Abstract:Purpose This paper aimed to explore the influence of envy on impulsive consumption from aspects of the internal psychological mechanism and boundary conditions.Design/methodology/approach Based on social comparison theory, four studies were conducted in this research: The first study explored the effect of envy on impulsive consumption; the second study explored the moderating effect of self-monitoring and the mediating effect of materialism; the third study explored the moderating effect of product type and the fourth study explored the effectiveness of social comparison contexts on the arousal of envy.Findings Study 1 showed that envy could significantly trigger consumers' impulsive consumption. Study 2 indicated that participants experiencing self-monitoring had a higher level of materialism and a stronger propensity to consume impulsively once the emotion of envy emerged. Study 3 suggested that when participants were more envious, their levels of materialism increased with more impulsivity to buy material products. Study 4 revealed that upward comparisons led to a higher level of envy and re-validated the mediating role of materialism between envy and impulsive consumption.Research limitations/implications This study provides evidence for the association between envy and consumer behaviour and clarifies the underlying mechanisms of the relationship between envy and impulsive consumption.Practical implications Marketers could take advantage of consumers' envy after social comparisons without damaging brand image.Originality/value First, this study extended the effects of envy on consumer decisions, suggesting that envy stimulates impulsive consumption by increasing consumers' materialism. Second, this study revealed the boundary condition of product type, namely, material and experiential.
The Spillover Effect of Incidental Social Comparison on Materialistic Pursuits

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to examine whether social comparison in a prior, nonconsumption circumstance (e.g. in an academic setting) affects consumers' materialism and subsequent spending propensity, and explores the incidental feeling of envy as the underlying mechanism. Design/methodology/approach Four experiments have been conducted to test these hypotheses. Study 1 manipulated social comparison in an academic domain, and measured undergraduate students' materialism after they compared themselves to a superior student or to an inferior student. Study 2 used a recall task to manipulate social comparison and examine the mediating role of envy. Study 3 examined which of the two types of envy (benign or malicious) affected materialism. Study 4 examined the downstream consequences on spending propensity in both public and private consumption contexts. Findings The results suggest that consumers place greater importance on material goods and are more likely to spend money on publicly visible products after making upward social comparisons than after making downward social comparisons or no comparisons. Furthermore, envy acts as the mediator for the observed effect of incidental social comparison on materialism. Originality/value First, this study improves our understanding of the consequences of social comparison and envy by demonstrating that incidental envy (both benign and malicious) experienced in a prior, unrelated social comparison can motivate materialistic pursuits. Second, the present research contributes to the compensatory consumption literature by revealing that, in a social comparison context, envy is the affective underpinning that gives rise to the motivation to engage in compensatory consumer behavior. Third, the findings also enrich materialism research by exploring an important situational antecedent in driving materialistic orientation.

Abstract:The sharing of travel experiences has become ubiquitous in today’s era. This study focuses on a pervasive trend among Millennial consumers: the experience of benign envy toward others’ positive travel experience sharing on social networking sites. Drawing on social comparison theory, the current study reveals why and under what conditions others’ positive experience sharing may trigger Millennial consumers’ destination visit intention. Using a mixed experimental design, this study finds that, among consumers with low trait self-esteem, luxury travel experiences shared by similar others stimulate focal consumers’ own intentions to visit the same destination. In addition, destination visit intention is triggered by benign envy toward the experience sharer. Important theoretical insights are provided regarding peer influence mechanism on social networking sites and travel consumption. Finally, managerial implications for destination marketers are presented with a focus on how to improve the effectiveness of social media marketing in targeting Millennials.

Abstract:Consumers feel envious of others more frequently than ever as they are constantly exposed to the purchases of others through social media. The extant literature is divided on whether consumers are more likely to envy the experiential purchases or material purchases of others. The current research identifies a moderator delineating when experiential vs. material purchases elicit greater feelings of envy. Specifically, we show that in a natural state when people compare the well-being of the purchaser to their own well-being, experiential purchases elicit greater envy than material purchases. In contrast, when people are prompted to compare the purchase to their own comparable purchase, material purchases elicit greater envy than experiential purchases. We further demonstrate the implications of understanding the psychology of consumption-related envy for marketers who seek to increase consumer engagement and purchase intention.

