Abstract:The application of modified biochar has been proven to be a novel and promising strategy to improve saline-alkali soil. However, the effect of iron-modified biochar (FB) on the chemical properties of saline-alkali soil at different depths remains unclear. Therefore, we designed a soil column that divides the soil into three consecutive parts to explore the amelioration effect of iron-modified biochar on saline-alkali soil chemical properties and the response of bacterial communities along a depth gradient. The results showed that soil chemical properties were significantly improved with 1% FB application, while the amelioration effect of FB was different between topsoil and subsoil. A significant increment in activities of extracellular enzymes in topsoil and decrease in base cations in subsoil were observed in 1% FB treatment. Moreover, the abundances of halophilic taxa were higher in subsoil than in topsoil, especially for the phyla Bacteroidetes and Deinococcus. Furthermore, the abundance of beneficial bacteria (e.g., Alphaproteobacteria, Sphingomonas, and Pontibacter) in saline-alkali soil increased at 1% FB. Our results suggest the influence of iron-modified biochar on soil properties and bacterial communities along a soil depth gradient, providing a novel strategy for improving saline-alkali soil with biochar.

Abstract:There is great demand for the amelioration of saline–alkali soils, which requires efficient and economical amendments. Biochar addition could alleviate the adverse impacts of saline–alkali stress in crops. However, their efficiency and optimal amounts in saline–alkali soil restoration remain contradictory and inconclusive. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of biochar application on the properties of saline–alkali soil and crop growth, as well as to determine the optimal application rate of biochar. We conducted pot experiments with biochar (B) application rates, including 0 (CK), 1% (B-1%), 2.5% (B-2.5%), 5% (B-5%), and 10% (B-10%), studying the impact of biochar on soil water content (SWC), soil salinity, soil electrical conductivity (EC), soil ion content, soil nutrients, soil enzyme activity, and crop growth. A four-parameter Gaussian function was established for the curves depicting the relationship between soil salinity characteristics and the biochar application rates to determine the most optimal application rate. The results indicated that: (1) Compared to the CK, all biochar treatments improved soil water-holding capacity and reduced soil Na+ content and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR). (2) B-1%, B-2.5%, and B-5% treatments reduced soil content, EC, Cl−, and SO42− content over CK, while the results were reversed for the B-10% treatment. (3) Compared to the CK, all biochar treatments significantly increased soil fertility, enhanced soil enzyme activity (alkaline phosphatase, catalase, and urease activity), and significantly promoted the growth of maize. (4) The results of the Gaussian model suggested that a biochar application rate of 3.16% is the optimal rate for alleviating soil salinity in saline–alkali soils. This research demonstrated the potential of biochar to improve soil properties and promote crop growth and provided useful information on biochar application rates for ameliorating saline–alkali soils.

Abstract:Abstract The continuous growth of the world's population has led to an increased demand for food. Biochar (BC) contains valuable functional groups and nutrients, which have been demonstrated to enhance soil properties and boost crop yield. Nonetheless, unmodified BC exhibits significant alkalinity and a large salt concentration; thus, its efficacy in improving saline‐alkali soil remains a matter of contention. Therefore, scholars aim to address the aforementioned limitations by adapting BC. In this paper, a summary is given of the methods used to modify BC and the effects of modified BC on salt‐affected soil and saline‐alkali soil properties, including pH, nutrients and microbial activity. The effects and principles of different modifiers and modification methods on BC's physicochemical properties (porosity and functional group content and type, etc.) were revealed. Furthermore, the principle of soil improvement by modified BC varies depending on the modification method. Although modified BC can effectively enhance salt‐affected soil, its excessive application and improper selection of modifiers can aggravate Na + toxicity or introduce other pollutants into salt‐affected soil. Therefore, using modified BC with care is imperative according to the actual situation. In this review, we provide a detailed introduction to the methods and principles of BC modification for saline‐alkali soil. Furthermore, we identify the shortcomings and future research directions in this field. These insights are valuable when choosing proper BC modification methods for salt‐affected soil.

