Abstract:Pneumatic artificial muscle (PAM) was adopted to drive a robotic leg for better understanding the humanlike walking mechanism which utilized compliant actuators. The associated walking model was established and tested. The designed biped robot with PAMs used linear spring to control the joints antagonistically. A closed-loop proportional-integral-derivative controller was developed for fitting each degrees of freedom of the robot to human gait parameters with a pulse width modulation algorithm. For optimization, an energy-efficient control to human-like walk and stand in a stable manner was proposed.

Abstract:This paper presents a bio-inspired concept for an autonomous centimeter-scale robot for locomotion on un-even terrains. First, we discuss why legged locomotion can be more effective because of its high efficiency, low energy consumption and environmentally friendly operation. The choice of the optimal gait for the mini-robot is discussed according to its size. A small legged robot with some jumping mechanism can be efficient on compliant terrains, and this additional jumping function allows the robot to overcome obstacles several times higher than itself in a rough terrain. After that, a jumping robot named Grillo, our first prototype, is introduced. We also describe the electronic part of this robot, mainly focusing on control techniques exploited in the airborne phase.

Abstract:Robots need lightweight legs for agile locomotion, and intrinsic series elastic compliance has proven to be a major ingredient for energy-efficient locomotion and robust locomotion control. Animals' anatomy and locomotion capabilities emphasize the importance of that lightweight legs and integrated, compact, series elastically actuated for distal leg joints. But unlike robots, animals achieve series elastic actuation by their muscle-tendon units. So far no designs are available that feature all characteristics of a perfect distal legged locomotion actuator; a low-weight and low-inertia design, with high mechanical efficiency, no stick and sliding friction, low mechanical complexity, high-power output while being easy to mount. Ideally, such an actuator can be controlled directly and without mechanical cross-coupling, for example remotely. With this goal in mind, we propose a low-friction, lightweight Series ELastic Diaphragm distal Actuator (SELDA) which meets many, although not all, of the above requirements. We develop, implement, and characterize a bioinspired robot leg that features a SELDA-actuated foot segment. We compare two leg configurations controlled by a central pattern generator that both feature agile forward hopping. By tuning SELDA's activation timing, we effectively adjust the robot's hopping height by 11% and its forward velocity by 14%, even with comparatively low power injection to the distal joint.
An Open Torque-Controlled Modular Robot Architecture for Legged Locomotion Research

Abstract:We present a new open-source torque-controlled legged robot system, with a low-cost and low-complexity actuator module at its core. It consists of a high-torque brushless DC motor and a low-gear-ratio transmission suitable for impedance and force control. We also present a novel foot contact sensor suitable for legged locomotion with hard impacts. A 2.2 kg quadruped robot with a large range of motion is assembled from eight identical actuator modules and four lower legs with foot contact sensors. Leveraging standard plastic 3D printing and off-the-shelf parts results in a lightweight and inexpensive robot, allowing for rapid distribution and duplication within the research community. We systematically characterize the achieved impedance at the foot in both static and dynamic scenarios, and measure a maximum dimensionless leg stiffness of 10.8 without active damping, which is comparable to the leg stiffness of a running human. Finally, to demonstrate the capabilities of the quadruped, we present a novel controller which combines feedforward contact forces computed from a kino-dynamic optimizer with impedance control of the center of mass and base orientation. The controller can regulate complex motions while being robust to environmental uncertainty.

Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Co-Optimization of Morphology and Gait for Small-Scale Legged Robot

Abstract:Small-scale legged robots have found widespread utilization in various industrial and biomedical applications due to their compact size and superior locomotion capabilities. Reducing the number of actuators is often desirable to decrease the robot's size and weight, which comes at the expense of the robot's workspace. Our study proposes a method to enhance the mobility of small-scale legged robots with limited degrees of actuators (DoAs) by co-optimizing both morphology parameters and control policy. The co-optimization is formulated as a bi-level optimization problem, where the control policy is designed using deep reinforcement learning algorithms and central pattern generators (CPGs) at the lower level. The inclusion of CPGs significantly speeds up training and enables the application of simulation results in real-world scenarios. At the upper level, morphology optimization is achieved through Bayesian optimization based on dual-networks. This approach eliminates the need to train a policy for each morphology candidate from scratch, leveraging previous experience to enhance efficiency. Through simulation and physical experiments, the effectiveness of our proposed approach is demonstrated, showcasing its ability to discover optimal morphology and gait for small-scale legged robots with limited DoAs. These findings have potential long-term impacts on small-scale legged robot design and locomotion control.

