Abstract:The paper presents a switching control strategy for the driving current of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), which enlarge the starting torque by adopting trapezoidal drive mode at startup, so that the motor can achieve the same characteristic as brushless direct-current motor (BLDCM) and have more application scenarios. Aiming at the torque ripple problem caused by the change of control parameters in the normal operation and switching process, the paper proposes an adaptive fuzzy control method to ensure the reliability and smoothness. At the same time, the system can obtain better dynamic performance and anti-interference ability. The results show that good operating performance can be guaranteed in the entire operating range.

Abstract:The control strategy of PMSM (permanent magnet synchronous motor) with PCH (Port-Controlled Hamiltonian) theory is proposed in this paper. PCH is a kind of nonlinear control method. Energy-shaping approach is the essence of passivity-based control. With the definition of generalized passive Hamiltonian system, the PCH structure of permanent magnet synchronous motor is given. By using the MTPA (maximum torque per ampere) control theory, the desired equilibrium is obtained. Luenberger observer on PMSM for torque estimation is proposed. The nonlinear controller is designed by the way of energy shaping method. Finally the system's stability is analyzed by simulation. The controller has preferable robustness and fast response performance.
Improved 2-Order Active Disturbance Rejection Control for PMSM

Abstract:Traditional PMSM control system is based on the PID controllers and vector control (VC) technologies. Active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) is a new kind of control strategy which has quicker convergence and more stable response than the PID controller. The basic 2-order ADRC controller in PMSM system fails to use the current feedback and so there are large torque ripples and harmonic current. A improved ADRC controller is designed using the model compensation method where the current feedback is utilized effectively and the torque ripples and harmonic current are decreased obviously. We derive the expressions of the improved ADRC strategy in detail based on the mathematic model of PMSM and basic ADRC controller. Some simulation experiments under the three kind of controller improved ADRC, basic ADRC and traditional PID are performed. The results confirm our algorithm proper and several conclusions are summarized at last.

Abstract:Model predictive control (MPC) is known for its good dynamic performance, but the parameter mismatch issue has long been concerned. In order to help evaluating and improving the control performance of MPC, a comprehensive knowledge of the side-effects of a variety of possible parameter mismatches on different MPC types is highly required. In this paper, three main MPC types, i.e. the continuous-control-set MPC (CCS-MPC), the finite-control-set MPC (FCS-MPC), and the generalized predictive control (GPC), are considered for the permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) drive. Three types of parameter mismatch are considered, i.e. mismatches of the stator resistance, stator inductance, and permanent magnet flux linkage. Their side-effects, including the steady-state control errors and the stability issues, on all the three MPC types are theoretically analyzed and compared. Simulation results are provided to validate the correctness of the comparison study.

Abstract:Model predictive control is an effective control method.However,the heavy computational burden prevents its application in permanent magnet synchronous motor(PMSM) control.To solve the problem an automatic differentiation(AD) based model predictive control(MPC) algorithm for PMSM was proposed in this paper.A PMSM model in dq axis was established by Taylor series expansion using AD.The new model was more accurate than the conventional one obtained from difference or looking up table.MPC was completed by computing the sensitivity of PMSM Taylor series and converting predictive control problem into unconstrained optimization problem.Simulation results verify that the proposed algorithm reduces the computational time significantly.

Abstract:The high power permanent magnet (PM) traction drive has recently been highlighted due to its promising qualities such as high efficiency and power density. For better performance, a robust, efficient and reliable control and driving scheme needs to be designed. In this Paper a control scheme is designed which based on Most Torque Per Ampere (MTPA) strategy to obtain high power density and is specially designed to achieve smooth transition between constant torque mode and constant power (field weakening) mode. In addition, a novel low-frequency pulse width modulation (PWM) scheme is designed to achieve smooth transitions between various fundamental-carrier wave frequency ratios while maintaining the synchronization between stator and rotor flux throughout the entire operation range. The validity of the scheme has been proved by simulation results and experiment is underway.

Abstract:Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) servo drive system has been widely used for industrial sewing machines. The conventional control method is PID, which has some disadvantages such as large overshoot, bad robustness. In this paper, a servo control of the industrial sewing machine system based on the active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) is proposed, which can arrange the transient process, estimate and compensate the uncertain internal and external disturbance. It can highly enhance the dynamic performances of the system. Based on the Matlab/simulink software, the simulation results of the industrial sewing machine control system proved the effectiveness and robustness of the ADRC control strategy.

Abstract:This paper performs two kinds of Field-Oriented Control (FOC) for dual three phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (DTP-PMSM).The first is based on vector space decomposition to study the effect of current harmonics on electromechanical energy conversion.And the second presents the coupling relations between two sets of windings using two d-q transformation.And then this paper has deeply studied the differences between these two strategies, the different effect on the control of harmonic current and the reason for these differences.MATLAB-based Simulation studies of a 3KW DTP-PMSM are carried out to verify the analysis of differences between the two FOC strategies.