Abstract:Saline-alkali soil poses significant chanllenges to sustainable development of agriculture. Although biochar is commonly used as a soil organic amendment, its microbial remediation mechanism on saline-alkali soil requires further confirmation. To address this, we conducted a pot experiment using cotton seedlings to explore the potential remediation mechanism of rice straw biochar (BC) at three different levels on saline-alkaline soil. The results showed that adding of 2% biochar greatly improved the quality of saline-alkaline soil by reducing pH levels, electrical conductivity (EC), and water-soluble ions. Moreover, biochar increased the soil organic matter (SOM), nutrient availability and extracellular enzyme activity. Interestingly, it also reduced soil salinity and salt content in various cotton plant tissues. Additionally, biochar had a notable impact on the composition of the microbial community , causing changes in soil metabolic pathways. Notably, the addition of biochar promoted the growth and metabolism of dominant salt-tolerant bacteria, such as Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, Acidobacteriota, and Actinobacteriota. By enhancing the positive correlation between microorganisms and metabolites, biochar alleviated the inhibitory effect of salt ions on microorganisms. In conclusion, the incorporation of biochar significantly improves the soil microenvironment, reduces soil salinity, and shows promise in ameliorating saline-alkaline soil conditions.

Abstract:Different chemical fertilizers were applied frequently in different stages of crop growth to improve crop productivity.But the utilization of chemical fertilizer brought many negative effects on soil quality.In heavy saline-alkali soil region,many fields were reclaimed to farmland.Accompanied with agricultural activities,how to improve soil fertility and decrease soil salinity was still unsolved.Biochar had been used for many purposes in agriculture due to its special property.In this paper,different amount of biochar (0,3 t hm-2,6 t hm-2,9 t hm-2) was added to surface soil combined with or without chemical fertilizer (nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer) in different stage of maize growth.Resuhs showed that soil physical property became worse in heavy saline-alkali soil under natural condition.Chemical fertilizer accelerated soil degradation.The biochar application did not decrease soil bulk density and not increase saturated soil moisture and water holding capacity under uncultivated crop.Biochar of 3 t ha-1 mostly improved the formation of ＞ 2 mm soil aggregate.The leaching by rainwater largely depressed soil salt at 0-20 cm soil depth during the rainy season.Further,the larger amount application of biochar had the more leaching effect on soil salt.At the end of rainy season in August and September,soil salt accumulated in the surface soil (0-20 cm) due to the rise of ground water level and the strength of solar radiation,the application of biochar inhibited the salt accumulation in surface soil,but the application of chemical fertilizer blocked the inhibiting effects.
Biochar Application Reduces Saline–Alkali Stress by Improving Soil Functions and Regulating the Diversity and Abundance of Soil Bacterial Community in Highly Saline–Alkali Paddy Field

Abstract:Saline–alkali soils seriously restrict the soil functions and the growth and diversity of soil microorganisms. Biochar can alleviate the negative effects of saline–alkali stress. However, it remains unclear how biochar reduces saline–alkali stress by improving soil functions and regulating the abundance and diversity of the soil bacterial community in highly saline–alkali paddy fields. To address this, a paddy field experiment was conducted in a highly saline–alkali paddy field using two nitrogen application levels (0 and 225 kg ha−1) and four biochar application rates (0, 1.5%, 3.0%, and 4.5% biochar, w/w). The results show that, compared with C0, biochar application, especially when combined with N fertilizer, significantly decreased the soil pH, exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP), saturated paste extract (ECe), and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) while significantly increasing cation exchange capacity (CEC). These indicated that biochar can effectively reduce saline–alkali stress. Biochar application significantly increased soil content of total nitrogen (TN), alkali-hydrolysable N (AN), available P (AP), available K (AK), soil organic matter (SOM), and soil C/N ratio, both with or without N fertilization. Furthermore, biochar application further increased the relative abundance of bacterial communities and modified the bacterial community structure in highly saline–alkali paddy soils. Under C3N2, C2N2, and C1N2, Chao1 increased by 10.90%, 10.42%, and 1.60% compared to C0N2. Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Chloroflexi were the top three phyla in bacterial abundance. Biochar significantly increased the abundance of Proteobacteria while reducing Bacteroidetes and Chloroflexi, regardless of N fertilization. Correlation analysis results showed that the improvements in soil chemical and saline–alkali properties, as well as nutrient bioavailability after biochar application, had a positive effect on bacterial communities in highly saline–alkali paddy soils.