Abstract:Galloping cheetahs, climbing mountain goats, and load hauling horses all show desirable locomotion capability, which motivates the development of quadruped robots. Among various quadruped robots, hydraulically driven quadruped robots show great potential in unstructured environments due to their discrete landing positions and large payloads. As the most critical movement unit of a quadruped robot, the limb leg unit (LLU) directly affects movement speed and reliability, and requires a compact and lightweight design. Inspired by the dexterous skeleton-muscle systems of cheetahs and humans, this paper proposes a highly integrated bionic actuator system for a better dynamic performance of an LLU. We propose that a cylinder barrel with multiple element interfaces and internal smooth channels is realized using metal additive manufacturing, and hybrid lattice structures are introduced into the lightweight design of the piston rod. In addition, additive manufacturing and topology optimization are incorporated to reduce the redundant material of the structural parts of the LLU. The mechanical properties of the actuator system are verified by numerical simulation and experiments, and the power density of the actuators is far greater than that of cheetah muscle. The mass of the optimized LLU is reduced by 24.5%, and the optimized LLU shows better response time performance when given a step signal, and presents a good trajectory tracking ability with the increase in motion frequency.

Abstract:Robotic locomotion in unstructured terrain demands an agile, adaptive, and energy-efficient architecture. To traverse such terrains, legged robots use rigid electromagnetic motors and sensorized drivetrains to adapt to the environment actively. These systems struggle to compete with animals that excel through their agile and effortless motion in natural environments. We propose a bio-inspired musculoskeletal leg architecture driven by antagonistic pairs of electrohydraulic artificial muscles. Our leg is mounted on a boom arm and can adaptively hop on varying terrain in an energy-efficient yet agile manner. It can also detect obstacles through capacitive self-sensing. The leg performs powerful and agile gait motions beyond 5 Hz and high jumps up to 40 % of the leg height. Our leg's tunable stiffness and inherent adaptability allow it to hop over grass, sand, gravel, pebbles, and large rocks using only open-loop force control. The electrohydraulic leg features a low cost of transport (0.73), and while squatting, it consumes only a fraction of the energy (1.2 %) compared to its conventional electromagnetic counterpart. Its agile, adaptive, and energy-efficient properties would open a roadmap toward a new class of musculoskeletal robots for versatile locomotion and operation in unstructured natural environments.
Design and Characterization of 3D Printed, Open-Source Actuators for Legged Locomotion

Abstract:Impressive animal locomotion capabilities are mediated by the co-evolution of the skeletal morphology and muscular properties. Legged robot performance would also likely benefit from the co-optimization of actuators and leg morphology. However, development of custom actuators for legged robots is often expensive and time consuming, which discourages roboticists from pursuing performance gains afforded by application-specific actuator optimization. This paper presents open-source designs for two quasi-direct-drive actuators with performance regimes appropriate for an 8--15 kg robot, built completely with off the shelf and 3D-printed components for less than $200 USD each. The mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties of each actuator are characterized and compared to benchmark data. Actuators subjected to 420k strides of gait data experienced only a 2% reduction in efficiency and 26 mrad in backlash growth, demonstrating viability for rigorous and sustained research applications. We present a thermal solution that nearly doubles the thermally-driven torque limits of our plastic actuator design. The performance results are comparable to traditional metallic actuators for use in high-speed legged robots of the same scale. These 3D printed designs demonstrate an approach for designing and characterizing low-cost, highly customizable, and highly reproducible actuators, democratizing the field of actuator design and enabling co-design and optimization of actuators and robot legs.

Abstract:The choice of actuation when designing a bipedal robot is an important matter, as it impacts its capacities and its control. In these aspects, electric direct-drive (DD) linear motors are interesting candidates. Indeed, they can reproduce the human muscle system by using monoarticular and bi-articular motors and offer a natural backdrivability for impact mitigation. However, motor efficiency depends on their elongation and their attachment points. The ROBIBIO (RObot humanoïde BI-articulaire BIO-inspiré) project aims to design and build a planar bipedal robot using electric direct-drive linear motors for the actuation. To do so, a simulator was developed to evaluate multiple human-like bipedal robot architectures over a set of motion-captured movements. Furthermore, a numerical optimization was done to find the best motor placement for each architecture.

