Abstract:Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) are recognized as promising cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their facile synthesis, low-cost, high capacity, and environmental friendliness. However, high water content (>10 wt%) in the framework and unsatisfactory structural stability of PBAs are still the bottlenecks for industrial applications. Herein, interstitial K-doping is employed to minimize the interstitial water and enhance the structural stability of Na2-xFeMn[Fe(CN)(6)] (FeMnPBA), thereby boosting the sodium storage performance. The 3% K-doping (K-FeMnPBA3) demonstrates a much-reduced water content of 6.9%, accompanied by a notably enhanced capacity of 139.1 mAh g(-1) at 100 mA g(-1) and a remarkable capacity retention of 77.1% after 700 cycles. Furthermore, the K-FeMnPBA3/hard carbon (HC) pouch cell achieves a stable cyclability with 82.6% capacity retention after 600 cycles. This research offers valuable insights into low-water PBAs for practical applications in SIBs.

Abstract:Prussian blue analogs (PBAs) are considered as reliable and promising cathode materials for aqueous Zn-ion batteries (AZIBs), but they suffer from low capacity and poor cycling stability due to insufficient active sites and structural damage caused by the ion insertion/extraction processes. Herein, a template-engaged ion exchange approach has been developed for the synthesis of Co-substituted Mn-rich PBA hollow spheres (CoMn-PBA HSs) as cathode materials for AZIBs. Benefiting from the multiple advantageous features including hollow structure, abundant active sites, shortened diffusion path of electrons/Zn 2+ ions, and partial Co substitution, the CoMn-PBA HSs electrode shows efficient zinc ion storage properties in terms of high capacity, decent rate capability and prolonged cycle life.

Abstract:Prussian blue analogs (PBAs) are a competitive class of aqueous Zn-ion batteries (AZIBs) cathode materials with an ideal three-dimensional open structure for rapid insertion and removal of Zn 2+ . Meanwhile, PBAs have the advantages of high working voltage and a simple synthesis process. However, these materials are inherently poor in electrical conductivity and are susceptible to structural collapse during cycling. These defects affect the performance of zinc storage in this type of material. Here, the integration of zero-dimensional nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs) and in-situ grown manganese hexacyanoferrate (MnHCF) affords the MnHCF/NCDs cathode materials, which are applied to AZIBs. The introduction of NCDs modifies the active component of MnHCF effectively. Meanwhile, NCDs significantly enhance the overall electrical conductivity and structural stability of the composites and also provide abundant active sites for electrochemical reactions. Benefiting from these merits, the MnHCF/NCDs composite exhibits an excellent electrochemical zinc storage performance. It has a high discharge-specific capacity of 131.2 mAh g -1 at 50 mA g -1 and has outstanding cycling stability of 91% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 1000 mA g -1 . The electrochemical performance of PBAs-based cathodes for AZIBs may be improved using the straightforward and efficient method presented in this work.

Valence Engineering via In Situ Carbon Reduction on Octahedron Sites Mn3O4 for Ultra‐Long Cycle Life Aqueous Zn‐Ion Battery

Abstract:In recent years, rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have received much attention. However, the disproportionation effect of Mn(2+)seriously affects the capacity retention of ZIBs during cycling. Here, the capacity retention of the Mn(3)O(4)cathode is improved by effective valence engineering. The valence engineering of Mn(3)O(4)is caused by bulk oxygen defects, which are in situ derived from the Mn-metal organic framework during carbonization. Bulk oxygen defects can change the (MnO6) octahedral structure, which improves structural stability and inhibits the dissolution of Mn2+. The ZIB assembled from bulk oxygen defects Mn3O4@C nanorod arrays (O-d-Mn3O4@C NA/CC) exhibits an ultra-long cycle life, reaching 84.1 mAh g(-1)after 12 000 cycles at 5 A g(-1)(up to 95.7% of the initial capacity). Furthermore, the battery has a high specific capacity of 396.2 mAh g(-1)at 0.2 A g(-1). Ex situ characterization results show that initial Mn(3)O(4)is converted to ramsdellite MnO(2)for insertion and extraction of H(+)and Zn2+. First-principles calculations show that the charge density of Mn(3+)increases greatly, which improves the conductivity. In addition, the flexible quasi-solid-state ZIB is successfully assembled using O-d-Mn3O4 @ C NA/CC. Valence engineering induced by bulk oxygen defects can help develop advanced cathodes for aqueous ZIB.

