Abstract:The unprecedented popularity of online communication has raised interests and concerns among the public as well as in scholarly circles. Online communications have pushed people farther away from one another. This study is a further examination of the effects of online communications on well-being, in particular: Locus of control, Loneliness, Subjective well-being, and Preference for online social interaction. Chinese undergraduate students ( N = 260; 84 men, 176 women; M age = 20.1 yr., SD = 1.2) were questioned about demographic information and use of social media as well as four previously validated questionnaires related to well-being. Most participants used QQ, a popular social networking program, as the major channel for online social interactions. Locus of control was positively related to Loneliness and Preference for online social interaction, but negatively related to Subjective well-being; Loneliness (positively) and Subjective well-being (negatively) were related to Preference for online social interaction; and Loneliness and Subjective well-being had a full mediating effect between the relationships of Locus of control and Preference for online social interaction. The findings of the study showed that more lonely, unhappy, and externally controlled students were more likely to be engaged in online social interaction. Improving students' locus of control, loneliness, and happiness may help reduce problematic Internet use.

Abstract:Objective The attributes affecting happiness include endogenous material factors such as income and social comparison, and exogenous cultural factors like individual values and national ideology. And the latter is greatly affected by media in China. This study seeks to explore the influence path of media construction on happiness under cultural perspective in China. Methods Using Chinese General Social Survey 2015 data, we apply the ordered logit model to calculate the influence of the usage of television and Internet on happiness conspicuously. Results The use of television and Internet both have positive influence on happiness, and the influence path is that state media shapes collectivism and Internet shapes individualism. As the state-controlled media in China, television continuously promotes nationalism and patriotism, thus strengthens audience's collectivistic value. Meanwhile, Internet which enjoys certain speech freedom in China boosts the user's individualistic value which makes a difference in promoting happiness. Conclusion The U-shaped effect of "collectivism-individualism" on happiness found in this paper empirically illustrates that collectivistic and individualistic values can both facilitate happiness, and also further shows that television and Internet can enhance happiness by influencing cultural values.

Abstract:Background: To address the growing concerns about mental health issues among Chinese university students, our study investigates the impact of social media on their mental health. This study intends to shed light on how these students' use of social media platforms contributes to these mental health issues, given that it has been estimated that up to 30% of university students in China suffer from mental health issues. Methods: We investigate the extent of this issue by looking at how Chinese social media platforms like WeChat, Weibo, and QQ impact students' mental health. To gain a comprehensive insight into students' perspectives, this study's sole methodology is qualitative semi-structured interviews. Our core claim asserts that social media considerably affects Chinese university students' mental health, with both positive and negative consequences. Results: The findings show how closely social media use and Chinese university students' mental health are related. These networks let people connect and get support but also encourage social comparison and stigma towards mental illness. Students use a variety of coping skills, such as self-regulation techniques, digital detoxification techniques, and looking for emotional support in online networks. These results highlight the need for a complex understanding of social media's effects on mental health. Our study also recognizes students' capacity for adaptation and resilience as they traverse the digital world, offering theoretical and practical applications for successfully juggling online and offline lives. Conclusion: In the end, our study contributes to a thorough and culturally sensitive understanding of how social media affects the mental health of Chinese university students.

Abstract:With the high degree of openness of the Internet, the number of young people exposed to social networking sites is increasing. Previous research has shown that there are many ways to influence people's perceptions of intimate relationships, and social media has played a role in recent years. Yet, the exact aspects influencing people's perceptions of relationships still need to be discovered. The current study focused on how social media affected Chinese college students' perceptions of romantic relationships through questionnaires and offered suggestions for improving young people's well-being in relationships. The findings highlighted that social media is associated with relationship dissatisfaction. It influenced college students' perceptions of these aspects of relationships: love permanence and commitment, confidence to enter a relationship, gender dyad, and financial and emotional independence. Such results suggested that social media may have a detrimental effect on young people's impressions of relationships but not on their desire to establish close connections. Besides, this study revealed that these effects are correlated with the individual's media usage, personality, and self-esteem. This study has implications for changing young people's views on relationships and enhancing their sense of well-being in a relationship.