Abstract:Compliant leg function found during bouncy gaits in humans and animals can be considered a role model for designing and controlling bioinspired robots and assistive devices. The human musculoskeletal design and control differ from distal to proximal joints in the leg. The specific mechanical properties of different leg parts could simplify motor control, e.g., by taking advantage of passive body dynamics. This control embodiment is complemented by neural reflex circuitries shaping human motor control. This study investigates the contribution of specific passive and active properties at different leg joint levels in human hopping at different hopping frequencies. We analyze the kinematics and kinetics of human leg joints to design and control a bioinspired hopping robot. In addition, this robot is used as a test rig to validate the identified concepts from human hopping. We found that the more distal the joint, the higher the possibility of benefit from passive compliant leg structures. A passive elastic element nicely describes the ankle joint function. In contrast, a more significant contribution to energy management using an active element (e.g., by feedback control) is predicted for the knee and hip joints. The ankle and knee joints are the key contributors to adjusting hopping frequency. Humans can speed up hopping by increasing ankle stiffness and tuning corresponding knee control parameters. We found that the force-modulated compliance (FMC) as an abstract reflex-based control beside a fixed spring can predict human knee torque-angle patterns at different frequencies. These developed bioinspired models for ankle and knee joints were applied to design and control the EPA-hopper-II robot. The experimental results support our biomechanical findings while indicating potential robot improvements. Based on the proposed model and the robot's experimental results, passive compliant elements (e.g. tendons) have a larger capacity to contribute to the distal joint function compared to proximal joints. With the use of more compliant elements in the distal joint, a larger contribution to managing energy changes is observed in the upper joints.

Abstract:The usage of parallel elastic actuators (PEA) in legged robots could potentially enhance the joints and increase energy efficiency by providing extra torques. However, the current design that adopts tension springs or spiral springs usually requires additional working space for PEA add-ons and enlarges size and mass too much. Besides, they often tune the spring parameters especially the spring constant by hand, failing to achieve optimal performance when considering multiple objectives. To tackle these issues, this article designs a compact dual-slide PEA (DS-PEA) leg that adopts a compression spring structure. Through integrating with a dual-slide mechanism, the PEA elements are attached tightly to the transmission, resulting in a small-size and light-weighted design. Furthermore, we adopt a multiobjective optimization method, i.e., multi-Pareto fronts quantify, to automatically choose the proper spring constant. Simulation and hardware experiments demonstrate that peak torque, motor power, and cost of transport for motion tracking are all largely reduced, even when working at multiple trajectories. Extensive hopping experiments further validate the dynamic motion capability and the energy efficiency of the delicate design. The compact DS-PEA leg will be used in a quadruped robot shortly.

Effective Locomotion at Multiple Stride Frequencies Using Proprioceptive Feedback on a Legged Microrobot

Abstract:Limitations in actuation, sensing, and computation have forced small legged robots to rely on carefully tuned, mechanically mediated leg trajectories for effective locomotion. Recent advances in manufacturing, however, have enabled the development of small legged robots capable of operation at multiple stride frequencies using multi-degree-of-freedom leg trajectories. Proprioceptive sensing and control is key to extending the capabilities of these robots to a broad range of operating conditions. In this work, we use concomitant sensing for piezoelectric actuation with a computationally efficient framework for estimation and control of leg trajectories on a quadrupedal microrobot. We demonstrate accurate position estimation (< 16% root-mean-square error) and control (16% root-mean-square tracking error) during locomotion across a wide range of stride frequencies (10-50 Hz). This capability enables the exploration of two bioinspired parametric leg trajectories designed to reduce leg slip and increase locomotion performance (e.g., speed, cost-of-transport, etc.). Using this approach, we demonstrate high performance locomotion at stride frequencies of (10-30 Hz) where the robot's natural dynamics result in poor open-loop locomotion. Furthermore, we validate the biological hypotheses that inspired the our trajectories and identify regions of highly dynamic locomotion, low cost-of-transport (3.33), and minimal leg slippage (< 10%).

