Abstract:The practical application of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries is seriously hindered by severe lithium polysulfide (LiPS) shuttling and sluggish electrochemical conversions. Herein, the Co9S8/MoS2 heterojunction as a model cathode host material is employed to discuss the performance improvement strategy and elucidate the catalytic mechanism. The introduction of sulfur vacancies can harmonize the chemisorption of the heterojunction component. Also, sulfur vacancies induce the generation of radicals, which participate in a liquidus disproportionated reaction to reduce the accumulation of liquid LiPSs. To assess the conversion efficiency from liquid LiPSs to solid Li2S, a new descriptor calculated from basic cyclic voltammetry curves, nucleation transformation ratio, is proposed.

Abstract:Minimally invasive surgical (MIS) approaches have gained popularity in many surgical fields. Potential advantages to a minimally invasive, spinal intradural approach include decreased operative blood loss, shorter hospitalization, and less post-operative pain. Potential disadvantages include longer operative times, decreased exposure, and difficulty closing the dura. Prior case series from our group and others have demonstrated successful tumor resections using MIS techniques without increased complications. In this 3D video, we demonstrate the key steps in our mini-open, transpinous approach for the resection of an intradural, extramedullary lumbar schwannoma. This operation is performed through a midline incision confined to one or two levels. The spinous process is removed. The paraspinal muscles are spread using a series of sequentially larger tubular dilators, and the first dilator is placed in the space previously occupied by the target level spinous process. The expandable tube retractor is then placed over the largest dilator and docked into place over the target laminae. The expandable tubular retractor is 6 centimeters in depth and 2.5 centimeters in width before expansion and is adjustable to 9 centimeters in depth and 4-5 centimeters in diameter which allows removal of intradural lesions confined to one or two spinal segments. Synergistic Adsorption-Electrocatalysis of 2D/2D Heterostructure Toward High Performance Li-S Batteries

Abstract:The shuttle effect of polysulfides and sluggish reaction kinetics have become current major obstacles for the development of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Herein, a novel 2D/2D heterostructure, consisting of ultrathin Ni-Co MOFs with rich unsaturated metal sites and conductive Ti(3)C2T(x) nanosheets (Ti(3)C2T(x)/Ni-Co MOF), is devel-oped as a multifunctional barrier coated on commercial separators for Li-S batteries. Based on the synergistic adsorption-electrocatalysis, the modified separators not only suppress the dissolution of polysulfides and pro -mote their conversion effectively, but also accelerate the electron/ion transfer. Moreover, density functional theory results further confirm that the heterostructure has strong adsorption energy for polysulfides and low energy barriers for their conversion. Li-S batteries with the Ti(3)C2T(x)/Ni-Co MOF heterostructure modified sep-arators exhibit an excellent reversible capacity of 1260 mAh g(-1) at 0.2C and a remarkable cycling stability with capacity retention of 91.1 % at 0.5C after 350 cycles. When equipped with high sulfur loading of 5.8 mg cm(-2) and low electrolyte/sulfur ratio of 4 uL mg(-1), the cell maintains a superior capacity. This work provides a new route to the design of modified separators for high performance Li-S batteries with especially remarkable cycling stability.
Polymorph Interface Strategy Presents Avenues for Kinetics-Enhanced and Dendrite-Free Lithium Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:Shuttle effect and slow kinetic property are the challenges for the practical application of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. As an effective strategy, the polymorph effect is applied to rationally design multifunctional catalysts. Herein, the unique polymorph interface was constructed by different CoSe2 crystalline phases, and the systematic investigation on the sulfur cathodes and lithium anode is reported. Carbon nanofiber (CNF) derived from bacterial cellulose (BC) is used as a scaffold for disperse CoSe2 catalysts to construct electrically conductive highways. According to the experimental and calculation results, orthorhombic CoSe2 exhibits superior adsorption capacity and catalytic activity towards LiPSs, while cubic CoSe2 shows better electronic conductivity. Mixed phase CoSe2 not only balances the advantages of both, but also showcases impressive performance due to its unique polymorph interface structure. Besides, uniform lithium deposition can be also achieved. Consequently, the modified separators endow Li-S batteries with a high reversible discharge capacity (700 cycles at 1 C with only 0.063 % capacity decay per cycle) and excellent rate performance (702 mAh g(-1) is maintained at 5 C). The pouch cell with separator modifications on both sides was assembled and exhibits a high discharge capacity. This work provides a polymorph interface strategy for the rational design of catalysts.
Conductive and Catalytic Triple‐Phase Interfaces Enabling Uniform Nucleation in High‐Rate Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:Rechargeable lithium-sulfur batteries have attracted tremendous scientific attention owing to their superior energy density. However, the sulfur electrochemistry involves multielectron redox reactions and complicated phase transformations, while the final morphology of solid-phase Li2S precipitates largely dominate the battery's performance. Herein, a triple-phase interface among electrolyte/CoSe2/G is proposed to afford strong chemisorption, high electrical conductivity, and superb electrocatalysis of polysulfide redox reactions in a working lithium-sulfur battery. The triple-phase interface effectively enhances the kinetic behaviors of soluble lithium polysulfides and regulates the uniform nucleation and controllable growth of solid Li2S precipitates at large current density. Therefore, the cell with the CoSe2/G functional separator delivers an ultrahigh rate cycle at 6.0 C with an initial capacity of 916 mAh g(-1) and a capacity retention of 459 mAh g(-1) after 500 cycles, and a stable operation of high sulfur loading electrode (2.69-4.35 mg cm(-2)). This work opens up a new insight into the energy chemistry at interfaces to rationally regulate the electrochemical redox reactions, and also inspires the exploration of related energy storage and conversion systems based on multielectron redox reactions.
Promoting polysulfide conversions via cobalt single-atom catalyst for fast and durable lithium-sulfur batteries

