Abstract:Perovskite crystallization and morphology are two essential factors to the photoelectric performances of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). A 3D metal-organic assembly [In-2(phen)(3)Cl-6]CH(3)CN2H(2)O (In2) is introduced for the first time into lead iodide precursor to modify the quality of a perovskite thin film through a two-step sequential deposition method. As a result, both the lead iodide and perovskite exhibit improved crystallization and modified morphology. The optimized film presents less trap states and is thus in favor of the charge transfer as well as charge collection. Consequently, open circuit voltage (V-oc) and fill factor obviously show enhancements from 0.99 to 1.04V and from 0.66 to 0.71, respectively, yielding a significant increase in a power conversion efficiency from 15.41% to 17.15%. Meanwhile, the hydrophobic property of In2 can increase the moisture resistance of the perovskite, which offers a simple and effective method to improve the stability of PSCs.

Abstract:Formamidinium (FA)-based perovskites with an ideal tolerance factor still face structure stability challenges because of corner-sharing and face-sharing octahedra competition. This seriously limits the long-term operational stability of FA-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, we demonstrate a subsurface lattice reconstruction strategy by simultaneously tuning the position of Pb2+ and I- planes. The reconstructed lattice configuration favors corner-sharing octahedra and makes the crystal lattice more stable, ultimately stabilizing FA-based perovskites. Additionally, the subsurface modification reduces defects and simultaneously tunes the valence band alignment, thereby increasing the charge carrier lifetime and improving carrier-selective transfer. Consequently, the resultant PSCs achieve a stabilized power conversion efficiency of similar to 25%. Moreover, these PSCs exhibit excellent stability, retaining 96% initial efficiency after 6,000 h of storage in a dry box with similar to 20% relative humidity at 25 degrees C and 95% of their initial efficiency after over 3,000 hmaximum power point test under simulated AM1.5 illumination.

Abstract:Recently, organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite materials have drawn great attention for their outstanding performance in high-efficiency solar cells. Successful synthesis has been realized either in solution-based chemical deposition or vapor deposition. However, conflicts have never ceased among quality control, growth rate, process complexity, and instrument requirement, which have limited their development toward real applications. In this work, the first electrochemical fabrication of perovskite toward high-efficiency and scalable perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is established. The morphology and crystallization of the CH3NH3PbI3 film can be effectively controlled by simply modulating a few physical parameters. A detailed study on its optoelectronic properties reveals significantly improved film quality and interfacial conditions. Aided by this, the total process does not require standard annealing, which greatly reduces the total growth time from hours to minutes. Up to now, an efficiency of 15.65% has been achieved in planar PSCs under 1 sun AM 1.5 condition, with small hysteresis and efficiency loss under longtime exposure to air. Moreover, high efficiency (10.45%) can be easily attained for large cells (2 cm(2)). This result will hopefully facilitate research for applicable high-efficiency PSCs and other multicomponent materials as well.
Realizing Stable Perovskite Solar Cells with Efficiency Exceeding 25.6% Through Crystallization Kinetics and Spatial Orientation Regulation

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites have emerged as highly promising candidates for photovoltaic applications, owing to the exceptional optoelectronic properties and low cost. Nonetheless, the performance and stability of solar cells suffer from the defect states of perovskite films aroused by non-optically active phases and non-centralized crystal orientation. Herein, a versatile organic molecule, Hydantoin, to modulate the crystallization of perovskite, is developed. Benefiting from the diverse functional groups, more spatially oriented perovskite films with high crystallinity are formed. This enhancement is accompanied by a conspicuous reduction in defect density, yielding efficiency of 25.66% (certified 25.15%), with superb environmental stability. Notably, under the standard measurement conditions (ISOS-L-1I), the maximum power point (MPP) output maintains 96.8% of the initial efficiency for 1600 h and exhibits excellent ion migration suppression. The synergistic regulation of crystallization and spatial orientation offers novel avenues for propelling perovskite solar cell (PSC) development. By incorporating Hydantoin into the precursor, the crystallization kinetics of perovskite is effectively regulated, resulting in the formation of perovskite films with a highly-oriented out-of-plane orientation. This enhancement is accompanied by a significant reduction in defect density, leading to perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with a remarkable efficiency of 25.66% (certified 25.15%) and outstanding stability. image