Abstract:Salt-affected soil has become one of the major threats to soil health. However, the evaluation of biochar amendment effects and the underlying mechanisms on the physical, chemical, and biological indicators used for assessing the health of salt-affected soils is lacking. This review summarized biochar performance and mechanisms in improving the health of salt-affected soils. Biochar addition significantly improved soil physico-chemical properties by enhancing aggregate stability (15.0–34.9%), porosity (8.9%), and water retention capacity (7.8–18.2%), increasing cation exchange capacity (21.1%), soil organic carbon (63.1%), and nutrient availability (31.3–39.9%), as well as decreasing bulk density (6.0%) and alleviating salt stress (4.1–40.0%). Following biochar incorporation, soil biological health can also be improved, particularly enhancing microbial biomass (7.1–25.8%), facilitating enzyme activity (20.2–68.9%), and ultimately increasing plant growth. To properly assess the health of salt-affected soils, it is important to select indicators related to ecological service functions including plant production, water quality, climate change, and human health. This will improve the evaluation of soil multifunctionality and enhance current soil health assessment methods. Finally, limitations and future needs of biochar research and biochar-based technologies for soil health assessment in salt-affected soils are discussed. Based on a global meta-analysis to illustrate biochar effects on salt-affected soil health indicators, this review offers valuable insights for developing sustainable biochar-based tools for remediating salt-affected soil.
Biochar Decreases Fertilizer Leaching and Promotes Miscanthus Growth in Saline-Alkaline Soil

Abstract:Biochar has been widely reported to improve soil conditions and affect plant growth. However, its effectiveness is limited by soil type and production technology. Considering the application effect of biochar in saline alkali soil, there is currently a lack of in-depth mechanism explanations in the research. Therefore, we designed an experiment to explore the effect of biochar on plant growth in saline alkali soil and conducted soil column experiments in a greenhouse environment using composite inorganic fertilizer (NPK). The results showed that biochar significantly affected the distribution of soil nutrient content at different depths, with a significant increase in fertility levels in the surface and middle layers and a decrease in fertility levels in deep soils. Compared to using fertilizers alone, the combined use of biochar and fertilizers further expands the enrichment effect and significantly reduces the leaching of fertilizers into deeper layers. At the same time, the application of biochar also improved soil properties, including an increase in electrical conductivity and organic matter content, as well as an increase in soil enzyme activity. On the other hand, the application of biochar also increases the activity of antioxidant enzymes and the content of osmoregulation substances in plants, reducing the environmental stress that plants are subjected to. Therefore, our results indicate that biochar can reduce the leaching of fertilizers into deep soil layers, improve soil properties, and promotes the growth of Miscanthus in saline alkali soils.

Abstract:To solve the problem of soil degradation in coastal saline–alkali land, three different types of biochar (rice straw biochar, magnetic biochar, and humic acid–magnetic biochar) were prepared to remedy the saline–alkali soil under different mixing ratios. The effects of biochar on the growth of crops in saline–alkali soil were explored through a pot experiment on Chinese cabbage. The experimental results showed that the soil leaching treatment combined with humic acid–magnetic biochar could effectively repair the coastal saline–alkali soil. After adding 5% humic acid–magnetic biochar, the content of soil organic matter was 33.95 g/kg, the water content was 13.85%, and the contents of available phosphorus and available potassium were 9.43 mg/kg and 29.51 mg/kg. After adding 5% humic acid–magnetic biochar, the plant height of Chinese cabbage was 9.16 ± 0.19 cm, and the plant germination rate reached 83.33 ± 5.54%. The incorporation of biochar could effectively increase the chlorophyll content and soluble protein content of pakchoi and reduce the soluble sugar content of pakchoi. The study analyzed the effect of different modified biochar on saline–alkali land restoration and crop growth and explored the action rule of hydrochloric acid magnetic biochar on saline–alkali land restoration, which has important practical value for improving coastal saline–alkali land.

