Abstract:To improve treatments of bone or dental trauma and diseases such as osteoporosis, cancer, and infections, scientists who perform basic research are collaborating with clinicians to design and test new biomaterials for the regeneration of lost or injured tissue. Developed some 40 years ago, bioactive glass (BG) has recently become one of the most promising biomaterials, a consequence of discoveries that its unusual properties elicit specific biological responses inside the body. Among these important properties are the capability of BG to form strong interfaces with both hard and soft tissues, and its release of ions upon dissolution. Recent developments in nanotechnology have introduced opportunities for materials sciences to advance dental and bone therapies. For example, the applications for BG expand as it becomes possible to finely control structures and physicochemical properties of materials at the molecular level. Here, we review how the properties of these materials have been enhanced by the advent of nanotechnology, and how these developments are producing promising results in hard-tissue regeneration and development of innovative BG-based drug delivery systems.

Abstract:There has been enormous research on diagnostic and therapeutic dental methods due to the growing recognition of oral wellness. Numerous studies in this area have resulted in dental biomaterials, including polymers, metals, and acrylic resins, essential to restore teeth affected by illnesses or accidents. Compared to other biomaterials, such as metals or polymers, ceramics offer distinct features. Materials like zirconia and alumina demonstrate their high intrinsic strength, making them appropriate for biomedical applications like dental implants or artificial joints. Additionally, they have outstanding biocompatibility, which lowers the possibility of adverse effects or inflammation. Some ceramics, like hydroxyapatite (HA) and bioactive glasses, even encourage tissue integration and regeneration. Moreover, because of their adaptability, they can be precisely shaped and composed to emphasize specific characteristics. Yttria‐stabilized tetragonal zirconia offers outstanding mechanical properties and biocompatibility but faces concerns over long‐term durability due to low‐temperature degradation. To address this, researchers have developed non‐oxidic ceramics like silicon nitride and advanced oxide‐based materials like alumina‐zirconia composites, aiming to enhance the durability and reliability of biomedical applications. In this review, we highlighted the recent advancements in ceramic dental implants; examples and applications of different ceramics‐based materials, including zirconia, alumina, HA, and beta calcium phosphate, are provided in detail.

Abstract:Bioceramics have been widely utilized for orthopaedic applications in which the biocompatibility and mechanical properties of the materials are vital characteristics to be considered for their clinical use. Till date, extensive studies have been devoted to developing a range of scientific ways for tailoring the microstructure of bioceramics in order to attain the trade-off of mechanical properties and biocompatibility of the final product. Owing to low reactivity, earlier stabilization and longer functional life of bioceramic, the developed implants are capable of replicating the mechanical behaviour of original bone. As the safety of the patient and its ultimate functionality are the ultimate goal of the selected implant material hence, the present literature survey investigates and brings forth the important aspects associated to the mechanical, biological and microstructural characteristics of bioceramics employed in orthopaedic applications. The review paper majorly focuses on effective utilization of various materials as an additive in bioceramics and processing techniques used for enhancement of properties, enabling the use of material in orthopaedic applications. The influence of various additives on the microstructure, mechanical properties and biological performance of developed bioceramics orthopaedic implants has been elaborately discussed. Furthermore, future prospects are proposed to promote further innovations in bioceramics research.

Abstract:Advancements in bio-ceramic technology has revolutionised endodontic material science by enhancing the treatment outcome for patients. This class of dental materials conciliates excellent biocompatibility with high osseoconductivity that render them ideal for endodontic care. Few recently introduced bio-ceramic materials have shown considerable clinical success over their early generations in terms of good handling characteristics. Calcium enriched mixture (CEM) cement, Endosequence sealer, and root repair materials, Biodentine and BioAggregate are the new classes of bio-ceramic materials. The aim of this literature review is to present investigations regarding properties and applications of CEM cement in endodontics. A review of the existing literature was performed by using electronic and hand searching methods for CEM cement from January 2006 to December 2013. CEM cement has a different chemical composition from that of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) but has similar clinical applications. It combines the biocompatibility of MTA with more efficient characteristics, such as significantly shorter setting time, good handling characteristics, no staining of tooth and effective seal against bacterial leakage.