Abstract:Enhancing stability while maintaining high efficiency is among the primary challenges in the commercialization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, a crystal growth technique assisted by in‐situ generated 2D perovskite phases has been developed to construct high quality 2D/3D perovskite films. The in‐situ generated 2D perovskite serve as templates for regulating the nucleation and oriented crystal growth in the α‐FAPbI3‐rich film. This led to a high film quality with much reduced trap density and an ultralong carrier lifetime. The obtained perovskite film shows excellent stability under extreme environment conditions (T = 200 °C, RH = 75 ± 5%). The corresponding PSC achieved an efficiency of 26.16% (certified 25.84%), along with excellent operational stability (T93 > 1300 hours, T = ∼50 °C) as well as outstanding high and low temperature cycle stability. Abstract:Though great progress has been realized in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), there are still some thorny challenges that exist such as 1) low power conversion efficiency (PCE) and loss of stability due to the defects in the film; 2) poor reproducibility of solution-processed PSCs due to the unstable perovskite precursor solution. Here, an effective multifunctional additive, benzoyl hydrazine (BH), was developed to modify the perovskite film. The result shows that the defect of the film decreased after BH modification due to the interaction between BH and perovskite. Meanwhile, the I ions (I−) migration is also suppressed due to the weak interaction between BH and perovskite. In addition, the –NH–NH2 in BH can reduce the undesired I2 by reducing it to I−. Finally, the PCE of PSCs modified by BH achieved a PCE of 22.75%, which is one of the highest PCE of the reported MA-free PSCs. The modified device still exhibited excellent stability in different conditions.

Abstract:A novel organic multifunctional additive, 2‐(furan‐3‐yl)ethanamine hydrochloride (FFEACl), is introduced in this study, which plays a pivotal role in promoting the oriented crystallization of the α‐phase FAPbI3 and reducing defect density in the resulting perovskite film. Consequently, the top‐performing PSC exhibits an impressive power conversion efficiency of 25.41%, along with enhanced operational stability. Efficient manipulation of crystallization and control over defects are crucial for optimizing the performance and durability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this study, a novel organic multifunctional additive, 2‐(furan‐3‐yl)ethanamine hydrochloride (FFEACl), is introduced which plays a pivotal role in regulating the crystallization process of FAPbI3. Incorporating FFEACl into the perovskite precursor solution effectively suppresses the formation of undesirable non‐perovskite phase impurities while promoting the oriented crystallization of the α‐phase FAPbI3. Moreover, the addition of FFEACl leads to a more uniform surface potential and reduced defect density in the resulting FAPbI3 film. Consequently, the top‐performing PSC exhibits an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.41%, along with enhanced operational stability. Notably, the fabricated PSCs maintain over 80% of their initial PCE even after 1000 h of continuous operation under one‐sun illumination. The findings present a facile and effective strategy for fabricating perovskite photovoltaic devices with exceptional performance and long‐term reliability.

Abstract:A dopant‐free small‐molecule hole‐transport material (HTM) based on D–A1–A2‐conjugated structure is employed in perovskite solar cells and achieves a power conversion efficiency of 17.8%, comparable to the performance of inorganic HTM NiOx. The densely packed π‐conjugated structure facilitates the formation of a dense and hydrophobic film, effectively preventing water intrusion and enabling the device to maintain over 95% of its initial efficiency after 60 d. In perovskite solar cells (PSCs), the selection of the hole‐transport material (HTM) markedly influences both the achievement of high efficiency and overall stability. This study outlines the synthesis of a dopant‐free HTM founded on the donor–acceptor1–acceptor2 (D–A1–A2)‐conjugated structure and its integration into PSCs. The ensuing PSCs showcase a power conversion efficiency of 17.8%, comparable to NiOx inorganic HTM‐based devices and surpassing poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate polymeric HTM‐based devices. The efficiency comparable to NiOx is attributed to the efficient hole extraction and transport facilitated by the conjugated π junctions in the specifically designed structure. Furthermore, these devices exhibit enhanced stability, maintaining 95% of their initial performance for 60 d in an N2 atmosphere without encapsulation. The improved stability primarily arises from the hydrophobic nature of the HTM. The larger π‐conjugated molecules lead to a denser film by reducing intermolecular space, effectively retarding water intrusion and providing superior protection to the perovskite layer. Thus, the dopant‐free D–A1–A2 HTM with an extended conjugated π structure not only effectively enhances device efficiency but also substantially improves device stability.

