Abstract:We examined the effects of warming (+5 ℃) and reduced natural precipitation (-50%) on nutrient status and physiological indices of Cunninghamia lanceolata seedlings during winter and summer in subtropical China. The results showed that seasonal changes in temperature and precipitation caused the seasonal differences in plant nutrient contents and metabolites levels. Contents of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in leaves in winter were significantly higher than those in summer. In summer, reduced precipitation and warming had no significant effects on antioxidant enzyme activities in C. lanceolata leaves. In winter, superoxide dismutase and peroxidase activities in the leaves significantly decreased with reduced precipitation by 20.7% and 17.8%. Additionally, in winter, warming treatment significantly increased non-enzymatic ascorbic acid content by 132.5%. Carbon content decreased, whereas proline accumulation and nitrogen content increased under stress induced by combined warming and reduced precipitation in winter. However, carbon content increased by 3.3% under the treatment of simultaneous warming and reduced precipitation in summer. In addition, combined warming and reduced precipitation had no significant effects on the antioxidant system irrespective of the season. In conclusion, the adaptation mechanism of C. lanceolata to warming in summer might be different from that in winter. The changes in nutrient contents in C. lanceolata leaves were more sensitive to stress induced by combined warming and reduced precipitation. Nutrient demand and supply and seasonal changes in plant responses under climate change scenarios should be considered for better managing forest plantations and improving plant productivity.

Regulating carbon and water balance as a strategy to cope with warming and drought climate in Cunninghamia lanceolata in southern China

Abstract:Human activities have increased the possibility of simultaneous warming and drought, which will lead to different carbon (C) allocation and water use strategies in plants. However, there is no conclusive information from previous studies. To explore C and water balance strategies of plants in response to warming and drought, we designed a 4-year experiment that included control (CT), warming (W, with a 5°C increase in temperature), drought (D, with a 50% decrease in precipitation), and warming and drought conditions (WD) to investigate the non-structural carbohydrate (NSC), C and nitrogen (N) stoichiometry, and intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE) of leaves, roots, and litter of Cunninghamia lanceolata , a major tree species in southern China. We found that W significantly increased NSC and starch in the leaves, and increased NSC and soluble sugar is one of the components of NSC in the roots. D significantly increased leaves' NSC and starch, and increased litter soluble sugar. The NSC of the WD did not change significantly, but the soluble sugar was significantly reduced. The iWUE of leaves increased under D, and surprisingly, W and D significantly increased the iWUE of litter. The iWUE was positively correlated with NSC and soluble sugar. In addition, D significantly increased N at the roots and litter, resulting in a significant decrease in the C/N ratio. The principal component analysis showed that NSC, iWUE, N, and C/N ratio can be used as identifying indicators for C. lanceolata in both warming and drought periods. This study stated that under warming or drought, C. lanceolata would decline in growth to maintain high NSC levels and reduce water loss. Leaves would store starch to improve the resiliency of the aboveground parts, and the roots would increase soluble sugar and N accumulation to conserve water and to help C sequestration in the underground part. At the same time, defoliation was potentially beneficial for maintaining C and water balance. However, when combined with warming and drought, C. lanceolata growth will be limited by C, resulting in decreased NSC. This study provides a new insight into the coping strategies of plants in adapting to warming and drought environments.

Abstract:Climate warming is becoming an increasingly serious threat. Understanding plant stoichiometry changes under climate warming is crucial for predicting the effects of future warming on terrestrial ecosystem productivity. Nevertheless, how plant stoichiometry responds to warming when interannual rainfall variation is considered, remains poorly understood. We performed a field soil warming experiment (+5°C) using buried heating cables in subtropical areas of China from 2015 to 2018. Stoichiometric patterns of foliar C:N:P:K:Ca:Mg, non-structural carbohydrate, and stable isotope of Cunninghamia lanceolata seedlings were studied. Our results showed that soil warming decreased foliar P and K concentrations, C:Ca, P:Ca, and P:Mg ratios. However, soil warming increased foliar Ca concentration, δ 15 N value, C:P and N:P ratios. The response ratios of foliar N, C:N, and δ 15 N to soil warming were correlated with rainfall. Our findings indicate that there was non-homeostasis of N and C:N under warming conditions. Three possible reasons for this result are considered and include interannual variations in rainfall, increased loss of N, and N limitation in leaves. Piecewise structural equation models showed that stoichiometric non-homeostasis indirectly affected the growth of C. lanceolata seedlings in response to soil warming. Consequently, the growth of C. lanceolata seedlings remained unchanged under the warming treatment. Taken together, our results advance the understanding of how altered foliar stoichiometry relates to changes in plant growth in response to climate warming. Our results emphasize the importance of rainfall variations for modulating the responses of plant chemical properties to warming. This study provides a useful method for predicting the effects of climate warming on economically important timber species.

