Abstract:Background: The 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic brings critical health problems to workers in many occupations, including the student population. Findings suggest university students are suffering from moderate to high levels of burnout. Mindfulness is considered to serve as a buffer against burnout, where the underlying mechanisms remains unknown. The aim of the study was to investigate the relationships between mindfulness and burnout among university students in China during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to explore the mediating roles of perceived social support and emotion in the association. Methods: A total of 982 participants were recruited to complete an online survey one year after the COVID-19 outbreak, which consisted of the Five-Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), and the Learning Burnout of University Students scale. Path analysis was adopted to test the hypothesized theoretical model. Results: Mindfulness was significantly ( p <0.01) correlated to burnout of university students, which relationship was mediated by the interactions between perceived social support, positive affect and negative affect (model fitness: χ 2 /df=1.14, SRMR=0.009, RMSEA=0.026, CFI=0.999, TLI=0.995). Conclusions: Mindfulness may be a protective factor against burnout of university students during the COVID-19 pandemic, while perceived social support, positive affect and negative affect play important roles in the association. Mindfulness-based interventions are suggested to reduce burnout in this population, and psychosocial factors like emotion and social support should be emphasized in the procedure.

Abstract:Burnout has been viewed as a work-induced condition combining exhaustion, cynicism, and professional inefficacy. Using correlational analyses, an exploratory structural equation modeling bifactor analysis, structural regression analyses, and a network analysis, we examined the claim that burnout should not be mistaken for a depressive syndrome. The study involved 1,258 educational staff members. Burnout was assessed with the Maslach Burnout Inventory–General Survey and depression with the Patient Health Questionnaire–9 and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Illegitimate work tasks and work–nonwork interferences were additionally measured. We notably found that (a) on average, exhaustion, cynicism, and professional inefficacy correlated less strongly with each other than with depression; (b) exhaustion―burnout’s core―was more strongly associated with depression than with either cynicism or professional inefficacy; (c) the Patient Health Questionnaire–9 did not correlate more strongly with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale than with exhaustion; (d) exhaustion and depression loaded primarily on a general distress/dysphoria factor in the exploratory structural equation modeling bifactor analysis; (e) on average, burnout and depression were related to job stressors in a similar manner; (f) work–nonwork interferences were strongly linked to distress/dysphoria. Overall, burnout showed no syndromal unity and lacked discriminant validity. Clinicians should systematically assess depressive symptoms in individuals presenting with a complaint of “burnout.”

Abstract:Background: Burnout, depression, and anxiety are highly prevalent among medical students, which often leads to their attrition. We aim to assess the inter-relationships of depression, burnout, and anxiety symptoms with dropout intention among Chinese medical undergraduates using the network analysis. Method: A total of 3,648 Chinese medical undergraduates were recruited through snowball sampling. Learning burnout scale, 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), and General Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) was used to assess burnout, depression, and anxiety symptoms, respectively. We used the EBICglasso model to estimate the network. We compared the network based on gender, study phase, and clinical experience. Results: After removing repeated submissions and incorrect responses to the trap question, 3,536 participants were included in the final analysis. The prevalence of burnout, depression, anxiety, and dropout intention was 38, 62.7, 38.4, and 39% respectively, which is consistent with previous findings. Network analysis suggested that anxiety and depression items clustered together and displayed several strong bridge connections, while burnout items formed another cluster. All the strongest edges were within the respective distress. Cynicism symptoms 'I am fed up with study' and 'I want to study but I feel that studying is boring' were the most central symptoms, while 'fatigue' and 'worthless' were the bridge symptoms within the burnout-depression-anxiety network. Other central symptoms included 'worthless', 'I can handle my courses', 'nervous', and 'uncontrollable worry'. Cynicism symptoms 'I am interested in my major' and 'I feel that the knowledge I have learned is useless' were mostly related to dropout intention. Gender, study phase, and clinical experience didn't affect the global strength of the burnout-depression-anxiety network. Conclusion: Our results indicated the predominance of cynicism symptoms within the burnout-depression-anxiety network and its substantial impact on dropout intention, suggesting that early detection and intervention for cynicism symptoms in Chinese medical students are in urgent need. Other central and bridge symptoms might also serve as potential targets for the prevention and treatment of burnout, depression, and anxiety among medical students. For example, studies suggest cognitive-behavioral therapy could quickly improve 'worthless', which might be beneficial in treating burnout, depression, and anxiety in medical students.

