Challenges and strategies in developing nursing research capacity: a review of the literature

Abstract:Objectives: This paper reports the findings of a critical overview of the development of nursing research capacity in academic departments. It examines the major barriers to developing research capacity, the capacity building strategies adopted (or proposed) within the literature, and considers the wider context within which such endeavours take place. Design: The literature review forms part of a longitudinal project utilising case study methodology. A key word search was used to locate relevant journal articles for the period 1999-2004, derived from the project's research question and an earlier literature review. A number of manual 'shelf searches' were conducted. Data sources: Bibliographic data were retrieved from The Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health literature, The Social Science Citation Index, and Medline. Review methods: Approximately 150 articles were retrieved, of which 47 were included in the study. Given the paucity of work in this area papers were not excluded on the grounds of methodological weakness. Major themes were identified in each paper and an analytical framework was developed. Results: Two main challenges affecting research capacity development were identified-material constraints and organisational contexts, and the changing roles and expectations of nurse educators. The importance of developing an overall strategic approach, clearly communicated, and accompanied by effective leadership was a point of common agreement. Debate existed on how research support should be managed, particularly the merits of inclusivity and the reconcilement of individual and organisational needs. Specific capacity strategies identified in the literature were the creation of infrastructures, the fostering of research cultures and environments, and the facilitation of training and collaboration. Conclusions: The literature offers many examples of capacity building strategies. However, more empirical studies are needed to understand the situated process of implementing and evaluating capacity building in individual academic departments, and how this process differs between geographical settings.
EFFORTS TO IMPROVE NURSING COMMUNICATION: A NARRATIVE REVIEW

Abstract:Background: Communication is an interaction process that is highly essential in building nurse-patient interpersonal relationships. Good nurse communication-patient will have a good impact on the treatment plan and recovery for the patient. Improper communication can lead to mistaken nursing care provision and even lead to injury and death. Objective: This literature review aimed to know the efforts to improve nurse-patient communication. Design: This literature review used narrative review design. Data Sources: The databases used in narrative review are Scopus, Science Direct, ProQuest, and PubMed. The journal is limited to the publication year 2016 - 2020 with the area of the nursing medicine journal, full text Portable Document Format (PDF) journal. This literature review uses 4 articles appropriate the inclusion criteria. The study of articles and data extraction were carried out separately by the researcher, if there were differences, the results were taken by consensus. Review Methods: The review method for this literature review using a narrative method by classifying the similar extracted data according to the research findings. Results: The databases used in the literature review are Science Direct, Scopus, PubMed and ProQuest. The journal is limited to the 2016 – 2020 publication year with the area of nursing medicine journals, improving nurse communication, full text open access pdf journals, research designs. This literature review was identified with the number of science direct: 45, Scopus: 242, PubMed: 36 and ProQuest: 492, then screened and found 4 articles that matched the inclusion criteria. The study of articles and data extraction were carried out separately by the researcher, if there were differences, the results were taken by consensus. Conclusion: Nurse communication training has a positive impact where nurses have skills in developing knowledge and capability in improving nurse communication performance. Good communication nurse-patient can increase the patient's cure rate.
A Descriptive Study on the Attitudes and Perceptual Barriers of Nursing Staff Towards Conducting Scientific Research