Abstract:Plant phenology plays an important role in nutrient cycling and carbon balance in forest ecosystems, but its response to the interaction of global warming and precipitation reduction remains unclear. In this study, an experiment with factorial soil warming (ambient, ambient +5 °C) and precipitation exclusion (ambient, ambient −50 %) was conducted in a subtropical Chinese fir ( Cunninghamia lanceolata ) plantation. We investigated the effects of soil warming, precipitation exclusion, and their interactions on Chinese fir phenology involving tree height and fine root growth. In the meantime, the impact of tree height growth and related climatic factors on fine root production was also assessed. The results showed that: (1) more variable phenology responses were observed in fine root growth than in tree height growth to the climatic treatments; the duration of fine root growth and tree height growth was significantly reduced by the precipitation exclusion and warming treatment, respectively; phenology differences of fine root and tree height growth caused by the solo warming and precipitation exclusion treatment were further enhanced by the combined treatment; and despite the greater inter-annual phenology stability of tree height growth than that of fine root growth, both of them showed insignificant response to all the climate treatments; (2) asynchrony of phenology between tree height and fine root growth was significantly enlarged by solo warming and precipitation exclusion treatments, and further enlarged by the combined treatment; (3) fine root production was significantly and positively correlated with air, and soil temperature, and tree height growth as well, which was altered by warming and precipitation exclusion treatments. Our results demonstrated that climatic changes significantly and differently alter phenology of, and extend the phenology asynchrony between, above and below ground plant components, and also highlight the climate-sensitive and variable nature of root phenology. Overall, these phenology responses to climatic change may weaken the close link between fine root production and tree height growth, which may result in temporal mismatch between nutrient demand and supply in Chinese fir plantation.

Abstract:AimsIncreasing temperature and nitrogen (N) deposition are major drivers of global change that will influence plant-soil systems. We aimed to understand how plant stoichiometry and nutrient limiting types could change with continued warming and N inputs in subtropical regions.MethodsIn 2014, the experiments were established in 30 mini-plots (2 × 2 m) with the following treatments: control, high N addition, low N addition, warming, warming + high N addition, and warming + low N addition. We sampled the leaf and root of Cunninghamia lanceolata and soils to assess their elemental and stoichiometric variables and δ15N under all six conditions.ResultsBoth experimental warming and N fertilization consistently induced an increase in fine-root N, P, and N:P. The N:P ratio of the mature green-leaf and soil was 7.24–11.63 and 4.79–6.56, respectively. On average, C. lanceolata showed higher proportional P resorption, but lower N resorption. The δ15N enrichment factor significantly increased in the warming and N addition treatments.ConclusionsN addition decrease leaf N content, and increased the plant growth, which was due to the effect of the N dilution of C. lanceolata. In subtropical regions, N-limitation affects the growth of C. lanceolata, and the concurrent increase in warming and N fertilization should help relieve N-limiting conditions.

Divergent Responses of Phenology and Growth to Summer and Autumnal Warming

Abstract:Plant phenology is highly sensitive to climate change, and shifts in autumnal foliar senescence are critical for plant productivity and nutrient cycling. Global warming has delayed the timing of foliar senescence, but the response of autumnal foliar senescence to nonuniform seasonal warming remains poorly understood, with experimental evidence in trees especially scarce. We therefore conducted a field experiment on seasonally asymmetric warming on 2-year-old larch (Larix principis-rupprechtii) seedlings in two hydrologically contrasting years (wet 2018 and dry 2019). Autumnal and year-round warming significantly delayed the timing of foliar senescence by 6 and 7 d in 2018, the wet year, with corresponding temperature sensitivities of 6.73 +/- 1.47 and 8.26 +/- 1.00 d/degrees C, respectively. Interestingly, the dates of senescence did not change across the warming treatments in 2019, the dry year. However, there was no significant effect of summer warming on the timing of foliar senescence neither in the wet nor dry year. The delayed autumnal foliar senescence was responsible for an increase in biomass only in the wet year, 2018. In contrast, summer warming, but not autumnal warming, increased the mortality of the seedlings in both 2018 and 2019. These results suggest that the hydrological conditions substantially modify the response of autumnal phenology and growth to seasonal warming. Autumnal warming increases growth, whereas summer warming could cause carbon starvation/hydraulic failure, reduce growth, and lead to higher mortality. Our results suggest that the functioning, ecosystem services, and sustainability of forests in the future depend on the strength and pattern of nonuniform seasonal warming. This study can inspire new research in phenology and tree growth in experiments with asymmetric warming.