Biochar effects on salt-affected soil properties and plant productivity: A global meta-analysis

Abstract:Biochar has been recognized as a promising practice for ameliorating degraded soils, yet the consensus on its effects remains largely unknown due to the variability among biochar, soil and plant. This study therefore presents a meta-analysis synthesizing 92 publications containing 987 paired data to scrutinize biochar effects on salt-affected soil properties and plant productivity. Additionally, a random meta-forest approach was employed to identify the key factors of biochar on salt-affected soil and plant productivity. Results showed that biochar led to significant reductions in electrical conductivity (EC), bulk density (BD) and pH by 7.4%, 4.7% and 1.2% compared to the unamended soil, respectively. Soil organic carbon (by 55.1%) and total nitrogen (by 31.3%) increased significantly with biochar addition. Moreover, biochar overall enhanced plant productivity by 31.5%, and more pronounced increases in forage/medicinal with higher salt tolerance than others. The results also identified that the soil salinity and biochar application rate were the most important co-regulators for EC and PP changes. The structural equation model further showed that soil salinity (P < 0.001), biochar pH (P < 0.001) and biochar specific surface area (P < 0.01) had a significant negative effect on soil EC, but it was positively impacted by biochar pyrolysis temperature (P < 0.05). Furthermore, plant productivity was positively affected by biochar pH (P < 0.001) and biochar feedstock (P < 0.01), while negatively influenced by biochar pyrolysis temperature (P < 0.01). This study highlights that woody biochar with 7.6 < pH < 9.0 and pyrolyzed at 400-600 °C under 30-70 t ha-1 application rate in moderately saline coarse soils is a recommendable pattern to enhance forage/medicinal productivity while reducing soil salinity. In conclusion, biochar offers promising avenues for ameliorating degradable soils, but it is imperative to explore largescale applications and field performance across different biochar, soil, and plant types.

Abstract:The literature has shown that biochar can serve as potential amendment to achieve sustainable agriculture and environment. The accessibility and availability of cheap feedstock are considered as important constraint factors for the widespread application of biochar in agriculture. Marginal lands are widely distributed globally, several times larger than arable land, and hold little value for food production due to poor soil conditions. However, these lands are suitable for growing plants, which can be used as feedstock for biochar production. The salt-affected lands, as one of the main marginal lands, are particularly suitable for cultivating diverse varieties of halophytes that can be pyrolyzed into biochar, bio-gas, and bio-oil. The halophyte-derived biochar is useful to produce a desirable acid soil conditioner due to its high ash and rich bases, and improves soil characteristics under extreme saline conditions. Additionally, syngas and bio-oil hold potential benefits as fuels and industrial raw materials. This study introduces an innovative management technique for marginal lands such as salt-affected land, which can provide all-round benefits in food production, land management, vegetation coverage, carbon sequestration, and climate change mitigation.

Abstract:Biochar, a by-product of biomass pyrolysis, has been suggested as a mean to combat climate change, and at the same time to achieve agricultural and environmental benefits. As one possible source of the components with high aromatic structure in soil humus, biochar is of great importance in increasing soil carbon storage and improving soil nutrient retention and nutrient availability, and in maintaining the balance of soil ecosystem. This paper briefly reviewed and synthesized recent findings and discussions regarding the production and characteristics of biochar, its effects on global climate change and particularly in relation to the environmental effects of biochar in soils. Agronomic benefits of biochar application are critically highlighted because researches show that biochar had varied effects on crop productivity thorough the different bio-physical interactions between the biochar and the soils, which are deserved for further investigations. Potential pitfalls and knowledge gaps were briefly discussed on the environmental behavior and the effects of biochar in agricultural ecosystem.
Optimizing biochar application to improve soil physical and hydraulic properties in saline-alkali soils

