Abstract:The stability of surrounding rock is closely connected with the settlement of the crown during construction of shallow-buried road tunnel in gravel strata.Therefore,simulation analysis of different construction methods was used to get the settlement law of the crown to optimize the project as a goal controlling settlement of the crown and stability of surrounding rock.At the same time,the better method of construction was put forward to analyze different excavation path and stage length.The result showed that the crown settlement easily took place during excavation of shallow tunnel and with different construction methods,the difference of crown settlement was great.It is found that CRD method is the most appropriate for gravel strata tunnel because the crown settlement is lest and the stress releasing is slow and gradual and the stress transfer is more effective than CD method.Compared with site monitoring,the result is more identical.The conclusion can provide the reference for similar engineering.

Abstract:For fine grained soil with low permeability and high plasticity, the conventional drainage consolidation methods work inefficiently in foundation reinforcement.Electro-osmosis method has advantage of short duration and easy installation.Relevant research is emerging and some has realized primary engineering application.Researches on foundation reinforcement by electro-osmosis method were summarized to further understand the electro-osmosis reinforcement mechanism and provide references for project design.This review mainly includes the relation between soil properties and electro-osmosis reinforcement mechanism, the effect of test methods and control factors on electro-osmosis, the electro-osmosis method combined with other treatment methods.Problems occurred in researches are as follows: how to determine the practice code and guideline of control factors, how to consider electro-osmosis mechanism before experiment design, how to enhance single-factor tests, etc.In addition, the research directions for future are suggested, such as to develop new testing technology, to improve computing method and electro-osmosis treatment of advanced materials.

Abstract:Concrete-faced rockfilll dams have been rapidly developed. Dam construction using soft-rock is a new problem of CFRD. Soft-rock covers over 50% of earth-surface rock, so the research on the technique of soft-rock placement has extensive prospect and great economic benefit. Based on the practices of three real projects——Yutiao, Da'ao and Qiezishan, the paper introduces their field compaction experimentation, the comprehensive analysis of the results, and the measures to improve the placement quality and to reduce the crusting of cracked soft-rocks. All of the experiences obtained from the research may be of greatly beneficial reference for the similar projects since then.
Optimal sand transport roadbed geometry structure of Taklamakan Desert highway

Abstract:In order to obtain the optimal geometric structure for sand transport in desert roads, this study fully utilizes the natural sand transport capacity of the desert roads, aiming to reduce occurrences of road damage due to sand burial. The research integrates Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) with optimization analysis theory. Various typical geometric structures of desert highway roadbed were modeled using the Design Exploration module in CFD. Optimization analysis methods were employed to model and compute the sediment transport optimization design on both the roadbed and road surface. Then, the initial sample points are obtained by using the Design of Experiments (DOE), and the response surface is established by using the Kriging model to obtain the change trend of the input parameters and the objective function. Finally, the cross-section parameters of the sediment transport subgrade corresponding to different inflow conditions are obtained. The results show that the sediment transport performance of embankment, cutting and semi-filled uphill subgrade is negatively correlated with the height of subgrade. The relationship between slope gradient and sediment transport performance of subgrade depends on the height of subgrade and the type of subgrade section. For embankment and cutting, when the subgrade height is less than 0.5 m, the sediment transport performance of the subgrade is positively correlated with the subgrade slope; however, when the subgrade height exceeds 0.5 m, the sediment transport performance is negatively correlated with the subgrade slope. For the semi-filled uphill flow subgrade, the sediment transport performance of the subgrade is negatively correlated with the subgrade slope. Comprehensive analysis shows that semi-filled and excavated downhill subgrade has the best sand transport performance, embankment subgrade has the second highest sand transport capacity, then cutting subgrades, while semi-filled and excavated uphill subgrade has the worst sand transport performance. The research conclusions provide valuable scientific guidance for the design of sand control embankment structures tailored to local conditions for desert highways. This is of significant importance for enhancing the sediment transport capacity of desert highways and prolonging their service life.

Abstract:Constructing highways in deserts is expensive due to the difficulty of acquiring materials; utilizing aeolian sand effectively has become a problem, especially in the Xinjiang region, where the desert widely occurs. This paper aims to investigate the vibration response of a geocell-reinforced aeolian sand subgrade under traffic loading based on field tests of highways in deserts. The vibration acceleration response of geocell-reinforced aeolian sand and gravelly soil upper roadbed structures is tested. The field test results illustrate the effects of dynamic loading on geocell-reinforced aeolian sand roadbeds, and the thickness substitution ratio between geocell-reinforced aeolian sand roadbeds and conventional gravelly soil roadbeds is determined and verified based on the vibration acceleration monitoring values. The results show that the vibration response induced by the test vehicle is concentrated within the 30 Hz frequency band, and the higher the vibration frequency, the faster the vertical decay in the road. The vibration damping capacity of the reinforced aeolian sand roadbed is better than that of the gravelly soil roadbed; when replacing the gravelly soil roadbed with the reinforced aeolian sand roadbed, the substitution ratio is 0.31–0.42. It is verified that half thickness of gravel soil on roadbeds can be replaced by geocell-reinforced aeolian sand under different working conditions. The results of this study can provide reference data for the design of highway subgrades in deserts.

Abstract:High-liquid-limit soils have been used in road pavements in many countries despite the fact that sometimes they do not comply with local specification requirements in order to reduce the economic loss. Through laboratory tests, the physical and mechanical properties as a paving material, of a high-liquid-limit soil from south-east China were studied. The relationship between compaction effort and compaction degree at various water contents was investigated. The influence of water content, compaction degree and swelling potential grade on California bearing ratio (CBR) strength was analysed. It is found that CBR value depends on water content, compaction degree and the structural state after soaking expansion. It is concluded that high-liquid-limit soil can be used as direct filling material by reducing the standard compaction energy and increasing the water content higher than the optimum water content.