Abstract:Gastrostomy is recommended for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) patients with malnutrition. There are two main methods of gastrostomy insertion: Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) and Fluoroscopic Gastrostomy (FG). The latter included Radiologically Inserted Gastrostomy (RIG) and Per-oral Image-Guided Gastrostomy (PRG). A meta-analysis was conducted to compare these approaches in terms of survival outcomes, pain occurrence and success rate, through the literature search in PubMed, Web of Science and Cochrane Library. A total of 7 studies with 701 cases (322 in PEG, 264 in RIG and 115 in PRG) were enrolled in the final analysis. The lack of differences between the comparisons (PEG vs. PRG, PEG vs. RIG and PEG vs. PRG+RIG) on 30-day mortality and survival length was confirmed. For the pooling analysis of peri- and post-procedural complications, patients with PEG had a lower incidence of pain than cases with PRG and RIG together (P < 0.001). The same trends could be found when compared with PRG and RIG, separately (P < 0.05 and P < 0.001, respectively). And PEG showed a lower rate of successful attempts than PEG and RIG (P < 0.05). For other complications, we didn't find any differences. This meta-analysis demonstrates that PEG, PRG and RIG had their intrinsic advantages. The current evidences could not determine the preference of them. Further investigations should be done to reveal the most appropriate method for ALS patients.
Different Growth and Physiological Responses of Six Subtropical Tree Species to Warming

Abstract:Quantifying changes in interspecific plant growth and physiology under climate warming will facilitate explanation of the shifts in community structure in subtropical forest. We evaluated the effects of 3 years climate warming (ca. 1°C, 2012-2015) on plant growth and physiological parameters of six subtropical tree species by translocating seedlings and soil from a higher to a lower elevation site. We found that an increase in soil/air temperature had divergent effects on six co-occurring species. Warming increased the biomass of <i>Schima superba</i> and <i>Pinus massoniana</i>, whereas it decreased their specific leaf area and intrinsic water use efficiency compared to other species. Warming decreased the foliar non-structural carbohydrates for all species. Our findings demonstrated that a warmer climate would have species-specific effects on the physiology and growth of subtropical trees, which may cause changes in the competitive balance and composition of these forests.

Abstract:Urinary 17-hydroxycorticosteroids (17-OHCS) were determined in 97 depressed patients previously classified as having unipolar or bipolar affective illness. Excretion of 17-OHCS was significantly lower in patients with a history of hospitalization for mania (bipolar) as compared to patients with no history of mania (unipolar), and to a smaller group with histories of recurrent depression interspersed with periods of increased activity or euphoria, but who never experienced clear-cut mania (unclassified). This finding was demonstrated in male and female patients. Severity of depression as measured by a global depression rating scale and subscales for anxiety and psychosis was not different for the various patient groups, although our clinical impression has been that depressed bipolar patients tend to be "retarded" whereas unipolar patients may be either "agitated" or "retarded." Data from this study suggest biological differences in patients classified according to a unipolar-bipolar format.
Warming Increased Metabolite Composition and Pathways in Root Exudates of Chinese Fir Saplings in Subtropical China