Abstract:Luxury goods symbolically represent social segregation and exclusion, thereby communicating superiority, exclusivity and distance. In three experiments, we tested the hypothesis that exposure to luxury advertisements in Chinese samples activates mental representations similar to those of social exclusion. Participants were more likely to perceive being rejected by models in the luxury advertisements than models in the non-luxury advertisements. Moreover, exposure to luxury advertisements increased participants' expectations of being rejected in a subsequent ambiguous social interaction. Finally, looking at luxury advertisements resulted in decreased life satisfaction, and this effect was more pronounced for participants with high rejection sensitivity than those with low rejection sensitivity. Overall, the results suggest that luxury advertisements evoke feelings of social exclusion in Chinese.

Abstract:Upward social comparison on Social Network Sites (SNS) might be positively related to online compulsive buying; however, there is little understanding of the mechanism of this relationship. In this study, we explored the effect of upward social comparison on SNS on online compulsive buying, and whether this effect is mediated by materialism and envy. A total of 568 Chinese undergraduates (mean age = 19.58 years, SD = 1.43) were recruited to complete a survey that included Upward social comparison on SNS Scale, Materialism Scale, Envy Scale, and Online compulsive buying Scale. The results revealed that upward social comparison was positively linked to online compulsive buying. Additionally, materialism and envy completely mediated this relationship. Our findings suggest that upward social comparison has a positive influence on college students’ online compulsive buying and that this influence is formed through a combination of cognitive factors (materialism) and affective factors (envy). This discovery not only clarifies the underlying mechanism but also proposes a potential way of alleviating online compulsive buying.

Abstract:The pervasiveness of image-sharing social commerce platforms has led to renewed interest in the topic of online impulse buying. These platforms possess unique characteristics that facilitate both social comparison and impulse buying behavior. However, little research has explored the relationship between upward social comparison and impulse buying in the context of image-oriented social commerce. Moreover, little is known about the underlying mechanism mediating and moderating this association. Drawing on social comparison theory, this study developed and examined a moderated mediation model which integrates upward social comparison, impulse buying, benign envy, and self-esteem to address this gap. The data was collected from 318 university students in Vietnam and analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results reveal that upward social comparison directly stimulates adolescents' impulse buying behavior, and benign envy mediates this relationship. Interestingly, self-esteem moderates the effects of upward social comparison and benign envy on impulse buying, respectively. This study provides researchers with a new approach to explain online impulse buying on social commerce platforms. In addition, our findings can serve as a reference for businesses and marketers to implement concerted strategies that encourage consumers to purchase impulsively on image-sharing social commerce platforms.

Is Conspicuous Consumption Influenced by Cyber-Ostracism? A Moderated Mediation Model

Abstract:This study starts from the cyber-ostracism experience that often occurs during social media use. Based on compensatory control theory, we explore the mechanism by which cyber-ostracism affects consumers' conspicuous consumption through the sense of control and also explore the moderating role of social media use intensity and implicit personality. This study used a sample of 407 social media users in China to verify the relationship between variables. The findings show that: there is a significant positive effect of cyber-ostracism on conspicuous consumption; sense of control plays a mediating role in the relationship between cyber-ostracism and conspicuous consumption; social media use intensity negatively moderates the relationship between cyber-ostracism and sense of control, and implicit personality moderates the relationship between sense of control and conspicuous consumption. The findings of the study help to reveal the formation mechanism of social media users' conspicuous consumption, which has important theoretical significance and practical value for establishing correct consumption concepts in the social media context.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of informative content, self-enhancing content, and remunerative content on consumers’ active and passive engagement and purchasing intention, based on the Uses and Gratifications Theory. The paper obtains corresponding conclusions through quantitative analysis by collecting questionnaires from young Chinese consumers. According to the survey data, this research indicates that remunerative and self-enhancing content will be more important drivers for active engagement, and informative content and self-enhancing content will have more significant and positive connections with passive engagement and consumers' purchase intention. This research also found that both consumer engagement and social media content will positively influence consumers' purchase intention, and consumer engagement demonstrated a stronger relationship with purchase intention. These findings will benefit scholars and practitioners working in the marketing field to target appropriate research groups.

