Abstract:Catalytic ceramic nanofiber membrane (C-CNM) filtration coupled with catalytic ozonation process was applied for the removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in various water matrix. The C-CNM was made from attapulgite (APT) nanofibers with Mn2O3 nanoparticles anchored on the pits of APT. Up to 89% of SMX was degraded constantly during a 1-h continuous catalytic filtration with the experimental conditions (water flux = 20 LMH, [SMX]0 = 20 mg/L, [O3 (aq)]inf = 10.5 mg/L). The effects of permeate flux, membrane layer thickness, and the presence of co-existing ions and HA on the degradation efficiency of SMX by C-CNM filtration coupled with catalytic ozonation were studied. The results shows that the degradation of SMX occurred primarily in the membrane layer and the SMX removal increased with smaller fluxes and thicker membrane layer. Besides, the presence of Cl- and H2PO4- ions obviously inhibited SMX removal while the presence of HCO3- slightly enhanced SMX removal. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) that contributed to the removal of SMX were identified to be 1O2, .OH and O2c-by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis and quenching experiments. More importantly, C-CNM/ozone filtration system demonstrated wide applicability for the treatment of a variety of emerging organic contaminants and high removal efficiency of SMX even in real waters. This work promotes the engineering application of catalytic ceramic membrane coupling with advanced oxidation in the decontamination of emerging organic contaminants from water and wastewater.

Abstract:Membrane-based catalytic ozonation has recently attracted significant attention for its simultaneous boosted contaminant degradation and separation. In this work, catalytic ceramic nanofiber membranes ((MnFe0.05) @CNM) with MnFe dual-active site are prepared by anchoring FeOx nanoparticles onto Mn@CNM via an impregnation and in-situ precipitation method. The (MnFe0.05)@CNM coupled with catalytic ozonation was applied to the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX), achieving a removal rate of up to 99.2 %. The catalytic degradation of SMX is verified by reactive oxygen species (ROS) quenching and EPR detection experiments, which shows that the 1O2, & sdot;OH and O2 & sdot;- are involved. Furthermore, (MnFe0.05)@CNM demonstrates superior catalytic stability, redox properties, and an abundance of acidic sites, as are revealed by H2-TPR and NH3-TPD analysis. The boosted performance is attributed to the synergistic catalysis by Mn and Fe bimetals under nanoconfinement effect of membrane pores through facilitated electron transfer between Mn2+, Mn3+, Mn4+, Fe2+, and Fe3+, and promoting the decomposition of ozone and the generation of ROS. The nano-confinement effect of (MnFe0.05)@CNM also reduces the mass transfer distance between ROS and SMX, promoting ROS to attack the SMX molecules. This study presents a novel approach to developing catalytic ceramic membranes for the enhanced degradation of emerging contaminants in water.
Unraveling Dissolved Organic Matter in Drinking Water Through Integrated Ozonation/ceramic Membrane and Biological Activated Carbon Process Using FT-ICR MS.

Abstract:The performance of an integrated process comprising coagulation, ozonation, and catalytic ceramic membrane filtration (CMF) followed by treatment with biological active carbon (BAC) was evaluated in a pilot-scale (96 m(3)/d) experiment to understand the biostability and quality of the finished water. The fate of dissolved organic matter (DOM) at the molecular level was explored using Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). Biostable finished water with an assimilable organic carbon (AOC) concentration of 30.2-45.4 mu g/L was obtained by the integrated process, and the high hydraulic retention time (HRT) (>= 45 min) of the BAC filter was necessary to provide biostable finished water. The coagulation/O-3/CMF unit efficiently transformed nitrogen-containing polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) with aromaticity and large molecular weight (Mw) (500-1000 Da) into CHO-type highly unsaturated phenolic compounds (HuPh) with less aromaticity and medium Mw (300-500 Da), which were effectively removed by subsequent BAC filtering. The main reaction was oxygen addition, followed by deamination and dealkylation of the coagulation/O-3/CMF unit and decarboxylation of the BAC filter. Principal component analysis revealed that N-containing and large-Mw PAH are potential AOC precursors, and the chemical characteristics of CHO-type and medium-Mw HuPh make them AOC candidates (correlation coefficients > 0.96). This study provides insights into the management of drinking water biostability and its suitability for the practical application of the integrated coagulation/O-3/CMF-BAC process in drinking water treatment plants.