Abstract:Background: Burnout is very important to nurses' physical and mental health and career development. Current approaches to assessing nurse burnout tend to use a total score modeling paradigm to explore the impact of external factors on burnout. The purpose of this study is to delve into the item-level relationship between nurse burnout and its influencing factors at both the social and psychological levels using a network analysis approach. Methods: This study was conducted in June 2023 and 1,005 nurses from 4 hospitals out of 8 tertiary care hospitals in Harbin were selected to participate in this study using whole cluster sampling method. Measurements included a general demographic questionnaire, Trait coping styles questionnaire, Organizational commitment questionnaire, Work-family conflict scale, Transformational leadership questionnaire, and Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey. Results: Our results suggest that "C1 Time-Based work interference with family" showed the strongest centrality and bridging in the overall network. This finding underscores its centrality to burnout. Other strongest bridge symptoms included "E2 Reduced personal accomplishment" and "A1 Positive coping styles" indicating their strongest connections to other clusters. Conclusions: Nurse administrators should be encouraged to pay more attention to nurses' work situations and family distress, and to help nurses in a flexible way.

Abstract:Background: Burnout and depression have overlapping symptoms, but the extent of overlap remains unclear, and the complex relationship between burnout and depression in pharmacists is rarely explored. Methods: We investigated burnout and depression in 1,322 frontline pharmacists, and explored the complex relationship between burnout and depression in those pharmacists using network analysis. Results: Network analysis showed that there were 5 communities. A partial overlap was found between burnout and depressive symptoms in pharmacists. The nodes MBI-6 (I have become more callous toward work since I took this job), D18 (My life is meaningless), and D10 (I get tired for no reason) had the highest expected influence value. D1 (I feel down-hearted and blue) and D14 (I have no hope for the future) were bridge symptoms connected with emotional exhaustion and reduced professional efficacy, respectively. Conclusion: A partial overlap exists between burnout and depressive symptoms in pharmacists, mainly in the connection between the emotional exhaustion and reduced professional efficacy and the depressive symptoms. Potential core targets identified in this study may inform future prevention and intervention.

Abstract:Burnout, depression, anxiety, and stress negatively impact the well-being and retention of healthcare professionals. The interplay of these symptoms is understudied. Utilizing network analysis, this study examined the interrelationships among these symptom clusters in clinical therapists in China. An anonymous survey was conducted among clinical therapists from 41 tertiary psychiatric hospitals in China. Burnout was assessed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Service Survey (MBI-HSS), while symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress were assessed via the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21). Analyses were performed to identify central symptoms and bridge symptoms of this network. A total of 419 participants were included in this survey. The prevalence rate for burnout, depression, anxiety, and stress was 19.8%, 22.2%, 17.9%, and 8.6%, respectively. Network analysis indicated that stress symptoms had the highest expected influence values, closely followed by emotional exhaustion from MBI-HSS. Notably, emotional exhaustion emerged as the strongest bridge of expected influence. The stability of the expected influence and bridge expected influence was robust, with coefficients at 0.75. The study's findings underscore the importance of recognizing the central symptoms and bridge symptoms, which could lead to more effective early detection and intervention for burnout, depression, anxiety, and stress among clinical therapists.

Abstract:Background — The mental health of medical students has long been a concern. Symptoms of depression and burnout are common among medical students, but the overlap of symptoms of both diseases with risk factors remains unclear. The goal of this study was to determine the prevalence of burnout and depression symptoms’ overlap in medical students. Methods — This cross-sectional study was conducted among students of the clinical course (3rd, 4th and 5th years). A multistage stratified random sampling design was used to select 284students that were offered a validated and structured questionnaire that included a modified Oldenburg Burnout Inventory and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 to assess their emotional burnout and depression, respectively. Chi-square and multinomial regression analyses were done to identify overlapping symptoms of burnout and depression with association of risk factors with dependent variable. Results — Out of 284 students, 13% had symptoms of severe depression, 24% had high burnout symptoms, and 32% had overlapping symptoms of burnout and depression. In regression analysis, higher academic year more than 2 times (5th year, OR 2.03, 95% CI 1.42-7.96, p-value 0.004) and living at dormitory more than 3 times (OR 3.97, 95% CI 1.97-5.01, p-value 0.003) were more likely associated with more extensive overlap of burnout and depression symptoms. Conclusion — There is a high prevalence of burnout and depression symptoms among medical students, with a strong association between the two disorders. Early burnout detection and psychiatric therapies given to affected students and these disorders management training at medical school, may help reduce negative consequences of these conditions.