The mechanism of the phase transformation is further investigated through ab initio calculations and detailed characterizations. The inserted Zn2+ is found to induce an intense Jahn‐Teller effect of the trivalent manganese, resulting in a strong lattice distortion. Coupled with the disproportionation reaction of manganese, the MnN6 octahedra are replaced by ZnN4 tetrahedra and produce the new K2Zn3[Fe(CN)6]2 phase eventually. The robust structure of the resulting K2Zn3[Fe(CN)6]2 phase contains wider channels for accommodating divalent ions and thus enables highly stable and reversible storage of Zn2+ ions. The findings of this work lead to a new understanding on the evolution of PBAs in ZIBs, and provide a promising cathode material.

Abstract:Mn-based Prussian blue analogues (Mn-PBAs), featuring a three-dimensional (3D) metal-organic framework and multiple redox couples, have gained wide interests in Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs). However, owing to the Jahn-Teller distortion and disproportionation reaction of Mn3+, these materials suffer from poor electrochemical performances and inferior structural stability. Herein, we prepare a typical high-entropy Prussian blue analogue (HE-PBA) with increased configuration entropy through integrating five transition metal elements of Mn, Co, Ni, Fe and Cu into the nitrogen-coordinated -M- lattice sites. Consequently, the HE-PBA presents enhanced uptake of Zn2+ with 80 mAh·g−1 compared to those medium-entropy PBAs, low-entropy PBAs and conventional PBAs, which can be assigned to “cocktail” effect of multiple transition metal active redox couples. Furthermore, a phase transition process from monoclinic phase to rhombohedral phase occurs in HE-PBA cathode, resulting in a stable structure of MN6 (M = Mn, Co, Fe, Ni, Cu) and ZnN4 co-linked to FeC6 through the cyanide ligands. Additionally, the advantages of entropy-driven stability are also confirmed by the calculated reduction energy and the density of states between HE-PBA and KMn[Fe(CN)6] (KMnHCF). This work not only presents a high-performance HE-PBA cathode in ZIBs, but also introduces a novel concept of high entropy benefiting for designing advanced materials.

Abstract:Prussian blue analogs (PBAs) have competitive advantages as cathode materials for aqueous rechargeable batteries, including stable framework structures, regulated redox sites, and straightforward synthesis methods. However, in most cases, there are vacancies and coordinated/interstitial water molecules in the framework of PBAs. This not only reduces the active sites but also makes their structure susceptible to collapse during the charge-discharge process, leading to low specific capacity and poor cycling stability. In this work, a favorable cathode material of Na1.39Mn[Fe(CN)(6)]center dot 1.2H(2)O (denoted as RNMHCF-H) equipped with abundant Na content, low crystal water and few defects was successfully prepared by a simple co-precipitable method. The RNMHCF-H exhibits a greatly improved capacity of 151.4 mA h g(-1) at 100 mA g(-1), good rate performance and impressive stability performance in aqueous Zn ion batteries (AZIBs). Furthermore, multifaceted characterization techniques were used to reveal the process and mechanism of Zn2+ storage in RNMHCF-H, and it was found that both manganese and iron participate in the electrochemical redox reaction during the charging/discharging process.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) with high theoretical capacity, low cost, and highly safety that have been considered as one of the most promising candidates for the next generation of electrochemical energy storage applications. However, the hydrated zinc ions have strong electrostatic force with the host material, causing the low output voltage and poor reversibility. Thus, exploiting suitable cathode materials with high voltage, specific capacity, and stable cycling performance is still a challenge. Recently, the development of cathode materials mainly focuses on manganese-based, vanadium-based, organic, and Prussian blue analog (PBAs) materials. Among these cathodes’ materials, PBAs have attracted great attention for AZIBs owing to their high working voltage, tunable chemical composition and microstructure, open 3D frameworks, low cost, and ease of synthesis. To record the recent rapid development PBAs materials toward high-performance AZIBs, we provide fundamental insights into the structure characteristics and synthesis control of PBAs and present an overview of recent developments of PBAs as promising cathodes for AZIBs. Finally, the key challenges and future opportunities in this rapidly developing field are also presented in this review.

Abstract:Owing to their open three-dimensional framework structure, Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) have attracted increasing interest as anode materials for future lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, some disadvantages, such as inferior stability and short cycle life, hinder its utilization significantly. Hence, we develop a simple method to prepare a unique truncated octahedral ZnMnFe-PBA with exposed {111} crystal facets. The doping of Zn into Mn-based PBA enhances structural stability and improves the electronic conductivity. Meanwhile, low-temperature calcination not only improves the electrochemical activity but also preserves the porosity to enable mass transfer. When the ratio of Mn:Zn is 90:10 and the calcination temperature is 100 °C, sample Z10-100 displays high capacity and excellent cycle life (∼510.6 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1, 168.9 mA h g-1 after 5000 cycles at 1.0 A g-1 with 99.9% capacity retention). The significant improvements in cycle stability and cycle life are attributable to transition metal ion doping and effective low-temperature calcination activation, which provide a facile approach for the synthesis of low-cost and efficient electrode materials.