Abstract:Although promising strategies have been developed to resolve the critical drawbacks of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, the intractable issues including undesirable shuttling of polysulfides and sluggish redox reaction kinetics have still been unresolved thoroughly. Herein, a cobalt single-atom (CoSA) catalyst comprising of atomic Co distributed homogeneously within nitrogen (N)-doped porous carbon (Co-NPC) nanosphere is constructed and utilized as a separator coating in Li-S batteries. The Co-NPC exposes abundant active sites participating in sulfur redox reactions, and remarkable catalytic activity boosting the rapid polysulfide conversions. As a result, Li-S batteries with Co-NPC coating layer realize significantly enhanced specific capacity (1295 mAh·g −1 at 0.2 C), rate capability (753 mAh·g −1 at 3.0 C), and long-life cyclic stability (601 mAh·g −1 after 500 cycles at 1.0 C). Increasing the areal sulfur loading to 6.2 mg·cm −2 , an extremely high areal capacity of 7.92 mAh·cm −2 is achieved. Further in situ X-ray diffraction, density functional theory calculations, and secondary ion mass spectrometry confirm the high catalytic capability of CoSA towards reversible polysulfide conversion. This study supplies new insights for adopting single-atom catalyst to upgrade the electrochemical performance of Li-S batteries.

Tuning Dual-Atom Mediator Toward High-Rate Bidirectional Polysulfide Conversion in Li-S Batteries

Abstract:An emerging practice in the realm of Li-S batteries lies in the employment of single-atom catalysts (SACs)as effective mediators to promote polysulfide conversion, but monometallic SACs affording isolated geo-metric dispersion and sole electronic configuration limit the catalytic benefits and curtail the cell performance. Here, we propose a class of dual-atom catalytic moieties comprising hetero- or homo-atomic pairs anchored on N-doped graphene (NG) to unlock the liquid-solid redox puzzle of sulfur, readily realizing Li-S full cell under high-rate-charging conditions. As for Fe-Ni-NG, in-depth experimental and theoretical analysis reveal that the hetero-atomic orbital coupling leads to altered energy levels, unique electronic structures, and varied Fe oxidation states in comparison with homo-atomic structures (Fe-Fe-NG or Ni-Ni-NG). This would weaken the bonding energy of polysulfide intermediates and thus enable facile electrochemical kinetics to gain rapid liquid-solid Li2S4 (sic) Li2S conversion. Encouragingly, a Li-S battery based on the S@Fe-Ni-NG cathode demonstrates unprecedented fast-charging capability, documenting impressive rate performance (542.7 mA h g(-1)at 10.0 C) and favorable cyclic stability (a capacity decay of 0.016% per cycle over 3000cycles at 10.0 C). Synergistic mediation of polysulfide immobilization and conversion by a catalytic and dual-adsorptive system for high performance lithium-sulfur batteries