Abstract:Objective To explore the comprehensive influence factors of nurses' job burnout and to provide evidence for the making of preventive measures.Methods A total of 1500 nurses in Hangzhou city were recruited and investigated with Maslach Burnout Inventory(MBI),Nurses' Job Stressor Scale,General Self-Efficacy Scale and Trait Coping Questionnaire.Results Hierarchical regression analysis and structural equation modeling showed that the variables of personal coping resources(self-efficacy,positive coping and perceived social support)and variables of organizational factors(workload and organi-zational atmosphere)had significant influence on the three factors of job burnout.Conclusions The integration of various measures such as strengthening nurses' self-efficacy,positive coping and perceived social support as well as reducing workload and improving organizational atmosphere is the effective strategy to prevent nurses' job burnout.

Abstract:Background: The dynamics of education and student life have changed since the COVID-19 pandemic. Our society, especially the education system, has become largely dependent on the Internet. This paradigm shifts largely took place in the last few decades. As such, there are various ways in which we cannot comprehend the impact that the Internet can have on student psychology, and how multiple other factors could influence that. Internet addiction and its relationship with academic burnout, along with the impact of loneliness, are all essential factors that must be discussed candidly in the post-COVID-19 era. Hence, the objective of this study was, therefore, to explore the relationship between Internet addiction, loneliness, and academic burnout among Chinese college students as well as the mediating role of loneliness. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional questionnaire survey at a Chinese university from October to November 2022. In total, 810 valid respondents were selected via random cluster sampling using the well-established Internet Addiction, Loneliness, and Academic Burnout Scale. The primary approach of mediation analysis and structural equation modeling testing examined the relationships among the three components. Results: Internet addiction could be responsible for academic burnout among college students. Loneliness partially mediates the relationship between Internet addiction and academic burnout. In a mediated way, different types of loneliness contribute to different types of academic burnout. Conclusion: Psychological interventions for loneliness, especially emotional loneliness prevention, are the critical aspects of the problem of Internet addiction accompanied with academic burnout. The causal relationship between Internet addiction and academic burnout, possibly of a two-way nature, needs to be further explored in the next future.

Abstract:The outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has posed a great impact on people’s mental health, especially for undergraduate students. This study aimed to compare the mental health conditions and academic burnout between medical and non-medical undergraduates in China when the COVID-19 pandemic is mitigating. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 4,972 undergraduates between October 2020 and April 2021, when the pandemic was basically under control. The survey included basic demographics information and standardized scales to evaluate depression, anxiety, perceived stress, daytime sleepiness, alcohol abuse/dependence, quality of life, fatigue, and academic burnout. Compared with medical undergraduates, non-medical undergraduates had higher rates of moderate to severe depression symptoms (29.1% vs. 17.9%, P < 0.001), moderate to severe anxiety symptoms (19.7% vs. 8.9%, P < 0.001), alcohol abuse/dependence (16.3% vs.10.3%, P < 0.001), excessive daytime sleepiness (47.4% vs. 43.4%, P = 0.018), high perceived stress (34.7% vs. 22.2%, P < 0.001), high level of fatigue (51.8% vs. 42.2%, P < 0.001), low QOL (35.8% vs. 21.4%, P < 0.001), and higher academic burnout score (59.4 vs. 57.5, P < 0.001). Being non-medical undergraduates, depression, alcohol abuse/dependence, excessive daytime sleepiness, and high perceived stress were positively associated with academic burnout, while high QOL was negatively associated with the burnout (all P < 0.001). Excessive daytime sleepiness was the strongest predictor for academic burnout.

Abstract:Although fruitful achievements have been explored about job burnout, little is known about burnout in the field of social interaction among college students. To address this limitation, this study defined the concept of Social Burnout and developed a measurement tool for it. The study adopted the method of combining qualitative research with quantitative research. After the qualitative study, we gathered examples of social burnout and finished item writing. Using convenient sampling and theoretical sampling methods, six different samples were recruited for reliability and validity testing. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) revealed the scale's two-factor structure: emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. Cronbach's alpha measured the internal consistency of the social burnout scale (SBS), which was excellent (Cronbach's alpha of emotional exhaustion = 0.94; depersonalization = 0.82; the overall = 0.92). Susequently, the method of calculating AVE and CR evaluated the scale's convergent and discriminant validity, which were relatively good (AVE of emotional exhaustion = 0.60, depersonalization = 0.59; CR of emotional exhaustion = 0.93, depersonalization = 0.81). Then, regression analysis verified the nomological network and criterion-related validity ( r = −0.30, p < 0.01; r = −0.39, p < 0.01; β = −0.25, p < 0.01). The SBS was shown to be a reliable and appropriate measure for assessing students' social burnout. Furthermore, the SBS is recommended for use in academic research and by healthcare professionals to measure students' social distress. Further validation studies of this scale are needed in other cultural contexts.