Abstract:Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) have garnered much attentions in energy fields due to their three-dimensional open framework and electrochemical tunability. Noticeably, PBAs are also deemed extremely attractive as anode materials for batteries by virtue of their abundant internal active sites. However, their unclear redox mechanisms at lower potential severely restricts PBAs anodes to realize stable cycling performances. In this work, low-cost KxMn[Fe(CN)6]y□1−y·nH2O with diverse H2O content and structure are harvested via controlling the crystallization rate. It is firstly discovered that the KxMn[Fe(CN)6]y anodes undergoes multi-electron conversion reactions involving the fracture and recombination of MnN bonds, while the stronger FeC bond is preserved. Then, it is confirmed that weaker MnN bond which need to be prepared at a faster crystallization rate is more conducive to the fast electrochemical kinetics of the reversible conversion paths. Accordingly, the K0.09Mn[Fe(CN)6]0.66□0.34·3.40 H2O with higher H2O content and weaker MnN bond achieve the best Li-storage performances, exhibiting a reversible capacity of 480 mAh g−1 at a high current density of 1 A g−1 and considerable cycling stability exceeding 1000 cycles. The results also suggest that interstitial H2O could be beneficial for the better cycling stability of the KxMn[Fe(CN)6]y anodes. This work can provide new insights for the rational design of novel conversion anodes with high reversible capacity and superior cycling stability.

Ambient Synthesis of Vanadium-based Prussian Blue Analogues Nanocubes for High-performance and Durable Aqueous Zinc-ion Batteries with Eutectic Electrolytes

Abstract:Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) have been widely studied in aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) due to the characteristics of large specific surface area, open aperture, and straightforward synthesis. In this work, vanadium-based PBA nanocubes were firstly prepared using a mild in-situ conversion strategy at room temperature without the protection of noble gas. Benefiting from the multiple-redox active sites of V3+/V4+, V4+/V5+ and Fe2+/Fe3+, the cathode exhibited an excellent discharge specific capacity of 200 mA h g-1 in AZIBs, which is much higher than those of other metal-based PBAs nanocubes. To further improve the long-term cycling stability of the V-PBA cathode, a high concentration water-in-salt electrolyte (4.5 M ZnSO4 + 3 M Zn(OTf)2), and a water-based eutectic electrolyte (5.55 M glucose + 3 M Zn(OTf)2) were designed to successfully inhibit the dissolution of vanadium and improve the deposition of Zn2+ onto the zinc anode. More importantly, the assembled AZIBs maintained 55% of their highest discharge specific capacity even after 10000 cycles at 10 A g-1 with superior rate capability. This study provides a new strategy for the preparation of pure PBA nanostructures and a new direction for enhancing the long-term cycling stability of PBA-based AZIBs at high current densities for industrialization prospects.
Dual Redox Reactions of Silver Hexacyanoferrate Prussian Blue Analogue Enable Superior Electrochemical Performance for Zinc‐ion Storage

Abstract:Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) have been employed as host materials of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs), however, they suffer from low capacity and poor cycling stability due to limited electron transfer and the presence of interstitial water in PBAs. Herein, a vacancy and water-free silver hexacyanoferrate K0.95Ag3.05Fe(CN)6 (AgHCF-3) was synthesized by adjusting the ratio of K and Ag in the framework. It offers nearly four electrons involving two sequential redox reactions, namely, Fe3+/Fe2+ and Ag+/Ag0, to deliver a large capacity of 179.6 mAh g-1 at 20 mA g-1 with Coulomb efficiency of ~100%. The Zn//AgHCF-3 cell delivers an estimated energy density of 200 Wh kg-1, surpassing reported PBAs-based ZIBs. The formation of Ag0 in the cycling process merits favorable rate performance of AgHCF-3 (156.4 mAh g-1 at 200 mA g-1 with 80.3% capacity retention after 100 cycles). This investigation paves new pathways for high-capacity PBA cathodes.