Abstract:Although various inorganic particles have been confirmed as effective trappers to restrict the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) in lithium-sulfur batteries (LSB), the further reduction of LiPSs is impeded due to their low conductivity. This process results in sluggish redox kinetics at the interface of cathode/electrolyte and escaped LiPSs to electrolytes during long-term cycling. Herein, by advantageous functional integration of immobilization and conversion capability for LiPSs, a 3D aerogel with the composition of @N-doped (@N-C/rGO) is designed and prepared. The dual-shells of N-C and polar CoO enable the strong chemical adsorption towards LiPSs through pyridinic – N-Li-bond and Co···S coordination, respectively. And the conductive Co core acts as a "scissor", which catalyzes the transformation of adsorbed LiPSs into low-order ones, thus accelerating the kinetics of the liquid–solid nucleation and growth of Li2S. Moreover, the matrix of rGO serves as electrical networks, significantly promoting the transfer of electrons to the redox-active sites. Based on these synergetic effects, the LSB using @N-C/rGO modified separators exhibits outstanding electrochemical performance. For example, even at a rate of 1C, the cell still delivers a stable capacity of 555.4 mAh g−1 after 500 cycles for a pure sulfur electrode. Moreover, the relevant kinetic mechanisms including in situ Raman test are expounded in detail.
Modified separators boost polysulfides adsorption-catalysis in lithium-sulfur batteries from Ni@Co hetero-nanocrystals into CNT-porous carbon dual frameworks

Abstract:In this manuscript, nickel/cobalt bimetallic nanocrystals confining into three-dimensional interpenetrating dual-carbon conductive structure (NiCo@C/CNTs) were successfully manufactured by annealing its core-shell structure (Ni-ZIF-67@ZIF-8) precursor under the high temperature. The results presented that the bimetallic nickel and cobalt nanocrystals with superior catalytic activity could quickly convert solid Li 2 S/Li 2 S 2 into soluble LiPSs and effectively decrease the energy barrier. While the hierarchical CNT-porous carbon dual frameworks can provide quick electron/ion transport because of their large specific surface area and the exposure of enough active sites. When used as the separator modifier for lithium sulfur batteries, the battery properties were significantly improved with high specific capacity, outstanding rate capability, and long-term cycle stability. Specifically, its initial specific capacity can achieve to 1038.51 mAh g −1 at 0.5C. At the high rate of 3C, it still delivers satisfactory discharge capacity of 555 mAhg −1 and the capacity decay rate is only 0.065% per cycle after 1000 cycles at 1C. Furthermore, even exposed to heavy sulfur loading (3.61 mg/cm 2 ), they still maintain promising cycle stability. Therefore, such kinds of MOFs derivative with powerful chemical immobilization and catalytic conversion for polysulfides provides a novel guidance for the modification separator and the potential application in the field of high-performance Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Lithium‐sulfur (Li‐S) batteries are one of the most potential new energy storage systems due to their high theoretical capacity and high energy density. However, the application of Li‐S batteries is currently restricted due to the dissolution of polysulfides in the electrolyte, which leads to the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs). Here, we present a Co@MXene‐derived TiO2 heterostructure decorated on carbon sheets derived from folic acid (Co@M‐TiO2/C) as a functional separator coating to trap polysulfide and accelerate redox kinetics in Li‐S batteries. The interconnected porous structure with good electrical conductivity of the heterostructure boasts rapid ion diffusion and efficient electron transfer within the battery. By attaching Co and MXene‐derived dual‐phased TiO2 to two‐dimensional carbon sheets, heterostructures are formed, ensuring complete exposure of the active sites. These heterostructures exhibit catalytic effects on LiPSs and excellent adsorption capabilities, effectively inhibiting the shuttle effect and accelerating the redox kinetics. Considering these advantages, the Li‐S battery with the optimized Co@M‐TiO2/C modified separator demonstrates a high specific capacity of 1481.7 mAh g‐1 at 0.2 C, superior rate performance of 855.5 mAh g‐1 at 2 C, and excellent cycling performance under a high sulfur load of 4.4 mg cm‐2.