Abstract:Despite the important role of root exudates in the functions and processes of forest ecosystems, few studies have examined the effects of warming on the chemical composition of root exudates. In this study, we examined how warming affected composition of fine root exudates of Chinese fir ( Cunninghamia lanceolata ) saplings in different seasons. We designed a complete randomized block design soil warming (+ 4 °C) experiment. Through liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/MS) in combination with a modified culture-based cuvette system, we compared metabolite composition of root exudates between warmed and control saplings. Warming changed the concentration of more metabolites in the summer than the spring. More primary metabolites (e.g., amino acids and organic acids) and defense-related secondary metabolites (e.g., phenols and terpenoids) significantly increased after warming in summer than in spring. Warming enhanced multiple metabolite pathways related to absorption of nutrients (e.g., alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism for N and citrate cycle for P) and water (e.g., arginine biosynthesis) and plant defense (e.g., enhanced tryptophan metabolism in the spring, flavone, and flavonol biosynthesis in the summer). Warming increased the composition and pathways of metabolites in root exudates of Chinese fir saplings. The alternation was much more pronounced in the dry summer suggesting that changes in metabolite composition and pathways are important responses of Chinese fir saplings to drought. These findings provide insights into how climate change may affect important belowground processes in subtropical forests.

[Effects of warming on physicochemical property of Cunninghamia lanceolata branch and leaf litter in subtropical plantation]

Abstract:At the regional scale, substrate properties are the key factors driving litter decomposition rate. In this study, soil temperature was increased by buried heating cables to explore the impacts of climate warming on the physical and chemical properties in branch and leaf of Cunninghamia lanceolata litter. The results showed that after 5 years of soil warming (4 ℃), the contents of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and water-soluble substance in branch litter increased by 35.2%, 40.8% and 7.6%, while that in leaf litter increased by 41.2%, 45.9% and 5.9%, respectively. The contents of carbon (C), cellulose and C/N in branch litter decreased by 5.1%, 11.6% and 28.8%, and in leaf litter decreased by 5.3%, 11.3% and 33.3%, respectively. Soil warming led to 29.8% increase in specific leaf area (SLA) and 40.7% decrease in tensile strength (LTS) of leaf litter. However, warming did not affect lignin content and pH value in both branch and leaf litter. 13C NMR and infrared spectrum analysis showed that the contents of amino acids, polysaccharides, polyphenols and aliphatic compounds in litter changed significantly after warming. Warming effect differed between litter organs, in that polysaccharides increased significantly only in leaf litter and the increase of amino acids in branch litter was greater than that in leaf litter. Overall, soil warming significantly changed the physical and chemical properties in C. lanceolata branch and leaf litter, which might accelerate the decomposition rate at the initial stage due to the increase of N, P contents and the decrease of LTS, but might decelerate the decomposition rate at the later stage due to an increase of complex polymers content in the litter.
Drought stress introduces growth, physiological traits and ecological stoichiometry changes in two contrasting Cunninghamia lanceolata cultivars planted in continuous-plantation soils

Abstract:Background: The decrease in Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) production on continuously planted soil is an essential problem. In this study, two-year-old seedlings of two cultivars (a normal cultivar, NC, and a super cultivar, SC) were grown in two types of soil (not planted (NP) soil; continuously planted (CP) soil) with three watering regimes, and the interactive effects on plant growth and physiological traits were investigated in a greenhouse experiment. The water contents of the soil in the control (CK) (normal water content), medium water content (MWC) and low water content (LWC) treatments reached 75-80 %, 45-50 % and 20-25 % of the field water capacity, respectively. Results: The results indicated that the CP soil had a negative effect on growth and physiological traits and that the LWC treatment caused even more severe and comprehensive negative effects. In both cultivars, the CP soil significantly decreased the height increment (HI), basal diameter increment (DI), dry matter accumulation (DMA), net photosynthetic rate (Pn), total chlorophyll content (TChl), carotenoid content (Caro) and photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE). Compared to the NP soil, the CP soil also decreased the proline and soluble protein contents, nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and phosphorus use efficiency (PUE) and increased the nitrogen:phosphorus ratio in roots, stems and leaves. The LWC treatment decreased growth and photosynthesis, changed ecological stoichiometry, induced oxidative stress, promoted water use efficiency and damaged chloroplast ultrastructure. Significant increases in ascorbate peroxidase (APX), peroxidase (POD), soluble protein and proline contents were found in the LWC treatment. Compared with the NC, the SC was more tolerant to the CP soil and water stress, as indicated by the higher levels of DMA, Pn, and WUE. After exposure to the CP soil and watering regimes, the decreases in biomass accumulation and gas exchange were more pronounced. Conclusions: The combination of drought and CP soil may have detrimental effects on C. lanceolata growth, and low water content enhances the impacts of CP soil stress on C. lanceolata seedlings. The superiority of the SC over the NC is significant in Chinese fir plantation soil. Therefore, continuously planted soil can be utilized to cultivate improved varieties of C. lanceolata and maintain water capacity. This can improve their growth and physiological performance to a certain extent.
Spring Phenophases of Larch Are More Sensitive to Spring Warming Than to Year-Round Warming: Results of a Seasonally Asymmetric Warming Experiment