Design and Fabrication of Soft Locomotion Robots based on Spatial Compliant Mechanisms

Abstract:Soft robotics has emerged as a promising technology that holds great potential for various application areas. This is due to soft materials unique properties, including flexibility, safety, and shock absorption, among others. Despite many advancement in the field, the development of effective design methodologies and production techniques for soft robots remains a challenge. Although numerous robot prototypes have been proposed in recent years, their designs are often complex and difficult to produce. As such, there is a need for more efficient and unified design approaches that can facilitate the production of soft robots with desirable properties. In this paper, we propose a method for designing soft robots using elastic beams and spatial compliant mechanisms. The method is based on an evolutionary approach that enables the creation of designs with both high motion and force transmission ratios. Specifically, we focus on the development of locomotion mechanisms using a central linear actuator. Our approach involves the use of commonly available plastic materials and a 3D printer to manufacture the designs. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach by presenting experimental results that show successful production and real world operation. Overall, our findings suggest that the use of elastic beams and an evolutionary approach can facilitate the creation of soft robots with desirable locomotion properties, including fast locomotion up to 3.7 body lengths per second, locomotion with a payload, and underwater locomotion. This method has the potential to enable the development of more efficient and practical soft robots for various applications.

Abstract:Abstract Crawling robots have elicited much attention in recent years due to their stable and efficient locomotion. In this work, several crawling robots are developed using two types of soft pneumatic actuators (SPAs), namely, an axial elongation SPA and a dual bending SPA. By constraining the deformation of the elastomeric chamber, the SPAs realize their prescribed motions, and the deformations subjected to pressures are characterized with numerical models. Experiments are performed for verification, and the results show good agreement. The SPAs are fabricated by casting and developed into crawling robots with 3D-printing connectors. Control schemes are presented, and crawling tests are performed. The speeds predicted by the numerical models agree well with the speeds in the experiments.

Abstract:Abstract Soft actuators with high safety, adaptivity, and energy-to-weight ratio have the potential to be used in developing more adaptive legged robots. In this work, we incorporate soft actuators into rigid parallel mechanisms and develop multi-degree-of-freedom (multi-DOF) soft-rigid hybrid joints that can actively achieve 1, 2, and 3 DOFs actuated by 2, 4, and 8 bellows-type fluidic elastomer actuators (FEAs), respectively. The FEAs exhibit large axial strain ( ε e max = 176%, ε c max = 25%), small radial expansion ( ε r max = 12%) at 70 kPa, and are light weight, and the rigid parallel mechanisms constrain motions of the joints to the desired DOFs. We characterize the proposed joints’ kinematic and static performances by measuring their range of motion and blocked torque upon actuation. Results show that these joints successfully achieve all desired DOFs and are of high torque to weight ratio (4.07 N·m·kg −1 ). A bucking prediction model is established to evaluate the critical buckling pressure. As a demonstration for legged robots, we use the proposed joints and develop two types of multi-DOF legs based on inspirations from the DOF configuration of legged mammals’ musculoskeletal systems. Preliminary results demonstrate that FEAs-based multi-DOF legs can perform fundamental biomimetic movements (e.g. leg swing) through pressure adjustment, and high-speed tasks (e.g. ball kicking and jumping) through high-pressure and short-pulse actuation.

Design of Soft, Modular Appendages for a Bio-inspired Multi-Legged Terrestrial Robot

Abstract:Soft robots have the ability to adapt to their environment, which makes them suitable for use in disaster areas and agricultural fields, where their mobility is constrained by complex terrain. One of the main challenges in developing soft terrestrial robots is that the robot must be soft enough to adapt to its environment, but also rigid enough to exert the required force on the ground to locomote. In this paper, we report a pneumatically driven, soft modular appendage made of silicone for a terrestrial robot capable of generating specific mechanical movement to locomote and transport loads in the desired direction. This two-segmented soft appendage uses actuation in between the joint and the lower segment of the appendage to ensure adequate rigidity to exert the required force to locomote. A prototype of a soft-rigid-bodied tethered physical robot was developed and two sets of experiments were carried out in both air and underwater environments to assess its performance. The experimental results address the effectiveness of the soft appendage to generate adequate force to navigate through various environments and our design method offers a simple, low-cost, and efficient way to develop terradynamically capable soft appendages that can be used in a variety of locomotion applications.

