Abstract:Against the backdrop of escalating environmental pollution and resource depletion induced by traditional agricultural industry development, the imperative for agricultural efficiency and ecologically friendly practices has become pivotal for global agricultural sustainability. In the digital era, rural digitalization has substantially amplified agricultural production efficiency while notably reducing environmental pollution. This study is based on panel data from 1602 counties in China spanning from 2011 to 2020, measuring the levels of rural digitalization and agricultural green total factor productivity (AGTFP) across these counties, empirically examining their dynamic correlation. The research findings reveal: (1) A significant enhancement of AGTFP with the elevation of rural digitalization; for every 1 % increase in rural digitalization, AGTFP increases by 1.78 %. Robustness checks, including instrumental variables and quasi-natural experiments, affirm the validity of these conclusions. Furthermore, by comparing regional differences in China, it can be observed that the impact of rural digitalization on AGTFP varies across different areas: in the eastern, central, and western regions, for every 1 % increase in rural digitalization, the AGTFP increases by 2.65 %, 1.53 %, and 0.82 %, respectively. (2) Rural digitalization fosters an increase in AGTFP by stimulating rural entrepreneurial activity, with the mediation effect of rural entrepreneurial activity accounting for 3.34 % of the total effect. (3) Utilizing a threshold model, observations indicate that when rural digitalization surpasses the first threshold of 0.3200, the AGTFP coefficient escalates from 0.0462 to 0.7519. However, when rural digitalization exceeds the second threshold of 0.7118, this coefficient declines to 0.2429, signifying a nonlinear trend in the marginal effect of rural digitalization on AGTFP-initial enhancement followed by attenuation. (4) In the spatial model analysis, the study confirms spatial spillover effects of rural digitalization on AGTFP, indicating variations in spatial effects among different matrices. However, the indirect effects of rural digitalization on AGTFP, mainly influenced by the neighboring counties' digitalization levels, contribute more significantly than the direct effects. Based on these conclusions, this paper proposes augmenting investments in rural digitalization, implementing diversified rural digitalization schemes, invigorating rural entrepreneurial activity, and harmonizing regional digital development as novel approaches to enhance AGTFP, thereby fostering rural economic development.

Abstract:This article measures carbon emissions and digital agriculture in 30 provinces and cities in China from 2011 to 2020, and empirically analyzes their influencing factors. The results indicate that the total carbon emissions and the overall level of digital agriculture development in China are showing an increasing trend; Under different quantiles, the impact of population size and digital agriculture development level on inter provincial carbon emissions decreases, the impact of industrial upgrading level first decreases and then increases, and the impact of economic development level and greening level increases; The population size will promote the rise of carbon emissions in the local area and suppress carbon emissions in neighboring areas, the level of economic development will promote the rise of carbon emissions in the local and neighboring areas, the level of digital agriculture development will suppress the rise of carbon emissions in the local area, and the level of industrial upgrading and greening will suppress the rise of carbon emissions in the local and neighboring areas. Therefore, it is recommended to promote China's accelerated progress towards carbon neutrality goals through rational allocation of energy elements, enhancement of ecosystem carbon absorption capacity, and vigorous development of digital agriculture.

Abstract:As the world's biggest emitter of carbon, China's agricultural carbon emissions account for 16 to 17%, with agriculture being the second largest contributor to carbon emissions. The development of the digital economy has brought profound changes to agricultural ecology. Therefore, we utilize China's data experience to construct an agricultural ecological transformation system by setting up a Super-SBM model. Then, based on a dynamic panel threshold model, we explore the nonlinear impact mechanism of the digital economy on agricultural ecological transformation from a low-carbon innovation perspective. Our results reveal that the overall level of China's agricultural ecological transformation is not high, but in the long-term posture, it represents a relatively steady upward trend, with a significant "wealth gap" between different regions. It is worth noting that there is a significant threshold effect of low-carbon innovation heterogeneity in the impact mechanism of digital economy on agricultural ecological transformation: under lower low-carbon innovation levels, the development of digital economy is unable to effectively promote agricultural ecological transformation. However, as the level of low-carbon technological innovation increases and exceeds the critical value, it stimulates the driving effect of digital economy to some extent, thereby promoting the improvement of agricultural ecological transformation, presenting a "U" shaped relationship. The paper has clarified the differential "new phenomena" in the process of promoting agricultural ecological transformation, providing new insights for achieving "carbon reduction and economic promotion" in developing countries.