Abstract:Plant phenology is a highly sensitive indicator of climate change. The advancement in time of spring phenology due to climate warming is well documented. However, although the progressive warming process is asymmetrical across seasons in temperate and boreal regions, the consistency of spring phenological response to non uniform seasonal warming has not been well studied. Furthermore, the different responses of budburst and leaf unfolding to seasonally uneven warming have not been fully explored. We investigated the responses of budburst and leaf unfolding in two-year-old larch (Larix principis-rupprechtii) seedlings to seasonally asymmetric warming treatments (with passive warming applied in open-top chambers) in northern China. We found that spring warming significantly advanced budburst and leaf unfolding by 7 and 2 days, respectively; year-round warming advanced budburst by 4 days but had no impact on the timing of leaf unfolding. Summer and winter warming had no effects on the timing and duration of spring phenophases. Notably, spring leaf unfolding was significantly delayed, by 2 days, following an autumnal warming, i.e., there was a carry-over effect (a 1-day delay in leaf senescence delayed leaf unfolding by 0.3 day in the next spring). The temperature sensitivities of budburst and leaf unfolding in the spring warming treatment (9.56 days/degrees C and 2.66 days/degrees C, respectively) were significantly greater than those in the year-round warming treatment (6.43 days/degrees C and 0.66 days/degrees C, respectively). We also found a trade-off relationship between the durations of budburst and leaf unfolding in the spring and year-round warming treatments. Our demonstration of (i) differences in the magnitude of responses between budburst and leaf unfolding, and (ii) the carry-over effect under non-uniform seasonal warming, should be incorporated into modeling simulations of spring phenological responses to future warming scenarios. Overall, our findings would have some critical implications for resistance and performance (e.g., frost damage risk and carbon uptake) in the seedling stage of plantation establishment under ongoing climate warming scenarios.
Effects of warming on soil inorganic nitrogen in the young and mature Cunninghamia lanceolata plantations in humid subtropical region, China

Abstract:Soil nitrogen cycling in forests may be accelerated or inhibited by global warming, with consequences on forest productivity. Such an impact will be more complicated with extending period of warming. We examined the effects of warming on soil inorganic nitrogen content in the young and mature plantations. Warming was simulated by means of soil cable warming, simulating a future climate change scenario of 4 ℃ warming. The results showed that after three years warming, both total soil inorganic nitrogen and ammonium contents in the young and mature plantations were significantly reduced. The sharp decline occurred in the young plantation, with soil ammonium content in 0-10, 10-20, 20-40, 40-60 cm soil layers decreased by 32.1%, 37.1%, 20.8% and 19.9%, respectively. Dissolved organic nitrogen was reduced and NO emission was accelerated in the both plantations. The main reasons for the reduction of soil inorganic nitrogen concentration were lower input of organic nitrogen substrate and higher gaseous nitrogen loss. The decrease in soil organic nitrogen substrate and increase in gaseous nitrogen emissions in the young plantation were larger than those in the mature plantation, indicating that soils in the young plantation were more sensitive to increasing temperature. The 3-year warming decreased soil inorganic nitrogen contents in the two plantations, which might negatively affect productivity of the plantations in subtropic China.

Abstract:Climate warming influences the structure and function of ecosystems. However, the mechanisms of plant water use and gas exchange responses to climate warming have been less studied, especially from the perspective of different functional traits. We conducted a field experiment to investigate how soil warming (+2 °C) affects sap flow and stomatal gas exchange through plant functional traits and nutrient characteristics in a subtropical forest. We measured stomatal gas exchange of trees (Acacia auriculiformis and Schima superba) and shrubs (Castanea henryi and Psychotria asiatica), and monitored long-term sap flow of both tree species. Besides, plant leaf nutrient contents, functional traits, and soil nutrients were also studied. It is demonstrated that soil warming significantly increased maximum sap flow density (Js_max, 35.1 %) and whole-tree transpiration (EL, 46.0 %) of A. auriculiformis, but decreased those of S. superba (15.6 % and 14.9 %, respectively). Warming increased the photosynthetic rate of P. asiatica (18.0 %) and water use efficiency of S. superba (47.2 %). Leaf nutrients and stomatal anatomical characteristics of shrubs were less affected by soil warming. Soil warming increased (+42.7 %) leaf K content of A. auriculiformis in dry season. Decomposition of soil total carbon, total nitrogen, and available nitrogen was accelerated under soil warming, and soil exchangeable Ca2+ and Mg2+ were decreased. Trees changed stomatal and anatomic traits to adapt to soil warming, while shrubs altered leaf water content and specific leaf area under soil warming. Warming had a greater effect on sap flow of trees, as well as on their leaf gas exchange (total effect: -0.27) than on that of shrubs (total effect: 0.06). In summary, our results suggest that the combination of functional and nutrient traits can help to better understand plant water use and gas exchange responses under climate warming.