Abstract:High‐performance inorganic–organic lead halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are often fabricated with a liquid additive such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), which retards crystallization and reduces roughness and pinholes in the perovskite layers. However, DMSO can be trapped during perovskite film formation and induce voids and undesired reaction byproducts upon later processing steps. Here, it is shown that the amount of residual DMSO can be reduced in as‐spin‐coated films significantly through use of preheated substrates, or a so‐called hot‐casting method. Hot casting increases the perovskite film thickness given the same concentration of solutions, which allows for reducing the perovskite solution concentration. By reducing the amount of DMSO in proportion to the concentration of perovskite precursors and using hot casting, it is possible to fabricate perovskite layers with improved perovskite–substrate interfaces by suppressing the formation of byproducts, which increase trap density and accelerate degradation of the perovskite layers. The best‐performing PSCs exhibit a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 23.4% (23.0% stabilized efficiency) under simulated solar illumination. Furthermore, encapsulated devices show considerably reduced post‐burn‐in decay, retaining 75% and 90% of their initial and post‐burn‐in efficiencies after 3000 h of operation with maximum power point tracking (MPPT) under high power of ultraviolet (UV)‐containing continuous light exposure.

Abstract:Improving the intrinsic film quality of metal halide perovskites is very critical to increase the power conversion efficiency and long-term stability of perovskite solar cells. Here we report a multifunctional, non-volatile additive that can be used to modulate the kinetics of perovskite film growth through a hydrogen-bond-bridged intermediate phase. The additive enables the formation of large perovskite grains and coherent grain growth from bottom to the surface of the film. The enhanced film morphology results in significantly reduced non-radiative recombinations, thus boosting the power conversion efficiency of inverted (p–i–n) solar cells to 24.8% (24.5% certified) with a low energy loss of 0.36 eV. The unencapsulated devices exhibit improved thermal stability with a T 98 lifetime beyond 1,000 h under continuous heating at 65 ± 5 °C in a nitrogen-filled glovebox. This effective approach can also be applied to wide-bandgap perovskites and large-area devices to show reduced voltage loss and high efficiency.

Abstract:Lead‐free inorganic CsSnI2.6Br0.4 perovskite‐based solar cells with a record efficiency of 11.2% are achieved via introducing dimethyl ketoxime (DMKO) as a multifunctional additive. The grain surface located DMKO not only mitigates Sn2+ oxidation but also passivates Sn(II)‐related defects, forming an in situ encapsulation of the perovskite, which results in greatly enhanced ambient stability of the corresponding device. Organic‐free and lead‐free CsSnI3 perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have recently gained growing attention as a promising template to mitigate the thermal instability and lead toxicity of hybrid lead‐based PSCs. However, the relatively low device efficiency due to the high content of Sn(II)‐related defects hinders its further development. Herein, highly performed CsSnI3−xBrx compositional perovskite‐based PSCs are achieved by using dimethyl ketoxime (C3H7NO, DMKO) as a multifunctional additive. As a commercially used deoxidant, DMKO can effectively neutralize the oxygen molecule and reduce Sn4+ back to Sn2+, enhancing the oxidation resistance of the film. Besides, the electron‐rich oxime group (NOH) in DMKO tends to interact with Sn2+ ions with extremely low adsorption energy less than −15 eV and inhibits defect formation, resulting in films with low defect density. The corresponding PSCs deliver a considerable open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.75 V with a record efficiency as high as 11.2%, which represents the highest reported efficiency for lead‐free all‐inorganic PSCs thus far. More importantly, the grain surface distributed DMKO provides an in situ encapsulation of the perovskite, which results in greatly enhanced ambient stability of the un‐encapsulated devices.

Abstract:The inadequate crystallization of the two‐step method has always puzzled researchers in perovskite solar cells. Two kinds of metal‐organic frameworks to increase interface contact and reduce the nucleation crystallization barrier, resulting in a high‐quality film are introduced. The modified perovskite solar cells exhibited a champion efficiency of 24.17% with good humidity and thermal stability. The two‐step sequential deposition method is considered a potential way for the large‐scale manufacture of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with high power conversion efficiency and reproducibility. However, the dense lead iodide (PbI2) film interferes with its full contact with organic solutions, resulting in an inadequate reaction at the interface. Herein, 2 kinds of metal‐organic framework (MOF) are introduced, amorphous Ni‐MOF‐74 (amNi‐MOF‐74) and crystalline Zn‐MOF‐74 (crZn‐MOF‐74), into PbI2 for regulating crystallization. Compared to crZn‐MOF‐74, the incorporation of amNi‐MOF‐74 exhibited rapid nucleation, resulting in high‐quality perovskite films with large grain size, low trap density, and enhanced charge transfer between the perovskite and charge transfer layers. Meanwhile, the content of unstable phase PbI2 left in perovskite films due to insufficient reaction is also reduced. The amNi‐MOF‐74 modified PSCs exhibited a champion power conversion efficiency of 24.17% with good humidity and thermal stability. The unencapsulated device maintains 90% of its initial efficiency after 1000 h storage in dark ambient conditions with ≈30% relative humidity. This strategy provides an effective approach for promoting the crystallization process of perovskite and fabricating efficient and stable PSCs.

