte, monocyte, and mean platelet volume, may serve as potential indicators to assist in the diagnosis of early colorectal cancer.

Abstract:AIM: To investigate association of circulating inflammatory factors at the time of colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery with survival.METHODS: Plasma levels from 174 CRC patients (69 females and 105 men), with median age 70 years (range 29-90), localized in the colon (n = 105) or rectum (n = 69), with stage I (n = 24), stage II (n = 54), stage III (n = 67) and stage IV (n = 29) were measured using commercially available Bio-Plex Pro™ Human Chemokine Panel 40-Plex, including 40 different chemokines, cytokines and interleukins. The prognostic association of each inflammatory factor was analysed as CRC-specific and total mortality.RESULTS: Out of 174 patients, 66 died during the follow-up, 40 because of CRC specific mortality. High tertile levels of 8 factors were significantly associated with increased CRC-specific mortality, of which CCL1, CCL20, CCL24, CX3CL1, IL-4 and TNF-α remained significant in a multivariate Cox regression analysis. High tertile levels of 14 factors were associated with increased total mortality, of which CCL1, CCL15, CCL20, CX3CL1, CXCL13, IFN-γ, IL-2, IL-4 and IL-10 remained significant after adjustment for clinical covariates. For most of the inflammatory factors the association between higher tertile levels and an increased mortality in general appeared two years after surgery. High tertile levels of TNF-α and CCL24 were exclusively associated with CRC-specific mortality. The distribution of these factors were not associated with TNM stage with exception for CCL20.CONCLUSION: High plasma levels of inflammatory factors are associated with increased risk of mortality among CRC patients and could be potential biomarkers for revealing prognosis.

Abstract:Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains one of the most important global health problems, being in the top 3 neoplasms in terms of the number of cases worldwide. Although CRC develops predominantly from the adenoma-adenocarcinoma sequence through APC gene mutations, in recent years, studies have demonstrated the role of chronic inflammation in this neoplasia pathogenesis. Cytokines are important components of chronic inflammation, being some of the host regulators in response to inflammation. The pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α are involved in tumor cell proliferation, angiogenesis, and metastasis and seem to strengthen each other's mode of action, these being stimulated by the same mediators. In our study, we collected data on 68 patients with CRC and 20 healthy patients from the Gastroenterology Department of Craiova County Emergency Clinical Hospital, who were assessed between January 2022 and February 2023. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between increased plasma levels of the cytokines and the extent of the tumor, lymph nodes, and metastasis-(TNM stage), as well as the patients' prognoses. We also compared the plasma levels of cytokines and acute inflammatory markers, namely, the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), c-reactive protein (CRP), and fibrinogen, along with the tumor markers, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and carbohydrate antigen 19.9 (CA 19.9), in CRC patients. We showed that all the pro-inflammatory cytokines studied had higher levels in patients with CRC in comparison with the control group. We also showed that the acute inflammatory markers of erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, and fibrinogen, and the tumor markers of CEA and CA 19.9 can be useful in diagnosis and prognosis in patients with CRC. Considering the association between pro-inflammatory cytokines and CRC, the development of new targeted therapies against IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α can improve patient care and the CRC survival rate.
Prognostic role of preoperative inflammatory markers in postoperative patients with colorectal cancer