Abstract:The climate warming can increase the productivity of some species while decrease that of others, therefore, knowledge of species-specific responses to warming is helpful to understand the possible trajectory of forest ecosystems. Despite the importance of the subtropical secondary broadleaf forests developed from afforestation in South China, our understanding of how the transpiration of trees and shrubs co-growing in these forests responds to soil warming is limited. To explore the effects of soil warming on transpiration and associated ecophysiological traits of trees and shrubs in wet and dry seasons, as well as to clarify respective contributions of trees and shrubs transpiration to the stand total, we conducted a manipulative experiment of soil warming (+2 °C, WA) and control (CK) in a subtropical secondary broadleaf forest in South China, and continuously monitored the transpiration (based on sap flow) of trees, Schima superba and Acacia auriculiformis , and that (derived from leaf temperature and microclimate) of shrubs, Psychotria asiatica and Castanopsis chinensis , from 2021 to 2022. We also measured leaf water potentials, leaf nutrient status, and δ 13 C-derived intrinsic water use efficiency ( WUE i ). Soil warming did not significantly alter the transpiration of trees, with the exception of A . auriculiformis in 2022, whereas it notably increased transpiration of both shrubs. We attributed the stimulation of shrubs' transpiration mainly to the more favorable leaf water potentials under warming condition. Due to the increased transpiration, the contribution of shrubs to stand transpiration was consequently increased, highlighting the potential role of shrubs in the hydrological dynamics of forest ecosystems. Additionally, the WUE i , soil main macro-nutrients, and leaf nutritional status of all species were not significantly affected by soil warming. These findings indicated that the carbon-water exchange and nutrient status of the studied plants can be maintained even when exposed to moderate increases in soil temperature and relatively drier condition, reflecting the resilience of the subtropical secondary broadleaf forest to possible climate warming. Further research on the interaction and competition of co-existing trees and shrubs under soil warming will improve the prediction of forest dynamics under future climate change, which benefits the efforts to conserve such forests in order to address the environmental pressure in the region.

Abstract:The mechanisms by which warming affects fine root lifespan remain unclear. In a large-scale soil warming experiment in a Chinese fir plantation, fine root dynamics were monitored for four years using minirhizotrons, and the effects of increasing temperature and co-varying factors on fine root lifespan, such as soil moisture, fine root phenology and architecture, were analysed. Fine root non-structural carbohydrate concentrations and respiration rates were measured to test if fine root lifespan is affected by carbon (C) supply. Warming shortened the overall fine root lifespan by 27.6% (warming vs. control: 197.0 ± 3.5 d vs. 272.0 ± 4.5 d). Cox regression models suggest that increased soil temperature directly and negatively affects root lifespan, whereas decreased soil moisture prolongs root lifespan. Fine roots grew thinner and deeper in warm soil and showed higher emergence in winter but lower emergence in summer; all factors affected the fine root lifespan in an integrated manner. Glucose addition stimulated fine root respiration only in warm soil, indicating a depletion of readily available carbohydrates under warming. Overall, our findings suggest that warming could accelerate the input of C by roots into soil due to shortened fine root lifespans, highlighting the important consideration of simultaneously increasing temperature and its co-varying factors to predict root lifespan under climate change.