Abstract:Biochar application has been a promising approach to improve soil quality but their optimal amount in improving physical and hydraulic properties remains contradictory and inconclusive. The objective of this study was to examine and propose an optimal biochar application amount in saline alkali soil considering their impact on soil physical and hydraulic properties. A three-year field experiment was conducted in the saline-alkali soils under plastic film-mulched drip irrigation in Xinjiang, China. The studied physical and hydraulic properties included bulk density, soil porosity, saturated soil water content (θs), permanent wilting point (PWP), field capacity (FC), plant available water (PAW), spatial distribution of soil water content, planar soil water storage (PSWS), and soil evaporation. The treatments included biochar application amounts of 0 (CK), 10 (B10), 50 (B50), and 100 t ha−1 (B100) in 2018. Additional two treatments with 25 t ha−1 (B25) and 30 t ha−1 (B30) were added in 2019 and 2020, respectively. A four-parameter Gaussian function was fitted to the single-peak curves of the studied hydraulic properties vs. biochar application amounts to determine the most optimal biochar application amount. The results indicated that: (1) All of the biochar treatments significantly decreased bulk density and increased soil porosity over CK; (2) B10 and B25 treatments significantly increased θs, FC, PAW, PWP, and PSWS of root zones in the film-mulched zones over CK, but reverse results were observed in the B50 and B100 treatments; (3) Daily and cumulative soil evaporation were increased in no mulch zones of all biochar treatments over CK; (4) A dose of 21.9 t ha−1 was recommended as the most optimal biochar application amount for improving physical and hydraulic properties of saline-alkali soil. This research provided useful information on biochar application amounts for improving physical and hydraulic properties in saline-alkali soil.

In this study, based on the hydrothermal method for preparing corn stalks derived biochar prepared modifiers and water-soluble fertilizers for using in soda saline-alkali soil. Through field microplot experiments, the separate and interactive effects of different concentrations of them were studied, as well as their influence on the growth of alfalfa and Leymus chinensis on saline-alkali soil. The combined application of modifiers and water-soluble fertilizers can effectively increase soil nutrient content and enzyme activity, significantly reducing soil pH and alkalinity. It was found that the optimal application rate of 20 g/kg of improver resulted in a 4.99% decrease in pH of soil and 11.23% decrease in alkalinity. Additionally, organic matter, available P2O5, NH4+-N, and NO3--N contents increased by 25.74%, 28.48%, 19.87%, and 32.90%, respectively. Soil enzyme activities generally peaked at 20 g/kg of modifiers and water-soluble fertilizers, with sucrase showing the most significant increases, with 31.14% for alfalfa and 25.52% for L. chinensis. Two-way ANOVA results demonstrated significant interaction effects between the modifiers and water-soluble fertilizer on pH, Ca2+ and Mg2+ content, quick-acting potassium content, soil sucrase and urease activity, biomass of soil and alfalfa leaf width. Moreover, planting alfalfa and L. chinensis indicated that combined use of modifies and fertilizer had a significant effect on promoting crop cultivation in saline-alkali soil. Our findings provided a robust theoretical groundwork for improving the management of saline soils and optimizing crop production in such challenging environments.

Abstract:Abstract The severe soda-alkali soil in the western Songnen Plain was used as the experimental object. Compared with the application of common biochar, the effects of modified biochar on the basic physical and chemical properties, agglomerate distribution, organic carbon and total nitrogen distribution of saline-alkali soil were analyzed. The experiment adopts the indoor culture method, and the use of common biochar (B) and iron modified biochar and calcium modified biochar is 0, 1.5%, 5% . A total of 7 treatments: CK, B1.5, B5, FBS1.5, FBS5, CBS1.5, CBS5. The results show: 1. Modified biochar significantly reduced soil pH with a maximum reduction of 12.2%. Both biochar and modified biochar significantly reduce soil ESP. The reduction effect of FB5 was the most significant in each treatment, which was 58.2% lower than CK, followed by FB5, which was 41.8% lower than CK. The introduction of cations and the significant reduction of ESP showed strong Na+ substitution and adsorption capacity, thereby alleviating soil salt accumulation and improving soil basic physical and chemical properties. 2. Both modified biochar and ordinary biochar increased the content of soil microaggregates (0.053-0.25mm). The modified biochar was significantly higher than ordinary biochar, and the function of improving soil structural stability was stronger. Among them, CBS improvement effect is better than FBS. The ratio of CBS5 treatment increased the microaggregate to the highest, with an increase of 66.4%; the increase of CBS1.5 treatment was 56.2%; the proportion of FBS5 and FBS1.5 microaggregates increased by 51.1% and 32.2% respectively. The geometric mean diameter (GMD) of all treatments was higher than that of CK treatment, in which CBS5 treatment significantly increased GMD by 18.6%; modified biochar treatment increased mean weight diameter (MWD), of which CBS5 significantly improved MWD. The increase was 8.8%.
Effects of Biochar Application on Soil Organic Carbon in Degraded Saline-sodic Wetlands of Songnen Plain, Northeast China