Abstract:Background: Inflammatory response markers are prognostic factors for several cancers, but their role in postoperative colorectal cancer (CRC) is unclear. The purpose was to evaluate the role of preoperative Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte ratio (NLR), Platelet-to-Lymphocyte-ratio (PLR), and Lymphocyte-to-Monocyte ratio (LMR) in the prognosis of postoperative CRC patients. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 448 CRC patients who had undergone surgical resection from December 2015 to December 2017 in our hospital. The plasma NLR, PLR, LMR, CEA, and CA19-9 were collected within 2 weeks before the operation. We recorded the clinical characteristics and survival data by reviewing medical records and phone calls. We analyzed preoperative inflammatory markers and clinical features using Pearson chi-squared tests or Fisher's tests. Uni- and multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed, and overall survival (OS) was estimated with the Kaplan–Meier method. Results: High NLR and PLR were associated with worse overall survival in postoperative CRC (HR = 2.140, 95%CI = (1.488-3.078), P < 0.001; HR =1.820, 95%CI = (1.271-2.605), P = 0.001). High LMR was associated with improved overall survival in postoperative CRC (HR = 0.341, 95%CI = (0.188-0.618), P < 0.001). In the multivariate regression analysis, the increase of NLR resulted in an increase in the risk of death (HR = 1.678, 95%CI = (1.114-2.527), P = 0.013), and for the LMR, a reduction of the risk of death (HR = 0.480, 95%CI = (0.256 - 0.902), P = 0.023). Moreover, TNM stage, CA-199, CEA, nerve or vascular invasion (NVI) and adjuvant chemotherapy after surgery also were associated with worse overall survival in postoperative CRC. Conclusion: Current evidence indicates that preoperative inflammatory markers NLR, LMR, and PLR are associated with overall survival in postoperative patients with colorectal cancer. NLR is an independent risk factor, and LMR is an independent protective factor in CRC patients after surgery.

Abstract:Purpose: This study aims to investigate the predictive significance of inflammatory markers for postoperative lung metastasis in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. The focus is on exploring the relationship between traditional inflammatory markers, such as NLR, PLR, and newly introduced indices like CALLY, and their association with CRC progression and lung metastasis. Methods: A retrospective review of medical records from 303 CRC patients at the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University (January 2014 to December 2023) was conducted. Various inflammatory markers, baseline characteristics, and survival data were analyzed. The CALLY index, integrating PNI and CRP levels, was introduced. Statistical analyses, including univariate and multivariate Cox regression and logistic regression, were performed to determine associations between inflammatory factors and CRC outcomes. Results: Among the patients, 55 developed lung metastasis during the study period. The results revealed that lower PNI, LMR, and CALLY were significantly associated with reduced postoperative progression-free survival (PFS). Moreover, CEA, PNI, and CALLY emerged as independent risk factors for postoperative lung metastasis. Conclusion: In conclusion, this study underscores the importance of inflammatory markers in predicting postoperative outcomes for CRC patients. Lower PNI, LMR, and CALLY were identified as significant predictors of reduced PFS, while CEA, PNI, and CALLY were independently associated with an increased risk of postoperative lung metastasis. These findings highlight the potential clinical utility of these inflammatory markers in monitoring CRC recurrence and metastasis.
The Influence of Inflammatory and Nutritional Status on the Long-Term Outcomes in Advanced Stage Ovarian Cancer

Abstract:Background: Despite improving surgical techniques and achieving more often complete debulking procedures, certain patients with advanced-stage ovarian cancer still have a very poor prognosis. The aim of the current paper is to investigate whether inflammatory and nutritional status can predict the long-term outcomes of ovarian cancer patients. Methods: A retrospective analysis of 57 cases diagnosed with advanced-stage ovarian cancer submitted to surgery as first intent therapy was carried out. In all cases, the preoperative status was determined by calculating the CRP/albumin ratio, as well as the Glasgow score, the modified Glasgow score and the prognostic nutritional index. Results: Patients presenting higher values of the CRP/albumin ratio, with a higher Glasgow score, modified Glasgow score and prognostic nutritional index (PNI), were more frequently associated with incomplete debulking surgery, a higher peritoneal carcinomatosis index and poorer overall survival (20 months versus 9 months for the CRP/albumin ratio p = 0.011, 42 versus 27 versus 12 months for the Glasgow score p = 0.042, 50 versus 19 versus 12 months for the modified Glasgow score, p = 0.001, and 54 months versus 21 months, p = 0.011 for the prognostic nutritional index). Conclusions: A strong relationship between the nutritional and inflammatory status in advanced-stage ovarian cancer seems to exist.