Abstract:This paper attempts to explore the overall impact of its rural digitization process on agricultural carbon emissions and non-point source pollution in the context of China. By doing so, we analyze whether digitization has an impact on agricultural pollution reduction, analyze its conductive mechanism, and draw its policy implications. To this end, the paper innovatively incorporates new digital infrastructure and urbanization level into of the concept of agricultural eco-efficiency (AEE) and adopts the SBM-DEA model, entropy weighting method, and mixed regression to analyze, based on the sample data of the 30 provinces of China from 2011 to 2020. The results indicate that: (1) new digital infrastructure has a significant contribution to the improvement of AEE of China; (2) both information infrastructure and integration infrastructure have a significant positive effect on AEE, and the effect of information infrastructure is more effective, but there is an inverted "U"-shaped relationship between innovation infrastructure and AEE level; (3) the moderating effect mechanism suggests that the level of urbanization reinforces the contribution of new digital infrastructure to AEE; and (4) the heterogeneity test shows that the effect of new digital infrastructure on AEE is more significant in regions with well-developed traditional transportation facilities and in periods when the government pays more attention to agricultural ecological issues. The above results also provide rich insights for China and other similar developing countries on how to balance the agriculture digitization and AEE.

An Exploration of the Relationship Between Digital Village Construction and Agroecological Efficiency in China

Abstract:Whether digital village construction can effectively promote agriculture's green development is essential for modernizing agriculture and rural areas. Using panel data from 30 provinces in China between 2011 and 2022, this study empirically examines the relationship between digital village construction and agroecological efficiency and explores its mechanism of action and threshold effect, contributing to the exploration of agricultural digitization and sustainable development. This study shows that (1) AEE is positively associated with digital village construction; (2) the positive association size varies in regions and construction levels; (3) agricultural land transfer and technological innovation play a mediating role in the positive effect; and (4) there is a single threshold value for the positive effect of digital village construction, and after crossing the threshold value, its marginal effect shows a positive and increasing nonlinear characteristic. This study enhances our comprehension of digital village development to advance agroecological efficiency and offers theoretical insights and policy recommendations for optimizing the rural digital infrastructure and fostering sustainable agricultural growth.

Abstract:The digital economy is an important engine for China's economic and social development, accelerating the development of agricultural digitization and promoting the integration of agricultural digitization. Low-carbon production is an inevitable trend in China's current economic development. The article takes 30 provinces (cities and districts) in China as research objects, constructing and measuring indicators of digitization level and carbon emission intensity of agricultural production from 2006 to 2018. It classifies agricultural production into planting and animal husbandry and uses a basic regression model to study their dynamic relationships. A mediating effect model is used to explore the specific mechanism path of the digital economy affecting carbon emission intensity, and a regional heterogeneity analysis is conducted. The study found that: (1) The level of digitalization can significantly reduce the carbon intensity of agricultural production; (2) Digitalization can reduce China's carbon intensity by promoting the level of agricultural technological inputs, the level of human capital and the urbanization rate. (3) There are regional and sectoral differences in the impact of digitization on the carbon intensity of agricultural production. The impact on the plantation sector is greater than that on the livestock sector, and the carbon reduction effect is slightly greater in the central and western regions than in the eastern regions.