Abstract:The SO2/NOX pollution in the flue gas of non-ferrous smelting is increasingly serious. At the same time, the accumulation of red mud (RM) in the aluminum industry and phosphorus sludge (PS) in the yellow phosphorus industry has caused serious harm to the environment. To remove SO2 and NOX from the non-ferrous smelting flue gas and realize the resource utilization of the above two solid wastes, an ultrasonic field was used in this study to strengthen the PS excited O3 process and RM wet desulfurization and denitrification process. In the process of O3 excitation, the response surface method (RSM) is used to obtain the optimal O3 excitation concentration, and the optimal reaction conditions are designed based on the response surface optimization model: T is 53.226 °C, power density is 0.4 W/cm2, PS concentration is 51.433 g/L, O3 formation concentration up to 250 ppm or more, which provides a theoretical basis for subsequent desulfurization and denitrification steps. It is proved that this study can replace the expensive traditional O3 generator and provide a basis for NOX removal in the following process. In addition, the optimum experimental conditions of ultrasonic enhanced RM desulfurization and denitrification process were also explored. Under ultrasonic frequency of 28 kHz, ultrasonic power density of 0.4 W/cm2, T of 50 °C, RM concentration of 15 g/L, and stirring intensity of 1000 rpm, the desulfurization efficiency of the reaction system can be maintained above 95 % within 250 min, and the denitrification efficiency can be maintained above 90 % within 250 min. The effect of desulfurization and denitrification in this study is much better than that of traditional methods. Finally, the reaction mechanism of ultrasonic enhanced O3 excitation and RM wet desulfurization and nitrogen removal was discussed by combining adsorption thermodynamics, isotherm, and kinetics. The results showed that the OH· free radicals generated by ultrasonic cavitation and the physical effects brought by emulsification had significant promoting effects.

Abstract:The integrated process comprising of in situ ozonation, ceramic membrane filtration and biologically active carbon filtration has a bright application prospect in wastewater reclamation to confront the global water crisis. Additionally, ceramic membranes of stronger catalytic activity are highly desirable so as to further increase the process cost-efficiency. In this study, a Mn-loaded catalytic membrane was tested by conducting pilot-scale experiments of the integrated process to measure its performance in enhancing pollutant removal and in alleviating membrane fouling. Lab-scale experiments were also conducted in order to investigate the underlying mechanisms in which the conventional Al2O3 membrane was used for comparison. Results showed that the integrated process with an incorporated catalytic membrane performed very well in that at a water flux as high as 80 L/m2/h and an ozone dosage of 5 mg/L, the treated water satisfied the guideline values for indirect potable reuse and membrane fouling was minimal. Reducing the ozone dosage to 4 mg/L can still achieve significant membrane fouling control effects, and maintain good effluent quality. Catalytic ozonation could lead to the generation of hydroxyl radicals, and the catalytic ozonation effect was much stronger when the catalytic membrane was used. Catalytic ozonation took place in both the membrane tank and membrane pores, with comparable contributions to the pollutant removal and membrane fouling control. Redundancy analysis (RDA) of membrane fouling characteristics showed that residual ozone concentration in membrane tank was an essential parameter and catalytic ozonation could be more effective in abating irreversible fouling than reversible fouling. RDA also confirmed that a lower ozone dosage would be sufficient for membrane fouling control when the catalytic membrane was used. This study evidently suggested the advantage of using catalytic ceramic membrane in the integrated process for efficient while economic treatment and reclamation of wastewater.