All‐In‐One Additive Enabled Efficient and Stable Narrow‐Bandgap Perovskites for Monolithic All‐Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells

Abstract:Herein, an all‐in‐one additive AMPH is proposed, which can not only function as a reducing agent to suppress Sn4+ formation, but also can slow down the crystallization and enhance oxidation resistance of Sn‐Pb films. This advancement enables 23.07% efficient Sn‐Pb perovskite solar cells and 28.73% efficient all‐perovskite tandem solar cells with improved operational stability. Hybrid tin‐lead (Sn‐Pb) perovskites have garnered increasing attention due to their crucial role in all‐perovskite tandem cells for surpassing the efficiency limit of single‐junction solar cells. However, the easy oxidation of Sn2+ and fast crystallization of Sn‐based perovskite present significant challenges for achieving high‐quality hybrid Sn‐Pb perovskite films, thereby limiting the device's performance and stability. Herein, an all‐in‐one additive, 2‐amino‐3‐mercaptopropanoic acid hydrochloride (AMPH) is proposed, which can function as a reducing agent to suppress the formation of Sn4+ throughout the film preparation. Furthermore, the strong binding between AMPH and Sn‐based precursor significantly slows down the crystallization process, resulting in a high‐quality film with enhanced crystallinity. The remaining AMPH and its oxidation products within the film contribute to improves oxidation resistance and a substantial reduction in defect density, specifically Sn vacancies. Benefiting from the multifunctionalities of AMPH, a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 23.07% is achieved for single‐junction narrow‐bandgap perovskite solar cells. The best‐performing monolithic all‐perovskite tandem cell also exhibits a PCE of 28.73% (certified 27.83%), which is among the highest efficiency reported yet. The tandem devices can also retain over 85% of their initial efficiencies after 500 hours of continuous operation at the maximum power point under one‐sun illumination.

Abstract:Abstract Poor crystallinity of perovskite and extensive defects around grain boundaries are the acknowledged hindrances to obtaining high efficiency and long‐term stability for organic metal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, a 2D covalent organic framework (2D COF) nanosheets, [(TPA) 1 (TPhT) 1 ] CN , is first in situ synthesized in a PbI 2 layer with a highly crystalline structure to precisely regulate the crystallization process of perovskite in the sequential deposition method. The existence of 2D COF nanosheets can decelerate intermolecular interdiffusion and induce perovskite crystals to grow along (110) planes with enlarged grain size. Meanwhile, 2D COF nanosheets distributed around the grain boundaries reduce the defect density and promote carriers transporting in the perovskite film. The superior properties of the perovskite film afford the champion PSC device with a power conversion efficiency of 22.04%, which is over 10% higher than the control device. Moreover, the target PSC also demonstrates outstanding long‐term stability. It can maintain over 90% of its initial value after 90 days storage in ambient conditions for unencapsulated devices. This work paves a new path for regulating the crystallization process of perovskites via 2D crystalline materials.

Nevertheless, the thermal instability of MA and the tendency of mixed halide compositions to phase segregate limit the long‐term stability of PSCs. However, reports of MA‐free and/or Br‐free compositions are rare in the community since their performance is generally inferior. Here, a strategy is presented to achieve highly efficient and stable PSCs that are altogether cesium (Cs)‐free, MA‐free and Br‐free. An antisolvent quenching process is used to in‐situ deposit a polymeric interlayer to promote the growth of phase‐pure formamidinium lead tri‐iodide perovskite crystals with reduced defect density and to assist in photo‐excited charge extraction. The PSCs developed are among the best‐performing reported for such compositions. Moreover, the PSCs show superior stability under continuous exposure to both illumination and 85 °C heat.</p>

Abstract:High-purity precursor materials are vital for high-efficiency perovskite solar cells (PSCs) to reduce defect density caused by impurities in perovskite. In this study, we present aqueous synthesized perovskite microcrystals as precursor materials for PSCs. Our approach enables kilogram-scale mass production and synthesizes formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI 3 ) microcrystals with up to 99.996% purity, with an average value of 99.994 ± 0.0015%, from inexpensive, low-purity raw materials. The reduction in calcium ions, which made up the largest impurity in the aqueous solution, led to the greatest reduction in carrier trap states, and its deliberate introduction was shown to decrease device performance. With these purified precursors, we achieved a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.6% (25.3% certified) in inverted PSCs and retained 94% of the initial PCE after 1000 hours of continuous simulated solar illumination at 50°C.