Abstract:China is the largest carbon emitter in the world, with agricultural carbon emissions accounting for 17% of China’s total carbon emissions. Agricultural carbon emission reduction has become the key to achieving the “Double Carbon” goal. At the same time, the role of the digital economy in achieving the “dual carbon” goal cannot be ignored as an important engine to boost the high-quality development of China’s economy. Therefore, this paper uses the panel data of 30 provinces in mainland China from 2011 to 2019 to construct a spatial Durbin model and a mediation effect model to explore the impact of the digital economy on agricultural carbon intensity and the mediating role of agricultural technological progress. The research results show that: (1) China’s agricultural carbon intensity fluctuated and declined during the study period, but the current agricultural carbon intensity is still at a high level; (2) The inhibitory effect of the digital economy on agricultural carbon intensity is achieved by promoting agricultural technological progress, and the intermediary role of agricultural technological progress has been verified; (3) The digital economy can significantly reduce the carbon intensity of agriculture, and this inhibition has a positive spatial spillover effect. According to the research conclusions, the government should speed up the development of internet technology and digital inclusive finance, support agricultural technology research and improve farmers’ human capital, and strengthen regional cooperation to release the contribution of digital economy space.

Abstract:Rapid advancement of the rural digital economy has intensified the demand for leveraging digital tools to foster low-carbon and sustainable agricultural practices, garnering widespread academic and bureaucratic attention. Understanding how the rural digital economy influences agricultural carbon emissions is crucial for unlocking emission reduction potential, facilitating a transition towards sustainable energy usage in rural areas, and nurturing green agricultural development. In this study, we employ the entropy method, a spatial Durbin model, and a panel threshold model to assess the impact of the rural digital economy on agricultural carbon emissions across each province in China from 2010 to 2022. Additionally, we delve into the mechanism through which the rural digital economy facilitates agricultural carbon reduction, particularly in terms of "agricultural socialized services". Our findings reveal several key insights. Firstly, the rural digital economy contributes significantly to reducing agricultural carbon emission intensity. Secondly, there is a non-linear relationship between the rural digital economy and agricultural carbon emissions. With the development of rural digital economy showing a marginal decreasing trend, there is an obvious threshold effect. Thirdly, enhancing agricultural socialized services through the rural digital economy can curb agricultural carbon emissions. Lastly, the carbon reduction effect of the rural digital economy is more significant in more economically developed areas, areas with moderate levels of economic development, and areas with low technological investment; implementation of a "zero growth" policy for fertilizers strengthens this carbon reduction effect. This study sheds light on the mechanisms and effects of agricultural carbon emissions, offering quantitative evidence and theoretical support for the transition towards low-carbon and sustainable agricultural development.

Abstract:Digital agriculture serves as a pivotal means of ushering in innovative agricultural practices and achieving sustainable agricultural development. Although agricultural digitalization has received increasing attention, the unbalanced development and regional disparities of digital agriculture are still key obstacles to sustainable agricultural development. Based on the data of 31 provinces in China from 2013 to 2021, this study evaluates the development level of digital agriculture in China, and further analyzes the distribution pattern, spatial characteristics, and transition probabilities of digital agriculture from a regional perspective. The index system of the digital agriculture development level is constructed from five aspects: infrastructure, talent resources, agricultural informatization, the digitization of agricultural production processes, and agricultural production efficiency. Among these, infrastructure and talent resources reflect the resources needed for the development of digital agriculture; agricultural informatization and the digitization of the agricultural production process indicate the role of digitization in the process of agricultural development; and the agricultural production efficiency is the goal of the digital agriculture development, which is a critical criteria of its evaluation. The weighted analysis method of objective sequential analysis, which combines the dynamic level of indicators and sequential relationships, is used to assign weights to the indicators. In addition, to address the regional disparities in the development level of digital agriculture, kernel density estimation, Moran's index, and (spatial) Markov chain analysis are applied to analyze the spatial dynamic evolution of digital agriculture in China. The findings reveal substantial regional disparities in digital agriculture development within China, particularly in the Western region, where development lags behind. Moreover, this study offers actionable policy recommendations for policymakers to strengthen regional infrastructure and talent cultivation, as well as other aspects of digital agriculture development, to mitigate regional differences and provide reference for other emerging countries.