Abstract:This research examines the impact of social media use on the psychological, subjective, and social well-being of college students, with a focus on the mediating role of self-esteem. Social media has become an integral part of college students' lives, offering platforms for information sharing, communication, and social interaction. However, the effects of social media on students' well-being remain controversial. Some studies suggest that social media enhances social support, relationships, and belongingness, leading to improved mental health and subjective well-being. Conversely, other research highlights negative emotions, social anxiety, and feelings of loneliness resulting from social media use. Moreover, excessive attention to others' social performances on social media may negatively impact college students' self-esteem. This study aims to explore the relationship between social media use and the three dimensions of well-being while investigating the mediating role of self-esteem. By understanding the mechanisms underlying social media's influence on students' well-being, this research can provide insights for promoting healthier social media use among college students and improving their mental health and happiness.

Abstract:Social networks have become integral to daily life, with billions of users worldwide. While social media offers networking and information-gathering benefits, its impact on psychological well-being raises various concerns. This study investigates the correlation between social media engagement and adverse health outcomes among young adults. Specifically, it examines the effects on depression, anxiety, and sleep irregularities. The research utilizes a quantitative design. The sample comes from a university in Hebei Province, China. Through calculation, 400 representatives are needed to represent the sample size. The study will also explore potential moderating factors such as age, gender, racial status, and socioeconomic status. Data will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics to identify patterns and correlations. Anticipated results include identifying social media usage patterns linked to adverse health outcomes and how demographic factors influence these effects. The findings aim to address research gaps and inform policies to mitigate social media's adverse impact on mental health.

Abstract:The use of social media is incomparably on the rise among students, influenced by the globalized forms of communication and the post-pandemic rush to use multiple social media platforms for education in different fields of study. Though social media has created tremendous chances for sharing ideas and emotions, the kind of social support it provides might fail to meet students’ emotional needs, or the alleged positive effects might be short-lasting. In recent years, several studies have been conducted to explore the potential effects of social media on students’ affective traits, such as stress, anxiety, depression, and so on. The present paper reviews the findings of the exemplary published works of research to shed light on the positive and negative potential effects of the massive use of social media on students’ emotional well-being. This review can be insightful for teachers who tend to take the potential psychological effects of social media for granted. They may want to know more about the actual effects of the over-reliance on and the excessive (and actually obsessive) use of social media on students’ developing certain images of self and certain emotions which are not necessarily positive. There will be implications for pre- and in-service teacher training and professional development programs and all those involved in student affairs.

Abstract:With the rapid development of science and technology and the popularity of the Internet, social media has become an indispensable part of people’s daily l ives. Whether sharing life with friends or getting news information, social media has deeply penetrated into our social life, constantly affecting our cognition of society and self. Based on cluster analysis, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs the ory and agenda-setting theory, this paper adopts a questionnaire survey method to sample users of nine platforms, including WeChat, Today’ Headlines, Weibo, QQ, TikTok, bilibili, Zhihu, Baidu Post Bar and Tianya Community. A total of 350 valid samples were collected, and the influence mechanism of social cognition and happiness was analyzed, revealing the potential effects of the content and form of social media on users’ cognition and emotions. Finally, the author puts forward some suggestions from different angles and puts forward the shortcomings of this study to provide a reference for later researchers.