Abstract:In the modern days, the advancement in the biomedical research field focusing on the use of bioceramics for treatments of different diseases, vital organ functioning, and tissue engineering technology has given new hope in regenerative medicine. Various methodologies are explored for the synthesis of bioceramic materials using natural as well as synthetic. There are various challenges to make cost-effective material synthesis and to minimize the rejection of bioceramics in biological systems. To improve the acceptance and reduce the rejection by human beings and other living organisms by looking into their immune responses is one of the biggest challenges for any foreign material into the body system. To develop biocompatible ceramic material the mechanical and chemical properties of the ceramic materials are one of the important parameters for acceptance by human beings. The evaluation criteria for the mechanical, chemical, and biological properties of bioceramics using various existing approaches are playing very significant role to validate the use of bioceramics. The more cutting edge technologies for synthesis, evaluation of bioceramic properties can enhance the biomedical applications.

Abstract:Dental implantology has witnessed remarkable advancements in recent years, and zirconia has emerged as a prominent biomaterial for dental implant applications. This review explores the multifaceted aspects of zirconia, focusing on its properties, processing methods, biocompatibility, mechanical performance, and clinical applications. Over the past few decades, the most popular choice of material for dental implantology has been titanium which has been found to have the highest success rate of implant treatment. However, recently, it has been observed that zirconia might replace titanium and eventually emerge as one of the gold-standard materials of dental implants. Analysis of biomechanical sciences and biomaterial sciences provides an opportunity for the refinement of design and material notions for surgical implants. However, the most important aspect and prime concern is how tissue at the implant site responds to biomechanical disturbances caused by foreign materials. The literature revealed that zirconia has certain characteristics that make it an excellent material for implants, including biocompatibility and osseointegration which depicts positive soft tissue response with low plaque affinity as well as aesthetics owing to light transmission and color. Additionally, this review discusses the current challenges and prospects of zirconia in dental implantology as well as aims to provide dental professionals and researchers with a comprehensive understanding of zirconia's potential as a biomaterial in dental implantology. The present overview of available literature intends to highlight and explore the biological characteristics of zirconia for applications in dental implantology. However, research is urgently required to fill in gaps over time for clinical assessments of all zirconia implants, consequently, the implementation of hybrid systems (a titanium screw with a zirconia collar) has recently been suggested.

Abstract:Bioceramics,because of their advantages of biocompatibility,osteoconduction,and biological affinity,it has become a potential useful material for biological scleroses tissues in terms of orthopedics,plastic surgery,dental surgery,oral surgery,cardiovascular surgery,ophthalmic surgery,otorhinolaryngology and general surgery.In this article,we introduce the classification,biological feature and practical applications of bioceramics on medicine,and prospect the development of bioceramics in the coming 10 years.According to the action mechanism of the materials with tissues,bioceramics can be divided into active bioceramics and inactive bioceramics.Active bioceramics mainly recommend hydroxyapatite ceramic.Its applications in hard tissue engineering,including blending lecithin or growing factors or cells to improve biological activity are reviewed.Moreover the characteristics and applications of bioactive glass and tricalcium phosphate are illustrated.On inactive bioceramics the biological characteristics and advantages of aluminum oxide ceramics and zirconium oxide ceramics are introduced.

Abstract:Zirconia was established as one of the chief vital ceramic materials for its superior mechanical permanency and biocompatibility, which make it a popular material for dental and orthopedic applications. This has inspired biomedical engineers to exploit zirconia-based bioceramics for dental restorations and repair of load-bearing bone defects caused by cancer, arthritis, and trauma. Additive manufacturing (AM) is being promoted as a possible technique for mimicking the complex architecture of human tissues, and advancements reported in the recent past make it a suitable choice for clinical applications. AM is a bottom-up approach that can offer a high resolution to 3D printed zirconia-based bioceramics for implants, prostheses, and scaffold manufacturing. Substantial research has been initiated worldwide on a large scale for reformatting and optimizing zirconia bioceramics for biomedical applications to maximize the clinical potential of AM. This book chapter provides a comprehensive summary of zirconia-based bioceramics using AM techniques for biomedical applications and highlights the challenges related to AM of zirconia.