Abstract:The digital economy, closely linked to agricultural progress, plays a key role in reducing agricultural carbon emissions. By utilizing panel data between 2011 and 2021 from 30 Chinese provincial-level regions, the present work empirically assesses the direct impact and nonlinear spatial spillover effects of the digital economy on agricultural carbon emissions, where methodologies including fixed effects, threshold models, and spatial econometrics are employed. The results were as follows: (1) The digital economy led to remarkable inhibition of agricultural carbon emissions, which was consistent across various robustness checks. (2) The carbon reduction efficiency of the digital economy presented obvious spatial variation, which had a greater negative effect in eastern regions and major grain-producing regions. (3) The digital economy had a nonlinear impact on agricultural carbon emissions, and technological innovation played a threshold effect, showing an "inverted U-shaped" characteristic of increasing first and then decreasing overall. (4) This emission abatement effect also showed a significant spatial spillover aspect, meaning that the digital economy development in one area prominently abates agricultural carbon emissions in adjacent provinces. Our findings might provide a theoretical and empirical foundation for comprehending and addressing agricultural carbon emissions abatement in China from the digital economy perspective.

Abstract:The integration of the digital economy with rural development is of great significance as it plays a pivotal role in mitigating carbon emissions and environmental pollution in agriculture, thereby contributing to the evolution of agriculture in a green and sustainable manner. This study aims to examine the impact and mechanisms of rural digital economy development (RDED) on agricultural eco-efficiency (AEE). Specifically, based on provincial-level panel data from China spanning from 2011 to 2021, we evaluate China’s AEE by employing the super-efficiency slacks-based measure (Super SBM) model, taking into account the positive externality of agricultural carbon sinks. Then we analyze the impact and mechanisms of RDED on AEE using the two-way fixed effects model. The findings indicate that: (1) RDED significantly promotes AEE, and this conclusion remains robust even after being tested by replacing the explained variable, altering the sample interval, and including more control variables; (2) RDED can significantly drive AEE in the midwestern regions of China, but the promotion effect on the eastern region has not been fully demonstrated. Additionally, the promotion effect in southern China is greater than that in northern China; (3) agricultural science and technology investment partially mediates the impact of RDED on AEE. Moreover, agricultural science and technology innovation has a positive moderating effect on the relationship between RDED and AEE. Lastly, this study provides new evidence and policy recommendations for developing countries, such as China, to proactively facilitate the coordinated development of the rural digital economy and agricultural ecology, and attain green and sustainable ecological agriculture.

Abstract:Abstract This paper first analyzes and researches the current practice status of digital transformation of Chinese agricultural production from production, credit, and management aspects. Then, it analyzes the measurement of agricultural production efficiency and the factors influencing agricultural production efficiency in the context of digital transformation by using DEA measurement tools. The impact of digitalization level enhancement on rural economic structure is also analyzed and explained from the perspective of technological progress bias through spatial econometric models. The results show that the level of digitalization promotes the development of agricultural modernization in terms of the change in the ranking of scores between 2014 and 2023. The correlation coefficients of the level of digital economy development, financial support for agriculture, and urbanization rate are 0.483, 1.163, and 0.764, which significantly promote the efficiency of agricultural production in China. There is a significant spatial dependence relationship between economic structure and digital transformation (P<0.001).