Abstract:In the realm of online learning, social media is emerging as an indispensable tool for student learning. While social media offers benefits for students, it is important to acknowledge that it can also exert adverse effects on them. Drawing inspiration from stress dynamics, coping models, and existing social media literature, our study delves into the ways in which technical stressors (specifically, techno-invasion and techno-overload) and social stressors (encompassing the sense of belonging, social interaction, and social support) give rise to psychological stress among students who excessively depend on social media for learning. This heightened stress subsequently leads to feelings of exhaustion and perceived irreplaceability, ultimately impacting their behavioral outcomes, notably academic performance. The model was tested using survey data collected from a sample of 249 university students in China. From the perspective of technical and social systems, this study presents that excessive usage of social media has the potential to impact the students' academic performance by contributing to their exhaustion and perceived irreplaceability.

Students can use different forms of social media to connect, share, and view a myriad of content. When influenced by posts, social media can have a significant impact on their lives. Social media can be a form of social support, but it can also have a negative effect on mental health. With the increase in use, social media can provoke individuals to begin self-comparing or gain an unrealistic expectation of themselves and other individuals. This can lead to lower self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-worth. This exploratory study attempts to determine the relationship between social media use and its impact on depression, anxiety, and stress amongst students in higher education.

Abstract:Background: Previous research notes that the usage of WeChat is significantly related to individuals' mental health, but the underlying mechanism is still not completely discovered. The present study aimed to explore the sequential mediating roles of WeChat use motivations and bonding social capital on the effects of WeChat use intensity on mental health in Chinese college students. Method: The present study adopted an online survey with a total of 487 Chinese college students. Correlation analysis and serial mediation analysis were measured by process regarding the hypothesis. Results: The study presented findings indicating that WeChat use intensity had both direct and indirect impacts on the levels of life satisfaction and loneliness experienced by college students in China. Specifically, the utilization of WeChat for social motivation and entertainment motivation was found to have a suppressive effect on the relationship between the intensity of WeChat usage and individuals' life satisfaction. The association between the intensity of WeChat usage and mental health outcomes (life satisfaction and loneliness) was found to be mediated by bonding social capital. Furthermore, the association between the intensity of WeChat usage and mental health was found to be mediated by the sequential mediation effects of using WeChat for social motivation and bonding social capital, as well as the sequential mediation effects of using WeChat for entertainment motivation and bonding social capital. Conclusion: Our findings provide implications for policymakers and social workers regarding renovating the perceptions of the relationships between WeChat use intensity and overall mental health. Specifically, practical online activities and services of SNSs are recommended to be designed for meeting social and recreational gratifications and boosting bonding social capital, which in turn promotes psychological wellbeing.

Abstract:This study explores the impact of social media usage on the mental health of college students, focusing on usage patterns and psychological effects. A descriptive research design was employed, with a sample size of 121 respondents selected through stratified random sampling. Data was gathered using a closed-ended questionnaire featuring a 5-point Likert scale. The findings reveal that social media consumption varies significantly among students, with a majority experiencing mood changes and potential addiction. Furthermore, the analysis highlights the influence of social media on daily activities, sleep patterns, and overall mental well-being. The study provides valuable insights into the relationship between social media usage and mental health, offering a foundation for future research on mitigating negative psychological impacts among students.

Abstract:Whilst there is concern about the role of social media use in adolescent and emerging adult development, there is a gathering consensus that how individuals spend their time on social media may be more important than how much time they spend on it, with potential benefits and risks of engagement. In addition, there is growing interest in a broader range of outcomes, including wellbeing, mental health and educational attainment. Building on this research, the present study offers a new, theory-driven investigation of complex cross-sectional associations between users' motivations for social media use and wellbeing, as well as users' motivations and academic outcomes. Specifically, self-perceived stress and Grade Point Average scores were regressed on self-reported social media motivations, using data collected from nearly 6000 Chinese undergraduate students. In line with our predictions and a transdiagnostic cognitive behavioral conceptualization of social media use, social enhancement/approach motivations ("to make new friends") and escapist motivations ("to kill time") were associated with lower and higher levels of self-reported stress, respectively. In addition, academic motivations for social media use (i.e., "for academic purposes") were associated with higher educational attainment. These effects persisted after controlling for a number of potential confounders, including key demographic and socioeconomic variables. Whilst the cross-sectional design precludes inferences about underlying directions of causality, these findings suggest that inter-individual differences in motivations for engagement may be crucial in understanding the role that social media plays in adolescent and emerging adult life and generate predictions for future longitudinal and cross-sectional studies.