Abstract:A grassland carbon sink is a grassland planting activity with special requirements to implement carbon sink measurement and monitoring of the growth process of forage grasses on the land where the baseline has been determined, with the main purpose of increasing carbon sink. The development of grassland carbon sink is extremely beneficial to achieve the two important deployments of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. Grasslands with one-fourth area in the south are limited by the rugged topography of the karst landscape and thin soil layer, and the efficiency of pasture planting is low. For the above problems, our team proposes a design around mountain pasture cultivation to reduce carbon emissions and apply it to increase carbon sinks in grasslands of stone desertification areas. The design can provide a concrete solution for restoring the ecological environment and enhancing the carbon sink capacity of grassland in stone desertification areas, and also provide a technical guarantee for local herders to increase their income and productivity. This work has the advantages of high market potential, low cost, composite multi-functional automatic operation, and high planting efficiency with a small size, which has good promotion value. It effectively reduces carbon emissions while improving vegetation cover and establishes a new model of combining green restoration and agricultural production in mountainous areas.

Abstract:The construction of lunar bases is of great significance for long-term human presence on the moon. The environmental and resource conditions regarding lunar base construction were reviewed and researched. It was demonstrated that the in-situ construction using lunar regolith was a practical and feasible construction scheme considering its various advantages including construction convenience and cost efficiency. The existing studies on construction technology based on lunar regolith could be categorized into two groups: downward excavation and upward construction. In particular, the upward construction employed the different techniques including lunar regolith concrete, lunar regolith sintering, lunar regolith bonding and regolith bags. Based on the review and analysis, a novel lunar in-situ construction scheme was proposed, which comprehensively used the techniques including 3D printed lunar regolith concrete and regolith bags, so as to realize the automatic construction using in-situ resources. It provided a new technical path for lunar base construction.

Abstract:Low-volume roads in rural areas constitute the majority of China's road network. Such roads have important social and economic functions; however, the budget available for their construction and maintenance is insufficient. Therefore, there is a need to explore design and construction methods for durable and low-cost low-volume roads. In this study, the experiences of design, construction, and performance evaluation of a low-volume road (LVR) constructed in a mountainous area in southwest China are introduced. A small-sized slab with size of 2.0 m x 2.0 m or less that bears wheel load instead of axle load is found appropriate for application to low-volume roads. The thickness of the small-sized slab ranges from 10 cm to 20 cm, which is related to the slab size. This type of slab broadens the application of concrete pavements to low-cost and durable low-volume roads. It is expected that the results of this study will serve as a demonstration for the design and construction of low-volume roads.

Abstract:Soft soil subgrade is a special form in highway construction. The stability and operability of soft soil subgrade are poor, which is easy to affect the road construction quality and the whole road structure. In order to effectively improve the comprehensive performance of soft soil subgrade, effective treatment methods must be adopted. At present, highway construction technology is becoming more and more mature in the process of soft soil treatment, in which there are different treatment processes, each with its advantages and disadvantages. Based on this, this paper makes an extensive analysis on some soft foundation treatment technologies in highway construction, which has certain guiding significance for the construction of similar projects. Starting from the main influence of soft soil foundation, this paper focuses on the treatment technology of soft soil foundation, and puts forward the key points of construction engineering, in order to provide reference for similar road construction projects.

Abstract:The process and contents of frozen soil research along Qinghai-Xizang highway are systemically reviewed and an emphasis is put to describe the study results in 1990s. The recent studies were conducted on engineering geology of frozen soil, ground temperature under the roadbed, the influence of frozen soil environment, engineering classification of frozen soil, and geographical information system. All the results of frozen soil obtained along Qinghai-Xizang Highway from 1993 to 2000 , can provide the scientific basis for solving important engineering-technological problems of frozen soil and for engineering design of the Qinghai-Xizang Railway.

Abstract:The TRIZ theory was used to accurately discover the problems to be solved in the design of roadway surrounding rock control technology. This paper tried to solve the complex issue of surrounding rock control in deep roadways from a new perspective. Based on the functional component analysis and causal axis analysis of the problem's primary reason, simultaneously, the surrounding rock control technology was optimized through technical contradiction analysis, physical contradiction analysis, and substance and field model analysis. As a result, a fully enclosed wire-shell support technology was proposed. Finally, taking the typical soft rock roadway engineering of Pansan Coal Mine in Huainan Mining Area, Anhui Province, China, as the engineering background, the engineering application and effect evaluation were completed. This paper provides a reference for controlling the instability of deep soft rock roadways in coal mines. A new idea of optimizing roadway support engineering based on TRIZ theory was proposed.

Research progress on vegetation restoration of road slopes in China

Abstract:China is the largest country in road construction due to rapid economy growth, which results in a large number of exposed slopes. Vegetation restoration of these road slopes has become the dominant method in ecological restoration. We reviewed research progress from three aspects, including key technologies for road slope vegetation restoration, application of vegetation restoration engineering, and factors influencing the vegetation restoration efforts. The slope protection technologies commonly used in road slope vegetation restoration include soil spraying technology, vegetation concrete slope protection technology, thick base material technology, and hydraulic spraying technology. In engineering applications, slope vegetation has the functions such as soil and water conservation, air purification, and landscape restoration. Currently, the most common community configuration is shrub and grass configuration. The main influencing factors of vegetation restoration on road slopes are climate, soil substrate, slope direction, plant species and community configuration used, human factors, and other natural factors (such as hydrology, altitude, microtopography, and wildlife). Future researches should focus on the mechanisms of different factors affecting road slope vegetation restoration, and study ecological substrates and slope protection technologies, plant species and diverse community configuration models suitable for road slope restoration in different climatic regions and site conditions.