Abstract:Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) have been considered as promising cathode materials for zinc-ion batteries. However, severe capacity decay issues hamper their deployment. Herein, Mn-ion-substituted zinc hexacyanoferrate (MZHCF) cathode materials were coated with polypyrrole (PPy) by in situ polymerization. The prepared MZHCF@PPy composites have exhibited significant ionic absorption affinity and great structural stability. Benefiting from the PPy coating, the ZIBs based on MZHCF@PPy cathodes and a conductive poly(acrylamide) (PAAM) hydrogel electrode exhibit enhanced capacities, which reach a maximum value of 190.1 mAh g -1 at 0.5 A g -1 , three times higher than that of the device based on MZHCF electrodes. The flexible ZIBs not only present outstanding cyclic performance but also retain stable energy storage capability under various deformations. The presented method is a promising technology for the practical application of rechargeable ZIBs with high safety and flexibility.

Abstract:Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) have attracted increasing attention in aqueous zinc-based batteries (AZBs) with the advantages of an open framework, adjustable redox potential, and easy synthesis. However, they exhibited a low specific capacity and a poor cycle performance. In this work, crystalline potassium iron hexacyanoferrate (FeHCF) with dislocation was designed and prepared by a poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) additive. The metastable state provided by PVP would cause an electrostatic interaction between cyanogen and water molecules. The reduced force increases the steric resistance of the water molecules entering the crystal. The low content of crystal water in FeHCF is associated with the formation of dislocation. The dislocation effect effectively improves the electrochemical reactivity and reaction kinetics of FeHCF. Thus, it presents a high reversible capacity of 131 mAh g-1 with a superior capacity retention of 85% after 550 cycles at 0.5 A g-1. When used as a cathode, the AZBs display a high voltage of 2.6 V, a fast charging capability (<5 min), and a satisfactory cycle stability with a capacity retention of 82% after 400 cycles at 0.2 A g-1 in decoupling electrolytes. This work provides an effective strategy for the design of high-performance PBA-based cathodes for 2.6 V AZBs.

Abstract:High working voltage, large theoretical capacity and cheapness render Mn3O4 promising cathode candidate for aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs). Unfortunately, poor electrochemical activity and bad structural stability lead to low capacity and unsatisfactory cycling performance. Herein, Mn3O4 material was fabricated through a facile precipitation reaction and divalent copper ions were introduced into the crystal framework, and ultra-small Cu-doped Mn3O4 nanocrystalline cathode materials with mixed valence states of Mn2+, Mn3+ and Mn4+ were obtained via post-calcination. The presence of Cu acts as structural stabilizer by partial substitution of Mn, as well as enhance the conductivity and reactivity of Mn3O4. Significantly, based on electrochemical investigations and ex-situ XPS characterization, a synergistic effect between copper and manganese was revealed in the Cu-doped Mn3O4, in which divalent Cu2+ can catalyze the transformation of Mn3+ and Mn4+ to divalent Mn2+, accompanied by the translation of Cu2+ to Cu0 and Cu+. Benefitting from the above advantages, the Mn3O4 cathode doped with moderate copper (abbreviated as CMO-2) delivers large discharge capacity of 352.9 mAh g-1 at 100 mA g-1, which is significantly better than Mn3O4 (only 247.8 mAh g-1). In addition, CMO-2 holds 203.3 mAh g-1 discharge capacity after 1000 cycles at 1 A g-1 with 98.6 % retention, and after 1000 cycles at 5 A g-1, it still performs decent discharge capacity of 104.2 mAh g-1. This work provides new ideas and approaches for constructing manganese-based AZIBs with long lifespan and high capacity.
Mn3O4-stabilized multiphase manganese oxides with micron cage structure for high-performance AZIBs

Abstract:Aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) have become one of the most prospective energy storage devices due to their low cost, abundant resources, and hypotoxicity. However, AZIBs suffer from a bottleneck, that is, significant capacity fading during long cycle and bad performance at a high current density. In this work, we report a valuable cooperation strategy of multiphase Mn-based oxides (N-Mn3O4/MnO) via a two-step solvothermal method to obtain an attractive cathode for AZIBs. The high reversible specific capacity and superior rate capability of this cathode result from the facile charge transfer channel and ions (Zn2+/H+) insertion in the porous heterostructures featuring phase stability caused by the synergistic effects of N-doping, heterojunction and porous micron cage. Because the d-band centers of N-doped Mn3O4 are closer to the Fermi level, they are looked forward to overcoming the intrinsic activation barrier more effectively and promoting the reaction kinetics for electrochemical reactions. The N-Mn3O4/MnO cathode demonstrates a reversible specific capacity of 227.8 mAh g−1 over 1500 cycles at 5 A g−1. The capacity retention reaches up to 92.2% regarding the stable capacity of 247.2 mAh g−1 as the reference. The capacity retention rate of 77.2% and a loss of only 0.0091% per cycle are achieved at a high current density of 10 A g−1 for 2500 cycles. These results all prove the advantages of N-Mn3O4/MnO of the hybrid material. The meaning of this work is to put forward a compositional and structural design strategy for the Zn-Mn system for the cost-effective and high-performance rechargeable AZIBs. Besides, the application of a novel water-soluble binder (LA133) to AZIBs in this work is a solid step for the practical application of AZIBs.