Abstract:Reverse osmosis is widely used for wastewater reuse, but efficient treatment of reverse osmosis concentrate (ROC) has become a huge challenge. In this study, catalytic ceramic membranes with active cobalt oxides loaded onto Al 2 O 3 flat ceramic membranes are synthesized and combined with ozone micro-nano bubble (MNB) to treat a ROC from Iron & Steel industry. Compared with conventional aeration method, ozone MNBs show a much smaller bubble size (mainly concentrated at 80–200 nm) and doubled the dissolved ozone concentration. With the urea assisted impregnation method, Co 3 O 4 particles were loaded on the outer surface and inner pore of ceramic membranes (Co-CM U ), which showed the highest efficiency in COD removal for the ROC. The quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis confirmed that the main active species involved in this coupled process were 1 O 2 and ·OH. The ozone MNBs/Co-CM U not only enhanced the destruction of organic pollutants but also reduced the membrane fouling, resulted from a combined action of various physical and chemical processes. The Co-CM U catalysts showed high catalytic stability in five cycles of reuse with negligible cobalt leaching. Especially, the operation cost in this coupled process for per unit COD removal is decreased by 2.5 times, comparing with conventional ozonation process.

Abstract:The effectiveness of ozonation was investigated in the aspect of in situ control of the membrane fouling in drinking water treatment. A compacted system with a scale of 120m3/d was built by integrating coagulation, ozonation and ceramic membrane into one tank. A flat-sheet ceramic membrane with a pore size of 60nm was selected. The quantity of foulants was measured in terms of total organic carbon and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The properties of organic fouling were characterized with hydrophobicity and specific ultraviolet absorbance. The results showed that membrane fouling was alleviated through in situ ozonation with ozone dosages of 2.0~2.5mg/L; the membrane working cycle time could be doubled under the tested conditions. However, the membrane fouling accumulated gradually with DOC as the major foulants. The in situ ozonation may have transformed organic molecules into smaller ones and derived more carboxylic groups, thus made them to be more hydrophilic during the oxidation process. It was concluded that ozonation had happened inside the membrane pores, leading to the change of the molecular structures of the organics. It is believed that in situ ozonation is of substantial significance in the improvement of ultrafiltration for drinking water treatment.

Abstract:The combination of membrane filtration and heterogeneous catalytic ozonation (hybrid ozonation membrane filtration (HOMF) process) was receiving increasing attention for water treatment due to its ability to eliminate contaminants and prevent membrane fouling and catalyst loss. Research in HOMF was just at its infant stage and has not yet been summarized. Due to the limited catalytic capacity of pure ceramic membranes, increasing efforts have been devoted to incorporating active catalysts into the ceramic membranes, thereby fabricating dual-functional membranes with both catalytic and anti-fouling properties. Significant improvements in reaction kinetics occurred in HOMF compared to catalytic ozonation, possibly due to nanoconfinement. However, limited evidence existed and debate continued regarding this nanoconfinement. HOMF also showed good performance in mitigating membrane fouling, with the mechanism yet to be studied and summarized. Accordingly, in this paper, the recent development of HOMF was systematically reviewed. The functionalized catalytic ceramic membranes and their active components, critical performance indicators and key challenges were provided. The membrane fouling control and pollutant removal mechanisms in HOMF systems were particularly summarized for the first time, with a key focus on nanoconfinement. Finally, the HOMF process for water treatment was discussed, including engineering applications, conclusions, and perspectives.

Abstract:Ozone has been applied for the advanced treatment of textile wastewater containing a large number of indigestible dyes and other macromolecular organics. However, due to the poor mass transfer performance of ozone, the efficiency of ozonation was limited, resulted in high operating cost. In the present work, the degradation of dyes and real textile wastewater by hydrodynamic cavitation combined with ozone (HC + O3) was studied in a small-scale pilot plant operating at a capacity of 40 L. The treatment of single HC and HC + Air had minute dye removal within 180 min whereas the treatment of HC + O3 and single O3 could degrade the dyes effectively in 10 min. The removal efficiency of dyes followed the order HC + O3 > single O3 > HC + Air > single HC. The synergetic coefficient of HC + O3 was 1.33, which indicated that HC and O3 had noteworthy synergistic effect in the hybrid system. For the real textile wastewater, the removal rates of HC + O3 on COD, TOC, UV254 and color were 36%, 23%, 71% and 90% in 30 min, which was higher than the single treatment. The removal of UV254 and color showed that macromolecular organics and residual dyes were effectively degraded. Among these treatments, HC + O3 was the most energy-efficient. Therefore, HC + O3 could be used as a potential dye degradation technology and would have a promising engineering application value in the real textile wastewater advanced treatment.