Abstract:Background Previous research has explored the associations between anxiety, depression, and academic burnout primarily from a variable‐level perspective. However, there is limited understanding of which symptoms might play a significant role in anxiety, depression, and academic burnout among adolescents at different stages. Methods This study included 7,286 adolescents aged 10 to 18. Questionnaires assessed participants' anxiety, depression, and academic burnout. Network analysis was conducted on the overall sample and segmented by early, middle, and late adolescence to explore relationships between symptoms and variations in symptom expression across these stages, aiming to propose effective interventions targeting anxiety, depression, and academic burnout symptoms in early, middle, and late adolescence. Results The study found that "feeling that studying is meaningless" emerged as a core symptom in the overall sample. Additionally, "acting or speaking slowly" emerged as a core symptom in early adolescence, while "the thought of dying or hurting" and "feeling bad about yourself, letting your family down" were prominent in middle adolescence, and "easily annoyed or irritable" and "feeling tired" may be prioritized in late adolescence. The varying central symptoms across different adolescent stages suggest the need for targeted interventions. Conclusion These findings underscore the importance of interventions tailored to specific symptoms to meet the unique needs of adolescents at different developmental stages.

Academic burnout and depression of Chinese medical students in the pre-clinical years: the buffering hypothesis of resilience and social support

Abstract:The present study explored whether the two psychosocial resources including resilience and social support serve as moderating factors in the process between academic burnout and depression among medical students, and investigated factors that associated with depression. We applied Learning Burnout Scale of Undergraduates, Beck Depression Inventory-II, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, and Social Support Rating Scale as tools for an investigation with 1722 Chinese medical students. Academic burnout positively correlated with depression while resilience and social support negatively related to depression. Hierarchical regression implied that resilience moderated burnout and depression while social support did not show a buffer effect between the same variables. Building resilience and enhancing their social support are essential for preventing depression in their college life. It is also worth noting that resilience can still work against depression even when academic burnout emerged.

Abstract:Objective: To examine the reliability and validity of MBI-SS and discuss the academic characteristics that affect burnout. Methods: 353 undergraduate students were administrated MBI-SS and Academic Characteristic Survey. Results: Confirmatory factor analyses showed that the expected three-factor structure of the adapted versions of the MBI- Students Survey (including Exhaustion, Cynicism, and Reduced Efficacy) fitted to the data. Exploratory factor analyses showed that the Academic Characteristic Survey includes six dimensions. The result of Regression showed that 44.4% variance of student burnout can be explained by Academic Characteristics. Conclusion: Student burnout includes three dimensions: Exhaustion, Cynicism and Reduced efficacy. Academic self-efficacy,academic stress,relationship with teachers and relationship with fellow students are significant predictors for student burnout.

Abstract:Background: Although the relationship between burnout and depression is well-known and frequently studied, the specific mechanisms by which burnout develops into depression have not been fully established. Based on theoretical and empirical research on resilience and self-esteem, this study constructs a chain mediating model to test whether they play a mediating role in burnout and depression among medical staff. Methods: A cross-sectional study with a sample consisting of 602 medical staff was carried out by convenient sampling method. They all completed a self-report questionnaire with demographic information, burnout, resilience, self-esteem and depression. SPSS26 and Mplus8.3 were used to analyze the data. Results: Burnout was found to positively predict depression of medical staff and negatively predict resilience and self-esteem. Resilience was a mediator between burnout and depression. Self-esteem was also a mediator between them. Meanwhile, resilience and self-esteem had a chain mediating effect on burnout and depression. Limitations: The cross-sectional study does not permit causal inferences. And the data used is self-reported. Conclusions: Burnout takes a toll on resilience and self-esteem, which can eventually lead to depression. These findings contribute to the understanding of the predictive effects of burnout on mental health and provide practical implications for the prevention and intervention of mental health among medical staff.
A New Component of Core Self-Evaluation in Predicting Burnout:Collective Self-Esteem

Abstract:The objective of the present study is to identify the structure of core self-evaluation and explore its relationship with burnout among Chinese college students.One hundred eighty-four university students completed the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey(MBI-SS),Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale(SES),General Self-Efficacy Scale,Rotter's Locus of Control Scale,the Neuroticism dimension of Eysenck Personality Questionnaire(EPQ),and Luhtanen Crocke's Collective Self-esteem Scale.Results indicate that three of the four classic dimensions of core self-evaluation—self-esteem,general self-efficacy and collective self-esteem correlate positively with all three burnout dimensions,whereas neuroticism correlate negatively with all three burnout dimensions.On the other hand,locus of control fail to correlate significantly with any burnout dimensions.In three hierarchical models predicting burnout dimensions,collective self-esteem demonstrats significant increment variances of 2.4%-4.9% beyond four western classic core self-evaluation dimensions.The present study reveales an improtant component of core self-evaluation among Chinese college students:collective self-esteem.