Bimetallic sulfides heterostructure efficient adsorption and catalytic of polysulfides for high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries

Abstract:The large-scale commercial application of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries is severely impacted by the sluggish reaction kinetics of polysulfides conversion and the low utilization rate of active substances. It has been proved that the introduction of functional interlayers between electrodes is an effective method to inhibit the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs). Herein, FeS2-MnS heterostructure is combined with carbon materials and applied to Li-S batteries through the modifying commercial separator to accelerate the redox kinetics of LiPSs. The FeS2-MnS/C//PP modified separators achieve the chemical catalysis, adsorption, and physical confinement of LiPSs through well-dispersed FeS2-MnS heterostructure and carbon materials. Compared with single-metal sulfides, the FeS2-MnS heterostructure can considerably enhance the catalysis interface effect, rapidly adsorb and promote the conversion of LiPSs. As a result, the cell with FeS2-MnS/C//PP separator displays remarkable cyclic stability (768 mAh/g at 1.0C after 500cycles with a low capacity decay of merely 0.036% per cycle) and outstanding rate capacity (660 mAh/g at 5.0C). This work provides a reference for the use of heterostructure materials as separator modifiers for Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Battery technologies involving Li-S chemistry are promising approaches to realize inexpensive and high energy density storage for sustainable energy applications. However, current Li-S batteries still suffer from short life-time due to active material loss through the soluble polysulfide molecules shuttling between battery cathode and anode.[1] We present herein our recent advances in the understanding of the electrochemical reactions at Li-S battery cathode and addressing the shuttle effect by polysulfide trapping. Specifically, an in-operando characterization technique based on optical microscopy is developed to intuitively visualize the selective deposition of sulfur and Li2S in battery cathodes, and the critical roles of current collectors and additives, including different metals and semiconductors, are demonstrated. Accordingly, innovative cathode architectures are designed to control the oriented deposition and diffusion of sulfur-containing species. In particular, an ultrathin and compact blocking layer of 2D MoS2 and WS2 nanoflakes, with a thickness of ca. 15 nm, are deposited on separator through a solution based self-assembly method,[2] which effectively adsorb polysulfide molecules and thus suppress their diffusion to the battery anode. In addition, Li2S-metal composites and polymer-metal hybrid networks are fabricated as hosts for sulfur cathodes to enable rapid battery charge-discharge processes given the large active surface area and better control of charge (or discharge) product deposition.[3] Combining these two strategies, we report greatly enhanced specific capacity (over 1200 mAh g-1) and cyclability (over 500 cycles) for the nanostructured sulfur cathodes compared to the conventional carbon-sulfur based cathode, and the routes to further improving high-energy and long-life Li-S battery are discussed. Catalytic Boosting Bidirectional Polysulfide Redox using Co 0.85 Se/C Hollow Structure for High‐Performance Lithium‐Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:Achieving effective adsorption and fast conversion of soluble polysulfides confined in the sulfur cathode is critical yet challenging for building high‐performance lithium‐sulfur batteries. Herein, we construct a unique hollow‐structured Co0.85Se/C as a separator modifier (CSPP) to effectively suppress the polysulfide shuttle effect. The Co0.85Se/C demonstrates strong anchoring with polysulfide species and smooth bidirectional electrocatalysis. The unique mesoporous hollow architecture affords sufficient catalytic sites and Li+ diffusion channels for promoting the reaction kinetics. Benefiting from the merits, the CSPP‐cell could yield a superior electrochemical utilization of active sulfur, excellent rate capability (679 mAh g−1 at 5 C), and stable cycling performance with an ultralow fading rate of 0.056 % per cycle over 500 cycles. The work highlights great promise of developing cobalt‐based materials as kinetic regulators for highly stable lithium‐sulfur batteries. Coming from both sides: A unique hollow‐structured Co0.85Se/C material is demonstrated as an excellent bidirectional electrocatalyst to effectively suppress the polysulfide shuttle effect and kinetically promote the sulfur redox electrochemistry. The Co0.85Se/C enables the sulfur cathode to show very good specific capacity, excellent rate capability, and stable cycling performance.