Abstract:Despite the widespread use of modern social media, relatively less is known about the impact of social media on the acculturation processes of international students in China and their engagement in school activities. Accordingly, this research intends to assess the influence of social media usage while answering questions such as how using social media can improve international students’ acculturation process from both psychological/mental and behavioural standpoints, as well as whether international students’ acculturation promotes students’ engagement in school activities, among other questions. The role of self-identification in mediating the connection between social media usage and international students’ acculturation is also investigated. Primary data were gathered from 354 international students studying at various universities around China. The results show that international students use of social media improves their acculturation process and engagement in school activities through information sharing, establishing contacts, and entertainment. The study’s limitations and future directions are also highlighted.

Abstract:Features and relevant services of online social media have been attracting users during the COVID-19 pandemic. Previous studies have shown that college students tend to use social media more frequently than other groups. However, in being affected by social media overload, the social media use behaviors of many college students have been out of their control in terms of their capabilities or cognition. Based on the stressor-strain-outcome (SSO) model and the theory of compensatory internet use (TCIU), we developed a research model to study the causes of social media overload and its impact on college students' academic performance during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 441 valid responses from college students through questionnaires in China are collected via purposive sampling and used in the data analysis. This study conducts PLS-SEM to analyze collected data, finding that boredom proneness is associated with overload (stress), which has a bearing on social media overload (strain) and the reduction in final performance (outcome). Through illustrating the psychological and behavioral conditions that hinder the academic performance of students, this study provides deeper insights into students' uncontrollable use of social media. Moreover, with respect to the identified antecedents, this study aims to find solutions to mitigate the impact of social media overload resulting from boredom proneness on the academic performance of college students.

Abstract:University students have intensively used social media in their daily life. The students use social media for social, education, and interaction purposes. Some studies found that students also use social media for psychological relief benefits such as building happiness through making friends and finding entertainment. However, limited studies have been conducted to find out variables that affect psychological needs in social media use. This study, therefore, aims to find out variables that affect university students' psychological needs in social media use. This study used a quantitative method with a survey approach. Samples were eighty students who were purposively recruited from four faculties. This study shows that information search, social interaction, entertainment, narcissism, and attention seekers behavior have significantly influenced the students' motivation to fulfill psychological needs in social media use. Personal identity-building did not affect the students’ use of social media in fulfilling their psychological needs. The students might be focused on social identity rather than personal identity building. We concluded that social media had become a new source for university students to find psychological relief and well-being.

Abstract:In view of the growing importance of social networking sites (SNS) to adolescents and the mixed and inconclusive empirical evidence on the relationships between SNS use and their well-being, the present study aimed to investigate the associations of social function use intensity (SFUI) and entertainment function use intensity (EFUI) with adolescent life satisfaction and self-esteem, and examine the mediating roles that general prosocial behavior and school volunteering may play in the links. Drawing from the findings of a self-administered online survey with a valid sample of 3452 adolescents (mean age = 18.21) from 10 vocational colleges across four regions of China, our results demonstrated that there was an indirect positive effect of SFUI on adolescent life satisfaction and self-esteem via two interpersonal pathways of general prosocial behavior and school volunteering. We also discovered that there was an indirect negative effect of EFUI on adolescent life satisfaction and self-esteem via an intrapersonal pathway of school volunteering. Our findings provided empirical support for the differential effects of SFUI and EFUI on adolescent life satisfaction and self-esteem through the interpersonal and intrapersonal pathways, and unpacked the mediating roles of general prosocial behavior and school volunteering in these mechanisms.