Abstract:Nursing research has a tremendous influence on current and future up gradation of nursing profession. Mandatory nursing research courses are being taught in almost every nursing program. But unfortunately it is found that nursing lags behind in conducting scientific research in compare to other disciplines due to various factors. Aim: To assess the nursing faculty members' attitudes and perceived barriers towards conducting scientific research. Method: Study was conducted by using descriptive research design; self - structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 65 nursing faculties from different nursing colleges of Guwahati by using convenient sampling technique. Result: Out of 65 faculty members majority i. e. (96.9%) were female, (56.9%) were single, (50.8%) had completed B. sc Nursing/ Post Basic B. sc Nursing, (49.2%) were clinical instructor, (40%) had 1 - 3 years of working experience and (40%) had involved in both teaching and clinical duty. In assessing attitude majority i. e. (86.2%) answered that nurses with different degrees were not in need of knowledge based on the research as much as medical doctors, (93.8%) replied that nursing profession consists of practical work and does not have to include research, (95.4%) disagreed that nurses do not need of research in nursing to improve the nursing care as nurses can manage that by themselves, (96.9%) disagreed that participation in research work does not contribute to increased skills in nursing profession. Lack of confidence to perform the research activities, unawareness of using electronic data base, lack of knowledge about research methodology, no sufficient time to find research ROL, lack of statistical knowledge, see little benefits for self from research, other organizational goals are considered as higher priority rather than research activities, insufficient time on work place and overloaded with curriculum, no time for conducting research were found as barrier in conducting research. Conclusion: Nursing faculties were found having positive attitude towards conducting nursing research, but due to certain barrier they were unable to conduct it. Most of the faculties reported that they need proper guidance, statistical training, funds and mentors to conduct scientific research.

Abstract:Exploring and implementing competency-based education approaches to assess research skills are necessary to close the gap between research and practice, promote lifelong learning among future nurses, and improve research literacy. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of competency-based education in improving the assessment of research skills among nursing students. A systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature was performed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcomes and Study (PICOS) eligibility criteria were used to select original studies published between 2017 and 2023. As a first step in the data-handling process, titles and abstracts of all articles retrieved by the search strategy were screened for relevance, and the irrelevant articles were discarded. The screening process was conducted by two authors independently, and the final decisions were made together. A meta-analysis was performed to assess the effectiveness of competency-based education in improving the assessment of research skills among nursing students. Five quantitative studies were appraised using the Joanna Briggs Institute checklist. The effect size was 0.69 ± 0.35 (P = 0.05), which indicates a high effect on research competency among nursing students who attend courses or training in research matters, after transforming data to correlation coefficient resulting in r = 0.5. The study encourages research literacy among nursing students. Through competency-based learning, students are exposed to a variety of research methodologies, ethical issues, and scientific writing conventions. This exposure enhances their capacity to understand, assess, and apply research evidence, empowering them to become knowledgeable consumers and field contributors. While making evidence-based decisions, nurses with research competencies can actively incorporate the most recent research findings into their clinical practice. Furthermore, nurses with strong research abilities can influence health policy and practice.

Abstract:Nurses constitute nearly 50% of the worldwide health workforce, and the World Health Organisation has advocated for an enlargement of their roles to guarantee fair health care and address the increasing need for services. The growing specialization in nursing practice has led to a rise in educational options for nurses, including the growth of PhD programs. These programs play a crucial role in preparing nurse researchers and educators. This growth underlines the importance of evidence-based practice and high-quality academic writing in nursing. The article highlights the importance of nurses' involvement in creating evidence-based practice guidelines. The active engagement of nurses in developing evidence-based practice recommendations is essential to ensure the practicality, relevance, and grounding of these guidelines in real-world clinical experiences. The advancement of nursing depends mainly on using rigorous research procedures to generate, analyze, and disseminate knowledge and data. The current article discusses essential research methodologies, including interviews, surveys, and bibliometric and altmetric analyses. It also aims to tackle concerns about inadequate writing skills, plagiarism, and insufficient comprehension of ethical norms in research and publishing. The recommended strategies to promote nursing research and publications encompass enhancing writing skills through specialized education, embracing open-access publishing, and utilizing social media for broader distribution following publication. Implementing these approaches would increase the quality and impact of nursing publications and reinforce nursing's role in defining health policy and enhancing the care of patients.

Abstract:Objective: To describe nurses' research knowledge, attitudes, and practices within an academic hospital system. Background: Hospitals are investing in research resources to meet Magnet® goals and advance the science of nursing, but nurses' specific needs for support are not well characterized and may vary by setting. Methods: We conducted an anonymous online survey of RNs at an academic hospital system in 2019-2020 using the validated Nurses' Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices of Research Survey. Results: Respondents (N = 99) indicated high willingness to engage in research-related tasks but low or moderate knowledge of and ability to perform them. Knowledge, attitudes, and practices of research increased with level of education, although gaps between willingness to engage versus knowledge and ability persisted even among doctorally prepared nurses. Conclusions: Research support for clinical nurses should leverage enthusiasm for research and focus on developing and applying specific practical skills, even among nurses with advanced degrees.