Abstract:In electric vehicles, performances of electric vehicle drivetrains depend on the electric machine and the control. Switched Reluctance Machines (SRMs) are today an alternative to rare earth magnets machines such as Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM), which is used in the vehicle drivetrain. Because of its high nonlinear behavior, the classical control designed for SRMs is not sufficient to obtain good performances. The objective of this paper is to make performance and robustness comparisons of the designed robust controllers considering the high nonlinear behavior of SRMs. Sliding Mode Control (SMC) and Super-Twisting Sliding Mode Control (STSMC) are developed and validated by simulation for the velocity control loop and the current control loops of the control strategy. However, an evaluation of their performances compared to classical control based on PI controllers is carried out. For a robustness comparison, a variation of SRM parameters is carried out by simulation using the three controllers. Finally, an experimental validation on a developed test bench using the three controllers is conducted to show that Super-Twisting Sliding Mode Control (STSMC) is the best in terms of performances and robustness for an electric vehicle application.

Comparison of PMSMs with Different Rotor Structures for EV Application

Abstract:For electric vehicles (EVs), permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) are competitive owing to their high power factor, high efficiency and high power density. In this paper, four types of PMSMs with different rotor topologies are designed with the same motor main dimensions and the same amount of permanent magnet usage. First, the different PMSMs are compared in terms of their torque characteristics. The torque characteristic curves of the four motors are displayed with the control method i(d)=0 for surface-mounted PMSM (SPMSM) and Maximum Torque per Ampere (MTPA) for interior PMSM (IPMSM). It turns out that IPMSM has higher starting torque than SPMSM due to the reluctance torque. Among the three IPMSMs with different rotor structures, V-shape IPMSM and delta-shape IPMSM can provide higher output torque under the same current supply with the higher salient rate. More information on the no-load magnetic density, torque ripple, efficiency and demagnetization problem operated at the peak current is also provided and compared. Then the four PMSMs with the same peak current are further analyzed and compared on the flux-weakening speed-enlarge (FWSE) capability. The results show good FWSE capability for all of the four PMSMs owing to the large peak current. However, the torque of SPMSM in flux-weakening control region is slightly higher than the IPMSMs.

Abstract:A permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is applied to drive air-condition compressor in high speed operation for electric vehicle applications. In order to improve the performance, efficiency and reliability of the PMSM-compressor drive, a set of control strategies are developed. A double mode over-modulation method is proposed to enhance the voltage transfer ratio of PWM inverter and the output torque capability of PMSM during high speed operation. A model reference adaptive system (MRAS) method is used to estimate rotor position to realize sensorless drive. A feed-forward compensation strategy with maxim torque per ampere (MTPA) control and flux weakening control is proposed for high speed stable operation of PMSM-compressor drive with low power loss. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of these control strategies.

Abstract:The permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is extensively utilized in electric vehicle air conditioning compressor control systems due to its numerous advantages, including high efficiency, lightweight design, compact size, excellent reliability, and low maintenance costs. In order to achieve PMSM without position sensor full speed range operation, this paper designs an optimized control strategy for full speed range operation. At low and zero speed, the I/F control mode is employed to achieve quick motor startup with minimized repetition rate, avoiding the overcurrent problem that is easy to occur by traditional V/F control, and the control is switched to the Phase-locked Loop (PLL) adaptive sliding mode observer (SMO) for position estimation at medium and high speed, avoiding the problems of high-frequency jitter and low position accuracy of traditional SMO. The feasibility of this strategy is confirmed by the simulation results of Simulink.

Abstract:This paper rigorously addresses the intricate control demands of high-speed, high-pressure, wide adjustable speed range, and high energy utilization efficiency required in hydrogen fuel cell centrifugal compressor, with a focus on the speed control of 40,000 RPM permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). An improved second-order super twisting sliding mode control (STSMC) strategy is proposed to enhance system stability and robustness by integrating the beetle antennae search (BAS) algorithm and grey wolf optimization (GWO) algorithm. The global search capability of BAS is used to improve the local optima issues of GWO, and then the improved GWO algorithm is utilized to address the issues related to parameter selection and convergence speed inherent in the STSMC. Theoretical validity of the proposed strategy is asserted through Quadratic Lyapunov Function, and its practicality is affirmed by thorough simulation. Comparative analyses are conducted with PI controller, traditional Sliding Mode Controller (SMC), and standard Super-Twisting Sliding Mode Controller (ST) under several case studies to show the superiority of the propose STSMC.