Abstract:Problematic internet use (PIU) and depression usually co-occur and are common among college students. According to network theory, it may be attributed to the interplay of symptoms that connect these two mental health problems. However, most studies have failed to examine complex and subtle connections at the symptom level and have not clarified how PIU and depression symptoms are intercorrelated, which symptoms serve as the source of comorbidity (i.e., the central symptoms), and whether such a comorbidity mechanism would change with higher grades. To explore these questions, this study examined four contemporaneous networks and three cross-lagged panel networks, visualizing the symptoms as nodes and the connections between symptoms as edges. A total of 2,420 college students ( M age = 18.35, SD = 0.84; 67.98 % girls) completed four annual surveys. Overall, the results of contemporaneous networks and cross-lagged panel networks indicated that (a) PIU and depression symptoms are intercorrelated; (b) the core symptoms responsible for comorbidity mostly belonged to PIU, and (c) the comorbidity mechanism would change with time. These findings explain the dynamic relation between PIU and depression and identify possible primary symptoms that comorbidity programs can mitigate at different stages of the college years.

Canonical Correlation Analysis on Life Stress and Learning Burnout of College Students in Taiwan.

Abstract:Introduction With rapid changes in social, political, and economic life of global society, students in school often face many life stresses, such as academic pressure, emotional distress, role ambiguity, career and achievement stress, stress from family expectations, value conflict, emotional instability, and feelings of alienation. Excessive stress can impose a negative impact on students' learning, even placing students at risk of learning burnout. (1) Previous studies of burnout focused primarily on professionals who help others. These studies found that the long-term stress of work and over-stimulation of individual, mental, physical, and other resources, caused depletion of energy and physical or mental exhaustion. It often led individuals to feel helpless and to display symptoms of emotional exhaustion. (2-3) Maslach & Schaufeli (4) referred to this phenomenon as "the three-factor model of career burnout". Until now the theory has been a major reference for researchers who study career burnout. According to the theory, career burnout has three primary aspects: (1) low sense of achievement--a negative reaction of sense of achievement regarding the individual and the individual's work. The individuals feels depressed, withdrawn, ineffective, and generally unresponsive; (2) depersonalization--a negative emotion associated with personal interactions, the individual loses his or her original enthusiasm or attitude, acts or reacts inappropriately toward his or her clients and colleagues; (3) emotional exhaustion--a mental and physical sense of powerlessness, the individual feels physical exhaustion, energy depletion, emotional exhaustion, loss of pleasure, lethargy. Many of these studies targeted professionals whose work requires them to have a close interaction with others such as doctors, nurses, social workers, teachers, and police officers. These professionals not only must possess and provide professional knowledge or skills to others, but also must have frequent interactions with groups of people. When the working conditions are less than ideal and potential problems occur (e.g., personality, personal life, etc.), these professionals may gradually lose their idealism, energy and goals. After a period of time, they may eventually suffer from career burnout. The general version of the Maslach Burnout Survey (Maslach Burnout Inventory- General Survey, MBIGS)5 has been applied to many areas when studying burnout. Researchers who are concerned with students' psychological development have gradually extended the career burnout theory to academic learning areas. (6-11) These studies found that burnout also appears in students' population. In the view of Meier & Schmeck (12) and McCarthy, Pretty & Catano, (13) learning burnout is one of the common experiences of college students. According to researches, (14-15) students who suffer from learning burnout often display the following characteristics: (1) Decreased learning and learning motivation. (2) Negative changes in their affective and cognitive function, significant loss learning enthusiasm and energy. (3) Inability to properly cope with stress and frustration with homework; appearing not to care about schoolwork. (4). Appear to have depleted physical resources. (5). Negative learning experiences from excessive high expectations, thus losing their sense of accomplishment. (6). Display alienation or withdrawal behaviors toward school tasks and activities, such as being late for school, leaving early, being absent or dropping out. Learning burnout is an expansion of the idea of career burnout. Some researchers pointed out, (6,14,15) the symptoms include the emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and appearance of low personal accomplishment. From our teaching experience in Taiwan, we found that college students in Taiwan may show negative learning emotion in addition to the symptoms mentioned above. The cause of individual feeling burnout is related to a number of factors, but stress factors are the most widely discussed. …

Abstract:Previous studies have demonstrated a strong association between depression and job burnout among healthcare professionals, but the results have been inconsistent, and there is a lack of in-depth exploration of such a relationship among different healthcare professions.