Abstract:Objective: Despite the significance of research in nursing practice and its role in enhancing the quality of life for cancer patients, nurses report limited opportunities to engage with research. Known barriers include limited organizational support, a lack of time, resources, and knowledgeable colleagues/mentors. The study aims to determine research knowledge, attitudes, and practices among cancer nurses and understand factors influencing nurses' involvement in research. Methods: Registered nurses responded to a cross-sectional questionnaire. Data were collected using a modified version of the Nursing Research Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices survey and the Barriers to Nurses' Participation in Research Questionnaire. Results: Three hundred and sixty-six nurses responded, of whom 15% had previously been involved in research. Nurses reported moderate to high research knowledge ( μ = 1.72), attitudes ( μ = 1.92), and practice ( μ = 1.79) scores. The most common barriers to engagement with research included a lack of time (78.0%), lack of incentive or reward (61.4%), lack of knowledge or skills (54.2%), lack of training opportunities (51.4%), and lack of experienced nursing research mentors (44.8%). Holding a specialist, advanced practice, or administrative role, and a postgraduate qualification were associated with higher scores on the knowledge, attitudes and practice subscales. Previous experience of conducting research was associated with higher knowledge and attitudes scores. Previous experience of authoring a paper and submitting a grant were associated with higher knowledge scores. Conclusions: The study reveals a moderate-to-high level of knowledge, attitudes, and practice regarding research among nurses, but low engagement. Barriers include lack of time, incentive, knowledge, training, and mentorship. Nevertheless, attitude scores, reflecting nurses' willingness to engage in research were high on average. The findings highlight the potentially modifiable nature of barriers to research engagement. Increasing capacity for nursing research may be achieved through investment in research support and training to overcome barriers to research, which may discourage nurses engagement.