Abstract:Compressor control system should have the characteristic of low cost, robust performance and high efficiency as the critical part in air-conditioner system.A complete sensor-less PMSM-compressor vector control scheme was presented. Phase voltage and current are derived from DC voltage,DC current and inverter switching states. A back-EMF integration combined with improved voltage model is used for estimating rotor flux and speed in the high speed region. Detailed analysis was given concerning the specific current sampling problem and the solution was proposed. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of the control method, which is successfully applied in the real air-conditioner system, improving the performance while reducing the cost.

Abstract:The problems of global warming, a decrease of the available natural resources and many other problems in the world that happen recently become the major cause for increasing the demand for a new type of vehicle. That vehicle can be an environmental friend and so that a new generation of vehicles has been invented and tried to solve and avoid many problems. In this chapter, the proposed system is called the Multi-Converter/Multi-Machine system (MCMMS) which consists of two Synchronous Reluctance Motor (SynRM) that drive the two rear wheels of Pure Electric Vehicle (PEV). The SynRM speed and torque are controlled by using three different strategies of the PID controller. The PSO algorithm has been used as an optimization technique to find the optimal PID parameter to enhance the drive system performance of the PEV. In this system, the space vector pulse width modulation inverter for voltage source (VS-SVPWMI) has been employed to convert the DC battery voltage to three-phase AC voltage that feeds the SynRM motor in the PEV. The linear speed of the vehicle is controlled by an Electronic Differential Controller (EDC) which gives the reference speed for each driving wheel which depends on the driver reference speed and the steering angle. The specified driving route topology with three different road cases has been applied to acting and show the resistive forces that affected on the PEV during its moving on the road. In addition, to test the efficiency and stability of the PEV on the roads. Hence, this chapter has a full design, simulation and several comparison results for the propulsion electric vehicle system and it has tested implemented in the Matlab/Simulink environment version R2020a.

Abstract:This paper suggests a sensorless control of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) which is based only on voltage sensors. It can contribute to saving on manufacturing and maintenance costs by removing the considered sensors from the electric powertrains. Otherwise, the use of the proposed approach can contribute considerably to avoiding several problems caused by faults occurring on current and speed sensors. A current observer based on a mathematical PMSM model is proposed to estimate the dq currents in faulty mode. Also, an MRAS observer is designed to estimate the mechanical speed. In addition, a Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) strategy is included in the global control scheme to detect and isolate faults before switching to a sensorless faulty mode. The simulation are done using a 60 kW PMSM with an EUDC driving cycle combined with an aerodynamic model of the blue car electric vehicle in Matlab/Simulink. It is noted from the obtained results that the PMSM drive performances in faulty mode are very acceptable in terms of torque ripples, speed tracking, and robustness to external disturbances..

Abstract:In this paper, we present the vector control of a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) by a PI regulator whose tracking performance; speed, stability, and precision are satisfactory. However, we can see the influence of the variation in the resistance and load torque on the behavior of the controlled system. we analyze the simulation results found and then we make an inventory of PI disadvantages. This work is modified with a novelty by introducing a new control law namely sliding mode and backstepping control law. Then we analyze the results found making a comparison to those of the PI regulator.

Abstract:The six-phase motor control system has low torque ripple, low harmonic content, and high reliability; therefore, it is suitable for electric vehicles, aerospace and other applications requiring high power output and reliability. This study presents a superior sensorless control system for a six-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). The mathematical model of PMSM in stationary coordinate system is presented; its sliding mode observer (SMO) of back electromotive force (BEMF) acquires the motor speed and position information. As torque ripple and harmonic components affect the BEMF estimated value through the traditional SMO, the function of the frequency-variable tracker of the stator current (FVTSC) is used instead of the traditional switching function. By improving the SMO method, the BEMF is estimated independently, and its precision is maintained under startup or variable-speed states. To improve performance of the system, the auto disturbance rejection controller (ADRC) is used to suppress load disturbance and speed overshoot. To reduce model parameters, an ADRC with sliding mode algorithm is proposed, simplifying the structure and simultaneously solving the parameter tuning problem. Finally, comparing the ADRC with FVTSC SMO and the traditional PI controller shows that the new ADRC effectively improves the dynamic and static performance of the PMSM.

Abstract:A rotor-position estimation method for permanent magnet synchronous motor(PMSM) is proposed based on the rotor flux observation and phase locked loop(PLL).The instability problem in the back EMF integrator is sloved utilizing the node on the amplitude-frequency characteristic curve between the high pass filter(HPF) and low pass filter(LPF).The algorithm is simple,easy to understand,and the control performance meets the requirements of practical applications.Simulation and experimental results verify the effectiveness of the algorithm,and it can be applied into the inverter device,such as compressor based on the sinusoidal PMSM sensorless drive.