Abstract:An effective additive engineering strategy is reported where N‐succinimidyl 6‐maleimidohexanoate (NSMH) with bidirectional active site and hydrophobic alkyl chains are introduced into perovskite precursor to eliminate undercoordinated Pb2+ traps in perovskite films. The efficiency improves from 20.67% to 22.40% after NSMH modification along with improved stability. The nonradiative recombination induced by trap states at the surface and grain boundaries impedes the further increase of power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Consequently, it is highly desirable to minimize the trap‐assisted nonradiative recombination in perovskite films. Here, an effective additive engineering strategy is reported where N‐succinimidyl 6‐maleimidohexanoate (denoted as NSMH) with multiple active sites and hydrophobic alkyl chains were incorporated for fully eliminating undercoordinated Pb2+ traps in perovskite films. It is revealed that improved crystallinity and reduced defect density are achieved, which is ascribed to the strong coordination interaction between the carbonyl groups at both sides of NSMH molecules and Pb2+. As a result, the NSMH‐modified device exhibits a champion PCE of 22.40% with negligible hysteresis, which is significantly higher than 20.67% of the control device. The unencapsulated modified device exhibits no degradation while the control device degrades to 82% of its initial PCE after storing for 1536 h in a relative humidity of 10–20% at room temperature in the dark.

Abstract:Longevity is a long-standing concern for organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Recently, the use of low dimensional perovskite has been proven to be a promising strategy to improve the stability of PSCs. Herein, it is demonstrated that 1D perovskitoid based on 2-diethylaminoethylchloride cations can act as a template to induce 1D@3D perovskite structure, leading to smoother surface texture, longer charge-carrier lifetime, smaller residual tensile strain, and reduced surface-defect density in the perovskite film. With this strategy, highly efficient and stable 1D@3D PSC with excellent reproducibility, showing a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 22.9% under standard AM 1.5 G one sun illumination is realized. The unencapsulated optimized devices can retain 94.7%, 92.4%, and 90.0% of their initial PCEs for 2100, 2200, and 2200 h under ambient air, 85 °C and illumination conditions, respectively.

Abstract:One of the major challenges confronted with perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is reducing the trap-state density and structural defect of perovskite films. Additive engineering is an effective strategy to mitigate this issue. In this work, we introduce an additive, 6-aminoquinoline monohydrochloride (AQCl), with strong electron-donating amino groups, into CsMAFA-based perovskite precursor solution, which suppresses the formation of lead iodide during the perovskite crystallization process through strong interaction with Pb<sup>2+</sup> ions. This introduction ameliorates perovskite crystallization, mitigates structural defect and trap-state density, modulates the energy array between the perovskite layer and the hole transport layer, and alleviates nonradiative recombination of charge carriers. The reference PSC device exhibits an efficiency of 19.24%; in contrast to this, the PSC device doped with AQCl in proper concentration obtains a champion efficiency of 21.66%. The results of this simple operating procedure significantly improve performance and demonstrate that additive engineering is beneficial to further optimize the crystallization process of perovskites.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:A vapor‐to‐solid deposition of high‐quality large‐area perovskite films is developed via a new process based on a 2D intermediated phase. Efficiencies of 21.1% and 20.1% are achieved for perovskite modules with active areas of 12.5 and 48.0 cm2, respectively. Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) can enable renewable electricity generation at low levelized costs, subject to the invention of an economically feasible technology for their large‐scale fabrication, like vapor deposition. This approach is effective for the fabrication of small area (<1 cm2) PSCs, but its scale‐up to produce high‐efficiency larger area modules has been limited by a severe imbalance between the vapor‐solid reaction kinetics and the mass‐transport of the volatile ammonium salt precursor. In this study, an amidine‐based low‐dimensional perovskite is introduced as an intermediate of the solid‐vapor reaction to help resolve this limitation. This improves reaction pathway produces unique vertically monolithic grains with no detectable horizontal boundaries, which is used to produce 1.0 cm2 PSCs with an efficiency of 22.1%, as well as 12.5 and 48 cm2 modules delivering 21.1% and 20.1% efficiency, respectively. The modules retain ≈85% of their initial performance after 900 h of continuous operation (ISOS‐L‐1 protocol) and ≈100% after 2800 h of storage in an ambient environment (ISOS‐D‐1 protocol).