Abstract:Tuberculosis is a bacterial disease caused by organisms of the M. tuberculosis complex, which is transmitted primarily by airborne droplet nuclei. Rapid and accurate detection of the bacilli is crucial for breaking the chain of transmission. Therefore, mycobacteriology laboratories have a major role to play in it. In this year, "the guideline for testing of M. tuberculosis, 2007" has been published. Here, it is emphasized that mycobacteriology laboratories must optimize their procedures for reporting results on the basis of current CDC recommendation: (i) reports of acid-fast examination of specimens within 24 hours of specimen collection, (ii) identification of M. tuberculosis within 21 days of specimen collection, and (iii) reports of drug susceptibility tests within 30 days of specimen collection. However, rapid mycobacteriology practices using liquid culture medium have many aerosol-generating handlings. Safety procedures, using a class II biological safety cabinet and so on, must be enforced for protecting laboratory personnel. As the improved technology available for use in mycobacteriology laboratories, such as nucleic acid amplification tests and others, are quite complicated, quality control is much more important than before. In this symposium, the 6 writers of "the guideline for testing of M. tuberculosis, 2007" have described the revised points of each chapters. We, as the chairpersons of this symposium, hope that this symposium would move a step forward toward rapid and accurate mycobacteriology practices in Japan. (1) Mycobacterial examinations and quality assurance: Satoshi Mitarai. It is well recognized that the mycobacterial examinations require careful quality assurances to perform highly reliable and safe laboratory examinations. As of 2003, a questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate the real state of laboratory examinations for mycobacterium. A total of 579 laboratories (291 of 390 hospitals and 288 of 397 private commercial laboratories) sent the replies, and the results were analysed from the points of quality assurance. Many laboratories adopted the sample concentration method and liquid culture methods. Meanwhile, the quality assurance activities for all examinations were not good enough to keep the quality and reliability. An effective quality assurance system should be necessary to maintain the good laboratory performances. (2) Revised "The guideline for testing of M.tuberculosis, 2007": Chiyoji Abe Rapid detection, species identification, and testing for drug resistance are necessary to control tuberculosis among patients and populations. Tuberculosis control officials and clinicians need access to prompt and reliable tuberculosis laboratory services. (3) The value of proper sputum collection instruction in detection of acid-fast bacillus: Takeshi HIGUCHI Modern techniques including molecular biology have been applied to routine laboratory works for rapid detection, identification, and drug susceptibility testing of mycobacteria. Even in using such techniques, however, poor quality specimens yield only poor results. To get a high quality specimen, particularly sputum samples, is very important. Therefore, laboratory technicians in our hospital have directly taught each patient how to expectorate good quality sputa since 2001. The teaching of patients has improved the rate of PI samples from 21.5% to 36.6% by Miller and Jones visual score of sputum. The teaching has also improved the rate of smear positive P1 samples from 11.4% to 28.8%. To teach patient how to get good sputa seems for useful for keeping the laboratory quality high. (4) The latest information for culture and the identification of acid-fast bacillus: Hajime Saitoh Culture methods are much more sensitive than smear ones to detect mycobacteria in the specimens. However, the duration of isolation by solid mediums is considerably long. Contemporary liquid culture methods allow for the rapid detection of M. tuberculosis complex, especially in smear positive samples. Therefore, in "the guideline for testing of M. tuberculosis, 2007", we recommend the routine use of liquid medium such as MGIT (Mycobacteria Growth Indicator Tube) or KRD in clinical laboratories. We also recommend the use of a simple immunochromatographic assay, Capilia TB, for rapid confirmation of the M. tuberculosis complex in liquid cultures. (5) The present condition of molecular detection and identification, and a future view: Mitsuaki NAGASAWA "The guideline for testing of M. tuberculosis, 2007" and the present condition of genetic screening, and a future view were described. It described about the kind of molecular detection and identification kit of Mycobacteria, results, an inspection request and extraction of a sample, preservation, and the measure against a biohazard. Moreover, it described also about quality assurance and the interpretation of a result. (6) Susceptibility testing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis: Toyoko OGURI Included below is a summary in susceptibility testing. The 9 methods that are used in the susceptibility test of Mycobacterium are in Table 1. The Committee for Mycobacterial Examination considered that a susceptibility test was attached great importance to rapidly reporting. (1) The target of organism for susceptibility test is Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex only. (2) The standard method is proportion methods using ogawa medium. (3) The inoculum suspension is recommended subculture growth in broth. (4) Rapid broth methods for susceptibility testing of M. tuberculosis are recommended susceptibility results for M. tuberculosis complex could be reported within 28 days of receipt of the specimen in the laboratory. (5) The detection of rpoB gene is added to the new method.
Enablers and Barriers of Research Engagement Among Clinician Researchers: Nursing, Allied Health and Medical Professionals

Abstract:Background: In response to the increasing involvement of nursing, allied health and medical professionals in research within clinical service roles, understanding the varying research capacities across public health institutions and professions is crucial. This study aims to explore the lived experiences of conducting research among nursing, allied health and medical health professionals within a tertiary public hospital setting in New South Wales (NSW). The focus is on identifying barriers and enablers to research engagement. Methods: Research active health professionals across nursing, allied health and medical professions were invited to participate in a semi-structured interview to discuss enablers and barriers experienced whilst conducting research. All interviews were transcribed verbatim, conceptual and thematic analysis of the interviews was conducted. Results: Nine allied health professionals, eight nurses/midwives and thirteen medical officers were interviewed. Key themes were categorised as barriers or enablers. The ethics regulatory process was identified as a strong barrier in all professions, other commonly identified barriers were lack of time to conduct research and lack of funding. Researchers reported difficulties knowing where to obtain assistance and support when required. Mentorship was the most common enabler identified by all three professions. In addition, a positive research culture and organisational support and assistance within the organisation were seen as strong enablers. Conclusion: This research provides insight into the barriers and enablers for active clinician researchers across three professional groups. We have identified priority areas to increase research capacity within our health care organisation and will focus on training in the ethics regulatory process and mentorship along with infrastructure support to strengthen the positive research culture across all professions.