Abstract:A major driving force behind China’s low-carbon, environmentally friendly development of agriculture and the accomplishment of the “dual-carbon” goal is the digital transformation of rural areas. In this study, on the basis of clarifying the degree of rural digitization and agricultural carbon emissions efficiency in China from 2010 to 2021, the degree of coupled coordination and the spatiotemporal pattern characteristics between the two are examined using the coupled coordination model. Then, the influencing factors are analyzed in depth using the spatial Durbin model. Our findings reveal that, first, in terms of the degree of rural digitization, the index increases overall and the spatial imbalance is obvious, with a spatial distribution pattern of “high in the east and low in the west”. Regarding the efficiency of agricultural carbon emissions, there is an overall “N-shaped” change, which is mainly influenced by technological progress in agricultural production, and the regional annual averages are, in descending order, the Western, Eastern, Northeastern, and Central regions, with obvious regional differences. Second, the coupling coordination index shows a fluctuating upward trend, from “extreme disorder” to “high-level coordination”. Furthermore, there are obvious regional characteristics. The regional growth rates are, in descending order, the Western, Eastern, Central, and Northeastern regions. Third, coupling coordination is jointly influenced by a variety of factors, including government input, educational level, industrial structure, energy use, urbanization rate, living standards, driving temporal patterns, and regional differences. This study not only helps to clarify the relationship between the two, offering a reference for the realization of the “dual-carbon” goal, but also broadens the concepts of the low-carbon and environmentally friendly development of agriculture.

With the rapid rise of the digital economy, its influence is gradually spreading from urban to rural areas, and it has played a significant and far-reaching role in promoting the green transformation of agriculture. This paper employs the entropy weight method to measure the level of digital economy and agricultural green development in rural areas in 30 provincial administrative regions in China from 2012 to 2021 and analyzes the relationship between the two and the mechanisms behind it. The research results show that (1) the rural digital economy significantly promotes agricultural green development. (2) With the enhancement of agricultural green development, the impact of the rural digital economy on it initially increases and then declines. (3) The rural digital economy fosters agricultural green development by advancing agricultural technology, easing credit constraints, and promoting agricultural industry agglomeration. (4) Environmental regulation intensifies the positive influence of the rural digital economy on agricultural green development. This research significantly enhances our understanding of the mechanism by which the rural digital economy facilitates agricultural green development. It offers empirical evidence and recommendations for the government to formulate and implement effective policies to advance agricultural green transformation in the context of digital economy trends.

Abstract:In recent years, the digital economy has shown great potential in regard to in driving social production and development. In the context of the construction of digital villages, the deep integration of the digital economy and agricultural development has injected new vitality into improving the quality and efficiency of agricultural production, becoming an important way to promote sustainable agricultural development. Based on the panel data of 31 provinces in China from 2012 to 2021, the study utilizes the entropy method to measure the level of the digital economy and the high-quality development of agriculture. Additionally, this study explores the impact and mechanism of the digital economy on the high-quality development of agriculture by the fixed effect, mediation effect, and the spatial spillover models. In summary, the digital economy can significantly drive the high-quality development of agriculture, which is still valid after considering endogeneity and robustness. Mechanistically, the rationalization of industrial structure is an important path for the digital economy in regard to driving the high-quality development of agriculture. Regionally, the dividends of the digital economy for high-quality agricultural development in the central and western regions are greater than those in the eastern region. Spatially, the digital economy has a spatial spillover effect on the high-quality development of agriculture. Moreover, it can promote the synergistic development of adjoining regions. Therefore, policy recommendations are made in terms of strengthening rural infrastructure, emphasizing the development of regional shortcomings, and strengthening internal with external regional linkages.

Does Digital Transformation Promote Agricultural Carbon Productivity in China?