Promoting Reversible Redox Kinetics by Separator Architectures Based on CoS 2 /HPGC Interlayer as Efficient Polysulfide‐Trapping Shield for Li–S Batteries

Abstract:Main obstacles from the shuttle effect and slow conversion rate of soluble polysulfide compromise the sulfur utilization and cycling life for lithium sulfur (Li–S) batteries. In pursuit of a practically viable high performance Li–S battery, a separator configuration (CoS2/HPGC/interlayer) as efficient polysulfide trapping barrier is reported. This configuration endows great advantages, particularly enhanced conductivity, promoted polysulfide trapping capability, accelerated sulfur electrochemistry, when using the functional interlayer for Li–S cells. Attributed to the above merits, such cell shows excellent cyclability, with a capacity of 846 mAh g−1 after 250 cycles corresponding to a high capacity retention of 80.2% at 0.2 C, and 519 mAh g−1 after 500 cycles at 1C (1C = 1675 mA g−1). In addition, the optimized separator exhibits a high initial areal capacity of 4.293 mAh cm−2 at 0.1C. Moreover, with CoS2/HPGC/interlayer, the sulfur cell enables a low self‐discharge rate with a very high capacity retention of 97.1%. This work presents a structural engineering of the separator toward suppressing the dissolution of soluble Li2Sn moieties and simultaneously promoting the sulfur conversion kinetics, thus achieving durable and high capacity Li–S batteries.

Abstract:One crucial problem hindering the commercial application of lithium-sulfur batteries with high theoretical specific energy is the ceaseless shuttle of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) between cathodes and anodes, which usually leads to rapid capacity fade and serious self-discharge issues. Herein, a unique bilayer coating strategy designed to modify the polypropylene separator was developed in this study, which consisted of a bottom zeolite (SSZ-13) layer serving as a LiPS movement barrier and a top ZnS layer used for accelerating redox processes of LiPSs. Benefiting from the synergetic effect, the bilayer-modified separator offers absolute block capability to LiPS diffusion, moreover, significant catalysis effect on sulfur species conversion, as well as outstanding lithium-ion (Li+) conductivity, excellent electrolyte wettability, and desirable mechanical properties. Consequently, the assembled lithium-sulfur cell with the SSZ-13/ZnS@polypropylene separator demonstrates excellent cycle stability and rate capability, showcasing a capacity decay rate of only 0.052% per cycle at 1 C over 500 cycles.
Achieving physical blocking and chemical electrocatalysis of polysulfides by using a separator coating layer in lithium–sulfur batteries

Abstract:The persistent challenges in slow redox reaction kinetics and the consequential issue of polysulfide shuttling still restrict the practical utilization of lithium-sulfur (Li–S) batteries. To address these problems, we present a meticulously designed separator coating layer composed of a hierarchical porous carbon framework decorated with FeS 2 (FeS 2 /PCF). This innovative architecture enables simultaneous physical blockade of polysulfide diffusion and chemical electrocatalysis of polysulfide conversions. Polysulfide diffusion tests were conducted and the results demonstrate that PCF effectively hinders the polysulfide penetration and shuttling. Additionally, FeS 2 with excellent electrocatalytic activity expedites the polysulfide transformation, as evidenced by secondary ion mass spectroscopy. Consequently, the modified Li–S batteries exhibit exceptional rate capability of 764 mA h g −1 at 5.0 C, and outstanding long-term cyclic stability with sustaining 698 mA h g −1 after 500 cycles at 1.0 C. Notably, the Li–S batteries achieve an impressive areal capacity of 7.52 mA h cm −2 , while maintaining stable cyclic performances across a wide temperature range. This investigation offers valuable insights into the effective utilization of separator coating layers by employing both physical and chemical strategies.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur batteries (LiSBs) with high energy density still face challenges on sluggish conversion kinetics, severe shuttle effects of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), and low blocking feature of ordinary separators to LiPSs. To tackle these, a novel double-layer strategy to functionalize separators is proposed, which consists of Co with atomically dispersed CoN4 decorated on Ketjen black (Co/CoN4@KB) layer and an ultrathin 2D Ti3C2Tx MXene layer. The theoretical calculations and experimental results jointly demonstrate metallic Co sites provide efficient adsorption and catalytic capability for long-chain LiPSs, while CoN4 active sites facilitate the absorption of short-chain LiPSs and promote the conversion to Li2S. The stacking MXene layer serves as a microscopic barrier to further physically block and chemically anchor leaked LiPSs from the pores and gaps of the Co/CoN4@KB layer, thus preserving LiPSs within efficient anchoring-conversion reaction interfaces to balance the accumulation of "dead S" and Li2S. Consequently, with an ultralight loading of Co/CoN4@KB-MXene, the LiSBs exhibit amazing electrochemical performance even under high sulfur loading and lean electrolyte, and the outperforming performance for lithium-selenium batteries (LiSeBs) can also be achieved. This work exploits a universal and effective strategy of a double-layer functionalized separator to regulate the equilibrium adsorption-catalytic interface, enabling high-energy and long-cycle LiSBs/LiSeBs.