Abstract:Lammas growth of trees means the additional growth of the shoot after the growth cessation and bud set in late summer. In temperate tree species, lammas growth occurs irregularly and is often regarded as abnormal, disturbed growth. In subtropical tree species, however, lammas growth is a prevalent phenomenon, possibly due to the prolonged occurrence of high temperatures in the autumn. The occurrence of lammas growth extends the growing season of trees, but its influence on subsequent dormancy phenomena and bud burst phenology remains largely unexplored. By comparing seedlings showing lammas growth with others not showing it, we carried out an experimental study of how lammas growth affects the bud burst phenology and the underlying dormancy phenomena under both ambient and controlled chilling, forcing and warming conditions in four subtropical tree species: Carya illinoinensis, Cinnamomum japonicum, Phoebe chekiangensis and Torreya grandis. With the exception of C. illinoinensis, lammas growth delayed bud burst in all the species under ambient conditions. In the chilling experiment, the delayed bud burst appeared to be due to higher minimum forcing requirement, higher dormancy depth, and in T. grandis, also due to lower chilling sensitivity in the lammas-growth seedlings than in the non-lammas-growth ones. However, a spring warming experiment showed that the sensitivity of bud burst to spring temperatures was higher in the lammas-growth seedlings than in the non-lammas-growth ones. Because of this, the difference between the two phenotypes in the timing of bud burst vanished with increasing warming. Our findings elucidate the significant impact of lammas growth on the dormancy dynamics of subtropical tree species, highlighting the necessity to better understand how the physiological phenomena causing lammas growth change the trees' subsequent environmental responses under changing climatic conditions.

Abstract:Exploring the response of leaf anatomical structure to climate warming is helpful for understanding the adaptive mechanisms of trees to climate change. We conducted a warming experiment by transplanting seedlings of Larix gmelinii from 11 provenances to two common gardens, and examined the response of leaf anatomical structure to climate warming. The results showed that warming significantly increased leaf thickness (TL), upper epidermal mesophyll thickness (TUEM), lower epidermal mesophyll thickness (TLEM), endodermal thickness (TE), vascular bundle diameter (DVB), transfer tissue thickness (TTT), and the percentage of mesophyll thickness to TL(PMT), and significantly decreased the upper epidermal thickness (TUE) and the percentage of epidermal thickness to TL (PE). The mesophyll thickness was positively associated with chlorophyll concentration and maximum net photosynthetic rate. The responses of TL, TUEM, TLEM, TE, DVB, TTT, TUE, PMT and PE to warming differed among all the provenances.As the aridity index of the original site increased, the magnitude of the warming treatment's effect decreased for TL, TUEM, TLEM, TTT and PMT, and increased for TUE and PE. Warming increased the thickness and proportion of profit tissue (e.g., mesophyll) and decreased the thickness and proportion of defensive tissue (e.g., epidermis), and those changes varied among provenances. L. gmelinii could adapt to climate warming by adjusting leaf anatomical structure, and this ability was weak for trees from provenance with high aridity index.

Abstract:A deep understanding of the responses of photosynthesis to air temperature (Ta) is essential for accurately assessing carbon budgets. Photosynthetic light response (PLR) parameters, including apparent quantum yield (α), maximum photosynthesis rate (Pmax) and daytime ecosystem respiration (Rd), are widely used to describe and quantify photosynthesis at the ecosystem scale. However, an understanding of the specific responses of PLR parameters to temperature in different seasons is still lacking. Therefore, this study aimed to address this issue based on 17-year continuous eddy covariance measurements (2003–2019) in a subtropical coniferous plantation. The responses of PLR parameters to air temperature (Ta) were obtained by classifying the observed net ecosystem exchange (NEE) and the corresponding photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) according to Ta with a class width of 2 °C. The general regulations showed that α, Rd and Pmax first increased with Ta until the optimal Ta and then decreased. The optimal Ta for α, Rd and Pmax were 28, 30 and 32 °C, and the inflection points were consistent with the soil water content (SWC) at depths of 5, 20, and 50 cm, respectively. For the specific seasonal responses, the optimal Ta for α and Rd was highest in summer, with a value as high as 30 °C, and the optimal Ta was highest in autumn, with a value of 32 °C. Interestingly, although the temperature environments were similar in spring and autumn, the optimal Ta for α was 2 °C higher in spring than in autumn, but the optimal Ta for Pmax was 6 °C higher in autumn than in spring. Some special response patterns were also found according to delicate studies on a seasonal scale, which were found to be related to SWCs at different depths. These findings reflected the inner function changes of the ecosystem and the potential effects of SWC, which should be given special attention when the PLR parameters are used in models to predict the carbon budgets in the future.