Abstract:BackgroundIndia faces an acute shortage of nurses. Strategies to tackle the human resource crisis depend upon scaling up nursing education provision in a context where the social status and working conditions of nurses are highly variable. Several national and regional situation assessments have revealed significant concerns about educational governance, institutional and educator capacity, quality and standards. Improving educational capacity through nursing faculty development has been proposed as one of several strategies to address a complex health human resource situation. This paper describes and critically reflects upon the experience of one such faculty development programme in the state of Andhra Pradesh.DiscussionThe faculty development programme involved a 2 year partnership between a UK university and 7 universities in Andhra Pradesh. It adopted a participatory approach and covered training and support in 4 areas: teaching, research/scholarship, leadership/management and clinical education. Senior hospital nurses were also invited to participate.SummaryThe programme was evaluated positively and some changes to educational practice were reported. However, several obstacles to wider change were identified. At the programme level, there was a need for more intensive individual and institutional mentorship as well as involvement of Indian Centres of Excellence in Nursing to provide local (as well as international) expertise. At the organisational level, the participating Colleges reported heavy workloads, lack of control over working conditions, lack of control over the curriculum and poor infra-structure/resources as ongoing challenges. In the absence of wider educational reform in nursing and government commitment to the profession, faculty development programmes alone will have limited impact.

Abstract:Despite being considered the proverbial backbone of our healthcare systems, nursing still seems to struggle to scientifically demonstrate its contribution to care experiences and patient outcomes. This leads to erosive tendencies that threaten the development of the profession and its progress as an academic discipline. With this paper, we want to contribute to the theoretical discourse concerning the nature of nursing and the research into its effectiveness. We begin by outlining a set of prevailing paradoxes and their consequences relating to nursing and nursing research: the issue of demonstrating its unique contribution despite a clear societal mandate; a discrepancy between subjectively experienced effectiveness and objectively ascertainable effectiveness; and a mismatch between theoretical premises of nursing and task‐oriented cultures in practice environments. Using an example of a seemingly simple nursing intervention, we intend to demonstrate the qualities and complexities of nursing. We further illustrate this by drawing on several of our research projects using theory‐based evaluation methodologies. From these illustrative examples, we distil two insights relating to nursing interventions that we consider fundamental: the nurse, as a person, is central to its unique effectiveness; and there is always an interplay between context, intervention and its intended effect. We summarise our considerations and argue the case for conceiving research designs in alignment with theoretical premises of nursing.

Abstract:Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) in health is important for patient safety and quality care while Critical Thinking (CT) is a vital prerequisite to evidence based nursing. Despite their importance, in some settings neither EBP nor CT is taught assessed or implemented. This scoping review examined literature related to teaching, learning, assessment and implementation of EBP and application of CT by nursing students and graduates. Arksey and O’Malley framework was used to conduct the scoping review. PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE and Joanna Briggs Institute for EBP data bases were searched for studies conducted between 2000 and 2020. Inclusion criteria were adapted from the -Population, Intervention, Professionals and Patients, Outcomes, Health Care settings (PIPOH) framework. Search terms included; evidence based practice, nursing education, nursing practice, critical thinking, methods, barriers, facilitators to teaching, learning, assessing and implementing EBP and CT. A total of 2,303 articles were retried, eventually 37 met the inclusion criteria. Use of non-traditional instructional methods for teaching EBP and CT were documented including Problem Based Learning, concept mapping, simulation, think aloud, critical incidence technique, debates and role-plays, reflective journaling, article analysis, nursing journal clubs and multidisciplinary clinical rounds. Validated tools for assessing EBP and CT Skills included; California Critical Thinking Skills Test, Upton and Upton 2006 EBP questionnaire and Yoon’s 2004 Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory. Teaching, assessing EBP and applying CT skills is challenging. Therefore innovative teaching methods are required to promote learning while successful implementation require strategies to minimize detractors and sustain enablers of the process. A global perspective of advanced practice nursing research: A review of systematic reviews