Abstract:Mn-based Prussian blue (NMF) is a prospective choice for sodium-ion battery cathode materials because of its high theoretical specific capacity, high charge/discharge voltage plateau, cheap raw materials and eco-friendly. However, it undergoes serious capacity fading during cycling owing to the unstable Jahn-Teller distortion caused by the oxidation of Mn 2+ to Mn 3+ . In this work, the structural regulation of NMF is achieved through zinc substitution, and the effect of structural adjustment caused by zinc substitution on the sodium storage properties of NMF is studied in detail. The experimental results verify that NZMF still maintain cubic structure with high content of sodium, less [Fe(CN) 6 ] vacancies and low level of crystal water. Moreover, the four coordination of Zn-N is lower than six coordination of Mn-N, confining the nucleus growth, thereby reducing the powders size of NZMF. The smaller powder size of NZMF with higher surface area results in shortened sodium ion diffusion path and accelerated the charge transfer. In addition, the electrochemically inactive zinc plays a pillar role in maintaining its structural stability. Consequently, NZMF reveals better rate capacity and cycling stability than original NMF. In particular, its capacity can be maintained at 68.6 mAh g −1 under a high current density of 1600 mA/g, and the capacity retention is 76.5% at 800 mA/g after 1000 cycles. This work provides a new insight to improve the structural stability of Prussian blue.

Achieving Long-Cycle-Life Zinc-Ion Batteries through a Zincophilic Prussian Blue Analogue Interphase

Abstract:The practical application of rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) has been severely hindered by detrimental dendrite growth, uncontrollable hydrogen evolution, and unfavorable side reactions occurring at the Zn metal anode. Here, we applied a Prussian blue analogue (PBA) material K2Zn3(Fe(CN)6)2 as an artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), by which the plentiful -C≡N- ligands at the surface and the large channels in the open framework structure can operate as a highly zincophilic moderator and ion sieve, inducing fast and uniform nucleation and deposition of Zn. Additionally, the dense interface effectively prevents water molecules from approaching the Zn surface, thereby inhibiting the hydrogen-evolution-resultant side reactions and corrosion. The highly reversible Zn plating/stripping is evidenced by an elevated Coulombic efficiency of 99.87% over 600 cycles in a Zn/Cu cell and a prolonged lifetime of 860 h at 5 mA cm−2, 2 mAh cm−2 in a Zn/Zn symmetric cell. Furthermore, the PBA-coated Zn anode ensures the excellent rate and cycling performance of an α-MnO2/Zn full cell. This work provides a simple and effective solution for the improvement of the Zn anode, advancing the commercialization of aqueous ZIBs.

Abstract:Prussian blue analogs (PBA) are a class of good electrode materials for energy storage devices, but the presence of transition metal ions dissolving in water leads to performance degradation. This paper proposes a dual effect additive‐modified electrolyte method. Through experiments and molecular simulation calculations, it demonstrates the construction of a stable and efficient PBA energy storage materials application system. Prussian blue analogs (PBA) exhibit excellent potential for energy storage due to their unique three‐dimensional open framework and abundant redox active sites. However, the dissolution of transition metal ions in water can compromise the structural integrity of PBAs, leading to significant issues such as low cycle life and capacity decay. To address these challenges, we proposed a dual‐effect additive‐modified electrolyte method to alleviate such issues, introducing sodium ferrocyanide (Na4Fe(CN)6) into aqueous alkaline electrolytes. It could not only capture Zn2+ dissolved on the surface of Na1.86Zn1.46[Fe(CN)6]0.87 (ZnHCF) electrode material during the cycling process but also conduct redox reactions on the electrode surface to provide additional capacitance. Through experiments and molecular simulation calculations, it showed that Na4Fe(CN)6 can restrict the movement of Zn dissolution into the electrolyte on the electrode surface. Based on this, an asymmetric supercapacitor based on ZnHCF//activated carbon was assembled with a modified electrolyte. The assembled supercapacitor displayed a specific capacitance of 1,329.65 mF cm−2, a power density of 2,900 mW cm−2, and an energy density of 388.28 mW h cm−2. This study provides a new idea for the design and construction of stable and efficient PBA energy storage materials by inhibiting the leaching of transition metals in PBA.