Abstract:Biochar amendment is considered as an efficient practice for improving carbon storage in soils. However, to what extent that biochar application promotes organic carbon in saline-sodic soils remains poorly understood. By comparing soil organic carbon (SOC) contents change before and after biochar addition, we deciphered the driving factors or processes that control SOC change in response to biochar application. A limited increase in SOC was observed, about by 1.16%–12.80%, even when biochar was applied at the rate of 10% of bulk soil weight. Biochar application enhanced soil dissolved organic carbon (DOC) significantly by up to 67%. It was estimated that about 50% SOC was allocated to small macroaggregates (250–2000 µm, CPOC), and SOC in silt and clay-sized particles (< 53 µm) decreased obviously after biochar addition. Microbial biomass increased with biochar amendment, of which actinomycetes (ACT), fungus (FUN), protozoon (PRO), and bacteria with straight-chain saturated fatty acids (OB) increased remarkably. Multiple linear regression models implied that DOC was governed by ACT and soil N: P ratio, while SOC mostly depended on CPOC. The principal component analysis and the partial least square path model (PLS-PM) indicated that biochar addition aggravated nitrogen limitation in saline-sodic soils, and effects of microorganisms on regulating SOC greatly depended on nitrogen bioavailability. Biochar application had vastly changed interactions between environmental factors and SOC in saline-sodic soils. Effects of nutrients on SOC shifted to great inhibition from strong stimulation after biochar addition, meanwhile, aggregation was the only factor presenting positive effects on SOC. How to eliminate nutrient limitation and better soil aggregation process should be considered in priority when biochar was used to improve SOC in saline-sodic soils.

Abstract:Soil acidity is a serious problem in agricultural lands as it directly affects the soil, crop production, and human health. Soil acidification in agricultural lands occurs due to the release of protons (H + ) from the transforming reactions of various carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur-containing compounds. The use of biochar (BC) has emerged as an excellent tool to manage soil acidity owing to its alkaline nature and its appreciable ability to improve the soil's physical, chemical, and biological properties. The application of BC to acidic soils improves soil pH, soil organic matter (SOM), cation exchange capacity (CEC), nutrient uptake, microbial activity and diversity, and enzyme activities which mitigate the adverse impacts of acidity on plants. Further, BC application also reduce the concentration of H + and Al 3+ ions and other toxic metals which mitigate the soil acidity and supports plant growth. Similarly, soil salinity (SS) is also a serious concern across the globe and it has a direct impact on global production and food security. Due to its appreciable liming potential BC is also an important amendment to mitigate the adverse impacts of SS. The addition of BC to saline soils improves nutrient homeostasis, nutrient uptake, SOM, CEC, soil microbial activity, enzymatic activity, and water uptake and reduces the accumulation of toxic ions sodium (Na + and chloride (Cl - ). All these BC-mediated changes support plant growth by improving antioxidant activity, photosynthesis efficiency, stomata working, and decrease oxidative damage in plants. Thus, in the present review, we discussed the various mechanisms through which BC improves the soil properties and microbial and enzymatic activities to counter acidity and salinity problems. The present review will increase the existing knowledge about the role of BC to mitigate soil acidity and salinity problems. This will also provide new suggestions to readers on how this knowledge can be used to ameliorate acidic and saline soils.