Abstract:Introduction: The World Health Organization (WHO) called for the expansion of all nursing roles, including advanced practice nurses (APNs), nurse practitioners (NPs) and clinical nurse specialists (CNSs). A clearer understanding of the impact of these roles will inform global priorities for advanced practice nursing education, research, and policy. Objective: To identify gaps in advanced practice nursing research globally. Materials and methods: A review of systematic reviews was conducted. We searched CINAHL, Embase, Global Health, Healthstar, PubMed, Medline, Cochrane Library, DARE, Joanna Briggs Institute EBP, and Web of Science from January 2011 onwards, with no restrictions on jurisdiction or language. Grey literature and hand searches of reference lists were undertaken. Review quality was assessed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP). Study selection, data extraction and CASP assessments were done independently by two reviewers. We extracted study characteristics, country and outcome data. Data were summarized using narrative synthesis. Results: We screened 5840 articles and retained 117 systematic reviews, representing 38 countries. Most CASP criteria were met. However, study selection by two reviewers was done inconsistently and language and geographical restrictions were applied. We found highly consistent evidence that APN, NP and CNS care was equal or superior to the comparator (e.g., physicians) for 29 indicator categories across a wide range of clinical settings, patient populations and acuity levels. Mixed findings were noted for quality of life, consultations, costs, emergency room visits, and health care service delivery where some studies favoured the control groups. No indicator consistently favoured the control group. There is emerging research related to Artificial Intelligence (AI). Conclusion: There is a large body of advanced practice nursing research globally, but several WHO regions are underrepresented. Identified research gaps include AI, interprofessional team functioning, workload, and patients and families as partners in healthcare. Prospero registration number: CRD42021278532.

Abstract:Aim. The objective of this study is to provide a comprehensive analysis and synthesis of pertinent research on the subject of nursing professionalism. Background. The number of studies documenting nursing professionalism has been consistently increasing over the years; however, a comprehensive synthesis and analysis of the evidence presented in these reports is currently lacking. Evaluation. The scope reviews were conducted using electronic databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Embase, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Science and Technology Periodical Database (VIP), and Wanfang database. Key Issues. This review included 15 studies and identified 4 significant pertinent issues: (1) the need for further investigation into the implementation level of nursing professionalism; (2) the development of culturally sensitive instruments to assess nursing professionalism; (3) an in‐depth exploration of the associated factors influencing nursing professionalism; and (4) the critical implementation of diverse intervention strategies to enhance nursing professionalism. Conclusions. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the implementation level, assessment tools, influential factors, and intervention strategies in nursing professionalism research. In addition, it emphasizes the future research direction in this field. Implications for Nursing Management. Nursing administrators need to understand the significance of improving the professional education and training of nurses, fostering a conducive work environment, and providing support for their active development of professional skills and nursing professionalism. These factors collectively contribute to the long‐term professional development of nurses and enhance the quality of patient care.

Abstract:Background: The gaps between employers' expectations, theory and practice are the most prominent and universal issues in nursing education. New graduate nurses seem to be academically equipped but cannot integrate their knowledge into practice as they enter the clinical settings. Employers expressed limited critical thinking skills are a common problem among new graduate nurses. Objectives: To examine the efficacy of team-based learning (TBL) in developing problem-solving ability and critical thinking skills among nursing students and to identify the strategies used and obstacles to TBL in nursing education. Design: Systematic review (SR) of experimental and quasi-experimental studies. Database sources: A thorough database search was done on 19 April 2022 with four electronic databases: Academic Search Premier, CINAHL Complete, ERIC, Medline/PubMed. Eligible studies from the 1990s to 2022 were selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria of this SR. Review methods: The PRISMA 2020 guideline was applied in this SR. The JBI Critical Appraisal Checklists were used to evaluate the quality of the selected studies. Four reviewers participated in the review process to ensure rigour and credibility of the study. Result: The six studies reviewed included one randomised control trial, one crossover study, and four quasi-experimental studies. Two studies assessed the effectiveness of TBL in developing critical thinking skills and had shown in favour of TBL with statistically significant differences. Five studies evaluated the effectiveness of TBL in enhancing problem-solving ability. Three of five studies showed favour in TBL groups. The teaching strategies and obstacles in TBL use in nursing education were identified. Conclusion: TBL may be considered a potential active-learner-centred approach to develop critical and problem-solving skills in nursing education. Further research is needed to identify the optimal duration of implementing TBL to develop nursing students' critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities.
Technology-Supported Guidance Models to Stimulate Nursing Students' Self-Efficacy in Clinical Practice: Scoping Review