Abstract:Almost all forms of soft crawling robots and animals rely on frictional anisotropy to achieve terrestrial locomotion. However, the electroadhesion force of actuators is limited to the materials, roughness of various terrain, and patterning high- and low- friction materials on the ventral side of the robot can only enable the robot to crawl along a single direction. This paper presents a novel pneumatic foot that can regulate the friction between itself and the crawling surface to achieve frictional anisotropy in two opposite directions. The design scheme, working mechanism and analytical model based on the energy method of the pneumatic foot are described. The accuracy of the analytical model is verified by numerical simulation and an experimental study. A soft crawling robot, including its locomotion mode and control system, is designed. Crawling experiments on various terrain and payload experiments are conducted to prove the feasibility of the pneumatic foot. The pneumatic foot can enable the robot to crawl on various terrain at a maximum speed of 0.128 BL/s. When the payloads are 4.29 times of the robot's weight, the crawling speed is still relatively high (0.108 BL/s). This pneumatic foot can be applied to biomimetic inchworm or earthworm robots on various terrain and in some limited space, such as the air ducts of central air-conditioning.

Abstract:Collaborative robots, or cobots, have become popular due to their ability to safely operate alongside humans in shared environments. These robots use compliant actuators as a key design element to prevent damage during unintended collisions. In prosthetic and orthotic applications, compliant actuators are crucial for ensuring user safety and comfort. However, most compliant cobots for these applications are excessively expensive and complex to construct. Our study introduces an innovative, cost-effective, and sensorised elastic actuator design tailored for prosthetics and orthotics. The design uses a modular approach and leverages 3D printing technology for rapid customisation, enabling efficient and affordable fabrication. Both hardware and software components are open-source, facilitating unrestricted access for students, researchers, and practitioners. Our design supports impedance and admittance control techniques, enhancing the system's capabilities. Validation results show a standard deviation of 9.67 Nm between calculated and measured torque in impedance control and 0.2563 radians between calculated and measured angles in admittance control. This allows for improved adaptability to varying operational requirements in prosthetics and orthotics. By introducing this educational framework encompassing a low-cost, sensorised elastic actuator design, we aim to address the need for accessible solutions in the field of collaborative robotics for prosthetics and orthotics.
Bipedal locomotion using variable stiffness actuation

Abstract:Robust and energy-efficient bipedal locomotion in robotics is still a challenging topic. In order to address issues in this field, we can take inspiration from nature, by studying human locomotion. The Spring-Loaded Inverted Pendulum (SLIP) model has shown to be a good model for this purpose. However, the human musculoskeletal system enables us to actively modulate leg stiffness, for example when walking in rough terrain with irregular and unexpected height variations of the walking surface. This ability of varying leg stiffness is not considered in conventional SLIP-based models, and therefore this paper explores the potential role of active leg stiffness variation in bipedal locomotion. It is shown that the conceptual SLIP model can be iteratively extended to more closely resemble a realistic (i.e., non-ideal) walker, and that feedback control strategies can be designed that reproduce the SLIP behavior in these extended models. We show that these extended models realize a cost of transport comparable to human walking, which indicates that active leg stiffness variation plays an important role in human locomotion that was previously not captured by the SLIP model. The results of this study show that active leg stiffness adaptation is a promising approach for realizing more energy-efficient and robust bipedal walking robots.

Wearable Robot Design Optimization Using Closed-Form Human–Robot Dynamic Interaction Model

Abstract:Wearable robots are emerging as a viable and effective solution for assisting and enabling people who suffer from balance and mobility disorders. Virtual prototyping is a powerful tool to design robots, preventing the costly iterative physical prototyping and testing. Design of wearable robots through modelling, however, often involves computationally expensive and error-prone multi-body simulations wrapped in an optimization framework to simulate human–robot–environment interactions. This paper proposes a framework to make the human–robot link segment system statically determinate, allowing for the closed-form inverse dynamics formulation of the link–segment model to be solved directly in order to simulate human–robot dynamic interactions. The paper also uses a technique developed by the authors to estimate the walking ground reactions from reference kinematic data, avoiding the need to measure them. The proposed framework is (a) computationally efficient and (b) transparent and easy to interpret, and (c) eliminates the need for optimization, detailed musculoskeletal modelling and measuring ground reaction forces for normal walking simulations. It is used to optimise the position of hip and ankle joints and the actuator torque–velocity requirements for a seven segments of a lower-limb wearable robot that is attached to the user at the shoes and pelvis. Gait measurements were carried out on six healthy subjects, and the data were used for design optimization and validation. The new technique promises to offer a significant advance in the way in which wearable robots can be designed.