Abstract:Against the background of global climate change and the rapid rise of the digital economy, the digital transformation of agriculture is profoundly changing the agricultural production and operation mode with the help of digital technology, becoming a new driving force for low-carbon and sustainable development of agriculture. However, previous studies rarely examined the impact of agricultural digital transformation on agricultural low-carbon transformation from the perspective of carbon productivity. To fill this gap, this study attempts to build a theoretical analysis framework for the impact of agricultural digital transformation on agricultural carbon productivity (ACP). By using a set of panel data from 30 provinces (cities) in China from 2011 to 2019, this study explores the impact of agricultural digital transformation on ACP, as well as its conduction mechanism and the non-linear mechanism. Empirical results show that the transformation of agricultural digitalization is conducive to the promotion of ACP. A series of robustness analyses support this conclusion. The main transmission mechanisms for digital transformation to affect ACP include agricultural industrial structure upgrading, and the agricultural scale operation. In addition, with the improvement of urbanization level and rural human capital, the impact of agricultural digital transformation on ACP presents a "U" type non-linear feature of inhibition first and promotion later. Furtherly, heterogeneity analysis shows that the impact of digital transformation on ACP will vary greatly depending on the levels of ACP, the geographical location of the studied area and whether it is a main grain-producing area. This study provides a theoretical and empirical basis for the improvement of China's agricultural carbon productivity from the perspective of the digital economy.

Abstract:With the rapid development of digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data and cloud computing, China's agricultural production is entering a new era characterized by digitalization. Based on provincial panel data of China from 2013 to 2020, this paper adopts the system GMM and mediating effects model to systematically examine the impact of digitalization on low-carbon agricultural production from the perspective of resource misallocation. The results indicate that digitalization can significantly curb agricultural carbon emissions and thus promote low-carbon agricultural production, and this finding still holds after the robustness test. The heterogeneity analysis indicates that the inhibiting effect of digitalization on agricultural carbon emissions is most pronounced in the eastern region relative to the central and western regions (the regression coefficients are −0.400 and −0.126 respectively). Further mechanism analysis suggests that digitalization can reduce agricultural carbon emissions by correcting the widespread capital and labor misallocation in agricultural factor markets. The findings of this study provide significant policy implications for low-carbon agricultural production in China.

Abstract:Under the dual carbon goals, it has become an urgent practical issue to enhance the efficiency of agricultural product circulation while reducing environmental damage. This paper first constructs a theoretical model to analyze the relationship between the digital economy, green technological innovation, and agricultural product circulation efficiency. Based on panel data from 29 provinces in China (excluding Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, Tibet, and Hainan) from 2015 to 2021, this study utilizes a two-way fixed-effects model and a threshold regression model to analyze the impact of the digital economy on agricultural product circulation efficiency. Meanwhile, the mediating role of green technological innovation is explored in-depth through a mediating effect model. The results indicate that regional heterogeneity exists at the development level of the digital economy and in the efficiency of agricultural product circulation. The digital economy can significantly enhance the efficiency of agricultural product circulation, and green technological innovation plays a mediating role in this process. The impact of the digital economy on agricultural product circulation efficiency exhibits a dual threshold effect, where the promotion effect weakens after crossing two threshold values. Finally, this paper proposes countermeasures based on regional development status, including strengthening the application of the digital economy in agricultural product circulation, promoting green technological innovation, and reducing the thresholds for digital economy development.

The impact of rural digitization on agricultural carbon emissions and its mechanism pathways

Abstract:This paper utilizes provincial macro data from 2011 to 2020 to thoroughly investigate the impact of rural digitization on agricultural carbon emissions. The research findings reveal that rural digitization significantly reduces agricultural carbon emissions, a conclusion confirmed through robustness and endogeneity tests. Using a "technology effect-knowledge effect" logical framework, it is found that agricultural technological advancements and rural human capital act as intermediary pathways. These advancements indirectly achieve carbon reduction by promoting agricultural technological progress and enhancing rural human capital levels. Heterogeneity tests indicate that the "carbon reduction effect" is most significant in eastern regions, while it is weakest in the western regions due to disparities in rural digitization levels. Additionally, the study uncovers a significant spatial correlation and spillover effect between rural digitization and agricultural carbon emissions, implying that rural digitization in one region can notably reduce carbon emissions in surrounding areas. Consequently, it is recommended to further improve rural digitization development levels, fully leverage the benefits of digital advancements, and provide impetus for sustainable agricultural development.