Abstract:An integrated process including coagulation, ozonation, ceramic membrane ultra-filtration and activated carbon filtration was investigated for the treatment of drinking water from the micro-polluted surface water in the southern China. A pilot-scale plant with the capacity of 120m3/d was set up and operated. Submerged flat-sheet ceramic membranes were selected with the average pore diameter of 60nm and the filtration area of 50m2. Quite a number of water quality parameters were evaluated including turbidity, particle counts, coliform bacteria, Cryptosporidium and Giardia cysts, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), ammonia, geosmin, 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB), 4 trihalomethanes, 6 haloacetic acids, 8 endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) and 14 pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs). The experimental results showed that the removal efficiencies of all the evaluated parameters ranged from 64% to 100%. The ozonation in membrane tank is very helpful both in enhancing the performance of removing multiple contaminants and in controlling the membrane fouling with ozone dosage of 2–5mg/L at the permeate flux of 100L/m2·h. The innovation of the integrated process was discussed based on the concept of nano-reactor to probe into the reaction activities inside the membrane pores. However, the detailed mechanisms need to be explored in the future.
Migration of membrane fouling with minimal damage to cell integrity by catalytic ceramic membrane systems in low dosages of ozone during algae-laden water treatment

Abstract:Ultrafiltration coupled with ozonation pretreatment has received more attention in treating algae-laden water, while balance between cell integrity and mitigating membrane fouling remains a significant challenge in implementation. Herein, the objective of this study is to develop a novel ceramic ultrafiltration membrane (TiO 2 -Mn-Gd-Ce-M) coupled catalytic ozonation pretreatment system for effectively mitigating membrane fouling with minimal damage to cell integrity. Results showed that this coupling system exhibited an impressive algal rejection of 78.70 % and DOC removal of 59.43 % at a low ozone concentration of 0.01 mmol/L. More importantly, membrane fouling could be effectively mitigated through mainly reducing irreversible fouling resistance. Many lines of evidences suggested the main reason responsible for mitigating membrane fouling included: 1) the abundant hydroxyl groups within membrane due to the introduction of TiO 2 and Mn 3 Gd 5.5 Ce 1.5 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 1.5 could facilitate the formation of hydrogen bonds with water molecules, which enhanced hydrophilicity and subsequent anti-fouling capability; 2) low concentration ozone exhibited a preference for electrophilic attack during direct oxidation, thereby reducing cellular damage and increasing the electrostatic repulsion between foulants and membrane surfaces. 3) ozone gradient activation from TiO 2 on the surface to Mn 3 Gd 5.5 Ce 1.5 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 1.5 in the pores contributed to generating abundant ROSs which effectively mineralized attached organic foulants in membrane and greatly decreased irreversible fouling. In summary, this study not only proposes a viable strategy for the treatment of algae-contaminated water but also offers valuable insights into the migration mechanism of membrane fouling in catalytic ozonation membrane systems. Hence, the TiO 2 -Mn-Gd-Ce-M catalytic ozonation process demonstrated promising potential for the treatment of algae-contaminated water, effectively mitigating drinking water health risks.

Abstract:Micro-bubble aeration is an efficient way to promote ozonation performance, but the technology is challenged by extensive energy cost. Here, a ceramic ultrafiltration membrane was used to achieve ozone micro-bubble (0–80 μm) aeration in a simple way at gaseous pressures of 0.14–0.19 MPa. Compared with milli-bubble aeration, micro-bubble aeration increased the equilibrium aquatic O 3 concentrations by 1.53–3.25 times and apparent O 3 transfer rates by 3.12–3.35 times at pH 5.0–8.0. Consequently, the • OH yield was 2.67–3.54 times via faster O 3 transfer to the aquatic solution followed by decomposition rather than interfacial reaction. Ozone micro-bubble aeration outperformed milli-bubble aeration, with the degradation kinetics of 2,4-D being 3.08–4.36 times higher. Both O 3 -oxidation and • OH oxidation were important to the promotion with the contributions being 35.8%-45.9% and 54.1%-64.2%, respectively. The operational and water matric conditions influenced the oxidation performance via both O 3 oxidation and • OH oxidation, which is reported for the first time. In general, the ceramic membrane offered a low-energy approach of ozone micro-bubble aeration for efficient pollutant degradation. The O 3 oxidation and • OH oxidation were proportionally promoted by ozone micro-bubble due to O 3 transfer enhancement. Thus, the promotive mechanism can be interpreted as the synchronous enchantment on ozone exposure and • OH exposure for the first time.