Abstract:Past two decades, the significant development of biomaterials for engineering calcified tissues and regeneration of soft and hard tissues has been observed. An increase in elder population with age-related ailments and disease motivates the need for novel biomaterials that could replace damaged tissues, promote the body’s regeneration potential, and lead to an effective calcification in the hard tissue. Bioceramics (e.g., calcium phosphates, bioactive glasses, and glass-ceramics) are used to design and fabricate a scaffold of desired structures for the repair/restore/reconstruction/regeneration of diseased parts of the body, have a high potential for mimicking like a structure of the native calcified tissue. More recently, these biomaterials have also revealed promising applications in the field of engineering of calcified tissues. This chapter explores an overview of bioceramics and its fundamental requirements for biomedical applications, a detailed picture of recent developments of bioceramics and composites, including tissue engineering and drug delivery. Future research is also highlighted at the end of this chapter, with the development of tissue engineering scaffolds exploiting nanotechnology.

Abstract:Ceramics are very important in the science of dental biomaterials. Among all dental ceramics, zirconia is in evidence as a dental biomaterial and it is the material of choice in contemporary restorative dentistry. Zirconia has been applied as structural material for dental bridges, crowns, inserts, and implants, mostly because of its biocompatibility, high fracture toughness, and radiopacity. However, the clinical success of restorative dentistry has to consider the adhesion to different substrates, which has offered a great challenge to dental zirconia research and development. This study characterizes zirconia as a dental biomaterial, presenting the current consensus and challenges to its dental applications.

Abstract:Bioceramics have been adopted in dental restorations for implants, bridges, inlays, onlays, and all-ceramic crowns. Dental bioceramics include glass ceramics, reinforced porcelains, zirconias, aluminas, fiber-reinforced ceramic composites, and multilayered ceramic structures. The process of additive manufacturing is ideally suited to dentistry. Models are designed using data from a computed tomography scan or magnetic resonance imaging. Since its development in 2001, direct ceramic machining of presintered yttria tetragonal zirconia polycrystal has become increasingly popular in dentistry. There are wide variety commercially available cements for luting all-ceramic restorations. However, resin cements have lower solubility and better aesthetic characteristics.

Abstract:Biomaterials science and technology have been expanding tremendously the recent years. The results of this evolution are obvious in maxillofacial applications especially with the contemporary development of Nanotechnology. Among biomaterials, bioceramics possess a specific field due to various interactions with the biological tissues. The combination of bioceramics and nanotechnology has resulted in enhanced skeletal interactions in maxillofacial applications. Nanotechnology secures better mechanical properties and more effective biological interactions with jaws. The main production methods for the synthesis of nanostructured materials include plasma arcing, chemical vapour deposition, sol-gel and precipitation. The bioceramics in Dentistry comprise inert, bioactive, resorbable and composite systems. The purpose of the present article is to describe the available nanotechnology methods and how these could be addressed to synthesise maxillofacial bioceramics with advanced properties for better biological applications. Additionally, it describes specific clinical applications in maxillofacial surgery of these biomaterials--either by themselves or in combination with others--that can be promising candidates for bone tissue engineering. Such applications include replacement of lost teeth, filling of jaws defects or reconstruction of mandible and temporomandibular joint.