Abstract:Purpose – This research investigates how luxury brand attachment and perceived envy may influence schadenfreude. In addition, the moderating influence of consumers’ need for uniqueness and private vs public consumption is examined. Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected from a consumer panel in Australia. A total of 365 valid and useable responses were analysed through Structural Equation Modelling in AMOS 26.Findings – The results show that luxury brand attachment has a significant impact on perceived envy. Consumers’ perceived envy also results in schadenfreude. However, luxury brand attachment did not have any significant impact on schadenfreude. The moderating influence of consumers’ need for uniqueness is partially supported. This research further confirms that consumers’ public consumption has more relevance to visible social comparison and potential feeling of malicious envy toward others. Implications – The research model may work as a strategic tool to identify which group of consumers (e.g. high vs low attachment) displays stronger envy and schadenfreude. Brand managers can also explore the personality traits and psychological dynamics that influence the consumers to express emotional bond and malicious joy within the context of consumer-brand relationships.Originality/value – This is one of the first few studies that have examined the relationships among consumers’ brand attachment, perceived envy, schadenfreude and need for uniqueness within a luxury branding context.
The Effect of Social Network Use on Chinese College Students’ Conspicuous Consumption: A Moderated Mediation Model

Abstract:This study explored the effects of social networking site use intensity, upward social comparison, and optimism on college students’ conspicuous consumption and their mechanisms of action using a sample of Chinese college students. A total of 717 Chinese college students (M = 20.08, SD = 1.44; 73.9% female) completed the Social Network Use Intensity Scale, the Upward Social Comparison Scale, the Life Orientation Test, and the Conspicuous Consumption Scale. The results indicate that (1) the intensity of use of social networking sites significantly positively predicts the conspicuous consumption behavior of college students; (2) upward social comparison plays a mediating role between the intensity of social networking site usage and conspicuous consumption; and (3) optimism moderates the second half of the mediating path between the intensity of social networking site use, upward social comparison, and conspicuous consumption. Specifically, the relationship between upward social comparison and conspicuous consumption among college students with low optimism levels is stronger than that among college students with high levels of optimism. Intensity has a stronger positive effect on conspicuous consumption through upward social comparison. It is concluded that the intensity of college students’ use of social networking sites can affect their conspicuous consumption behavior through upward social comparison, and this relationship is moderated by optimism. The results of the study help to reveal the influence of SNS (social networking site) use behavior on conspicuous consumption and its mechanism of action and have implications for reducing the negative impact of conspicuous consumption on college students.
The Sweet Burden: Young Consumers' Extroversion, Number of Friendship on Online Social Network and Luxury Consumption Tendency

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to build a model consisting of young consumers' personality, the use of online social network, and the luxury consumption tendency. We collected data from users of a popular online social network site in China, renren.com, which is Facebook copy. Over 150 respondents from two leading Chinese universities, respectively located at Beijing and Shanghai, volunteered to participate in the survey. The results indicated that one's extroversion strongly predicted the number of fans on renren. Number of friendship was also strongly associated with his/her luxury consumption tendency, after controlled the gender, grade, disposable income, and frequency of internet use. Moreover, the participants' place of origin (big city vs. small town) served to moderate the relationship, i.e., for young consumers from small towns, their increased extroversion is associated with larger online social network, but at the cost of higher consumption of luxury goods, while the effect on undergraduates from big cities was lessened. These findings offer insight into the influence of consumers' personality on luxury consumption and provide managerial implications for marketers to build luxury businesses in China.