Abstract:The shuttling of long-chain LiPSs (Li2Sn, 4 ≤ n ≤ 8) and the sluggish conversion from Li2S4 to Li2S represent two primary challenges hindering the fast multi-step transformations of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Here, we propose a bidirectional tandem catalytic strategy to promote polysulfide conversions. A novel nanostructured catalyst consisting of hollow bimetallic selenide (ZnSe/SnSe2) cubes with dual-active centers, heterogeneous interfaces and selenium-rich vacancies was synthesized. Experimental and theoretical calculations confirmed that ZnSe and SnSe2 selectively reduced the thermodynamic transition energy barrier of S8→Li2S4 and Li2S4→Li2S to achieve baton-relay-like conversion of polysulfides. Moreover, the synergistic effect of ZnSe and SnSe2 significantly reduced the activation barrier of Li2S reoxidation during the charging process, and achieved an efficient bidirectional catalytic conversion. In situ Raman analysis confirmed that ZnSe/SnSe2 effectively inhibited the shuttle effect. As a result, a battery with ZnSe/SnSe2 interlayer delivered high specific capacity of 1269.5 mAh g−1 at 0.2 C, and excellent rate capability (680.4 mAh g−1 at 4 C). Remarkably, the battery maintained cycling stability with only 0.086% capacity degradation per cycle after 500 cycles at 2 C. This work provides a new path for designing electrocatalyst towards precise control of catalytic processes in Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are regarded as one of the promising advanced energy storage systems due to their ultrahigh capacity and energy density. However, their practical applications are still hindered by the serious shuttle effect and sluggish reaction kinetics of soluble lithium polysulfides. Herein, g-C3N4 nanosheets and graphene decorated with an ultrafine Co-species nanodot heterostructure (Co@g-C3N4/G) as separator coatings were designed following a facile approach. Such an interlayer can not only enable effective polysulfide affinity through the physical barrier and chemical binding but also simultaneously have a catalytic effect on polysulfide conversion. Because of these superior merits, the Li-S cells assembled with Co@g-C3N4/G-PP separators matched with the S/KB composites (up to ~70 wt% sulfur in the final cathode) exhibit excellent rate capability and good cyclic stability. A high specific capacity of ~860 mAh g−1 at 2.0 C as well as a capacity-fading rate of only ~0.035% per cycle over 350 cycles at 0.5 C can be achieved. This bifunctional separator can even endow a Li-S cell at a low current density to exhibit excellent cycling capability, with a capacity retention rate of ~88.4% at 0.2 C over 250 cycles. Furthermore, a Li-S cell with a Co@g-C3N4/G-PP separator possesses a stable specific capacity of 785 mAh g−1 at 0.2 C after 150 cycles and a superior capacity retention rate of ~84.6% with a high sulfur loading of ~3.0 mg cm−2. This effective polysulfide-confined separator holds good promise for promoting the further development of high-energy-density Li-S batteries.

Abstract:The lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is considered as a promising battery chemistry for next-generation energy storage on the merits of low cost and high energy density. However, the sluggish redox kinetics and shuttling effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), especially at high sulfur loading, result in low sulfur utilization, low Coulombic efficiency, and short cycle life. Herein, an entangled N-doped carbon nanotube array with encapsulated Co nanoparticles has been constructed and used as an efficient host for sulfur cathode featuring both physical and chemical trapping ability for soluble LiPSs. Besides, the encapsulated Co nanoparticles combined with N species can accelerate polysulfides redox, which has been proved by electrochemical analysis, in situ spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations. The effective confinement and fast conversion of polysulfides ensure the Li-S battery with a high capacity of 1045 mAh g(-1) at 1 C rate and 77.89% capacity retention even after 1000 cycles, and these advantages can even be extended to sulfur loading as high as 15 mg cm(-2). More significantly, a pouch cell assembled with the composite sulfur cathode can deliver a stable cycling for more than 150 cycles, further demonstrating the great potential of Li-S batteries for practical applications.