Abstract:Alumina and zirconia are used as biomaterials since long. The use of alumina, especially, as a dental implant and porous bone substitute was reported in the first half of the 1960s.Both these ceramics exhibit a high chemical inertness, which is the reason for their high biological safety even at the higher specific surfaces. Due to their hardness being higher than the other metal alloys, alumina and zirconia found their main application as biomaterials in the articular surfaces of joint replacements. Today, the use of zirconia ball heads has practically ceased in hip arthroplasty. Zirconia ceramics are used mostly in dentistry, while in orthopedics are still in use in some niche products. In association with alumina, zirconia is used in the ceramic composites that are presently the reference bioinert ceramic for clinical applications. This chapter is an overview of the development of bioinert ceramics, as well as of their physical and mechanical properties. The behavior of the present composite bioinert ceramics is also described in detail, and a review is given of the studies carried out to assess the biological safety of alumina and zirconia. Finally, the flow sheet of a possible production process for the manufacture of bioinert ceramic components is outlined.

Abstract:Bioceramics, with excellent bioactivity and biocompatibility, have been widely used in dentistry, particularly in endodontics. Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) is the most widely used bioceramic in endodontics. Recently, many new bioceramics have been developed, showing good potential for the treatment of endodontic diseases. This paper reviews the characteristics of bioceramics and their applications in various clinical endodontic situations, including root-end filling, root canal therapy, vital pulp therapy, apexification/regenerative endodontic treatment, perforation repair, and root defect repair. Relevant literature published from 1993 to 2023 was searched by keywords in PubMed and Web of Science. Current evidence supports the predictable outcome of MTA in the treatment of endodontic diseases. Although novel bioceramics such as Biodentine, EndoSequence, and calcium-enriched mixtures have shown promising clinical outcomes, more well-controlled clinical trials are still needed to provide high-level evidence for their application in endodontics. In addition, to better tackle the clinical challenges in endodontics, efforts are needed to improve the bioactivity of bioceramics, particularly to enhance their antimicrobial activity and mechanical properties and reduce their setting time and solubility.

Abstract:Bioceramics are widely adopted in the field of skeletal tissue reconstruction, augmentation, and replacement. Apatite-based materials have shown great promise in the latter half of the nineteenth century in this area. Understanding demands on implants and providing a pathway to match it has been a learning experience. Clinicians and technologists have been on this path assiduously to optimize graft properties vis-a-vis biological demand. This is due to their widely acceptable traits of biocompatibility, osteoconduction, and osteointegration. This chapter attempts to track their development over time and track applications of the materials in their maturation from pure graft materials to tissue engineering scaffolds and smart materials.

Abstract:Zirconia, with its excellent mechanical properties, chemical stability, biocompatibility, and negligible thermal conductivity, is ideal for dental and orthopedic applications. In addition, the biocompatibility of zirconia has been studied in vivo , and no adverse reactions were observed when zirconia samples were inserted into bone. However, their use is controversial among dentists and researchers, especially when compared with mature implants made of titanium alloy. The advantages and limitations of zirconia as biomaterials, such as implant materials, need to be carefully studied, and the design, manufacture, and clinical operation guidelines are urgently required. In this review, the special components, microstructure, mechanical strength, biocompatibility, and the application of zirconia ceramics in biomaterials are detailly introduced. The review highlights discussions on how to implement innovative strategies to design the physical and chemical properties of zirconia so that the treated zirconia can provide better osteointegration after implantation.

Abstract:Nanotechnology is emerging as an interdisciplinary field that is undergoing rapid development and has brought about enormous changes in medicine and dentistry. Nanomaterial-based design is able to mimic some of the mechanical and structural properties of native tissue and can promote biointegration. Nanotechnology has various applications in dentistry, including dentition renaturalization, therapy for dentin hypersensitivity, complete orthodontic realignment in a single visit, covalently bonding diamondized enamel, enhancing properties of root canal sealers, and continuous oral health maintenance using mechanical dentifrobots. A range of synthetic nanoparticles such as hydroxyapatite, bioglass, titanium, zirconia, and silver nanoparticles are proposed for dental restoration. This review focuses on the developments in the field of nanomaterials in dentistry in the form of tissue regeneration materials, implantable devices, nanocomposites, endodontic sealers etc. and issues of patient safety.