Abstract:Background: In nursing education, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills is crucial for developing competence in clinical practice. Nursing students encounter challenges in acquiring these essential skills, making self-efficacy a critical component in their professional development. Self-efficacy pertains to individual's belief in their ability to perform tasks and overcome challenges, with significant implications for clinical skills acquisition and academic success. Previous research has underscored the strong link between nursing students' self-efficacy and their clinical competence. Technology has emerged as a promising tool to enhance self-efficacy by enabling personalized learning experiences and in-depth discussions. However, there is a need for a comprehensive literature review to assess the existing body of knowledge and identify research gaps. Objective: The aim of this study is to systematically map and identify gaps in published studies on the use of technology-supported guidance models to stimulate nursing students' self-efficacy in clinical practice. Methods: This scoping review followed the framework of Arksey and O'Malley and was reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). A systematic, comprehensive literature search was conducted in ERIC, CINAHL, MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, and Web of Science for studies published between January 2011 and April 2023. The reference lists of the included papers were manually searched to identify additional studies. Pairs of authors screened the papers, assessed eligibility, and extracted the data. The data were thematically organized. Results: A total of 8 studies were included and four thematic groups were identified: (1) technological solutions for learning support, (2) learning focus in clinical practice, (3) teaching strategies and theoretical approaches for self-efficacy, and (4) assessment of self-efficacy and complementary outcomes. Conclusions: Various technological solutions were adopted in the guidance models to stimulate the self-efficacy of nursing students in clinical practice, leading to positive findings. A total of 7 out of 8 studies presented results that were not statistically significant, highlighting the need for further refinement of the applied interventions. Nurse educators play a pivotal role in applying learning strategies and theoretical approaches to enhance nursing students' self-efficacy, but the contributions of nurse preceptors and peers should not be overlooked. Future studies should consider involving users in the intervention process and using validated instruments tailored to the studies' intervention objectives, ensuring relevance and enabling comparisons across studies.
Health research capacity development in low and middle income countries: reality or rhetoric? A systematic meta-narrative review of the qualitative literature

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: Locally led health research in low and middle income countries (LMICs) is critical for overcoming global health challenges. Yet, despite over 25 years of international efforts, health research capacity in LMICs remains insufficient and development attempts continue to be fragmented. The aim of this systematic review is to identify and critically examine the main approaches and trends in health research capacity development and consolidate key thinking to identify a more coherent approach.METHODS: This review includes academic and grey literature published between January 2000 and July 2013. Using a predetermined search strategy, we systematically searched PubMed, hand-searched Google Scholar and checked reference lists. This process yielded 1668 papers. 240 papers were selected based on a priori criteria. A modified version of meta-narrative synthesis was used to analyse the papers.RESULTS: 3 key narratives were identified: the effect of power relations on capacity development; demand for stronger links between research, policy and practice and the importance of a systems approach. Capacity development was delivered through 4 main modalities: vertical research projects, centres of excellence, North-South partnerships and networks; all were controversial, and each had their strengths and weaknesses. A plurality of development strategies was employed to address specific barriers to health research. However, lack of empirical research and monitoring and evaluation meant that their effectiveness was unclear and learning was weak.CONCLUSIONS: There has been steady progress in LMIC health research capacity, but major barriers to research persist and more empirical evidence on development strategies is required. Despite an evolution in development thinking, international actors continue to use outdated development models that are recognised as ineffective. To realise newer development thinking, research capacity outcomes need to be equally valued as research outputs. While some development actors are now adopting this dedicated capacity development approach, they are in the minority.