Abstract:Envy fuels luxury consumption—both real and fake. Through three studies, we show that benign envy motivates online shoppers to purchase authentic luxury products, whereas malicious envy encourages counterfeiting. By triggering envy through its antecedents of deservingness and pride, we show that benign (malicious) envy motivates a general tendency towards moral (immoral) behavior, which has distinct downstream effects on consumer attitude towards luxury. Benign envy increases belief in the moral virtue of hard work, thereby inspiring consumers to aspire and strive for original luxury products. Whereas malicious envy triggers moral disengagement—dissolving the moral dilemma associated with counterfeiting. Malicious envy also makes consumers appraise luxury corporations as immoral—fueling the desire to punish the brand through counterfeiting. The effects hold for both brand‐generated envy and incidental envy. The findings have important implications for luxury branding to help control consumer demand for counterfeits.

Abstract:Journal of Travel Research, Ahead of Print. Although tourism researchers have begun to explore the behavioral effects of envy, there has been limited empirical research on the effects of benign and malicious envies on conspicuous consumption intention in tourism. Based on the integration of cognitive appraisal theory, compensation theory, and self-control resource theory, using two scenario-based questionnaires, this paper applies structural relational and mediation analyses to explore the effects of benign and malicious envies on conspicuous travel consumption intention. The results indicate that benign envy can directly positively influence conspicuous consumption intention, and also can indirectly rely on self-enhancement motivation positively, thereby influencing conspicuous consumption intention. However, malicious envy cannot directly influence conspicuous consumption intention. This envy needs to rely on self-enhancement motivation to have an indirect negative influence and rely on weakened self-control to have an indirect but positive influence. The important theoretical and practical implications of these findings are then discussed.

Abstract:On social media, luxury brand managers often use influencers' bragging language as a marketing tool. As modesty is considered a virtue in the Chinese context, Chinese influencers tend to adopt a humblebragging language style. Research has examined the impact of bragging language styles on luxury brands and has found that humblebragging, which appears to be modest, has a negative influence on brand attitudes. From the perspective of social comparison theory, we proposed a dual mediation model of malicious envy and trustworthiness to reveal the internal mechanisms and moderating factors of the negative effects of humblebragging. The results of three experiments indicated that compared with straightforward bragging, humblebragging was more likely to elicit malicious envy and lower levels of trust in an influencer, resulting in negative attitudes toward the luxury brand endorsed. Moreover, this negative effect was stronger when the influencer lacked expertise or had high similarity with consumers. Our findings enrich the antecedents of social media influencer marketing and provide managers with implications for maximizing the effectiveness of influencer marketing by matching influencers with word-of-mouth content.

Abstract:This study addresses the existing gap in theoretical and empirical research concerning the impact of social media influencers (SMIs) on followers' purchasing decisions. The primary aim is to explore and elucidate followers' journey from exposure to SMIs to the manifestation of conspicuous consumption. Grounded in the stimulus-organism-response framework and self-determination theory, the research proposes a dual model focusing on mediating factors such as social comparison, desire to mimic, materialism, and fear of missing out (FOMO). To achieve this objective, a survey targeting 272 respondents was conducted on the MTurk platform. The study findings reveal that exposure to SMIs triggers social comparisons and FOMO, subsequently influencing the acquisition of conspicuous products. Additionally, the study identifies that exposure to SMIs amplifies the desire to mimic and stimulates materialistic tendencies, thereby contributing to conspicuous consumption. The proposed Intrinsic-Extrinsic Consumption Motivation Model emerges as a novel framework to enhance our understanding of how SMIs influence conspicuous consumption, providing valuable insights for developing effective advertising programs.