Investigation into a New Integrated Water Purification Process of Half Coagulation/Ozonation/Ceramic Membrane Filtration

Abstract:In order to control the membrane fouling caused by the half coagulation/ozonation/ceramic membrane filtration of micro-polluted water and investigate the removal capability of this process for pollutants, a bench-scale test was carried out, and the effects of coagulant dosage and ozone dosage on trans-membrane pressure and effluent quality were explored. The results show that (1) membrane fouling can be alleviated significantly by half coagulation and ozonation, for instance, the trans-membrane pressure decreases rapidly from the original -0.074 MPa to -0.021 MPa at a PAC (Polyaluminum Chloride) dosage of 12.5 mg/L and decreases from -0.068 MPa to -0.049 MPa as the O3 dosage increases from 0 mg/L to 2 mg/L; (2) the organic matter in water can be removed efficiently by the integrated process; for instance, the molecular mass distribution range of the organic matter changes from less than 5 ku to less than 3 ku, which means a transformation of part of organic matter from large molecular mass to a smaller one; (3) the integrated process helps achieve 60.00% and 68.00% of CODMn and UV254 removals as well as 57.59% and 48.39% of THMFP and HAAFP removals, respectively; (4) after the integrated process, the effluent turbidity decreases to less than 0.05 NTU, the number of particles larger than 2 μm decreases to less than or equal to 10 CNT/mL, and the bacteria and coliform groups in water are entirely removed. Thus, the microbial safety of the effluent is successfully guaranteed.

Abstract:In this study, the fouling propensity of a hybrid ceramic membrane bioreactor (CMBR)-reverse osmosis (RO) process was investigated over a prolonged period using real textile wastewater effluent. Additionally, the effectiveness of in-situ ozonation for fouling mitigation was investigated. The results revealed that the CMBR-RO system achieved approximately 99.8 % removal of chemical oxygen demand and 97.4 % removal of total nitrogen. Despite this, soluble extracellular polymeric substances, particularly biopolymers and humics-like substances, remained in the system, resulting in irreversible fouling on the ultrafiltration (UF) membrane. The implementation of in-situ ozonation notably reduced ceramic membrane fouling by enhancing the filterability of larger macromolecules and eliminating inorganic/organic foulants from the membrane surface. Multiple modified fouling indexes were also utilized to evaluate the fouling potential of the RO feed water through size fractionation. It is worth noting that ozonation could pose a potential risk for subsequent RO membrane fouling due to the formation of low molecular weight neutrals, acids, and calcium- or silica- related inorganic-organic complexes. Overall, the integrated CMBR-RO system with in-situ ozonation exhibited excellent performance in producing clean water, achieving nearly 100 % removal of 20 Aromatic Amines. These findings underscore the viability of the CMBR-RO system as a practical and sustainable choice for the reclamation of textile wastewater.
Ozone Micro-Bubble Aeration Using the Ceramic Ultrafiltration Membrane with Superior Oxidation Performance for 2, 4-D Elimination

Abstract:Micro-bubble aeration is an efficient way to promote ozonation performance, but the technology is challenged by extensive energy cost. Here, a ceramic ultrafiltration membrane was used to achieve ozone micro-bubble (0-80 mu m) aeration in a simple way at gaseous pressures of 0.14-0.19 MPa. Compared with milli-bubble aeration, micro-bubble aeration increased the equilibrium aquatic O3 concentrations by 1.53-3.25 times and apparent O3 transfer rates by 3.12-3.35 times at pH 5.0-8.0. Consequently, the 'OH yield was 2.67-3.54 times via faster O3 transfer to the aquatic solution followed by decomposition rather than interfacial reaction. Ozone micro-bubble aeration outperformed milli-bubble aeration, with the degradation kinetics of 2,4-D being 3.08-4.36 times higher. Both O3-oxidation and 'OH oxidation were important to the promotion with the contributions being 35.8%-45.9% and 54.1%-64.2%, respectively. The operational and water matric conditions influenced the oxidation performance via both O3 oxidation and 'OH oxidation, which is reported for the first time. In general, the ceramic membrane offered a low-energy approach of ozone micro-bubble aeration for efficient pollutant degradation. The O3 oxidation and 'OH oxidation were proportionally promoted by ozone micro-bubble due to O3 transfer enhancement. Thus, the promotive mechanism can be interpreted as the synchronous enchantment on ozone exposure and 'OH exposure for the first time.

Abstract:Membrane separation technology using ceramic membrane as carrier has attracted wide attention in drinking water treatment. However, the inevitable problem of irreversible contamination requires high intensity chemical cleaning in place (CIP) to ensure efficient ultrafiltration performance. Therefore, this study discussed the causes of membrane pollution, and further evaluated the purification effects of sodium hypochlorite, different aeration methods and different dosage of ozone as cleaning agents on membrane pollution. Comparison of the physicochemical properties and surface morphology of ceramic membranes before and after cleaning showed that ozone micro-nano-bubbles (O3-MNBs) had excellent cleaning efficiency at the same dosage. MNBs could provide shear forces, while their high mass transfer efficiency increased the dissolved ozone concentration rapidly. The degradation of fouling on the membrane surface was achieved by direct ozone oxidation and indirect oxidation by the generation of center dot OH, resulting in a 100% flux recovery rate in a short time. Our results suggest that O3- MNBs, as a promising CIP method for ceramic membranes, not only significantly improves cleaning efficiency, but also reduces the negative environmental impact of chemical agents.
Bi-metal oxide-modified flat-sheet ceramic membranes for catalytic ozonation of organic pollutants in wastewater treatment

Abstract:Ceramic membranes have a highly porous structure and a high surface area, which provide suitable support for heterogeneous catalytic oxidation. In this study, as effective catalysts for ozonation, Mg, Ce, and Mn oxides were coated by co-precipitation onto a flat-sheet ceramic membrane to produce two catalytic ceramic membranes (CCMs), namely an Mg-Ce membrane and an Mg-Mn membrane. This technique combines ceramic membrane filtration with catalytic ozonation for advanced water and wastewater treatment. The CCM characterization showed that the metal oxide catalysts were well coated on the membrane surface and inside the membrane pores. Compared with non-catalytic ozonation, catalytic ozonation with CCMs was more effective for the degradation and removal of organic pollutants, including a dye as a model pollutant in water and residual organics in secondary wastewater effluent. At the same ozone dosage for ozonation coupled with membrane filtration, the organic removal efficiency was increased from approximately 30% for the ceramic membrane without the catalyst coating to over 80% for the CCM with the catalyst coating. Membrane catalytic ozonation also resulted in effective membrane fouling control during ultrafiltration of the secondary effluent. Based on the hydroxyl (OH) quenching test, ozonation with CCMs produced more OH free radicals than ozonation alone, which led to enhanced organic degradation. Moreover, catalytic ozonation in the membrane reactor played an effective role in mitigation of membrane fouling. Ceramic membrane-based catalytic ozonation can be used for effective removal of toxic and persistent organic pollutants from water and wastewater.