Abstract:While previous research has shown that consumers strive to keep up their consumption with those who own superior possessions by purchasing conspicuously displayed products (i.e., “keeping-up-with-the-Joneses” effect), little attention has been paid to how nonmaterial comparisons might affect their subsequent preferences and spending propensities. This research examines whether and when social comparisons that occur in prior, consumption unrelated domains will influence consumers' conspicuous consumption behaviors. Building upon social comparison theory and the compensatory consumption literature, the authors propose that inferiority experienced in threatening nonmaterial social comparison situations motivates consumers to restore their sense of superiority in the material domain by engaging in conspicuous consumption. However, this depends on whether the comparison target is in a competitive or cooperative relationship with the self and whether consumers have a clear and well-articulated self-concept. Results across four studies confirm these hypotheses. Theoretical contributions and marketing implications are discussed.
Self-presentation and interactivity: luxury branding on social media

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to examine the influence of different self-presentation strategies (cultural, personal and informational posts) and interactivity on luxury brands’ social media advertising. Design/methodology/approach Three pre-tests and a main experiment collected responses from 459 Chinese participants in total. Findings Cultural posts significantly influenced brand attitudes, interest and purchase intention, and the effects were mediated by perceived reinforcement of the brand’s social media account. Informational posts added to perceived informativeness of the brand’s social media account, but were more likely to trigger a perception that the brand was conservative and distancing itself from consumers. Interactivity increased perceived closeness and reduced perceived inactiveness and conservativeness of the brand’s social media account and subsequently improved brand attitudes. Perception of brand’s social media accountfully mediated the effects of self-presentation strategies and interactivity on brand attitudes, interest and purchase intention. Research limitations/implications Self-presentation transfers desirable brand associations to luxury brands, reinforces brand image, and subsequently influences responses to luxury brands. Interactivity largely influences relational perceptions and brand attitudes. Practical implications Curating content about brand heritage and culture creates a social media self-presentation that is effective and influential on consumers. Brand and product information satisfies informational needs. Interactivity maintains customer relationship. Originality/value A theoretical model of luxury brands’ advertising was generated from the findings.

Abstract:This research aims to examine the effect of conspicuousness, uniqueness, quality, hedonism, and extended self on social media engagement. This research applies a quantitative, observational method to investigate how luxury brands portray luxury dimensions in their social media marketing and whether such portrayals impact consumers' engagement. We analysed a total of 1223 social media posts on Facebook and Instagram (July 2017 to July 2018) from four major luxury fashion brands (Chanel, Dior, Bottega Veneta, and Burberry).The results indicated that only conspicuousness significantly enhanced consumers' engagement, while other dimensions did not. The current findings suggest that the idea of luxury has begun to shift toward a different meaning. Thus, traditional luxury dimensions may not work in the social media context, providing significant managerial insights into the creation and management of luxury social media marketing. The current study is the first to examine how the portrayal of luxury dimensions affect social media engagement. The findings provide significant insights into the use of social media marketing by luxury brands, namely how they promote and portrayal their luxuriousness on social media platforms.
The Investigation of Hedonic Consumption, Impulsive Consumption and Social Sharing in E-commerce Live-streaming Videos

Abstract:The use of online live-streaming videos to promote brands and products in e-commerce is “exploding” in China. Whereas, little is known about the mechanism underlying viewers/ audience participating behavior in the rapidly growing online live-streaming videos for commerce phenomenon. Based on the stimulus–organism–response paradigm, this study endeavors to investigate the effects of content and social features (information quality, broadcaster attractiveness and para-social interaction) of on customers cognitive and emotional state (cognitive assimilation and emotional energy) and the subsequently their responses (hedonic consumption, impulsive consumption, and social sharing). 200 valid respondents were collected via cross-sectional online survey websites. The research results provide empirical evidences to support most of our hypotheses, indicating that hedonic consumption and social sharing behavior are determined by emotional energy and cognitive assimilation. These cognitive and emotional states, are influenced by information quality, broadcaster attractiveness, and para-social interaction. Impulsive consumption is only determined by emotional energy.