Abstract:A novel CuO modified ceramic hollow fiber membrane for in-situ peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation was developed and employed in surface water treatment. The performance of membrane fouling control and organic pollutants removal was systematically investigated. The results indicated that compared with pristine membrane, CuO modified ceramic hollow fiber membrane significantly improved the removal of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and UV absorbance at 254 nm (UV254) in surface water. The removal rate increased with the increase of CuO loading content because of the reduction of the membrane surface pore size, but declined with the increase of PMS dosage due to the degradation products of incomplete mineralization passing through the membrane. The fluorescent compounds in surface water were efficiently removed by the CuO modified ceramic hollow fiber membrane and enhanced with the increase of PMS dosage and CuO loading content. The CuO modified ceramic hollow fiber membrane with in-situ PMS activation exhibits excellent antifouling property to natural organic matter (NOM) in surface water. Both the reversible and irreversible fouling decreased with the increase of PMS dosage while the membrane fouling would be slightly intensified with increased loading of CuO on the membrane, suggesting the trade-off relation between PMS dosage and CuO loading content. In addition, the degradation efficiency of organic pollutants in surface water was dramatically enhanced by the CuO modified ceramic hollow fiber membrane via incorporation of in-situ PMS oxidation process. High removal performance after five cycles of experiments showed the superior stability and reusability of the CuO modified ceramic hollow fiber membrane.

Abstract:To guide the practical application of ozonation coupled with tubular ceramic membranes (TCMs), the performance and the mechanism of mitigated membrane fouling by pre-ozonation-filtration (Pre-O/F) and in-situ ozonation-filtration (in-situ-O/F) were investigated. The in-situ-O/F mode exhibited a rejection performance 1.19 times better than that of Pre-O/F for effluent organic matter (EfOM) removal, but less membrane fouling mitigation. The backwashing efficiency of the in-situ-O/F mode was better than that of Pre-O/F, because backwashing loosened the in-situ-O/F membrane fouling layer and made it easier to remove by backwashing. SEM-EDX measurements were used to identify the components of the inorganic, organic, and biofouling membrane fouling layers. In Pre-O/F mode, EfOM, extracellular polymeric substances, and microorganisms in the effluent were destroyed by ozonation before filtration. In in-situ-O/F mode, the adhesion between irreversible membrane fouling and the pores/surfaces of TCMs was destroyed by ozonation, thus converting the irreversible membrane fouling to reversible membrane fouling. This led us to propose the process strategy of filtration coupled with ozonation for reclaimed water treatment. Pre-O/F is suitable for use in the treatment of large amounts of wastewater in short times because of the high-water flux. The in-situ-O/F mode is more suitable for normal use because of its lower operating cost and higher efficiency.

Abstract:In order to efficiently remove NOMs in natural surface water and alleviate membrane pollution at the same time, a flat microfiltration ceramic membrane (CM) was modified with MnFeOX (Mn-Fe-CM), and a coagulation–precipitation–sand filtration pretreatment coupled with an in situ ozonation-ceramic membrane filtration system (Pretreatment/O3/Mn-Fe-CM) was constructed for this study. The results show that the removal rates of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), specific ultraviolet absorption (SUVA) and NH4+-N by the Pretreatment/O3/Mn-Fe-CM system were 51.1%, 67.9% and 65.71%, respectively. Macromolecular organic compounds such as aromatic proteins and soluble microbial products (SMPs) were also effectively removed. The working time of the membrane was about twice that in the Pretreatment/CM system without the in situ ozone oxidation, which was measured by the change in transmembrane pressure, proving that membrane fouling was significantly reduced. Finally, based on the SEM, AFM and other characterization results, it was concluded that the main mitigation mechanisms of membrane fouling in the Pretreatment/O3/Mn-Fe-CM system was as follows: (1) pretreatment could remove part of DOC and SUVA to reduce their subsequent entrapment on a membrane surface; (2) a certain amount of shear force generated by O3 aeration can reduce the adhesion of pollutants; (3) the loaded MnFeOX with a higher catalytic ability produced a smoother active layer on the surface of the ceramic membrane, which was conducive in reducing the contact among Mn-Fe-CM, O3 and pollutants, thus increasing the proportion of reversible pollution and further reducing the adhesion of pollutants; (4) Mn-Fe-CM catalyzed O3 to produce ·OH to degrade the pollutants adsorbed on the membrane surface into smaller molecular organic matter, which enabled them pass through the membrane pores, reducing their accumulation on the membrane surface.
